Über das Spiel

This unique action adventure game lets you become Haimrik, a young scribe trying to make a living in a medieval town full of warriors, sorcerers, dragons and dragon-riding sorcerer-warriors. But one book changes his whole life. With the help of Masamba, a hungry lioness who will protect him while constantly trying to eat him, he’ll venture out to take on the evil king and his elite generals, the Word Warriors.

Fortunately, Haimrik commands the Power of the Words! These are the stones in the path Haimrik walks, and he brings them to life as he steps on each one, willingly or not. Haimrik will need to activate the right words to defeat the various enemies that challenge him across numerous Word Worlds, with new puzzles appearing constantly throughout the game.

In an added touch, Haimrik will undoubtedly die many horrific deaths, leaving pools of red blood contrasting with the otherwise plain monochromatic sepia world. Be part of a medieval revolution against the Word King and his elite warriors, and change the way you see words and stories forever.

Features:
  • Unique action adventure built upon interactive words.
  • Medieval comedy full of dark humor and over-the-top cartoon violence.
  • Rare sepia view of a medieval fantasy world.
  • Eccentric characters like the lioness Masamba who will protect Haimrik from harm... when she’s not trying to eat him.

It was surprisingly fun, and the gore actually reminded me a little of a dark comedy splatter show called Happy Tree Friends :p The controls are not the best, but it is fully playable :> The puzzles are quite easy and the game as a whole is pretty easy to master if you are an achievement hunter :D

The style and animation are very good and unique, the story is good too but the gameplay is meh and repetitive and sometimes frustrating (you need to be pixel perfect on certain words because they're too small then you get killed because later on the game becomes a simple pattern learning and reaction time game instead of puzzles or storytelling).

I wouldn't really recommend this as a game but it is pretty interesting and unique.

I played this game since it looked interesting.

Once I got to the planting seeds part, there is a game breaking bug. I planted the poisonous fungus and killed off the locusts. However, after replanting the seeds with fertilizer and advancing to the next area, Haimrik is empty handed and I cannot finish the level. I tried this part again and had to restart from the beginning because there is no auto save feature before this glitch happens. I was extremely frustrated because I watched a walkthrough the second time and I still could not figure it out.

I do not know why the developers did not catch and fix this glitch.

Other cons: There is no help page to reference the keyboard controls and there is only 1 music track playing in the game.

Grade: B- (60/100)

I do genuinely adore the concept of this game, especially as someone who enjoys word games. However, it just wasn't fun at any point. The game feels a bit too tedious to play through and its story is damaged by constant interruptions (puzzle sequences). The graphics and music too can get bland or annoying eventually, and it really doesn't help that there are no control options in a game that is typically going to be played in shorter sessions.

So sadly, I don't feel like I should recommend this game, BUT i would like to see a sequel that expands on this concept in a more presentable and enjoyable manner, especially considering that this game really nailed the character design.

Man, this game is such a huge chore to play. The sound, music, artstyle and even the story all get old really quick. Not to mention how unnecessarily gory this game can get.

However, its the gameplay which I find to be this game's worst aspect. It's so repetitive, slow and monotonous to play. To make matters worse, most parts feel designed to be dragged out for way too long as well. Levels consist of nothing but slowly walking back and forth, grabbing stuff out of the ground, within very similar-looking enviroments. Mechanics are of no help either, since they're so incredibly clunky and boring.

Overall, I can appreciate what Haimrik presumably set out to do, but its execution is so bad that it results in every last bit of the game feeling like a waste of time.

I find this game particularly good for language exercise. Its special use of words works well in different languages (between me and my friend, we tried English, German and Spanish). Otherwise a simple and somewhat easy game that's lite and interesting.

Once upon a time... The art of storytelling

Haimrik is a side scrolling puzzle game (with some light platforming and action elements) that requires you to think on your feet. You will use words to overcome obstacles forging tools and other useful items with your unique powers.

Beginning in a squalid town, this mundane little corner of the world is an appropriate reflection of the game’s titular hero. Haimrik is a spectacularly unremarkable scribe who spends his days trying to scratch out a living in the basement of the local bar. A fortuitous series of events gift Haimrik a magical book with a difference. Unlike traditional spell books, this particular tome does not simply bestow magic upon its owner. Instead, it demands blood and transports players into a world where the pen really is mightier than the sword.

Cannonballs, swords, rain, wind, fire, and sailing boats all appear at the touch of a button during the gameplay and provide an excellent opportunity to engage in some simple puzzle solving exercises. Occasional boss battles are where Haimrik has the opportunity to face dragons and other fierce animals like gryphons or a lioness. Combat gameplay is hardly sensational, you can utilize whatever weapon it appears on words and simply need to avoid being hit by a pretty predictable AI. The result is a combat system that is easy to pick up and focus your attention on solving the level puzzles.

Levels are desing in a wise manner, they are varied enough that you should never get bored by them. Forging-items-from-words levels are interspersed with platformer levels, chases, and battles. New complexities are introduced all the while, but you may not enjoy all of them. The graphics are very unique, gore sometimes with adorable animations and enough differences to not feel reused.

The story is pretty neat, characters are charming and some are funny.
You definitely want this to be on your Steam library, trust me! It worths to play :)

Thanks Thiago Duarte for this awesome gift! <3

A top game. Purchased it on a sale. I'd bump off one star for the inability to change the language setting. The game automatically detects the global language setting (mine was in English), however I wanted to play in my first language (not English).

The game has the novel gameplay elements which was refreshing. I liked the intense emotions and what some people may call cruelty. The boss fights were difficult, but I used my old trick -- I made an overnight break, and the next day I was able to beat the boss. The story was engaging and with the twists.

Haimrik is a adventure puzzle game where you use words to reveal objects that help you complete the puzzles.

The story is pretty neat, characters are charming and some are funny.
You can complete the game in less than 5 Hours depending on if you get stuck on any puzzles.

This is a short little indie game with an interesting concept, it took me around 5 hours to complete.
The art style is great and which really shows in the gore,
I think the game could have been a little shorter though as it's gameplay did get boring after a few hours.
Certainly worth a single playthrough,
A price around £3/£4 sounds more worth for the amount of gameplay.

Haimrik: A Literacy-Based Adventure

Haimrik has a lot to offer and some real uniqueness at its base level. However, this is marred by the inferiority of the other elements which seem like a poor attempt to justify the slightly too high price tag. The word-based gameplay is refreshing and entertaining, the styling is original but the narrative is cliché and the RPG sections become chore-like very quickly.

Overall, I’d recommend it for fans of action-adventure games looking for something different in terms of mechanics but would still suggest waiting until it’s on sale due to both the quantity and mixed quality of the gameplay.

Game that surprised me with lovely art and visual choice along with satisfying story. Main character is just random nobody young fella like in fairytales, but in the end gets cape or more likely book of a hero to start rampage against enemy hordes. Haimrik mixes puzzles, platforming, sidescrolling combat and storytelling with bit unique feature where you use words to defeat obstacles in Haimrik's way.

This was one of those nice little game finds that gave neat experience and were their own product. Can certainly recommend as dialogue was quite entertaining too along with the characters in the game. As for the bad sides for the game, could say bit sluggish movement/use of items at parts and maybe music didn't strike me so much or just won't remember it, but otherwise it was nice package as whole.

What an interesting idea for a game plagued by one of the worst executions I've seen. For some reason most of the visual effects are invisible and basically act as goofy traps that serve as nothing but roadblocks to a fun and enjoyable story. The controls are frustrating to a degree I haven't felt since 8-bit days, relying on invisible mechanics. I think I bought it for a couple dollars so I'm not too bummed but I certainly can't recommend it.

Starts strong, but never develops anything past the first few levels and straight up degenerates into a poor action game in the last few. Which I wouldn't mind if the game had something else going for it, but the story is basic and the artstyle is pointlessly detailed with gore, yet primitive in regards to everything else.

Haimrik:
~~~~~~
The country of Estria consists of four kingdoms, which were constantly at war with each other. Mind you, that was fairly much the norm in the Middle Ages. “What sort of event could reunite these four provinces,” wondered the King Udolf? Unexpectedly, Estria was attacked by a larger army, which forced the four regions of Estria to fight shoulder to shoulder to repel the invader. However, that was not enough! On the brink of defeat, King Udolf, led by one of his faithful servants, discovered a powerful new source of magic at the summit of a mountain - the magic of words! With this, they were able to create magical books that gave exceptional powers in battle. They gave one book to each of the strongest warriors from the four provinces of Estria. These soldiers became known as “The Word Warriors.” After the war, some of the kingdoms flourished, while others descended into poverty. In one of these poor kingdoms lives a young scribe named Haimrik, and this is his unbelievable story.
Haimrik is an action / adventure / puzzle game developed by Below the Game and published by 1C Company. In this game, you’ll be playing a young scribe who stumbles upon one of the magical books of words.
What an absolute gem this game is! It is structured extremely well, the story line is superb, and each of the characters is finely detailed, from their personality traits to the fantastic cartoon illustrations. I really like the fact that the storyline flows well, while still managing to keep the suspense around the identity of the bad guys as it progresses. Another factor that enriches the experience of playing Haimrik is the dialogue; it leans towards black humour without being too obvious, which is spot on.
The gameplay has three aspects. The first one is the adventure. From the start, Haimrik will have to go to places, talk to people and figure out ways to get information or items from other characters within the location. The puzzles kicked in when Haimrik dives into the magical book of words by cutting his hand with his quill. Oh yes, I forgot to mention that he needs his own blood to access the book of words. The second aspect is the puzzles, most of which are set in three stages. Basically, Haimrik will appear on the top of your screen in between two towers. Between these towers, there are up to five floors, with words written on the front. These words continue the adventure and are simultaneously the puzzles that you have to solve. Haimrik will be able to stand over words and activate an object to help him to complete the puzzle. For example, he might need to destroy a tower, and the only way to do it is by using a cannon. So, he will need to stand on the word cannon and activate it. The challenge is that you not only need to activate words in sequences, but you also need to take the activated item to merge with another one, in addition to fighting archers and swordsmen (the third aspect being the action factor), and overcoming various obstacles to move to the next phase. Just brilliant!
The boss’s fights are pretty much the same with more action; it will take some time to beat them, and it will indeed involve dragons more than once for good measure!
Splendid cartoons visuals. Good story-line with dialogue full of dark humour. The soundtrack is pretty good, and the controls are very responsive. The only negative I can see is the lack of options, apart from that, this game is a gem!
Positives:
~~~~~~~

+ Great cartoon graphics
+ Great story-line, dialogues and characters
+ Superb combination of action/puzzle/adventure games
+ Good Soundtrack
+ Achievements
+ Where can I get one of these books?

Negatives:
~~~~~~~~
- Lack of options (resolution, music etc.)
- No trading cards
Well, it was a great pleasure to meet you, Haimrik. It is one of the best games I have played this year!
9/10
When I go through my Steam Discovery Queue to find new games, the first thing that is going to catch my attention and make me really look at a game is a distinctive art style. Haimrik certainly has an aesthetic that makes it stand out immediately. It’s scratchily hand-drawn style is distinctive and wonderful to see in motion.
You play as the titular Haimrik, a young man who has been granted the power to go into his book and interact with the words themselves. There is an overworld of sorts where you will interact with NPC’s but the actual gameplay takes place inside the book. Stages are presented in tiers with words along the floor. Certain action words (sword, torch, crossbow, etc.) can be interacted with and Haimrik will pull a manifestation of them that can then be used to solve that levels puzzle. I found this mechanic to be super cool and fresh. It’s an idea that I’ve never really seen before and is generally, executed pretty well.
Circling back to the art direction, as you use different words to fight enemies, you’ll see the hilariously gruesome deaths. I was taken a back at first as a bandit’s face was melted off by acid, but I really enjoyed the game’s dark sense of humor. With this, I also found the writing to be genuinely funny and found myself chuckling to a lot of the lines.
As many things that Haimrik does right, there are some areas where I thought it stumbled a bit. Combat is pretty basic and there’s not much to it. While combat is not really the point of the game, it’s still worth noting that is a bit hollow. Also, as good as the art is, I found the music to be pretty disappointing. The same handful of tracks seem to loop during levels and I found that they got old pretty quickly. My last gripe is that I wish the movement speed was just a bit faster. While there is a dash button, some levels require you to go up and down three or four levels which can feel a bit tedious at times due to the movement speed.
Overall, I thought Haimrik was a really cool experience and brings some neat ideas to the table. I keep coming back to the art style but it really is tremendous. Couple that with the funny writing and unique mechanics, and I would certainly recommend people give this one a shot.
I have been following the progress of this game since playing a demo a few years ago at PAX East. What a fantastic game this has turned out to be, so much attention to detail. There is no other game like it, the story is fantastic, the art style is unique. I highly recommend this game.
