Classic Hammerwatch - If you plan to play a full run I would recommend to you to do with other people, also bring a lot of time to do so since it is a long journey from start to the end :) ^^ .

Hammerwatch,
ein erstklassiges 2D Hack 'n' Slay Spiel das auch ohne einen komplexe Steuerung, Skill Tree oder Story auskommt.
Wer auf dieses Genre steht und den pixeligen Retro-Charme mag, der sollte dieses Spiel auf keinen Fall auslassen.

In der Hauptkampagne metzelt man sich munter durch 12 sehr schön gestaltete Dungeons, welche in vier Themen untergliedert sind. Alle drei Dungeons erwartet einen ein einzigartiger Bosskampf. Zudem gibt es in jedem Abschnitt neue Gegner, welche zahl- und abwechslungsreich platziert wurden. Um sich nicht einfach nur langweilig durch Horden zu kämpfen gibt es auch dazwischen immer wieder kleine Champions die es faustdick hinter den Ohren haben.
Wer das Spiel durchspielen möchte sollte neugierig jedes Geheimnis erkunden, es gibt viele Verstecke, kleine Rätsel und Bonuslevel, die nicht alle leicht zu finden sind. Viele davon sind optional, aber nicht alle, so muss man in jedem Level eine Planke finden, sonst wird man das Spiel am Ende nicht schaffen. Keines der Verstecke ist unmöglich zu finden, man muss nur die Augen offen halten :)
Weiterhin bietet das Spiel eine zweite Kampagne die ähnlich aufgebaut ist und genauso liebevoll gestaltet. Diese ist zwar nicht ganz so linear und damit etwas verworrener als die Hauptkampagne, welche dem Spielspaß aber nicht im geringsten abträglich ist. Zusätzlich kann man auch eigene Karten basteln oder welche aus dem Workshop benutzen, die Tools werden mitgeliefert.

Es stehen einem sechs spielbare Klassen zur Auswahl, Paladin, Wizard, Ranger, Warlock, Thief und der Priest. Jede Klasse hat drei Spezialangriffe welche sich völlig von einander unterscheiden. Abgesehen von HP und Mana hat auch jede Klase unterschiedliche passive Fähigkeiten die sich auf jedenfall lohnen und den Wiederspielwert deutlich erhöhen.

Die Steuerung ist einfach gehalten, man lenkt den Character in alle acht Richtungen und greift auch in diese an. Zudem gibt es vier Angriffstasten, der Standardangriff und die drei Spezialangriffe.
Hierzu kann man zwei Tipps geben:
* Nutzt keinen Autoangriff, der ist langsamer als wenn man die Tasten selbst anschlägt (der Begriff Hack im Genre ist durchaus wörtlich gemeint).
* Nutzt Strafe, die meisten welche an dem Spiel scheitern tun dies nicht. Die Strafe-Taste ermöglicht die Blickrichtung zu fixieren und sich dennoch frei bewegen zu können und ist essentiell für das Spiel. Blickrichtung halten und immer in Bewegung bleiben

Das Spiel kann man mit bis zu vier Spielern zocken, je mehr desto besser. Dies geht sowohl lokal (alle an einem Bildschirm) als auch im Netzwerk. Wichtig hierbei, die Gegner skalieren nicht mit der Anzahl der Spieler, also je weniger Spieler desto länger dauert das Spiel, schaffbar ist es aber auch auf 'Hard' und allein, braucht nur etwas Übung.

Was die Schwierigkeit des Spiels betrifft liegt es wohl stark am Geschmack wie man diese beschreibt, zum Glück kann man immer zwischen drei Schwierigkeitsstufen wählen. Mir persönlich gefällt 'Hard' am besten, sie ist durchaus herrausfordernd aber dennoch problemlos zu meistern. Wem das zu schwer ist kann ja eine der anderen Stufen probieren oder Crutches benutzen - wem es allerdings noch nicht schwer genug sein sollte für den gibt es noch einstellbare Challenges, so kann man z.B. versuchen das Spiel mit nur 1 HP durchzuspielen.

Das einzig Negative was mir an dem Spiel nicht gefällt sind die kleinen Bugs im Netzwerkmultiplayer, welche meist durch eine schlechte Verbindung des Hostes zustande kommen. Darüber kann man aber meistens hinweg sehen - ist nur bei öffentlichen Lobbys manchmal etwas schwierig.

Alles in allem eines der besten Spiele des Hack 'n' Slay Genres. Absolute Kaufempfehlung, hiermit kann man nichts falsch machen.

Wir haben es jetzt einige Stunden im lokalen 2 Spieler coop gezockt und es ist ein fantastisches Spiel mit fairen Geheimnissen und viel Motivation beim nächsten Einstieg weiter zu kommen.
Kleinere technische Probleme wie die Möglichkeit versehentlich für den anderen Spieler einzukaufen trüben den Gesamteindruck ein wenig, können aber getrost ignoriert werden.
Für analoge Padgamer empfehle ich in den Optionen den Haken für die Begrenzung der Schussrichtung zu entfernen. Speziell wenn man eine der Fernkampfklassen wählt hilfreich.
Würde es mir sofort wieder kaufen!

Fun to a certain point (multiplied by 4 in co-op). The campaign gets repetitive especially considering the timing of this very late review. The diversity of the campaign between this game and the sequel just cannot compare. I'm not recommending it because it's bad but rather because your money will be better spent on the sequel. It just has a lot more going for it for similar price points

The grind achievements for the campaign suck extra hard since the campaign becomes bland after the 3rd or 4th run of the game. Lots of missed opportunities to tie that system into the replay value that workshop maps add. Basically the campaign and the achievements tied to it are counter intuitive to the things that make extend the fun in this game and make it replayable.

Great game! This isn't a roguelike BTW its a hack n slash kinda like Gauntlet or Demon Strike But it comes with a level editor and the custom levels are awesome!

I recommend starting out with the wizard. Feel free to start on standard difficulty! Dont worry you'll learn faster.

Also there's multiplayer which is awesome! Playing with other people!

Very very fun roguelite for the price tag its at. If you're apprehensive about this game's follow up (Heroes of hammerwatch) play this first to see if you like the mechanics

The fun is quadrupled if you have friends to play with (and convince them to buy it during its 80% off sale, its literally 2$....)

I'm not gonna ruin the story but if you do play it, explore EVERYTHING, you'll thank me after you finish the last boss. This game is a bit silly at times, but it rewards patience and every single boss has a pattern that you can pseudo-play around

Co-op is infinitely more fun/easier though

Awesome action RPG with really great co-op. My friend and I had a good time with this one. It has a good variety of characters, plenty of things to upgrade, and a lengthy campaign mode.

There's some enjoyable puzzles and a bunch of different enemies to deal with. It's a bit difficult at times but worth the challenge. If you enjoy games like Gauntlet you might like this too! :-)

Hammerwatch is a very enjoyable dungeon crawler with careful thought put into every floor, with plenty of secrets to find along the way. There are 2 campaigns to be enjoyed with 7 different classes, all with their own strengths and weaknesses, although some are a bit more balanced than others. There are also a few extra game modes that can be played, such as a survival mode and a defense mode, as well as an editor to be played with to make your own maps, or enjoy someone else's. The coop is fun, although it can be very chaotic as the camera tries its best to keep everyone on the screen.

Although the game is great content wise, it can be a bit messy as far as settings and the like are concerned - for example, I could not play the game in fullscreen, as it did not have my resolution available (although I do not exclude me being too incompetent to find the available fix). Once you've got that figured out, however, the game is a joy to play all the way through both campaigns.

Imagine this:
It's a rainy day, you and your two other friends have ABSOLUTELY nothing to do and you stumble on this gem... You're feeling rich (and since your other friends are strategy geeks you have to sponsor them the game via the 4-Pack. Well it is not money wasted.
The game is on another level of simple rouge-likes. Being able to pick from a roster of class - my favourite being the healer for how annoying your beam of healing is - you are launched into a dungeon or if you prefer play one of the free content expansions. The game doesn't have much to it other than dodge, attack and special attack. With it's simplicity comes the bullet hell/plethora of enemies and the clown fiesta of fun.
Having played 6 hours of it I wish I played it more... But I joined my friends a week later right before they were about to kill one of the last bosses in the game. Having done that I've never really found the time to play the game properly but would still recommend it to anyone looking for that little hidden gem.

Lots of hack and slash action but also ranged if you enjoy that way, plenty various hordes of enemies that aren't too easy to kill but aren't super buff where you stand there stabbing and secrets that if you're just walking along wouldn't notice but if you keep an eye out aren't difficult too find.

A game that's fast-paced, fun and often frenetic. this dungeon crawler is a fantastic if unforgiving good time for the whole family. The controls and combat in general are simple enough that anyone can understand them at a glance, but also leave enough complexity and variety especially between characters that it can be difficult to master. The lack of a save or bookmark function is a drawback, as you must start over each time you play. Regardless, if you like the idea of stabbing and casting while mastering a dungeon that hides secrets, dangers and treasures, then this game is for you. Better with friends or - in my case - the wife and kid.

A super fun dungeon crawler / hack-and-slash game with pixel graphics. Good in singleplayer but way better in co-op. People who look for an old-school game like Gauntlet from the NES era will love this game. I especially liked the challenging boss fights and I was positively surprised by the length of the campaigns.

Oh... and don’t forget the planks!

I've played through this game in co-op with a friend, and it was still kinda boring.
The fighting isn't deep at all, and is very repetitive. The exploration isn't that compelling either.
The game feels empty

The Good:
+ Large world to explore & many secrets to find
+ Good pixel art, w/robust shader and CRT filter options
+ Charming music and sound effects
+ Remembers every enemy killed, gold droped, pot smashed, etc.
+ Includes level editor.

The Bad:
- Combat is very basic, even after upgrades.
- Lacks any randomization between runs.
- Character progression very limited.
- Permanent death possible, while playthrough can take 15+ hours...
- Ending could be better (escape shaking levels > show scoreboard)

Final Thoughts:
This is a game about exploration and patience. If the idea of exploring every nook and cranny of vast pixel-art dungeons for loot and secrets, all while carving a path through mindless hordes of enemies that litter your path sounds like fun, then you'll probably like this game. However if you're looking for something skill based or a game with level grinding / character progression then this is probably not the right game for you.
For me it was fun, so I'll recommend it.

For my taste this game and it's mechanics are too old. It seems like someone wanted to make a game oldschool and fairly succeded in this, but i don't like it. It feels somewhat empty and hard to progress ...
Most times i feel, like i wouldn't progress at all and that i'm dying before getting anywhere near a point, where this game would be fun for me.
If you like oldschool games, that are missing QoL improvements and are somewhat puzzlelike ?, then this game will be fun for you.

Good fun in coop with friends. Decent in single too but depends on your tolerance for running the same maps (no random generation) to get better and win on higher difficulties (selection of difficulty modifiers available). Looks clean and controls well, has a standard spate of characters (though IMO some are much better than others).

it was pretty fun, but in the end you discover that if you didn't complete all 12 secret super-challenges and didn't collect all 12 wooden planks then you lose the game no matter how well you played and that you killed the final boss... like the game just spits in your face after 10 hours of play.

If you choose to play this game, for the love of all things human, make sure you play it with friends. Nothing is sadder in this life than single-player Hammerwatch. It's all the fun of counting to 1000 with the added chance of dying and having to start over from an earlier number. There's a nice variety in character class options, so multiplayer can splash a little fun into the mind-numbing agony of destroying hordes of legions.

If you have no friends, stay away for your own benefit.

Playing through Temple of Sun alone as sorcerer. Game balance is so bad that I cannot recommend this game to anyone. Enemies have way too much HP and bosses are just pure pain. I am struggling with the end game boss and it is not fun at all. Not even challenging fun. Just awful design. Here are its abilities:

* Lots of HP. I guess in range of thousands. My regular attack does 12 points of damage.
* It keeps spawning endless amount of ranged unit.
* Every enemy in the level does fire damage so even if you get hit only once, it keeps burning you.
* In each phase, boss gets new ability. In third phase, it gets tracking fire pillars. In fourth and last phase, it gets tracking fireballs. One hit from either pillar or ball will kill you because of extended fire damage. Unless you use potion but you only have one. So you have at maximum one hit before you die.
* Best part: boss regenerates if you are outside of combat area. And it regens fast. If you die, it has gained all the damaged health back and likely even more. So extra lives are useless because you have to kill it without dying.

I have over 25k gold that I cannot use because there are no upgrades left for sorcerer. Another messed up gameplay design flaw! Got through third phase by just kiting the boss in circular motion. This is the only way I found to survive. Unfortunately, each round only nets you couple hits so this took me perhaps 30 mins of kiting. Who finds this kind of gameplay fun or engaging? Did the dev even play the game and boss? Feels more like just hammering as much difficulty as one can without thinking.

It's fun, and a good time-waster with a few friends.

HOWEVER:
Despite being a somewhat traditional dungeon-crawler, there are no random elements to it. The dungeons remain the same through every playthrough.

I recommend it, but only on sale.

Play with a group or not at all.
I know people hate roguelikes for the same reasons they like them, but this one is bad.

If you're playing alone I can't recommend the experience. It's probably great with a group, but the campaign is the same either way. Playing alone takes far too long to finish the game, and the gameplay is really boring overall.

The map would have been better if you had an option to view the whole map, not just the overlay. Then you could avoid fumbling around trying to find places you haven't been to. Monster waves were too large right from the start and quickly made the game boring.

I've played better roguelikes on my 3DS.

Amazing game if you like dungeon crawler and doesn't mind exploring every nook and cranny. I see some people talking about repititiveness, but eh, I didn't feel like that at all. The secret at the end might either enfuriate you or give you a good laugh (my case). The soundtrack is soooo orgasmic as well. All in all, this game pleased me greatly and I recommend it to anyone that enjoys the genre.

keep getting OpenAL drivers need an update, then when i try to attack my game instantly crashes. This has only started recently. Also my controller keeps randomly disconnecting for a few seconds and then going back to normal, but only in this game.

This game rules. People saying it is repetitive are expecting too much from an indie game.

There are tons of secrets, plenty of hunting down the right path, and each chapter introduces new enemy types. Sure, more enemy types would have been nice but it is a helluva lot of fun exactly how it is. And co-op? Say no more. Gonna finish this, then pick up Heroes of Hammerwatch with my buds.

Can't really recommend the game, it falls short on many of its objectives. Let's talk about the good first. All the classes have fairly different playstyles, the co-op factor is a big plus, UI is very clean and easy to read, and in terms of aesthetic, it looks pretty good for a pixel based game.

Now the bad. Biggest issue, gameplay gets repetitive very fast, you will be on the third floor and already finding that you are not doing anything different. There's low enemy variation, light melee, heavy melee, ranger, and mages; they slowly become more powerful and get a few extra tricks, but the AI and basic strategy remains the same, you feel you are fighting the same enemies all throughout the game. Tons of exploration, which normally is a good thing for this kind of games, the problem is, exploration is almost mandatory (will come back later to this), you need to find every piece of gold and upgrade that you can in order to not get outscaled by your enemies. If you don't properly collect as much as you can, you will eventually not deal enough damage or have enough hp/def to resist more than a hit or two. Insta death traps and laughable traps, there are traps that will 1 or 2 shot you no matter how much hp you have, and the other traps you can just face tank them all day, there's no middle ground or proper scaling on these.

Now the worst. If you want to get the proper ending, you HAVE to find all non-easter egg secrets, otherwise, [spoiler] right at the end, with no warning at all, you lose by not being able to escape the crumbling castle [/spoiler]. Character progression is awful, if you don't have enough gold, you will be hardstuck eventually and lose all your lives; if you have too much gold, you just spam your basic attack followed by your best skill and just plow through your enemies. The final boss, if you have the proper skills and traits leveled up, you just kill it, if not, it's a grindfest and will take you forever.

All in all, it's not a bad game by itself, it's fun for a little bit, it's just very disappointing, it could be so much better with a little bit of extra things added or changed. If you like the genre, and don't mind repetitive gameplay, it's fine, or if you have a few hours to burn with a group of friends.

Really fun co op game. You can play as different characters with different abilities while clearing floors and fighting bosses. You can also level up your abilities as your progress through the game either solo or with 3 friends. I highly recommend this game.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#50 out of 555)... it's time for Hammerwatch.

Hammerwatch is my go-to casual multiplayer ARPG. Super simple controls and mechanics, sprawling labyrinthine levels, and solid pixel art and animation make it a very easy game to jump in and enjoy. Especially with friends.

A really nice rouge-like with distinct classes and a challenging gameplay. Fight your way through 4 different dungeons with serveral layers and a unique boss at the end of every chapter. On top you get a second, shorter campaign in the deserts and there are also some nice workshop campaigns to play afterwards.

The 8-bit pixel art is lovely and there are a lot of secrets to be found. Throughout the game your characters progress further and get new abilities, which really changes the way you play. The game really shines, when played in coop with friends. There is a local couch-coop and an online coop-mode implemented.

Only downside is the low replayability, since the dungeons are premade.
