In jedem Fall: Empfehlenswert!

An insanely well made pixel art game. The production value is off the charts. No wonder it took so long to make it. I especially want to mention the phenomenal sound design and voice acting. This feels like a AAA game packed in an old school Contra-like platformer.

Ι knew i would like this game before i bought it..and you know what? I absolutely LOVED it!!!!! Old school mechanics characterized with simplicity can still offer tons of fun and this is the case with this gem! Have you ever played Contra or other side scrolling shooters? This is even better! As far as the graphics are concerned,they are 16 bit retro style like many titles which tend to appear during the last years. Moreover the music themes and the sound effects are gorgeous! I adore the music in this game.. especially in certain stages! On the other hand concerning the gameplay you will find a lot of different guns and various enemies. Of course the boss battles are for the most part epic and you may find yourself in a tight corner many times..nevertheless i never felt the game is too hard! On the whole what i have to say....... wt? Are you still reading?? Go buy this Masterpiece!!!!!!!!!

I've spent (as of this writing) 57+ hours on this game. It is an absolute 10/10 for me. Arcade game of the year 1992 is exactly right, and honestly some of us have been looking for this game since 1992.

Coop is rock solid, boss fights are fun (tiny quibble here: boss difficulty varies - still a 10/10, don't worry!), and the environments are dope. If you like any kind of dystopian science fiction media by way of Paul Verhoeven you really can't go wrong with Huntdown. Lately I've been listening to audiobooks and just vibing through levels, and it's perfect for that too.

Instead of having a long walk in a level, Huntdown divided one area into different smaller areas, giving each one around 5 mins of gameplay includes a mini boss to battle at the end. I suck at horizon scroll arcade games, I find in shorter levels I make fewer mistakes.

Huntdown has a good control, a good variety of weapons and enemies, one of the few games keep me hooked and want to keep playing. On easy mode (yea, suit me in well) I get a good amount of health pills when making a kill, so I can stay calm. The game is generous on giving supplies, yet still challenging. There are suitcases to collect, at least one placed on a higher floor, one you need to quickly take from an escaping target, the last one can be anywhere. For playstyle, you can clean the area or ignore everyone and head all the way to the exit. There are crate to stop bullet but will eventually be destroyed, oil barrels, doors to hide. You can always see health bar on everyone, easy to make the next move.

Last thing is game shows 1P and 2P. I haven't tried out co-op, but can imagine the fun play with a friend.

This game is one of the funnest games I’ve ever played. The campaign is a blast, and I’ve played it multiple times on multiple platforms. Then Arcade Mode is the icing on the cake, with endless fun and replayability. It is seriously so fun getting combos and collecting scores and bonuses. They really nailed arcade mode.
Huntdown is fun solo or couch co-op. I’ve played a lot solo and enjoyed every moment, and I’ve played enough co-op to confirm that it is incredibly fun. It is like the fun I used to have playing Contra in the glory days of the NES, but with all kinds of modern improvements and enhancements.
Some of my favorite things in Huntdown are the music, sound effects, satisfying explosions, humor and voices, Arcade Mode, and throwbacks to the over-the-top 1980’s. This game is highly polished and you can tell they had a lot of fun making it. This game is not afraid to just be fun, and I love it.
What is my wishlist for the future of Huntdown? An endless arcade mode in Huntdown would be awesome with simplified boss fights. And every 10 or 15 minutes you could enter a little bonus round with a Spy Hunter type driving sequence where you drive to the next area and blow some vehicles up for bonus points by ramming them or firing rockets at them. I’m hoping the developers can put something like this together as DLC. I’d pay as much for that as I did the game itself!
As it is I easily rate Huntdown as one of the funnest games I’ve ever played and without hesitation a 10/10.

Probably the most detailed pixel art in pixel art games. It's so detailed and filled from front to back. Really neat in style. Good soundtrack blasting on top of that while getting city rid of all of the gang members and leaders.

Gameplay and controls themselves aren't nothing impressive and pretty usual, but get the work done well enough. Moving, shooting, throwables and dodge/slide are basically what one has going on in Huntdown. There is wide arrange of weaponry to find and use, some are hidden very well in secrets and usually these include some reference/easter egg towards something else like Blade Runner scene.

As well as weapons come in wide variety either melee or ranged, so does enemies and what they do. Some might run you over with motorcycles, while other run away with collectible cases behind other enemies. Then there's the boss at the end of each level. Totaling five levels per area and four areas which is total of 20 bosses. From which the Grandmaster Yuudai was bit of bullshit boss and needed pretty good positioning. Areas and enemies go hand in hand so first Punkrockers, then Ice Hockey Team, Greasers and lastly Ninjas/Samurais. These can be tackled with selected mercenary/bounty hunter that can be changed at any levels start to another, all of them have bit different base gun and throwable item which can be changed to the ones found from ground. Either making flames going higher or showing some slap tricks with hockey sticks.

Overall good 5 hours of side scroll shooting, boss fighting and collectible looting.

THe HUNTDOWN is so much fun to play either solo or with a friend. There is plenty of weaponry, levels, types of standard enemies, unique bosses, and laughs. Also, you can play as three different characters with different starting weapons and different starting equipment. You can change your character at any time, but you will have to restart the level you are currently on (not a big deal). I initially was trying to beat every level by eliminating all enemies, not dying, and finding all of the secret stashes (completing all 3 simultaneously is a challenge as you progress). As I got closer to the end of the game and completed these challenges up until that point, I lost my progress. I'm not sure how, but I think my son might have accidentally deleted my progress. As a result, I ended up just speed running the game from the beginning. This is a game I intended to play on my steam deck (when I get it) and still will do so. After you beat the game, you unlock the badass difficulty (I have not attempted). I can see myself going back to play the game on hard and possibly badass.

I have barely touched the arcade mode, but the game does recommend you finish the story before attempting arcade mode. Based on the 10 minutes I played of arcade, I can see myself repeatedly going back to play it.

The game is great to play if you only have 15 or 30 minutes or hours to play. It is highly addictive. If you enjoy retro, side scrolling shooters, you should love this game. I can't think of anything I didn't like in this game.

Please give us HUNTDOWN 2!

This game is an amazingly well written love letter to late 80's early 90's side scroll shooters like Contra and Metal Slug, and even some tribute to other games from that era like Double Dragon, Hit The Ice, Pit Fighter, and many more. Lots of bits of modern retro cyberpunk as well. The retro references and dialogues are vast.

Excellent platform shooter, where you are transported to a world of action movie references from the 70's, 80's and 90's, with very detailed environments, very characteristic enemies and weapons in each level, secrets, different challenges at each level, challenging bosses, charismatic characters, this game is very complete, simple and delivers a lot!

Oh and I couldn't forget to mention the great Synthwave/Retrowave-style soundtrack!

Maybe just not my type of game. Promising action side-scroller that proves to be fun for a few hours until the frustration creeps in. Extremely punishing and I have no patience anymore.

Pros:
- cool retro style shooter
- pixel art style is visually appealing
- sound design, game play has that old school arcade feel
- large variety of bosses with interesting mechanics, figuring out how to defeat the bosses is fun (actually fighting them, is a chore because of clunky controls and things listed below)

Cons:
- visually chaotic when playing - often lose track of characters
- in coop, during boss fights, players can go off screen
- snipers from like four screens away can shoot you
- game seems to go for quantity over quality in terms of level and enemy design - it throws everything and the kitchen sink at you
- to revive a friend, you have to button mash - which is fine - however, there is a noticeable delay before your character can move again, given how hectic and fast paced everything else is (and enemy aggression) this just feels bad
- when being revived, you can also just die immediately by getting stun locked before you even get control of your character again
- explosions will cover your screen, which is cool, except you can't see your character who is likely getting shot, so you will die
- the things that can hit you - sometimes don't look like they've hit you, but you will get hit anyway even though it looks like you have dodged it successfully

Take the most iconic action movies of the 80s: Escape from New York, Running Man, City Cobra, Robocop and many more, add over the top one-liners, sarcasm, explosives, blood, breed that into gorgeous retro-pixel art and the sound of neon lights plus a heavy smell of cigarettes; you get HUNTDOWN.

Besides that this game is a piece of art, its a fun game to play. The controls are on point, the difficulty is well balanced. Not too easy but not Blasphemous or Cuphead hard. No one should be afraid to add this game to his/her libary.

Definetly recommended.

I just don't get steam users, some very mediocre games often get an overwhelmingly positive rating. This game is very pretty and has some nice style but has very basic and uninspiring mechanics with some game-rage inducing elements due to poor platforming design. Uninteresting generic soundtrack that just repetitively drones the same 80's inspired guitar themes. Zero replay value since all three characters are mostly the same. The only plus is that it's short. Get it if it's heavily discounted.

Score: 9/10
Nostalgic mechanics and art are combined with deeper nostalgia for a masterfully fleshed out 80s cyberpunk action thriller.
While maintaining the obsolete run and gun methods hurts in some aspects, Huntdown accepts these as necessary and consistently builds levels and enemies around the limitations and framework it sets up. Barring a few minor hiccups, slight modernizations of these quirks makes for a surprisingly smooth combat system that, to the keen player (not me), can be utilized to avoid all damage with relative ease.
Tight packaging of individual setting themes, combined with simplistic, unique bosses, with a very comforting spread of character, makes for a pristine sense of environment, even if the story, if there is one, is lacking.
Art is very pleasantly cohesive and nearly top tier in quality, with highlight moments worthy of screenshotting.
While the ending is visually spectacular, some odd difficulty spikes boss to boss can be a minor impediment, and the voice acting ranges from mediocre to terrible, though it's up to the player whether this befits the retro theme more than the alternative.
Huntdown is pretty good, man.

Easily a contender for best game of 2021. Just like with Katana Zero, everything in this game is spot on. Great soundtrack. Awesome retro pixel graphics. Smooth responsive gameplay with a challenging but fair difficulty. Not too long, not too short. You pick one of three bounty hunters, who have different playstyles, based on their primary/secondary weapons. Every single boss fight was original and uniquely challenging. High replayability thanks to different bounty hunters, four difficulties and Arcade Mode, where you have only 1 life to finish a whole stage.

I never tried co-op mode yet, but I had so much fun playing just by myself. I'm sure it's a blast playing it with a friend. 10/10

I bought this game because I'm a huge fan of Broforce and Steam listed this as being similar.

I played through the game on Normal difficulty. and, while it was an okay diversion, there was definitely room for improvement. Combat is slow and clunky. Being able to sprint would be nice. All three characters play exactly the same, so why even switch? Dialog is unironically cringe and ceaseless. Yes, I get this is supposed to be an 80's dystopia parody, but it just keeps hitting the same beat again and again ad nauseam.

Also, the ending feels like a cop-out. There should definitely be an additional act.

Can't believe a Pixel game managed to become one of my favorite games of all times. The retro feel and theme makes the whole experience much greater. Hope there's more of these type of games in the future with retro elements.

This game is tight, its like a tactical Contra. Loved the art and game play, would like to see a part 2, maybe add some 8 directional shooting, options to start with a different weapon, and maybe some light RPG elements, level up and you can add health, add weapon skills, etc... Over all, solid game! Thanks!

Fantastic action side scroller with nostalgic gameplay in cyberpunk environments from an alternative 80's futuristic time. Double fun promised with Co-op mode, so thats twice as many explosions.

-This game is like the combination of old PC sidescroller like Duke Nukem (pre-3d), NES Contra, and arcade Metal Slug with 80s /90s cyberpunk and action movie tropes.
-The cheesy humor, plot, and music is top notch. Might look like a shallow nostalgia at a glance but once you played it, they even spiritually nailed the silliness of similar games/story in that era. The guns, the character acting and lines, the costume design, etc.
-It's not as fast paced as I thought it would be. But actually that makes it relaxing to play. Easy to get into and the challenge is just right for me without being frustrating.
-I like how the enemies and characters are pretty diverse.
-I haven't finished the game but I feel like this game will have similar replay value like Streets of Rage 4. Not because of there are many things to do or getting better at the game but because it's somehow just simply tight, fun, and arcadey to replay.

If the 'Terminator' film franchise and the film 'The Warriors' met and had a baby....and meanwhile, the 'Robocop' series and the 'Blade Runner' movies met and had a baby.....and then, by some miracle those two babies met and fugged, HUNTDOWN would be the game that they birthed.

An impeccably well-made game with fantastic graphics, sound-design, controls, and atmosphere - HUNTDOWN is a terrific value and a must-play for anyone looking for action-packed side-scrolling platform-shooting fun.

HUNTDOWN
~~~~~~~~~~~
Huntdown is a tip of the hat to a beloved genre of 16bit arcade shooters. And not just any arcade shooter, a proper 16bit, side-scroller action full of all features that we old-school arcade-goers love and adore.
The game graciously sets up its tone for the chaotic nature of its gameplay and overall story-arc with a brief yet classic intro with one of the most 80s things imaginable; a heavy deep-voiced actor narrating a fantastic plotline.
Plot: In the distant 21st-century nations have collapsed from the ruins of war. And from those ruins arose a society run by the mega-corporations. Fueled by greed and profits, these corporations provide jobs and security for those who obey their rules.
An alternative path is one of crime and gang affiliations; a constant power struggle bowls for the control of the cities between these mega-corporations and the gangs.
When the streets become too much for the citizens they call the authority’s ruthless law enforcers, who will go to any length possible. And when things become bad enough and the authorities are in trouble, the Bounty Hunters are called in; an elite group of mercenaries driven by profits and bloodlust. No matter how ruthless the gangs can be, these Bounty Hunters can go one up.
Gameplay: This game is a benchmark of what arcade side-scrollers should be on PCs. The game starts off with a brief intro into the game's backstory; it pretty much sums it up and puts a great flavor into the overall theme and gameplay itself.
The basic game is simple and tends to be greatly detailed after the old-school arcade, with its simple movement, jump, and cover machines. Thankfully the game provides much-needed key bind change for single and dual player modes.
Although players won’t be able to use the same keys even when they use two different keyboards, which is such a bummer; it’s not the game's fault, it’s just windows.
The game has two game modes to choose from:
Story mode: Where you go after gangs in order to eliminate them and their bosses and sub-bosses, who count as a bounty. Before each mission and bounty, you are given a summary brief with Intel on each bounty.
There are currently four unique gangs present in the game. The game does a great job at putting these different gangs and their bosses into different and sort of unique group according to their theme and outlook.
The level progresses each time you collect a bounty by killing bosses. This trend will continue until you reach the final bosses and get to the end game where you beat his final form.
Arcade mode: Basically the same as the story mode but here the motivation is very clear and streamlined. Kill as much as you can and get through all the checkpoints to get the game saved.
You have a limited amount of lifeline and after you’ve died enough, you will need to pay from your profits in order to get back in the game with another set of lifelines.
No clean bounties will be declared in this mode, but you will face the bosses and Level progression will mean leveling up the difficulty as well.
Weapons: The game features a handsome quantity of weapons to go through. You will be given a primary weapon and a limited number of throwables, which are surprisingly powerful and balanced out to kill everything with enough shots.
But the main fun and value of the game is where you get to use weapons dropped from the enemies; these are powerful, and some even come with a greater fire rate.
Ranging from Katanas to Mini-gun-styled canons, they are balanced, powerful, and go great with the hectic gameplay.
Bosses and enemy types: As mentioned earlier, there are four unique gangs throughout the city, and each has its own customs, style, and environment to rule.
The gangs and bosses are very well detailed, and each can be easily identified. I can say the same for their fight style as well.
The bosses are really cool, with their own unique looks, play style, and abilities. As you progress through the game the bosses become more ruthless, powerful and altogether badass.
World design: A fantastic looking, highly-stylized 16-bit aesthetic. The game pays great attention to detail and lighting.
The levels are fairly spacious, although in certain areas and boss fights, I would’ve loved to have seen bigger arenas.
Music and sound effects: The game features a banger of an intro music. The background music during the gameplay was great as well.
The sound effects were bang on for the game's overall theme; from explosions to small arms fire, everything fits in perfectly.
Positives:
+ Fantastic Story-arc
+ Shared/split screen co-op
+ Fast-paced instance gameplay
+ Awesome music
+ Deep 80s-style narration and voiceover
+ Fantastic 16bit game design
+ Detailed environment
+ Unique and fun bosses
Negatives:
- I have no negative things to say about this title
Huntdown is just a perfect example of how great arcade titles can be on the PC side. From its fast-paced arcade action to its Steller authentic style. This game is just perfect for arcade lovers.
10/10
Not as good as Broforce, Katana Zero or Hotline Miami . Feels a bit more like Mother Russia Bleeds which is of course a brawler...so.....not bad but overrated. Anyway it looks great but leans too much on the never ending 80´s revival. Controls are
neat and medium means hard which i like. If you like action platforming give it a *shot* ... ...
Hunt down the baddies
Huntdown is a side-scrolling action platformer with emphasis on cover shooting mechanics. It is set in a dystopian cyberpunk world, where crime is rampant and bounties high. That is all you need to know about the world. Well, you only need to know about the bounties as you take control of one of the three bounty hunters.
Bounties high and bullets fly
At the start of the game, you get to choose from one of the three hunters. Each has a different starting loadout, which means a different gun and throwable weapon. A neat little feature is that you can change the hunters midway through a playthrough without losing any progress, letting you figure out your favourite while all hell breaks loose.
On top of the characters, you can find various weapons ranging from guitars to heat-seeking missile launchers, which can either be hidden in boxes or secret caches or can be dropped by enemies wielding them. You can always carry your basic weapon as well as one extra you picked up. Found weapons have limited ammo so you cannot just spray willy-nilly even though you can find ammo for each weapon fairly often. These are accompanied by throwable weapons which include Molotov cocktails, grenades or throwing knives. All these things combined create a nice concise package where everyone will find a weapon that just suits their playstyle.
Huntdown is not a run'n'gun game in any shape or form. As already hinted, there are cover mechanics that you will have to use in almost any fight if you want to have a chance of surviving, especially on hard difficulty. You can duck behind boxes and cars or hide in the shadows on a garage, making you invincible to incoming fire but not explosions or melee attacks. Thus, even if you are hiding behind a cover, you are never truly safe.
Cyberpsychos… Oh wait, wrong game
The game is divided into 4 major thematical sections, each divided into smaller levels. Each of the sections is based around one of the gangs occupying the in-game city. Those include brutal hockey fanatics, a biker gang or fashion obsessed crazies. And this is what made me fall in love with the game. You do not really get to know a lot in terms of story about these gangs or about why things are the way they are, yet these individual gangs ooze personality, mainly through the location and character design.
Each of the levels is finished with a mini-boss fight against one of the side-bounties. These encounters are simple in terms of mechanics but fun in execution. As an example, one of the fights is against a hockey fanatic who just skates around and when she hits you with her stick, you just go flying around (and yes, you can end up in a goal). Another is against a biker leader, who has a huge javelin on his flying bike and behind him is a lady who keeps shouting how great he is. Simply put, the mini-bosses are a nice little treat after an endless gauntlet of enemies.
Each of the gangs has their big bad leader and those are at the end of the final level of each of the sections. These are the big fights you were waiting for and they deliver. As the game progresses, each of the main bounties gets more complicated and challenging to face. Each of the fights has multiple attacks, special gimmicks and even multiple phases to keep you on your toes. If you are not careful, you will be demolished in seconds and have to restart the whole fight over.
The future of music and video
Huntdown looks amazing. Even though it is a pixel-art game, there is so much attention to detail, from backdrops setting the scene to individual sprites. I am a huge fan of pixel-art and this game not only managed to satisfy that craving, but it also left a very pleasant aftertaste that I will gladly revisit.
Same can be said for the soundtrack and sound design. The music has a cyberpunk feel to it and complements the atmosphere to a great effect. It is almost impossible to imagine Huntdown without its simplistic yet memorable soundtrack. Same applies to the sound design, where every single sound is distinct and by the time you are nearing the end, you will be able to safely recognize what kind of enemy is coming at you just based on the sound.
Glitch in the system
It almost pains me to say but there are a few issues that the game suffers from. First, there is the typos and mistakes in the English text which are a minor oversight. When I first saw the main menu, I felt like I am about to play some random game made in 20 minutes during a lunch break.
The second issue is that the game sometimes breaks the difficulty curve it created and leads to an unreasonable spike. A few moments ago, you were mowing down an army of gangsters only to get suddenly hit from 4 different directions, exploded, and hit with a baseball bat off the map. That is mainly the issue of enemy placement, which is fortunately not random, so you can create your own strategies, but some parts will feel outright unfair.
Bounty collected
Overall, Huntdown is an amazing title that I cannot recommend enough. If you are a fan of side-scrolling action platformers, this game will be right up your alley. At 16,79 euros, it is a fair price considering there are extra challenges for completionists as well as co-op mode, which adds more bullets and mayhem to the already existing one.
I am mid 40ies, my first gaming pc was a C64 and I haven't played much for the best part of 25 years. This game is the reason I bought a controller and I absolutely love it: vibe, music, graphics, simple singleplayer fun with easy to remember controls. Perfection!
