I can recommend this game to Twitch streamers to increase audience participation. You can do a run or two, have your viewers send in their own drones and let them either mess with you or support you.

If you have the game yourself and watch a gamer stream, you can send in your leveled-up drones for extram mayham. :)

As a solo player it a nice game for inbetween other things. Level your drone(s), prepare it for the next interactive stream.

Right now - after just month - two updates have already been released and more are (according to the devs on the steam forums) are in the pipeline.

If you don't want to shell out the money right now, keep it on your watchlist and wait for the right moment.

Let me start by saying this is not a game I usually play or would enjoy. It is just not my type of game. But.. that being said I put in about 28 hours just last week. At the moment of writing I am top 2 of the world for both maps. And I have played on twitch with support from the number one and getting sabotaged by the number 3 of the world.

No about the game. It is an infinite shooter, where you level up your support drone and fight enemies. Your main character starts at level 1 each run. A run lasts until you die. And as the title states the levels are infinite. Enemies keep getting stronger to a point that getting hit by a tiny monster on a very high level can take you out in one shot (though I haven't gotten that far yet). So typically you will be doing longer and longer runs. After every run your drone gets xp and levels up, giving you more health and damage (allowing you to reach higher levels). It can be very grindy when playing alone. But it also has awesome Twitch integration, so other can send their (high level) drones to help you out and give you enormous health/attack boosts. Even people without the game can send drone to help and they will also level up. If that person later buys the game. They will start with their already leveled up drone. So sending a drone to assist a friend has two benefits: it makes the run easier for the player and you level up your drone without doing a single thing (other then sending it).

TLDR As someone who doesn't typically like this type of game I enjoy it very much, so whether you like this type of game or not I think you could enjoy it either way!

The World

World? What world? Oh… Year 4024… It is 20 years after the interplanetary war… World is in ruin… Combat units called Dronin were not needed anymore. So you play as one of them. Soldiers were not needed anymore so they try their luck in arenas where you slaughter them all. So war ended and soldiers are not needed? Logic? No need to rebuild the world? The intro says we are on the mercy of viewers whims… but there are no viewers anywhere and not a single whim… no one ever decided if someone should live or die… You just fight to kill as many enemies as you can before you die. And well that is the world right now. So we don’t know who fought with who and who won and how the world looks. We just enter arenas to fight, kill and later die. There is no more info about the world, monsters, enemies, planets or anything about anything in this world during gameplay. No story and bits of information anywhere about anything. It is more like picking any roguelike and playing it endless mode.

Gameplay

This game does not use mouse. You use WSAD to move and arrowkeys for attacking and space for dodge. You start with Hokori that is a Fire Samurai. You quickly forget about him as you clear a few arenas and unlock Mayuko an Ice Ninja and you will use her for the rest of your play time as she is just much better. Fire Samurai can take 2 hits not 1 before his armor breaks but he must attack enemies with melee and only his skills that use energy are ranged while Ice Ninja basic attack is a range attack that hits enemies 3 times and that means you don’t need an extra armor that Fire Samurai gets as enemies will be dead before they can get close to you most of the times if you use dodge at right moments.

Kills give you XP and when you lvl up you can choose 1 from 3 randomly chosen skills/passives by game. That also makes Ice Ninja much better as active skills that let’s you froze enemies around you makes you live longer and also passive skills like frozen aura that slows down enemies makes you harder to kill, any passive that gives more dmg, or attack speed, or freeze chance or crit chance or maim chance is just better for Ice Ninja as she attacks 3 times with her main attack from a range and that means 3 times the chance to apply any debuff, freeze, crit, and more damage faster than 1 Fire Samurai hit in melee and you don’t get hit by enemies because you don’t get close to them.

But when you die you lose everything you had and you are only awarded with 2 things – 1 that gives you something and the other that is useless. The first thing is XP for your Drone so you can level him up and most important thing in this level up is that he gives you more passive character bonuses of max life, damage multiplier, cooldown, armor and also 1 specialization point to increase Drone attack or healing or shield but I don’t know how important these ones are as sometimes Drone attacks 1 enemy and later he wait for you to kill a few before he attacks again and there is no info if he is supposed to do that and not help in the combat for 80% of time or is this a bug and no info how much each point that you put in Drone specializations gives. You also get 1 skill point for your Drone with each level up and you can use it to increase at start only the level of your Rocket Storm skill that can attack only 1 enemy and is useless after 1 hour of playing this game. The second thing you get are green coins that you can spend for 2 things. Reset drone skill and yes skill not specialization point as these ones are fixed forever once you increase Drone attack, healing or shield. But when you get 750 green coins you want to reset Drone skill as you can only pick 1 from 4 available and the one you start with the Rocket Storm can only attack 1 single enemy and even if the enemy is dead rest of the rockets will hit the enemy body not other enemies. Flash Freeze also attacks only 1 enemy and as you will be freezing enemies with your Ice Ninja it is pointless. So you should only choose Poison Cloud or Tazer as these are the only 2 to attacks group of enemies. I found Poison Cloud to be better.

The other thing you can spend green coins after changing the useless drone skill into something usefull is how the drone looks and that costs much more while also giving you nothing stat wise and you won’t care how your drone looks while you fight enemies. Drone model, shader and decal gives you nothing. If they would at least give you some stat bonuses it would be worth to pick some to suit your play style. Also sometimes the drone just get lost and it is good that they make him teleport to you or rather fall from the sky at you.

The problem with attacking enemies for me is more visible when you play as Ice Ninja as game automatically picks what enemy you try to shoot at and sometimes it is the enemy that I damaged before dodge and want to finish him but at other times game pick the boss while his 6-10 adds are chasing you and you have to move in many different directions to shot at them not the boss or sometimes game pick the enemy that is to your one side and far from you while on the other side you have 3 enemies close to you. I think using a mouse instead of arrowkeys to pick targets and use skills would be much better but sadly you have to use arrowkeys and can't change setting to use mouse.

Enemy AI is a mess. Sometimes they run at you like they should other times they run around you in circles like they don’t know where you are or are stuck running on an object or wall or fence for a few seconds before they notice you are attacking and killing them. I hope they will fix it after it comes out from EA.

Conclusion

Overall it is an ok game for a few hours or for about 20 hours if you want to get 100% achievements. It is not bad but it is not great also. It is just a simple roguelike. I would give it a neutral option but there is noly thumb up or down or Steam so I will give a thumb up as this game may be better in the future.

Right now it is 5/10 for me.

As written in the description Infinite Dronin is a roguelike hack-and-slash game. You fight your way through waves of enemies in consecutive arenas - always at your side your little steel buddy.

First of all the game does something right, it's addicting: after every run you want to start a new one just to reach the next arena (and you were so close...). You get used to the enemy movements quite fast and with every level up of your drone you are able to get further. During a run there are plenty of different skills to choose from so every run is unique. As I don't have a Twitch account I can't really test and review the Twitch integration, but based on other reviews/gameplay videos it seems well implemented and a lot of fun.

As already written before the movements of the player feel a bit sluggish, especially with Hokori in meele combat. You get used to that and get the timing when to attack/dash/move, but I would love to smoothly slash through enemy waves with style (hopefully in one of he upcoming updates). I'm looking forward to all improvements to come - boss fights (already on the road map), more characters, extra hard encounters with your personal archenemy, ....

Overall I really enjoyed playing Infinite Dronin so far (also suitable for the casual players among us) and I'm excited about the upcoming updates!

This review is based on the pre-release version of the game. I was approached by the devs and asked to stream their game. I got the key for free, besides that no money was exchanged.

If you're looking for a game with fun Twitch integration you can give this one a try for sure. They way the devs solved the integration via an overlay is marvelous. I've not seen a single game that avoided spammed chats the way Infinite Dronin did. The only negative aspect in that regard is that the way Twitch works mobile viewers can't participate yet. The options for viewers to interact are numerous and set up in a way that they fertilize a nice back and forth between streamer and chat. Viewers can help you or mess with you, it's in their hands. Also anyone who participates can take their drone from the integration back to their own copy of the game. That's also a unique feature.

When it comes to the gameplay there is some minor criticism I've to express. The movement of the character feels a bit clunky in the beginning, but you get used to that. The dash could be faster and some enemy attacks seem hard to avoid. I'm sure these issues can be addressed in one of the next patches and might even be, at the point you're reading this review. I enjoyed my time with Infinite Dronin very much and I'm looking forward to play it again with the next updates!
