Über das Spiel

Jagged Alliance Back in Action is a contemporary remake of the latest title in the much-loved Jagged Alliance series of turn-based mercenary-themed strategy games.

Designed from the ground up to offer a modern gaming experience, Back in Action showcases an updated isometric 3D look and interface, highly detailed character models and a variety of new gameplay features.
Back in Action takes players to the fictitious country of Arulco, where a ruthless dictator has seized power and only a small group of rebels stand to resist her. Tasked with freeing the island from the dictator?s iron grip, players will command rebel and mercenary forces while using tactical, diplomatic and economic tools to keep troops supplied and ready for the next flight, all while commanding them directly in nail-biting battles.

Back in Action?s innovative ?plan & go? combat system combines real-time strategy (RTS) with turn-based elements to guarantee that the intricacies of tactical warfare are rendered in dynamic, exciting gameplay. This challenges would-be commanders to master not only strategy and tactical combat, but also to maximize their team?s capabilities through RPG-like character advancement.

Key features:

  • Unrivaled mix of combat (tactics), roleplay, business and strategy
  • Innovative ?Plan & Go? combat system combines RTS gameplay with turn-based elements
  • Realistic war setting with authentic-looking firearms
  • Laptop/computer menu as a central anchor point for the player
  • Assemble your own unit of mercenaries from numerous unique mercenaries
  • Simultaneous control of multiple squads using a strategic map
  • Convincing characters who interact with and comment on the game events
  • All the dialog has audio
  • Acquire resources by capturing mines and encampments

Also meine erste Rezension.

- Meanwhile in Meduna fehlt...

Pro:

- ein toller, viel versprechender Name
- annehmbare 3D Ansicht

Contra:

Meine Empfehlung an alteingesessene: Lieber Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire kaufen.

Ohne Charaktererstellung, ohne mich!

Game is AWESOME and with the right mods (Realism rebalanced or Combat Evolved) it's a total gem that's sucked up a hundred plus hours of my time. I just cant get enough of the micro-managing and there's literally a million possibilities of who you want in your squads and how to outfit them. I've only ever played to about half the game or less and then left it for a year or two and then come back and started over (on my third or fourth start now lol) but every time I restart it's like a new fresh game. Can't recommend it enough and if you're a jagged alliance fan then this is the fix until the newest JA comes out... Viva la JA!

Get this when it's on sale.
I got it 75% off on Winter Sale and for $5, yes this game is worth it.

Basically, this is the game;
The Expendables meets R6 siege: real-time tactics edition, but tragically watered down edition.

This is sadly the closest you're going to get to a strategy game that allows that specific C4-style dynamic entry (as far as I know) which is a shame because that's a specific niche I'd love to see more of IN THE STRATEGY GENRE.

(Also, before you ask, NO! It's NOT the same without C4, and from a top-down pov TOGETHER. Fuck off Xcom and R6)

This game feels way too much like a tech demo, which is also a shame because you can clearly tell from playing that this is a game that's been built to be built upon.

There is no character creation, which I think is also tragic, because if you look at the Mercs, it becomes way too easy to visualize how it could've been done. Appearance might've been pain to implement, but it wouldn't have been impossible.

So, yea. This game is something that if you can find at a retail store for 5-10 bucks, GET IT. It's not worth full price. It's a niche game with specific dynamic entry StratTac gameplay I wish was more commonplace (or if the Steam Recommended wasn't broke AF, it would actually show me what I want to see. Not what it's trying to sell me).

Also, there are urban combat environments, but you have to make quite the hike to get to them and they are... Challenging to say the least.

The enemies aren't the best equipped, but when all it takes to put you into the ground is either a 9mm or a machete, then that doesn't really matter because you can stun-lock enemies to death, AND they can do the EXACT SAME to you!

The advantage of First Strike, guerrilla warfare, and ambush tactics are already something that's just nice to appreciate when done correctly in a game, but here, it's importance is crucially exaggerated to nail it into your head how much it means the difference of life or death for your mercs.

Xcom 2 has you start, equivalently to an already well-armed regime that simply lost it's first encounter.

Here, you ACTUALLY start from the bottom with $40K worth of USD (as it was worth, back in the 2010's), and you're actually targeting key objectives (Diamond mines for economy, factories, equipment warehouses, ect.) that upon completion, cripple the bad guys.

It's like you're, I dunno - actually playing a game of tug-of-war chess against an opposing force, and your victories actually mean something, as you slowly cripple the enemy in scalpel-like precision.

In Xcom 2, it just felt like I was bumble-mucking around, racing against a doomsday clock. You're definitely A LOT more like a one-handed hammer in that game (Then again, this is true for the post-EU/EW games as a whole, because resources aside from manpower aren't really a concern).

Don't get me wrong. If you want to play that way here, sure go ahead, but you'll find out real quickly that grenades and ammo can quickly burn through your pockets.

Xenonauts kinda gets it, but their TU system messes with how you can use explosives, and at times, that system dicks you over to the point that if you're not going to abuse grenades, don't bother at all.

In JA:BIA, this isn't an issue as you can toss a grenade as long as you have a grenade in question.

TL;DR,

It's flawed with it's pros and cons, but it's easily a competent StraTac game that stands firmly apart from the titles it gets compared to.
It does absolutely feel like a tech demo, which is a shame because I would've loved to have seen this idea realized, instead of left at the mercy of more brutal games like Kenshi.

The game itself doesn't go beyond a single island and you can speed-run the game to be as short as six minutes, which I think is just sad and proves my concluding point as follows.

If it's on sale and you can get this for less than $10, GET IT.
It's not worth $20. You can do better for $20, but this game is worth giving a shot if you can catch it on sale.

7/10 - Flawed but fun

+ Unique JA approach to combat TBT with real time action punctuated with pause as needed
+ Great environment building on previous entries
+ Some variety to settings forcing you to adapt your tactics
+ Nice mixture of stealth, assault, sniper and grenades to knock through opposition
+ Engine serviceable with clean UI and reduced complexity
+ Stats add another wrinkle to exploration & combat
+ Mods enhance the AI to something to behold

- Accessibility - Shortcuts/inputs leave a lot to be desired; no remapping available easily
- 2nd and 3rd act drag
- Fetch/turn in to quest giver missions suck
- Grenade launcher fire blows up in your face frequently
- Balance issues, insane difficulty spikes

I tried playing this on release and dropped it; coming back 9 years later with more patience and experience playing games the experience was enjoyable. Hard to get into if you're not already a fan of TBT/TBT real-time genre

Not half bad really. Works better with popular mod too. Be warned, if you succeed in finding the rare collectors item with the $1M reward then the game becomes quite easy as you can buy whatever you want whenever you want, and hire all the mercs at once. It makes you get a bit gung-ho with the now worthless lives of your team members!
It can be a bit grinding at times but I’d give it overall 8/10.

This one came out a few years ago and I have avoided it because of bad reviews and because for some unknown crazy reason the devs decided to make it real time. However it has just come up on Steam sale, so what the hell.
It has the same mercs, and premise and goal of JA2, to free Arulco and kill Dedriana. If you have never played JA2 you might think this game quite interesting. If you have played JA2, it is just awful by comparison. Everything about it is a second rate version of the original, from the merc portraits to the voice acting. Okay it’s 3D, so you can zoom and pan the map, but you really need that ability because the tactical maps are so badly designed that it’s often difficult to find your mercs or the enemy. The isometric view of a game like JA2 requires some discipline in map design, so the player can see what’s going on at all times.

But the biggest mistake of all is the devs choice of pausable real time rather than turn based. It’s like they failed to see what was so good about the way JA2 played. They just missed the point of the player being able to focus on the activity of a particular merc at a particular moment, rather like a chess game. With Back in Action, you can be focusing on getting one merc to do something when you will hear another merc cry out that they are being shot at, and they will often do nothing to save themselves. You rush over to direct the merc being shot at, when someone else shouts that they have made contact with the enemy. You focus on that merc, only to discover that the enemy they have made contact with is quite far away and no immediate threat to them. Meanwhile, the first merc starts complaining that they are also taking hits, etc, etc, etc. With JA2 you were in control of your squad at all times, with Back in Action you are only in control when you pause the game and give orders.
All in all a very frustrating arcade-like game with none of the depth of the original.

I do really like the mixed real time tactics mixed with the ability to stop and cue up moves.
I dislike the fact that you need to loot every dead enemy individually even at the end of combat.
I like the huge array of weapons. And the challenge of finding ammo to fit.
The game does feel like it got pushed out the door and some of the content got truncated.
Too bad the company that made the game has abandoned it. More updates would be great.
My 1 real pet peeve playing it is the camera angles. You cannot look UP HILL. Everything is downward angles. The camera needed improvements that we will never see.

Firstly I am a big fan of JA and JA2 (and to a lesser extent JA:Deadly Games). Currently this is the only JA game outside of the originals worth playing. There is a bit of a learning curve but once you get into the game its quite fun. I like the engine but I still feel overall the game is lacking compared to the older JA2 (which is still more fun to play). I put this down to missing out on generating your own merc as well as missing out on much of the character and interactions of the various mercenaries in the original games. Still I do like this version and think its worth a play especially if you are a fan of the earlier games.

Love JA - Back in Action. Overall it has the most type of modern day weapons with good simulated damage. The graphic is good for the period of time that is was conceived but could use a good updating. It would be nice to have the exploding head back (hollow point ammo) and maybe a limb or two blasted way from a 50 cal BMG or a direct hit from a rocket gun.

I am an old retired combat arms soldier. I have been playing Jagged alliance and it's many versions for years. This game never fails to please me. I have used all kinds of squad tactics successfully. The bad guys can even hear you. Create a gauntlet. Make some noise at the apex. Wait. They will come to check it out. By pausing the game, you can dictate the movements and even the individual shots for each of your mercs. Then, un-pause the game. Bad guys drop dead. Back in action adds to the game by allowing you to go in down to near ground level and has several added features. One of the greatest features from Jagged alliance 2 was left out. The mental exam used for creating your personal leader character. Now you just control a body for hire and deploy it to the island. I have, as of now, not been able to get items other than ammo to combine into one unit. If this makes little sense to you, play the game for a day or two. It will all come to light.

I have played all JA games and I really like Back in Action and Cross fire. In fact I think it's the best JA version so far. It's faster pace than JA2 but still under control. Think people are a bit too stuck with JA2 and not full enjoying themselves in the new ones.

What would better for JA series, is not to changing the way of playing the games, but to create new stories and new contents. A successful story is what stays in a player's mind the most.

A classic that captured the minds of countless tactical role-playing game enthusiasts back in 1999. It had superb turn-based combat, mercenaries with larger than life personalities and loads of guns and gadgets. Overthrowing queen Deidranna and freeing Arulco was a quest for the ages. Jagged Alliance - Back in Action is a remake of Jagged Alliance 2, but fails to capture the magic of its predecessor. Turn-based combat is gone and the mercenaries have lost their edge. The visuals are up to date and roaming Arulco is still a treat, but getting rid of fog of war is a huge mistake.

Jagged Alliance - Back in Action is not a bad game, but pales in comparison to its father.

I was enjoying this game for 36 hours. I took my time and moved slowly. That is not how they intended you to play the game. The difficulty curve is sharp. I went from maintaining four or five different saves to making a save anytime I moved a character. I really like this game and want to recommend it but i cannot. The game becomes impossible after a certain point. I have to go back and forth defending settlements that I cannot staff enough mercenaries. I talked about taking my time. Once you capture anymore territory they enemy will come at you with a force.

If you decided to pick this game up anyway let me just tell you that you need to have the perfect squad for any situation. Otherwise you will be save scumming your way through the entire game.

Also after patch 1.13.
Still not Jagged Alliance as it's supposed to be. Not even close.
Fights are still quirky and finnicky mainly because of the questionable design choice of using real-time combat, supported by active pause-function which just doesn't work out like the original turn based way the series used to be played in the past. It's stressful and it sucks.
Also: Why can I just detonate certain walls and not *every goddamn building* like it used to be?!

No.. no. This still isn't a worthy successor but just some uninspired and loveless merc-tactical copycat game with some similarities to JA.

I've found this game both fun and frustrating at the same time, but completely entertaining. Since my stroke it's been impossible to play any of the RPG shooters in my collection. There's a lot of turn-based games out there but not every one is good. This is one of the good ones. I recomend this to anyone looking for a game that has action and makes you think too.

There are a few bugs in the game. Some loot can't be access. One bug I like is the ability to hyper jump to a friendly part of the map without actually traveling on the map. The gaming engine is great. Too bad the creator of the game didn't develop more other type of game play around this. They could have develop a Zombie game using the same engine. Other item of repair should have been included besides firearms. Some of the merc skill set doesn't make sense. If the character is an expert he or she should have the ability to perform the basic task.

Pile of Junk. Tried to be a successor to Jagged Alliance. Buyed it, because i loved the old ones. Honestly, get the old ones and mod 'em, theyre way better than this. Or go with some new stuff like the XCom Franchise.

cannot change keybindings and the interface is a bit clunky in the beginning, once you get used to it theres a really nice game underneath.
