This game has a lot of potential and is pretty good for a beat em up side scroller, but there is a fundamental flaw in the basic design of the game that makes it impossible for me to recommend. That is, this game supports only ONE save file and once you start a game, you cannot change the character or have anyone joining you unless you are willing to overwrite your existing game. Every time you start a new game, you have to start with the tutorial and you lose all previously acquired skills. Wish I had noticed this flaw earlier because I would have refunded.

Great new take on the classic go right and hit things genre with the ability to tag in other characters from the roster to continue the combo MVC style. No online modes but still great for solo experience. If you do manage to get a group of folks to play through Remote play or other apps the chaos for 4 players can be a hit or miss for some. Personally i wish there was a better way to keep track of your character when the screen is full of enemies, and also for it to be a bit harder with more players.

I saw this randomly in my discovery queue and it looked interesting. Not "I need to buy this now" interesting, but interesting. I then read the game info and saw it had a tag system, supers, alternate modes ... I bought it on a whim. Damn am I glad I did. I'm in my 40's and grew up on Saturday morning cartoons, Kung Fu movies, beat em up games.

Jitsu Squad hits all of these notes, but here's the thing; the gameplay and controls are GREAT. This isn't a quick nostalgia cash in, they clearly put a lot of love and effort into how this plays and pays off. The combat systems in this game get deeper and deeper as you unlock moves and it really feels like a blend of a tag fighter and a beat em up once you have everything.

There are some flaws I'd like to see addressed ... such as if you start a game in co-op but don't finish it with your teammate you can't continue solo, you have to start a new game. Also the game is short, my cousin and I have completed it twice in 3 hours, and doesn't have any alternate branching paths or anything.

I fully recommend this if you're into any of the things I've mentioned. I loved playing this, and will be replaying it more times with the other characters, experimenting with the secondary weapons, seeing what kind of crazy tag combos I can figure out, etc.

This is a beat-em-up with a twist. The devs of this game took great care when they made this to have that look of the old Saturday Morning Cartoon shows of the 90s mixed with the feel of something from the SNES and Genesis era of Beat-Em-Ups, and combines with a few modern-day enhancements.
It shines the most when utilizing the parry system. If you can learn how to use it correctly in each fight, you will find battles much easier and it could pose for an interesting challenge towards no-continue runs.
The game plays some fun on old references as well. I can't say what reference examples as it would just spoil it, but if you're looking for unexpected nostalgia, you can get it here.

There really isn't much else to say. Just enjoy the game!

I've only played for 30 minutes and gotten my money's worth, but lets be honest for a second: I'm furry trash. Furry trash that grew up on insane, quarter-gobbling arcade games like TMNT, Ninja Baseball, Wild-West C.O.W.Boys and Battletoads. This is the love letter to crazy cartoon brawlers we never knew we wanted.

Name a trope from those games, and it's here.
✅ Characters with unique fighting styles and personalities
✅ Dudes getting cut in half
✅ Elevator Battle
✅ Pop references that are just inside enough to feel earned
✅ DUDES GETTING CUT IN HALF

It's loaded with background gags, gorgeous art and tongue-in-cheek humor that will delight the eyes and excite the fingers. A little cheesy, a little dense, but I didn't complain as I stuck $20-bill after $20-bill into the token machine back at Pietro's Pizza in Seattle. What I'm going to say is that if you're Gen-X or just a rabid retro fan, get four controllers, buy this game, get some friends over for some pizza and go into this one together COLD! You will have a BLAST with your posse. It's that perfect combination of button mashing and swarms with just the right amount of technique to keep you invested. Plus the boss battle was insane. [★★☆]

A friend and I played through the entire game in one sitting, just because. The music is great, the art style makes me feel like I'm watching a Saturday morning cartoon, and the controls feel tight. My only complaints is that there is no online play but, that is why remote play exists and that the game feels a bit short. Good game though 8/10

Game isn't bad or anything, but it simply did not sit well with my siblings, since it was so chaotic with 4 players. 3/4 of the time I was confused as to where I was on the screen. The screen is too zoomed in and there isn't enough space since everything is mashed into a tiny little area with masses of enemies. It might work out for some people if you play with 2 players or less, but I don't recommend grabbing it if you're expecting a pleasing experience with 4 players. Regardless the game is pretty decent, so I'm giving it a positive.

Alright, don't hate me for this. I've been watching this game since it got funded and my initial play of it had me mixed. From the start, up until the middle of the second stage, I was floored. The game is clearly crafted with a lot of passion.
The art is silly and fun, the concepts are unique, and for fans of 2D fighting games and brawlers, the game play starts out immaculate. The references to other games and media really make you feel that this studio has a genuine love for the games that they take inspiration from, and the first half of this game blows that expectation wide open and makes for an extremely enjoyable and deep experience.
As the game continues, however, the cracks begin to show.
As far as intent goes, the intent of this game is to be a high octane brawler with a parry system similar(?) to Street Fighter 3rd Strike, and a special cancel system that borrows ideas from various other 2D fighters and brawlers. The depth that these bring is initially excellent. By the halfway point of the game, you will be chaining parries into combos with 3 or more special moves and the flow of the game really begins to hit a peak in tempo.
Then, after the
lava surfing stage and the subsequent fight with dash
, this game begins to betray some of its core ideas.
The art style, while extremely crafted and rich, begins to muddy the overall experience by ripping your visual clarity away. The pure amount of THINGS on the screen quickly takes a crisp overall combat system and begins overloading the player with information that takes that meticulous level of control away. And this is from the perspective of someone who hasn't yet played the chaos that must be 2-4 player co-op. By the time the final 2 bosses hit the scene, the game feels like it has quickly devolved into a guessing game where instead of studying well-patterned enemies, you are fighting the ability to see what is happening under all the chaos.
This is really brought to the forefront in the final boss.
The final boss fight with Origami was, in the nicest way possible, a big frustrating disappointment. Between the colossal amounts of enemies and hazards on the screen, to the inclusion of the wildly unnecessary INVINCIBLE appearance of Dash, what could have been a great culmination of the chaotic ride of the story is ground to a halt. What I can only imagine was a well-crafted final boss fight that was lacking some in difficulty was made infuriating. It feels as if the boss fight was finished, and a developer decided that to make it more difficult, they needed to continue throwing more and more things on the screen until the reasonable difficulty was turned into a screaming mess, where only guessing what could hit you in the visual mud, or using the same invincible move in a safer part of the screen was the only viable strategy. Origami's fight almost soiled this experience for me.
Other minor issues; stages advancing without your consent causing items on the ground to be lost, with little to no warning. Minor inconsistencies in enemy hitboxes and objects pushing each other around caused situations where parries that feel they should have hit to get you stuffed.
I'm writing this because I want to love this game more than titans like Streets of Rage 4. This studio has potential, as does this game. My honest opinion is, wait for a couple of patches.

EDIT 1: I have now found out that higher difficulties make the enemies harder to stun with regular attacks, further exacerbating the problem of 'way too many things happening at once and not many good answers to deal with them.' hoo boy. I really hope some changes come soon to this almost glorious game.

I backed this kickstarter, and boy am I glad I did. There is clearly so much love put into this game. It feels like part side scrolling beat 'em up and part fighting game, that perfectly blend together. Also, Maximillian Dood is in it and they got Crush 40 to make songs for it. Couldn't recommend this game more!

I must say that I am highly impressed. I have followed this game's development on twitter for quite a while and after spending over 130 hours on Streets of Rage 4 (even after they released DLC), I was left alone ASKING FOR MORE and today was the day that I have been blessed with something that will keep my Beat 'em Up thirst in check.

EDITED: I finished Story Mode on Easy and I can safely assure you: this game HITS ALL THE RIGHT SPOTS (for me at least).

So, what's so good about Jitsu Squad?

-The Art Style of this game is amazing. I really like how cartoony the environments and the characters are. This is further emphasized when you attack an enemy and/or get attacked by it as well as when you or the Bosses use Super Moves;

-Music and Sound design fit really well along with the Art Style and it's quite charming. It really shows the passion behind this game. This game also has voice acting when you do special moves as well as cutscenes and even though I could live without it, I must say that it's a welcome addition;

-Gameplay in this game: CHEF'S KISS! I love how smooth it feels to chain normal moves with special moves as well as switching between main weapon and secondary weapon attacks. You also have access to what I believe is an Omni Parry that, if timed correctly, can completely negate any enemy attacks and allow ur character to follow up with a counter attack. This parry is, off course, another fine addition to the game.

Now, there are places where Jitsu Squad falls short, however, I believe these can be fixed rather quickly since, none of them involve gameplay (if the game gets an update where they tackle the following issues, I will gladly remove them from this review).

Inability to change resolution and/or graphic settings: This one affected me a bit, since my specs can barely run the game at stable framerate but I believe that, with the addition of more graphic settings in the menu, me and other people with similar PC specs should be able to easily run this game on their lower end computers.

At the end of the day, Jitsu Squad is an amazing Beat 'em up made by equally amazing people and their passion really shows. Their hard work and dedication should be THE GOLD STANDARD in the entire game development industry.

I strongly recommend this game, 9/10
