I wanted to like this game but I just can't. The art is great with some stunning landscapes and visuals, the voice acting in a nordic language is awesome, the music is also very good and the story is enjoyable but the gameplay is what pulls it down.

8 of the 10 levels are completely devoid of enemies with the other two who have a grand total of 1 type of enemy each who each have only 1 attack. All the other levels rely on environmental hazards to challenge the player. So the majority of the time, you just wander around at a snail's pace, the running speed is so slow, dodging some stuff until you find the rune and leave. This would be fine if it was an exploration type game but the levels are super linear so there isn’t really much exploring to be had.

After every 2 of such boring levels, there is a boss fight which is where the combat comes into play. These bosses have great visual design and cool moves and are not the problem, the player controller is. You have a roll but it does not seem to have i-frames which makes it borderline useless. Instead you have to run around to avoid all the attacks and as I said earlier, the walking speed is too slow to make this enjoyable. This is made even worse by some bosses that mostly rely on ranged and AoE attacks who keep running away from you.

On top of these overarching problems, there are other smaller problems that add to the frustration.
- There was one lightning attack where the screen flashed completely white when I was hit which looked really cool and impactful but because of it I couldn’t see what was happening for a few seconds and died many times due to it. This would be such a problem if this boss had more than 2 attacks but he doesn’t so it happens a lot.
- There is a shield ability that makes you immune to damage for around 10 seconds but there is no visual indication when it runs out so I died numerous times due to it running out a fraction of a second before I got hit.
- The controller is not rebindable and having roll on A instead of B where I am used to it from soulslike games really threw me off. Yes I know I can rebind A and B using steam controller settings but that makes navigating menus a pain in the ass so it is not a proper solution.
- I also had weird framerate issues where the game would drop to as low as 35 fps while only using about 40% GPU and 15% CPU and would stay so low for minutes before recovering.

TLDR: Presentation is great but is held back by terrible movement, empty levels, and clunky combat.

Loved the design of this game, the Norse mythology setting was really interesting and the environmental design was brilliant. Most of all though the boss battles were really fun and this game has now made me a fan of bosses that are astronomically larger than your character in a fight.

First of all, game looks awesome, it has beautiful hand drawn visuals also has really good narration with Icelandic language and decent soundtrack.
Sadly, game suffers from boring repetitive fight mechanics, it's slow and clunky. You obtain some skills over time but there is nothing special about them.
I won't even finish the game thanks to that boring mechanic.

Rather short adventure/exploration game with a meh story. Boss battles are pretty okay, but combat is poorly done. You can't speed up attacks, nor can you cancel attacks. This makes combat clunky overall, and leaves a bad taste in the player's mouth. The idea is good, but the combat falls short. The music is exceptional, but it's one of the only redeeming qualities, along with the art style of the game. The game is challenging, and it's fun if you like the combat style. If you prefer reacting to something rather than memorizing attack patterns though, I'd say it's not for you.

This is a very tentative recommendation. On the whole I enjoyed the game and looked forward to playing it. However, it has some issues.

First, there are some actual Viking sagas less obtuse than this game. If you want a hit about what god powers are, what controls are, or what is going on, you'll have to consult a Steam guild, because this game doesn't want to tell you.

Second, Thora is slow. Sometimes this is a good game choice, such as in boss fights-it's all about perfect timing and struggling against impossible odds. Other times it's just annoying, like when you want her to haul ass across a level but she'd rather amble her way through dwarf town. Thora, maybe you died a dishonourable death because you're the slowest viking in Scandinavia.

Third, the fire giant has an annoying move where he pushes you into oncoming fireballs that is not telegraphed.

Fourth, it can sometimes be hard to tell where you are when you're behind something. You see a shadow outline of Thora, but you can't always judge if you're right up against the giant you're fighting or if you're actually several feet away from her. The reverse happens too.

Fifth, the maps are hit or miss. Some look neat and some can't really be read.

I still think this is a good game and that you should play it. The art is excellent, the sound and voice acting give the game an ancient and epic feel, the boss fights feel massive and consequential. One of the most interesting things about his game is which giants people say are the toughest. But it's also true that this game has a bunch of problems that you might not be able to get past.

While the art is gorgeous, and the concept is very appealing, there are a few reasons that I can't recommend this game.

The first is the movement. Much of the moment- to moment gameplay is spent... well, moving. My issue is that the character moves incredibly slowly. I understand that not all characters need to zip across a map, but when there's not much atmosphere or challenge to be had in a given area, I'm going to be more eager to skip through, which the base walking speed seems to hinder.

Issue 1.5 with the game (connected to walking speed) is the dodge-rolling. I genuinely can't think of a game off the top of my head with such an unsatisfying roll. In my short time with this game, rolling instead of walking from place to place (if that's your jam, like it is mine) is actually *somehow worse than walking.*

Issue 2: the dodge-roll (I promise this will make sense). With such a slow movement speed, one might think that more mechanical depth can be offered in combat, (especially boss fights), at least as far as movement goes. Responsiveness, speed, perhaps the addition of i-frames, these all require balancing to keep fights engaging to players. Sadly, it seems as though the devs put all relevant engagement sliders to zero.
Rolls don't have i-frames, or at least not enough to reliably use.
Inputs feel sluggish anyway, so maybe the lack of i-frames is a mercy.
While rolls are significantly faster than base walking, you're forced to a stop when you come out of it, so it's only good for traveling the distance of the roll or less.

Issue 3: Slow combat. Base attacks follow either a slow one-two combo that has slightly too specific timing (in my opinion) or a charged attack that takes a few beats too long, and will probably end up being the only move you use, at least at the beginning. The problem, when compounded with slow movement and bad dodging, is that when the controls are too simple, boss attacks have to be balanced to the limitations of the character. So far, the bosses have been fair, but having simple movesets, inflated health bars, and lackluster phases are just symptoms of the player's limited options.

Also the environments are generally boring, save for a few beautiful setpieces. Very samey.

While this game features a lot of cool artwork and storytelling, the character moves SO SLOW and attacks incredibly slowly, and it feels really just clunky during boss battles. Most of these 5 hours I've spent playing have been just wandering around the maps, trying to find out 1) where I am, and then 2) where my destinations are. The map UI doesn't even tell you where you are, so you have to keep track either exceedingly carefully, or just be okay with going with the flow. I get trying to emphasize the difference in size between the character and the enemy, but it just feels so absurd to have to spend at least 75% of the boss fights trying to navigate to the correct spot to get your attacks to even register the hitboxes.

Combat is slow, exploration is slow, your dodge is just a roll with no I frames, and screen shake while trying to doge or block things is just BAD. That said it is short, and kinda meh but meh is not an answer so yes it is...

I like the style and concept of the game a lot but the combat and roll mechanic is TERRIBLE! Heavy attacks have a pre-determined and set charge time, you cannot abandon the attack if, for example, in the final boss fight you see an attack coming, even if you want to cancel the attack you cannot you are stuck in the animation. For me this is a BIG pet peeve because it takes away from reacting to the game and requires memorizing patterns and timed sequences. I have yet to finish the final boss but I may come back after I repair the damage to the walls and desk I caused while raging because of this game.
The biggest deal breaker for me is the set charge time on the power attack because this game directs players to use that attack but it is a dangerous gambit to use the attack. And when the game is essentially 5 big boss fights the combat should be on point.

Short and simple hack and slash with an interesting story. There is a good bit to explore and the boss battles are great fun. The theme is awesome between the trippy art style and the epic back ground music really tying it together. It's short but challenging and well worth a play through!

Spoiler-Free review

TLDR
An indie game about Norse Mythology, with beautiful graphics but basic gameplay.

Gameplay
Jotun is a top down game where you walk around the map, fight bosses, discover new abilities and solve puzzles. You do this with 6 buttons. Dash, light attack, heavy attack, two buttons to switch your magical skill, and a button to active said skill.

Story
The description of the game says it best, but described in my words:
You are a viking who has to prove herself to the gods to enter Valhalla. It isn't easy. The gods will test you, sending fearful beasts to test your might.

Graphics
For a company I never heard of before, the graphics it offers is just amazing. I absolutely adore this style, while it might not be 10/10, especially when it comes to areas, 90% of the game is portrayed beatifully. Performance wise, I think just about any computer that can also run 1080p youtube videos can play this without any struggle at 60 fps.

Sound
From the short while I played, I love the music, the soundscape. It truly fits the game.

My opinion
While this game has beautiful graphics, great sound, smooth framerates and an interesting premise, it's the gameplay which stops the game from ascending. It's slow, going from A to B doesn't have much to offer you, remember that axe I told about? So far I've only seen it used to stop static hazards, bosses and puzzles. There are no enemies in the world. (Might be different later on in the game, but this made me stop playing early.)

Conclusion
Great premise, great graphics, great sound, all is great except the one thing that matters. Gameplay.
And so I believe this game deserves a 5. It definitely tries to be something beautiful, but it feels like that's where it ends. It tries, but sadly fails due to the gameplay.

Here's what I thought the problem with the game was in a nut shell
the stuff outside of boss fights was just filler crap (basically meant to just pad out game time)
and the bossfights themselves were terrible because your movement was terrible because for every animation it makes your character pause which is aggravating so at no point gameplay wise are you enjoying the actual gameplay

Hand drawn art style looks cool, though environments are somewhat bland in the early stage I saw. Difficulty ramps up quite fast on boss battles, not helped by janky and slow to react controls. Unless I missed it, there was no tutorial so I did quite a bit of standing on stone plinths making things appear or replenishing things with no real idea of what was really going on. I'm sure with patience there is an interesting game here for someone, but for me, it wasn't clear, it wasn't fun and i'm moving on.

Got it for free during some offer, can't remember when or why. Not a bad game, kinda like a 2.5/5 game. But Steam has only Positive or Negative, so there's that.
Firstly, let's get the Good stuff outta the way.

#The Good
1. Graphics :
Excellent artwork. The graphics looks gorgeous.
2. Sound :
The ambience is great, the sound tracks, especially the bosstracks are epic, which leads me to
3. Boss Fights :
This game focuses a lot on the boss fights, and boy they are great. Each and every boss fight is epic and provides a challenging but fair battle.

#The Bad

Now, Steam says it took me 4 hours to beat the game. A relatively short game. Not bad, if the 4 hours are quality material. The problem is, the fun part is like 30 mins, the rest is padding.

1. General gameplay:
You roam and explore with a character that moves as slow as the physics of this game will allow. Now, while it's great buring boss fights, lending a sense of tactical positioning and a focus on optimal movement to get as much hits off as possible, while exploring, it makes you want to uninstall.

2. Powers:
Not the powers themselves in general, they are okay, generic but they work and I ain't complaining.
How you get them though, is the problem. I almost finished the game while missing 2 spells. Like, the spells are flashy and cool, why would you take a fun part of a game and bury it deep inside among the filler shit tier puzzles and exploring parts? Most people won't give a rat's ass about exploring when the character moves slower than a paralysed sea slug.
I ain't saying make the Apples easy to find, those are like a bonus. Make the SPELLS, which are a crucial part of the game, be given maybe along with the runes or like really obvious to find.

Tell you what, double the pay of the graphic artist and the guy who did the bosses, and fire the dude who thought hiding the spells would be great game design

The art is beautiful and very creative in the art direction, the bosses feel terrifying especially with the audio and animation alone. You can see they put a lot of work into the game, but I can't recommend it.

The game wants you to be very skilled and intimate with timing and controls, but doesn't give you anything to train against and earn it. So you feel stuck in the zero grey area of something very difficult that requires you to practice on the boss, or just roaming around, which is a shame because you can get some good atmosphere and feel immersed on it.

Still, more than once, I felt like I went to the boss too soon and just had missed something, and it suddenly felt like a chore.

If you check videos on youtube and you feel like this is for you, by all means go buy it, maybe it was just not my cup of tea. However if you are expecting an adventure where you feel like your skills grow with the character as you go fight gods and titans, you'll find it lacking.

Combat is downright slow and bad.

The game play is kind of obnoxious in my opinion. Very first level is try to dodge the poo clouds, and if you get hit touch the blue flowers or take periodic damage. I don't think the game is as much about game play as it is about story/mythology. Admittedly, I got to the first boss, died a few times, a few attacks didn't hit when I thought they should have, and I just got frustrated and quit. It's not fun.

The game is beautiful, the voice acting is very interesting, i like it a lot. But this is game, and the game play is just not fun.

Rating: ★★☆☆☆

(Great setting but boring gameplay)

============

Review:

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is difficult to categorize for me. I don't even really know what the genre is - sort of mix of puzzle, adventure and light rpg.

The art style of the game is good, but it can be confusing at times. The terrain and obstacles blend together and sometimes it was hard for me to see which areas were passable and which were not.

The music fits the theme nicely and the sounds do their job.

============

The most interesting part of the game (for me) is the Norse mythology setting.

Unfortunately the rest of the game is just not that good. Clunky controls, slow movement, tiny dodge ranges etc. Kills quite a bit of enjoyment for me.

It was really annoying that your character isn't shown on the map. Gameplay in general was simply boring for me.

The game is pretty short, and I like that. I wouldn't want to play this game much longer anyway.

============

Overall, I think Jotun is a mediocre game. It's not bad, and can be a nice dip into norse mythology if you're interested in that.

But it's just not very fun to play. It is somewhat challenging (at least it forces you to learn patterns of the bosses), and some bosses might take a couple of tries to beat.

I got the game for free a couple of years ago, and now I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it.

Honestly I wouldn't pay for this game, but if you're really interested in it, get it on sale.

============

Summary:

The Good ????
+ Norse mythology setting
+ Short
+ Art style is good...

The Bad ????
- ...But sometimes it gets confusing
- Boring gameplay
- Poor map system

Jotun is above all else mediocre. There is nothing that it does that another doesn't do better and the sum of the parts isn't, unfortunately, greater than the whole.
Jotun is divided in two parts, exploration and boss fights. The former is barebones and often a chore due to the slow moving speed of the player with the occasional exposition on norse mythology followed by competent back drops and scenarios, The latter is frankly disappointing with five of the six bosses being way to easy and all of then being extremely boring to fight, especially odin (who thought that the all-father should fight by fleeing from you and throwing gungnir around should have an intervention).
The main problem with Jotun bosses are with the character movement, way to slow and limited (you can't even chain roll for christ sake) with a few powers added in that feel more like a gimmick than anything else. Having said all that, I still hope that they make another game that greatly improves on what is here. They need to work on the exploration or get rid of it, up the character movement speed and tune their bosses or at least these would be good points to start.
Almost Forgot to say that the story is meh and the soundtrack is ok and this is all that there is to say about them.

Valhalla can wait.

You don't need long in this walking simulator to understand this game is boring. Hence why I'm departing after a relatively short playtime.

Combat is terrible. You move slow, your main strike is slow, your beast-mode strike is super slow. The god power strike is ineffectual.

Having Icelandic voice actors read to me is not enough of a draw card.

Jotun's visual design is amazing, but it's gameplay is sorely lacking. The only thing to do here is fight 6 bosses, which aren't even that fun to do in and of themselves. The story is barely there, and the game feels incredibly empty with nothing to do in the large pretty maps it presents. Even the combat feels very sub-par and frustrating, which only makes the bosses feel like even more of a chore.

Honestly, all there is to this game is to fight frustrating bosses and walk around big empty maps. Cool visuals alone do not make up for that. After experiencing the second boss, I already couldn't help but wonder; 'is this going to be the entire game'? Needless to say, I had to uninstall it. Sorry Jotun, but you're just not that impressive.

If the game wasn't as difficult as it is, I probably wouldn't like it as much as I do, but at the same time it is incredibly frustrating to replay a boss fight over, and over, and over again, and that's pretty much all this game is: boss fights.

Story

You play as a Thora, a viking who must prove to the gods that she deserves a place in Valhalla.
Throughout the realms you learn more about Norse mythology, such as its creation myth and what each god represents.
As you beat the gods, you learn more about Thora's life before her death and her place in her clan.

Gameplay

Before you fight each god you have to find their runes. Jera only has one, all the other gods have two.
Each map has a rune, a golden apple tree, a god statue, a healing fountain, and a couple of vistas. Only a couple of maps have any actual enemies on it, and they all die in one hit.
After you have the runes specific to a god you can fight them.
Each god has its own pattern of attacks and abilities, but they also have some heavy RNG (especially the last one!) so watch out.

You aren't given much to fight with. You have:
• Your axe, with a normal attack and a heavy attack. Both are very slow, including their recovery time.
• A dodge roll, but BE CAREFUL, it's recovery time is very slow as well, BUT it can be used to interrupt attack recovery.
• God Powers, you only have these if you visit the god statues on each map and their uses are limited. They're essential for Perfect runs and Time Trials.

Explore, find runes, fight boss, repeat.

Graphics

Jotun is an extremely good looking game. Everything is meticulously hand-drawn and just well done.
All of the maps are unique from each other and very vast.
Thora and all of the Jotun are very well designed and the animations—although rustic feeling—are great.

Sound

The soundtrack is very fitting and epic when it needs to be. All of the levels and bosses have different music and it fits.
The Icelandic voice overs are wonderful, they really help with the immersion and they sound like native speakers.
Sound effects are very minimal, mostly just footsteps and attacks, but all of them are timed well and sound nice.

Overall

I have very, very few complaints about Jotun.

1. The overview map: it doesn't show where you are on it, so you have to figure out your position based on landmarks which can get confusing, especially when the map isn't oriented in the same direction the level is.

2. How slowly you move. With how expansive the exploration maps are you move at a snail's pace. It isn't so bad in the boss fights (it feels slow, but you get used to it) but the exploration is annoyingly slow.

3. Skill selection. I play with controller, so I don't know if it's any better with keyboard and mouse, but whenever you need to select a new power you have to cycle through them. You can go previous or next, sure, but that isn't helpful when you're three powers away in either direction and need a specific power immediately (like the shield). There have been A LOT of times where I just haven't gotten to the skill in time and have to restart the whole boss fight.

Otherwise this is a great game. I still have to get the Valhalla achievements (which will suck, I'm sure) but if you enjoy difficult games you should definitely pick this up.
Buy it on sale if you don't plan on 100%ing it, but it will give you your money's worth for full price if you plan on completing it.

Beautiful art and controls great with a controller, I can see some issues with keyboard/mouse.
I'd recommend picking up the game on sale, as I took my time to explore, get the upgrades, and still beat the game in under 5 hours. $17.50CAD is a bit steep for that.

So the game looks amazing, the soundtrack is great, the controls are good, and the visuals are gorgeous.
The problem is that most of the time i was playing this game, i had no idea what the feth i was supposed to be doing, the game doesn't do much of a good job when telling you where to go and what to do, not only that but it also teleports you around stages randomly, the first time i played this i got to a tree boss. I couldn't beat it on that evening so i closed the game to try again some other time. But the next time i opened up the game and loaded my save-file, i was in some cosmic-looking area, where i had four sides to go to open a big door, which led me to an even harder lighting boss.
So yeah, if you think you can handle this ammount of not knowing where to go, the game's all yours. But still i can't recommend it.

Took me a little while to get into the game, stopped after 30 minutes the first time I played.

Mostly kept playing the second time for the fantastic art, and the gameplay gets more diverse after a while when you obtain new powers from the gods.

Awesome visuals, great soundtrack, and the nordic mythology atmosphere is appreciated.

Information / Review English

Jotun: Valhalla Edition is an action adventure developed by Thunder Lotus Games.

Gameplay / Story

What kind of genre is Jotun? If you first dive into the hard facts, Jotun is a two-dimensional action adventure, the game world of which was clearly inspired by Nordic mythology. Our protagonist is called Thora, a red-haired and ax-wielding Viking who died an inglorious death on the high seas before our adventure began. In the Nordic Limbo, she now receives a chance from the gods - if she impresses the gods, she is still granted access to Valhalla. To achieve this, she has to defeat the six eponymous Jotun, who turn out to be boss opponents of truly epic proportions. Before she can face the respective colossi, various extensive landscapes have to be scoured in search of runes to be activated. The gameplay is basically divided into two basic aspects: Exploring large areas and fighting even bigger bosses.

While you roam through the very different sub-levels, for example frosty ice deserts, trees inhabited by huge birds or boiling lava landscapes, you rarely have to swing your ax. Here, the focus is on exploration, in some places puzzles also have to be solved, but these are often shallow. In the pause menu, the undefined map does not help us much when exploring, but this is also intentional, since it is the player's task to orientate himself in the landscapes using a few clues. How extensively the areas are explored is partly up to the player. Certain runes must definitely be activated in order to gain access to the final bosses, but beyond that, how fully you scout the levels is optional. But diligence is worth it, as various power-ups and magical powers can be found that are of elementary importance for the fights.

The spells received from the gods let you, for example, fill up your own energy bar, swing a powerful hammer or activate protective shields. The spells can be selected using the shoulder buttons and activated by pressing the A button. In addition, using Thora remains quite simple. You move your heroine either with the analog stick or the control pad and you can use the Y button to deliver quick ax blows and the X button more powerful but rechargeable blows. In addition, in the style of the Zelda games, you can use the B button to perform a forward roll, which turns out to be a vital action in every fight.

Pro

+ nicely integrated short stories of Norwegian mythology
+ fascinatingly surreal limbo wasteland
+ pleasantly crisp, well choreographed boss fights
+ atmospheric, calm to pompous soundtrack
+ Achievements and trading cards

Contra

- minimalist story about failed Viking woman
- Puzzles have no depth
- monotonous and too easy fights against masses of small warriors

Conclusion

Jotun: Valhalla Edition offers you a solid action adventure, with battles and puzzles often remaining too simple and monotonous. I would wait for a sale to buy the game.

Information / Review Deutsch

Jotun: Valhalla Edition ist ein Action-Abenteuer, welches von Thunder Lotus Games entwickelt wurde.

Gameplay / Geschichte

Voice acting and story were pretty good. However, the movement is lateral, the attacks are boring and basic, and the special abilities are only used for bosses. Let's just say I couldn't wait to finish this 14 hour story so I can never play it again. And the last boss... don't even get me started on those homing spears, only difficult part of the game was dodging those things.

Im conflicted about this game. The art is amazing and the narration is cool. The boss battles and abilities you get from them are fun. In order to get to the bosses ohhhh boy.
Before each boss is a big area to explore full of NOTHING. The areas before the bosses are so boring and annoying to go through. In a few levels are hazards like the poisonous flowers which arnt fun to traverse and only slow things down. Only two levels have actual enemies and they pose ZERO threat at all. They are so easy to kill and do almost no damage to you. In a few of the levels are puzzles but they are less of a puzzle and more of an unfun annoyance.
If you removed the before boss levels this game would be ten times better I think. It feels like they were just thrown in to pad the game. It just makes it so much of a slog to get through. Just why? They dont add anything and there is nothing in them unless you wanna treat it like a sightseeing tour.

This game is good. Even though I got it for free I would definitely buy it with my own money.
I like norse mythology and this game provides me with another chance to learn about it once again (my memory is bad).

Gameplay is simple and works very well. I did not run into any problems. Levels and characters are drawn very nicely.
There are secrets to discover. And if you do the game will become easier so do explore and you'll be rewarded with both nice scenery and upgrades.
Boss fights were very interesting and I had to think how to approach the each one.
More meaningful achievements are the only thing that would make my experience even better. I'm a bit of an achievement junkie but I don't want to spend hours trying to figure out how to kill a boss in 25 seconds or how to kill all bosses without taking any damage.
Even though it took me 7 hours to complete it I think it's a good game and it's worth the price.

It's a boss rush, but the bosses are walled off behind some rune-hunting. The hand-drawn art is great and the boss fights are challenging, but the exploration left me something to be desired. Movement is fairly slow and most of the worlds are more or less empty aside from a few scattered puzzles. Although the worlds were beautiful, it would have been great to be able to move a little faster to explore or just make the areas smaller so it's not quite so tedious.

The Gods are impressed! Don't let the character's slow movement keep you from experiencing this game. The whole idea is to make you feel small in comparison to, simply put, a God. And with our heroine only moving so fast, you are forced to slow down and think - a 'hack & slash' this is not.

The decision to go with the hand-drawn illustrative design was top notch. You don't see too much of this these days, and it gave a bit more life to the bosses IMO. If you really nerd out over good art, as of this review, they are giving away their digital art book for free by simply signing up for the newsletter. Who doesn't like free?

Starter

When I want to drop a review on steam for a game, the main question I ask to myself is what aspect of this game is good enough to recommend the game because of that. If I know there’s nothing, I just simply don’t recommend the game.

Sometimes there are games which have mediocre or even bad visuals or stories but because they have some unique gameplay elements, I say it’s worth to buy and try them, so I recommend them. Or there are some other games which don’t have anything outstanding in their gameplay, but on the other hand they have charming aesthetics and graceful atmosphere, so again I say let’s play them because of the good things.

So with that said, I’m going to go a little deep with this review, because I think developers of Jotun deserve it. Bear with me.

Jotun and its Rivals

The problem with Jotun is, in each and every aspect of this game, there’s a rival (another game I mean) which does better than Jotun in that specific aspect. Let’s put it on explanation:

1. First of all, let’s discuss the gameplay. So I see many elements in Jotun’s gameplay borrowed from the beloved Shadow of the Colossus. Just like SOTC, here in Jotun player navigates through the environment and levels in order to find the next colossus (god in Jotun), fight him, and kill him, to dig through the new content. There are no little enemies in between the boss battle sections, it’s just player path finding through levels to find the next god to kill. In SOTC, this whole concept was fun. Colossuses in SOTC were fun to engage with. They were somewhat challenging I do remember, but the battles themselves were more some puzzles to solve than some challenging combat like many Souls-Like games. The design focus in SOTC was on something else during boss battles. SOTC designer was careful not to exploit the combat difficulty, for two reasons: one that SOTC did not have deep and complex combat mechanics, it just had some ordinary attack move, without any complexity and a couple of navigational mechanics like run and jump. And the designer was well aware of it not to exploit boss fights simply because combat wasn’t supporting it. The second reason was players were going to actually feel for colossuses and think about the morality of taking them out. And player could actually feel their pain when killing those somewhat innocent souls. So again, designer was aware of it and played all along that intention. Wrapping up this section, there’s SOTC, actually from 15 years ago which deals with the gameplay aspect in a much more respective way than Jotun. So why I just don’t go replay the SOTG again? Or if you don’t have that game, why you don’t put or money on that game?

2. The next I want to discuss is visuals. There are a lot of reviews praising the visuals of Jotun, and I’m confused to be honest. There is some far more beautiful hand-drawn games out there which does this better than Jotun. Backgrounds lack details. There are some beautiful vistas in levels, but they are just a few of them. Character doesn’t represent anything special, nothing about it I mean, not animation wise or not concept wise. Gods lack details as well. Just like the main character. There are no special 2D hand-painted particle effects in the game. Everything just fall flat. There are some other games which have masterpiece level of hand-painted visuals. Take a look at Rayman Legends or the beloved Ori and the Blind Forrest. I can name a half dozen of masterfully crafted 2D hand-painted games which do the job far better than Jotun which you can invest your precious time and money on them instead.

3. Norse Mythology. Yes, that’s a unique selling point for Jotun. I’m not a big fan of Norse Mythology myself, but I always can appreciate a good game set in Vikings Realm. I liked the Hell Blade (I played this one a little), I liked God of War 2016, somewhat loved The Banner Saga, Liked the Ancestors Legacy and yeah. I mean those games catch the Norse Mythology on the perfect spot. But Jotun can’t. The Norse Mythology is just limited to some monologue lines and some gods’ names mentioned in them, I mean literally. There’s no serious visual clues in the game. Nothing special in terms of environmental story telling.

4. Sound and music. OST in Jotun with all respect has nothing to offer. I don’t see any identity related to Vikings. Let me tell you something, I have a playlist on YouTube dedicated to Vikings music and Old Norse songs. In that playlist, you can find a couple of battle songs from the game Ancestors Legacy which I don’t know how many times I have listened to them. You can feel the identity in them.

5. The overall mood and atmosphere. You know this is a little tricky. Everyone can have their opinion about this one. I just say I don’t feel the vibe with this one. Falls flat so hard IMO.
My argument on these 5 points which I just mentioned is, there are some games which do the job better than Jotun, and they worth your money and time. The only thing which can cause me to change my opinion about Juton, is its atmosphere. Although I think there’s NOTHING special about it, but if it clicks for you, then maybe go for it, at sales of course.

Other Major Issues

There are also some major issues in Jotun which I’m going to list them here fast, take a look:
  • Combat System is boring and challenges player is faced with is because of lack of proper control over the character, not the combat challenge itself.
  • There’s a dodge/roll mechanic in the game. Apparently this mechanic has no Iframes and it has a considerable cool-down animation which makes it useless.
  • Pacing has real issues. There’s lack of activity between combat sections which makes you yawn. Devs tried to fill this emptiness with story, monologues, visuals, etc. but it just doesn’t work.
  • Level are unnecessarily big. Devs haven’t used this space. And as I said before, they are filled with emptiness.
  • There’s a useless map in the game, which doesn’t serve its purpose. It doesn’t tell player where he is. And also sometime, it’s just misleading, because it’s not synced properly with the geometry of levels.
  • Levels don’t have enough landmarks. This point combined with two previous points, make player gets lost in levels, which sucks.

Conclusion

There’s a different story about Thunder Lotus’s other game Sundered. I would recommend Sundered. Take a look at its store page some time.

Hello,

I have decided to refund this game after 1.5 hours of gameplay (where I already had fought 3 out of the 5 bosses [Jera, Fe, and Hagalaz] of this game). This implies I was more then half way through with such a short game time, and I found the game simply not fun or worth even the 75% discount sale price I purchased it for.

Pros:
-----
-> Art is generally nice and uniquely drawn.
-> There are boss fights (which I like the idea of).
-> You can explore to find some extra damage or health bonuses.
-> There is some freedom in the order of which you fight the bosses.

Cons:
------
-> Unclear direction and story.
-> Bad maps, that don't let you know where you are on them.
-> No way to know exactly what the abilities or items you unlock do.
-> All the non boss activities are either boring but time consuming or confusing because of map design and time consuming.
-> At some points the quirky and unique drawings (which are nice but not amazing) suddenly become garbage doodles.
-> It's hard to renew your health or ability uses without dying.
-> Poor/unclear hitboxes on enemy attacks or enemies themselves.
-> Bosses are either a joke, or have very high artificial difficulty.

tl;dr
----
The game lacks depth, consistency, explanation, and enjoyability. Would not recommend.

The game is very, very, *very* unbalanced.

The levels themselves are generally easy, and some of the Bosses are also pretty easy. I'd say most of the game is a cakewalk (though a pleasant one, because the atmosphere is nice: good environments and designs and voice acting). But then, some of the Bosses suddenly *massively* raise the difficulty level. As soon as you defeat them, it's back to easy.

It's like, on the 1-10 difficulty scale, you play some levels as 4, fight a Boss as 4, keep going as 4, fight a Boss as 15, play more levels as 4, etc etc. As a result, if you want a lighthearted game, you'll be *immensely* frustrated by those couple of Bosses, whereas if you want a hardcore game you'll be bored for most of it.

On top of that, the difficulty is almost entirely caused by the fact that the playable character is slooooooooooow, while those Bosses can cross the entire screen in two seconds. So you have to craaaaaaaaaaaaawl after them, reach them, hit them a couple of times, they move half a screen away, and you craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawl after them again. Wash rinse repeat. The entire combat system would *immensely* benefit from a patch to make the playable character a little faster.

LOL graphics are good 10/10
But the gameplay is lacking.

The story is also confusing and there is no proper flow of story like you can go to whatever place you want to go. not suitable for this ECQ. next!

It's curious how Jotun manages to simultaneously revere the souce material and mutilate it.

The feeling of the myth here is wonderfully conveyed: you are a small speck compared to everything around you: Jotunheim is huge, its inhabitants are huge. If you're familiar with Nose mythology, you'll see many familiar details: Ratatosk crawling up and down Yggdrassil, Yormungandr gnawing on its roots, Odin's ravens, Hugin and Munin, Loki's statue's mouth being sewed tight etc.

At the same time, the set-up - a woman-warrior who would be allowed to enter Valhalla only if she defeated a few Jotun is ridiculous.
Firstly, professional female-warriors were not usually a thing in Early Middle Age Scandinavia - they were extremely emancipated and frequently knew how to wield a sword, but not to that degree. To the game's credit, it elaborates on our protagonistess particular case.
Secondly, if every warrior got to destroy a few Jotunn when dying an inglorious death, Jotunheim would be pretty underpopulated by now, don't you think? But then again, the game explains why such a chance is given to Thora - it's just that this explanation comes too late in the game.

Icelandic voice-over contributes a lot to the atmosphere - it's an amazing aesthetic choice.
Which cannot be said for Disneyorderline-anime visual style of the game - it really detracts from the Norse feel.

Gameplay-wise, Jotun keeps the tight balance between exploration and combat. There are mapswhere you will find no enemies, but it won't bother you at all - you will be too busy with environmental hazards. I wish more games did this! Constant fighting is not always the best thing for a game - especially if it tries to maintain immersion. But when a fight breaks out - oh boy, does it break out! The Jotun will give you a proper thrashing - until you return the favor!

However... That last boss. Oh, the kingdom of random! Oh, the gigantic spermatozoons! Oh, the summoning! It is ridiculously much harder than the rest of the bosses.

Anyway, try this. It's good. Thunder Lotus next game, Sundered, is pretty good too.

Beautiful music, voice acting and art style that are sadly accompanied by a boring game. The combat is simple (fast attack, strong attack and dodge) and unprecise. Each level is huge and empty (but good looking) with one gimmick to annoy and slow you before you can finish it. The only interesting part are the boss fights but you have to get through the boring levels first (and usually that's 2 levels for 1 boss). And even then they usually have 2-3 attacks and as soon as you know them, they are quite easy to beat and are only busy work. There are some difficult achievements regarding the boss fights (0 hit run, X seconds to kill, etc.) but with the simple and unresponsive combat system, I feel no motivation to even try them.

I could not even finish the game because the levels got so boring. Had they fleshed out the combat system a little bit more, this could have been a nice game. But like this, I sadly cannot recommend it.

This game is a ton of fun if you like games where you aren't a badass. Most of the bosses are interesting, the game is short and sweet at only four hours for me to make a first run through, and it tells an ok story along side it all.

8/10

Frankly, kind of disappointing. The level design is repetitive and ... random, in my opinion. Stretches of map pieced together with enemies sprinkled throughout - so it's mostly a chore. I don't think they were created procedurally but they feel that way. I think the Tumblr art-style is what they sold this game on, and just like it, the game itself feels like mostly a gimmick with shaky structure and not very much thought underneath.

It has a lot of norse mythology well explained and pretty interesting. It also has a lot of different skills you can get along the journey and different ways to approach the bosses. Easy to play through but hard if you want to get the achievements. Really recommended.

It's pretty. The story is ok.

It's however very shallow and it's mostly a walking simulator in between patterned boss fights.
I'd say about 90% of the time you'll be moving in large maps that are a bit maze like with maybe 1 mechanic you need to avoid, searching for a few secrets.

The bosses are more annoying than fun. Watch a youtube playthrough. You'll get about as much out of it as buying it.

It's... just not worth it. Maybe get it at 75% off?

The joy of this game is sadly only on the surface. It is visually beautiful, but gameplay is severely lacking. Some levels are huge, but there's nearly nothing to discover. It's basically only: Enter the world, dodge the one enemy type in the world, find a rune. After you found one or two runes, you get to fight a boss. And here the game gets really annoying, because the slow attack animations, the stuttering dash move and the annoying hit boxes make combat tedious. You feel as if you're not really in control.

I am really torn about Jotun. It is very heavily inspired by shadow of the colossus, the art style is great and I often found myself admiring the scenery. The music fits well with the theme of the game and certainly adds to the atmosphere as you play through. It is not without its flaws though. The controls are clunky and the animations/response of button presses isn't very fluid. They have sacrificed a lot to make things look good. I feel like 90% of the effort went here and when your game is predominantly all puzzles/exploration and boss battles you at the very least want tight controls

While I enjoy learning through game play, it has to be fun. Exploration and other elements of the game are simply not explained. While I don't mind experimenting a better game would have a feasible in game explanation or provided clues to the player on how to proceed. Jotun does non of these things well. This game shows a lot of potential and is a graphical delight but as a playable game it lacks. Especially compared to its inspiration and similar games like Furi. I really wanted to like this game but often found myself frustrated playing it. With so many other great games available for me to play and a limited amount of time to play them I want to be engaged and interested straight away and for all its lovely hand drawn art Jotun never quite managed to get me there.

Boring and ridiculously challenging. Some maps are worth speeding through instead of wasting time battling villains. You might as well restart the match if you get a single hit from some bosses. Maps are difficult to use, given that your location is not listed on them, which forces you to overlap locations just to figure out where you are. Beautiful art though.

The Review

Jotun was a surprisingly fun time. I love how the game has beautifully drawn sprites. No lazy 8bit bullshit here. This is a game based on Norse mythology where you play as Thora trying to make it to Valhalla. The game is top down action game where you have to face and defeat some Jotunn. The gameplay is very simple, you can attack and roll but after you beat a Jotunn you get some combat spells. The story is also simple with most of the backstory being told to you as you beat the bosses. The music is very nice and fits the theme. All in all this is a nice game but I just wish that their was a blocking and running option.
