Über das Spiel

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars is an innovative narrative driven adventure game which is being developed due to overwhelming support from a successful crowdfunding campaign.

The story centers on Rachel Manners, a 35 year old astrobiologist. She is a member of an elite group of scientists, chosen to embark on one of the most critical missions ever conceived on Earth. Now Rachel is alone, orbiting an unknown planet. Her only companions are J.U.L.I.A., the space probe’s artificial intelligence and Mobot, a huge reconnaissance robot. Together, this unlikely trio will explore the mysteries of this solar system. But are they prepared for what they will find?

Story
After countless years of careful space observation, the enormous telescope Chandra 17 suddenly locates a solar system quite similar to our own. As all earthly observatories turned their attention towards this new discovery, a signal of artificial origin is detected from deep within the system.

Reaction was immediate and a mission plan was conceived. No expense was spared in the construction of a massive space probe. It was designed and equipped to be ideally suited for the ultimate challenge: to meet and study extraterrestrial sentient life-forms. Equal care was taken with the crew. Only the most prominent scientists were selected and trained to ideally represent planet Earth. Everything was perfectly planned and success was certain. Yet somehow, everything has gone terribly wrong…

Now, imagine being jolted awake by an emergency alarm. As your surroundings come into focus, you realize you were deep in cryogenic sleep on a vast space probe. But why you are there is an elusive memory. Disoriented, you rush to the control room searching for answers. Once there you learn from the ship’s AI that not only have you been asleep for decades, but you are also the last surviving member of the probe’s crew.

To make matters worse, the probe is severely damaged by a disastrous impact with a passing meteoroid swarm. First, you must make repairs. Not only is your own survival at stake, but you need to find out what happened to the crew and why you alone survived.

Are You Prepared to
  • step into the spacesuit of Rachel Manners and find out why she was the sole survivor of this ill-fated expedition?
  • utilize an ingenious MOBOT – a mobile robot designed for planetary exploration to investigate this solar system and all its wonders?
  • solve the mystery of the mission’s failure and locate the missing crew?
  • travel to six unique planets and uncover their secrets?
  • solve puzzles, gather clues and communicate with the most temperamental artificial intelligence ever designed?
  • Are you prepared for… J.U.L.I.A.

J.U.L.I.A.: Among the Stars ist kein schlechtes Spiel.

Was fehlt?

6.0/10 Punkten

This game is simply a joy to play for any kind of adventure or sci-fi fans.

Pros:
- beautiful environments
- you have your trusty robot companions to talk to, so you'll never be alone!
- the chemistry between the characters is great, a lot of dry humor that will make you chuckle
- and of course the story, this is what sci-fi is all about, you will explore the unknown and continue to want more!
- no more pixel hunting, the game has a feature to autodetect items you can interact with. It's optional but it's a great feature!

Cons:
- not much really, some puzzles require a bit of trial and error or memorization, but nothing that would be annoying

This was a good one, some nasty puzzles aside. A 70/100 effort.

The good

Intriguing story, with lots of twists and branches
Some excellent music
Well voice acted
Some very devilish puzzles
Excellent UI
Serviceable graphics and animations

The bad

A timed puzzle later in the game that's annoying
No prompts to do the Mind'o'Matics - you'll miss out unless you know it's there
Some parts of the story are a little vague

This game does a good job of creating a believable future and the challenges presented keep you going thru the story. This game with all the sounds and graphics really give you that immersion. The only downside is that the puzzles presented in the game seem to break that immersion they just flow well with the story line and you have to keep asking yourself why am i doing this. Luckily there are only a handful of puzzles or it would have ruined the game for me.

This is a fascinating game. You might need to google some help for a handful of the puzzles; the game designers did a great job making things look inhuman/alien. All in all a good way to spend a few evenings. 10/10, did enjoy.

I just completed the game for the first time - so many years after the publication date; I am glad I got to play it!

I have about 200 point-and-click adventure games with and without puzzles. I have a lot of flukes in the list, as well as many classics. One thing I don't get is how come J.U.L.I.A. didn't get into the top 10 of the sci-fi genre in AT LEAST adventure games!

Here's a summary of what I discovered in the game:

Story:
The game's story is developed via multiple media such as notes, messages spread throughout pads on different stations, by analysing substances and items from the planets, talking to our bot and the mothership's A.I., communicating with alien life forms, as well as the memories of our protagonist (although these are scarce).

It's well-incorporated into the gameplay and doesn't feel like you're just eternally reading pieces of content. This game is definitely NOT an interactive movie or book.

Puzzles:
Before starting my own playthrough, I did read that some of the puzzles were not well-made. I beg to differ: every puzzle had a lot of sense, was logical and adequate. Even the repetitive items (which I usually really hate) were spot-on because it was inserted in the story. There's nothing illogical about performing the same action in order to achieve a similar end.

I had little to no problem solving the puzzles; they had the right difficulty. Once I got the overall idea behind each puzzle type, I could solve them within a reasonable time.

Music, sounds, environment and voiceovers:
The music in J.U.L.I.A. is well-suited to the overall style. I think they put so much effort into the audio that they put a lot of other similarly-dated titles to shame. The voiceover was something I definitely didn't expect from this game. Considering the price tag and the year it was originally published, I was surprised to have fully animated avatars with excellent voiceovers. I am really pleased - everyone was annoying when they were meant to be, and pleasing to listen to whenever they were supposed to be so.

Animations, optimisation, controls, glitches, bugs:
I had zero issues playing and streaming the game. I got no bugs, no game-breaking problems, no annoying glitches. After reading previous reviews, I am pleased to say that it seems like the makers have fixed all that had been an issue during the first years after the release.

Negative sides:
I can honestly say I cannot think of anything negative to say about this game. I really enjoyed it - totally my cup of tea. It's like the more interactive, better-paced big sister of Tacoma. Loved it.

J.U.L.I.A. is a well crafted point-and-click space adventure. You play as Rachel - a member of a interplanetary expedition who awakes to find her entire team gone. Your mission is to work with J.U.L.I.A. (the ship's AI) to trace their activities and discover what factors led to their demise. This involves navigating to several planets, exploring various sites, and solving a variety of puzzles. You, Rachel, stay on the main ship, and all of your exploring is done through the 'eyes' of a Probe with a voice and a personality. At times you are interacting with the environments and at other times, you are using the ship's interface for navigation, analysis, etc.

The characters are quite likable, with excellent voice acting for both Rachel and J.U.L.I.A. The story is engaging with art and sound that fit perfectly to bring the various environments to life. The dialog is well written and does not overwhelm the player. For those who wish to speed read, you can click through instead of listening.

The game is puzzle heavy with a very diverse set of activities. These includes hacking, decryption, completing blue prints, some 'find and use,' and several mechanical puzzles. There are additional optional memory puzzles which test how well you've been paying attention to the narrative. None of the puzzles were difficult but the interface is often lacking in clear instruction. Thus, on a number of occasions, I found myself with no idea of what I was supposed to do or how the puzzle worked. There are a few puzzles that are solved by pure trial and error, with no apparent clues pointing you towards a solution. Thus, patience (or a peek at a walk-through) may be required.

There is an explicit save feature as well as 'auto-save on exit.' This is much appreciated by this gamer.

The game played smoothly for me with one exception. I hit a known bug that only happens to an occasional player. It was a showstopper and was somehow related to my graphics configuration. Kudos to the developer at CBE who stepped up to assist and moved my save file just past the issue so that I could continue playing without losing any progress.

All and all, I enjoyed time with J.U.L.I.A. and recommend this to those who love exploratory puzzlers with a solid story and characters. When you finish the game and watch the credits, it is pretty amazing to realize that this game was basically designed and developed by two guys, with a little help from their friends! Another advantage of watching the game credits is that you get to listen to a track of music that I thought was very cool.

I bought the game yesterday because it was both on sale on Steam and had been on my wishlist for a few years now.

And also because I fancied playing a point and click adventure, and J.U.L.I.A. was well reviewed.

I bought the game yesterday, played it on and off all day and finished it about 10 minutes ago. Perhaps that's the review / recommendation all there, in a nutshell. I just couldn't let it go.

The backgrounds are beautiful, the puzzles are tricky without being hair-pulling and the story is really good. When I look back at it, the story fits together nicely.

Only things that are a bother are, the sassy ship AI gets annoying sometimes and I'm sure I've missed the complete explaination why the protagonist is alone on the ship to begin with.

I did rattle through it at some pace though, so there's a chance that a few details have slipped through the net.

So, 9 out of 10? Much fun, Steam sale price-point, well crafted. A good way to spend a day in Covid-19 lockdown.

Oh, and I might have missed something but what does J.U.L.I.A. stand for?

This is a SciFi/Mystery adventure point and click casual puzzle and story game. That should set your expectations to about where they should be when playing. IF you take the time to read things and perhaps take notes, as it doesn't have a built in function for that, you should get immersed enough that you enjoy it. Not actually reading the stuff in game makes it more difficult and potentially leave you lost and confused to what you should do next. There are parts of the game that are a bit more ambiguous as what you should do and you may have even figured it out mostly but done something slightly off, plenty of info online currently to get that quick hint if you need. I suggest if you want to preserve the feeling of accomplishment that you limit how often you use one of these sites but it's just a game and you are in it for the story and enjoyment not to get mad about being stuck soooo... There are technically only a couple endings and one event that adds a lil something to one or maybe both endings. I feel there are a few points of which your decisions could have sparked more endings or essentially ended the game early that maybe should have been a thing but overall the game was quite enjoyable. Assuming you take your time and just play to enjoy reading everything etc doing the Memomatic stuff(Not necessary apparently as I only did one), the game will take last more than 7 hours, I finished all I intended in about 10 apparently. I think someone can easily do it faster, and a speed runner that essentially knows the game maybe 3 hours or less. For me it was an enjoyable game that 10 hours was spread out over several days or maybe even a week so assuming the price point is good why not. The endings also may leave some dissatisfied to some degree, when you play and get near the end you'll expect certain things. That's it, hope this was helpful rather than a rambling.

I don't typically play or enjoy adventure games, but this one is really special thanks to its good writing, charming style, and high production values. I finished this game several years after buying it because it just stuck in my mind as something I wanted to finally finish. Even now, I'm writing this review a year after finishing it because I remember it so fondly. I hope these developers and artists get to create another great game!

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#78 out of 555)... it's time for JULIA: Among The Stars.

I'm honestly torn about whether or not I should give a thumbs up or thumbs down. If Steam would allow us to simply shrug here, that's the option I'd choose. JULIA is a competent, if dated, adventure game with a very predictable story, but the premise is engaging and the core mechanics work well and the solutions to the puzzles are generally intuitive. I got a good five hours of the game, and while I very much doubt I'll ever feel the need to return to this title, I don't exactly regret the time spent.

So... thumbs-sideways?

You start off the game playing as the space probe astrobiologist Rachel Manners, waking up from cryosleep.

What is your mission? Who did wake you up from cryosleep and why? - Well, I hope you enjoy finding that out, embarking on this point & click sci-fi adventure game, that has a very well written and intriguing story, with relatively hard and enjoyable puzzles.

- The story, as I said is very well written with great atmosphere, perfect for sci-fi and point & click adventure lovers
- Graphically the game looks great with really good cutscenes
- The music is simple, nice and relaxing, suiting the atmosphere
- Voice acting is amazing

A beautifully crafted take on the animated hidden object puzzler. The plot was better than most and the art was great.

Sound in some parts was bad and its riddled with typos and UI mechanics can make some things annoying. Also, I will always hate prompts that repeat and things that cannot be used yet appearing as tho they can be (jungle puzzle is a good example)

But all that said, if you like hidden object games this is the best of them I've seen.

A nice puzzle game with a classic story for every Sci-Fi fan. The puzzles are diverse and not too hard, but still rewarding once completed. A little out of the box thinking is sometimes needed. The sceneries are crafted with love, and it's amazing how small the development team apparently was.

An interesting sci-fi adventure game, in which you assume the role of a young xenobiologist just woken up from cryo-sleep on a damaged spaceship with the crew nowhere in sight. After establishing contact with the ship’s AI and the mobile explorator bot (Mobot), she sets out on the quest to explore the planets in the solar system where the ship has ended and discover its secrets, along with solving the mystery about what happened to the expedition. The game is designed as first-person point&click adventure, where you collect items, analyze them and apply in the right manner, solve puzzles and get past coded devices, assemble clues and use them to deduce the chain of past events. On the graphics side, individual screens have a nice look, animations are few and far in between with the quality corresponding the year of the game’s release. Music consists of some interesting melodies that underscore the atmosphere of space and individual planets nicely, and the dialogs are completely voiced with good quality. Game length is somewhere in the medium range, and will largely depend on your ability to solve puzzles (some of which are not quite trivial). There is also a DLC available with additional content, containing soundtrack and additional puzzles. Overall, J.U.L.I.A. is a good space adventure game that all space geeks should definitely try.

Have been totally swept into this game, since I purchased it a few days ago. I have always been a fan of adventure games that have you exploring interesting planets, and this one has captured my imagination with a terrific storyline. You get dialogue with two, cool A.I. companions, too. Technically, this is a point-and-click game, but it uses unconventional interfaces that makes it feel more like an adventure game. The voice acting, graphical background, stunning cutscenes, and ambient music keeps the game from ever feeling dull or repetitive, and overall, the game did a great job making me feel immersed in an alien environment.

I played with ubuntu linux, and I had three major technical issues. First, the game did not start at all, until I made a fix found in the forum. Second, the game freezes every time I exit. And lastly, the game options for sound and gamma were never saved, after exiting. None of these things caused an issue with gameplay, but the game loses some big points because these problems were never fixed. Also, some of the puzzles were a bit obtuse and required remembering long, alphanumeric passcodes. The game takes 2,900 MBs of diskspace, and it uses the Wintermute game engine. I played the game only using the mouse cursor.

Very surprised to like this game as much as I did, as I'm not a big adventure game fan. Highly recommend, though maybe wait till its a bit cheaper as it is not a super long game.

Pros
- Good atmosphere
- Solid story, kept me going throughout the game
- Very nice look to the game, especially for an indie
- Voice acting is decent, MOBOT is great though
- Some Puzzles are very good. Require some real thinking and are not just mindless A-Z things. However...

Cons
- Some puzzles are annoying in the extreme. Not in terms of difficulty, but in the actual practice of doing them. For example, an end game translation puzzles resets every time you fail, so if you have 2/3rds of it translated, one wrong click makes you reenter all the info you already know to be correct. Just annoying.
- First few worlds are nice and lengthy, the last 2-3 fly by and are less than 6 screens each for the most part.
- I had two crashes, both while saving my game. The save still worked, but not ideal.
