Über das Spiel

Legend of Grimrock 2 is a dungeon crawling role playing game with a modern execution but an oldschool heart. A group of four prisoners have shipwrecked on the secluded Isle of Nex. The island is filled with ancient crumbled ruins, mysterious shrines and a vast underground network of dungeons and mines. If the prisoners wish to make it out alive, they have to overcome the challenges devised by the ominous mastermind of the island.

Powers of perception and logic are more important than sheer force is, since Legend of Grimrock 2 puts a heavy emphasis on exploration, survival and challenging puzzles. Discover powerful ancient artifacts from hidden secret chambers and buried treasures. Arm your champions, cast spells and craft enchanted potions and bombs to aid you in fighting the dreadful monsters in highly tactical real-time combat.

Design, share and play custom scenarios with the included Dungeon Editor! Create your own adventures and fill them with puzzles, traps, or even totally new items, monsters and environments with custom graphics and audio!

Get ready to venture forth and uncover the secrets of Nex!

Features:
  • Explore the wilderness and the dungeons of Isle of Nex: walk in ancient forests riddled with mysterious magical statues, fight the denizens of poison fuming swamps, dive in the Forgotten River in search of treasure, uncover secrets hidden deep below…

Fastpathed, göttliche Reaktionen verlangende Thirdperson Action Games?

Ein herrliches grid-based oldschool-RPG.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=327082643

Alles sehr gute Spiele!

Metzeln, Looten, Leveln, Laufen,...

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2457124551

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=607313907

Fazit:

Grimrock 2 is a great game if you want to wildly fluctuate between "MY BRAIN IS HUGE" and "I'M THE DUMBEST AND MOST BLIND PERSON IN THE WORLD"

The base gameplay is pretty great, with lots of puzzles to tease your brain and lots of secrets to find. Grimrock also does the thing where if you know where to look, either from being really observant, or from just knowing things from a previous playthrough, you can get near endgame gear pretty early, which is the best way to reward the player for secret hunting. There's a hunger mechanic but food is plentiful enough that you shouldn't have to worry about actually running out. Combat can get a little trivialized against a single enemy if you're out in the open with room to move around, but that's not always the case.

Game looks good: environments are distinct to the point where you shouldn't get too confused about where you are if you're doing that "can't use the map" challenge, enemies are all unique and don't blend together, and important game/puzzle design assets are all clearly signposted. Unless something is deliberately hidden in darkness you should be able to see the buttons and ladders the game wants you to see.

Game sounds good: weapons and spells sound like they have the appropriate impact, enemies sound distinct to the point where you can tell whats in a closed room, the ambient sounds for areas are pretty good and appropriately creepy at times, and the times when full blown music kicks in are great.

There's a lot of different character creation options and skills to choose from, enough that two people can play with completely different setups. There's the usual issue where people have metagamed the "best" race/trait/class combinations, but on a regular playthrough there's no need to try to be super optimal.

The only things that I would consider bad is that some solutions are set up in such a way where if your brain doesn't click with that the developers intend, you'll be stuck for a long time and might end up looking solutions online because what you're supposed to do is so far out of left field from what you expect that you'll never think of it. Some skills are definitely not as good as others and might end up feeling like a waste of skill points. There's a very important item, where if you don't understand its value you might leave it somewhere because it's essentially worthless aside from its one use and forget about it, in which case say goodbye to the real ending, which isn't a great feeling and really discouraging if that happens.

Grimrock 2 is a great game, awesome dungeon crawler, a straight improvement over the first game in everyway, to the point where the first game is essentially obsolete now. I give it a "WHY WON'T THIS LEPRECHAUN LEAVE ME BE" out of ten, would absolutely recommend.

Surprisingly open grid-based RPG. Don't care for secrets that consist of wall humping with no 'hints', but few amounted to more than minor supplies which I found largely unused on hard. Biggest sin is the questionable balance (lolfirearms, magic scrolls missing despite the spells working, wizard class) which can easily be worked around with outside information.

I played LoG1 and liked it. I was following the development of LoG2 a while back, but only get to play now after close to a decade.

When it comes to skills and graphics, the game is an improvement to LoG1, but sadly that is all I can say positive things about this game compared to LoG1.

What's bad about it? Others have said it: the puzzles. I like a little challenge in dungeon crawler games, but when you are hammered puzzle after puzzle to the point you are spending 70% of your time playing this game walking around looking for obscure button on the wall or backtracking to see if you are missing something, the game loses its fun. It is no longer a game.

LoG2 wants to give a sense of an open-world game, with the outdoor/indoor explorations. While this is a good thing, but combined with the amount of puzzles, this is a bad combo. You could be trying to solve 2-3 puzzles at the same time, and not having a clue which one of the puzzles you are supposed to solve first, and which area you are supposed to cover first.

Battles are more challenging, which is good. But again, with the open-world concept and puzzles, it can make you wonder sometimes "am I supposed to be in this area?" Considering that the game is less forgiving on mistakes in your party development or item usage, you can find yourself in a very tight situation unable to progress because you put the wrong skill points. The monsters can be too hard to take down with the wrong party development. Imagine a situation where it can take your party a considerable amount of hp and mana, and many retries on your part by saving/loading, to take down one monster. Now multiple that monster by 5 all in one area, that's the challenge LoG2 is throwing at you.

If you like scratching heads and frustrations, this game might be for you.

But if you are looking to enjoy and progressing, this isn't for you.

Legend of Grimrock 2 brought me back to my gaming beginnings, to Eye of the Beholder serial that I played a very long time ago, and loved it completely. So, this game has a unique movement mechanics. You will found no game today that works that way. The whole map is divided into squares and you move one square at the time. You have four people in the party, in formation, 2 in front row, 2 in second row. Second row characters basically can not use melee weapons cause they can not reach the enemy.

Sure, there is skill that you can take that you can use second row guys to attack with swords, but it is better to use them as a mage and/or guy that uses pistol or musket. Or throwing weapons. You have many options what and how to use. This is a classic RPG, with skills and upgrading and items, and this great movement way, that was considered in the past as something that is not so cool. But actually, it is.

I was so happy that I found this game, and got to the point that I actually installed it and played it. It brought back all the nice memories when I was discovering what games could really be. And how they can advance, and be greater and better things. Even though now is February, this game is for me game of the year. It has excellent riddles, and it offers you a lot for your money.

If you are RPG fun, if you are old school gamer, hell, even if you are newbie, you should check this game out. It has such a nice atmosphere, it is wrapped in mistery, and it offers great satisfaction with every small victory and with every small upgrade of your characters. Maps are huge, riddles are many, and you will have 50-70 hours of pure joy, way more then other game can offer nowadays (they mostly offer 25-35 hours of single player gameplay for price of 60€). You seriously can not miss with this one. Pure gem.

If you’ve never played the first game, I would highly recommend you play it first, as Grimrock 2 offers more complex customisation for your characters, as well as open environments which change how you can play and figure out puzzles.
The Legend of Grimrock 2 or TLoG2 is an indie DRPG developed by four people. At its core, it is a puzzle game with some combat, though don’t be deceived when I say some – combat plays a big role in fighting bosses and dealing with certain puzzle elements. Going forward from TLoG1, TLoG2 has updated visuals and environments, starting on the beach of the Island of Nex. You are then chasing down the Master of Nex all the way through the game – seeing a mysterious figure every now and then, that’s always just out of reach.
A lot of the puzzles are fairly simple when it comes down to it – find the button, press it, get to area. Others though are much more complex with how they’re actually set out. For example, there are bouncing bolt puzzles where you’ve got to use teleporters (aka Windgates) to delay the bolt from getting where it needs to so you can cross a magical bridge, or timing the bolt to go between two closing gates which you control. There are also cyphers to decrypt which I found a little tedious, but they’re important for entering the Cemetery, the Archives, and digging up a relic from the past (though how it got to the Island of Nex and how long it has been since the original game is all left up in the air).
One thing I really love about the Grimrock series is that you can be flanked by enemies. You can absolutely put yourself in a situation where you have completely fucked yourself over. No amount of potion guzzling will fix that. The combat has a focus on physical frontliners – your knights, barbarians, and fighters – and your missile and magic backline – your rogues, alchemists, battle mages, mages, etc. There’s even a joke class called the Farmer – which if you do want to do that achievement, bring him to Herdman’s Cove where there are constantly regenerating fungi monsters that provide food (how you level the Farmer). I made the mistake of assuming the battle mage was a frontliner, and suffered for it (the character died a lot), but it was extremely useful to have that extra magic constantly.
But actually talking about combat, it is a hazy wash of a thing at times – do you deal with enemy A in front of you, or enemy B, who while weaker, is closer to another stronger enemy like enemy A? How do you manage your team? And make sure you fire your spell between attacks or you’ll hit yourself. The micromanagement of the team and getting spells right is very important; as I had a water/ground and fire/air mage, they knew different spells, and sometimes I’d flub the combo on both of them, meaning I lost precious time in a difficult battle. I recommend fire/air mage, cause while water has freezing utility, and ground has poison utility, the stronger spells are locked to fire/air.
And that’s the fun bit about combat – it keeps you on your toes and keeps you making decisions like you were a party in trouble in high stakes situation.
So while I haven’t really discussed the puzzles (because I think its better to go in and experience them for yourself), they are definitely the centrepiece of TLoG2. There are so many maps, so many secrets, so many variations on the same puzzle that really work without making it seem like the same thing you’ve done over and over again, it really is a treat and a huge step up from TLoG1.
Just to talk quickly about TLoG1 – it’s the same deal but instead you’re in the titular prison of the Grimrock. No chance of escaping, the prison was built to keep people and monsters in. The major difference is the puzzles are much more focused on paying very close attention to your environments as you delve deeper into the game. There’s no rope, and sometimes falling is the only way forward.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed The Legend of Grimrock 2. Its nothing too crazy, but games in this genre are rarely as polished as this series is. If you like gridbased games, or are a fan of puzzle games, I would highly recommend both in the Grimrock series.

Classic in the genre that still holds up today. The sequel has more open stage design, player frequenting between both outdoor and indoor segments of the island, which has allowed the developers to craft really fun and creative exploratory experience.

Combat from first Legend of Grimrock are kept and improved, so I definitely recommend this game to those who enjoyed the gameplay of the predecessor.

Someone had the genius idea to create a game based on the technically outdated features where you can barely move or even interact with the slightest object in the overworld, and SOMEHOW made it even worse than those games from 20+ years ago. Not even the incredible mod support and/or player-made content can save this pure garbage.

Legend of Grimrock II is one of the best old school grid-based dungeon crawler RPGs ever!

I really loved Legend of Grimrock I and couldn’t imagine that it could be improved any further. And then Legend of Grimrock II was released! It took everything that was great about the first game and made it bigger and better.

Exploration in this game is a lot of fun. You can decide where you want to go at any given time. Stuck on a puzzle? Just go somewhere else and come back later. I really like that they basically made the game open world. It has a good amount of puzzles with varying difficulty, traps, secrets, hidden loot and challenging enemies.

The graphics are absolutely beautiful to look at and I really like the atmosphere of the game. In the first game of the series we only had the prison with the same bleak walls everywhere. And in this game we have this huge island with forests, swamps, deserts, mines etc.

There is a good amount of different classes and skills and creating a party of four people allows for variety of gamestyles. There are also more enemy types, each with their own combat mechanics. (These damn frogs in the swamp!)

For a more challenging experience you can disable the auto-mapping feature and draw the map manually instead. I would definitely recommend playing it this way at least once.

Super fun game that improves on the original's mechanics drastically. The game manages to pull off a grid based system fairly well in the outdoor areas, and just as good as the previous game inside dungeons and indoor areas. Puzzles now are more environmental based, and rewards players who take the time to explore areas, due to the slightly less linear level design from its predecessor. The game is surprisingly long as well. Many times i'll start a new file and not even make it to the midgame despite putting hours into each session. The lore of the Isle of Nexus is fun to interpret and to look into, if you're into that stuff, and the lore from the prior game is also expanded on.

Some negatives with this game compared to Legend of Grimrock 1 are that the outdoor areas can feel pretty weird. I can understand the grid based system for the first game as it was solely a dungeon crawler - having you walk through cramped tunnels and corridors, but seeing these wide, open environments and having them tied to grid based movement feels off. Sometimes there are places where you really should be able to walk through. Other times you can get stuck in little gap in the terrain and you don't know how you got in there, because it looks like any direction could've gotten you into that spot. Besides that, however, the system still works.

Combat is expanded on and is more enjoyable as enemies now can mix up their movement, or can have multiple attacks. Enemies feel more mobile and threatening because of this. Enemy types have been expanded on. Some enemies can't physically hurt you, some are used for interesting puzzles and some act as minibosses. The first game seriously lacked this diversity, so it's good to see in its sequel.

Definitely, the one thing I love most about this game (and the series) is it's replay value. There are way to many classes and weapons to use in one playthrough, so you can go back and try out interesting combos in your next. I personally had the most fun when i broke away from my usual Warrior/Rogue at the front and Archer/Magician at the back for some of the new classes brought into this sequel. Also, another thing that keeps me playing its the surprisingly in depth level editor. Im guessing the devs ported their editor that they used to make each level directly into the game for the player to try out. I still don't understand how to code or anything advanced, but I love designing puzzles, decorating levels and making a cohesive map in my free time. I know most players haven't touched the level editor, but I'm glad it was expanded upon in this game. If you love making custom maps, definitely get this game!

TL:DR: Overall this sequel is a massive improvement from its predecessor (which was already a great game to begin with). It manages to be fresh and smart with its level design and puzzles. It improves on the systems that Legend of Grimrock 1 had, and has been one of the most enjoyable games I have ever played on steam. I hope the developers seriously think about making a Legend of Grimrock 3, since I cant get enough of this series! (Please consider it AlmostHuman. I know it's been 6 years but a man can dream.) Sorry if this became a rant, but I really like this game.

This game is phenomenal to say the least I don't know why I put this game off for such a long time but oh boy am I glad I gave it my 5th or 6th attempt I tried playing this game in early 2017 and have picked it up for varying degrees of time and completion but I finally buckled down and sat through the entire thing and to put it simply this game is the best of it's kind not that it has much competition nowadays it's a master class in storytelling, art design, sound and ambience but most of all the engaging riddles and puzzles really get your brain working more so then most games which are just straight up one dimensional puzzle's but what really hooked me in compared to the first game instead of a dark closed in dungeon for 100% of the game in LOG2 you get multiple huge areas to explore and adventure which leads me to another great feature about this game if you get stuck you're not forced to sit there and think for minutes or hours about a mind numbing riddle you just simply leave and go somewhere else on the island and if your lucky you might find a clue for what you were stuck on overall I've got to say this is one of my favorite games period and I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys rpg' s , puzzles & riddles, or just a great fucking game!!!

Read more of my short essays on video games at strategineer.com

The world around us is mysterious, magnificent and beautiful. It’s a living breathing ecosystem with an internal logic of its own. Mother Nature, and Father Concrete, represent the interwoven complexity held within the environments that we live in and explore.

In the real world, the environments we inhabit can be quite uninteresting, but anything is possible in a video game.

I’ve been playing Legend of Grimrock 2 recently. I'm having a wonderful time, because the environment is more than just a place where gameplay happens, it IS the gameplay.

LoG 2 starts off by ship wrecking your party of four characters on a presumably deserted island. It plunges you head first into a fantastical world of: ruins, temples, dungeons, pyramids, burial grounds, poisonous mushroom infested forests, beaches; all filled to the brim with secrets to discover and riddles to solve.

It's a modern take on old school cRPGs like Wizardry. There aren't many games designed like this these days.

There are several reasons for this, there’s no hiding the fact that this kind of CRPG fell out of favor decades ago.

But there’s one particular gaming trend (it’s more of a behemoth really) which lies at the absolute other end of the character vs. environment focused design spectrum compared to games like LoG 2 that I would like to discuss.

It’s no secret that AAA games spend a ton of money and time on making the player character as fun to play as possible, then they drop the character into a beautiful looking environment, fill it with enemies of some kind and let you go to town; towers may or may not be involved.

Combine that with the modern need to artificially pad game times leads to games with expansive but mostly empty open worlds full of repetitive combat encounters.

This design is inherently easy to scale up while maintaining a reasonable level of consistency within the entire game. More money leads to paying more artists minimum wage, or barely above it, to make the landscape which is then filled with more copy pasted combat encounters. Designs like this are tired and boring.

It’s hard to make a power fantasy (which most AAA games are nowadays) with a focus on the environment because if the environment provides interesting challenges and obstacles for the player to overcome then is the player all powerful? Hint: The answer is no.

I would rather spend a couple hours playing a well crafted experience than a hundred of boring gameplay in cookie cutter worlds.

Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes of course, but usually they’re not power fantasies. Resident Evil 2 Remake is a good example of a modern AAA game that isn’t a power fantasy which emphasises the environment as a core part of the gameplay loop. You run around the Raccoon City police station dealing with zombies, searching for clues and keys in the environment to continue progressing through the game. I quite enjoyed the game as a result; it’s not every day that I decide to beat a game over ten times.

And so, carefully crafted environments intimately tied to gameplay like in LoG 2 are becoming more and more rare. This might be because of the prevalence of power fantasies in the AAA video game industry.

There have been numerous examples of AAA games achieving great mainstream success by foregoing open world soup game designs such as the previously mentioned Resident Evil 2 Remake. In the CRPG space, Divinity Original Sin II centers the gameplay around how the player characters, the enemies, their skills and their spells interact with each other within the environment filled with (you guessed it!) secrets to uncover to create compelling and open ended gameplay.

There's something to be said for playing a game where behind every corner awaits a new discovery. Where your cleverness is rewarded with meaningful rewards. Where the environment is something to be studied and understood.

Modern open world AAA game design is boring and we should expect more from the games we play.

Great old-school dungeon-crawler with millennial graphics, lots of levels both indoors and out, some difficult late on fights and lots of puzzles, some infernally difficult. I can't remember ever needing so much help with a game even though i solved much of it myself. i think part of the problem here is the large scale of the map and having several areas on the go at once it can feel daunting but nevertheless it's a triumph in (too) clever design and a game i had to see through to the end. If you want to purchase it, better get that thinking cap on.

Bigger and prettier than the previous game, the world is still a tightly knit maze of puzzles and secrets. The skill system is notably vastly expanded from Grimrock 1 (where it was ideal to focus on only one combat skill and nothing else); this time you need to design your characters carefully, so the entire party can fight and survive in every phase of this potentially brutally punishing adventure.

Aside from a couple moments where the puzzles or enemies slightly crossed the line into BS, the atmosphere is still amazing, so it's a recommendation.

I can't believe I haven't recommended this. Hell yeah I do! While I'm not huge into the 'old school dungeon crawl' style, this game makes the box bigger.

Originally I played a game called 'legend of skullkeep' which I believe was a sequel to 'dungeon master' or a renaming of 'dungeon master 2' (I'm not sure). Anyway! The reason I mention this is because I LOVED Skullkeep. SO MUCH.

I didn't 100% go wild for the dungeons or the end game, but a lot of the game takes place outdoors. And if you know old school dungeons crawls you'll know that a lot of them take place exclusively indoors. (hell, Legend of Grimrock took place mostly indoors!) However, Skullkeep was mostly different. It also had some really interesting elements including some really bizarre boss where you had to lure them into a side passage and crush them basically.

ANYWAY, moving back to Legend of Grimrock 2...I adore the outdoor sections! Even though the game is gridlocked (lol) it still feels very organic because of how fluid the movement is and mixing with the outdoors. It feels so good to walk around outdoors! Not just that, but the aesthetic is great!

I think my biggest complaint about the game is that it's just a bit content light. There aren't a ton of spells, the main game is just a tiny bit short and in general the game is just a little light. That's ok though! Even for it's current asking price I am still happy with it. (Though one thing I WIIIIIISH The game had was weather effects and it's missing vendors!)

If there was one game that I wish there was an expansion pack for in the current days, this would be it. I'd also LOVE to use this engine to make a game of my own too if I could.

Overall I love to see this game in the modern era and I want more!

It's fun to an extent. if you're looking for a modern taken on dungeon crawls you'll get some fun hours out of LoG2. Some of the puzzles are awkward, but keep at it and you'll get through. Character advancement is fairly bland and you'll be very limited on skill points, but otherwise the loot and exploration is good.

This is just a game where you move around and attack things, and as you get better at it, you start doing both those things at the same time.
Notes for beginners: You CAN make a nearly useless character on accident, but with thought you can also make them useful again later. All classes/races are viable depending on play style, but some are more beginner friendly. Think BEFORE you act. If it looks like a trap, it's a trap. If it does not look like a trap, you haven't looked hard enough. And lastly, THE ROPE LETS YOU CLIMB DOWN HOLES SO YOU DON'T NEED TO FALL.

Brilliant game. Really loved this. If you liked the first Grimrock, you should absolutely like this game much more no problem. It's pretty much exactly the first game just... better. Also, the way the story is, you really do not need to play the first game at all. If you've not played Grimrock 1, don't worry, just jump right in here and you'll have just as good a time if not better. This is pretty much what 1 wanted to be but maybe had trouble accomplishing.

The world is more open ended, letting you solve the challenges and puzzles in your own way for the most part.

The puzzles are really vague and rarely a rarely unfair (I only looked up the answer to about 3 this entire game), but overall I loved them. It captures the feel of really old school point and click type games. There's tiny little secret buttons in walls that open up stone doors walls, there's classic pressure plate traps... that kind of thing. Expect it to feel like an old school first person dungeon crawler, just more modern. There's still some clunk, but honestly, it's part of the charm too.

The RPG combat system is really simple. Level up what you want, use weapons how you want. Not really turn taking, but movement is grid based, so its more reliant on stats than actual gameplay. That's fine, it's what you'd expect. It's not bad, it's not AMAZING, but it's pretty good for what it is.

Now the sound design and atmosphere!! That's where this game shines. That's probably the peak thing about this game. All the sounds and visuals and effects are wonderful. Everything feels really mysterious really ancient, really confusing and interesting. The dungeons can feel like some old-school pyramids at times with the traps and old walls and junk. Lighting is good. Yes.

Downsides are what you'd expect from a game like this. Expect a lot of backtracking (you'll unlock plenty of shortcuts but still), expect some inventory management, expect to be stuck on puzzles for a while and expect yourself to get lost and not know where to go. Take a break, come back to it, you'll figure it out eventually.

Anyway! Cool game. Loved it. One of my favorite games I've played this year for sure. Rec it to people who want the 'classic dungeon crawler' feel or people who just want a fairly chill puzzly/rpg/exploration type thing.

Improves on the original.
The puzzles and exploration were the most fun parts and I liked the varied monsters and environments. Annotating the map is very useful (Something I only realised could be done a few hours in) and it is important to be organised such as remembering where a note was from and planning in advance what skills you will need to focus on. Most puzzles are solvable with a bit of thought and patience but I found it necessary to cheat a few times when I got stuck.
Combat is fairly good but does involve lots of dancing around the monsters to get hits in before they can get into position to attack.
Some people will find a game like this frustrating and won't finish it (around 10-20% of players have the achievement for finishing the game) so I think it's fair to say it's quite niche. I however, spent nearly 40 hours on this game for my play-through and can't wait for Grimrock 3 which I hope is being worked on.
Recommended price £5-10.

If you have played, and enjoyed, the first Legend of Grimrock, then this game essentially improves on every aspect of the first, from combat and classes to puzzles and maps, and I would highly recommend it.

For everyone else, Legend of Grimrock is a thoroughly well thought out puzzler adventure game that is heavily stylized after old-school RPGs, complete with grid-based movement, using buttons to physically turn, and requiring you to take notes of what is happening on the mysterious island your party of 4 is stuck in.

The game is not for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who enjoy a note-taking, old-school experience.

This is the best game of its kind. If you like a grid based first person dungeon crawl, you will not find a better one.

I was a bit put off by how much of it is outdoors in the pictures (because basically I wanted to re-live my memories of Eye of the Beholder) but don't sweat it - there's LOADS of fantastic dungeons. And they're all really good too - heaps and heaps of exploring for secrets and solving puzzles... Top marks!

Better than the first one. More varied locations, less timed puzzles, and a fairly decent story. A 75/100 effort.

The good

Lots of different places to explore
And they're not all dungeons
Good outdoor environments
Bright, colourful palette
Music is good
Some very challenging puzzles
Some very challenging boss fights
Great armour and weapon options
Alchemy potions and bombs are great
A compelling game - you want to keep exploring

The bad

Spells are a little blah
Arrows and crossbow bolts are scarce, making playing a bowman a PITA
No real character development apart from increasing stats/traits
A couple of annoying timed puzzles, but nothing major
World layout can be confusing

This fantastic throwback to old school RPGs improves upon the first game in nearly every way. The more open environments above ground are beautiful and bring a welcome change of scenery over the first game.
This game does seem a touch more difficult than the first but I am still early in the playthrough so that may change.
If you enjoy the old school dungeon-crawlers, well-crafted RPGs, or just love hunting for secrets, definitely give this game a shot!

AWESOME! Worth every penny - the price is very reasonable for all the awesome content you get.

I loved Legend of Grimrock.
Legend of Grimrock 2 is just amazing. You rarely see a sequel that exceeds the original. Well LoG2 does just that. If you liked the first game, you will absolutely be amazed by LoG2.

In LoG2 - you are introduced to a significantly more tiered environment. You start on a beach, and then explore an island.
Don't be fooled, there is no shortage of dungeons on this island, but it is incredibly refreshing to step out into bright sunlight and greenery after a long dungeon crawl. It really helps relieve and even eliminate that sense of claustrophobia.
You also have difficulty settings to choose from so your game-play matches your preference.

It is a typical RPG build system. Select a Race, a Class, spend your Base Stat points (this is a one time thing so choose carefully), then select 2 Traits, and then spend the 2 starting skill points each character receives (humans can get a third if they take the race trait) - be VERY careful when spending your points and do not try to multi-spec - it just won't work. You pretty much will only be able to spec out 3 skills on any character with only a few points left over to drop into off-skills. You need to be very frugal and very focused with your builds. You will probably know by lvl 6 if you've made a mess of your character build and need to start over. (I know.. it happened me *wink* )

The pacing is nice and enemies mostly tier with you. Do NOT try to rush thru the game, or you will miss out on a lot of content and opportunities. Take your time, explore every nook and cranny. The handy marker and notes system provided with the map is such a welcomed bonus ! In addition, there are fast-travel locations to help with getting around - they really thought of everything.

Loot is moderate, but mostly satisfying. I would liked to have seen a little more loot variety - and it did seem a bit constrained when it came to armor. Trying to gear out 4 characters is not easy and you really do need to get the Secrets (rooms) if you want the good stuff - so patience and tenacity really pay off here. Be aware, GOLD Keys are rare, so spend them very wisely. Lock-picks seemed to be in sufficient quantity so you should be able to loot most regular chests.

Healing can be a big challenge, but fortunately the crystals have a reasonable cool-down and help to conserve healing potions which can sometimes be in short order. If you really want to make sure you don't run out of supplies, bring an alchemist along - resources auto-multiply in the Alchemist's inventory (very slowly tho). Also, it doesn't hurt to make abundant use of the Quick-Save feature and the regualar Save features.

Dungeons are incredible! Secrets to be found everywhere, multiple levels, great puzzles, awesome traps, and good fights. You really begin to appreciate just how much content is in this game and how much love the developers put into the game design.

Overall I give this game a 10/10
What a wonderful and enjoyable game to play.

As a casual gamer, this just requires far too much scrounging / searching for my tastes. Also, the combat feels gimmicky to me, almost like my characters' stats count for nothing, only dancing around like it's a bullet-hell game and attacking with my 1 character that has the right rock paper scissors attack for my opponent. Clearly this game is awesome in a lot of ways, but it just isn't for me.

(English is not my first language, I apologize for possible writing errors)

One of the best RPGs i played in the last years. The first impact could be strange if you're not used to old-school grid-based games, but you just need to get used to it. Once done, you can enjoy a very polished and well-made RPG. It has a perfect balance between fights and puzzles, some of which will request a lot of thinking, expecially thinking out of the box. Solve a puzzle you have been stuck for hours is really satisfying, only to find you have one even harder after that or that you have freed a horde of monsters!
Character creation and progression is one of the best aspect I personally found in the game: characters can be customized by you preferences and their development is really important and need long-term pianification, since the difficulty is higher then many other RPGs.
The game is full of secrets to uncover, in your first playthrough you will find maybe not even half of them, encouraging backtraking and exploring the game world.
Graphics and design are beautiful for its genre, level design is really curate and rewards attenction for details and exploring.
Combat is the classic of grid-based RPGs, but in some ways revamped and improved. It's really nice to play and can be quite challenging, expecially in boss fights.
As I said, difficulty is higher than other RPGs, even at Normal. Hard is really tough, and there are options to make the game even harder, to people to like challenges! (Or masochists...)
Story is not so deep, but as you approch to the end you will find some lore about the franchise. The game has also multiple endings.
The game can be completed in around 20 hours, but to find all secrets you will need a lots more. After that, the game has an editor where you can create your dungeons, wolrds and campaigns, and you can also play the ones created by other players, some of which are very well-made!

I can't recommend this game enough. Give it a try, is really good!

Legend of Grimrock 2 is a first-person dungeon crawling experience, written and created in the same spirit of older games such as Eye of the Beholder, Lands of Lore and Dungeon Master. You play as a shipwrecked party of 4 (which you can create and customize yourself), who must work together to overcome monsters and puzzles in order to escape the island of Nex.

The game is a spiritual successor of its predecessor in virtually every aspect of the franchise. While in LoG1 you adventure through the eponymous Grimrock, a linear dungeon consisting of about 12 levels, LoG2’s Nex is more open world, providing an overland experience into different swamps, forests and beaches that house different dungeons. LoG also introduces the Ratling race, and includes the Battlemage, Alchemist, Knight, Barbarian and Farmer into playable classes.

Gameplay and combat take place on a 3d rendered grid, where every movement takes place on a “tile” of the map. Two party members serve as the “front line”, and two take their place in the back, usually with ranged weapons, spells or far-reaching weapons if they have the appropriate skill points.

The game’s difficulty is consistent; from the first giant turtles and Mermen you fight at the beginning to the Medusa, Ogres and Magma Golems you fight towards the end, the game will constantly push you and make things difficult, even when you think your party is balanced and fully-fleshed out. This makes party composition and each character’s builds vital, as spreading out their points too much will result in failure. Some skills are better than others – while alchemy and armor are almost vital, skills such as athletics and endurance fall off in their overall usefulness. Additionally, races and classes tend to subvert typical fantasy tropes and expectations. For example, you would think that a knight would stack strength and vitality, but their most prized stat is dexterity because it improves their chances to evade attacks. Minotaurs are more ideal for dealing ranged damage with throwing weapons because throwing attacks scale with strength instead of dexterity.

Much of the game is based around puzzles, which can range from being based on reflexes, logic, or riddles. Some of them are moon logic; for example, in order to get to the Temple of Water, you have to stand on a corner near the river at night and look towards the temple – eventually, a leprechaun will appear and walk over the air, creating a bridge behind him as he goes (consider that one a freebie). Some puzzles are solved by switches, which are disguised as circular or rectangular buttons in walls which can be easily missed at times.

TLDR – while the game does have a high learning curve and frustrating elements, the overall experience feels rewarding once you succeed

A fresh take on a classic genre. If you have fond memories of the Eye of the Beholder games, look no further.

A pretty major improvement over the first game (itself still quite good) in every regard. Great graphics and use of lighting, tricky-but-not-too-tricky puzzles, more variety of environments, variety in combat... wonderful.

I didn't think LoG 2 could be better than the first Legend of Grimrock, but I was wrong. No longer confined to just the dungeon, LoG 2 takes you outdoors, underground, through a castle, a swamp, a cemetary...much more diversity in the landscape this time around. It's bigger, longer and definitely tougher than the first game. One of my favorite RPGs ever, highly recommended!

To be honest I had a different expectations from this game. I heard it's a very good old-school grid-movement RPG with modern graphic. Well is this like Might&Magic, Realms of Arkania, Lands of Lore, Ultima Underworld, Wizardy, even as Stonekeep? Well, unfortunately no. The story here is very shallow, there are practically no NPCs and such. After a while game just starts to get boring. I'm also not fun of real-time battles introduced here. However there are reasons why this game is so high-rated. The game is all about dungeon-crawling and it does that perfectly. Good graphic, large palette of puzzles, and the specific content allows players to create their own dungeons. Game works without issues on Linux (Steamplay). The basic price is too high imho, but game is worthy to be bought on sales or in bundles.

While the first Grimrock was an homage to Eye of the Beholder 1, this one takes the concept and goes in a completely new direction. The island is a great world to explore with lots of different terrains, enemies, and puzzles to solve. Leaps and bounds better than the original (which was still quite good), my only complaint is that there isn't a Grimrock 3.
