 • Lizenzierter Indie-Soundtrack

Chloes Story

Life is Strange: Before the Storm ist, wie schon erkennbar im Titel, die Vorgeschichte vom ersten Life is Strange Teil. Ich kann Life is Strange: Before the Storm sehr empfehlen.

★ Worum geht’s? ★

Life is Strange Befor The Storm ist ein so unglaublich Schönes und so emotional starkes Spiel.

Life is Strange Before the Storm

Life is Strange Before the Storm
Teen game from 2017.

You play sixteen-year-old Chloe Price, who has an unusual friendship with Rachel Amber, a pretty and popular girl who is destined for success.
No longer alone, the two girls have to face their demons and find a way to defeat them together.
So much for the game.
In contrast to the advertising text, I strongly doubt that a girl at 16 would behave so childishly. It may be so in America, but I don't really believe in it. Anyway, this game is made sweet, but the target group is more likely to be among the 12-14 year old girls who are going through a difficult period of their teenage years.
It is hardly possible to write a review about this game without writing anything about the content. Since I do not want to tell you everything beforehand, I limit myself to talking a little around it.
I find the story you can make too weak in terms of content to be really good. However, the narrative as such is by no means bad. The main points in the game I liked from the implementation. Unfortunately, much is based on discussions that lead to different courses of the game. In my opinion, this is exactly what breaks the game. To turn back the time in town as in the original, you have to conduct a target-oriented interaction.
I find the dream sequences quite well done, let yourself be surprised. Another disruptive factor in the game are the graffiti and what the developers came up with. It's just stupid.
All in all, I will rate this game as negative, although it is not bad. However, the perceived negative aspects prevail. This is a matter of taste. Therefore I will also issue it as an info. If it does not play in front of the original and above all it plays with as little background knowledge as possible. So you will definitely enjoy it.

Here you will find my group and my archive with over 1,050 reviews. Enjoy browsing.

Gameplay
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2125051724

Story

Grafik/Sound

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2125052198

Fazit

Ohne Spoiler/No Spoiler

Dieses Review widmet sich sowohl Life is Strange, als auch Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

Pro:

+Tiefgründige Story
+Detailreich
+Unfassbar viele Möglichkeiten
+Genug Pfade die es zu erkunden gibt
+Geheime Orte um Fotos/Graffitis zu machen

Contra:

Fazit: Für Story begeisterte Spiele ist Life is Strange ein Must Have

10/10

Edit: Mein einziger Wunsch für diese Reihe wäre ein Sequel zu Life is Strange 1, welche die Ereignisse von Life is Strange: Before the Storm aufgreifen.

Idno man, this is a very weak yes from me. Youknow that black mirror episode where you sometimes get to choose an action? Where you don't feel like the choices you make really matter? That is basically this game. The story is good and bring out some feels, but the story is also all it has.

This is a fantastic story. I really want to write that it would be much better in a tv format, viewed rather than played, as old school adventure games are paced unnecessarily slowly. I can't ultimately do that here because of the mechanics unique to this title. I mean, you go around secretly writing snarky graffiti on everything, your special power is piling on verbal abuse based upon dialogue queues, and your next objective is literally written in sharpie on your hand for you to check in on. It's pretty hilarious.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a prequel for the first Life is Strange, where you playing as Chloe after Max move from Arcadia Bay and you get into a strange friendship with Rachel.

I must say, that you should play the first LiS game before trying this one. The game is not that long and maybe it doesn't feel that open or it feels more scripted, but to be honest, I think it's more heavier than the first game, emotionally. If you like story games which plays with your emotion, and also you like Life is Strange, playing this one too. Worth all the money.

As usual, the LiS universe is a beautiful game full of genuine characters that bring you to tears.

Chloe and Rachel are beautiful together, and I love how you can see how they effect each other. Not as incredible as the first game, this helps shed some light to Chloe's situation and feelings, and helps connect everything together. The bonus episode wrecked me.

Out of all the Life Is Strange games this one is my favourite. I grew up in a similar situation to Chloe so i connected emotionally to her story a lot. Best thing about the LIS games is the sound tracks 100%. The game hits your feels specially if you played the first LIS because you know the fate of Rachael. Buy this game if you haven't already you wont regret it.

I enjoyed Life is Strange and I think it’s on par with Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead, but Life is Strange: Before the Storm is one of those prequels that shouldn’t have been made in the first place. This game undermines the characterization of Chloe by showing too much for the audience. The first game had already given us bits and pieces of information about Chloe and Rachel’s relationship, but it was kept in the shadows for us to imagine it. In this case, it would’ve been better for the story to embrace the importance of “Less is More.”

As a prequel, I understand that the writers don’t have a lot of leeway in establishing a significant plot that doesn’t impact or change the first game. That’s a difficult task to accomplish and at a cost the game introduces new characters that are not interesting at all. Rachel for the most part is fine, but most of the new cast of characters are insignificant and it’s also worsened by the awkward voice acting too. (That’s a whole different story and I understand why different voice actors were hired for most of the original characters.)

I still think this game is worth your time especially for those that are fans of the series. If I could I’d give this game a neutral review because I don’t think it’s either good or bad. There’s an equal amount of good and jarring moments in the game, but it still has heart.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a game that makes you reflect on everyday actions and past events, and on or use of vices and triggers to feel preengaged. You face to think of many points of your life, and freedom - especially regarding the best and worst sides of them. Moreover, it shows what we are capable of, and what inspires us to show our most genuine emotion: love. All this effect that it provides is due to its beautiful story and to an interesting and innovative gameplay. Deck Nine Games was far from overcoming the original Life is Strange but created something memorable.

All the games of the series have sensational and exciting soundtracks. It's something from another world. In this title it could not be different, it's so well done that it even transits between various genres. Regarding the sound effects, they're great. Despite Chloe's dubbing being replaced, the new actress seems to have a lot to do with how beautiful this game came to be. It seems that she expresses a lot more feelings. The dubbing is sensational, of cinematographic quality.

With remarkable and fine characters, Life is Strange conquered a legion of fans that certainly won't be content with just five chapters. However, instead of receiving a continuation, Before the Storm arose to suppress doubts and tell in detail the Chloe Price saga, very controversial and dear to the series. This time, to adventure as the protagonist next to Rachel, the girl that mysteriously disappears in Life is Strange. “Awakening” introduces the game to the conflicts that led Chloe to turn into an arrogant and selfish person from the first game; She had to come to the death of her father, with Max abandoning her, and seeing her mother start a relationship with a man she despises. The protagonist grew that feeling of injustice and hate inside her. However, we can still see another facet of Chloe, an innocent and new Price, as we venture through this title.

Before the Storm is still Life is Strange in its form, essence, and immersion. The plot of Chloe and Rachel is not in the beginning, and you can expect great turnarounds in the next two chapters. An advantage of being a prequel, which makes that those who did not play Life is Strange can experience this game without feeling lost. The game meets expectations and answers questions that remained a mystery before it was put on display. I really couldn't be happier with what we've been given. Deck Nine gets Life is Strange, but more than that, it capitalizes on the material to make it even better. By the end of this first episode, I was not only awe-struck, but a little misty. Completely blown away by the sheer quantity and quality of the episodes. This is more than a love letter to all the fans — it's a brewing tempest of adolescent insight.

This game gets too much clout from the LiS fanbase. I'll admit it would have been nice to have the original voice cast (the timing was unfortunate), but otherwise I thought this was a pretty hella good preclude to LiS1. Other than the phenomenal soundtrack (Daughter was a good choice!), this game really shows how broken Chloe was and explains her behavior in LiS1. No, I'm not commending it, but especially the William scenes were extremely haunting for someone dealing with trauma. I was never a fan of Rachel's character since LiS1, so I'm glad it was made painfully obvious how manipulative she was in this. To me, this felt like a game where Chloe was struggling to find herself and meaningful relationships in her life. It's just a shame Rachel was not the positive influence she really needed. And I wish the fanbase would recognize this game for just that. And the final choice in the game, while not as heavy as LiS1 was, was an extremely personal decision we all have to make in our own lives. It wasn't climatic, but considering the theme that lead up to it, I felt that was an important step in Chloe's growth.

Is the game perfect? No. But it did satisfy me with a well-written backstory. And that's what's important to me. And that's why I recommend it. Look past the obvious flaws and experience it for a tale of a broken character finding solace in a (unbeknownst to her) covert narcissist. It's truly heartbreaking, and that's what Deck Nine really got right.

Dare I say that this prequel is better than the original game? I do. Not only was my love for Chloe in the first game reinforced by playing her in this installment, but getting to experience her relationship with Rachel Amber from the very beginning made Rachel's demise hurt that much more. It gave a new level of depth and complexity to a character who was just a name until now. Being able to flesh out Chloe's experiences at home and school both pre- and post-expulsion allowed for a new understanding of her struggles as a teenager who just lost her father. The soundtrack is even better than the original game, as well as the graphics and character designs. Overall 10/10, because I can't find a single thing wrong with this game and no one will convince me otherwise.

Rather than simply a LiS prequel, BtS feels more like a sister game. Softer and more understated than the original, BtS explores deeper storytelling, character development, and relationships. Not relying on a gimmick like time-travel makes the game feel more real and it plays out more like an interactive movie. Fans of the original game will appreciate the familiar setting and seeing new sides of many LiS characters. Of course, this deeper insight makes the events of LiS even more emotionally devastating, but it is worth it.

Lovely soundtrack, same beautiful world, and an all-around touching experience.

Life is strange: Before the storm is an amazing sequel...Actually prequel but whatever, to Life is strange.
The game explore the friendship, which soon develop into a relationship between Chloe and Rachel as they go through different events within their lives.

The game is far shorter than the original one with only 3 episodes but it doesn't fail to convey the same level of emotions as the first one as it carry on with the events.
Being a prequel, if you played the first game you know exactly how's it going to end and it is absolutely disheartening but it doesn't take away anything to the game as the desire to carry on never fade away while playing.

The ending scene is just too much to take for someone which grew a liking on both Rachel and Chloe for real, geez that phone ringing...

Powerful and disturbing. It’s not much of a “game” but this is a piece of interactive cinema with a gorgeous soundtrack. If you’re interested in this prequel, you probably already played ‘Life is Strange’... which means you’re going to spend half the time with a massive lump in your throat due to the foreshadowing. Watch out for that final moment after the credits roll: it’s a doozy.

Before the Storm’s greatest asset is how it builds a genuine relationship between its two leads, making you root for them and understand what they mean to each other as both their lives fall apart.

The tale takes place two years after the death of Chloe's father (and three years before she reconnects with Max). Chloe is testing her boundaries, sneaking out to concerts, and ditching school. It may be a cry for help, but it’s also the best way she can deal with her grief. Enter Rachel, a girl who seems like she has everything: She’s popular, gets good grades, and has an ever-present aura of confidence. Rachel is tired of it all, though; even if you seem to have it all, that doesn’t mean your life is perfect. The girls find each other at a time when they desperately need someone else to understand their struggles, and it’s a great reminder of how listening to someone can go a long way.

Great prequel
Immersive gameplay
Music and soundtracks 10/10

I had a great time playing this game.
I thought that it was a blessing to see who Cloie was more deeply as a person.

What I loved

 • The drama and character development in all 3 episodes
 • Knowing the back story of many characters (including Rachel)
 • The bonus episode was incredibly well made and heart breaking
 • Encapsulating the aesthetic and 'feel' of LiS 1

What they could have done better

 • #1 thing: They should have made it 5 episodes. Hear me out. They should have made an episode in between 1 & 2 going more in depth into Rachel as a character, and all of the other characters (like: Victoria, Samantha, Nathan, Juliet..etc.). They should have also made an episode after ep3, going into depth into why Rachel left Cloie and all the questions which led to the events that lead to LiS 1. As it stands right now I feel like there are just WAY too many unanswered questions.
 • Everything to do with Elliot, appearing out of nowhere and.. wtf was that scene all about??
 • Rachel has powers?

Even though this game is not perfect, I really enjoyed myself and I treat this game as canon :)

Life Is Strange was a unique but well-made game that took the Telltale Games' formula and improved on it to make an amazing experience, but its major accomplishments feel unique to the point that a return to the same game could never live up to the original.

At the same time, prequels can be extremely hard to pull off. It’s worse when the story is the key component of the game, and players already know the results of the character’s arcs. Yet Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is a prequel that tries to do just that and seems to succeed.

Life Is Strange: Before The Storm revolves around Chloe, Max’s friend from the original Life is Strange. In Life Is Strange, Chloe is a punk dropout of a prestigious academy, and much of the game revolves around Chloe and Max. In addition, there’s a missing girl known as Rachel Amber, who is unseen and unknown though Life Is Strange does explore and explain her disappearance.

Choosing to feature Chloe as the protagonist and Rachel as a major character seems like a poor choice as the destination of both characters can only be the beginning of the former game, and both characters are pretty well defined there. Yet Deck Nine took the challenging task of exploring both characters and has produced something unique.

Chloe has been rolled back into a pre-punk, while Chloe is the rebellious type, she still attends the academy at the beginning. In addition, other characters who will appear in Life Is Strange to have small arcs that will play out, such as Chloe’s mom dating a man named David, who later will become Chloe’s Stepfather in Life Is Strange.

Deck Nine takes the time to examine each character and develop them. Rather than just accept the original game as a hard canon, most characters are explored from a different angle. Max from the first game will see many characters through her lens, but Chloe with an anti-authority mentality will see many of the same characters differently, and that makes the journey in Life Is Strange: Before the Storm particularly poignant. It’s not just that players are revisiting the same characters, but rather we’re seeing the entire world through a different view with neither character’s subjective interpretations being treated as fact.

There are a few new characters in Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, but the most important is Rachel Amber as she is a major plot point in the original game even though she never appears. Now given a chance to shine in Life Is Strange, Rachel becomes the core of the story. Life Is Strange: Before the Storm is fully about Chloe Price and Rachel Amber, and their relationship.

Though I use the word relationship to be all-encompassing. In the beginning, Chloe Price knows of Rachel Amber but meets her for the first time when she saves Chloe from a pair of angry gentlemen. From there, while much of Life Is Strange: Before the Storm explores Chloe’s life, Rachel remains a major part of it, and the two girls’ adventures are what keeps the player’s attention.

Chloe and Rachel’s relationship is up to the player to guide as well. There are numerous ways the story can go with slight bends each way, and players are given the chance to play out and see how their choices guide both characters.

A major difference between Life Is Strange and Before the Storm is that Max’s power to rewind time is missing. Players no longer can check out multiple results of their choices, so each choice becomes a little more important, but also choices can matter more. There are several simple but important choices but there are also hidden values so, over time, Chloe and Rachel’s relationship will slowly move towards different levels.

None of this is done poorly though, Chloe talks and acts like a teenager would, avoiding simplistic dialog, but also skipping many of the overwritten messes that authors can get into when they forget their characters are reacting to real events playing out in front of them, rather than coming up with comebacks that sound rehearsed and researched.

The dialogue and conversation are so natural in Life Is Strange: Before The Storm, as I guided my characters into a romantic relationship that it was only after about half the game was over that I suddenly realized I was playing a game that appeared to focus heavily on a lesbian romance. A lesbian romance that was neither required as part of the story nor felt forced into being. Calling it a romance feels incorrect, just due to how often romantic stories are so poorly written. Life Is Strange: Before The Storm tells a better story, mostly in that it has so much to talk about and explore, even as it focuses on one core relationship.

There are other meaningful choices. None of which will change how the original game’s story fits with this piece, but instead how major moments occur or if certain events happen. The final scene has a major decision tree, and in fact, my final scene felt empty and wrong in a way that I wasn’t expecting. I checked it out online and I had failed a dialogue test, where I missed some hidden score. Normally this upsets me because it would require the player to replay the entire game to get an alternate ending but here, the scene before the finale was all that decided which way the game ended, and yet it’s more complex than a simple choice, which makes the experience feel better.

So Life is Strange: Before the Storm is an excellent story, and it would have to be with the focus on it. Outside of the story though, the rest of the game is serviceable, and the big change is that instead of Max’s rewind power in the original game, Chloe has a “debate” mechanic that is left lacking.

The debates in Life Is Strange: Before The Storm focuses completely on matching word choice, or clever retorts rather than making important and salient points. There are usually even two choices that are correct and one wrong choice, but the experience of the debates just feels off, compared to the rest of the game as the game throws a timed response into the mix, but even entering the debates is a choice.

In fact with the loss of the rewind power, Life Is Strange: Before The Storm is searching for a feature that can impress the audience. A well-written story is a strong piece of the experience, but Life Is Strange: Before The Storm becomes the typical storybook game for its genre, though with writing that will make the player take notice. However, after such a strong first game, Before the Storm can’t live up to expectations.

That doesn’t make Life Is Strange: Before the Storm a bad game, it’s just a step or two behind the previous title. If you enjoyed Life Is Strange, the sequel, Before the Storm is a must-play, but if someone disliked Life Is Strange, they won’t find anything new or unique here.

I give Life Is Strange: Before The Storm a

8/10

Even if you know how it all plays out in the main game... worth playing to flesh out the world and familiar characters. I personally found it rough getting past the first bit of episode one, but really opens up and becomes compelling when you reach Blackwell and interact with all the things.

P.S.
Ignore and do not hug Eliot! Man needs to be shunned til the end of time!
I should start by saying that I am a huge fan of Life is Strange. I loved the game and was completely captivated by the characters.

So, I had high expectations for Before the Storm. While I have enjoyed learning more about the events leading up to Life is Strange, I do not think that Before the Storm is nearly as good. It is a very passive game, with a high percentage of cut scenes. Game-play consists of you watching, watching, and watching. Then, interacting a bit, and watching some more. This is in direct contrast to the original Life is Strange where I felt like an active participant throughout the entire story.

The other major difference is that (unlike Max), Chloe is a hard character to connect with. I get that she has had some rough breaks but her persona is so manipulative and self destructive that her antics become painful to watch at times. Her sidekick, Rachel, is also hard to like.

Before the Storm is built with a different engine and the controls are improved. Actions are associated with buttons or keys rather than having to select and drag (as in the original game). Instead of photos, achievements are earned by tagging items with graffiti. There is a new 'verbal challenge' mode during which Chloe attempts to overpower others with words.

Like the first game, chapters can be restarted from checkpoints which makes the retrieval of missed collectibles very easy. The tradition of excellent art, music, and voice acting continues in this prequel.

I would recommend Before the Storm only to fans of Life is Strange who are looking for a return to Arcadia Bay and a revisit with familiar faces. Had I played Before the Storm first, I might not have been inclined to play the original game and would have missed its magic.

I have no words to describe the story / game!
If you played Life is Strange, you have to play this game, because it clarifies everything + I definitely recommend the bonus episode (it's very emotional)
The story can be so real, except for the small details, without which it would not be a game

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is the 3-episode prequel of Life is Strange (2015), with a bonus episode where you play as the child Max. In the main episodes (ep 1-3), you play as Chloe, the second main character from the main installment and a troubled teenager, to get to know Rachel by accident, who is a straight-A student and most popular girl in school and later becomes Chloe’s BFF and
some sort of first love.
You don’t need any knowledge of the main installment, but if you do, you will get more understanding of both stories.

It’s been years since I played Life is Strange. I only have a vague memory of the story so I can’t make an effective comparison between the two, but I remember back then I like the story but I was not impressed by the game, due to a lack of playability as a narrative game. That was me at that time, after several years and played much more games, I became much more tolerant about “playability” and learned to appreciate different types of games. Nevertheless, this type of game picks its audience, and it is safe to assume not everyone will like it for what it is.

Back to the game itself, it is a story-driven game and gameplay is exactly the same as before. You pick choices, walk around and interact with items and environments, solve a few very very light puzzles and that it is. You either be okay with it or dislike this kind of gameplay, however, the main focus of the game is always the story.

Speaking of the story, it is a hit and miss. It is well crafted in setting up why Chloe is so empathetic towards Rachel and Chloe‘s feelings of loss and sorrow are very genuine and impressive. But as for another main character, Rachel, is not well established and did not reach the same level of characterizing as Chloe. I feel like she is merely a confused teenager who wants to try something new and a weak character far from being likable. Because lacking the setup of Rachel’s motivation of being friends with Chloe and relevant plots to fully develop this character, the emotional exchange between the two feels one-way. Chloe is always giving but Rachel never gives anything in return which is more like manipulating. Besides this character, I find some plots are unreasonable, like Chloe breaking into the DA’s office and destroying evidence yet never suffered any consequences. In this scenario, players know it is a silly move but have to do what the criminal asked in order to proceed and that feels like forcing. Also, I find it hard to believe a teenager would go unprepared (she only happened to pick up a knife after arrival) to meet a guy whom she knew is dangerous solely. They are probably for the sake of adding more playable sessions and moving the story smoothly, but their rationality is hard to justify.

This game is a long game, and I mean long as of feeling so long. Usually I am very tolerant about slow-paced games, yet for episode 1 and some parts of episode 2, this game is just in the next level of painfully slow. I know this game is supposed to be slow and kind of laid back, still, pacing in these sessions is quite messed up, as they lack meaningful ups and downs to keep players engaging. There are also too many scenery shots for its own good. They are good-looking for sure, yet they do not do a good job in setting up the mood and atmosphere but further drag down the pacing. As for writing, most are okay, however, there are some cringey and unnatural dialogues that felt like I was watching teenager drama on American CW channel. Some are also too explicit and thus become cheesy. I would appreciate a little more implicit like conversations between Chloe and her dad, even dialogues that are meant for teenage roles should be more implicit since implication can be a beauty and players are perfectly capable of figuring these out.

For others, music is good but lacks some truly memorable soundtracks (music is kind of essential for this type of game). A few cutscenes were not well animated. Some voice acting of supporting roles are, I don’t know they are bad or not, just strange. Particularly, there’s a long session in episode 3 where every voice actor/actress tried to imitate sorrow and the way they did it sounds very odd.

I waived a lot about giving this game a positive or negative because the story itself is so beautiful and when it clicks, it works like a charm. Eventually I decided to go with a no because it is just not that good for having too many flaws I can count, but if you enjoy it, I am happy for you.

Once more a Life Is Strange game has left me with conflicting emotions. While there is no doubt in my subjective opinion that this game earns its massive up, this game could easily have cemented itself as the top romance, drama, & adventure game of all time in my library, if it wasn’t for the fact that it is held back for being a damned prequel. Since the experience of this game is heavily tied to story/plot, my further gushing and raving will be mostly in spoiler tag. In short; Before the Storm > Life is Strange, Chloe x Rachel > Chloe x Max, atmosphere of Anger & Passion> atmosphere of Sadness & Depression, fuck David, Chloe Price is my new favorite video game protagonist and I will probably buy any game that has a similar main character.

Hella Anger, Hella Passion!
So, the original LiS nailed sadness and was one of the first video games to make me cry. Which emotion did Before the Storm embody? I already gave it away in the headline, anger. Both intentionally and I believe unintentionally. Chloe’s anger along with the injustices that comes with being a teenager in one of the most unfair and unequal western countries is a constant undercurrent running through the game, but anger is a burning emotion… so while the original had trouble moving from the sad and depressing, Before the Storm has an easier time occasionally moving into happiness and a passionate puppy-love between our adorkable punk and the mysterious Rachel.
And damn, does Chloe have reasons to be furious. She is already a highly emotional individual, and even skipping the fact that her dad died two years ago, her mother is dating one of the worst kinds of people one can date while you still have a kid at home. David is disrespectful, “who is trying his best” which is a lie, because he needs to be in therapy, and he turns aggressive and physically threatening if he isn’t being respected… by a damn teenager. He has no respect for the rights of others and believes that doing one tiny little gesture of good faith means you should ignore him acting like an entitled little brat. If you relate to David at all in your interaction with young people -or god forbid your own kids- please remember to wear a condom. Maybe even get a vasectomy or the tubes tied.
Oh, and let us not forget her mom absolutely betraying her. Of course, not by screwing a new man, she’s entitled to that part like anyone. She is aware of David’s condescending bullshit, witnessing him being verbally and physically threatening towards Chloe and she excuses it by him being “old fashioned”. When the hell did you get a free arsehole pass just by claiming you were “old fashioned”? And what does she do? Draw a line, tell him to get his head out of his arse, Chloe isn’t his kid and he has no right to treat her like shit or make rules for her? No, she actively encourages it. Which makes me lose any respect for that shitty, shitty mom.
There’s a 52-48 chance, I am disappointed in YOU!
Now let us talk ending. One of the easiest choices in video game history, so why the hell did less than fifty percent pick the only option that can be morally defended? Let’s be clear, Rachel’s dad is not a good guy. He is a liar, elitist, classist, downright childish in his views on the world, and corrupt. (By the way, turning Lawyers into Politicians sounds like a really dumb and damaging system…) Nothing Chloe does can give Rachel a good, loving father, because she has a lying arse, who much like David-the-asshat, defends his bad behavior by trying to do the best he can. Though in David’s defense, unlike Rachel’s dad, he isn’t revealed to be a sick criminal on top of being an arse. So, with that being the case… WHY THE HELL DOES THE MAJORITY OF PLAYTHROUGHS HAVE PEOPLE CHOSING TO BE A LYING SHIT TO THEIR GIRLFRIEND?! FOR THE KICKS?! Does people really follow the idea that “Oh no, it isn’t the obviously harmful actions that is the problem. It is people find out about it.” “The problem isn’t you dad cheating on your mom, it is you telling your mom you saw him plough his assistant.” “The problem isn’t the government illegally spying on its citizens and spreading nudes around the office for fun. It is those damn whistleblowers.” “The problem isn’t people being racists. It is you calling them racist.”… Or in this specific case. “The problem isn’t your dad injecting drugs into a woman against her will. It is your girlfriend telling you about it.” Fuck off with that shit, the arsehole should be in prison not just have his daughter be mad at him. Too many people believe lying is beneficial and it makes me sad...
Prequel:
It has to be said though, this game suffers for being a prequel for a variety of reasons. 1) It changes the way you make choices, because you know for instance that Nathan is a monster. You may still save the freak from being bullied, but you will tell the girls to give up on him, even if it otherwise goes against your moral compass. 2) It is infuriating knowing what will happen to the main characters afterwards. 3) Rather than ending a bit earlier on a much better note, it just has to end with a reference to what happens in the next game. (I hope someone pees in the cereal of everyone who ok’d that last decision, because it limits the fun factor of replaying this as a standalone)
High speed emotions. High speed love
Okay, but onto happier parts. I am a sucker for adorkable gay fluff. And sure, Rachel and Chloe’s relationship are like, Disney levels of fast, maybe even Shakespearean levels of fast. But Chloe is an emotional girl, and I can totally buy she is the kinda girl who falls in love with someone at a party and falls hard. I saw plenty of people having rollercoaster relationships over days or weeks. Unfortunately, I didn’t experience it myself, but it feels totally in character. On a sidenote. I would totally buy a game where that part was the focus, just a romance with two dumb gay kids getting into teen drama and ending up with them driving off in a car. Rachel and Chloe have so much chemistry, and they feel much more evenly matched than Max and Chloe.
Wonderful experience. Very personal, sensitive, sincere, real, perfect in its imperfection, alive..

As a prequel to original Life is Strange, Before the Storm is hella awesome!

I adore alive, compelling characters. Chloe and Rachel made me believe in their story.
System of choices gave me the chance to build relationships between them. And I don't want to know how choices doesn't matter or how they matter. My story remains and there will be no other story or choice.. Just like in life. This way it is even more real to me

Visuals are brilliant. Huge respect for coming out with such level using Unity game engine. Graphics is imperfect (this is why we are having remaster this year), but it becomes meaningless very soon. I can't express how much I adore light in this game, it creates stunning and unique atmosphere. Camera is another hidden gem: I took more than 230 screenshots, since game knows how to present itself.

Music is another helper in creating overall mood. Also phone with messages, journal with thoughts, collection of silly graffities..
All these small pieces fit together and create a wonderful experience. I'm super grateful for having this journey in my life.

Also this game made me quit pirating videogames once and for all.
Also community of this game is fucking charming.
Thank you, Deck Nine <3

Masterpiece way to storytelling.
Bonus episode must be played, it is so important to see Life is Strange 1 and Before the Strorm as One.
Bonus episode gets 10/10!
Game has 3 episodes + 1 little bonus episode.
First minutes starts so slow but with the start of Ep.2 it's massively increasing speed trough to top.
With the end of final Episode your hearthbeats go crazy, you wanna go back to Season 1 and play it again.
I wanna celebrate DeckNine for great job, feeling as Chloe, staying loyal to season 1 and most importantly discovering Rachel Amber makes this game very unique for the story.
I totally missed that feeling of last scene shocks from episodic games.
After years with this title, ending of some episodes shocked me for real and I felt really exicited for story.
Pacing in the story was amazing.
If you liked first Life is Strange game you can't skip this one. (Not played 2nd game yet. Cause there are no Chloe and Max)
If we do little comparison between 1st one and Before the Storm:
Dontnod's game got visiualy looks better, your Chracter's control is much more thanks to Max's superpower.
DeckNine's game is very loyal to original universe, and got much better side chracters. You can feel emotions deeply.
At the end of review I want to say this brand is very important for storytelling games. In these days like we're not seeing really much games with story based or with quality story. But when you play games like Life is Strange you can both easily rest and both can enjoy a great styled game.
Have peace brothers & sisters!

Id first like to say, that the Life is strange story line, was amazing.. its brilliantly crafted, and the story arch are awesome. i personally played Before the storm, then i played Life is strange, because i wanted to play in chronological order. with that said, (and this is nothing more then an opinion, im just letting this be known)
if you intend to play this game, and your Like me and love story rich games, Prepare yourself.... it covers heavy subjects of grief, getting over betrayal, and fear of being forgotten. Many in which is highly Relatable when i played this story line. after playing the story, i was effected for weeks and longer but it was a state of awe on just how good this story was. i personally connected most to the Chloe Price story line, as iv had a similar experience, in terms of loss and all in all fell in love with this story
Ranting about the story aside, this game has an Amazing feel to it, with little to no bugs or technical issues, from the story to the technical side is a 10/10 i hope they continue making art

I just finished the game and it was a amazing! Picked it up on a steam sale for dirt cheap. Would recommend buying deluxe edition for the bonus episode. For those who don't know everything that happens in this game are the events that occurred before Life is Strange. The graphics are good and could easily run on a potato pc. The story is amazing and really pulls you in and the characters are very good and makes you feel for them. This game is an emotional masterpiece. If you enjoyed the 1st Life is Strange please do yourself a favor and buy this. 10/10 , one of my favorite games.

Developer Deck Nine Games (founded 1997 under Idol Minds, Pain 2007 PS3, PS4)

You have 3 Episodes + 1 Bonus (Farewell if you bought Deluxe Version)

Episode 1 Awaking is showing the beginning of Chloe & Rachel Start of Adventures that Ends in a

Episode 2 is even better. The Tempest is if you make it right, really amazing. Sadly they dont go to an Aftershow Party first to have a bit Contact with other Students.

Episode 3 is Final Decession is really hard thing.

Bonus Chapter is short but nice & really very sad (poor Chloe)

Really very good game.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is incredible and magical as it should be. It delivers on its promise of a captivating story that brings humanity to the idea of presumably senseless teen angst. It is a journey that explores the themes of loss, love, finding one's self, and whether the road to happiness ultimately lies in truth.

This one is pretty good, but it's nowhere near as good as the original. There are two main reasons really for this; the first reason is that Chloe's voice actor was completely changed, and it's extremely jarring. The new voice actor is good, but she's not the Chloe we know and it feels wrong. The other thing is that we've been used to using the time travel mechanics along with meaningful choices, with a sense of unknown and experimentation.

In this game, sadly, the future is written before you've even begun. You already know how it's going to end. That in itself kills some level of the enjoyment, and without the time travel quirks, there is some level of gameplay depth that feels removed. In exchange Chloe does have her own unique quirks, but fundementally this game is carried by the strength of the writing and characters alone - which are very good like Life is Strange, but the pieces aren't all quite there in the same way.

Overall if you wanted more Life is Strange, this is a great game to play - but don't expect an experience of the same level as the original, and don't expect any serious twists.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a three part standalone story adventure game from Deck Nine.
It is a prequel to Life is Strange which takes place 3 years before the events of the first game.
This time you step into the role of Chloe Price, a rebel who forms an unlikely friendship with Rachel Amber.
Since you are Chloe this time and Max is not around yet there is no time rewind feature. As Chloe you have a Backtalk mechanic. You have to listen to what people say and use snarky comments to convince someone or make them give up...
There are again a lot of difficult decisions with (mostly) satisfying consequences.
There is also a bonus episode with Max and Chloe, where they are kids.
Like in the original game there is again amazing music.
Voice acting is great, Chloe has a different voice actor but she is great too.
The graphics have slightly improved.
If you liked the original you will like Before the Storm too. It is also emotional, dramatic and heartouching. Highly recommended!

Sounds 10/10
Graphics 9/10
Gameplay 8/10
Atmosphere 10/10

I don't know, it is kinda sad

As it was with the original game, I don’t have any idea why am I writing a review for this game.

For the people who didn’t like LiS it wouldn’t make much sense to try the prequel. It is technically true to claim that Before the Storm can be enjoyed as a self-sufficient story, but almost the entire introduction to the game is made in the way that it’s assumed player knows about Arcadia Bay and its residents.

And, well, for the people who liked LiS, this game has to be played no matter what. Before the Storm takes a deep look into the premise of the original story and gives the opportunity to people to better understand the Arcadia Bay world and, mainly, the story characters. Not only that, I would dare to say it has quite a power to recontextualize the events of the original game and maybe even turn 180 degrees your attitude towards the main characters.

I could stop right here and, depending on what type of those two you belong, either yeet you off the store page or shove your money into the monitor. But before that I would like to take some time to appreciate some things in game.

First of all, I can’t stop admiring both games’ soundtrack. Before the Storm has as strong (if not stronger) soundtrack collection and original score as it was in the first game. Taking main menu themes as an example, prequel’s score gets an electro guitar track, highlighting punk theme, yet at the same time it remains as calm and melancholic as in the original. And reading first pages of Chloe’s diary under the melody in the pause menu made me shed some tears again, as it was with Max’s back then. The soundtrack is either very touching or catchy in this game.

The second thing I can at least appreciate is the backtalk mechanic. While previous’ game special mechanic was time rewind, here Chloe has the ability to enter the word battles with people. The dialogues get divided on several sections and you have to pick one of three dialogue options to properly counter opponent’s attack or argument in a very short time limit. The backtalk suffers from the absence of consequence in most cases (because there is no time rewind this time yet the story always has to progress) and the lacking answer description. But in the end, with proper narrative, small margin for errors and good acting, it managed to create a lot of very high-tension moments for me.

The third, the smallest point, is the technical part. I had a lot of troubles with LiS: collision issues, lips not moving on characters, huge FPS drops, even occasional softlock states. And while prequel was still entertaining me with T-posing characters rarely, there were smooth 60 fps and near-perfect playthrough without bugs breaking the immersion.

The final thing is Chloe and Rachel, the main duo. As I’ve mentioned earlier, Before the Storm may recontextualize some of the events or characters from the original. And this mainly concerns Chloe. It is very subjective, but I think the majority of people will sympathize to the character much more after completing the game because they will better understand how did the life look like for her and what did she have to come through in her teenage years. And I cannot possibly ignore the presence of Rachel here. Before the Storm finally gives you the opportunity to see “what was that fuss all about” in LiS. And oh boy, it really wasn’t for naught. While I may not adore her, I cannot deny that Rachel is a complex character that looks like Mary Sue yet never feels fake. Before the Storm creates the false impression that people on your screen are real persons, and I do not hyperbolize. Deck Nine honestly made much better work with dialogues and writing than Dontnod in their time imo.

In the end, Before the Storm feels like a more consistent and strong piece of media rather than LiS. And that’s kinda sad. Sad because this game is a prequel, therefore, no matter your choices and decisions there, the outcome would always be the same. I really wish how could LiS look like, were they writing it. Nonetheless, the decision about game’s purchase is very simple:
• Haven’t played LiS? Go and play it first.
• Haven’t enjoyed LiS? Just skip this game and move on.
• Have enjoyed LiS? Well, hop in for another ride around Arcadia Bay.

Before the Storm is a great prequel that manages to capture the essence of what Life is Strange is. With great characters, a beautiful story, the typical atmosphere and fantastic music this installment sometimes even surpasses the first game.i would highly recommend to play this first, before playing life is strange 1.

I'm a 42-yo man and I cry every time I play any LiS and this game in particular.
No other game series can squeeze my heart this hard.
This drama genre I respect more than most of others stupid AAA beating/shooting genres in video game industry. Drama reminds us that we are humans, not bloody animals. Reminds us about compassion and empathy.

Before the storm. The one who sows the wind ... An incredibly exciting and touching story. The story of two teenage friends Chloe and Rachel.Lost generation. Behind a fake family.Behind the smiles of thousands of moms and dads. They see a future that they don't have. They never got respect, never got a fair trial. Nobody cares about them as long as they smile. But they don't want to live like their mothers. They don't want to let fear rule their lives. They don't want to live like their fathers who worked so hard that they broke down. They don't want to give up while they are alive. They will never accept the shackles that they are trying to put on. All they have is themselves. They have always been together and always will be. Someday they will create their own paradise. They deserve it.

Story : Very sad, very intense, get ready for depression 101

Series Timeline : Best to play this title before the first Life is Strange

Difficulty : Only difficult part is making the tough choices and stopping the tears from flowing

Audience : Late Teens & older

Graphics : Unique Art Style.

Audio : Sounds are so good, music amazing, and some scenes the sound is downright soul piercing with emotion.

PC Requirements : Medium PC should handle this game no problem

Grind : Zero grind, game is very short. Quality over quantity.

Game Length : Very Short, completed in 12 hours and i played slowly.

Bugs : Only 1 small bug where some voice instances will cut short on the last word.

Price : A must on special, but this game is so good it even deserves full price.

It's the second game I've ever cried over. The first one was the Walking Dead by Telltale. Neither has amazing graphics(literally the graphics are terrible compared to contemporary games) but both moved me to tears. Games with better graphics like GTA V or the Witcher III, however, failed to move me that much. Good graphics don't touch people, but good stories do.

Any individual who played the first Life is Strange will know exactly the amount of an effect Rachel Amber had on Arcadia Bay. From the missing banners splattered all over town to how she hung like the Ghost of Christmas Past over Chloe. Due to all that it was valiant for engineer Deck Nine to manufacture a prequel arrangement called Life is Strange: Before the Storm, that would clarify exactly what made her character so extraordinary.

Generally speaking however, anybody with an unclear enthusiasm for Life is Strange deserves to play Before the Storm. Deck Nine has made a prequel arrangement that is more than qualified to be a piece of Life is Strange's greater entire, and by forgetting about practically the entirety of the powerful components to concentrate on the relationship that works among Rachel and Chloe, and how it changes both their lives, it causes the whole experience to feel further and more human than the first arrangement.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is confirmation that acceptable prequels don't simply broaden the climate of what fans cherished about its ancestor, yet supplement each other.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a story adventure game where you play as Chloe Price, three years before the events of Life is Strange. The gameplay and graphics are pretty much the same as before (no rewind powers this time) with a few new additions, such as the backtalk where you use arguments and insults towards someone to get him/her do what you want.

I played the first game almost four years ago and I didn’t like it very much; most of the songs were bad, weak dialogue choices (oh, and that awful “final choice”), cringe teen drama, so much filler and Alex was just a boring character. With that being said, the story, some of the characters and graphics were pretty good.

During the last Steam Winter Sale event, I looked at the reviews of the game that my friends and other people wrote and they said that the game had excellent writing, “phenomenal” story, more fleshed out characters and basically it was for “everyone” and “not catered for teens”. It was $3 back then and thought that I should give it another shot.

Pros:

✔️ Alright story: Despite the issues that I will be mentioning later, the story was fine and it managed to keep me engaged till the end. You will also know more about Chloe and her struggles before the events of the first game, and to be honest that was the only thing that I cared about.
✔️ Some interesting characters: I liked Chloe from the first game and I still like her here, and you will meet other interesting characters, new and familiar, like Frank, Steph and Mickey.
✔️ Better soundtrack: The songs are so much better now, and I just LOVE the menu music, it’s calm, relaxing and just a damn beautiful song to listen to.
✔️ Nice graphics: Like the first game, the character models and environments look pretty good with its unique art style.

Cons:

A lot of flaws in the story: There were some scenes in the game where they made me laugh unintentionally or scream at my damn screen for how stupid they were. There were so many plotholes in the story (especially in the third episode) that were left unanswered at the end and the game tried its best to bury them.
Rachel: I do not like this character; she is an idiot and an awful person, and her voice doesn’t match her character. The game tried to make me like her but I just couldn't stand her.
Bad writing: I don’t care what the other reviews say, this game is catered for teens and teens only; annoying jokes, uninteresting teen drama and dialogue choices that will make you squint your eyes and cringe.
Confusing dialogue choices: You will be making a lot of decisions and choices in the game. Some of them are tough, but most won't matter at the end and I am okay with that, it is just that some choices have a different meaning when picked, and there are some places where you think you have to make a decision, but it turns out you won’t and the scene just continues.
Poor voice acting: Aside from Chloe and few other characters, there are people that are just reading their lines like robots. Also, Is it just me or is everyone talking in a slow pace (even Chloe)? It’s like I accidentally opened a YouTube video with a playback speed of 0.75.
Awful facial animations: A lot of characters have poker faces and show no emotion at all, you just can’t tell what emotion they are expressing. In addition, the lip sync is off sometimes, same goes for lip movement.

Final Thoughts

To sum this up, I am too old for this game. I understand why a lot of people like this franchise and I don't judge them for that, but at least in Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season One I connected more with the story and its characters as they had detailed facial expressions and body gestures, far better writing and voice acting, and drama that I actually cared about.

I admit that the game has a good story, some interesting characters and a good soundtrack, but they are buried behind a wall of cringe writing, awful facial animation, poor voice acting and teen drama that I just can't relate with. However, I'm glad that it introduced me to the fantastic menu music which is now one of my favorites.

i used to think chloe price was shallow and cringe. i didn't consider buying this for a few weeks but changed my mind afterwards, def having no high expectations. i wasn't a huge fan of her, and believed she was not worth it.
i was utterly wrong.
though the first game is special for a lot of us, LIS: BTS is something else. the friendship, the love, character & relationship developments... EVERYTHING was there.
for the first time in a LIS game, i laughed so much, all thanks to chloe. i felt the love rachel and chloe have for each other. i felt
the pain of losing rachel and chloe (i picked sacrificing chloe in the first one) specifically while watching the last cutscenes of BTS
. i felt all these [and much more] as the game progressed.
becoming a part of chloe's life was precious and moving.
if you're not sure about buying this for whatever reason, wait for a discount if you want BUT PLAY IT.

It's a game that so admirably and genuinely builds a relationship between two girls who absolutely need and deserve each other; when it gets to the ugly business of reminding you where it ends, it sours and saddens every moment. You could use your choices to keep Rachel at a bit of distance, but even that distance feels unfair, because why wouldn't both girls deserve their momentary bliss?

Still, Before The Storm's main three episodes largely play out as though the future isn't set in stone, allowing you to craft something resembling a momentary win for an ill-fated relationship, entertaining the notions of coping and vulnerability in ways very few games typically have time or inclination to. The bittersweet cherry on top, however, is contained in the game's Deluxe Edition, a final episode that allows you to play through Max and Chloe's last beautiful day together before Max leaves for Seattle. It's light, whimsical, often funny, and bathed in a gentle golden nostalgia. And once again, its final moments bring truth rushing in, and it's a stab in the heart.

This, apparently, is the heartbreaking joy that is Life Is Strange: the inevitability that life will do terrible, unexpected things to people whose presence we love, and people who absolutely deserve better. Developer Deck Nine's contribution through Before the Storm posits that the pain is still worth it; just to have the time at all is enough. A storm is still coming to Arcadia Bay, and Rachel will still disappear one day, and it doesn't matter. Being able to spend time with Chloe when her heart is at its lightest, and putting in the work to keep it going, is powerful and worthwhile.

The most boring experience I've had in a while. The story was supposed to expand Chloe's character from a different side, make her more likeable and get to know who's that famous Rachel she was talking about all the time, but the game does exactly the opposite. Characters are boring, dialogues are cringy and the story is not engaging at all aside from cheap cliffhangers at the end of episodes that you have to suffer through for a couple of hours of unbearable character writing and filler objectives that don't add anything to the story but take your precious time. I know it's a high school teenage drama, but even by its genre's standards, it could've been a much better story than it is now.

I know it's a story-driven game and outstanding graphics and animations are not the priority here. But FFS, why do characters look and act like robots with zero acting abilities? Actors were either underpaid or undercast. Chloe's thousand-yard-stare during conversations with barely any facial animations looks creepier than Disneyland animatronics. I get it, the budget is tight, but it wouldn't have cost you a fortune to animate the eyes a little bit better and hire a better writer, would it? And it would make a hella big difference.

Chloe does not deserve anything that happened to her. She lost her father and her best friend practically on the same day. When she met Rachel, her life changed for the better and she became happy again. I wish we knew how Rachel got with Frank and the events that led up to Jefferson manipulating Nathan and the dark room. Overall, it is a beautiful game with a beautiful storyline. 10/10 would recommend period.

The game lived up to its predecessors expectations. The game was overall fantastic and I preferred actually t LIS: BTS than LIS. All the negatives I wrote on my Life is Strange episodes seemed vanished, as the game lived up to my high expectations. It's a shame you can't turn back time as that was the main mechanic behind the first game, and instead of taking harmless pictures you vandalise your neighbourhood by graffitiing (cause you play as Chloe) but overall the game was amazing, and I highly recommend it.

Must have for 'Live is Strange' fans

.... new players: beware!

If you're new to the Life is Strange franchise then this is really not for you. Instead start with the main Life is Strange game itself, then come back to this one after you've finished the first.

Why?

'Before the Storm' tells the story of what took place before Max met up with Chloe again in the main game, and it does an amazing job too. It's really nice to visit Chloe's house again but this time seeing how it all got started. Yah, that's the problem I addresses above: if you're new then none of this will make sense to you and that could hurt your game.

Because in all fairness: a large part of the experience comes from reliving some cool moments from the first LiS game.

If you played LiS and want to play more and learn more about the characters then this is the perfect game for you!

Pros:
The game feels very authentic.
The characters are well written and believable.
The game makes no apologies about adult themes pertaining to coming of age (drugs, self destructive behavior etc.)
The artwork is immaculate. The game is extremely immersive and believable. Graphic design team did an amazing job at creating clutter, junk and dirt. Everything feels messy, but not in a bad way.

Cons:
It was hard for me to follow Chloe, who is an emotional teenager. She is believable, but quite frankly annoying.
Chloe's game mechanic is lame as hell compared to Max's from the first game.
Writing is not as powerful as the first game. The suicide scene on the school roof fucked me up big time. This game did not have moments like that.
Music is not as gripping. It is punk themed, which is appropriate, since Chloe's theme is resentment and isolation, as opposed to Max's which is guilt and nostalgia. It just didn't connect with me as well as the first one.

Overall, it is still an excellent game. It is entirely carried by the voice acting and artwork. It just feels weaker in the shadow of the original.
