A Surprisingly Strong & Satisfying Magic School Experience
Confession: When I first bought this game several years ago, I was not impressed. I may have had some preconceived expectation, or I may have been slightly frustrated that certain points of the MC's personality/background were predecided. Whatever the case, I am so glad I returned to this game. It has brightened up my last few days. Story: You play as a 16-year-old female 'wildseed', an individual born to non-magical parents who has the chance to be a witch. You can choose a name and general appearance for your character but there will be some aspects of her personality/background that will always remain the same. For instance, she will always show an interest in athletics even if you want to be a bookish nerd, and she will always claim she 'never wanted to be a goth'. I will admit that last part is one that put me off quite a bit originally. Yet this should be taken as a minor complaint as the choices you make throughout the year can lead her along different tracks of development. There are various other characters with their own personalities, secrets, and nuances. I've seen the suggestion in negative reviews that these are flat characters. I don't agree. By spending time with them and paying attention, it's possible to see where each of their depths lie. Having said that, there are a few side-characters you won't get enough of a handle on. Considering the amount of content in the game, this does not surprise me. Iris Academy and the fantasy backdrop it exists in involves a great deal of parody and allusions to both fictional magic and non-fictional pagan ideas. Yet the story universe manages to remain fresh and unique. I found myself wishing to know more about the lore, yet not becoming bitter about what would have to remain up to my imagination. Overall, the stories involved can be goofy, heart-warming, and even quite disturbing. I still haven't discovered everything there is to know, and I'll be jumping back into this shortly. I'm more than curious to find out where other paths will lead me. Gameplay: This game is a mix of visual novel and time/skill management. Luckily, it doesn't have the same problem with grinding as you see in some of these games unless you are going for specific achievements. You choose what classes your MC takes, when she rests, when she studies, etc. Throughout the school year, you will be given practical exams in the school dungeons. For these, you should use the spells you have learned in class. There are multiple ways you can complete the exams, the chance to earn extra marks, and also the possibility of failure. Besides the academic side of your experience, you can make (and lose) friends and romantic interests through your decisions in story scenarios. Art & Music: I turned the background music off. I enjoyed the sound effects, yet the BGM was far too distracting. The art-style for Magical Diary is adorable. There is a pleasant-looking user interface coupled with well-drawn characters and backgrounds, and a font that I consider easy to read. I could see why people might view the style as childish or too 'girly', but I found it relaxing. I'm not an artist, and I don't have a lot of knowledge in this area. I can only say I enjoy the look of Magical Diary. Conclusion: I've only played through two or three different routes to the end, as well as explored certain choices before reloading an earlier save. For one playthrough you can easily sink about 6 to 8 hours in if you take your time to appreciate what's on offer. As I said before, there are many choices and ways to play, so if you enjoy your first round, then there's strong replayability here. At the time of writing, I have 31 hours logged, and I'm sure I will end up with double that in the end. Magical Diary: Horse Hall is by no means a masterpiece. It has its strengths and its weaknesses. I haven't done the best that I could in explaining the latter, so I advise you to check some of the critical reviews before making a purchase. £10.99 is a fair price for the amount of effort put into this VN and for the amount of variation you'll find, but if this ends up not being your cup of tea, you'll probably be frustrated. I was when I bought it a few years ago on a discount. But now I would not have minded paying even the full amount. I suppose one of the essential points is: this is not Hogwarts despite clear nods in that direction. This world of magic has its own rules, lore, and sensations to it. You will have to decide how strongly you feel about what 'should' and 'shouldn't' be in such a universe. I say this in much the same way as I'd advise zombie or vampire fans to consider what they consider 'monster canon' before trying out a show, book, or game. I know how particular we nerds can be. But! If you have seen the general quality of indie VNs available, you will probably agree that Magical Diary is one of the most polished and meaty additions to the genre. If you enjoy magic, fantasy, cuteness, and originality mixed with parody, you could do much worse. 9/10 * I'm in love with
Hieronymous Grabiner
because
he's the Snape we deserved but never received
.
