Caster of Magic, the enhanced edition of the original Master of Magic, is a work of love.

It was built by the community to improve on a strategy classic. Now it's brought a step further with Caster of Magic for Windows.

It is an upgraded edition of a classic which allows you to run it natively on Windows for the first time, as well as supporting higher screen resolutions.

It also contains countless improvements for Caster of Magic, including new spells, game options, UI and AI improvements. It is the ultimate edition of Master of Magic, brought by the fans to the modern era.

Caster of Magic started out as a mod, championed by Seravy and building on top of the already popular community patch. Caster of Magic has been a fan favorite of the Master of Magic community and we are pleased to be able to work with Seravy to officially integrate Caster of Magic, giving him the recognition he deserves.

The game is crashing like there is no tomorrow.

You can at best play 5-10 years ingame before it crashes.

Other than that, cool new QoL improvements. But what are they good for if the games main objective is how to crash as early as possible.

And this isn't fixed by going back like several turns and do things differently. It keeps crashing at exactly the same turn, like it's predetermined on game start or something.

When I say I play Master of Magic, what I really mean is that I play this.
The only way to play Master of Magic, imo.
AI is very, very competent. The balance is as perfect as can be. The creator Seravy has turned this game into something really amazing (and still getting tweaked)
Whether the new Master of Magic is a success or not, you'll still want to get this.

Essential to enjoy Master of Magic.
*balancing tweaks that doesn't harm the asymmetrical charm of the game, because it balances things on a more 'macro' sense of entire races and entire realms, it improves/replaces the most useless spells, and in my opinion adds more choices for overpowered spell combos for us to discover and exploit for fun!
*A bigger focus on spells with means to increase capacity of casting spells (referred to as 'skill') and AI no longer with 1-spell per turn limit. Magic is what leads to victory. This is 'Master of MAGIC'.
*Automatic combat get simulated much more accurately, drastically improving what is happening in AI turns and if you choose to play battles instantly to save time. I also like that the manual combat allows an option for you to cast a spell a turn while letting computer handle troops.
*Formidable AI on medium to high difficulties instead of having AI cheat with resource bonuses (now reserved for high difficulties only). The AI is among the very best of 4X strategy, a particular accomplishment given the high level of strategy involved with this version of the game. You can't just peacefully gather a couple of doom stacks and win.
*It is harder to ensure victory just because you played well at the beginning. Opponents can catch up!
*Expanded diplomacy and AI to player interactions, distinct wizard personalities with play styles,
*Build queue! Saves lots of time. Buildings in general tweaked for the better and some new buildings added.
*Several improvements to the user interface.
*Dozens of options to simulate scenarios and/or to accommodate for player preferences, including game length contributors and some options that neutralize some of the most controversial changes of the mod (e.g. intelligent neutrals, faster early game).
*Caster units don't lose mana when using range attacks! Magicians with caster 20! More units (recruitable or summoned) with caster. It is called 'caster of magic' for a reason.
*Tons of other tweaks and added features that don't add to the complexity of the game, improves quality of life for smoother gameplay, and just augments what is already in place.

Of course, with a set of changes, comes some disadvantages and I would like to warn players about these potential disadvantages (and no, I don't consider a disadvantage 'but but but my 11-death auto-win strategy! but I like 3/4 of units and spells being useless! but I love the bug with 'to defend' and my magic-immune paladins)

Many of these disadvantages can be lessened or disabled altogether with the many game rule options when you start the game. The previous 'caster of magic' game didn't have such a thing making these disadvantages much more pronounced. If these bother you a bit, certainly get this version 'for windows' over the 'caster of magic' DLC. It is worth the higher price.
*Can't disable: AI is very intelligent in combat, too intelligent, coming up with counters, targeting your weak spots, and not wasting time targeting your strong spots. This will likely frustrate the player (e.g. if 1 of the 2 units has resist magic, AI will target your other unit with curses).
*Can disable but only for neutrals: AI, including neutrals, play by the exploit of 'stalling for time' by any means necessary, which can look ridiculous (benny hill) and is the only game I ever played that does this. Yes, air elementals will hide instead of attack and the stalling will prevent you from conquering that lair or enemy city.
*Can disable: Game designed around a more powerful wizard on the opposing plane as a kind of 'final boss' - options to travel between planes limited early in game. Late game therefore can involve lots of battles and a game of 'attrition'
*Can disable: Game might be a bit stressful with the more aggressive AI targeting your cities (both in terms of attempted conquest and city curses) for people playing more casually. There are options to greatly lessen AI to city aggression,
*Can only partly disable: There is a bit much of removing certain exploits as a response to a few expert player strategies that we shouldn't all suffer for it. The one downside to balancing.
*Cannot disable: Not everyone might like the faster pace with more stuff happening per turn (more spells, units move faster, etc)
*Overland (world) graphics such as mountains and volcanoes and some of the new units have poor pixel design.
*A bit of the AI is clunkier, but the improvements are far more impactful.

I like some of the new features a lot. Selecting the options at the start for no chaotic wizards allows for some real diplomacy game and towns needing to be 5 tiles apart helps reduce city spam on the map. I went with the classic mountains because it's easier to see the terrain type on the overland map that way. Holding shift to switch between melee or ranged attack on a unit that can do both is a nice quality of life change.

It's important to know what you're getting into if it's your first time playing Caster of Magic. You really need a good knowledge of the in depth game mechanics if you are used to playing the base game even on impossible- if you are planning to play above normal or fair difficulty. The super OP strategies like starting the game summoning wraiths to skip the entire game doesn't work. Large amounts of books in one realm of magic in general is much weaker than in the base game (as of the 1.0 release).

You should know basic stuff like Resist Magic doesn't reduce damage from direct damage spells (like firebolt) or magic ranged attacks (magicians, etc), it only protects against save checks (stoning, death, confusion, etc). Resist elements and especially Elemental Armor do protect against magical ranged attacks, for example. Don't be afraid to right click and read the explanation of a particular spell or effect. Most stuff is right clickable.

I would highly recommend it if you want a challenge and to rediscover a classic game

Master of Magic is the best and most legendary game in the world.
But lets be honest here, there really was some serious problems with Master of Magic.

To be honest the AI was pretty bad. There was quite a bit of bugs. It was seriously unbalanced. Rushing paladins or making the same 6 hero strategy every time was getting repettetive quite fast. The cheese was so insanely overpowerede that my planet spanning empire was guarded by a few spearmen and one group of heroes that could run to everywhere on the plane in a few turns. Once you know a few ways to cheese the AI there is not much left. Is it a challenge to play, no. Is it hard to win, no. Does it even count as a strategy game, well hardly. It's just “I win with no challenge” buttom. Is this fun? Why.. Yes. It really is. Well.. Once or twice a year. So if you wan't to play the best game of all time, play Master of Magic.
But if you want an actual strategy game and a challenge read on.

What is Caster og Magic? It is a “new” expansion on the same old game. It is the same legendary game, but this time around a lot of the crazy cheese have been toned down so that there are more than one or two viable strategies. The AI is now a serious challenge that will whoop your ass on easy. Some races have been toned down and others have seen a buff. You might think that the big difference in power from race to race is fun. But it also creates games where the AI picks a weak race and is a complet pushover giving you no challenge at all.

This new expansion Caster of Magic II (Here named Master of Magic: Caster of Magic for Windows) is a great improvement over the Caster of Magic that we know. Makes the game run so much faster. Adds a huge amount of quality of life improvements. New spells and new units that is implemented to balance the game and make sure the AI can put up a decent challenge. And if you find something you want improved, just ask the very active developer Seravy about what can be done.

To be honest the thing that I hate most about Caster of Magic II is also the thing that I love the most. And that is that I actually have to think about what I do and build serious amounts of units and armies to defend my land and that I now actullay risk loosing a game. I never loose in Master of Magic even on hardest difficulty, because my small team of heroes are just that strong and makes me unbeatabel, no matter what race or what spell books I use. Don't get me wrong, my heroes are still very strong in Caster of Magic, but they can no longer just carry me though any game without a challenge anymore.

Some old players might get turned away by the fact that their old “go to” strategies is not as strong anymore and that they get beaten by the AI. Just read the game changes and start building units instead of trying to defend an empire without units. There are also still some bugs being worked out at the moment, many of them have allready been fixed in the next update.

I can seriously never play Master of Magic again without Caster of Magic. It is just no challenge and no fun without a good AI.

Excellent work! It has many new features that allow you to make the perfect game! There are indeed some balance changes that some may find disturbing as the first reviewer noted, but overall still an excellent experience for Master of Magic fans and 4X fans in general.

Caster of Magic for Windows works with Windows 7.

Caster of Magic for Windows is a great port of Master of Magic to Windows with some enhancements. The additional units and spells increase the replay value. At the same time, little magic is lost from the original. A different representation of some terrain fields and the changed balancing are a bit disturbing. For the price and the effort to recreate the original, it is definitely a clear recommendation!
