Über das Spiel

ON A GOOD DAY, ONLY 2.5 MILLION PEOPLE WILL DIE.

As vast alien mining cities suck the power and minerals from every major metropolis on Earth simultaneously, time is of the essence as millions of civilians are expiring by the second.

Using your stealth parachute and the now infamous 'Zooming' head-mounted sniper-weapon, your task is to slip in undetected from the sky, seek out and remove the alien leader by any means.

MDK gives you awesome super smooth 3D gameplay.

Plus, with the most advanced weapons ever created in a video game, you can 'take' out an alien's eye from five miles away or just neatly carve your name in his forehead!

MDK (Murder, Death, Kill, abbreviated for marketing) is a fast-paced third person shooter in which you take the fight to invading aliens by dropping from low orbit and landing on their minecrawlers. Your goal is simple: fight your way to the boss of each respective minecrawler, take them out and get the hell out, preferably before any more cities get demolished.
This all sounds quite serious, but I promise you that the game is actually really rather silly.

If you bought the game on Steam and you're running a modern OS on modern hardware, then you might notice something upon launching the game: namely that it doesn't run very well, if at all. What a bummer. But before you request a refund, don't worry, because there's a fix for that:

Download the MDK Steam Fan Patch, it not only allows the game to run on modern systems, but also adds widescreen support, brings back a couple ending cutscenes that were removed from the Steam release for some reason and a few other neat things.

With that out of the way, you can actually play the game! 5 minutes in, you can also realise that the control scheme is weird as hell, quit to main menu and rebind the keys in the options.

NOW you can actually play the game, and it won't be long before you realise it's gonna be a strange one, because MDK starts as it means to go on.

In the sense that it pushed the boundaries of PC gaming technology to their limits, MDK is effectively the Crysis of its time, except it was actually optimised extraordinarily well and could run on basic systems. What we really have here is a playable case study in cutting edge 1997 technology.
Mission: Deliver Kindness.
Moral compass: optional.

7/10

This is only an excerpt from a longer review.
It can be found in its full length here.
Unfortunately, it's too long to post on Steam in its entirety.

I really love this game and I first bought it on PlayStation in 1997, I played the game for hours even if this game is really short but I love going back to the levels. I hated the ending for the console version then out of no where in 1999 I bought the PC version from a friend and the game looks 100 times better then the PlayStation version. My only gripe with this game is that soundtrack isnt complete or they scrap some songs out from some of the levels compare to the PlayStation version, Now forward now to 2020 and this game isnt playable until I put in the Patch that some fan made and now it works on my modern PC and not have to buy it again in another website that I will not name. This game still holds up for 23 years of playing it. I wish the regular team made the second game. My only gripe now is that the music video ending is glitchy as hell but you can see the full colored ending in Youtube in better resolutio from the bands official channel. It looks better in color then in black in White. It works only with my Dualshock 4 and not my Xbox One controller but I prefer platformers on my Dualshock 4 more anyways. I still wish the soundtrack was full like the PlayStation version but this is still a good game for being so old.

Mr. Bruty and the team at Shiny Entertainment brought MDK to the world in 1997, and it holds up all the well 23 years later. With a soundtrack backed up by Tommy Tallarico, and filled to the brim with action. A must own.

MDK is the sort thing that isn’t well captured in words. One can describe it in such terms as would make it appear entertaining if ultimately unexceptional. Perhaps the best description would be something like 3D Contra, with Contra’s mixture of platforming and non-stop movement and action, only without the variety of power-ups and such. Instead you get a variety of expendable items and, as perhaps more befits its fully 3D environment, some sort of sniper riffle with several types of ammo. There’s even the constant spawning of enemies at some points, and some stages end with imposing bosses. The game is far easier than Contra would be, indeed it is hardly challenging by any stretch of imagination. It is also over all too soon.
What this can hardly communicate to you is just how good it feels to actually play this thing, how satisfying every aspect of it is. How well designed and paced each stage is, how distinct they are, how there is almost always something new happening in every portion of every stage. And what is downright impossible to communicate is the game’s art direction and its overall feel. This is something else, alright, and it really could’ve been made only at this point in time, by this particular developer. Think some sort of collaboration between Looney Tunes and H.R. Giger. Or a particularly gonzo comic from the pages of Heavy Metal/Metal Hurlant magazine. This doesn’t help much, of course, but really nothing can.
One thing that ought be mentioned is that this Steam release is as lazy as one expects from Interplay’s animated corpse. There is however an all-in-one patch for the steam version that includes both all that is needed for running it on modern PCs and all the inexplicably excised content, so there’s that.

The Steam release of MDK is a bit of a letdown. It inspired me to make a fan patch for the game since, not only does it not include any glide wrappers to make the game compatible with modern systems, it also missed a LOT of original content from the game such as cutscenes, artwork etc.

Using my patch though you should be able to experience the game as it was meant to be.

In my opinion MDK is a pretty awesome shooter. It's insanely easy to play (especially with a modern WASD+mouse control setup), easy to grasp and while the game is a bit short, it has an insane amount of variety in level designs and graphics, especially for its time when most shooters looked like brown and grey corridors (*cough*Quake*cough*) and the game also features more open arena-like spaces a lot.

A DEFINING feature of the game is the sniper rifle which attaches to your head like a helmet. Back in the 90's, this must've been the FIRST shooter I remember that had a sniper weapon that felt as good and simple to use as this. And it zooms in without any kind of pixelation as well.

The music is also stellar and composed by Tommy Tallarico who obviously took a lot of influence from Danny Elfman in his score for the game, using a lot of synthesizers mixed with rich orchestral sounds and themes. The soundtrack is as varied and whimsical at times as the game is and fits perfectly.

Graphically the game ranges from being really colorful to having almost gothic HR Giger'esque designs, especially with the main protagonist. The low polygon count gives the game a very unique look though it uses a lot of very impressive graphical tricks for its time such as a world consisting entirely of mirrored surfaces that still looks awesome today.

All in all, MDK, or Murder Death Kill as it's originally called, in my opinion is an underrated must-play title for all shooter fans.

Great game just like I remember it except one HUGE problem... They completely cut out the ending! After you defeat the final boss the game just abruptly ends, no awesome song and cutsceen. Also the screenshots they showcase on the steam game page are all from the beta version of MDK and none of those are actual screenshots from the current game. I'm happy to see the game on steam but steam has a lot of cleaning up to do with this game.
Edit: I hear that steam may have patched this problem with there being a lack of an ending so good on them! Still such a good game though!

A true underrated classic! A little dated at this point, but it really just needs some minor control tweaking. Trapped in 480p but otherwise, its fun as hell.
