Über das Spiel

I know another story. I heard this one from Panik. There were two friends. One of them was a good fighter in Inupiaq games, and a good hunter. One was a good swimmer. The two friends were brave. Whenever they would cross the sea, they would use only willow as their boat paddles...

Spring has come to the Arctic and Nuna and Fox return in Never Alone: Foxtales -- the first expansion to 2014’s award-winning indie hit Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna).

Travel across open seas, swim through the ruins of a sunken village and paddle up the Noatak River on a mission to rescue a new friend. You’ll need all your wits and the skills of both companions to survive the dangers of the swirling currents, fierce creatures and hidden underwater hazards of the Alaska coast. Only by working together can Nuna and Fox save their friend and defeat an unexpected foe.

Foxtales features three all new levels full of environments to explore, puzzles to solve and enemies to face. Developed in partnership with the Alaska Native community, Foxtales reminds us that some challenges are best faced together and that even the smallest among us deserve respect.

Features
  • Take to the seas -- Climb aboard your umiaq (a sealskin canoe) and take to the waters of the coasts, rivers and lakes of Northwest Alaska. Paddle through waves, ice floes and rapids or dive underwater and journey across the sea floor, inside mysterious caverns and through a sunken village.
  • Seek the help of the spirits and your companion -- Discover spirit helpers who can change the course of currents at your command. Switch between Nuna and Fox in single player mode or play with a friend in local co-op mode.
  • Explore Alaska Native culture -- Foxtales includes five new unlockable Cultural Insight videos featuring members of the Alaska Native community including the family of Willie Panik Goodwin, Sr., the storyteller whose tale of “The Two Coastal Brothers” inspired the game.

Never Alone: Foxtales is an absolute gem and great additional content to the main game, if for the interviews alone. This DlC is very short, but I think was paced well, plus the main game and this can all be played within a singular session! Considering it has coop, it could make for a great date night game, or a great game for parents' to use as a tool to educate their children on Indigenous Alaskans.

There's no violence or blood in the game at all, and the combat is much like the first game--escaping, not attacking. The story itself was a wonderful short tale, and features the theme of: Respect for All Things.

It's done really, really well, and I'm thankful for the experience to play through more stories from this culture, told by the Inupiaq people themselves. If they ever released another DLC, it'll be an instant purchase from me.

Strongly recommend.

A short and sweet DLC chapter

Never Alone: Foxtales is the DLC to Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna), which acts as a prequel to the main story. You play as a young girl and her friendly fox as they create a little mischief that goes horribly wrong and it's their responsibility to fix it before things get even worse.

Like the base game, Never Alone: Foxtales is a story of a people...the Inuit (or commonly referred to as the Eskimo). This is based on an Inuit story regarding two brothers who faced against a giant mouse. The story is simple without much to expect, where the puzzles take precedence. The players can play as Nana (the girl) who can row the canoe, use ice blocks, and fight using her opposable thumbs...or the fox who can swim faster and communicate with spirits to relocate (...meaning it drags spirits to where it wants them to be). This requires teamwork between both player units and can lead to some interesting puzzle solving.

While I didn't quite care for the story of the DLC, I did find the insights about the Inuit people more interesting. The graphics are also quite a sight to behold. A nice package for $4 (more ideal during a sale at $2 since $4 is unreasonable for only 1 hour of gameplay), though given the length, I think $1 would have been more ideal since this DLC is only 1 hour long from beginning to end.

So, would I recommend this DLC? Well, yes if you're looking to complete the base game completely and if you're willing to wait for a sale. The main asking price is unreasonable for what you're getting and a sale will mark it for 50% off. Simply put, wait for a sale before you grab this one.

7/10 DLC done right...now about that price...

So, would I recommend

Foxtales is what Never Alone should have been in the first place. This one actually feels like you are playing a proper puzzle platformer. The developers made away with the annoying gimmicky platforming found in the base game and instead puts the focus onto puzzles. The puzzles are pretty decent (but still straightforward) and it is a refreshing change after playing the base game. I found the story here much better too and it feels like an actual story with a proper plot which I enjoyed. ‘Insights’ or documentary clips makes a welcomed return here. The main downside I can think of would be it’s length. It is very short and can be completed within an hour.

A one-hour story (with the same girl+fox as main characters) with the same scheme as the original game (videos + gameplay). The gameplay seems to be improved, the puzzles are smoother and better designed. I'd recommend getting the game + this DLC.

Never Alone: Foxtales DLC adds about 1.5-2hrs gameplay and a ten minute documentary. As with the base game, gameplay is slow paced and the controls can be wonky. I still had fun though. The graphics and narration are nice and I like the documentary you unlock. If you like documentaries, or cultural stories, I'd recommend this.

This DLC has a very short story. But believe me, gameplay is way better than main game. Has good messages too. If you are planning to buy the game, don't forget to take this DLC :)

Eh, I appreciated the first game (and this, slightly less so) for what they try to pull off more than what they do pull off. The experimental storytelling married to social / environmental ethics issues is as great as it was in the main game, but the adventure's a) too light on content to really go anywhere at only 50 minutes length, and b) just as clunky a platformer as before, with a bit more emphasis on really tiring puzzles. The puzzles in this (and the prior game) are tiring not because of their complexity, but rather that you will screw up and have to repeat segments because of floaty, unresponsive controls. It's just not much fun.

The DLC introduces new game mechanics with the boat. This brings a new coop experience. The story is also good and will teach the respect of this people for their environment. Don't hesitate! Take it with the main game!

The small DLC of Never Alone offers another journey with Nuna and the Arctic fox struggling against a monstrous threat. The story is based on the Alaskian folktale Coastal Brothers- but i actually expected another character or to play a different character. Nevertheless, the puzzles are exciting- the atmosphere of the game this time is a bit scary than the main game. Nuna also never goes ashore, she stays on the boat most of the time. The DLC offers at least four or five insights. It doesn't take much time to finish it. Considering the positive reviews, i hope that there would be another game or DLC.

Review with images and glorious formatting @ Vox Ludicus - Review: Foxtales. DISCLAIMER: Foxtales was played on retail code provided by the publishers.

Foxtales is more of what I saw in Never Alone. Nuna and her arctic fox return in yet another story, this time as told by Panik, another Iñupiat responsible for compiling traditional stories of his people. Foxtales doesn’t stray from Never Alone’s formula, and you’ll see much of the same across its three different chapters. If you enjoyed the first, you’ll likely enjoy this – but if you’re still on the fence, here’s what I thought.

Foxtales casts aside the terrain-based platforming that was prevalent in the main game in favor of long kayaking and swimming sections. Nuna is once again the “tool-user” of the pair: she can row the kayak and throw rocks, but eschews the bolas. The fox doesn’t gain any new tools, and will continue with his pre-established function of wall-jumping and spirit guiding. The gameplay was again a bit tarnished: picking up stones doesn’t always register, and not always are you able to drop a stone overboard when on the kayak, instead just placing it back on the boat. Perhaps due to a lack of interactable spirits (the ones Nuna could hold on to) and the blizzards (which often glitched your jumps when you hit a ledge), I didn’t feel like there were as many moments where I had an undue death.

The water-based levels lend the game a fluidity (pun intended) that happened once or twice in the main game, like during the Tundra Meadow level (where you climb the giant while he hacks away at ice). Smashing ice, air-blowing spirits and mice hunting are spread among the one and a half, two hour experience that is the DLC.

Fortunately, five more of the documentary snippets can be found throughout the game, and the story is told in the same style – a narrator recounting the original tale in Iñupiat language. The Coastal Brothers, the story you play through this time, is shorter and was more in line with fables – it’s clearly a story to teach children not to toy and provoke animals.

Gameplay again feels a tad unpolished and as if the game would be easier if played in two. The core is still well delivered: you’ll be told a short story of Iñupiat origin and have supplementing Cultural Insights to teach you more of the Iñupiat culture and way of life. Foxtales is best described as a module of Never Alone, a side-story with slightly different mechanics but its heart at the same place.

A definite must buy for those who loved the core game. While short (It took me 80 minutes with many restarts to finish the game + plus a sneaky exploit on the final puzzle) It is still worth the time to play.

New puzzle types are definitely not a breeze to figure out straight away, And theres a good challenge to beating them.

As usual the art style is beautiful, There were a couple of sections i just had to stop and screenshot to enjoy for later viewing.

In short, If you loved the core game it is highly recommended to pick this up aswell.

It's short (3 levels), but it introduces a few new mechanics which are used in full. It was also entertaining, as it tells another short Inupiat story which I quite enjoyed.
If you liked the main game, recommended.
