It was really nice getting to know the Iñupiat culture and stories and the fox was really cute, which is why I'm giving it a positive review. However, there were some bugs, puzzles weren't as straight-forward as they should, controls could be a bit clunky sometimes, etc. As a game it could've been much better, but I'm still glad to know the Iñupiat people's stories. Loved the videos.

If you like clever, artistic side-scrollers this game is for you. It's beautiful and informative. I really enjoyed this game. Sure, there are certain mechanics that could be better, but, despite them, I was able to both enjoy and finish the game and all of its achievements. Artistically, the game is a triumph. Not only is it beautiful, it made me feel for the characters and generally captured the look and feel of the arctic culminating in a genuinely unique experience in this genre of game.

This game is a mix between game and documentary, and I mean that in a good way. You play as a little girl trying to find the source of a blizzard that is affecting her village, and as you play you are introduced into her culture: the Iñupiat/Inupiaq people.

Gameplay wise, it's a simple platformer with clever puzzles, beautiful art style, and very immersive music. The art of the game is a major point, the character feels really relatable with her animations, expressions, and overall interactions with the little fox. You can switch back and forth between her and the little fox in order to solve puzzles, I haven't tried it in co-op but I bet it's a nice 'couples game' to enjoy with someone. Also, the game runs very well, only had 1 bug during the entire playthrough and it wasn't really a big deal.

The documentary part relies on videos, as you play you discover parts of lore which allow you to watch real-life videos about the Iñupiat culture. Before playing this game I didn't know anything about these people, and this is one of the things I like about videogames, they can be fun but they can also be educational while keeping its entertainment level. The videos are really well done, good interviews, short and to the point so as not to bore you, good background music, subtitled, overall great production value.

The game isn't very long, but that's ok, it's a short nice little adventure which also teaches you about a bit of real-life Alaskan culture, took me around 4-5 hours to complete, I was taking my time enjoying it so it can probably be completed in 3-4 hours, or more if you are like me and want to take your time.

Great job by the developement team.

Cool game to play shared screen coop. But I cannot say that controls are responsive. Be ready to get frustrated at times. Nice story though. Native Linux support is decent. Switch to native version for Steam Deck.

As a local co-op game this is stunning. The art is great, and it is a treat to experience. The mechanics were very simple. My wife (who is not a gamer) and I played through this in 6 hours.

There is more to Never Alone than just the game. It is a cultural exchange as well. I was interested to learn everything the Iñupiat chose to share. I think this sets a example for content creators.

Never Alone is a beautiful game that shares real history and traditions of the Iñupiat people of Alaska, told through Nuna and her friend Fox, as they search for the source of an eternal blizzard, that threatens the survival of everything they have ever known.

The game is a simple platformer with slightly janky controls that can give more than your fair share of annoyances while playing, but it shines through the collectible videos called insights, that consist of the Iñupiat elders, storytellers, and other members of the Alaskan Native community sharing stories and wisdom about their culture, values and the amazing Arctic world that you encounter through the game. It also has a message about global warming, and how it has affected the people of Alaska and their day to day life.

I very much enjoyed the experience that this game offered, even though I had some troubles with the Bola controls. Despite that, I was fully enjoying my time and always found it exciting to hear more about the Iñupiat through the video insights. The game is beautifully crafted, with a strong message and it's culturally impactful.

Definitely recommending the main game, but also the DLC, which was a nice little addition.

I really like how Alaska folklore is heavily featured in this short, beautiful & educational game.

I felt I learnt a lot about native alaska culture than I previously knew. The short documentary videos you get to unlock are awesome!

A downside to this game is the lack of native online co-op at the time of this review. You have to use Steam Remote Play. When playing single player, it's quite common for your computer controlled partner to fall. This is frustrating at first until I realise the same issues would happen if I co-op with a human friend too. Once I see it from this perspective, I'm at peace with it.

It is somewhat difficult to recommend this game - however, if I said no to recommending it, it would break my heart to do so. It's rare that a game teaches you about a culture you never knew anything about, documentary-style, and gets you really invested in their lore. Using the medium of a video game to do so was genius and it flows beautifully because of the traditional allegorical storytelling that Native Alaskans and other First Peoples incorporate into their daily lives. I found myself really caring about the collectables, which were not too hard to find, because I wanted to see more of the film footage, documentary-style clips that accompany this game's menu. If you don't want to see them, however, it's optional unless you want achievements.

Speaking of achievements, for achievement hunters this is a pretty easy game to 100%. If you miss any collectibles, there is a chapter select feature. But now I get to the negatives. I played this game with a companion on Remote Play and while our lag can not be blamed on this game, the sometimes frustrating controls and platforming left us needing to take frequent breaks. There is an item called a Bola that one character must use to throw and knock down things such an ice blocks and it has no aiming reticule. A gamepad is recommended, yet aiming with the Bola becomes less natural with it, so it is up to personal preference.

Ultimately, if you are interested in foxes, Native history, and allegorical storytelling then this might be one to check out. If you're easily frustrating by finicky platforming and weird controls - while this game might be pretty easy - definitely get it on a big sale.

Sure the controls are not super responsive, but they are adequate enough. Sure the AI is abysmal if you let it alone -- but it is not too hard to lead it. Now, the graphics are very charming, the story is well told, and the little documentary-style videos are captivating -- I ended up 100% the base game with pleasure. And how else would I learn that auroras can take your head off and play football with it?

Score: 82/100.

Honestly, this game just isn't that fun, and the secondary aspects offered by it are really not that compelling. The game mechanics aren't great, the puzzles aren't fun, the visuals aren't particularly interesting. I get that this is a game that's about Inuit folklore, and like, that's an interesting concept, but the core content and the story of the game just aren't really enough to make it worth buying or playing.

The controls are absolute garbage. It feels so bad to do anything in this game, the fox goes at lightspeed and the girl is like a rock trying to roll uphill. The bola is the dumbest thing ever, just give me a targeting reticule instead of having me look at this janky arm.

I also encountered a bug where one of the spirits necessary to complete a level straight up didn't spawn, then another bug where I couldn't see a part of the screen (on an ultrawide monitor) that was necessary to understand the solution.

The bugs and shitty co-op AI get way worse the further you get into the game, several extremely frustrating deaths due to something going off-screen or the AI partner just going AFK.

Devs if you want to learn anything from this game: don't base every bit of challenge on trial-and-error jump sequences, it's frustrating and lazy.

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is more than just a puzzle platformer but a cultural experience. It mixes gameplay with story-telling rooted deeply in the traditional lore of the Inupiat people of the Arctic. As your progress through the game you will unlock video insights that you can watch along the way.

You play the game as Nuna, a young native girl along side her lupine companion called Fox travelling along to find out the source of a raging blizzard and a strange man who destroyed her village. The skills of each character compliment each other as you traverse along and you can change between each character at the click of a keystroke. The game is also all controlled by keyboard (no mouse controls).

The message that Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) brings is about the connection between community and the individual, how the things that bind us together allow us to overcome seemingly impossible tasks. The importance that story-telling plays in a community as a teaching tool and preserving knowledge.

* I am 3 hours in and not finished the story yet so I feel a good game length will be reached for the full play time (but I watch the videos that unlock as I play the game as well).

A beautiful game that weaves a collection of insightful video clips of real people and their history into a fantastic gaming experience. ????

NOT TRASH.

Follow my curating page to know if something's trash or not.

Never Alone is a short coop platformer game that leads us into discovering the Inupiat, an Alaska Native people. Based on a traditional tale, you are going through the Arctic as Nuna and Fox to help your village survive the endless blizzards. The more you progress and discover hidden elements in-game, the more you unlock video insights from Inupiat elders, storytellers that act as a 30-minute documentary into the Inupiat culture and reality that you can watch later.

Mechanically speaking, the game was frustrating, the controls weren’t great, and aiming the bola (your weapon/tool), was a complete chore. Playing the game alone was tedious but with a friend (thanks Lukara), it made the experience extremely fun, and we laughed a lot while discovering the stories of the Inupiat. This way of incorporating a documentary into a game is unique and I honestly learned a lot about a community I knew nothing about.

If you have no interest in learning about the Inupiat and just care about another platformer, skip it. If there's no one else to play it with, try it but the experience won't be optimal. Though, if you want to take the 3 hours to discover a new world, remove the dust from it in your Steam library and dive into another culture, go for it. It’s a game that goes beyond simple gaming.

There’s a reason this game won the 2015 GAME FOR CHANGE award.

TL;DR Amazingly made small indie game

This game tells Inuit folk tales. Specifically about a girl and her fox.
The game is a puzzle-platformer, which is quite easy. And is not too long.
It took me 6.3 hours to finish both the main game and the DLC.

On the flip side, the graphics from 2014 looks quite dated, compared to modern puzzle-platformers (i.e. Inside, Little Nightmares, etc.). Not to mention compared to AAA games.

The strong points of the game is the atmosphere, which is very unique, and really draws you in into Inuit culture.
And the music.

The story/dialog isn't too deep or sharp, as it's a retelling of a children's tale.

I'm not sure what exactly drew me into this game, as I don't particularly like platformers... But something did...

It's not some amazing new game that's going to blow your mind... But it's a definite 6/10 - 7/10 for me.

A captivating story delivered as a game. The game by itself doesn't really do much to talk about, it was more like a short film and the player has to do some platforming to progress. It was a good experience - the story, music, and the way it was delivered along with the source materials as unlock-able documentary.
It is mostly a very positive game until the game mechanics and controls got infuriating. The game starts out quite simple and charming, but as the story progress they introduce few mechanics to make the game feel a bit hard (wind) and they kept reusing it to make the entire game seem hard and a little bit annoying because jump totally depends on the wind. It didn't seem bad in the main game but once I entered the DLC story, both the game mechanics (boat) and controls were driving me nuts, it was needlessly hard. I didn't like the fact my character or the Fox dying too often because of the sloppy controls. The game was linear to allow any mistake.
A game well worth the try, has support for coop.

Never alone (kisima Ingitchuna)

Pros:
+ the graphics look really nice and beautiful with a great snowy atmosphere that really gives a cozy feeling wile playing.
+ the story is good and gets you wanting to keep playing to find out more. Its very heartwarming and I think it is the best part of the game.
+ the great cultural insights, that you unlock while playing the game. They give you a sense of how the people live and I really like that they are well made and they seem like really nice people.
+ the boss battles when you fight against the evil are fun to play through and I wish there was more of them.

cons:
- the bugs. They are just all over the place. Whenever you die the camera often goes crazy and zooms in the right corner for no reason, or when one of the characters glitches stuck somewhere and cant get out. When spirits randomly dissaper causing the main character to fall to her doom. Just by playing through the game normally you will encounter several of them, to the point that it becomes one of the games main challenges.

- the controls feel weird and really bad. You often get strange momentum that causes you to miss jumps, and therefore die unfair deaths, not even to mention the snowstorms, that blow in a certain direction meaning you have to wait until the snow blows in your direction before making a jump. Plus, You constantly have to switch between Fox and Nuna because of the next point.

- bad AI. If your playing this game alone, like me, the second character will be used by an AI. The problem is, that this AI fails to do simple tasks like climbing up a rope, doing a difficult jump, swinging a weapon, interacting with the spirits, etc. Meaning you have to constantly switch between Fox and Nuna.

- I sometimes found myself stuck, not knowing where to go, or how to progress, so I had to go to YouTube to look at a playthrough of the game.

overall: I like the concept and it would be a truly great game if it wasn't for the bugs and bad controls. I would like to see the developers to a remake of this and fix the problems, but it seems unlikley. I brought this on a 80% sale so if you are still interested then I would recomend waiting until it gets on sale again.

The puzzles may be reminiscent of games like LIMBO - but the big difference is here they are connected with nature, with the more heart-felt story and you are... well... never alone. The documentary bits you unlock as you progress in the game are a nice and unique touch that don't get in the way of the game and even help to lift the game above an average platformer/puzzle.

It's not what I expected. Instructive as a documentary but as a game isn't. Having to switch between two characters with different abilities is overdone and not necessary in the game. The controls are seems simple but especially at the last chapters I unnecessarily struggled on the pulling control during the blizzard.

It was interesting to hear the Iñupiaq language, though.

I really liked the game premise and wanted to like it, but sadly I didn't.

Having to switch between two characters with different abilities is overdone in games, and you really have to have a strong proposition to pull it off. This game didn't, and it often felt long and tedious having to switch between the characters. Typically, you'll use one of your characters to move some platform, then have the other jump on it, rinse and repeat. It feels like a regular platformer with lots of uninteresting breaks between jumps. It's even worse when you play in coop, since that means you're on stand-by half of the time.

The pacing is really bad, and the levels feel empty: there were several occasions where parts of a level just consisted of walking forward on a flat path and occasionally having to do a loose jump. It's hard to describe, but there really wasn't a lot going on a lot of the time.

The only thing that was fine were the videos. I honestly feel like they would have been better off just making a plain documentary.

It one of those games that I really tried to love but could not.
It looks stunning. Really beautiful imho.

The problems are the story didn't do it for me, the controls are kinda meh and the game play itself became really boring really quick (basic kids games gameplay).

Basically the entire game is just the story, but because I found it meh I couldn't enjoy the game as it had nothing else but its looks.

Slightly finicky controls aside, Never Alone is an easy game to blast through, whilst also opening up the world and culture of the Inuit and in particular the Iñupiat people to those (including myself) who have little-to-no knowledge of these people.

If you want an easy puzzle adventure then give it a try.

If you want to learn new things about this world whilst gaming then I would also highly recommend.

Never Alone is a retelling of the Iñupiat story, Kunuuksaayuka, with the titular character swapped out for a girl and a fox to highlight the role of nature and its spirits in Iñupiat life. Their home on the Alaskan coast is beautifully rendered in brilliant whites and gentle blues and the Iñupiat relationship with this environment, as a living creature both offering aid and promising danger, is blended perfectly with mechanics of a platformer.

The platforming itself, and the partner-based puzzle solving that comes with it, is wisely not difficult enough to get in the way of that story. But even if it was interested in providing a challenge, there's no real consequence for failure... unless you're susceptible to emotional manipulation. In that case, watching the friends morn each other will add a little bit of tension to the experience. Though the somewhat clumsy controls are just as likely to break that tension for you.

While I wouldn't call the gameplay a distraction for the aforementioned reasons, it's not the main driving force of Never Alone either. All the obstacles and challenges, how ever meager they are, are just there to provide a hook for the story being told piece by piece in the Iñupiat language. That story provides a hook itself for the Cultural Insight videos unlocked throughout the game. This is exactly the kind of educational material I wish I had growing up. By turning these small lectures into prizes you've earned, it builds its own sense of engagement instead of simply demanding your attention. And for that reason, I think these sorts of games are better at teaching than any documentary or lesson plan ever could be.

This game is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful and tells the wonderful story of the Iñupiaq people that are native to Alaska! Such a wonderful narrative that taught me about the beautiful connection this culture and group of people have to the natural world. The base game takes between 3.5-4 hours to complete with watching all 24 of the cultural insight videos. I am working on playing the DLC now and cannot wait to see what is next for Nuna and her fox companion!

Está bueno, pero deberían haber aclarado desde el inicio que el juego fue creado para ser coop. Porque jugar con 2 personajes a la vez, es un quilombo y arruina la experiencia. Mejor si lo jugás acompañado.

For anyone who is trying to play this game as co-op on Remote Play Together,
co-op mode only starts after player 1 starts the game as non co-op and follow the story.
I've only realised this when I was reading controller issue forum for Never Alone, after I refunded the game.
I was so excited to Remote Play Together with my friend,
however when I invited him to join remote play it did not assign controller to my friend (instead keyboard was assigned to both of us), and the player 2 was still greyed out in the game setting.
We tried to start the game up to where fox appears, but my friend's controller input was not detected.
So I thought the issue was that player 2 was not detected at the start, or that the controller was not assigned to player 2...
I tried to launch the game in Big Picture mode with different controller supports and used InputMapping as I was using DS4 and things I could think of for like a good hour,
but player 2 never appeared in the game setting nor controller was assigned to my friend even with InputMapping so I gave up and refunded the game.
Now I know that player 2 did not appear in the game setting at the start because this game was made like that, and controller inputs did not work on my first run because at that time my friend was not using InputMapping.
I wish I have realised that before I refunded...
I hope this helps other players who are stuck with the same problems!!

This game has got a lot going for it, yet I find myself after having played it for a few hours, unbelievably frustrated. The game is clearly made for two players, but has a single player version where you can swap back and forth between the two main characters. While this style of game play is not new, this particular game's adaptation of it is not very fun.

The controls have a very clunky feel which you can definitely adapt to, but many of the late game puzzles depend on your ability to do a lot of precise maneuvering while flipping back and forth between the two characters and doing it all at speed or with some kind of timer. A lot of time was spent dying on puzzles simply because it wasn't clear which area I was supposed to jump to next and the AI of the character you aren't actively in control of is unreliable and frequently that character will just sit still or wander away, not allowing the camera to pan far enough to see parts of the puzzles or deactivating puzzle elements mid jump.

While I would not recommend this game for the game play aspects, I will recommend it for the documentary style insights about the Inupiaq people. I learned a lot and was quite charmed with the way the game incorporates the story telling and visual elements of Inupiaq culture into the game. The insights don't cover topics in-depth, but I think it's a very rewarding, refreshing way to take a break in between puzzles.

Overall, I wasn't very pleased with the game play, but the art and story compel me to see it all to completion.

Interesting puzzle platformer

Game about an Inuit folk story where you switch between two characters, a girl named Nuna and fox.

To start off, what I enjoyed about this game was the story and videos that you unlock along the way as you approach owls. The narration was great, I like the fact that instead of English the narration was done in of the Alaska's Inuit languages which goes perfectly with the theme of this game. The sounds also fit the game just fine, it is not something that will blow your mind (or rather ears) but it is neither good or bad. The graphics are okay. The gameplay can be a little frustrating because Nuna sometimes gets stuck (and unstuck in 5 seconds), it gets annoying, especially, at the end where you have to escape from one of the enemies. The puzzle solving is also stupidly easy, on the other hand, I doubt that is the main thing the developers intended to be the feature of this game.

I would recommend this game to those who want to wind down. Possibly to those who would like to learn something about the Inuit folklore and traditions. The game consists of 14 (+5 dlc) easily unlockable achievements, it has trading cards to obtain and counts towards game collector badge.

I tried to enjoy this game. I really did. However, I kept wishing for the game to end so that I can get over with it. Although the game has nice visuals, it wasn't what I had expected in the end. The story didn't keep me engaged and feel for the character at all. The mechanics of both the girl and fox are rather clunky. The girl's actions are limited compared to the fox as she can only run, jump, use bola, and move objects throughout the game, while the fox has more things to do. As someone who played co-op for the entire game (as the girl even), it's disappointing to stand still and wait. The game lacks clear communication with the players on what to do, especially in dire moments when we get chased by the antagonist and polar bear. Really not worth the money spent.

A truly heartwarming story from the frozen north.
Sure the platforming here and there can be a bit wonky but what truly sold this game for me is the heart and love the developers poured into it telling the story of a little girl and her friend the fox.
The clever use of spirits as guides and the genuine atmosphere of the game is remarkable and to me this is a must play through both for the insights as well as for the story.

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is an atmospheric platform game where we dig deep into the stories of Alaska natives and explore this bitterly cold world.

Never Alone, developed in collaboration with real residents of Alaska, appears as a culturally rich treasure.
In the game, we try to find the source of a blizzard that endangers the lives of the tribal people with a little girl and an arctic fox.
In our adventure to save the indigenous people from this terrible storm, we try to find our way with many dangerous enemies and obstacles along with the harsh conditions of the poles.

I miss winters like these, damn global warming

This game was a very pleasant surprise for me. I'm not a fan of platformers so i don't even remember how i've got this, probably from some bundle since i often activate games i might play someday but not sure i'll like them. And i've got more from this game than i expected.

This is a cute platformer game with some nice story. The gameplay is pretty simple and straightforward and the game isn't too hard. Some platforming sections could be tricky but after several attempts even a slow player like me can pass those.
The game is really beautiful and offers a lot of varied locations to run through. There's some jumping, swimming and light puzzle solving. A good variety in levels helps a lot to keep this short game fresh until the very end. You'll experience some calm moments and at time you'll run for your lives with your fox.

Where this game shines is in cut-scenes which has Iñupiat people from Alaska. These are video cut-scenes with real people and i must say it was really enjoyable to watch. So you get a decent platfromer and learn some stuff about native Alaskan people along with a nice legend.

Controls could be frustrating because sometimes they're not very precise but not too bad. Mostly it's clear what to do and the game is pretty forgiving.
Graphics are very good and atmospheric with nice artstyle and beautifully crafted areas.

Worth getting on sale for people who enjoy easier platformers with some good story.

Pros
  • Looks good
  • Video cut-scenes are awesome
  • Good balance between being challenging and fun
  • Good story

Cons
  • Sometimes controls are not precise

Verdict: 81/100

The game is a platformer with puzzle elements based on Alaskan native folklore. The gameplay is allright, there aren’t many mechanics, but what’s there works most of the time. The only criticism I have is that the controls feel unresponsive at times. Platforming is often not precise enough - not being able to turn during jumping is a big offender, and aiming the bola with the mouse is tricky. I also would have preferred more puzzles and less instakill platforming. This aspect is much better in the DLC though, which is more about puzzles.

The real highlight of the game is the story and the lore. It is based on Inupiat folk tales, narrated by natives. The game also has short documentary videos that provide insight into their culture. This is nicely complemented with the beautiful visuals, both during the gameplay, and the cutscenes which are done in the style of Inupiat art. The amosphere of the whole game is just great and unique.

So while gameplay isn’t anything special, the visuals and story are great and memorable. Highly recommended for anyone interested in native american cultures.

Never Alone Gameplay

The game has a very heartwarming story with unpredictable turns. The control is good, but sometimes it does not what I tell. The KI (if you play Singeplayer) is good for the most time but sometimes a bit stupid, because I want to jump at a holding ghost and the KI goes away that so that I fall down.
All in all, the Gameplay is good but has it dropouts.

Cultural Aspect
It's nice to have the option to watch the video or to continue playing. The videos are very interesting, and you can definitively learn things about the Iñupiat without losing Gameplay-Quality.

All in all I'd give 8,5/10 Points.

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is a cute and beautiful puzzle platformer game; okay let’s talk about the story.

It was just another day for the young Iñupiat girl named Nuna, but as she was taking home food for her Village a mysterious blizzard had come.

But unlike other blizzards this one would not cease, with the threat of starvation looming over her people the young girl sets out on a journey to find the source of the eternal blizzard. But she is not alone for a young fox comes with her to lend a paw. But can these two unlikely heroes do it? In a land that with one wrong move could be your death.

Now the likes. The art/graphics style is very beautiful it's just nice to just stop and look at it sometimes. The levels are good and pretty varied from Snowy Tundras, to abandoned villages to even forests.

The game’s story is very good as it’s told like a fairytale. The atmosphere in the game is very good it can be beautiful and kind of spooky sometimes. The puzzles were Fair and weren't that hard to figure out. The soundtrack/music was very nice especially the part with the owl man music.

The two best parts were one those cutscenes that were like a scrimshaw art, they were simple yet beautiful very interesting looking. Two those cultural insights were very good it was cool to learn about the Iñupiat culture, way of life and their beliefs.

Now the dislikes. Well there is this big bug in the game; you see the game can be played with a controller. But every time I played with a controller and switched to the fox or the girl the controller would lock up and go into co-op mode and no matter what I did like unplugging the control and plug it back in or switching it back to single player mode, every time I touched that controller it would always go back to co-op mode.

It was just really frustrating I tried the fix that was in the discussions and it still did not work, but you can still play the game with a keyboard and mouse.

The game can be a little awkward to control if you're using the keyboard and mouse instead of a controller. Game can also be a bit short you can probably beat it in 3 hours if you're not going after achievements. Game is also bit expensive for such a short game but not too bad.

Okay with that said Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) is a cute and beautiful puzzle platformer game, with a very good story, very beautiful art/graphics style and very good insights into the Iñupiat culture.

So if you want to play an interesting platformer and you want to learn about a different culture then this game could be for you.

Pros:
- A very simple game, but rich in folklore.
- Love the Cultural Insight videos where the elders share the Inupiat stories and folklore.

Cons:
- The bola. Hot damn, I really dislike the bola.

Summary:
- Yes, the controls and AI can be a bit wonky sometimes but it won't affect your enjoyment of the game much. 9/10 would recommend this game. (would've given a 10/10 if not for the bola)

As much as I like the concept of the game with mixing in historical and educational insights and the beautiful art style, I can not recommend it.

The controls are clunky.
The more you progress into the game the more frustrating dealing with the controls become. Examples being getting stuck on the terrain while running away. Having to do precision timed jumps while trying to get a branch to move out of the way. At the end I was so frustrated that I went to youtube to watch the Foxtales DLC rather than playing it myself.

Got this a 5 years ago. Wondered why I hadn't finished it.
Found out the reason why.
Game breaking glitches and questionable controls.
Players can teleport over the map or clip through objects, some level triggers don't fire.
Game AI will kill the character, will stay put in some places and not in others.
The worst offender is the controls. Inconsistent at best. Bolo control is absolutely awful.

Beautiful artwork, really enjoyed the story and how it was told and was interested in the cultural insights.
Everything else lets it down so badly. I really wanted to like this.

The culture insights are easily the most interesting and compelling parts of this game. I honestly loved the beginning areas where it was mostly just a walking simulator with simple puzzles. However, towards the middle to ending parts of the game it just became headache inducing with the difficulty of the puzzles. The random elements scattered throughout made it hard to predict what was going to happen at any given moment, and the level design made certain areas just a confusing mess where I had no idea what to do and ended up dying over and over to figure it out. Also, sometimes the character I wasn't controlling just ended up dying due to his AI walking the wrong way. I wanted to like this game, and I really do like the tone that the videos set, but it feels muddied by the complicated game play.

Never Alone is a puzzle platformer game with an Alaskan setting focusing on the Alaskan natives and their way of life. After playing it, I don’t know if I can consider this as a game or even an interactive story. In fact, it feels more like an interactive documentary and I will explain why.

I came into the game expecting similar gameplay to Limbo but instead there are hardly any puzzles. The puzzles are extremely straightforward with the answer staring right at you. As a platformer, it isn’t a very good one too unfortunately. I didn’t like how the characters controlled personally, especially the fox as it felt too floaty for my liking. The platforming segments are really straightforward until the final act where its just plain annoying with that endgame sequence. I won’t spoil it but you can expect many deaths and retries unless you are used to MOBA or RTS games and are able to effortlessly switch and coordinate actions between your two playable characters with a time limit. In short, if you are thinking of getting this game for its gameplay: I think you will end up disappointed.

Where this game is unique however is that there is a short documentary featuring multiple short interview clips with real life Alaskan natives and their culture, folk tales and way of life within the game. In the game you will encounter owls. Each time you encounter an owl or progress the plot to a certain extent, an ‘insight’ or a mini documentary/clip is unlocked. I find these very interesting to watch and is the feature that made me ultimately decide to recommend others to play this game.

Having said that, the story is kind of a mess and doesn’t feel cohesive. It feels as though they are trying to make a plot based on the documentary clips. For example, one clip talked about how a woman’s brother raised a bear cup after killing its mother. The next segment features a polar bear. And when there is a clip of northern lights who are children who died early and will pull off your head to play football with it. The next segment features these playful but harmful spirits. Therefore, I feel as though I am playing through a series of scenes rather than an actual story. That’s why I was surprised when the credits rolled and the story was actually adapted from a source material.

Nothing wrong with that, but it's advertised as a platformer, which it is, but a subpar one at best.
It's not very challenging and it soon gets quite boring.

The graphics and story are amazing. I give 10/10 for both. But playing dynamics are weak. Repeating same things again and again. Nothing new after 15 mins playing.

Also it was buggy for me almost at the end of game. I couldn't finish the game, watched the end of game on youtube.

As a result, I would recommend you to not keep your expectations but the graphics are incredible. You can support the developers by buying this game and encourage them to develop such games more.

Little beautiful puzzle platformer, maybe cinematic platformer, with a pretty unique theme about the Iñupiaq indigenous people of Alaska. I REALLY LOVED the mechanic of working together between the girl and the fox, pretty similar to that of the Pocahontas game for Sega Genesis which I LOVE and think that I never saw anything similar, until I played this game. It has some pretty exciting moments and great puzzle design, but not too challenging. If you liked games like Limbo or maybe Another World to some extent, maybe you'll like this short beautiful game.

100% positive review for the cultural insights and story sequences. Thank you to the Alaskan Inupiat community for the opportunity to listen to your experiences! The format is informal, personal and entertaining, with lots of individual stories and perspectives.

The animated story sequences throughout the game are done in a nice style that evokes the legends well. The overall idea of working with others to survive and not being self centred tie the insights, story and game together.

As for the game itself, mixed review. The visuals are quite attractive, if bleak at times. I really liked the design of the helper spirits, otherworldly yet comforting. The characters of Nuna and the Fox are both very cute, making it kind of sad when they fall off a ledge, unfortunately (Especially since the surviving character will begin crying for a few seconds before the sequence restarts.). The puzzle platformer element is sometimes fun, other times a bit tedious and sometimes just frustrating. I did encounter a bug where a boss fight that should have been easy became impossible. When I redid the sequence, including the chase that led up to the fight, which I really didn't want to re-do, the fight was over in a few tries. To be fair I don't really like platformers anymore except metroidvanias, but this one did seem quite clunky. The controls don't matter so much in the first half of the game as not much precision is required. In the second half the difficulty is increased but the controls still aren't responsive enough to allow you to make precise moves. As others have mentioned, the AI controlling the second character in 1 player mode will sometimes jump the second character off a ledge, forcing you to redo a sequence. So it's hard to recommend the game itself without caveat. I mainly bought this for the cultural elements, which are totally worth it. Just don't expect the fun platforming experience of the year.

Never Alone is what I'd personally call an educadventure. Featuring simple yet fun gameplay it also entails lots of actual knowledge about life on the coldest places of earth as well as the mythology and history of the Iñupiaq while providing great platforming that felt a bit like Limbo. Just without the gruesome parts and eery atmosphere.

While not being a particularly long game, the educational content consists of roughly two hours of documentary in total about a topic I personally knew absolutely nothing about, which was immensely refreshing and interesting.

The game deserves all the prizes it won and more, being both something culturally relevant as well as just a great little indie title.

Definitely recommended

I played this game before, years ago. I love that it has an educational element. As an archaeologist, I'm intrigued by using this medium to preserve knowledge. This game is visually breathtaking...It's not particularly difficult but still entertaining to play. Also...I love foxes.

In my ongoing and likely futile effort to write a Steam review for every game in my library (#192 out of 555)... it's time for Never Alone.

Fantastic atmosphere but I found the platforming to be too simplistic to hold my interest. The included educational material is very interesting, however, and makes the game more compelling than it would otherwise be. Judging by its own merits, I'd give it a pass, but if you're interesting in learning more about Iñupiat culture and mythology, it's a fantastic resource.

would've been 8/10 if it wasn't so buggy

Never Alone is pretty, and fun, two things I find necessary for playing a video game. It also has a polar bear that scared me.

This is a very beautiful game. I really liked the visuals, and found the cultural insight very interesting. Unfortunately the gameplay and controls are terrible. Specially the last third of the game is just not fun. What is even less fun is the Foxtales dlc. I recommend watching the documentary on youtube, and not bothering with the game.

Even though the story itself is interesting and the cultural aspect is undeniable, the general issues with controls and level design makes this hard to enjoy.
