Niche is quite deep, and actually teaches (not much, but well) a few core concepts of evolution, ecology and genetics, without being to lecture heavy or boring. It is, in fact, A GOOD EDUCATIONAL GAME. I didn't think, I would see it happen, but Stray Fawn Studios managed to produce an interesting, compelling edugame.
The official stuff: Turn based resource management 4X-Lite with cute animals. Manage food, living space, reproduction and genes - with cute and sometimes rediculous animals.
Diverse map compositions, sandbox mode options and suitable art direction. Praise all around.
My pack died out in the tutorial.

This game seems fun and neat to start with but I find myself being bored AF as I play through. I have yet to actually get to any end island or anything. About 3-5 islands into the game the game loop feels exhausting. Giving every single creature boring maintenance level tasks every turn sucks all the fun out of it. Trying to build traits and immunity is kinda fun but is much more the long game than an active game. To make an analogy it's like trying to build a house. I want to pick rooms and make interesting design choices but I'm spending most of the time sweeping floors and wiping counters. Sure it's needed to maintain the house but I don't want it to be the focus.

This game has been a huge part of my childhood, I've been following it since the very beginning and have played the game for many years now. As a long time player, I've really enjoyed this game and keep coming back despite having all the achievements. The game is highly customisable to however you'd like to play thanks to Sandbox settings. You want to start with more than two creatures? Add up to nine in Sandbox settings! Want to customise those creatures? Sandbox settings! Want your creatures to live longer? All available in Sandbox settings! And there's always the easily accessible cheats menu for anything else you might need which can be opened while playing with a simple tap of F1. It can keep me entertained for hours with a variety of stories you can tell with your Nichelings. There are negatives though, island size being a main one. You can maybe reach 60-100 creatures before the island is just too small for them all, which can put a limit on storytelling. I would love to see bigger islands added or even a custom island builder of some kind! Sadly, I don't believe this game is receiving further updates as the team work on new games. I do recommend giving this game a play though if you're looking for a slower paced game focused on strategy with many storytelling opportunities.

I've been playing this game on and off for years now and it's...fine, I guess. I loved it when I was younger, but honestly now it's just too repetitive. It's like a farming game but with no end goals. You don't earn anything at the end. Half the achievements are next to impossible to get unless you sink hundreds of hours into story mode, and some of them don't even work (looking at you, Clownkoi achievement). It's a ton to keep track of, between tens to hundreds of creatures all needing to do things every day, and making sure you have the right genes you want, and trying not to starve...An interesting concept, but a LOT of gameplay and stress with little payoff. Accidentally losing one immunity gene can cost you HOURS on a save, and you can't do anything about it.
Not the worst game in the world, and fun at times, but definitely a lot.

A really cool idea, and especially appealing to me as someone with a background in Biology. The gameplay ideas are interesting - breeding Nichelings to get specific genes, managing resources with your little guys specialising in different food sources like hunting, gathering, fishing etc., and giving a progress goal with travelling to other islands. Sadly it's all a bit slap-dash in execution. The UI is awful and makes for a completely tedious experience, both with controlling your Nichelings as well as reading their genes and stats. The campaign mode is pretty lackluster being pretty much 3 levels of tutorial followed by aimless wandering about with little instructions. Sandbox mode could be a really good timesink, but again, it feels like just aimless wandering about that isn't really immersive with the UI problems and also pretty simple core gameplay once you remove the whole genes and breeding aspect.

If you can get past the very poor presentation I can see this being an enjoyable timesink, but it didn't click for me. Still, a neat idea though.

Niche is a fun and diverse game with so many different possibilities. There is so much to do and explore, so many different kinds of islands, and best of all so many combinations of creatures. You can form your creatures to be fierce warriors or peaceful berry pickers, move from island to island with each generation, and unlock genes along the way that can help you get even more incredible creatures. Honestly my favorite aspect of the game is how the genes are set up, with genotypes, phenotypes, dominance and recessiveness each determining what traits will show up in babies

I feel disappointed that I don't enjoy this game. Based on the shell it looked interesting to me, I enjoy an evolution, slow paced and i guess you could say Tycoon or sim. But this Isnt that, its primarily a limited strategy survival.
You get 3 moves every day and your animal is dead within about 10 if you don't get attacked by a predictor that isn't always detected. You basically eat, breed, move across map, die, repeat. There arn't really many gene or evolution options considering that is the focus of the game. Honestly its just not fun, feels a lot like one of those educational games you played at school as a kid.

I know why you’re here. I am here for the same reason. Spore. That game gave us such high expectations about what evolution on an organism could be and we would get to play all through that to cop out at the very end and ever since the gaming community as a whole has been clamoring for a game that can do what Spore was supposed to do, with mixed results.

As far as a genetics game goes, Niche does many things incredibly well. It does not shy away from implementing relatively realistic traits on how to breed your creatures depending on what you need. Evolution doesn’t follow a straight path, it simply adapts to what a species needs at the moment. The game is played by turns instead of real time and your creatures have short lives which can made even shorter by the hazards of the world, needing to breed and produce new life often to keep the species and tribe going.

It is not all completely realistic, as your creatures can ‘specialize’. You can have a small sub-tribe of nimble gatherers, a sub-tribe of hunters or water-dwellers, and another one for defending against predators; all of them perfectly able to breed between each other and working for a common goal. Genetics also lets you put your hand to tweak luck and the ability to pick a few traits you want to see more often on every individual parent, as well as make the selection of differently colored coats or otherwise only aesthetic changes.

It is a sort of ‘pick your difficulty’ as you can survive for untold time in the ‘easy’ islands or try your luck into the harder ones that could wipe your whole tribe. There is no true ending or objective as much as a sandbox of worlds you can try to pick and match your little creatures to survive and thrive in. When you get bored of an island, you can always tell if you’re heading to an easier or a harder one.

I really really want to like this game. I love genetics games, and I'm generally a big fan of games with slow-ish progress. However, I just can't get over the learning curve. I hate that you get 3 actions a day, the way the gene mutations work is completely unclear, and the lifespans are WAY too short. I was hoping for something relaxing, where I would have the luxury of experimenting in a way less punishing way. Instead, every new game feels completely anxiety-inducing by running against the lifespans of these critters, and I don't dare have too many in my clan because they drain the food resources too quickly. The concept is very cute, but I just can't get behind the execution.

Niche is a unique, turn-based strategy game that feels similar to a board game, with elements of survival, monster-taming, and roguelike games mixed in. The object of the game is to evolve your animal bloodline(s) into whatever is best suited for survival in their environment. It is literally “survival of the fittest”, but with you at the genetic helm, responsible for strategically deciding which genes will be the most useful. If that sounds intriguing to you, I definitely recommend you give Niche a try.

Each turn, you can choose to move, mate, forage, hunt, and more. The specific actions you can take depend on your creature’s genetics. For example, I find the “Nimble Fingers” trait very useful in the beginning, which gives you squirrel-like hands that are great at foraging for nuts and berries. These hands are useless, however, for fighting predators or catching fish. Environments consist of randomly-generated islands with random creature encounters (friendly or hostile), plant life, and changing weather patterns.

This game is a must-try for biologists or anyone interested in learning about real-life genetics in a very simple and fun way. As the devs said, “While playing Niche, the player is introduced to the scientific mechanics of genetics (featuring dominant-recessive, co-dominant inheritance, etc). The game also features the five pillars of population genetics (genetic drift, genetic flow, mutation, natural selection, sexual selection).”

Niche offers both a story mode (not an in-depth story, but still fun) and a sandbox mode. Although some might find the gameplay repetitive, it does have a lot of replay value, as there are infinite islands and creature combinations you can come up with. If you are a biologist, or just Pokemon player who enjoys breeding for perfect stats, this game might be for you. Recommended.

ive caused chaos among thousands of families, and murdered twice as many nichelings. i have spread fear across the lands of the niche game, and made my subjects give up entirely on life. i always feel satisfaction and happiness when i see one die, or suffer from violent wounds. anyways, this game is really cool. the models are very whacky and i like the originality in each nicheling. it does get frustrating when the genetics are imperfect, though, that is part of making a species in the game. yeah.

I have been playing this game for quite some time, since 2017 and over 100 hours to be exact, and I have been almost completely satisfied with it. Niche to me personally is like a version of chess that is a lot more interactive, with your environment and predators being the enemy team. I prefer story mode over sandbox mode because making progress feels much more rewarding, you start with practically nothing and have to struggle your way to an easy survival, however sandbox mode is a lot more fun when you are trying to craft a story, a challenge, or just looking to play as a silly little god for a while.
I do however have some issues with some of the mechanics of the game. It takes a long time to create a pack of creatures most suited to their environment, which is a problem because predators show up fast and food disappears even faster, and all of that hard work can easily be ruined by a rogue gene (or a rogue male), so I don't really have the time to create creatures suited for their habitat, the best I can do is power through with extreme amounts of attack or gathering to survive any enemy or drought, so it feels like a lot of the genes are underutilized, imbalanced, and almost completely cosmetic. Of course it is a massive reward to get the nichling you wanted... but by then it's generally time to move, and sometimes to an environment completely opposite to what you were previously adapting to.
A lot of the aspects of this game is heavily reliant on chance, which I actually enjoy for the most part, it's exhilarating and adds an air of realism, however this chance based playthrough can sometimes bite you in the rear really hard and completely destroy your hard work, but sometimes this randomness will save you, and it will make you feel so so soooo good.
I have seen a lot of changes made to this game during my time playing it, but the updates have slowed considerably. Now I understand most games reach their goal in development and no longer add anything, that is perfectly normal and fine, we can't all be fortnite (and we don't have the same funding as it either). But this is a game where if there isn't something new, engaging, or something to work towards, you will get bored fast. I was very fortunate to be able to experience this game when it was still relatively young and there was constantly new features to keep me entertained. But there hasn't been an update that introduced new features in over a year, there is only so many times I can complete the game and do challenges before I lose interest. I don't blame Stray Fawn Studios for this as niche is not a very popular nor well known game, so the funding for these types of things isn't abundant, but I feel it is about overdue for new islands, genes, and/or gamemodes.
But in the end I love this game, I find myself coming back to it frequently because feeling responsible over a group of creatures' survival creates a feeling of responsibility, where if I'm feeling particularly worthless or depressed, I can create something great and thriving and know that it was all *me*.
7.8/10 who needs a therapist when you have silly little animals to care for

NIche is definitely a strategy and creative game for sure. If repetitiveness and luck aren't your thing, this might not be the one for you. It can be repetitive, but I love storytelling so It added a role play factor in it for me, which helped combat the routine that can be dull at times. Travelling islands are a great way to add a bit of challenge to it (if you go to harder ones, that is), even if I hadn't explored all of it yet, I just needed to prepare (and even then I would face starvation! but I overcame it and enjoyed the challenge). I would definitely recommend!

I would love to love this game, but every time I try to play I can never stay interested. The genetic evolution part is legitimately very cool, but that doesn’t matter because the core gameplay just isn’t fun. It’s too much of a chore to keep my critters alive. I feel like it would have been better if the game took another step wider.

To be more clear- micromanaging each individual in the tribe is a slog. I want to be able to set my creatures to tasks and then shift my focus somewhere else. I also think the Fog of War is bad. It makes planning for future turns practically impossible. It doesn’t make me feel like I need to breed better senses, it just makes me feel like I lack long term agency.

I see a lot of people saying how challenging this game is. As far as I can tell the only challenge is seeing how long you can be bothered to sit in one spot and do nothing.

All you do is collect berries, make a kid, and move on to the next completely identical island. There is nothing to do, your genes really don't matter, and you spend the whole time doing the same shit over and over. I'm not sure this is even a game. It's more like a boredom simulator.

Once you have found a berry bush and a nest the game is over. You've done everything there is to do.

Overall this game has really good game mechanics and graphics, and I would definitely suggest this game to others if you like strategy survival games!

I remember my favorite science subject throughout school was genetics and how they can make a person who they ultimately are. Punnett squares were one of my favorites, Niche got me as close to a hands on experience with this as possible. I could play with genetics and grasp an understanding of how they work and what role they play in survivability in species. I really recommend Niche and believe even schools should adopt this game.

One of my favorite game concepts ever, and it generally seems fun after playing a few levels. I was a bit put off by the seemingly low number of body parts available. After looking into it a bit more, I came to realize that the developers seem less interested in adding depth, challenge and complexity for longtime players at this point and more interested in increasing their sales through acquiring new players and porting the game to consoles and mobile.

Don't get me wrong, this looks like a decent if not great game as it stands by some standards. But for me, the lack of continued development combined with the lack of a modding API (and the devs have stated they have no intention to ever add it) is just to sad and disappointing for me to want to invest time into this.

There's challenging and then there's tedious. This is tedious. 3 moves per animal, per day, hard as shit to find new animals to mate with and then you finally find one and BOOM! You're dead.

Hard to get into it. Great concept, amazing art for the ads and videos but I sadly never got that far.

tedious, repetitive and annoying, you're doomed from the start if your two starting pairs have one of the same immunity's. if one of your members get's sick you may aswell send them on a death mission.

Also going to mention how usless story mode is, it's only used as a tutorial, nothing special happens with it as far as im aware, due to the fact of not being able to keep my tribe alive past 50 days.

Move, space bar, move space bar, move space bar. Click things to survive. Move about, die from time, or boredom IRL. I can't put my finger on it, but it isn't for me. I expected an evolutionary journey a la Spore, or a Cubivore (Gamecube) clone, but this appears to be nothing like either. You're the same animal variety every time. Maybe I didn't play it enough to experience it properly, but the first hour was boring.

LOVE.

1. It's a full game. No partial game for full game price nonsense. But they're still improving it, wow. Seems rare these days.
2. The plot (story mode) is simple enough for the game play while still providing a goal if you want it.
3. The critters are adorable and varied. The style is visually appealing.
4. Although it's simple, it teaches some very valid concepts about population genetics. I love games that teach real life concepts.
5. I'm maybe 60 hours in and have not discovered a bug or glitch that has been the least bit frustrating. A couple tweaks to settings were all I needed (for example, I accidentally hit space bar so many times my critters starved).

My biggest complaints are:
1. When managing larger groups (I had one with 67 critters) it would be nice to be able to mark a pair on the family tree, that I want to breed. So I don't need a notebook to keep track.
2. It would be nice if action point gems could be default color coordinated by gender. Or alternatively, for them to default to a selected color.
3. When in the family tree view, you can select a trait. Carriers for the trait without it expressed are marked dark blue, on a blue background. A different color would be nice. Additionally, trait selection erases black = dead. Making it a bit more difficult to figure out who can be bred to whom.

Seem like minor complaints? They are. If you like strategy and think the critters are cute, you'll like this game.

Niche is one of those games that I really wish to like, however it seems to fall short in right about every expect it claims to be
a game about GENETICS,SURVIVAL and STRATEGY

First, genetics,
while yes it does give the basics example being how genes are passed with the dominant/recessive chart that most of us are taught in fifth grade, it does not do more than that

As for survival and strategy, I will be addressing both of these under the issue of the games design,
Game balance in this game is a horrific mess to say the least, with there being a few genes that are go to in almost every biome regardless of scenario (Bird beak,Large body,Nimble fingers,Digging paw) and genes that are hot garbage even if you are in the biome they are meant for one example being EVERY SINGLE water gene due to the water areas being constantly short on food,no natural nests so you are forced to build your own(which is expensive and unsustainable) or return to land just to use a natural nest, which is obviously not the point of being in the water, or bat head which allows you to eat insects, insects are a very unreliable source of food that cannot be relied on
In fact, the game rewards you for using genes that are extremely generalist an example being bird beak which allows you to harvest fruit, dig for roots and crack nuts. It really does not make sense for a game called 'Niche' , to have its most effective and successful strategy be the one that encourages you to use the most generalist of genes

there is also more minor nitpicky issues where some genes are basically other genes reskinned and half of the genes you have just being fun pattern/colours for your creatures which have no gameplay impact at all

There is also inbreeding, the game gives each creature 2 immunity genes which are the letters A to J and a special gene for the story mode , if a creature has their 2 immunity genes be of the same type (example being AA or BB or CC) they will be sickly (basically permanently diseased), this is to punish players for inbreeding their creatures, however there are 2 issues with this mechanic, the first issue is that being sickly does not really do much except shorten the creatures lifespan which is not much of an issue because it still does anything a normal creature can and the system can easily be cheated by repeatedly breeding a pair until you receive 2 children that have no overlapping immunitys (example receiving a AC and a BD from AB and CD parents) and breeding those two children together to get perfectly healthy children, this can be repeatedly done unless you get very bad rng which is rare

The third problem is food, you can easily amass 1000 food on an early easier island and live for hundreds of days just off that as there is no food decay or any sort of system to prevent you from running through most of the game without caring about food at all, food is the biggest challenge you have to overcome in this game, the harder biomes are usually harder due to food there being hard to obtain but none of this matters because you can chose to spend fifty days amassing a obscene amount of food in an early island and go visit a harder one after, whenever you run out, the game always gives you the option to travel to an easy island to get more food again and travel back to a harder island

I have brought these issues up with the community and a common response I got from them was to go to a harder island, use the console to spawn/delete things or impose a challenge on myself, in which I have tried, going to a harder island does not change that the game is poorly balanced, imposing a challenge on myself did make the game harder but it just made it even more grindy in a bad way and who would like to stick into console to individually edit the genes of your 2-100+ creatures risking causing the save to get broken

I do not have high hopes of these issues being fixed as the developers seem to have moved to working on their mobile game and their upcoming game wandering village, perhaps if there was modding support the community could clean up the game ourselves, however there is not nor has there ever been mention of it

If you enjoy roleplaying, this is a good game for it as there is not any punishment for playing the game with subpar strategys or any true consequence to most things and has cute creatures

However if you are here looking for a strategy game about genetics and survival, this game is a strategy game which is so basic and bland and underdeveloped that your strategy really does not matter, a genetics game where genetics barely affects you in play, and a survival game which you have to suck very badly to not survive in
Basically it is like those fruit drinks you can buy at the store that says it contains actual fruit juice, but contains about a single drop of juice and the rest of it is artificial, whilst technically correct it is not really what you were expecting

This kind of saddens me because I really wanted to like this game hence putting 110 hours into it has a great concept but its execution was a very catastrophic failure I really tried to like this game, but with every minute it just disappointed me further

TLDR: Niche - a genetics survival game should be renamed Generalist - a roleplaying game

I'd have to say that I'm not a big fan of this game. Granted, I've only played a total of 40-ish minutes, but I can't recommend. Like I heard someone else say, I feel like it is just a bunch of chess pieces moving around, and unlike chess, it isn't slow in a good way. I just don't feel the vibes, and it is definitely not worth its sticker price to me. I can see how some people might like it, but I for one am certainly not one of them. For me, its not worth picking up on sale either.

Yes, I understand that the evolution takes a lot of time and it has been a lot of trials and errors in real sense.
But no, that doesn't mean that you can use that excuse to make the game real slow and tedious.
At first, i liked the game a lot because it seems like a good illustration of real evolution but taking turns and waiting for mating....etc just take so much time. The whole process to be the prominent one takes too much time and after a game over, you never feel like starting over because it's very boring.
Compared to the games that depict evolution like Spore, this game seems less entertaining largely due to being turn-based. If you are playing a game of evolution, the whole point is to see the thing you created thrive. Just seeing them move like a chess piece feels real lame. It's more like a board game than a computer game because the imagination requires a lot to make this game interesting.
In short, meh. The price is too high for the game like this. so not recommended

this game is really fun and addicting, however its really annoying when you have a really good pack going but suddenly they start dying out and youre stuck with one last animal and youre kind of stuck there, unable to bring your pack back. i would make it a little more forgiving, say it lets you bring back one animal of the opposite gender in order to not have to give up on all your lost progress. honestly, other than that, i really have no issues with this game and would highly recommend it. :)

Niche is an interesting concept with a poor execution. The animals you control are admittedly pretty cute, and the core gameplay loop is an interesting idea, but this feels very much like an early access project in multiple ways. Without clear player feedback, the game feels confusing and disjointed. With a lack of events or story or surprising incidences, the experience feels lifeless and quiet.

Good: The genetics system is an interesting concept, and one I'd like to see more of. Most of the randomized options that came out of the system were cute and fun to play with. Encountering strangers to mate with, to change your breed is a cool idea, and it's fun to see what's coming next. There's some neat interactables that provide a hazard or have to be approached a certain way that make you think out your moves a little.

Bad: The UI is clunky without any clear tooltips. The game is startlingly difficult, with everything and its neighbor wanting to kill you or mate with your clan while you're not looking, and I'm not even sure why some of the status effects were happening. Combat is one note when it does happen, and while I mentioned maps having some unique challenges, there's just far too few to cover for a general lack of content. While I like the aesthetic, it still feels very plain and unadorned.

Ugly: I'm going to hone in on the one bugbear that broke my heart about this game. The game fails to let you play with its genetics systems. Don't get me wrong, if you manage to find a wild animal out in the wilderness, you can see how the genetics will turn out, but with how infrequently you find other animals, you're not picking the best of possible mates, you're *praying* that you'll find a suitable option before you die. The system is so interesting looking, and I love the idea of it, but you rarely get to see it in action, and when you do, you're far more driven by circumstance than you are by choice.

Over all, I cannot recommend this title. It feels too unpolished and underdesigned, and it's not even designated early access. It's another example of a designer getting WAY too excited about a single system, and then not putting enough love in to the systems that will bring their idea to life.

Survival game based on biology and genealogy. You have a fox thing and need to breed other fox things - being careful of the traits they could possibly pass onto offspring, food supply, keeping safe from predators, etc.

On the surface, it seems simple but there's a huge amount of depth underneath.

Not a bad game, just not really my cup of tea. Those who are more interested in biology/genealogy might like it.

A fun and in depth game of genetics. If you like this genre of game this is good for you, It's quite difficult though.

Pros:
- Difficult
- Time consuming fun
- Pretty graphics
- Replayable
- Lots of content

Cons:
- No DLCS, once you finished the game that's it.
- Body shape in general doesn't vary, different species all together would be nice to work on.
- I occasionally have problems with FPS with a top of the range PC.

Conclusion:
It's a good game but it isn't for everyone, from my experience you need to have a decent PC and enjoy difficult games that may (or may not) make you rage after spending hours just to lose.

If you are the type of person that likes this kind of game, I don't think you need my recommendation.

For everyone else: This game is painfully slow. In many ways you could play this like a fishbowl while playing other games. That's the only way I can put up with it, playing this on the side while focusing on other things. For me it's an OK multitasking game. But to just sit and wait without being engaged in other things, this would just feel like work.

Alternately if you want to play a game while watching TV, this might also be OK. It's also a bit expensive for what it is, $18 is a lot for how repetitive and simple the actual game itself is. There's a steep initial learning curve, but once you grasp the survival mechanics the rest is just waiting to breed and popping out new kids.
-----------------------------

I'm going to quote another review here for emphasis:

Niche suffers from a disconnect between concept and actual game play. Time and space are abstracted to a degree that clashes with the game play, which largely consists of clumsily moving creatures around, for minutes or days or years or decades. Walking one step and plucking one fruit is all you can do for a day, hunting a creature from one end of the tiny island to another might take half your lifespan, but pregnancy comes overnight. Controls are bad, the graphical interface is atrocious. As if this was a mobile game, controls are geared for touchscreen, not the mouse. The most important resource of the game, the action points, are not even visible outside the creatures themselves, which means not at all much of the time, depending on camera angle and the sense you currently operate with.

From my perspective, this game, while fascinating in concept, is surprisingly clunky and amateurish in its core game play. It might be more fun if your expectations are brought down before starting.
---------------------------------

Note also: The games been given away in promotions and sold very cheap on sale, so if you can nab it cheap/free go ahead and see for yourself. Just don't pay full price and don't expect more than a very slow simulation about breeding animals to breed more animals to breed more animals to breed more animals to breed more animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals to breed animals ...

Oh and did I mention there's a lot of waiting and repetition while you breed animals ? OK, but just to be sure it needed to be mentioned again, because that's the game, waiting and breeding... and oh, never mind...

wandered lost and confused in the long grass seeking resources. Then died of old age before making any contribution to the gene pool.

All in all this strikes me as an uncomfortably spot on metaphor for my life.

I wanted to like this. But honestly, the level of complexity and micromanagement is just so much that it would feel too much like work to play it.

UI and UX are so bad. Somehow the game wants you to feel like you play on a tablet?

Niche – a genetic survival game. I’m not going to make the joke about how niche this game is, but… it is.

This is a survival strategy game. You play a pokemon looking creature who finds others of his species, mates with them, creates offsprings, forages for food, and… that’s about it. Each day you can move around the current island and decide what actions you’ll do. You can do anything from mating to gathering food and many things in between. From there you’re… I’m not sure of the goal of the game.

It’s not a very compelling game from what I’ve seen, though the animals are cute, I just found the game a little too difficult, and even then, I didn’t have a real purpose. It’s a rogue-lite I guess it’s about how long you can live and what you find but nothing I found seemed to change much in the game, I think this one is just going to appeal to a small group of people.

Niche just had nothing for me to come back to and I’m already starting to see a pattern in the game after an hour. It might get better somehow but with what appears to be one character type and a rather short lifespan it’s hard to connect to these characters. This is one that I think you can skip.

I've LOVED this game. The endless storylines that I've made, the pantheons of gods and goddesses, both that I've come up with myself and that I've come to know through the games of youtubers- The game is random and wonderful and *inspiring* and near and dear to my heart. I've played 400 hours of it for a reason, and intend to play many, many more.

Overall I couldn't recommend it. There is a good idea and foundation there but a lack of options and a repetitive loop make it hard to enjoy for long unless you have the same taste as what you are forced into.

+Genetics systems are interesting
+Art style and visuals are a little blocky but still nice
+Randomness of runs gives replay potential

-No game settings beyond audio/visual
-No difficulty options
-Very slow pacing, limited action points
-Populations are too small to play much with genetics
-Animals don't live long enough to matter
-Randomness means sometimes you have no chance

YES. OH HOLY GENETICS. Pros:
Awesome game, played for almost 300 or so hours, I CAN'T EVEN REMEMBER! Too good game.
Teaches about genetics, with many Possibilities to come.
Good graphics, but that doesn't matter for me. But if you are a graphics person, there you go!
Nice gameplay. Can be hard, but that's the challenge!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cons:
I erm, dunno what to say but-
Idk I just think there should be more genetics?
add more things to do?

An interesting strategy game that has some good elements but not my cup of tea. Clearing out the grass and moving around is a boring chore, several games ended after I entered an island and a rogue male infected my whole pack with a disease that just wiped them out. It's a harsh game, and the pace the game moves at just isn't one that I could figure out. I found failing was easy and fast, entering an island that you are suited for is a recipe for a quick massacre.

Game uses the flat, menuless, touch-screen style UI that is all the craze these days. I absolutely hate it. I want shortcuts and fast inputs, I want to quickly parse information. Moving around the islands requires a massive amount of clicking. This is the main reason I stopped playing. Most of the game is spent moving one hex, clearing some brush, ending your turn, and repeating.

The sense system is interesting, but I also needlessly annoying. You have to manually switch between vision, smell, and hearing when they could have just left all three on at the same time. Each turn begins by cycling through the senses before returning to vision.

The good parts are the skill system and breeding traits in your... ugh... venomous monkey deer foxes. It is kind of fun to breed them to be better at certain tasks. The art is simple, pretty, and fun. Environments, enemies, prey, and your venomous monkey deer foxes are all nice to look at. I do think there is a lot here that some people would enjoy.

A cute game that looks far more complex than it actually is. It becomes boring incredibly quickly, and even the optional goals of breeding your perfectly coloured/patterned creature are not very gripping.

Pro's:
-Clean aesthetic with calm music

-Thought was put into the genetics system. Not all inbred creatures are immediately doomed, since immunity genes matter more than parentage - making it an option in a pinch. You unlock 'new' genetics by performing actions that your creature may not be fit to perform with any kind of success, emulating 'survival of the fittest'.

-Complex genetics. There's several 'slots' for genetics, like the head, body, paws, hindpaws, ears, and horns. Each creature can carry dominant as well as dormant genes, making the game more complex and allowing even 'bad' creatures to be of use.

-Keyboard shortcuts. Playing this game with a mouse will give you RSI in a flash - thankfully there are some keybinds in place to switch from creature to creature, and to switch from smelling to hearing to seeing.

Cons:
-Lacking tutorial. The first hours of the game are spent trying to understand what you are even looking at, what the 'mutate genes' option even does, and how the afflictions like drowning, bleeding, and sickness work.

-A lot of the genetics option are too much of a hassle to breed. They are, ironically, too niche to work. When you get to a new island with a lot of insects and your creatures are fishers, you are better off just hurrying to the next island with your stockpile of food. Trying to adapt to this new island will require rebuilding your creatures genetics from scratch, and then the next island will turn out to be an island with fish again, and you'll have to go through the cycle again! It is far more lucrative to breed an 'all round' creature that can get food from 3-4 sources, and leaving some slots ( like ears or tail ) open for cold or hot islands.

-The aging mechanic makes breeding the creatures a thankless job. By the time you have grown attached they are already on their deathbed, and it trivializes half of the genetics you can influence. Why care about their colours and patterns and eyecolour if your critter will be dead in 20 turns anyway? ( Depending on the amount of creatures you have, a turn can last from a minute to five minutes )

-The options to smell and hear creatures around you is inspired, but ultimately not useful enough to focus breed into your animals. Some genetics increase the range of these abilities, but with your limited movement through grass and the importance of finding food, things like 'big nose' or 'blind eyes' are just genetic clutter that you don't want in your creatures. ( Unless it is for aesthetic )

-It is SO easy to get sick/inbred animals. Since you're trying to manipulate genes this makes sense, but the sickness resulting from inbred animals can spread like wildfire and reduce your creature's already abysmally short lifespans. There is no way to cure the illness other than to eat healing plants, which are not guaranteed to be on an island, and which only regrow after rain.

-It is difficult to keep genetic diversity AND your preferred genetics. When you are busy conquering one island you may only find ONE new creature you can invite into your pack. This makes breeding with them downright NECESSARY, even though they have messy hodge-podge genes that don't seem to connect to the island you are on. Whether you were trying to re-create puma's or trying to make a winged purple deer creature with golden eyes, you keep getting roadblocked by incest, and having to adopt new creatures that carry genes you don't want in your pack.

-All gameplay interactions are the same. Whether you are killing a rabbit, a bear, a parasite, a fish, or gathering berries, cracking nuts, or breeding - all you do is press a button and something happens. This makes the different manners of food gathering indistinguishable, other than the fact that you can only do it with the creatures that carry the right genetics.

-Grass and movement speed. You need to breed movement speed as well as the other attributes of your animal. If they do not carry the right body or paws or legs, they can only move one tile at a time, at a max of three spaces a day without doing anything else. This can be an easy fix since you do not get many leg options at the start of the game, but you cannot move fast in grass. You need to spend turns removing grass in order for your creatures to move around quickly. If you are low on creatures and in desperate need of new immunity genes due to inbreeding, you can only move three tiles per turn - lowering your chances to find a new creature significantly.

-Don't breed blind eyes. Going by scent and hearing might sound like an awesome creature to build, especially since scent allows you to see through grass, but having blind eyes keeps a creature from moving altogether, unless there is a non-blind creature next to them. What a way to cripple an otherwise cool genetic!

Summary:
The complexities of this game are lost in a repetitive gameplay loop that discourages attachment and encourages micromanagement. Survival can be easily achieved by breeding a messy bunch that can get food from 3-4 sources, and breeding for cool colourations or patterns feels like a waste of time due to the creature's short lifespans. UI is not explained by the game, and there are no simple ways to look at all the info you need to effectively play ( like a spreadsheet where you can see all your creature's immunity genes, as well as dormant and dominant genes )
Great for a couple hours of frustrated fun, but ultimately not worth a long time investment. There are a lot of cool ideas and concepts in here that have been simplified so much that they have boiled down to 'press button, get resources, breed animal, repeat'. A sad waste of potential.

pretty interesting game, but i can understand how some might find it boring.

you have to design creatures and usually the ones you get are all RNG. the game really boils down to a turn-based excel file.

i had a lot of fun with it, but i can see how it might be too slow for others. definitely recommend watching gameplay videos to see if this is for you, as there isn't a lot of action.

After 1 hour, you have seen the full game. Its a cool idea. I have been waiting for this game to go on sale for a bit, happy I did.

The life cycle is way to fast. You have to keep breeding to keep the tribe going , to breed you need to mate at that takes 2 turns. A full adult has like a 20 turn life. So most of the time you are just going to be playing leap frog with your cat's and mating... that's it . that's the game....

Interesting, with lots of details to watch and manage. It is easy to lose, and difficult to thrive – a great biology simulator that should probably be in the classroom during the fruit fly (genes and inheritance) unit.

It has a strategy board-game feel to it and after playing 1-2 hours anyone would know if they would enjoying playing 100s of hours, or if this is not for them.
