Grottenschlecht.

I will now prepare to list 10 comparable games that are better than Paranautical Activity:

Barony, BPM: BULLETS PER MINUTE, Gunfire Reborn, Heavy Bullets, Immortal Redneck, Post Void, Tower of Guns, Void Bastards, Ziggurat, Ziggurat 2.

Any of these are almost certain to give you a better experience, and the developers won't threaten your life.

well... i dont know what to say. im dissapointed and still i like the way this game is made.
run thru different rooms gather different weapons, the door shut behind you until you killed the opponents
and after you killed them you reach the next room. all in nice colors and nicely made BUT...
the weapon handling is very swampy and could be a lot better. i dont know..
for the little money its ok and it doesnt hurt that much that its not so good.

I got this for $1.50 thats about what I'd pay for its. This is a fun but very dated and unbalanced game. There are a lot of mechanics that are downright frustrating and a lot of weapons that are complete dog shit. But on the flipside there are a couple items that are totally broken and fun to exploit. I won on my third run thanks to a broken item combination, and the runs are quite long (7 floors/bosses) so I got to see a lot of the game. I think this game is something fun to play over one weekend or a day or two but it feels too repetitive to have the same staying power as Binding of Issac or Gunfire Reborn. If you are a fan of FPS roguelikes wishlist this and wait till it drops to 1-2 bucks.

Showed promise but is just too cheap by spamming cheap, difficult to avoid attacks at every turn to be fair or fun.

I am 95% sure, the game is broken.

Everything about this feels like an early demo, something that you would show to friends and family, to prove that you didn't waste the last year of your life. But you did....

Ah where to start. No tutorial of any kind, no controls menu, no context, no story, poor hit detection, poor room design, terrible UI, sometimes outright missing UI, bugged weapons, bugged gameplay.

The music is okay.

I think most of the enjoyment you'll get out of this game will come from the movement/shooting you'd expect from an arena shooter, which I think holds quite well into the roguelike environment that Paranautical Activity created. Being able to control your character is key, evading danger is the best way to stay alive and it makes for really exciting gameplay, especially with the variety of enemy types and attacks. Along your run you pickup new items or weapons that can change the way your run plays quite dramatically. Overall I think if you're really into the arena-shooter gameplay you should give this game a shot, although it doesn't have a whole lot more to offer past that, so beware

Abandonware after the original devs got kicked off the platform, then formed some sort of ghostwriter-style thing to keep the game on steam.

Maybe my brain is too old, and my hands too arthritic, but I can't get into this.

Paranautical Activity is a procedurally generated throwback to late 90's twitch shooters, where you're expected to be spamming jump constantly. Back then, jump dodging in a shooter was necessary to be competitive against online human players, but here it's the core gameplay mechanic, and even twenty years ago, I wasn't into it.

The game's a little too random. The kitchen sink vibe with weapons, power-ups, and enemies is kind of appropriate for the throwback vibe the developer is going for, but the level layout gets samey. Procedural generation is best used to create moments of emergent gameplay: here, I found myself hoping I'd run into bosses I was already equipped to deal with, rather than finding ways to use what I had.

The low-fi voxel graphics are good, as is the music (if a little repetative), but the gameplay just isn't what I'm looking for in a shooter.

eeehh... if you can get this game for like 2 dollars its a good buy. Its alright, kind of fun to see all the power-ups. I find the game to lack variety to continue playing for long after I beat it the first time. I was not a part of the kick starter. There is very little connection to all the concept and cover art you see in the game.. it looks like theres some kind of story with characters.. but none of that is made clear to the player.

I think I got old, can`t get more than a couple of rooms in before getting stomped. More often that not I`m killed by something I can`t even see as soon as I enter a room, I assume something has spawned under me but I really can`t tell, yes just seen an enemy spawn on top of me, that`s not good.
Some of the room layouts are very cramped and favour not being able to avoid enemy attacks reliably because you also have to contend with heavy inertia on your character yet you`re also very bouncy, it`s not a good combination. Enemies, pickups etc are also too hard to see when a lot of the levels are a sea of darkness.
Like others have said(years ago now.. I`m lazy, so what) there are way too many better examples out now for this to stand out. A shame because with a few tweaks this could be good, the basics are there. Graphics are simple but cute(although the voxel is overused by now) Music and Sfx are generall good too.
Maybe wait for a heavy sale or a bundle and have a c..p ton more patience and be better at games then I am.

There's barely any nautical activity in here.

Drama aside, overall pretty fun rougelite, kinda like voxel fps binding of issac.

* Menu's are very unpolished static Images with what is white slimey text which is very suggestive.
* Enemies are thematically random. No thought was put into the enemies you're facing.
eg. Sharks Swimming through Metal, Ninja's, Midget Wizards, Demons, Flying Rocket Turtles.
* Maps are very samey the more you play with no variation to area's (Everything is metal boxes)

Unlockables through Acheivements slowly feeding more content (Bosses, Guns, BuffsDebuffs)

All in All:
There are other games that do Roguelites alot better (like Ziggurat).
If you get this free, it's worth giving a quick play.
Otherwise, I wouldn't recommend buying it.

Let's neglect the fact that the original dev was a huge dick to everyone. Let's neglect the fact he raged like a child for a simple fixable reason and said some messed up things on twitter. Let's neglect the fact he outright cheated the original music composer out of pay, after he put personal pursuits on hold because he was told he'd get paid. Let's neglect the fact that the game got taken down off steam, bought out by a new publisher, and brought back to steam.

Its still an obsolete version of Ziggurat. While there are differences, in just about every regard Ziggurat is a superior game and your money would be better spent on that. This game was enjoyable for the nonexistant price of a humble bundle game, but I can't recommend spending any more than $5 on this.

Wow! I did *not* expect this game to be so addictive and absolutely satisfying. A long-overdue and well-executed fast-paced, circle-strafing, old school twitch shooter feel with a lot of elements very much like Binding of Isaac (a very good thing, and I mention the likeness only to its credit.) Different starting characters/builds with different stats and starting weapons to choose from, randomized/procedurally generated rooms and floors, health/armor/gold/bomb drops off enemies, shops on each floor, tons of unique personal upgrades to buy or earn at the end of each floor, etc. With even more content to come, and co-op multiplayer on the way (dear god yes!), I haven't been this pleased with and addicted to any indie title since FTL.

Most importantly, the core controls and mechanics are an absolute joy. The pace and precision of the controls and the action feel absolutely spot-on. This is something many games destined for mediocrity have overlooked in lieu of trying to do everything else. When it comes down to it, the core mechanics, the precision and pacing of the controls of any shooter are at *least* half of what we either enjoy or can't stand about them. And more often than not, we barely even consciously realize that, if at all. Paranautical Activity absolutely nails it in terms of *exactly* how a shooter like this should feel, and it's a feel that is too rare these days. As a pure gaming experience, this one is a huge breath of fresh air. Bravo!
