One of my all time favorite horror games. I love this game so much. This is a unique and different horror experience that you have to try. The aspect of being blind and exploring through darkness was incredible. There's not another game that fits in this category. The adrenaline rush of running blind and finding a hiding spot was truly amazing. The story was phenomenal and the end had me jumping out of my seat. This is a beautiful masterpiece that everyone should try out. PLEASE TRY THIS GAME OUT.

Cool idea, not as well executed as what I would have hoped. Tap the ground. See your surroundings. Ghosts are attracted by noise. Game flies off the handle at dolls with guns. Could have been a great investigative horror game but studio focused on action instead. Makes me sad. Still worth a play.

A really creepy game. The atmosphere and the story are unsettling and some parts are disturbing, but in the end, it ... well, I am not spoiling the ending. The levels get progressively more difficult but in a natural way. You literally have to figure out the path and progression, but it serves the purpose well. Great mystery horror non-combat game.

The concept COULD HAVE been scary but the clunky level design and over-helpful glowing green things in the house really take the fear out of the equation. Overall, meh.

Perception, when Daredevil goes Powerless

Play ad a blind person which has the ability of echolocation, who tries to find out the reason for her nightmarish dreams.

Pros:

  • Unique concept
Code Game is purely black unless you're using echolocation by tapping your cane against objects/walls/ground.

Cons:

  • Boring when being cautios
  • Code If you walk around and don't over use the cane, there is no danger at all. Avoiding red color aura is way to easy and there are no dangers around unless that one ghost which appears when you maked to much noise.
(Including Puppets which shoot guns, but they are pretty much immobile.)

  • Intense and with much tension
  • Code but it does not feel like a horror game.
    [/list]

    Verdict:

Great expirience how it feels to see nothing, but it's a plain world.

A very creepy and interesting game with good gameplay mechanics.
The story is easy to follow and the ending literally explains everything, which is a huge plus. I thought that the game might be hard because of the view but you get many hints, if you need them and it never feels frustrating or unfair.
Great game, I enjoyed my time.

The idea of playing as a blind person and using echolocation to find your way is really cool, and the visualization of it in the game is also implemented in an interesting way. Other than that, this is another walking simulator with a couple moments where you have to avoid enemies. But mostly you just walk around the house, bump into walls and furniture and look for a way further.

And the things that typically make walking sims great are subpar here. Unlikable protagonist with no real character (even though she talks a lot), underwhelming writing and ending, no option to skip monologues and animations. And, of course, thanks to the game design and the blind person thing the visuals are primitive.

Moreover, sometimes the developers restrict running, and you have to slowly walk in a straight line while nothing happens. Sure, this is a walking sim, but do you really need to disable running so I walk along a boring corridor for a minute instead of 20 seconds? Actually, this is what finally made my decision not to recommend the game. And also when you have to cut down a tree, I was running against said tree for several minutes looking for a spot where I can use my axe. Again, why does it have to be so obnoxious? Does a tree have only one tiny spot where you can hit it with an axe?

Wow, was I surprised how great this game was. Kinda minimalistic in it's look but they*ve made the best of it and it worked surprisingly well, at least for me. Excellent sound and voice acting, story was ok. Not too hard, but also not boring. Got addicted to the gameplay-mechanics and it felt really interesting to be a blind person and know how to help yourself with that. It'a short game, don't look on my playing time, got it on tab four hours. It even get's frightening sometimes, because of it's atmosphere and great sound effects. Dev's really seem to know what they are doing. So this game felt like a hidden gem for me and is clearly recommended.

This was good! It's mainly a story game, the horror is in service to that.
I normally can't play horror games because they're too scary for me (especially not in first person), but this one was fine.

I wanted to like this, and it starts out well, but the twists are predictable and the game play boils down to navigating your way through corridors. It's not scary and the story is too basic to be compelling.

This game is pretty short, but it is by far one of the scariest games I've ever played. Being blind and only able to see by sound makes every little noise and potential thing in the room with you so much more terrifying than if you could see it. Not much going on gameplay wise, but the story was super interesting and really made me want to see it to the end. Cassie is an endearing protagonist, too. I loved being in her shoes, scary as it was!

I am blind so perhaps it is no surprise I really enjoyed this game. It's a short run time but just right, cutting off before the conceits of how you hear and move around start to annoy you. I am impressed they included actual versions of things blind people use all the time, like an in-game version of the Be My Eyes app. Building a relationship with the character who keeps answering only for him to get possessed by The Presence was quite chilling.

I also enjoyed the twist that none of the people who were haunting the place were what they seemed. It also gave me serious The Yellow Wallpaper vibes in that sexism is in and of itself its own antagonist. It was heart breaking to hear Betty try to join the war effort only to have letter after letter telling her to calm her pretty head and join a bakesale instead.

Fun story, interesting mechanisms for exploring the world, and vivid imagery painted through words and fleeting visions instead of the sight so many take for granted.

THIS IS A MIXED/NEUTRAL REVIEW! TL;DR: SKIP TO CONCLUSION!

Perception is an atmospheric horror adventure game, where you play as a blind woman. Even though you can’t see, you have extremely heightened senses that allow you to see using echolocation. You set off alone to investigate an abandoned mansion you saw in your dreams. After venturing inside, a ghost-like presence starts to haunt you. Unable to escape the house, you begin to unravel the mysteries of Echo Bluff, and learn the truth behind the deaths of its previous inhabitants that spanned over generations.

To ‘see’ around you, and make your way through the mansion, you’ll need to tap your cane on the ground to create sound. It’s an interesting twist on games that are typically just set in dark places. The range on the echolocation is very large, and most things are visible as if you could see clearly. This echolocation ability has no cooldown, and you can spam it as much or as little as you’d like. I’d even say that it gives too much visibility.

The other activated ability you have is called sense. Sense allows you to see what your next objective is and where it is located. This also lets you see your goal through walls, so you know where to go, but have to find the way to get there.

A lot of the game feels like a walking simulator with jump scares scattered through it. There are a couple enemies that you encounter. I admit that the dolls are pretty creepy, but the main enemy is ‘the presence’ that haunts you. When the presence aggros you, everything turns red, and you need to run and find a hiding spot. The presence was intimidating at first, and it felt pretty tense, but as the game progressed, the presence became a mere nuisance.

    Pros:

    • unique gameplay mechanics to ‘see’ around you using echolocation and sense
    • the way that the mysteries and stories unfold is interesting
    • very appealing graphics style - the way that everything is lit up and revealed by sound looks neat, especially when the wind is blowing
    • music and ambience are very effective at creating an immersive atmosphere that feels very eerie and tense (at first)
    • some of the voice acting is decent (but some of it is not, such as the children's voices)

    Cons:

    • some massive plot holes, and some other smaller things that make no sense
    • as the game progresses, the tension sort of dies off as the gameplay loses its charm
    • aside from the initial tension, and a couple jump scares, the 'horror' aspects are very underwhelming (the pursuits feel anti-climatic, and having to run and hide is just an inconvenience that wasn't even remotely scary)
    • (nitpick) some issues with audio tracks overlapping each other and playing at the same time
    • (nitpick) keyboard and mouse controls are not customizable (but most people will be okay with the defaults WASD, C, space, control, M1), and there is only partial controller support
    • (nitpick) respawn locations if you die are sometimes really far back from where you were (it's better to exit to menu and then resume to start back closer to where you originally died)

The game took me a bit over 3 hours to finish, and that was with me getting stuck for roughly 15 minutes after I died once, when I got lost trying to find my way back.

    Purchase:

Perception is an okay game. While it has a really cool concept and unique style that draws you in early on, the gameplay doesn’t hold up long term. The horror elements fall flat quickly, and aside from a few jump scares here and there, a lot of the game play feels more like a walking simulator. If you’re looking for a horror game, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere. If you’re just looking to experience the echolocation gameplay and story, keep in mind that the game is very short, and you might want to wait for a sale price.
