Sorry.

good story, but it's dated. If you can get past the clunky UI and controls, then it could be worth it. Also some of the dialogue options are buggy and give away stuff you haven't uncovered yet.

Word of advice, your display has to be 1920x1080 to get the game to launch. My gaming monitor is 1440 by default. I kept getting a 3D rendering error when trying to launch the game in 1440. Once I got the game to launch correctly I have enjoyed the game so far. Nice point and click detective game from 2002.

Desperately lacking in some quality of life functions.
Can not be set to windowed mode nor can its resolution be changed.
Crashes if you tab out and back in.
Dialogue can not be skipped, and the selection screen is bulky.
Looking around a panoramic rooms for potential small interaction points is not ideal.
Writing is rather bland, I found the set-up to be uninteresting and uninformative to my goals.
The establishing shots of locations are neither lovely (even for their age) nor informative.
The first interrogation (accepting the job) felt off, like the characters were responding to slightly different dialogue, or didn't make sense (Asking do you know where the victim was murdered instead of just asking where, asking if they were sure that it was murder, even though she hired a PI).
Voice Over work is only tolerable.

pros

+ a intriguing story about serial murders to do with a esoteric sect. apparently the story was inspired by lovecraft's stories.
+ many mysterious and interesting characters
+ dark atmosphere
+ well made cinematics and cut scenes
+ some fun puzzles
+ mostly good voice acting
+ nice musics
+ there are 4 endings

cons

- poorly designed dialogue system causes conversations make no sense the most of time
- dated, blurry and dark background graphics
- puzzles getting frustrating towards to end
- games using Myst style 360° views. this is not so bad thing but little bit clanky and hard to use in this game
- unskippable dialogues
- some pixelhunting
- there are no steam achievements and cards

Overall this is a fun game which has an well written and engaging story, but the game mechanics are quite dated. therefore I recommend you to play this game with a walkthrough.

Let’s start with the positives: Post Mortem is designed in a way that you can take different approaches to your investigation, for example, you can be upfront about being a PI when interviewing witnesses, or lie and say you’re at reporter or an insurance investigator. Different characters respond differently – one will jump at the chance to help a PI (so adventurous!) while another will distrust snoops, but help an insurance man, hoping to get a cash settlement. This will yield different leads and can change the sequence in which you meet different witnesses and suspects, as well as the locations that unlock for you to visit.
In theory, you get a very dynamic story unfolding, and at times, you actually feel like an investigator following leads and going where the clues take him.
Notice the qualifiers in that last sentence? Microids clearly bit off more than they could chew and numerous design flaws cripple an otherwise engaging murder mystery.
- The above-mentioned dynamic structure can lead to you “failing” dialogues – the recommended way to play this game is to save before talking to anybody, and reload if you completely botch it – but there’s no way to skip dialogue so you’ll sit listening to the same awkwardly-paced lines over and over again.
- This also makes replaying the game more tedious – but it’s clear that the devs intended for you to replay the game, either to see how different approaches turn out, but more likely because you realize at the end of your first playthrough that you missed clicking on a pixel that represents a piece of evidence that you’ll need for the good endings.
- Speaking of which, the “first person view” – actually rendered fully 360° images you navigate through hot-spot jumping – makes finding and interacting with objects a chore.
- Also, the dialogue was clearly translated looking at lines in isolation, not the entire script, because you often have mismatched terminology and unfitting reactions. Also, the English translation is pretty bad at times – the translator was obviously struggling with idioms. For example, somebody describes the police chief – who you already know is deliberately dragging his feet on the investigation – as “bending over backwards working on this case. He didn’t even cross-check the witness statements”. My guess is whoever wrote this thought “bending over backwards” meant the same as “laid-back/relaxed/lazy” when it’s the exact opposite.
- Worse still, the devs failed to account for all of the possible paths that the aforementioned dynamic story-telling can yield, causing potholes and awkward lurches in story progression. In my playthrough, the main character started interviewing people about the main MacGuffin – which he had never heard of before.

On the technical side, users of newer Windows versions will need 3rd party fixes or mess with the compatibility setting for this to start at all (set the game.exe to Reduced color mode - 8-bits, and do it through the “Change settings for all users” dialogue too), and if you have multiple monitors, if your mouse leaves the game screen and clicks, the game will crash.

So, I’d only recommend this game to mystery investigation fans, adventure game completionists, people who like to chuckle at weird translations, and people who enjoy ambitious attempts at presenting something engaging, even if the devs didn’t manage to realize it fully.

I did enjoy this game.
However, i disliked that you have to complete puzzles in a certain order or risk being locked out of certain locations. I've never encountered this problem with a point-and-click game before. I had multiple instances of being unable to collect certain items and i was unable to visit a location because i completed an unrelated puzzle too early.

Post Mortem is a 2002 adventure game from Microïds, better known for Syberia, and the humble beginnings of the Still Life series. I won't be comparing this title to Syberia (also released in 2002) as that game had a substantially higher development budget compared to Post Mortem.

Developed in 10 months, Post Mortem was created with a non-linear storyline in mind, allowing players to progress using varied approaches in dialogue and even features a fork in the story midway through. This in itself is a compelling enough reason to check it out, however this is not without some sloppiness (caution for spoilers, skip to next paragraph if you care): one example is where Gus McPherson, our protagonist, somehow knows Malet is dead without being told they are (though the player can definitely be clued into this event at the point this occurs), if I recall correctly this also can also occur when speaking to Bebe at the Alambic when choosing certain dialogue options skipping past the reveal that Hulot was murdered which can be jarring given the importance of that reveal. On the opposite end of this issue, Gus can seemingly forget information he has previously learned such as the remark he makes when picking up the engraved ring in the hotel room if he had already learned who Faye is (had the player taken the office route through the game). The later example may be related to a bug in the game though the former is definitely an oversight by the developers.

Despite that narrative fault the actual story and mystery do remain engaging, though I wish the characters were more compelling. Gus McPherson, who would later return for Still Life, is honestly remarkably annoying (+cringe) and the weakest character in both titles and I will not elaborate further on that. On the puzzle side of the game, there aren't many examples of moon logic certainly not as egregious as other games of the era, it's rather straight forward and there's only one real case of pixel hunting which occurs in the fresco puzzle. Even if you fail to complete one of the puzzles or miss an item, you can still reach the end of the game though you won't get the best ending (as far as I'm aware there are four different endings). The game is also relatively short, so if you can pick it up cheap you may as well, especially if you're interested in the later Still Life games.

For all the things I enjoyed about Post Mortem I still find it hard to recommend. I picked it up for next to nothing in the Microid sale so if you really really like your detective point and click adventures, then there is definitely value here if it's going cheap.

PROS
+ I loved the 1920's parisian setting
+ Cast of characters are well voiced, not many attempt a french accent but it was decent enough
+ Story is somewhat cliche but also really engaging, all the twists and turns you want from a detective crime thriller
+ Clearly although obviously lower budget, some polish and love went into the visuals, art style and sound design
+ Although not generally touted as a horror game, it is dripping with atmosphere. Murders are really grisly, and two cutscenes actually jump-scared me!
+ A second character perspective comes in around quarter way into the game which was unexpected
+ Some amazing puzzles here to solve, on par with Frogwares Sherlock games
+ PS1 era cutscenes are endearing to me

CONS
- It wasn't a major hassle but I had to look up a guide to get this game to run on Windows 10
- The branching storylines felt very ambitious but poorly executed. I often found dialogue coming up out of sequence which leads to confusion
- The inventory was terrible. You will pick up lots of items which you won't know what they are unless you hover over them in inventory. But inventory scrolling is slow and cluttered. Often item icons are identical
- Some wacky sounds going on in the games ambience, I am guessing it is supposed to be ragtime playing in a bar nearby but it's mixed so poorly and out of place. You can be having a conversation and you won't hear them under this sound
- I got to about half way through where I had to submit to a guide. I don't think Iv'e ever felt as stumped by a game in terms of progression. Turns out i'd missed alot of stuff, picked up tons of items for other story paths and thought i'd hit a dead end only to find i'd missed a tiny pixel item from hours ago
- The polish as mentioned before only goes so far with the graphics. I enjoy the pre-rendered environments but sometimes 'people' are part of the background, no movement and lifeless. This looks bad, and the npcs have weird jittery mouths? It's a jarring and alien experience
- Dialogue has no skip feature if you hear the same speech again which is irritating. There is no going back on speech options either which I found out the hard way. This isn't clear going in mind you

Overall I did enjoy parts of the game and the ending I got was pretty decent. Some people have apparently experienced game breaking bugs. I did have a few crashes that booted me back to steam but nothing major as you can save whenever. I mainly wanted to check out Still Life and noticed there was a prequel game I could play first. I think this game has some good story points and puzzles, I think looking back I was more infuriated or bored beating my head against a wall due to it's poor execution to really recommend it.

I was in the middle of playing a game called Still Life when I read that it was spiritual sequel to this game. I was curious so I decided to put Still Life aside for a moment and power this one and I have to say its rather dull. You play as a wannabe artist who used to be a detective now living in france, he gets vague visions of a murder via some weird cognition. Not long after he's hired by a mysterious woman to investigate that exact same murder. Only to soon discover there's more to it then anyone expected.

Now with macabre feel to the game I expected it to be bit more entertaining but throughout my playthrough I could only but feel bored by it all. The voice acting, the investigating, even the puzzles all felt so dull. Despite the consistant themes of death there's little life to this game. Even for an adventure the dialogue are often clean and to the point, no sense of personality and if there is any its hampered by weird voice acting. You cant even interact with the world or get the characters opinion on what he's looking outside of conversations. The whole game basically a big investigation about proving someone innocent and your success at the end of the game is reliant on finding all the clues needed to solve it.

Even after getting the best ending I still feel like I didn't get anything out of this exprience except a bit more history behind the grandfather of the main character from Still Life and that even then it really didn't offer anything but a short and ultimately forgettable mystery.

Post Mortem is a detective themed point-click adventure game in which you investigate a mysterious murder. Story of the game is about a murder of a couple which was taken place in a luxury hotel in Paris. As you play and reveal the mysteries about the murder, you will find out that the story is much more complicated than it seems at the beginning. The story really manages to attract your attention from the beginning to the end. Game mechanics are very simple and easy to understand. Gameplay is in first person view. Graphics are not good but they are certainly the last thing you will ask for as to gameplay. Like any other classical point-click game, you interact with environment and collect the necessary objects you will use. But this game is mostly based on dialogue and it is its distictive feature. You always talk to characters in this game. You have lots of choices in dialogues and you need to make the most proper decision in order to progress. There are also some puzzles which vary in difficulty and the atmosphere is always dark and rather scary from time to time and it plays an important role in attracting your attention. Post Mortem might not be a great game, but it definitely offers a satisfying experience for the fans of point-click genre.

It's a pretty game, didn't see much polish, but definitely seen love while being developed. It's a detective story that takes place in the mid 1920's France. The game has an interesting plot and the story pleases you while you are slowly unfolding it. In the end, you just connect the dots like a real detective and it gives you the sweet satisfaction of figuring all the things out. The game can be boring sometimes due to the dull and uninteresting dialogues but the real deal is its compelling atmosphere and the memorable puzzles. Game has some decent puzzles with interesting concepts that will challenge you but also entertain you with its clever solutiıons and you'll wish there were more of them. If you like oldschool point&click adventure games, you can give it a try. Afterall it's not that much of a long game.

Despite I liked the game, I can't recommend it, because of all of its flaws, it's near unplayable.

Pros:
+ Good music
+ Good ambient
+ Somewhere below all of the incoherent narrative and the nonsencial dialogue there is a decent plot
+ Non-linear progress

Cons:
-Buggy
-The game changes basic gamplay mechanics randomly
-The dialogues are a total mess
-The narrative is incoherent and very hard to follow
-Trial and error is the main mechanic of the puzzles. Some of them can only be beaten that way.
-Some very nasty pixel hunting (specially at the picture puzzle near the end)

Beautiful art and good music, especially for when it was made. Has a really compelling story that I can't finish because of a bug... I can't get the door to the crime scene (room 507) to open even though I have the key. I've looked through the forums and guides and got nowhere. Sad but I'll have to let this one sit and maybe try again some day.

I'm torn between recommending this game, and advising others should skip it. I had an enjoyable time playing through it and absolutely love mysteries, and in that case the game delivers. I found some of the music to be a bit grating, but others to be oddly enjoyable and still have them stuck in my head. It had an interesting story, but for a lot of the exploration I felt like I was just bumbling around aimlessly without any idea where I needed to be, or when I did know, I had missed a small item elsewhere and needed to backtrack a significant distance to find it without any idea of where or what it actually was.

If you're curious enough to play it yourself, I'd recommend playing the first half completely blind, but maybe look up a walkthrough for the second half.
I look forward to checking out the sequels, however from what I can tell you don't need to play this game to understand their story.
