Pyre
Pyre is the third game released by Supergiant Games, and it's by far the most experimental out of the four games that they've created thus far. It's through and through a visual novel with a dash of competitive sports mixed into it. You will be spending the vast majority of your time listening and reading about the lore, characters, and world of Pyre rather than actually playing it. So, fair warning: If you dislike visual novels, or if you're just the kind of person who'd rather not read a lot while playing your games, then I would advise that you think twice about buying this game. With that out of the way, let's talk about Pyre, and whether or not I think it's worth playing. Short answer, maybe, but with a strong leaning toward yes. Let me explain. Just like with any games created by Supergiant Games, it's going to look great and sound great. It's excellently written, and the sports mini-game was done well enough that it ended up being the highlight of the experience for me; It's not perfect by any means, and I can definitely see a lot of people being frustrated and put off by certain aspects of it. Thankfully, I didn't have any personal problem with it and was able to adapt to its novel controls and gameplay. There are also light RPG elements thrown in here like having the ability to level up characters and choosing basics builds for them and being able to buy and sell talismans to better enhance your athletes. There are a total of 26 games that you could play in, and they're spread out periodically between moderately lengthy reading sections. And that's pretty much it for the gameplay department. Let's move on to the story and characters. To put it bluntly, this is the category where I have the most contention with this game. Just like what I stated earlier, a good sizeable chunk of Pyre will be spent reading and learning about the characters, their motivations, and the history that influences their world. So, it stands to reason that if you don't find all of it compelling and interesting, you're going to have quite an unengaging time with the story, and the game overall to a certain extent because of it. And that's where I fall on this list. In short, I didn't appreciate the story very much. Don't get me wrong; It's not badly written in any way, far from it. It's just personally, it's not my cup of tea. Strangely, I struggle to make sense of why, but it could be a combination of personal reasons and preferences rather than anything objective. That's why even though I didn't personally enjoy the story and world of Pyre, I can at least see why many people would. All in all, Pyre is a wonderful title with some of the best visuals, colors, and music that you could find in a video game. It's definitely my least favorite out of the four games from Supergiant Games, but even their worse received game is still one of the best experiences that this genre and this industry has to offer; That's how freaking talented this team is; They punch so far above their weight that it's not even funny. With my praises over, let's draw this review to a close. Due to the novelty of the game both in its story and gameplay, I'm going to recommend buying it on sale for a guaranteed safe purchase.

???? Description
Among the many Indie games created in the past years, Pyre captivated me the most, by far. From the unique art style to its emotional gripping story, this action RPG proved once again why Supergiant Games remain the majordomes of the Indie franchise. Even though by many, it is considered an underdog, I feel comfortable saying that Pyre will captivate even the most demanding players.???? Plot
Summary Greetings Reader, what kind of atrocities have you committed that led you to this wretched place? Whatever your intentions are, you now abide to the secret laws of the Rites of Flame, an ancient competition through which the worthiest exiles can return home, absolved of their transgressions. Even though I should not be mending with the affairs of the likes of you, I find a peculiar interest in your progress and remember, freedom is a privilege, yours has been revoked, good luck… Narration Most of the allure in the word of Pyre is delivered through its amazing narrative. The plot in general is carried by a beautiful cast of characters, each with a complex backstory and purpose. In coordination with the beautiful scenery runs smoothly, bringing both the anticipation and excitement I personally need. Last but not least, I find the multipath narration a brilliant concept, as it brings out an endless stream of engaging dialogue.????️ Gameplay
Compared to Supergiant Games’ past releases, Pyre offers an innovative playstyle that relies on a sport like game.Rites
As mentioned briefly before, Rites, also known by the name Rites of Flame, are an ancient competition where two Triumvirates (teams) compete. Each Rite is conducted when the eight Scribe Stars (the big stars in the sky) align in specific locations, which in the end results in a basketball like competition. Rules To begin the rites, two of the nine Triumvirates must meet in a specific location. Each member must be dressed in raiments (clothes) that represent their Triumvirate, as well as carry a copy of the Book of Rites. They must set their metal sigil on the ground and recite the quoted prayer in order to set the pyre (equivalent to life points) alight. Only three exiles can represent each Triumvirate and must act as a single mind. In short, only one person can move at a time. The teams are also allowed to have a reader, the person coordinating the Triumvirate’s actions, a role that the player must fulfill. Whoever extinguishes the opponent’s flame first wins. How to play When a rite is commencing a shooting star (the ball) falls from the sky right to the middle of the field. Each exile can seize the ball with the goal of throwing it into the opponent’s pyre. There are two ways of achieving this action / either you jump with the ball into the pyre or throw it. In case you choose the first option, a small cooldown will prevent the exile scoring from returning into the battlefield. In case you choose the latter, no cooldowns / restrictions will be placed. You can pass the ball or even drop it, that depends completely on you, but there are certain limits. Limitations From the beginning till the end of the skirmish, each adversarie (player) will produce a small aura (circle) around him that can banish (remove from the game for a number of seconds) the opponent. An exile can also cast (throw) his aura, which will have the same effect. However, when it is done, the aura will disappear for a couple of seconds, as it becomes temporarily absorbed by the orb. Each exile has a unique cast and jump ability, so be sure to check them out.Difficulty
As in every Supergiant Game, difficulty can be adjusted depending on the player’s needs. Here we have the Titan Stars, a way of reinforcing the difficulty of the battle, either by boosting the opponent or debuffing the player’s Triumvirate. Playing skirmishes in higher difficulties will reward the player with additional XP.Stats
The duration of the cooldown, as well as the size of the aura and the quickness of a character, depend completely on three major skill points that can be upgraded in many ways further into the game. The following table shall explain in detail all the stats:Description | Name |
---|---|
The amount of damage done to a pyre after this character manages to get the orb into the pyre. | Glory |
The range of the character's Aura. | Presence |
It’s rather self-explanatory. | Quickness |
Abilities
As mentioned before, each exile is unique-from his background to his abilities. The more rites the player encounters, the more enlightenment (experience) his team will gain. It does not matter if it’s a loss or win, the fact that someone commits to the rites brings knowledge and glory. After each level-up, the player can spend his skillpoints in a skill tree. Even though the number of skills you can unlock is limited for every exile, the benefits provided are very worthy, as they can determine the course of each skirmish.???????? Graphics
As in previous Supergiant Games the art style never ceases to impress. The character design is expressive, with unique features that make even the smallest detail relevant. The various locations resemble the ones pulled from a children’s book, a feature that I personally find special. Last but not least, I stress enough the unique character animations that stand out during each skirmish.???? Soundtracks
The environment and sounds blend perfectly with the cartoonish scenery they represent. I should also mention here that the game features its own partial language! But among all those special features, Darren Korb (music director) once again blew my mind with his gorgeous music. Even to this day the ”Vagrant Song” lightens the gloomy mood in the atmosphere, reminding me of the much beloved Pyre experience…????️ Side Notes
Too much lore As you have noticed above, in order to comprehend completely the story and the whole purpose of the adventure, you need to get accustomed with certain terms provided by huge pieces of lore. Even though I personally enjoy reading, many are not so intrigued with such concept. Multiplayer Among the most fun and exciting features of the game! Having to play with someone using tactics and strategy is an amazing experience that I definitely recommend. However, even though the game reaches its maximum potential when experienced together with a friend, the online player base more than dead. Pyre doesn’t have online multiplayer, a huge mistake for such a good game.???? Verdict
From the art to the music to the story, Pyre is a disastrous on paper idea that was handled correctly. It’s a perfect combination of fun unique adventures combined, resulting in an emotionally charged ending. I consider it a game that excels in every area of its design and thus deserves the much-needed attention!

The good:
Classic supergiant quality. The art is superb, the backgrounds detailed, and colours everywhere. Art, sound and general design is as great as it can be. No arguments there. The bad:
The game gives you a list of characters to play, but you start losing them one by one. This means that as the game progresses you have LESS options on what to do. Compare this to the typical RPG game where as you progress you gain new abilities. The game teases you and says that you need to find combos between your characters as a game hint, which is stupid, if you don't have enough characters to play with. The main game loop (some story, some dummy choices and a 3x3 round of fantasy basketball) is very short. It quickly becomes repetitive. And with the loss of characters it becomes even more boring. The ugly:
The game has adaptive difficulty. If you start losing, the enemy team does stupid things. You see them have a clear opening and they sit there doing nothing. If you are winning, the enemy team gains great speed and uses some unblockable moves to score. One of the favourite moves of the cpu is to bring a player close to your basket/pyre and then move the ball back by a very long distance to another player close to their pyre/basket. The camera starts panning and you lose your orientation. Then the cpu throws back the ball to the first player close to your basket and they score before you had a change to understand what happened. There is no incentive to get better if you know that the way you play does not really matter. Frankly if this wan't a supergiant game I would never have bothered with Pyre. It seems also that the company realized the problems with this game format, as the next game (Hades) is hopefully an RPG.

Overview
Pyre is a party-based RPG that is a slight mix between fantasy-basketball and a visual novel. Now, that does sound confusing, but rest assured, you're not alone. As strange as the genre may sound, Supergiant Games has managed to combine all of those elements found in team-based RPG's, combined them with a sports-like gameplay inside of a fantasy setting, while creating character arcs the player feels invested in. I was initially hesitant to check this game out, given the 'team-based strategy' element but if you do take a risk, you might find something memorable. (+) Pros • Fantastic visuals and character design • Top-tier voice acting • A compelling story where your choices do matter and does change your playstyle • The music is handled great by Darren Korb, making the soundtrack set the mood • Strong replayability for future playthroughs (-) Cons • Getting through dialogue on repeat playthroughs can be a bit slow, even with the 'fast-forward' optionStory & World
Before getting into the general gameplay, it's necessary to understand the world Supergiant Games has created because these worlds are always such an important piece to the puzzle that is known as Pyre. In Pyre, you live in a land known as the Commonwealth that has outlawed reading. You are discovered to have this ability and cast out to a purgatory-like land known as the Downside. This land is a literal prison; you cannot return to the Commonwealth because it is physically impossible to return. The only other people who populate the Downside are other criminals who've broken similar laws as well. You'll meet humans, dog people, bird people, and even demons. While you're condemned to live out the rest of your days in the Downside, you find a small band of strangers who rescue you and offer you a chance to return back home. You discover that there's a secret ritual unknown to most people in the Commonwealth that competes two groups in the Downside, each led by someone who can read, for a chance of redemption. The ritual places a team of three individuals against a similar team, in a sort of fantasy basketball. However, the team that wins the match has a chance to submit one person from their party to receive favor from the Gods. If the Gods favor that person, they will return this individual back to the Commonwealth, cleared of their crimes. However, for each character you encounter in your party, you will have to make the choice on who to 'redeem' and send back home. You'll grow to learn and love many of these characters, making the choices later in the game harder. As the game progresses, you may even learn why they were banished to the Downside, impacting your decision as the player on whether or not to save them in the ritual. However, there are a few problems. First off, you can't save more than one person at a time. When you choose to 'redeem' one of your party members, everyone else, including yourself, is stuck in the Downside. On top of this, you'll run into other people in other clans who have very good reasons to return home, making you question whether or not you should let the opposing side win certain matches. The biggest problem is as the game progresses, you'll soon find out that the 'chances' you'll have to save someone and return them home are limited; you can't play the game forever. At some point, you're going to need to make the decision on who has to remain in the Downside forever.General Gameplay
Pyre does something radical when it comes to gameplay; it makes you consider the story at the same time. While debating who you're going to send home, you have to remember that upcoming fights in the future will be more difficult if you send your star athlete back to the Commonwealth. Sure, you'd have made their dream come true and return them home, but from now on, you're now without that athlete's skills and talents. You are then forced to make critical decisions about whether or not you want to risk losing future engagements at the expense of saving characters you really care about. Pyre plays a little bit like some sport games. Your team can pick up a ball in the center of the map and 'dunk it' into the enemy's basket, or rather, pyre. They can also pass the ball to each other, cast abilities to temporarily banish enemy players, jump, dodge, and use a variety of unique abilities. For example, the bird-like creatures known as the Harps can fly over enemies. Demons, on the other hand are very slow behemoths on the battlefield, but can attack in huge AOE's. Progressing through the game makes you realize that at some point, you're going to want to save some characters you care about at the expense of making future engagement incredibly difficult. Worse, if you lose certain rituals, you can end up accidentally freeing an enemy athlete, having them steal your chance at redemption instead of someone from your own party. There is no game-over. If you lose, that's part of your story. You have to push forward and try harder to fight and win in upcoming rituals. The game doesn't stop and whenever you have a quiet moment, you're able to upgrade certain abilities for party members that they'll have gained through participation.Sound
The music is absolutely beautiful. The vocals are as deep and resonate than ever, using the amazing vocal talents from Darren Korb and Ashley Barrett. While there are quiet tracks without vocals, the few songs that incorporate their talents are simply amazing. Each song they sing tells the story of what is currently happening in the game and even hints at more story regarding each and every character. The sound design is incredibly great as well. Explosions, grunts, cheers, and even the fake language the characters speak all sound believable and match the tone to what is happening.Visuals & Performance
If you've played Banner Saga, the art style is visually consistent with that game, but Pyre does make more use of vibrant colors and crazy geometry. Each character is visually distinct and identifiable. The only real downside to the visuals is some of the animations for conversations use the same character portrait, making it feel that the developers ran out of time to incorporate additional rest-poses for the cast. It isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it could've helped at certain story junctures. In terms of performance, I only experienced one error that required me to restart the game. While shopping for some items from the curio shop to equip my team, the 'exit' button simply disappeared and wouldn't let me return back to the game. However, further attempts to replicate this error failed, making it very rare. And even then, the game constantly saves after every point. Conclusion
Some games offer a fun distraction; I don't mean this as a bad thing. Yet, those games offer nothing more beyond vague memories. However, there aren't many games that leave a lasting impression, making me notice a lump in my throat as the credits start. Pyre is one of those rare gems, where if you enjoy visual novels on top of RPG team-based gameplay where your decisions matter, it'll be hard for you to find a better game. You actually care about the characters you're travelling with, and when the time comes for you to make a decision, it changes gameplay in a way where you're forced to consider if you want to keep playing with the same characters you grown to love or release them to go back home to their loved ones. Never to return.PC Specs for this review
