  • unterschiedlichste Konfigurationsmöglichkeiten (Hunger deaktivieren, automatische Verdammnis ausschalten, anpassbare Monsterstärken, veränderbare Wahrscheinlichkeiten für Schätze u.a.m.)

A marginal thumbs up here.

The good:
Endlessly replayable casual turn-based roguelike.
Lots of depth in character development.
Old school in a good way.
It'd run on a potato.

The bad:
The antiquated interface, christ. So many keys to memorize.
Interactions with non-combat NPCs are awkward. The stores are ridiculously primitive, and remind me of something out of EA's Adventure Construction Set for the Commodore 64.
Perma-death and nothing is carried over to your next playthrough. Yes, I know this is a 'modern' innovation, but I can't help wishing for it.

Verdict: This is one of those old school roguelikes (like Nuclear Throne) that I will probably always have installed on my laptop. That said, I got it in a bundle, and I would definitely wait for a sale on this one.

A great new version of the classic roguelike adventure game. One of the best of its type.

So much charm, and so many mysteries and details to discover.

So many fun ways to die. Playing this game NOT on ironman mode is a horrible waste.

This game offers one of the answers to the question of what alternatives there are to save-scumming game design, and why permadeath is an essential feature. Every game becomes its own thing, with its own real stakes, as opposed to the endless savescum games out there where the only thing at stake is how much time you're going to waste on a foregone conclusion, pretending you've accomplished something while you cheat yourself out of a real experience of risk and reward.

My only real criticisms of ADOM are matters of personal preferenence - e.g. I don't really like D&D style game mechanics, high-hitpoint games, nor the ever-rising hierarchical power levels and dire challenges of the later stages of the game, though I do appreciate many of their charms.

Died in the tutorial because my starting sword broke and I ran out of arrows - 10/10.

Seriously though, I spent hours upon hours playing Rogue when I was a kid because my PC at the time did have a 3D graphics card. I would wander around the caves, delving ever deeper, chugging every potion, reading every scroll, zapping every wand... and taking the consequences of my actions like a champ. I still adore roguelikes/lites to this day, but I never thought I'd find a game like the one from my childhood again... until today.

Just playing through the tutorial was the ride of a lifetime. The game is incredibly expansive and I am already deeply, DEEPLY in love with it. I have finally been able to experience the gaming nostalgia of my childhood that I've heard others speak about when they reminisce about games on the NES or SNES (we were too poor for home consoles, but dad used to bring home PC parts from work that were gonna get scrapped and would cobble the bits together to make a working computer for us).

There are so many intricate systems and I KNOW I've only scratched the very surface of what is probably going to become my new obsession.

It's an amazing game, but I can't recommend it. The version provided by steam is full of bugs on linux, whereas the free version runs without any problems. Go ahead and support the developer(s) for making this amazing game, but stay away from this steam version if you're on linux.

Bugs I've found:
- Some menu text is completely broken, sometimes having the same color as the background, and sometimes showing up properly.
- The game is completely frozen unless you move your mouse or give some kind of input. The frames straight up do not advance at all unless you press buttons or move the mouse, sometimes the frames stop advancing in the middle of an attack or something so you have no idea what's going on.

This game is like trying to turn on a TV only you can't turn it on by pressing the power button like every other TV. But the TV comes with minimal crappy instructions so you spend an hour searching forums for a solution. Then you find out that first you need to flip a switch on the back then press the power button for 5 seconds then flip the switch back down before pressing the power button again only to have it not work.

If you put in the time to learn how to play, it actually can be pretty fun but the game play mechanics are just awful. It plays much different than anything you have played before and the tutorial is absolute garbage. Things that should be simple are stupidly difficult. Like buying stuff from a merchant. You don't just talk to the merchant then buy things from a list of items, no that would make too much sense. You walk in and the items are on the ground. You pick it up then you need to pay the merchant but there is no clear way of doing it. He just stands there blocks the door so you can't leave. You talk to him, no option to pay. you give him money, doesn't work. I had to search forums just to figure out how to buy stuff, and I STILL CAN'T!! The game could be good, but it's just too freaking confusing and gives you little to no guidance. There are too many other great games out there to waste time searching forums learning how to do the most basic of activities.

I'm frustrated haha

Punishingly difficult, at times to the point of punishing the player just for the sake of it. The dev should have taken a hint from Nethack on how to do this without making the player feel cheated.

One of the deepest, and most balanced, Rouge-like games there are.

Very recommend. Just expect to die 14 times before you get a good grasp on what can happen in the game. A enemy may sacrifice you to their god when you stand on an alter, or you may kick in a door and there's an explosion.

The performance of this game is so completely embarrassing that Thomas Biskup should really feel ashamed of himself for daring to ask actual money for it. A 15-Euro sprite-based 2D game should not have an average of sub-30 FPS with regular drops to below 15 FPS in menus on a computer that can run games like Assassin's Creed Odyssey at 60FPS. Biskup apparently didn't give a damn about optimizing this release for modern systems *at all* and I recommend against paying for it on the sheer basis of what a sloppily made product it is, even if it's otherwise a really good game.

I'd return it if I hadn't gotten it in a bundle, because that's really just ridiculous. I sure as hell won't be wasting any money on Ultimate ADOM, whatever *that* is about, just because of the risk that it'll be even half as much of an incompetent mess as this one.

It's ADOM. It's great. I've probably played somewhere over a thousand hours of ADOM since it came out in 1994, and 27 years later, I'm still playing it. Buying ADOM is like buying Apple stock in the 90s. Do it. Give your imagination a chance to flex its muscles.

Game is decent, but doesn't stand above it's peers and the interface is a bit clunky. If you want a game LIKE this but better, check out WAZHACK (which has a co-op feature), Dungeonmans (which has a legacy system), or Tales of Maj'eyal (which looks basic but is insanely rich character/build wise) or lastly Barony (which is multiplayer and really interesting.) Those are all roguelikes that are prettier sisters of ADOM. If you don't want to try them all, ADOM could easily be the one you skip.

The problem with the free ADOM is that the ASCII interface is impenetrable, particularly to infrequent and/or new players.

That problem is not solved with this version - it kicks you back to ASCII for many menus, actions need a smorgasbord of keyboard buttons, the tutorial prompts are tedious, etc. It is a 20 year old game, and the interface feels like it.

So why pay extra for this version over the free one? I don't know. If it was very cheap (~3$) then it might be justifiable. If you want to support the developer, then that's fine (though with Steam taking a ~30% cut there must be a more efficient way to do that, plus it was a big kickstarter). But if you want a new game? ToME and Dreadmore spring to mind, both easier to get into, and you can get both for less than ADOM.

tl;dr
Not a good game nor a good roguelike, just try something else.

Let's list the cons:

- The interface is terrible. I know that the game is originally an ascii game and that the graphics are just a layer put on top of that, and (maybe) that would be acceptable... if this was a sub 5€ purchase... for 15€ this is unacceptable (to me). If you want to ask for that kind of money all parts of the game should be made so they can live in the present era

- The tileset is decent but items are hard to see on the screen and you often have to watch the ascii minimap. It's not too bad but annoying and unnecessary, a glitter effect for dropped items would be enough to fix this (but I imagine it couldn't be done because of the limits of the game, I guess?)

- The randomization of the floors of the dungeons is boring and uninspired, they always look and feel the same and are not really exciting, I have yet to find interesting secret rooms or weird layouts, it's always the same long corridors with empty small rooms

- Having to solve the same quests in the same order at every replay, makes this feel more like replaying, over and over, again and again, a perma-death single player game with no saves, more than playing a roguelike (boring dungeon layouts makes this even worse)

- This game feels unfair and unbalanced. In the other traditional roguelikes I have played I always felt like I learned something after I died. In those games, thinking back on my death it was either: my fault for being too reckless or, I had the solution at hand but didn't think of approaching things that way. In this game I keep on dying and can't see what the solution would have been.

I can see people arguing about this point so let me reiterate:
roguelikes should not be about knowing that precise and unique way to approach things, I should not die because of that monster that one shots me if I don't use that specific tool to fight him, I should still be able to beat him, but at the cost of burning 2 (or so) healing potions to do so. That would make me die later in the game when I need healing potions and I don't have anymore. Then that would make me think back about how to optimize things and burn less resources to do the same things I did but in a better way.
Long story short, roguelikes should be about slow and long term optimization that comes with knowing the game better over time, not brutal trial and error for inescapable things that can be solved only in a precise way. This is the most important thing that makes this game a bad roguelike in my opinion.

- Linked to the previous point, I never like to look things up for a roguelike, because discovery is the best part of the genre, but in this game I just felt a lot of the time that things made no sense at all and had to look up the wiki a lot

Very fun take on Roguelike games. Very challenging and plenty of RNG. I love the depth of the character options as well.

Pros: Probably one of the deepest rougelike RPGs I've seen...tons of dungeons, tons of pathing options, varied items that keep it interesting, and a pretty impressive arrangement of enemies to fight. Lots of interesting quirks for min/maxing your character if you are into that.

Cons: Once you've got a handle on what you need to do and how you need to play, the depth of the game falls of drastically. There comes a point where you've seen every trap, trick, monster ability, etc that the game can throw at you and it becomes very rock / scissors / paperish. Enemies become bullet sponges that do more and more damage.

I got this from humble bundle and played over 40 hours which was a fun time. It is worth the price for sure if you are a fan of the genre and have never played it.

This game is currently in the Humble Bundle for July 2021. If you are interested in the game and it's before August 3rd, 2021, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

This is perhaps the first time I’m talking about a TRUE rogue-like, ADOM was released in 1994, and it is one of the original rogue-likes and one of the best of all time. I could probably spend an hour telling you why it’s good.

This is called a deluxe version with more graphical modes beyond just standard ASCII, adding mouse control, multiple difficulty options, and customizations and achievements. It has all the great gameplay that a roguelike should, a ton of classes, races, and possibilities, and so many different and unique interactions you’ll be able to experience.

It’s also frighteningly difficult. Rogue-likes are not intended for one-and-done playthroughs but rather take a lot of constant effort to learn everything you can just hope that the player can one day beat the game with one of their many characters.

Pick ADOM up if … well if you love true rogue-likes, or want a hard but interesting game. I’m a fan, but I will say that most people probably won’t enjoy this game, it’s a style of game that is not that popular and perhaps never was. It’s focusing on a far more strategic style of play which is why I talk about rogue-likes and rogue-lites often.

I’d probably not recommend ADOM to most people even though I am a huge fan of it. But if you like Rogue, Nethack, or Dwarf Fortress, it’s worth a try, and you can play the free version which includes almost the whole game including the better graphics at the ADOM website. It’s worth a try.

If you enjoyed this review or want to know what I think of other games in the bundle, check out the full review on or subscribe to my youtube channel: https://youtu.be/UqdMreTnUns

So, you got the key from humble monthly and wonder if you should play this game?

lemme help you out.

don't

unless you are a deep,*real deep* roguelike nerd, there is nothing here you will find more fun than the other one such a ToME, Tanglekeep,Brogue, sword of the star : the pit , crown trick and some more.

the curse item mechanic is unfun at best and the tactic aspect of the game is shallow. You will spam your normal attack/throw rock a lot, since beside spell there is just no special move. Which is very, boring.

it's probably not a bad game. But it's not a great game by today standard.

I've been playing this game now on and off for 20 years. The graphics have evolved but the underlying game mechanics have not. Nor do they need to. The dungeons layouts are random and each game never plays out the same. I have never been able to finish the main quest which is fine... the game is enjoyable without a final win. A refreshing change from games that can be won in only one way.

I don't write reviews often, but as I approach 500 hours of play time I feel I ought to do something to give back.

As one of the founding hits of the roguelike genre, ADOM is a game in which you should expect to die often. In other games that can be a deal-breaker for me, but much of the genius of ADOM is in starting a new character. ADOM is a game of near infinite variation: 12 truly distinct playable races, 21 classes that vary in play style according to the race and alignment of the character, dozens of skills and talents that also materially change the play through.

ADOM has been one of my go-to's for more than 20 (30?) years and I still find myself surprised by new and puzzling situations and combats in this sprawling fantasy world every time.

It really doesn't belong in the video game category for me anymore. It's become a favorite relaxing pass-time of it's own, like crosswords were for my grandparents, that I may drop into while chatting with a friend or listening to an audiobook or a certification course or just to enjoy letting my mind sink into all the detail and variation to unwind.

As I said, I'm not much of a reviewer. I guess this is more of a thank you note. To ADOM and Thomas Biskup et al, thanks for all the years of scintillating play and relaxation.

It's ADOM. If you know that name from your old school gaming days then you'll love this updated version. It's virtually the same game but with graphical improvements and some handy tweaks to character gen.

But if you haven't heard of it then don't worry. Just jump in, meet the fans, and find out why this game has a real cult following.

Just remember the golden rule: Kill them, eat them, take their stuff!

I've played a lot of Angband style games, and liked many of them. Tried ADOM a couple of times, and never got to like it. I find it just too arbitrary in the monsters, the items and the map. Obviously suits some people though.

I have played other rogue-likes (e.g., NetHack, UMoria, Angband) for hundreds of hours. After 20+ years, I am still not fed up with any of them. I remember trying out ADOM as well, but could not recall why I dropped it. It came back to me quickly when I started playing this shiny new version.

Good things: very nice tiles. UI and keybindings took some getting used to but worked quite well. Some nice quality of life features (especially the automatic exploration is swell.)

Bad things: ADOM takes the worst parts of old rogue-likes and combines them with fundamentally flawed, completely rogue-like-incompatible ideas. It is chock-full of poorly balanced and just plain stupid things (like disproportionate leveling of some monsters AKA the überjackal effect, artifacts that are indistinguishable from common items.) It has too many things that can ruin your game without you being able to do anything about it. It has too many things that are impossible to figure out on your own. It has too many grief mechanisms (like irreversible stat drain, casters forgetting spells, frequent item destruction, unstoppable disarming, ailments that are incurable for low level characters.) Its quests are not procedurally generated; they get really old really quick in a game one is supposed to play hundreds of times. It has too many extremely arduous things that MUST be done in every single game (if you live long enough.)

For a perma-death game with a very high RNG-fueled difficulty, ADOM is simply way too long, convoluted and tedious. It would require endless time and patience, and at least I lack both.

THE roguelike rpg gold standard. Every other roguelike rpg is a worse version of ADOM. Some still fantastic in their own rights, but there is no comparison. Limitless replayability, incredible depth and variety, relentlessly challenging without being unfair.

Oh, wow. I remember playing the free ASCII version of this game years ago, and finally picked up this version on Steam. It's just such a great game!

There are so many options to choose from when creating a character, and so many monsters and items to discover and learn how they interact. For instance, the fire bolt and frost bolt spells might seem pretty much identical, but fire bolts can burn items on the ground so you can't use them, while frost bolts can freeze water so you can cross over without swimming. Therefore the frost bolt spell costs more mana.

It can be a bit repetitive if you tend to die early on and you have to repeat the same quests over and over again, though. And the difficulty curve can be rather bizarre - you might plow through dozens of enemies with no trouble at all, then run into a boss that kills you in a few hits if you're not careful! It's probably best to be careful whenever you run into a new monster, especially one with a star by its health bar indicating it's unique!

Oh, I do need to mention the art in this game. The pixel art is very nice (though I do wish all of your character's equipment affected your avatar; hats in particular don't seem to, even though NPCs can be found wearing hats). Everything is easily recognizable and just looks good. And the music is very atmospheric; the levelup theme even changes depending on your alignment, it seems!

So yeah. Great game. A classic updated for the 21st century. Play it. ????

This game is a relic from an era in gaming that is long gone. An era in which terms like unlocks, meta progression, participation trophy, balance and hand-holding didn’t exist. Games were hard, oftentimes intentionally cryptic and held no punches. ADOM stands out as a hard and complex among those games. However, take into account that If you can put up with how ruthless and complex ADOM can be, you have here a game like no other. A game that is huge in every aspect: it has an incredible amount of places to visit, characters to create, creatures to kill, quests to do and ways to die. It can at times be frustrating and/or irritating but at the same time it’s incredibly rewarding. Each cleaned dungeon or completed quest feels great, hell sometimes even leveling up is gratifying. This was the first rogue-like I played back in 2005 and since then I’ve played it countless times. So, if you are up for a challenge, look no more: ADOM has what you need.

P.s: if you aren’t one already, this game will make you a dog person.

An old classic, tough-as-nails, rouglike with high amounts of RNG, a deep knowledge needed to win, but addictive to play and enjoy. These attributes can act as barriers, certainly, but are also part of the charm. If you like NetHack type games with deep lore, this will hit the sweet spot, though more modern games are likely a better use of your time.

Streamlines and scratches the Nethack itch just right and has a very nice tileset, if you had all the time in the world you could dump thousands of hours into it and still be entertained (however there's thankfully a wiki to abuse and spoil for those of us with less time/attention to give it with full time jobs and, well, lives).

What it could use: induce vomiting (don't ask), polymorphing, more interesting npcs/npc interactions, a few areas accessibility, less doom oh god there's so much dooming and it's so hard to get rid of.

^ when fine details like that are all you can think of to make a game of this scope better, it's a damn legend of a game. And, to be fair this is the sort of game where you need TONS of hours in for a legit thorough review.

One of the four pillars of traditional roguelikes, ADOM is a game with incredible depth. I have sunk at least 1000 hours into the original and never managed to beat it (but thats because I get careless). Pretty much *the* definitive old-school roguelike. The game began development in 1994, and it shows in the design - for good and for ill. If you enjoy a challenging game based around dungeon crawling, ADOM is a classic of the genre. Just keep in mind that you'll probably die a lot, and a playthrough is considerably longer than with newer roguelikes and rogue-lites.

The rebooted game (the Steam version) is much more accessible than the 90s incarnation of the game, but the game still demands a lot and doesn't explain the intricacies of its systems. But once you get past the tough stuff, it also offers many ways to use the acquired knowledge, and that can be immensely satisfying.

If you don't mind minimal graphics and the fact that you'll be spending a lot of time on wikis and in-game trial and error, and/or if you grew up on older PC cRPGs, ADOM will probably appeal to you.

WOW and WOW! One of my favourite games of all times is now in Steam. You can play in bit more modern graphical mode or the classic ASCII mode of course, what ever you prefer. I've played ADOM since the very beginning of it's ERA. Thomas Biskup and ADOM also inspired me to make my own Roguelike 20 years ago, it was called Legend of Saladir and it still can be found from the depths of the Internet, but the project was abandoned.

I definitely recommend you to support first a) Your Brain and b) Thomas Biskup and the ADOM team for their great work.

a) the brain because this game is not straightforward, you actually need to think occasionally :-)

Thank you Thomas my friend!

When I first found ADOM, it was 1998. I was still in middle school, and the era of the internet was just beginning.

It came by way of loving Nethack, but being unable to shake the feeling that as much as I loved the style of game, there could be one with a system that fit better. In came ADOM, back during a time when the postcard quest was on the title screen.

Similar in look and feel to Nethack, ADOM features what I consider one of the most classic, purest RPG experiences.

- Deep array of mechanics
- Beautifully written monster descriptions
- Wide variety of items and objects
- Combat that benefits from thinking and planning
- Wide selection of classes, and almost uniquely, classes are NOT meant to be balanced. I can't express how much I enjoyed that the difficulty of the game itself needed not hinge on an easy/medium/hard slider, but inherent in the talents and skills of the character you brought to the world.
- Clear main storyline goal that gives the game objective and purpose, without an overly large focus on aimless wandering (though there can be plenty of that if you choose to).

ADOM is a game that captured my imagination instantly, perhaps a side effect of the time. Graphics were miserable in the early days of PCs, and I readily found that my imagination served far better than the GPUs of the day.

These days, a graphical overlay was added with plenty of other more modern features, such as sound and mouse support.
Even with that available, I still prefer the ASCII graphics and a healthy dose of mental images.

This is the only game that I have played across more than two decades of my life, sometimes stopping for 5, 6 years at a time, but always coming back to, to enjoy again. The fundamentals of the game stand the test of time, a challenging, varied, sometimes unforgiving, old school traditional roguelike experience.

This the first review I've ever made in Steam but I've been playing Adom for years and years. This game is simply the greatest adventure game you can own, however it is rock solid and totally unforgiving. You're characters will die in hilariously unpredictable ways and you won't even nearly be ready for it, from accidentally kicking an altar to putting on a new suit of armour in Dwarf-town - before you've identified it - and finding out it's Mithril chain mail of hate and having the entire town suddenly HATE you.

Reading online and watching guides is essential to not make game ending mistakes and the list of commands can be off-putting for new players but perseverance in Adom brings great rewards. Own this game, it's the deepest game you will ever play.

ADOM is unique among roguelikes in that it has more of an RPG bent (it features an extensive skill system, for instance). While dungeon levels are (for the most part) completely random, a lot of emphasis is placed on the plot, which is a big draw of the game. The plot is immersive, intelligent and interesting. You enter the Drakalor Chain with the goal of stopping the spread of Chaos, completing quests as you see fit and generally fighting for glory. To aid the plot, there are many locations in the overworld and elsewhere that are constant. Thus, depending on the decisions you make, the same NPCs reappear and the same quests are available in most games (almost no quests are required to complete the game, but they are all interesting and worthwhile!).

ADOM has a lot of depth and complexity, and offers the best replay value of any game I've ever played. I have been playing it since 2009 and have won 24 times with 13 different classes and 8 different races – and I'm far from bored or done with it! From 2002-2012, there were no new releases, but a vibrant community still played the game incessantly during that time; that's replay value.

ADOM is all about flexibility and control of your character. Not only are there five different possible endings, but your trip to the end can take many different forms. You can kill all your enemies with thrown shields. You can true berserk everything to death. You can dual-wield daggers or go unarmed for the entire game. You can have a pet cave bear kill all your enemies. Want to sling gems? toss hats? kick or spit everything to death? It can all be arranged. While each class has its own specialties, the options are truly endless and offer you basically complete freedom.

Let's make no bones about it: ADOM is extremely challenging, and can be quite difficult even for a roguelike. Learning the ins and outs of the game takes a lot of time, but it's a very rewarding experience. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that there are almost no situations that can't be overcome by taking the time to think and evaluate your options.

I have been playing ADoM in one form or another since 1999. I love the original ASCII graphics immensely, but I am really happy to have a fully supported tileset for ADoM as my eyes sure aren't getting better with age!

Along with Nethack, Angband, and Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, ADoM is one of the great successors to Rogue. These are all hardcore Roguelikes, nothing 'lite' about them!
It can take a while to get into the game (even now I rarely win when I play) but it is a deep experience with many synergies and playstiles.

This is my favourite game ever. What else is there to say?

Ok, so I downloaded ADOM in all its ASCII glory back in the mid-nineties. Since then, I've died a lot. I've been killed by an exploding frog, I've been crushed by my own inventory, I've turned into a pile of chaos goo. I've had my real-life sleep disturbed by nightmares of bright green Hs and dark grey Ls. Eventually I managed a win, then another. I still die a lot.

There's no other game I could imagine playing for two decades. Adom is deep, challenging, frustrating and addictive. And it's still my favourite game ever.
