Since there is no option for no thumbs I gave it a thumbs up but it's a neutral for me. First of all I didn't like the artwork at all. Second of all, it was waaaaay too short. I understand that this was just the first episode, but it was still way too short. The game just plain look weird, and not in a good way to make it scary. Just weird like really crappy artwork. The story though could be something in the next episodes but I'm not sure whether I wanna commit to the rest of them yet, since this one didn't really rock my boat. I DID like the fact that you could chose skills to start that would influence the dialog. I finished my first run with Mysticisim I think (second option from the left), and talk to animals which I thought would make it quite interesting. This alone is quite an interesting idea. And it may be the ONLY reason that I may actually pay for the full game. Episode 3 is getting released today, so I may just buy it since it's cheap and the price should go up as they introduce new chapters. But honestly, so far I don't see anything special, and I certainly don't see how there are soooo many reviews praising this game. Especially one from Kotaku. I use Kotaku reviews alot to get games, and this one was HIGHLY praised there. I will try to finish it with the other skills too to see whether it affects the outcome at all, or just the dialog options. What I can say is that it has the potential to have a good story. But that will remain to be seen.

Once I finish with the rest of the skills, and see whether there are multiple endings to this episode or not, and have totally exhausted all options for this game, I will see whether it will warrant changing my review from what it is right now.

But I will say this. Episode one is FREE. So it certainly was worth playing a moderately intriguing game for FREE for only 2 hours of my time. And if that doesn't get you intrigued enough you can just stop playing it. And if it does then maybe you will even purchase the full Early Access game that will cover Episodes 1-3 for now.

Also as far as it being SCARY I would have to say I did NOT find it scary at all. Although I will give say, it IS creepy though if not scary.

And a happy belated New Year, and Holidays to all of you.

It is rare for me to find a visual novel that hits the right notes. If you are a VN fan, you will enjoy this; if you are unsure about an interactive fiction, give this one a try and I suspect you may like it.

This is by far the best free VN I can remember, better than many I have picked up in bundles too. The variety of starting trait options provides a significant difference to dialog. For at least one play-through you should choose “talk to animals” - the dialog is quite funny. The story is intriguing as well, of course.

Gorgeous art, incredible atmosphere, and really excellent, quirky writing that buffers its sometimes oppressive atmosphere with surprising moments of levity and humor. The first episode is free, so check it out and see if you like it! I'm looking forward to the game being completed so I can see where the developers are going with this all.

Definitely give this FREE demo of an amazing game a go!!

Scarlet Hollow is beautifully atmospheric, with a fantastic soundtrack and incredible hand-drawn art. It's a compelling and genuinely unnerving story. Its strength, however, lies in the complexity and nuance of a) its character interaction system and b) its branching choices-matter narrative structure. Together, these features make Scarlet Hollow really unique within the story-rich games scene, as well as adding way more replayability than you might expect from a VN. If the devs continue the trend set by Episode 1 for the other 6 episodes, this game will go down as a narrative masterpiece.

As someone who doesn't often play visual novels, dating sims, or horror games, I absolutely recommend Scarlet Hollow. So excited to see where the remaining episodes take us and how the rest of the mystery unravels.

I am kinda new to the Visual Novel game world but I adored this! I can't wait to finish the story! I love all things mysterious, spooky, beautifully drawn and darkly humorous ~ this game just hits the spot. As a choose your own adventure game, It's really cool how you take total control of every situation by choosing not only what you say & your reactions but your personality traits. Total replay-ability! Artist Abby Howard does a beautiful job at creating this world that reacts and changes with every reaction you give it. The characters are really fun. The story and the art combine to create a world that sucks you in immediately. So much fun!!!

Reallllly enjoyed Chapter 1! Brilliantly written and engaging. So well done I forgot I was reading a narrative, and found myself absorbed into the world, caring for the characters, and feeling like I had the choice to be myself and act in a way congruent with my real-life personality. Stunning stuff!

HOLY SH*T!
I definitely did not expect what I played.
The story starts like any adventure game with a 'family matter' baseline. How it evolves soon after is extremely interesting.

The hand-drawn graphics look amazing, and you don't even notice that it's mostly washed out colours and pencil greyscale. It is stunning.

The music sets the mood nicely and the occasional sounds are used to emphasize actions and events around.

The game also lets you choose your pronouns and there a few customisation options to personalise your character more. This can affect aspects of gameplay (conversations, perception of some events, etc.), which could technically add some replayability for those curious about other options.

The conversations flow nicely and apart from I think one instance that was of no consequence, the character says exactly what you select and what you want from the conversation tree, leaving no confusion about the intent.

I've only finished the first episode so far, but I'm just too curious not to get it. I NEED to know how the story continues, and you should find out too!

I've always loved Abby Howard's art so I absolutely had to try this game. I'm not big into horror but I enjoyed this like I enjoy Junji Ito sometimes - it's like a calm creeping kind of horror rather than an intense jumpscare horror. Definitely getting the full version, I must talk to more animals in it.

I just finished Episode 1 and wow - very intrigueing.
Excellent writing - like reading a thrilling mystery book(influencened by your answers) - interesting characters, great atmosphere with sounds fitting in perfectly.
I followed the events holding my breath, but eager to move on.
It doesn`t happen too often, that a story is catching me right away like this one did.
Of course the art style made me look deeper into it from the beginning.
Other comments nearly said it all already .
If you enjoy reading and appreciate atmosphere and art you will love it.

I got this thinking there would be more gameplay and at first I was kinda disappointed that its mostly just clicking through dialogue. But the game is actually really interesting. I've only played through it once (Book Smart and Mystical) so I don't know how much the other traits vary and affect the story but so far I found the characters really interesting. Also the premise and what happens in this episode really hooked me and I'm both scared but also super intrigued and I'm very curious on how the story continues.

★★★★☆

Scarlet Freakin' Hollow

Holy wow. WELL THAT just happened. No spoilers here but wow. I'm eager for the next chapter like,
RIGHT NOW, dude. Here's my complete opinion on the game in my review below.

- I did not back this game on kickstarter. I didnt even know about it until literally today.
- Your game starts out as you're heading to your cousin's house for your aunt's funeral.
- Your cousin however, lives in a freakin' mansion. I'm not even joking. They live in a 150 year old tutor style home that's just, falling apart

P.S.I streamed my entire play through of the first chapter!
You can see my character traits, my thoughts and my choices over here:

- Part 1
- Part 2
(I apologise for stumbling over words! NGL, I'm dyslexic.)

The Good Things:

-You choose your gender (masc, they, fem) and name / town. (These things all get referenced later in the game, so it's nice to see they as an option!) Your name has such a big role in the game actually! They say it so much!

- Music is lovely to listen to. Not super annoying or bouncy, just very quiet, nice strings and piano, lullaby-type music. Can get scary when it needs to be. It started to rise at one point and my heart began to race a little.

- Choices MATTER. Oh yeah they do. This is a choose your own adventure. You choose a choice and sometimes you cant go back - so choose the best one and go for it!
I may or may not have gotten someone killed.
- Beautiful art: HAHA wow, the CAT scene - it's AMAZING! I love animals, and naturally
the talk to animals trait was the one I chose
so seeing Frou Frou - the cat - as a fat chonk with a double neck flap, hOHOHO MY GOD.
So beautiful.

- IT HAS ACHIEVEMENTS!
- The cat does not die. That is an IMPORTANT something I want to say! You can breathe, friends.
- Beautiful animation at the end, it was impressive.
- Little frames change and make the story feel alive. I liked the writing.
- The developers are keen to get this game finished. Good developers, yay!
- THE DOG HAS MY NAME. THE DOG HAS MY NAME!! OH MY GOD.

The Not as Good Things:

- Frick. There's misspelled words occasionally. Being dyslexic, I can forgoive this, (ha, that just happened and I'm gonna leave it there for *hits.) But seriously, it does ruin the mood in the off chance you see it. I'm trying to remember specifically, but it was the word 'outside' and I think it was
when talking to Stella in her house, or seeing Wayne
, both pretty serious moments.

- Not every choice felt like something I'd say, realistically. But there's like, up to eight choices in some situations, so I guess it was only the ones with less than five or so choices where I felt that way! I did mention this in my stream a few times above, but only in the beginning, as the game progressed you got a lot more choice to really do WHATEVER you wanted.

- There were some parts where I would click a choice, and the character would go on to say it, and then say something off handed that I felt was rude, or just...not what I intended to say. Again, this could just be me reading the choice wrong I guess?

- BOILED PEANUTS? BOILED NUTES. Gross. What was with that guy?? Okay, I guess this isn't a bad part on the developers lmao.

I'm excited to see more about what the game has to offer! I am 100% suggesting people to play this, you will absolutely enjoy it and the work that has gone into it and every chapter.

Interesting start to a story that I hope will develop more as parts are released in the future. Fun to play through, a little unnerving, and easy to knock out in two hours (reading all the lines out loud -- probably less if you aren't). However there are a lot of typos I've noticed playing through, and it's a bit off-putting. It feels like something simple that could be fixed in a patch and I'm surprised that they haven't tended to it already.

I have not finished playing it yet, but so far, I would say, I am falling in love with this story and the way it was presented, and the various interaction(Action command eg. petting a cat, explore forbidden areas, and replying to in-game characters' questions) options(5 + 2 player's character's/attributes options for all scenes in the game).

It's fun to read and interact with this storybook and the characters in the book. Different possibilities and good music and sound effects. ('u') You want to read more about it.
I am surprised that this is free as the quality is so rounded(I can't find any negative thing to pick on). I've just noticed that, it's a game funded by fans of author and gamers. Do support their future development of this game through their personal website.

Positives:

1. Story is written in a style of teenage adventure book way. Not your usual 'predictable plot'. Like a proper adventure movie story.
2. Lots of nice appropriate BGMs suited for each area, and sound effects xD.(There is happy, sad, busy etc. atmosphere)
3. The way the characters speak are not boring, not dull at all. They speak very lively, like in a comedy drama. Each character has their own style of speaking.
4. Writing is straight to the point. No 'a full chunk of paragraph' on describing an environment/atmosphere.
5. On top of that, player gets to choose 2 describing words that would generate 2 extra options when coming to a decision making part. This gives a more player-orientated personal experience.
6. Decisions made through options(5-7 options for each questions) given to you can, either open up more side routes, or ends exploring in one scene, or dig deeper/generate more questions/information about the scene/person.

ATTENTION - THIS IS ONLY EPISODE 1 of an episodic game.

Yes, it's written in the description, which I unfortunatelely didn't read. (Not your fault, dear developers, but mine.) The reason I'm marking this so clearly is of course because I'm hungry for more after playing. And I'm usually not even playing visual novels (which might be the only genre I have filtered out on Steam).

You can choose some personal traits at the beginning, which open up different dialog choices, so it feels a little bit like an RPG. And you're choosing gender. I took male, but it absolutely feels like the protangonist should be female, so I recommend the latter. According to warnings in the game, you also get to change parts of the story, so it's not only about reading and clicking on.

The drawings are very good and I liked the usage of music very much. It gets you into the mood. So, go play it... or maybe, put the game on your wish list and play it when it's done to get the full monty. Or then again, buy a season pass right now so the developers can continue with their work. :)

Though it's only the first episode, it sets up a highly intriguing story and a great atmosphere. I'm not usually one for 'spooky' games, but this one has such a good balance of wholesomeness to scares, plus Gretchen!!! And the new update with the 'talk to animals' trait!!! Extremely excited for the next instalment.

“Once upon a time, the towering pines and sturdy Carolina hemlock seemed like a protective barrier, the walls of a living sanctuary. But now, draped with morning mist and heaped with snow, my beloved woods appear a menacing maze of secrets and shadows. The perfect hiding place for monsters.”- Jacqueline E Smith

Reaching the climax to the debut release of episode 1 the chances are high that the Reader will wonder how quick that 1 hour+ experience whizzed by and, just like when you stumble upon a mesmerising new box-set series, you immediately want to delve into the next episode to maintain the suspense of Black Tabby Games Scarlet Hollow co-written by NC's graphic novelist, Abby Howard & Tony Howard-Arias.

Right from the start of this Ren'Py Choices Matter tale you are given an identity by choosing your name, sex & home City that cleverly gives the Reader a feeling of association and, as an added plus, you get to choose 2 traits that will determine specific characteristic responses during choice dialogues. The purpose to this is in the game's relationship tree which branches out to align with particular characters throughout the ongoing episodes much like The Letter.

What is immediately obvious is how smoothly the story flows along like a vibrant stream that is bubbling over with character building of family tensions interspersed with humorous dialogues both dry & witty in their delivery. The slow development of a teen adventure mystery (that would make Scooby-Doo envious) enthused by the famous local YouTube cryptid enthusiast Stella, alongside her adorable Pug, as you explore the Deep South charms of the Appalachian close-knit community and the underlying threat of a supernatural horror that envelops around your character.
Follow up this entrancing story telling with the attractive hand-drawn artwork of cartoonist/graphic novelist Abby Howard enhanced by the animations of Lucia Retamales and visually your eyes are going to be indulging in the world of Scarlet Hollow as it comes alive; though be warned as some of the wildlife art can be gruesome and graphic.
The music creates an absorbing balance into this fictional world which is composed by Brandon Boone with sound effects carefully selected by Phil Michalski that aids in breathing life into the surrounding community & its creepy nature.

Episode 1 has its boundaries limiting you to areas that, in further episodes, will no doubt be open to exploring but that is to be expected so as to maintain the suspense. Touching more on the relationship tree system, there are also going to be further branching choices that will lead into dating that develops from early episode 1 choices though will also give rise to newer characters to add to the relationship system in future episodes. This is exciting to see as it shows the depth, variety and will help keep the story interest high knowing that further fresh characters will play out alongside the rising mystery of the plot.

Achievements are to be added from Episode 2 onward while a Kickstarter campaign will be ongoing that previously included a Steam Season Pass while a unconfirmed full release is aimed for 2023 dependent on funding and support though, already, there has been a runner-up award in the AT&T Unlocked Games recently!

Personally, I found the story to be a mix of mild horror mashed with humour that matches Abby Howard's prior successful Teen graphic novels so any fan who is familiar with her work will be right at home but for anyone who has not experienced any of Abby Howard's work before you will be pleasantly attracted to the warmth of the characters and the slow build to the mysterious plot. As a comparison, think along the lines of the style of writing seen in Perceptions of the dead to get a gist of the type of visual novel to expect.
This episode is free and it does have a charming appeal that will attract you while also keeping you interested with its stylish animated visual finale that adds more questions surrounding your character as well as the curious goings on within the mine.

Astoundingly good -- probably the best game written, designed, and illustrated by 2 or fewer people since SALLY FACE, which is one of the best one-person games I've ever played.. (It's also one of the very few games to remind me of FALLEN LONDON, the gothic comedy-horror choice-based source of obsession for me and many other fans of literary games.) And it's FREE.

Well, Episode 1 is free. But I would've cheerfully paid $15 for it.

In fact, although SCARLET HOLLOW is a straight up choice-based visual novel, in comparison to SALLY FACE's more gamified experience, SALLY FACE may still be one of the closest point of comparisons -- seemingly normal world with dark, ugly, mysteriousness bubbling underneath, artwork and writing that punch far above their weight class, and a thoroughly enjoyable, effortless entertainment that nonetheless indicates countless hours of work. And extremely well-written, complex supporting characters.

I have no idea if FALLEN LONDON was an influence on Abby Howard, but -- as with FALLEN LONDON -- careful attention has been paid to ensure that you can do self-destructive and disgusting things (at several points in Fallen London, you can temporarily drive yourself mad by looking where you shouldn't. In SCARLET HOLLOW, you can eat very, very old takeout from the fridge. And there are consequences.)

Did I mention the astounding pro-level artwork? And the branching storylines? There are 6 different ability options. Your character can pick 2 at the start of the game. Both ability choices unlock a new dialogue option in almost every scene. This may be Ms. Howard's first game, but damn if she hasn't inhaled the form and spit out something wonderful.

(Little touches: there's a mini-branch at the end where you can choose to stay at another character's house. It would've been easy enough, after writing this entire game, to just leave that out, especially since another character really wants you to go home. Nope. Totally new branch.)

I can't recommend this game strongly enough. And, like, I said, it's free. Download it now.

This game is fantastic-- the art is beautiful, the writing is interesting, engaging, and human, and the story immediately hooks you. Can't recommend it highly enough for fans of horror and/or visual novels.

It seems like a really interesting game with an intriguing story that I want more of. Unfortunately going by their kickstarter page they don't expect to have the full game released until 2023 and as such I can't recommend it. In 3 years time I could easily have forgotten about this and that's one of the issues with these kinds of episodic games. I understand that it's likely being worked on by a small team from a most likely relatively unknown developer but that doesn't change how I feel on this matter. A game that's not going to be finished until another year or 2 has passed at the very earliest, is not something I can recommend to others.

Creepy cryptids around a creepy house in a country town, and a very good pug named Gretchen all wrapped in a story and world that is unequivocally North Carolina Appalachia.

Found this game through Gab Smolder's stream, and I am so glad I did. It's a very interesting game that pushes the envelope of visual novels. I'm so excited for more content as the game develops. The only thing I would suggest is maybe some content warnings about
the animal stuff
because shew I was not expecting it and it was a LOT.

After putting about four hours into Episode 1, I would suggest Scarlet Hollow to anyone who likes:
Visual Novels and/or
Spooky games.

Not that I know much about horror writing or drawing but I think the game's beautifully illustrated and written. Right now there are a total of six traits(attributes) from which you have to pick two at the very beginning. I have tried multiple builds and they are not just illusion of different choices, they do change the outcome.
Anyway, I patiently wait for the final game. Good luck to the developers at Black Tabby Games.

This game doesn't pull punches in the horror department, an it's well-balanced with great humor and extremely lovable characters. (I wonder how many will survive by the end?) Abby's art is creepy as heck. I am so, so excited to play the next episode.

I have enjoyed this game (chapter 1) immensely and though my card is being denied by Kickstarter I will give y'all money when it stops being mean to me XD. All right so what do I think of the game? Clearly, I enjoy it, but I wish to be more specific. I am mostly satisfied with the amount of options for what to say to the NPCs and how one can explore them and oneself, the characters are enjoyable too which helps, and my cousin is a beautiful mess- more than me which is an achievement. The choices at the beginning are delightful as despite being an awkward person myself my selfisert character: Alistair is instead a very pretty and charming man with observation skills of a hawk, so the choices were perfect for me. Plus, the fact they open different dialogue choices makes me want to replay it more. If I have any issue, and this is a very minor one, is that when a character speak it clarifies (ooc) when they say it because you chose the hot trait, for example, which takes one out of the moment but as I mentioned, very minor issue. The art style is of course lovely and the addition of the whispers in the forest gave me chills and the ambient added to the atmosphere so, so much. I cannot wait for more!

I can’t remember a time I was as excited for a series as Scarlet Hollow. The first episode was released for free in hopes to get people interested and support the Kickstarter and it achieved it’s goal with me. I backed it and can’t wait for the finished product. Even as a stand alone episode if nothing else gets finished it was a fantastic game. The atmosphere is downright creepy and the music is as well. The art is really well done and unique. It feels almost like a black and white game but it isn’t. Just a really interesting colour palette. The story had me hooked and the characters were great. I loved the dialogue choices. You could run the full gamut of what kind of person you wanted to be. I also really liked the trait system where you pick two character traits and they will give you special dialogue options and story branches you otherwise wouldn’t see.

I played Scarlet Hollow: Episode 1 on Linux. It never crashed on me and I didn’t notice any spelling errors. I played version 1.0 of the game and it used version 7.3.5.606 of the Ren’Py engine. Alt-Tab didn’t work. You could manually save wherever you wanted and there were 54 save slots. The game used the OpenGL API.

Game Version Played: 1.0
Game Engine: Ren’Py (7.3.5.606)

Disk Space Used: 1092 MB
GPU Usage: 0-44 %
VRAM Usage: 587-990 MB
CPU Usage: 0-20 %
RAM Usage: 2.2-2.9 GB

I adored this game and everything about it. I can’t think of a single thing it could have done better. If you enjoy visual novels you need to give this a try. The episode is free but considering I just went and backed the series on Kickstarter for $14 CAD it is worth at least that to me. I finished the game in 82 minutes. That length felt right. It didn’t feel rushed or stretched out. It ended making you want more which hopefully we will get.

My Score: 10/10

My System:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 5700 XT Gaming X 8GB | Mesa 20.0.8 | Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB | Linux Mint 20 | Mate 1.24 | Kernel 5.4.0-48-generic

This was a fantastic experience. The hand-drawn art by Abby Howard lends so much character and live to the visual novel experience, and the music, sound design and characters combined with it create such a rich atmosphere. I finished the first chapter before I even knew it. Absolutely blown away. Foreboding, creepy, witty and somehow a little cozy, this is the best game for fall. I'm instantly smitten with Scarlet Hollow and all it's unique charm.

Also, a huge plus for acccessibility options, inclusivity (you can choose your pronouns at the start, which is awesome for a visual novel), and the awesome personality traits you can choose from at the start. It really feels like you get to customize this game exactly how you want. Also, I love that the personality of the player character really has no solid direction. There's a wide range of choices to make, from prickly and standoffish to warm and friendly, all given basically equal footing. The personality choices I made came up in very unexpected ways.

If you like visual novels, art-heavy games and horror, you should get this game!

However, my only con is that as far as I could see there were no content warnings before the game began. I may have just missed them by not paying attention, but please be prepared for body horror and gore.

Anyway, all in all a fantastic start to what is certainly going to be a unique and gripping horror story. Can't wait for more.

I have been looking for a game exactly like this for a long time, something interactive with a story where your choices could make a difference. This game has not only both of those but amazing artwork and characters as well. I can't wait to play the next episodes once they're released.

This game has already managed to astound me.
Having only played the first chapter, I'm not even afraid to say that yet, because I have absolutely no doubts the rest will awe me more.
Abby Howard is a master of that delightful blend of horror and humor, that makes itself immensely clear herein. I find myself utterly embroiled in the characters, the story, and every little nugget of mystery that pops up. Our cousin is a bitter lady, and I am torn between wanting to help her and stealing her Mac & Cheese. Ol' Man Doug on the edge of town loves his chickens, and I love him for it. The town tells a grand tale with everything we see, and I find myself on the edge of my seat with every trek through the woods, because I know better than to think they're empty.
The game blends visuals that puts more conventional games to shame with sound that does a fantastic job of setting the moods, and taking us quickly from one to another. I can hardly await everything to come, and my goodness, does it scare me.
In the best way, of course.
I have had to make choices, I have had to regret choices, and I am terrified of the choices to come, and what they will lead to. I'm also very excited to date some of these characters, secondary as it may be to the rest. I wait with eager anticipation to pay for this game, and play through what else it has in store, and I know I'll have to do it many times over, since there's no way I see everything in one run, which is, of course, half the delight.
The mystery chapter one offers, and the fact that it's only just beginning, has been the highlight of my week so far, and boy howdy, it can only get grander.
