“There are things that are so serious that you can only joke about them.” ~Werner Heisenberg
So, Serious Sam series, huh? It sure has a weird story behind it. It all started in 2001, when a small Croatian team called Croteam (that's a lot of imagination right here... not) released the first Sam game, which was supposed to show off their pride and joy – a game engine they wanted to license to the other developers to use in their projects. Long story short, it didn't work. Nobody cared about the engine, but at the same exact time, the game became a surprise hit. Even though in 2001 we've got quite a lot of great FPS titles (among the others, there were Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Clive Barker's Undying and Aliens Versus Predator 2), Sam sure captured a lot of attention. All because of its simplicity. It was just that – a very simple game, in which you were supposed to run forward and destroy hordes of enemies, which spawned in crowds right in front of you. It was a very basic, yet extremely addicting fun. And mixed with the bright colors, nice visuals and multiplayer, it helped Sam to instantly spawn a franchise. Even the fact that story and design-wise, the game was pretty much a rip-off of popular titles like Duke Nukem and PowerSlave wasn't really a problem. Nobody cared about Sam himself. People just loved shooting hordes of enemies and having fun in multiplayer (even though it was hard to compete with Tribes 2 back then, Sam's multiplayer was really a thing). The problem was – Croteam didn't really know what to do with the series. They were just some guys, making an “excellent game for radical dudes”. For fun. Then suddenly boom! They're in the big league. And it was like having Bill and Ted in White House. They just didn't know what to do there. Console-oriented spin-offs were a logical thing to do, but it was impossible to milk the first game (and its second chapter called Second Encounter, which was the same exact thing, just with some more ways to show off Serious Engine and its physics) forever. Croteam needed a sequel. And Serious Sam 2 sure showed exactly what was wrong with them. Even though the game itself was kinda playable, the only thing they were able to do there was a lame HALO rip-off with ugly pre-rendered cutscenes and unbearable humor that felt a lot like what we had in Postal III. Fans still enjoyed the game, but it was clear that Croteam needed to do something with their series. To re-think their decisions and make the next big thing for the series to depend on. Well, here it is. Here's our next big thing. Ladies and gentlemen, please, welcome Serious Sam 3: BFE! And the first thing you'll probably want to know 'bout it is... What the f*ck “BFE” stands for? No, it's not “Battle For Earth”. And no, it's not even “Boobs Forever and Ever”. It means “Before the First Encounter”. Which means that it's a prequel. Which... is stupid. I mean, sure, Croteam never had proper writers, but honestly, why being so afraid to at least try telling some sort of a story? Why cowardly hiding behind the original motif (which was aliens in Egypt, like in PowerSlave)? Like I said, it was a stupid decision. Yet again, the story here barely exists and you can just turn off the sound without missing much. Unfortunately to us all, it wasn't the only stupid decision Croteam made. Let me ask you a question – what's the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about Serious Sam? I can't speak for everybody, but my guess is: bright colors, hordes of enemies, satisfying / interesting weapons and dull / straightforward levels. Now, look at Serious Sam 3. I guess I won't surprise anyone if I'll say this – Da f*ck did they do with color palette?!. I mean, come on. You can't just take Super Mario Bros. and put 'em into Dark Souls environment. Doesn't work like that. And yet, that's exactly what Croteam did here. They've turned a bright “just for fun” shooter into the real deal. It's not like I've enjoyed those pathetic jokes in Serious Sam 2, but turning Sam into something (way) more... serious? What a joke. What an irony... Sure, the game still tries to be funny now and then, but honestly, it only makes things worse. Just because this game feels like a lame Duke 3D rip-off like never before. What were they thinking?! Seriously, they looked at 2011 lineup (which included games like Battlefield 3, Crysis 2, Bulletstorm, Brink, F.3.A.R. and the others) and were like “This! Let's compete with all this!”. Remember that Internet meme with monkey, which had a stick in its hands and was about to hit lion with it? That's exactly what the plan here was. I mean... what can go wrong, right? Turning Sam into a generic big league title... good grief... But OK, the atmosphere was f*cked up. But maybe gameplay is actually good? Well... it's mediocre. It doesn't feel especially bad, but while trying to add proper level design, puzzle elements, keys and the other things from proper FPS games, Sam kinda... lost its original appeal. It's like it lost the exact thing that made it special. And yes, in this exact case, being dumb and straightforward was a good thing. While aiming for proper FPS experience, Croteam just... turned their game into a generic second-grade FPS. Especially since they didn't do a very good job. For example, every time there'll be a closed door, the key to it will be in a trailer. The same exact trailer that was copy / pasted to all the levels with closed doors. In other words, the game feels repetitive and comes with a cheap aftertaste. Same thing with the weapons. Those are fine, but... not nearly as satisfying as what we had before. Even those few guns from previous games that also appear here, don't feel nearly as good as before. The guns in Serious Sam 3 do the job, but like everything else in this game, they feel generic. There's nothing special about them. Nothing overly satisfying. Even the engine didn't do well this time. Since at this point, Epic totally dominates the market with their Unreal Engine, while for small and poor developers there's always Unity, Croteam just gave up. Seriously, did you even hear about Serious Engine 3? No? Well, there are two reasons for that. First – Serious Engine is not available for licensing anymore. Nobody cared about it even in its best times, while at this point, it was unable to provide anything special or interesting. And that's where our second reason comes in – Serious Engine 3 was only used in HD re-releases of the first and second “encounters”. Serious Sam 3 comes with Serious Engine 3.5, an updated version of the engine and still, there's nothing interesting to say about it. And as the result, it was only used in this game. So... yeah. I can't say that Serious Sam 3 is completely unplayable or something like that. It's not one of those ultra-crappy FPS games like Chernobyl: Terrorist Attack and it's actually better than Duke Nukem Forever, which came out the same year (again, the irony). And yet, it's one of those games that fail to give you a reason to waste your time on 'em. If you have nothing else to play and it's currently on sale with, like, 90% off? You won't feel that bad playing it. But if you'll compare it with pretty much any other big name from 2011? Serious Sam 3 doesn't stand a chance. Like I said, Croteam didn't really know what to do with their initial success. And instead of pushing into “bullet hell” direction, they've decided to play in a big league. And failed. Dixi.

Review
I only have a few words to say: that is a SERIOUS game! Seriously, I love the soundtrack, sense of humor and whole atmosphere from the series. Some say that the third episode isn't as good as the two first ones. I'd say try it and have your fun just as I did.For achievements hunters
Hours to completion estimated between 40 and 60 hours average. Less if you already know how to play the series on Serious difficulty. I recommend watching the guides on Steam for secrets. Some multiplayer achievement can be done solo if you have a controller.

Sorry fellas who already rated this review, but I thought this game was so good it needs a proper review.SERIOUS SAM 3: BFE
is basically COD on drugs but its not COD. While it does shake up the SS formula with god forbid sprinting, ADS and reloading on some weapons, while also having the generic and not colourful colour palette as literally every shooter from the late 2000s-early 2010s had. However the game in itself is good.Plot
Imagine playing Serious Sam for the plot lmao. Play it or google it.Gameplay
As mentioned before, the game has ADS ,reloading and sprinting. This all added to the gameplay formula of Serious Sam: frickton of enemies swarm you in a large arena, shoot them. Or just spam E on any enemy that you can melee. Some allow you to grab their beating heart or head after meleeing them. Some weapons have been changed, some weapons are secret only, and some weapons have been outright replaced. The revolver is now a pistol, and the knife is a sledgehammer. You also have a gauntlet in the later levels that allows you to gib any enemy if it aint too big( as otherwise it wont kill it before needing to cooldown). You also need to find keys to find some doors which are always in the same type of building, you'll know em when you see em.Graphics
Decent I guess. Though they shouldnt be making my FPS drop, playing it through SS Fusion(which you receive if you buy this) apparently solves that issue.Multiplayer
More dead than my grandad moving ooooooooooooooon.Final Verdict
8/10, made we want to moon my house multiple times.
