Einst vor langer Zeit, am Anfang des 22. Jahrhunderts, war die Erde mächtigen Angriffen von Notorious Mentals Armee von Untergebenen ausgesetzt, und die Menschheit drohte von der Erdoberfläche zu verschwinden. Sam `Serious` Stone, der tapferste Held der Welt, wurde in der Zeit zurückgeschickt, um die Vergangenheit zu ändern und die Menschheit vor der kompletten Zerstörung zu bewahren.

Durch ein uraltes Artefakt, das "Zeitschloss", dass auf der Erde von einer lang vergessenen Rasse zurückgelassen wurde, reiste Sam kurzerhand direkt durch die Zeit ins alte Ägypten zurück und fand dort Überreste der Zivilisation der Sirianer inklusive deren Raumschiff, dass irgendwo im Solarsystem verborgen war.
Notorious Mental, das unsterbliche Böse, versammelte die fiesesten Kreaturen des ganzen Universums, um Sam zu stoppen. Tausende Biester stellten sich Sam in den Weg, inklusive dem großen Ugh-Zan III, einem brutaler Kriegslord, und seinerseits einer der schrecklichsten Untergebenen von Notorious Mental.
Aber sich in Sams Weg zu stellen ist keine gute Idee. Nach einigen Gefechten besiegte Sam letztendlich Mentals Armee. Nun stand er vor der großen Pyramide und traf auf den mächtigen Ugh-Zan III, und er gewann auch diesen ruhmreichen Kampf. Von der Pyramide aus teleportierte sich Sam auf das Raumschiff der Sirianer.
Und nun reist Serious Sam zum Sirius. Oder vielleicht doch nicht?

Rückkehr des Schrotflintenmannes

„Serious Sam: The First Encounter“ und „Serious Sam: The Second Encounter“ sind baugleich und im Grunde ein langes, zusammenhängendes Spiel. Daher variiert mein Review zu beiden Teilen nur sehr bedingt.

Gameplay
Es gibt zwei Dinge, die ich einem Gegner im Serious Sam Franchise sagen würde. Erstens: “Leg dich nicht mit Sam an” und zweitens: “Man, du hast aber verdammt viele Freunde!”. Denn wie in kaum einem anderen Spiel fallen uns in diesem Spiel einfach eine riesige Zahl an Feinden an, die mit ihren Eigenarten auch immer eine andere Bedrohung darstellen und andere Waffen benötigen. Aber Eines haben sie alle gemeinsam: Sie mögen keine Schrotkugeln im Gesicht! Abgesehen von der massigen Ballerei bietet das Spiel für sein Prinzip viel Abwechslung. Dies liegt an den vielen auffindbaren Geheimnissen, aber insbesondere an den coolen Physikspielereien, bei denen das Kämpfen erst so richtig spaßig wird. Die Kampagne kann man zudem mit bis zu 32 Spielern durchspielen, was einfach nur in einem riesigen Schlachtfest endet. Neben der Kampagne macht aber auch der Versus-Modus viel Spaß und war lange Zeit der Hit auf LAN-Parties. “The Second Encounter” bietet noch verrücktere Spielchen mit der Physik und ist insgesamt nochmal eine Spur abwechslungsreicher als sein Vorgänger.

Story
Die tiefgründige Handlung basiert auf den gleichnamigen Roman von…Ne, eigentlich geht es hier nur darum, unseren Blutdurst mal so richtig zu befriedigen. Unsere Hauptfigur Sam legt dabei zwar immer wieder mal guten Humor an den Tag, aber abgesehen davon, dass wir den Erzschurken Mental vernichten wollen und die Erde in großer Gefahr ist, gibt es nicht viel Geschichte.

Grafik/Sound
Klar, Serious Sam ist alt. Wer auf die Physikspiele verzichten kann, könnte sich ja stattdessen zumindest die aufgehübschte HD Version geben, aber ich würde behaupten, dass diese Spielereien mit der Engine die bessere Grafik nicht wert ist. Aus nicht erklärbaren Gründen, gibt es die HD Version vom zweiten Encounter nur in Serious Sam: Fusion, den ersten Teil gibt es aber als Standalone… Witzig ist in der Spielreihe die Möglichkeit, dass man statt Blut und Körperteilen einfach Blumen und Obst im Raum verteilt. Auch für Vegetarier wie mich ist also etwas dabei… Einprägsam sind auf jeden Fall die Geräusche der Feinde und auch der Soundtrack rockt nach all der Zeit immer noch.

Fazit
„Serious Sam: The Second Encounter“ ist zwar schon fast antik, macht aber auch nach all den Jahren noch jede Menge Spaß. Von der HD Variante würde ich tatsächlich eher abraten und am ehesten zu Serious Sam: Revolution raten, welche die beiden ersten Encounter in einer angepassten Version vereint. Zumindest würde ich behaupten, dass „The Second Encounter“ an Spielspaß nochmal eine Schippe drauflegt, aber in „Revolution“ hat man eh ja beide Spiele vereint. Serious Sam macht ansonsten gerade im Koop einfach richtig viel Spaß und ich kann es auch nach all den Jahren noch empfehlen.

Ein echter Klassiker, der aber im HD Remake viel besser aussieht. Spielerisch und handlungsgemäß identisch, aber wenn es um eine echte Empfehlung geht würde ich natürlich die HD Version bevorzugen. Das Spiel, Serious Sam Classic The second Encounter, ist wie gewohnt schnell und laut mit coolen Sprüchen und seltsamen Gegnern. Das viele Geschrei und der Lärm ist manchen Spielern aber einfach nur lästig. Die Gegner verhalten sich nicht sehr intelligent und rennen nach dem Erscheinen einfach gerade auf Sam zu und sind immer sehr laut dabei. Für Spieler die gerne Gegner mit mehr Verstand und Taktik hätten nicht sehr empfehlenswert.

This is a direct continuation of Serious Sam: The First Encounter. To be honest, it feels more like a big add-on rather than a proper sequel, but don't let this put you off, it's still awesome. Game has more of everything: more guns; more enemy variety; more varied and bigger levels; more bosses; and more carnage. If you like First Encounter you gonna love this one because it expands and improves almost every part of the game. Must play for every FPS fan.

- Awesome arsenal;
- Brutal gameplay;
- Great soundtrack;
- Good graphical fidelity;

This game never claims to be more than a straight-forward shooter, and it manages that admirably. It's just good, mindless fun. I still remember going to my friends house just to play this game.

The best game ever made.

The pinnacle of human video-game engineering. Might sound sarcastic, but im not, i play this game every year since the release in 2002, i can never get tired of it. Every single other entry in the franchise pale in comparison. I compare every other game to this and Second Encounter still stand towering over them.
It has the guns, the wits, the level design, the diversity, it has it all.

I dont put a score on this game, scores were made for inferior games.

It's time to get Serious... Again!

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is a sequel-expansion pack to the orginial game, using the same engine but having more enemies, more weapons, and more places to frag all of Mental's army into glorious, glorious gibs. If you enjoyed the original game you'll have a great time with this sequel as they tried and fixed some of the issues from the original game. Quickly in terms of story it just takes place right after where the first game ended and I assume smooths into the sequel.

Gameplay is well exactly the same: arenas, hallways, weapons, buttload of enemies, random collect-a-ton elements, and more Sam. All the works but with some new features. New weapons such as the Sniper Rifle for faraway targets, Flamethrower for crowd control, and the Serious Bombs for even more crowd control. Brand new power ups like Serious Damage, Serious Speed (Which is so much fun) and Invincibility. Mental's Army also gets a few new member to flesh out the enemy roster a bit more and give some more spice to the things you need to shoot.

One of the biggest newest features with TSE is the brand new environments. Rather than just having the same Egyptian themes, now we have South American, Babylonian, and Medieval. The neat thing about these is that they last for just the right amount of time before hoping into the next time. In the terms of length it seems to be the exact same as First Encounter with 12 levels (No secret ones) and each with decent length.

Overall Serious Sam: The Second Encounter improves on what the original made as a foundation and built upon that adding more life of quality improvements, new stuff, and more Serious Sam goodness. While again I CANNOT recommend marathoning these games in one go, playing in short bursts generally gives you the best experience. Now time to go high definition....

new weapons and new enemies, and locations that arent all the same color pallette?
whats there not to love?
well... for me, there a lot of frustrating design choices [spoiler]STOP FUCKING PUTTING REPTILOIDS EVERYWHERE GOD DAMMIT[/spoiler] that really hold the game back from greatness. overall i prefer the first game.
8.5/10 would still play again, especially for that awesome final level

This game has everything you would want from a shooter - adrenaline-filled gameplay, various different areas and challenges, beautiful environments, witty one-liners, a large enemy rosster. You have to always be focused and learn to dance with the enemies if you want to succeed. It keeps the player engaged from start to finish. The only downsides to me are the bosses, which are too easy, and the overuse of gimmicky rooms. Apart from that, this is a cult classic and a must play.

Serious Sam: The Second Encounter is a direct sequel to the First Encounter. More guns, more enemies, and overall an even better game than it's predecessor. Pick up your arsenal, put on you red Converse All-Stars, and go to town on the aliens.

NOTE: Because of character limitations, I will mostly only talk about the features added to the Second Encounter, like the new enemies and weapons, since they are both pretty much the same game. If you want a more in-depth analysis of the older enemies and weapons, check my First Encounter review here.

Synopsis

It's a blast from the past, and even better than the first game. If you enjoyed the First Encounter, you will definitely like this one.

Gameplay

+ Positive

+ The gameplay is still the same as the first game. Most weapons feel good to shoot, plenty of aliens to kill, and hordes of enemies coming at you from every direction, it's a blast. None of them are really sponges (there are a few of them that can take a beating, but they are stronger enemies).

+ Movement is good, Sam runs at a good enough speed to keep the pace of the game. Jumping and crouching are a bit more useful this time around during exploration.

+ Joining the already good arsenal, we have 4 more entries. The Chainsaw, another melee weapon, good against some enemies, especially Gnaars and Marsh Hoppers. The Flamethrower, good for trash mobs and Kleers, doesn't work on Lava Golems. The Sniper Rifle, a good quality of life addition. Good against most enemies, but highly useful against Harpies, Reptiloids and Arachnoids, and far away targets. Last but not least, the Serious Bomb. These girls here are rather uncommon, but they will rock your world. Kills everything except for bosses in a big radius around you. You can only carry 3 at once.

+ Joining the cast of aliens, the Second Encounter adds some more for you too shoot. The Pumpkin Boy, rushes at you with a chainsaw. Zorg Commanders and Mercenaries, fodder for most weapons. The Zumb'ul, a humanoid/pig hybrid that shoots rockets at you. The Reptiloid Demon, a red looking dragon that shoots fast fireballs at you. To finish the cast we have the Highlander's Bride, a huge mountain sized Reptiloid that only shows up once (twice if you are playing Co-op on Hard or higher) in the entire game, and it's on a secret. There are also 3 completely new bosses.

+ Both Multiplayer Deathmatch and Co-op exist, and for a game from 2001, there are still a bunch of servers up for your enjoyment. It even supports Split-Screen.

/ The gameplay is pretty much always the same, from start to finish. If you like it, it can be enjoyable, but if you don't, it doesn't get better, sorry to tell you.

Difficulty

Read my First Encounter review for an in-depth explanation of all the difficulties (link above). For a summary, Tourist is grandma-mode. Easy, Normal and Hard are both standard difficulties. Serious is for serious people only, you take a lot of damage, enemy spawns are turned up and enemies are faster. If you finish Serious, you unlock Mental. It works just like Hard except the enemies become invisible, Serious is still harder though.

Graphics

For the time, they were pretty good. This game is a lot more colorful than the First Encounter. If you are not bothered by older graphics, the game still holds up quite nicely.

Length and Replay Value

Level amount took a hit since the last game. Second Encounter offers 12 levels versus the 15 in the First Encounter, but to make up for it, levels are larger overall. No secret levels this time around. The game is around 6-7 hours on a blind playthrough.
Multiplayer exists and is still playable. If you are a secret hunter, or like to play games on higher difficulties, there is replay value for sure.

Navigation and Level Design

In this game you will travel through a lot of places. From Central America to Babylon, Medieval villages and even Santa's land. Levels are still quite linear, but to make up for it, they are larger in size, and usually offer more exploration. The game still holds your hand a little bit with cutscenes. There are secrets everywhere.

Sound and Music

Sound overall is okay. The sound effects are great, both for the weapons and the enemies. Sam is full of one-liners. Music is good too, the last level song is pretty memorable, and my favorite song in the OST.

Story

The game follows right where the First Encounter ended. You are traveling on a spaceship, and a space accident happens. The ship crashes on Earth again in Central America and there you go.

Problems

For an older game, it's surprising to see that it can actually hold itself together. It supports high resolutions, high framerates. Never had it crash on me. When it comes to problems, I don't really have anything to talk about.

Closing Thoughts

This game is being sold for 6€. If you can get past the older graphics, and don't mind the repetitive gameplay, it's an enjoyable experience. On a sale, is dirt cheap, and worth picking up for some nostalgia. Overall a better game than the First Encounter, and if you enjoyed that one, make sure to give this a try.

Serious Sam Classic: The Second Encounter

A Worthy Expansion That Improves In Some Solid Ways

I was pretty surprised to discover that this expansion improved on some factors of the original Serious Sam game rather than running its core gameplay loop into the ground. While this title still has segments that struggle with repetition and a lack of interesting environments, there are more interesting levels and gameplay sequences to fight through in between these chaotic level-sprawling brawls.

Serious Sam Classic: The First Encounter struggled with one very big thing - repetition when it came to large-scale, open-area fights. This game does little to improve upon that formula. However, the parts between these fight are what has improved in this expansion, alongside a few interesting enemy additions and weapon choices.

Levels are now built around special traps or gimmicks, including but not limited to - wall-running, anti-gravity, death traps, giant/miniature enemies, and loads of entertaining secrets to uncover, among many others. These all result in much better levels than the original game, at least in terms of design, which was a nice surprise since I was expecting more of the same. However, the actual environments are improves as well. Instead of one static desert environment, there are snowy villages, creepy gothic-inspired castles, ancient ruins, grassy mountaintops, and lava-filled caverns. With more things to actually look at, it becomes less of a slog to play through the game!

The new enemies and weapons are neat as well! The chainsaw-wielding pumpkin-headed lumberjacks are pretty scary to fight against, and the skinless red aliens with blasters are a nice addition to add in some more static enemies. Additionally, the new sniper rifle and flamethrower give some more options for dealing with both large and small foes, respectively.

The humor in this game is much goofier as well. There were more instances where I stared at the screen in disbelief over a really strange joke or a weird secret, and that made me want to explore each level even more!

My biggest complaint is similar to the first game, and it comes down to the giant open-level fight that occur pretty often in this game. Sometimes they are fine, and have a nice balance of interesting environments and a ridiculous amount of enemies to kill. However, it is more often than not that a fight will stretch out way too long and leave me feeling frustrated at the length and repetition of each one. This was especially true of the the final level, which essentially consisted of only these fights taking place over more than an hour of gameplay.

Despite a major flaw still not being addressed, I saw this title being a nice improvement over the original. It didn't take any real leaps in terms of innovation or spectacular changes to gameplay, but it added enough into the experience to keep things feeling fresh. I can Recommend this title pretty easily!

It's classic Sam as you remember it from your childhood. I would honestly pick the upgraded HD versions as they are more or less the same but with way better graphics, but this is still a stellar experience. Do you like facing massive hordes of enemies while being armed with cannons, rocket launchers, and miniguns? You will love this.
