Absolute junk. I have tried 10 times at least to learn how all of this works but to no avail. Controls are clunky and unresponsive making everything you do in this game hard work. Tutorial is bugged The graphics scale is all over the place so that if you select a module the ship is covered by the module control so you can't place or see your ships modules.

It's as if through out development they kept changing stuff but only doing a half-job on it leaving a mess behind.
It doesn't feel like a game, more like a futile attempt at getting something to work as it should. Also no immersion or atmosphere.
If your looking for a FTL clone look at Trigon. That does things much better than this POS.

Did you like FTL? Did you want an insane challenge? Then this is the game for you.

Shortest Trip To Earth is the spiritual successor to FTL: Faster Than Light, if an FTL sequel was made by the people that created Dark Souls. The difficulty is intense, the gameplay is engaging and the universe is simultaneously hilarious and horrifying. Do yourself a favour and buy this one. Just make sure to schedule time to learn it's systems and how to micro-manage your crew.

Once I figured out a winning strategy (using lots of ECMs), this is now one of my favorite games. I wish there was a sandbox feature where I could have tested different builds, but I guess that's what the rogue-like element is all about. Trying out different ships, strategies, and randomized elements is what keeps this game interesting. Please make more games like this!

This game is a spiritual successor to the fabulous FTL. This game is both grittier and more granular. I would recommend Shortest Trip to Earth to anyone who has completely exhausted new experiences in FTL but who still wants more of a similar style of adventure. If you have not played FTL, play that game, instead, as it is a better overall experience.
Pros: More rogue-like ship exploration and choose-your-own adventures.
Cons: A LOT more micro-management is allowed, but also required for decent levels of play. For example, it is expected that you will completely swap out nearly all the modules on your ship (and reassign workers) both before and after each combat. Be prepared for a single run through this to take many, many hours, without actually providing any more experiences than a game of FTL.

Makes me want to play FTL some more instead.

Was hoping this was a more open ended FTL but instead is a very complex slow combat version of FTL.

Shortest trip to earth is FTL2 with more options. The game can be unfair and tough sometimes but it is expected as it's a rouge-lite. I enjoyed the game mechanics and options initially but because of a lot of micro management, repeated random events and station/planet encounters it became tedious and boring. Also the plot and writing is paper thin and would have greatly helped the game if they had invested in a rich narrative driven experience. It is something you can explore and have fun with for short time especially if you loved FTL but the novelty can run out quite quickly. It is a recommended buy during deep discount periods..

TL:DR;
imbalanced in terms of resources and difficulty (as in NOT fun); Short; Every campaign is the same. Exact same sectors with exact same events, some randomly placed extra stuff each time. Like WTF, where is this rogue-like? You beat the game twice and... nothing to do?

Review 6/10 and only because I like space exploration games.

Graphics: 7/10
- is okay, will do
- could use a little more variety but there isn't enough events and items variety to add it to

Sounds: 5/10
- okay, some music, some generic sounds, but
- sound settings keep changing each time you start the game for reasons unknown, and
- eventually it gets very repetitive.

Gameplay: 4,5/10
+ space exploration
+ kind of a relaxed pace flying, but not really
+ some decent selection of ships, skills, items, but not really
+ overall concept was great, but not really
+ very few bugs

Unfortunately:
- totally imbalanced in terms of getting fuel and food, like space somehow has finite resources
- non-random where it matters, very random where you don't want it to be, namely:
- campaign is always the same ten sectors, same events there, same goals - goes against roguelike spirit, but wait
- there is more, as battles are very hard in terms of resources needed for repairs, and
- crew AI is dumb AF, as you need to manually assign them a role and if you send them to healing, this gets reset
- meaning that your crew will stand idle when ship crashes and burns
- combat with very weird mechanics, costly in terms of resources used by stronger weapons, costly in terms of healing and repair
- assaulting enemy ship is guarantee loss of crew, unless you are very lucky and stop firing at that ship (ship goes boom your crew aboard goes dead)
- game tries hard on some not so witty humour, may seem funny for the first time, but not for n-th run.

Also crazy achievements. Die 77 times, really?

Conclusion:
This game has amazing concept, but lacks pretty much everything in terms of rogue-like space exploration.
It is the same ten sectors again and again all over, the same enemies, the same stations etc.
It is way too short, but that is masked by brutal difficulty (or, actually, more like deliberate lack of balance).
I wish it got some randomized campaign, some endless mode, but seeing how devs are adding some lame stuff like a single ship in MAJOR UPDATE... dude, give modders a chance and you will have dozens of new ships in a month.
I seriously doubt this game will ever reach its maximum potential.
And this is a major reasons for thumbs down: I don't support people who do that nonsense!

I want to like this game. I really do appreciate the amount of development and ideas that has gone into this concept.

There is something overwhelmingly unsatisfying about this game. I believe there is always a point where managing too much stuff strips away fun-factor. You have to find balance and I think this game did not find it.

Managing food. Fuel for your ship. Credits for repairs. Exotics for trade. Running out of storage for stuff you find constantly. Having no room for components you find or earn from combat. Managing amount of ammunition and rockets for space battles. Limited space on your ship for desired upgrades/components.

Combat is lackluster so far. It's still early, perhaps if and when I get a larger ship and lock down what actually works and feels satisfying, I'll enjoy it. But as of the first few systems. I find combat slow and boring and uninteresting.

Leveling up your crew and managing your crew is overwhelming and difficult to navigate in my opinion. Perhaps it just takes a lot of practice. There's just so many interfaces to consider. Too much content sometimes takes away from a game.

I keep on trying to play it and enjoy it. Perhaps someday I will finally love it. But for now, in the 6.5 hours of playtime I've invested, it's lost its appeal. I'm about to give up and find a different game that keeps me hooked.

It's like if you took FTL and un-streamlined everything. Lots of micromanagement required, some things are unbalanced, some things are not explained well.

I had some fun, but really this just made me want to go back to playing FTL.

Is Shortest Trip to Earth like FTL? Yes. Everything is more detailed, from movement to firing accuracy to crew stats. This detail slows down the game, and I will not suggest it. If you are choosing between this game and FTL, FTL is the better game, unless you have a love of spreadsheets. If you already played FTL, and want more of the same, this game is not that.

This is a fun game.
This is a hard game.
To beat this game you must awaken your mind to the TRUTH that your cargo space is additional module spots that are not powered. Your cargo space should be filled with your economy modules in combat and your combat modules in travel. You must free your mind of such mortal thoughts of your cargo containers can't be ever unequipped and that you need your noncomabt sensor to always be functional. These thoughts have no place here as there is not enough cargo space for them. There is only the cargo hold and the preset buttons and when you have an excess of space anywhere fill it. This is the only way.
In conclusion you see container module slots I see maximum HP due to a robust design.
You see weapon slots I see room for 7 more DIY microgroweries.

This game is great!

If you enjoyed FTL but didn't want to be running from 'the fleet' all the time, then you'll like this.

It's a more paced out version of the game with a lot more detail around your crew and the placement of your equipment.

All in all, there's more management involved and more resources to trade and use.

If you like micro management (or the ability to somewhat easymode-automate it) then you'll enjoy this.

If you want the simple nature of FTL, then this might be too much.

This is one of the better survival sci-fi roguelites I've played. If you liked FTL but wish it had more complexity and was longer, this game is perfect for you. I like the perk system a lot, too. Keep in mind that this game is HEAVILY LUCK-BASED, and you will lose repeatedly due to bad luck, but you should expect that when going into the roguelite genre. The game is difficult even on lower difficulties, so be prepared for that. The game some bugs and broken achievements when I first picked it up, but those have been fixed.

More content compared to FTL but fighting multiple ships at the same time while managing more crew members and modules doesn't make the game as fun as FTL, in fact, it's chaotic and requires more micromanagement. It's missing features like the ability to board enemy ships and control over compartments (no rooms here). FTL is by far the better game, certainly in terms of balance, however that doesn't mean this one is bad, it's decent. The question becomes whether you want to play a lesser version of FTL. Final verdict: Meh.

Start a game. Be presented with no help at first. Once it decides to offer you help it offers you useless dialog boxes with one sentence and wall of entries to choose from with inscrutible names and even more useless text. Have 3 easy fights with no idea what's happening. Warp to next system. Get immediately demolished by something that completely ignores your weaponry. Such fun.

Start another run, maybe you got unlucky. Exactly the same thing happens.

Go play FTL instead, that's actually fun and has a decent difficulty curve.

A friend recommended this to me when I mentioned having a hankering for FTL, but being frustrated by the overzealous RNG in Out There.

Major win. I've had the game for less than a week and already put 52 hours into it (in my defense I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm not doing much right now but sitting on my ass).

I still think the RNG can be pretty unforgiving sometimes -- I once had the game wallop me with an unwinnable, un-fleeable fight on my first jump between systems -- but for the most part I feel like I have a satisfying level of control, and more often than not it's attrition that leads to my demise, and not a sudden, random, unavoidable knife in the back. I haven't beaten it yet, but I'm improving and I haven't hit a wall yet, either. The game has a level of complexity that feels interesting without getting too overwhelming.

Explanations about the many and various icons listed on modules like weapons or engines aren't very clear. You can figure some of them out at a glance -- the one for 'damage to shields' looks very obviously like a beam hitting a shield -- but some of the others aren't as obvious.

Anyway, this game ticks all of the boxes for me as far as what I might want out of a game like this, so I'd recommend it to anybody, provided they don't hate the usual rogue-lite gameplay loop of trying-dying-trying again.

I will probably still play it couple more times, but the game has very dubious design decisions which interfere with fun.
1. All modules have few hitpoints and lucky hit or two will destroy the subsystem. If it was radar subsystem, you will be blind until you find a station that sells it. Or if you have a lot of resources, you could make one. But it is pretty expensive to do that. And there are such unlucky battles where 3-4 systems can be destroyed, so every such battle makes you weaker.
2. Enemy can randomly attack you from the behind, where there are engines but no Point Defense installed. You can never catch enemy and attack him from behind.
3. Weapons have pretty poor descriptions, often I am not sure if weapon A or weapon B is better.
4. Nukes are convoluted, expensive to makefor player and obviously free for AI. If your PD were destroyed in last fight, you are so dead.
5. Boarding is so lame. AI gets free boarding pods, and you cannot board enemy ship.
6. That brings me to fires and inability to have reasonable door system. I cannot lock doors or vent enemy boarders while being safe in 1-2 rooms.
7. There are perks that are unlocked with multiple plays. While that could a charm, it feels like forcing player to pad hours. Also perks that come to next playthroughs are also... dubious.
8. 27% of players have reached Sector 4... which is couple of hours of game time. Shows the joy people are getting.

Eh, I will go and install FTL again. Got few hundred hours there and each hour was fun, even if sometimes desperation beating enemy on last hitpoint. Also PD were actual good PD there.

The majority of the gameplay is managing resources and frequently rearranging module/personnel placement to maximize your chance to win battles that mostly based on luck.

I beat the game on easy mode with 3 different ships.
Then I think ,while playing another ship, this is tedious as HELL!, and uninstalled the game.

FTL is far better.

This game is amazing, I would describe it as an Oregon Trail-type game in its maniacal difficulty(on challenging), but with a really cool space combat system that allows you to allocate resources towards shields, lasers, machine guns, or armor plating. Shortest Trip is extremely challenging but very addictive and fun.

I really like this game. It has great potential, but as many others have pointed out, it is far too random. It's marketed as being difficult but it's really just a combination of RNG plus poor balancing. Sometimes the game gives you no defenses and every fight involves multiple ships, each with an arsenal. Other times, you have such an abundance of resources and easy enemies that the game gets boring.

The game expects you to play tactically and target specific modules, but even with skill maxed gunners, you are lucky to hit your target 25% of the time. You can aim 6 guns at a single module and end up destroying the ship before you ever hit it. Fire guns rarely make fires. EMP guns miss the module and strike the floor, doing nothing. Even nukes miss their targets. Snipers are so weak to point defense that they quickly become obsolete. Cannons cost far too much resources considering their payloads can be shot down or miss completely. Shields are completely useless given that most lasers have extremely high shield damage. Repairs are prohibitively expensive making every victory feel like a loss. Even exploration quickly becomes a chore. Maybe you will get resources and maybe you will lose them. The dialogue is completely meaningless because it's just a dice roll.

The problem is that you have absolutely no control over any of it. The game gives the illusion of choice when in reality, you are forced to use whatever it gives you. Do you want a stronger weapon, better shields, more armor, skilled crew, more missile defense? Well, it doesn't matter because everything is random. Do you want to explore or fight? Well it doesn't matter because you can't progress without both. There's no strategy, you just get stuck doing whatever the game feels like. It's almost like it plays itself and you're just clicking next.

I love this game and it is ugly as heck. Do not get this game if you want a pretty game of any form. It is straight up hideous to look at. The game is made to let you build a self-sustaining spaceship that can destroy other spaceships. That's it, mapped across a FTL progression system.

Now, I am really on the line between good and bad review because they've recently released DLC for the game at the price of 10$. Now, I'm not against DLC but in this content pack you get exactly ONE new ship to play as and a few random enemy encounter ships. A total rip when the game is 25$ and you start with a decent selection of ships already. To push this content out and then expect anyone to buy it is just rude. I don't know if they're starving for cash or what but they don't really release content for huge swaths of time and then when they do, they charge for it? Seems lame.

TL;DR
I like the ugly game that the devs are now squeezing for money.

Combat sucks, and this pretty much ruins the rest of the game. With good combat it would have been a nice FTL clone, although it doesn't have anything new to offer.

Why combat sucks:

One, It is really hard to see what is going on. Everything is tiny, especially your crew, and modules are really hard to tell apart. Your crew has to be inside modules to operate them, this makes everything even harder to see. FTL did this right by making rooms the essential components rather than modules. And since STTE doesn't use FTL's split view, during battle you have to either be zoomed all the way out (making everything even more impossible to tell apart) or you have to look at one ship at a time and constantly miss critical events. Battles often involve multiple opponents too, making this even worse.

Two, the accuracy mechanic is horrible. Yes, you can improve accuracy. But the baseline is way too low. It feels as if it doesn't matter at all where you are aiming, your shots will be all over the entire possible field of fire anyway and if there is even a little empty space where you are aiming, you often miss the enemy ship completely. Again, accuracy and misses in FTL did this right.

Combat in STTE just feels bad because of other little reasons that all add up. For example modules are damaged too easily and take just a little too long to repair. You will often end up fighting another ship while each of you has one functional weapon left. So you find yourself waiting for a long and very boring amount of time doing tiny amounts of damage to each other and missing shots.

Other than combat the game didn't seem like it had anything new to offer. If combat was fun, I would probably have enjoyed it as a good clone of FTL with more emphasis on micromanagement. But since it is really hard to tell everything apart, managing your crew and ship isn't fun at all either. All in all, the game creates new problems for itself where solutions already exist, and it doesn't even manage to differentiate itself in doing so.

Last but not least some bugs (?) like having to restart the game if you want to move it to another monitor and change the resolution.

It's a more complex version of FTL. I had to read every line in the tutorial. Needs much more focus and details with small icons.
If you have not played FTL and looking for something with Rimworld or prison architect complexity but in space this is for you.

This has way too much going on in a way I find it out of my hand and difficult to manage. May be its the UI. Not for me.

I'm really sorry I wasted money on this game and cant get a refund...
No saving, no loading, no easy mode for casual players. I want to enjoy my spare time not get frustrated. THIS is the kind of info you want to include in the game description. The gameplay is like a improved mobile game => FTL (Faster than light)

So if you like games where you need to try multiple times to barely make it. This is the game for you.

I'm enjoying playing this game, though I also understand that the DLC is only half completed. It's quite challenging and time consuming, and it requires quite a bit of micro in order to survive and conserve resources. There are some good playthroughs on YouTube as well as a slightly older, but helpful tips and tricks. If something doesn't look right, it's likely a bug, and the best way to solve it is to leave the game and resume after closing out.

This sounded really interesting, but it's too much of a frustration-fest. FTL was far less frustrating and more fun, and with such great games as Monster Train available this one is just not worth my time.

So this game is great but it has some heavy drawbacks to it.
Pros:
Addicting game play.
Great RNG (with exceptions)
Overall gameplay mechanics are quite fun
The game has all the greatest part of FTL and games like rimworld. The style fits the gameplay wonderfully.
Cons:
Balancing
Balancing
Balancing
Inability to trade items without scrapping them first.
Weapons slots of your ships vs enemy ships doesnt scale. Complete RNG failure here. First area you can face a ship that has 8 turret slots when you have 2 or 3 or 4 but no more.
Cost of upgrades would fix this in balance but again the rng of ship enemies/events vs area needs to be recalculated just a hair.
Enemy ships need to have a resource count as well prolonged engagements should be a war of attrition. They are not because the enemy never runs out of resources.

Overall it is a really good game but without the balancing fixes its a grind from hell to make any real progress and it can be undone just from jumping into an area and being engaged before you can even have sensors or be finished with the warp in. Balancing needs some serious work. I love the hardcore aspects but I want to feel like I stand a chance. Getting bombarded by 8 cannons and 3 nukes instantly in a fight is a bit much when I am in the first zone.

I would say wait and see if there are balance changes. The game just needs a little TLC not much just a little but for people that want to feel they stand at least a smidge of a chance.... There's gotta be some adjustments made.

Game needs a serious look at balance as it has so much potential but falls down with real issues. I love rogue-likes and understand bad RNG sometimes, but this is overkill. The asymmetrical usage of the nukes (especially fire ones) is the biggest flaw since the computer spams them at you and they are too expensive for you to use regularly.

2 examples from sector 2 ( I have finished the game several times, but these are good for how early they are):

1- Battle starts with computer ship throwing 2 flame nukes at my ship. I assign 4 crew to firefighting, but shield, warp and a weapon all are destroyed before fire gets put out. Done

2- Exit sector 1 and first fight in 2 is the pirate queen who on the first volley knocks offline my shield, warp and a gun. Done. Advice in all forums is escape right away (true) since even when you win the loot is total garbage. Correct since her main weapon is custom that cannot be looted and the rest is junk.

This happens regularly and an effective immediate kill right at battle start on a regular basis does not make a fun game. Rogue like games are about dying and starting over. I have the achievement for starting over 50 times and about 1% of players have this and that tells me most players get frustrated and stop playing.

Too bad because so much promise here.

If you played faster than light this game is everything you think it will be. A lightly more robust detailed version with mini bosses at the end of every sector. I have only progressed through one sector and the difficulty curve seems to jump massively upon entering the next sector. Due to the Rogue like nature each sector feels like a complete game on its own with the expectation of not making it vary far until you unlock many of the intro upgrade (I have not been through this process yet because I have not died yet but came very close upon entering the second sector which I am presently in.) I was slightly turned off by some of the negative reviews from people who have played FTL and to my satisfaction I do not share their view. The expectation of death and finding out of game upgrades that help you in each subsequent game adds replayability. Something that made FTL feel old as I approached many hours of game play. I am still in the intro of this game but the feelings I have for it are exceeding my expectations which were high from the beginning. The art work and and clarity from the visuals are the biggest let down, It is easy to get lost when looking for something or click on a module versus person in the room, it can be hard to find people or tell the difference between people and robots ect. This complaint does not detract from the game play by much. There does seem to be less depth in clarity of attack styles that FTL excelled at but I will see how much this takes away from the game as I progress through it I could be wrong. On the whole the game feels every bit of the game I wanted when I first saw it on steam. Be prepared to have an hours worth of intro and tutorial and in game learning before you feel comfortable.

Verdict is great game so far. Love space ship manager this is a good game. I hope my experience only gets better as I play and die through it.

1. Combat imbalance.

There's currently still no counter to enemies who use multishot fast projectiles. They would spam you to death with this, and there's nothing you could do about it because your point defense system can't shoot them down quickly enough. The whole game basically forces you to just get as many weapons as you can and hope for the best. It's really just an inferior version of FTL.

2. No build variety.
Can't really do dodge build at all. Common ECM modules give you a sum total of 3% evasion, big deal. By the time you are lucky enough to get better ones, it ceases to matter. Shield build works fine for the most part until you encounter an enemy with a weapon that does 10 damage per shot!! Now imagine if 2 ships shooting at you with this. Your shield will be gone in seconds, even when you have like 5 shield generators. Point defense build? Well, as mentioned before, even the best point defense (commercial variant) sucks very hard against even some of the common projectiles weapons. Currently projectile weapons are extremely op, and the AI's will spam you to death because they have unlimited ammo.

There's only one viable build. Get as many weapons as you can and hope for the best, which makes this game very boring, monotone and somehow very RNG dependent. You don't pick up good weapons? You die, simple as that.

3. Most ships really suck. Not much you can do about some of them. They are destined to die in sector 2 or 3 at best.

TLDR Don't waste your time. Go play FTL instead.

I think it really fit the hole that was missing when FTL 2 didn't come out. It expands on the sectors which allow for more variability. I enjoy the warp universe aspect. Random encounters were fun and I was always trying to find cool parts for the ship.
Inventory choices were plentiful, and I feel the ship choices made each run unique.
Would like to see maybe more story depth in the next?
I liked the addition of the slot saving for setups but it does kind of break the fourth wall in story immersion.

Have had a lot of fun with this game. Worth it.

Update: I think the part that falls short in this game and what I would have liked to have seen is better balance towards the boarding and taking over of the ship. As it stands there, is no real extra value in boarding the enemy ship , so why do it ? There are some weapons that focus on the crew but if that is tougher , there is no advantage to using that. I t makes for a dead weapon choice loadout.

If you loved FTL, but thought it could with just a dash extra crunch, you'll love this one. Unlike most FTL-clones, this one keeps all the basic elements in place (except one or two really minor ones) and just adds a few pieces that add just enough more depth.

For example: a few more resources (organics, synthetics, and exotics), a more robust travel and radar system (fully 2-dimensional, with hidden events that can be discovered by exploration), no explicit chase/rebel fleet mechanic (which gives a little more room for that exploration), android crew that function slightly differently than organic crew, and so forth.

These all add up to an FTL-like experience that just feels a lot roomier and more open, with more options for tinkering with your ship and trying different builds.

This game knows exactly what it's going for and it does it quite well. A hearty recommendation.

My experience: I have beaten the game with every ship and on the hardest mode. Please note that my playtime doesn't really reflect how much I played this game. I tend to leave whatever game I'm playing running when I'm AFK doing other things. That said, it probably would've taken at least 100 hours to accomplish what I have if Steam only counted when I was actually playing.

I've played some games which shared some attributes of this one but, really, not even FTL is all that close. You can move around much more than FTL. You're not always running away - in fact, you're running to the fight. The boarding mechanics are simpler here than FTL. The ship to ship combat and crew management is much more fleshed out here. I can't think of any other games like this but, if you can, feel free to leave me a comment!

The Sights

Pixel-art with no fantastic visuals. Nothing stood out as bad or good.

The Sounds

Pretty basic. The music isn't bad but isn't timed well to the things going on in the game. I switched to my own music. Goa/Psy fits a lot better.

The Loop

The gameplay loop is definitely the center of the game. When playing, you will move your ship from sector to sector, solar system to solar system, and you will explore around gathering materials to help you in your fight to get back to Earth and find out what happened. You'll buy modules that will increase your shield points and regeneration, damage ability, give your crew places to sleep, and more. You will assign crew to specific things, save that as a preset, and then create more presets for more situations. Much of the management happens while the game is either paused or while you're in space or near a space station with no threats around. Ship to ship fighting is all about picking which modules you want to take out, which will change from situation to situation.

All of the fights are scripted. They're the same with every run-through - the same enemies in the same sectors, though they might move throughout the sector. If you don't like managing things like equipment and people to get the results you want, then this is not the game for you. Personally, I enjoyed the heck out of it.

The Struggles

Many people seem to have difficulty with this game but I found it extremely easy to pick up and go. There are three modes of difficulties and even the hardest isn't that hard. However, it does take thought. You do have to plan, manage your crew, and set up good loadouts.

The Bugs (or lack of)

I didn't have a single crash in all the hours that the game was on. However, there are some bugs with some of the features in the game, such as the loadout settings not saving correctly, people ramming each other in the corner instead of getting into their cryo-bed, and some achievements unlocking. There are some things that should have unlocked near the beginning that are still locked for me. I tried posting in both the general discussion as well as the bug report area and received no reply to either, even after weeks.

The Yarn

The story is pretty bland and not very well held together - it's only maybe 8 paragraphs in length. Some of the side stuff is more entertaining, such as the robot that yells YOU NEED HELP if you encounter it when damaged. There are some typos but not anything that off-putting. All that said, the writer of the story was certainly not an English professor or practiced novelist.

The Eff-pee-esses
I have a feeling this game will run on a dead gerbil. My 5700 XT certainly had no issues.

The Future
The last major update was in April 2020. I kept hoping to see an update while I played, but nope. Not sure if this means they're done or if they're doing something big or if they just don't have the time to update the game frequently. It plays well enough as-is, though, so even though developers have promised lots of future updates, it's still worth playing.

The Cost

The normal asking price is $24.99 USD and while I don't think that's a really high price, I do think that it's a bit out of line with other Indie games. It plays more like a $15.99 game, in my opinion. However, it's almost always on sale somewhere. isthereanydeal.com is your friend.

The Game

If you like sci-fi and you like people and equipment managing, you'll like this game. Otherwise, you may find it tedious since the gameplay loop is admittedly quite short, even though you do the same loop is fairly rapid succession. In closing, here is a list of game features:
  • Multiple ships that require different strategies to succeed.
  • A perk system where points are generated throughout your play and are used at the beginning of the next run.
  • A somewhat randomized crew which can be supplemented with other random crew found in other places.
  • The ability to navigate within each sector.
  • A story... sort of.
  • A choice between cannons and beam weapons, along with some other less.
  • Replayability as you get further, and then as you try to beat the game with all of the various ships.

Requires a lot of micromanagement which just doesn't pay off. The end result doesn't feel satisfying.

Having modules stored in the configuration is a step in the right direction, but still with the optimal battle configuration you should have the battle stuff in the container slots, which means you can't move, which means you have to maintain 3 configurations, pre-battle, battle and travel. Switching between them, keeping them updated and inventory management is where most of the time is spent.

Also the battles are pretty meh. Once you've seen 10 encounters, you've seen them all.

You can build a game-winning ship early on, and once you do, it becomes pretty boring.

This game has some great concepts, but they don't all work well together.

I played this during early release and it was okay, fun, tedious. But now with full release and all the quality of life updates, it's SO much better. I played FTL yesterday, then today I play this...it's night and day better, especially in the immersion and freedom department. No longer being forced to jump right, can truly explore, and the variety of exploration items seems to be more vast than FTL. I hope they keep developing this game, I'd totally pay for DLC if it comes to that. Seems the devs have also added more aesthetically pleasing art for the full release.

I would really like to love this game, but I can't. It could basically be summed up as a more in-depth version of FTL, with larger more customizable ships, larger crew and more layers to the rock paper scissors combat of FTL. Everything is there, but the approach they've taken is just... asinine. I like the combat, I like the over layered meta play of systems, sectors, ship overview, it's great. It's just that everything is an investment for ... well, fleeting handfuls of fuck-all. You can spend forever putting lots of effort into, what crew member goes into what subsystem, layouts of your ship, which modules you'l use, what type of build you will go for, how you will tactically approach combat, but it's all for naught really. You'd expect runs to give you a few hours of fun, with all that investment and learning, but nope, enemy encounters are all one end of a spectrum, and it just becomes a chore trying to deal with enemies that all just fit one boring extreme. And if you are unlucky to come across one that you don't specifically counter, it's just a chore trying to mitigate you're downfalls, not fun tactics, just boring inane patching of cracks. This is glossing over the fact that combat can just decide you are dead, weither its a fire that was non-mitigatable or a stray shot, one shotting all important subsystems at once, one stray combat can just endgame a hell of a lot of effort in an instant. It isn't hard, its just... disappointing. To have a game that goes so much in depth and commitment, to basically instagib a few hours worth of non-regainable investment. To some it up, the game captures the idea of FTL, expands on it, but the spirit isn't there. It takes an investment from you but is ultimately hollow and disappointing to have played

If you ever wanted to play ftl but without time rush and with more crew and with more flying and with more economy and with more complicated ships and with more ... you get it - then you'll absolutely love this one.
And gosh, main screen soundtrack. I just spent a good hour simply listening to it (after true hoarder's death in sector 2 heh).

Most games will offer an easy difficulty everyone can handle well from the get go. This is not one of those games - and judging from the reviews this puts a lot of people off. The game can be learnt though, through trial, error and strategical thinking. The game deserves a way better rating than it currently has!

I appreciate the devs making the game hard and permadeath, simply because it forces me to play in a fashion I normally don't play games. It's also a rather good design choice for the game overall, in tradition of the rogue genre - it adds to the longuity of the game.

STTE is a hard game, fortunately it's also fun to master! You will probably die and have to restart the game a couple of times just to learn it! If you struggle, you can unlock more ships and permanent perks, which will make the game gradually a little bit easier. But the most gain is from you improving your strategies and knowledge of the game.

I highly recommend Shortest Trip to Earth for experienced strategy gamers that don't mind micromanagement.

Don't look away from the screen in combat captain, it could be your death!

As someone who loved FTL, I really enjoyed the direction STtE took the genre. It's not as tight of an experience as FTL, but it makes up for it with a metric ton of variety and depth.

Everything from crew skills to modules to resources to trade to damage/repairs to combat has been expanded. It can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you'll quickly get the hang of it. The ability to set travel mode and combat mode ship positions (and recently the ability to add even more presets) is a god-send and an indication of a developer that wants to challenge their players without overwhelming them with tedium.

It really is a great game, and it's come a long way from its initial release. If you think you'll enjoy a weird hybrid of FTL and a colony management game - you'll love STtE.

Excellent game...felt like FTL 2.0.

Pros
- decent story, great interface
- solid selection of weapons and ships
- great tradeoff in choices that need to be made in order to be successful

Cons
- replayability is limited. After unlocking all of the ships by winning the game, not much after that. Challenging was challenging though.

An extremely enjoyable experience! It's punishing but fair, at least on beginner difficulty ;). I found that a full playthrough is about 12 hours or so (as long as you don't die), and the game has tons of replay value. If you've ever played FTL, this is that on steroids. 9.5/10

Initial Disclaimer: I have over 200h on FTL and i have perfected Slay the Spire. I am familiar with Roguelikes/lites. I like hard games.

But i Like hard games where I can can get better and more skilled. Shortest Trip to Earth has GREAT potential and mechanics, but lacks in balance and is has way too much RNG.

Add mod support and I will change my review in an instant. I am pretty sure the community could fix the game in a couple days.

But until we get mod support or get a few balance fixes ( not to make game easier , just less RNG dependant) i cannot recommend this game.

Pros:
- Great resource management system
- Decent UI
- Module replacement and storage done right
- Few QoL mechanics like saving roles and modules/power and quick acess to weapons, also everything has shortcuts
- Repair system is pretty cool

Cons:
- Nukes availability
- Loot from enemies ( sometimes destroying 3 enemy ships yields less loot than 1 ship)
- All events seem pure RNG
- Shop inventory needs a buff
- Weapons balance are bad
- Shields are mostly useless
- Hard to upgrade your ship in a meaningfull way

I might not be the intended audience for this game, but I gave it a shot and just didn't find it very rewarding.
This game is much more technical than FTL and there is a strong possibility that I'm just bad at it, but I felt that a lot of the game's aspects are out of my hands while playing.
All of the items are so similar I hardly found reason to switch from the different variations and ended up hardly modifying the starting ship's layout.
There are a lot of variables that go into the weapons, but when you actually go to fight all you do is point them at the ship and hope that your ship doesn't get decimated before theirs explodes.
Exploring also seems like a random potluck of finding resources.
I just feel like if they reduced the game's scope and focused more on less aspects it would have been more enjoyable, instead I just feel anxious and irritated when playing.

This is a fun (for a while) FTL-like that sadly isn't as well-designed as FTL, which really hurts its long-term appeal. You might notice that even the people who left positive reviews rarely played for more than 40ish hours, many played for less than 20. I feel I'm 'done' after 49. Still, I recommend it on a sale, and think the developers deserve the support. Future games by this studio could be really great!

Pros:

-Ships are more modifiable compared to FTL, which is a lot of fun. Modules (weapons, shield batteries etc) can be moved around, but are limited to certain types of 'slots', most of which can be upgraded or downgraded using resources. Which side of your ship modules on are matters, because enemies usually (with some exceptions) attack from one side, some modules are more fragile than others and point defenses have a limited effectiveness radius.

-Deeper resource management, which I personally enjoyed, though YMMV. Each resource is equally important, there are even weapons that consume food (or synthetics, or metals) when fired!

-Since the most recent update, there's a really nice number of random planet and anomaly events

-Discovery matters more than in FTL, and you have time to explore, though exploration costs resources and systems are usually only 10 or so stars. It's not like you can farm endlessly, which is a good thing. Even at 49 hours I still occasionally discovered events I had never seen before. And you can scan for anomalies by moving your ship around inside a starsystem.

-More crew than in FTL, which I generally enjoyed. You can even crew science or garden modules that generate food or credits while you move around.

-Decent number of unlockable perks and ships

-Decent number of different weapons and other module types

Cons:

My number 1 pet peeve is that this game is awfully predictable. You always complete the same sectors, and always in the same order, which makes runs extremely predictable and somewhat tiresome after a while. For instance, the third sector will always have one super simple quest, lots of refueling stations and few to no enemies.

Likewise, the enemy variety is extremely limited, and each sector is always limited to the same 3-5 enemy types. Even their ships are always similarly equipped! There are battles with up to 3 ships where each ship is 95% the same, with only extremely minor variations. This sameyness hurts my desire to keep starting new runs. I haven't defeated the final boss yet, but I feel like I've seen everything.

The game isn't nearly as difficult as the developer advertises. FTL is difficult on normal +. STTE is just about finding the win button (high evasion, lots of skilled crew, lots of weapon slots and other ship upgrades), and then pressing it on every new run once you've figured out how to beat the next higher boss. In fact, by now I find it almost impossible not to reach the final sectors. Some reviewers complain about randomness, but this is actually WAY less random than FTL. Sadly. It would have much more long-term appeal if it wasn't so damn predictable.

There's even an entire sector that's basically a shopping mall and hands you lots of credits and resources to eliminate the effects of any minor bad luck you may have had until then! For me, difficulty is about not knowing if I'll even be able to reach the final boss. It's about occasionally dying in the early sectors before you even get very far. That's what roguelikes are about, this game isn't a roguelike. It's far too predictable for that and tries to balance runs far too much.

-Only one quest (sector 3) in the whole game. Next to no bonus event outcomes based on your crew or ship equipment. Remember all those neat blue text event options from FTL? None of them are here. I've seen ONE dialogue option change because I had a rat as part of my crew in sector 1. That's it.

-While there are a lot of unlockable perks, almost all of them do basically the same thing: they give you a) more Fate points for future runs (but once you've figured out how to have a long run every time, you won't know what to do with all those Fate points), or they give you extra crew, or extra resources, or extra / better starting ship modules. Most of those perks are pretty uninteresting, and a lot of them you'll never use except to get rid of all those Fate points you'll be swimming in.

-Likewise, unlocking perks is extremely predictable (by completing sectors), but there's no way to know what you're going to unlock. It's possible to have a run where you only get boring stuff you'll never really need or use.

-While there is a decent variety of unlockable ships, and their gameplay varies somewhat at the beginning, after several completed sectors they'll all play pretty much the same. Plus, ships with more module slots will always trump over the starting ships. The later ships are just 'better'. There's no reason to use some of them other than to challenge yourself, there won't be significant differences in gameplay. Nothing like the stealth or mantis ship from FTL that truly feel different.

-Missiles and cannons are pretty much useless because enemy point defenses will always shoot them down, especially in later sectors. Nukes are only useful in the early sectors for the same reason. Plus, the ones you can buy / craft only have a handful of hitpoints (which is why they always get shot down) while enemies somehow get to use nukes with 8 or 14 hitpoints that you never get to buy or craft. Considering their high resource cost, they're usually a waste except in a few very specific situations.

Clicking on the button to tell them to turn off data mining does absolutely nothing, and the developer/publisher ignored me when I asked them why - and asked them how to disable their data mining...

It would 10x better if after going through a hard battle the ships would blow up in a spectateur explosions with parts of the enemy getting ripped off the hull of the ship (like the final boss in FTL). At the moment the ships just turn into bright blobs of light which gets boring after the first 2 battles. Add cooler ship deaths!

Too much micro management at the end game and too much RNG. I don't feel like my choices in the early game have enough impact on the late game.

Awfully complicated for no reason. I am not against complex games, with thousands of hours of Eve Online and other games but this game is overly complicated without a reward. Other reviews describe it better than I can but I prefer all other roguelikes in my Catalogue over this game.

Poorly balanced and some very frustrating mechanics (health, food, research to make money, boarding suck, ...). Managing crew health is annoying and hard, accumulating money and buying modules almost impossible (cant sell modules, all your money will have to get elsewhere), making missile is expensive and cripple ressources, managing crew is not fun and a pain to do. The game has too many mechanics and they are poorly balanced, so it is very hard and not rewarding. Cant pass second sector at beginner after 6 hours. Learning curve is playing 25 mins games at beginner and dying, trying to learn something. I am a diehard FTL player, but can do anything in this game. Some good ideas and potential, just not working right now

A lot of people compare it to FTL, which on the surface makes sense, but from what I've played it's more similar to Rimworld or Out There. It's more much more focused on exploration and survival, rather then combat and efficiency (although it still has those). The game is long, hard, desperate, and sometimes just not fun. Despite this, I found myself enjoying Shortest Trip to Earth, and the many unique encounters I found along the way.
(Except the fate system, it incentivizes you to continue runs that are not longer enjoyable and/or win-able)

Good concept and could be fun but 'deliberately' impossible to win, no save game, ridiculous odds, over matched, imbalanced, re-starting from the same level/place, tedious and repetitive. I could go on. I have played this game for over 170 hours, trying endless combinations to no avail. C'mon, wake up and fix it. Until then, don't waste your money.

I'd have preferred to have given this game a more mixed review, like a 3/5 or something like that. But broadly speaking, I can't recommend it in its current state.

I've been playing the game for upwards of a year now, well-before the final release. I've seen a number of rebalances and mechanical tweaks (in some cases, very significant ones). If I had to describe the central problem in a nutshell, the game gained too many mechanics. The number of crew skills made what was once a slick interface extremely bloated; major overhauls to ship dynamics and weapons have made for a meta that just isn't fun anymore. The problem was that with each update the game just became less and less fun and more of a chore. I appreciated the level of sophistication and storytelling, but overtime it became overwhelmed by the fact that I was juggling 20 different crew members with increasingly niche skills.

It's hard to write this because the game devs deserve considerable credit for the scope of their ambition, and I feel like I had my money's worth of fun. But that was several versions ago; the current one to me is just a hassle to play.
