Über das Spiel

Shroud of the Avatar: Forsaken Virtues is a multiplayer fantasy RPG and the spiritual successor to Richard Garriott’s wildly successful Ultima and Ultima Online games.

Shroud of the Avatar is about testing one’s character on a path filled with peril and tough decisions. Player actions carry meaningful consequences within the deep and persistent world of New Britannia by either upholding or breaking the Principles of Truth, Love, and Courage.

Shroud of the Avatar is developed by the veteran Portalarium team that includes Richard "Lord British" Garriott, the creator of the Ultima series, Starr Long, the original Director of Ultima Online, and Tracy Hickman, the author of the beloved Dragonlance Novels and Dungeons & Dragons modules.

As a revival of the classical in-depth RPG, Shroud of the Avatar binds together many of the key features that made the Ultima series so popular:

  • A far reaching story written in collaboration with celebrated fantasy author Tracy Hickman, where players are confronted with ethical choices based on Virtues and Principles.
  • Multiple MMO gameplay features combined to offer a unique, shared online experience set within a persistent sandbox world.
  • The ability to create a classless avatar allows for distinct play styles and uniquely specialized builds.
  • Wide-reaching freedom to explore a living, breathing fantasy world enriched by a player-driven crafting and economic system.
  • Players can opt to play solo or with friends, owning their own houses or even entire towns, and sign up and cooperate within various in-game guilds.
  • Pay Once to Play with no subscription fees.

First of all, I would like to say that this game is the golden palace of games for housing fans. You like to grow plants? You can here, you like to exhibit animals, you can here and much much more.

I have the game so far 22 hours and several times Angefangen, the controls, the system is generally for newcomers still a bit overwhelming. But have you managed this hurdle, a really great game waiting for you!

The friendliest community for a long time. The game mixes Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot, in a nice way.

For cons, I had not seen much yet, but think there will not be much. Am already very excited :D!

Should something change I like to update my feedback.

Wow! Also so geht das? Niiiiiicht!

This game has some appealing design elements from both Ultima VII and MUDs but ultimately just sort of a completely characterless and aimless game full of tacky abandoned player housing that tanks your framerate when you go near it.

Gave it a try due to my love for Ultima Online. While some mechanics certainly invoke some nostalgia, the game itself isn't that well made.
The targeting and combat feel bad and unresponsive. Enemy AI is weird to none existent. The UI is cluttered and does a bad job with providing necessary information. The inventory.. UO's inventory wasn't great compared to today's standards but it's miles ahead of whatever mangled excel sheet from 1995 this is...
Quests: You must make sure to click on the highlighted phrases within the quest text or the quest won't register and quest items won't drop, despite the NPC having already told you what to do.

THe 'Overworld' isn't very appealing to me either. It's kinda insane how much of a regression this is compared to UO's open world.

wildly, I'm going to say, recommended.

If you go in with your eyes open, and you're ready for the 100% guaranteed rubbish that is in the game, then, this is actually a hidden gem that will give you 100s of hours of fun, and it's free.

the bad:
- no waifu
- low population mmo
- combat animation was cutting edge in 2003
- bugs / memory leaks, especially in the cities
- hardly any in game guidance about how to play the game
- appalling in game music that a Dollar Store would be ashamed of
- controversial kickstarter / funding 10 years ago that's left a very bad taste
- hardly any / zero cut scenes or voice acting

the good:
- one of, if not the most, innovative and ambitious skill system in any mmo. You can combine spells and skills into something unique, even have an unlocked skill bar where the skills are all drawn from a deck. Way way ahead of its time.
- strong active community with great player-made guides
- game is still supported and devs are still slowly making content
- classless system, no need for alts. A mage in heavy armour with a shield, no problem.
- deep and rewarding crafting system. The best gear is made by the players,.
- well written quests with multiple possible outcomes and a really high degree of reactivity. You can be a paragon of virtue or a murder hobo.
- there are mounts, trainable combat pets, and fast travel (I'm looking at you, New World)
- more than four mob types...
- more than 3 skills...
- it's free. There is a store but you never feel pressured in game to buying anything. Game was originally buy to play.
- strong lore story to uncover
- very sandbox. Game is instanced but most story areas are very large with hidden quests that reward exploring and interaction

So there you have it. It's very niche, it's had a really bad press, mostly due to the funding controversy. But under the hood this game is actually ... fun?? Did I really say that??

Richard Garriott created my favorite game: Ultima Online. It quit being fun once players realized they could email whines to the developers, and the developers would change everything. This game is way less fun. It is very slow, and the NPCs and monsters are really dumb. I haven't played it long, but I wasn't having fun.

I don't even know were to begin ????. When your game have only 23 players online and you have to sell in-game town for up to 10 000$/Us real money to keep it alive, I think is the time to stop milking ???? the players that remain and pull the damn Fking plug ????????????

Controls are ridiculous for starters, you have to hold right mouse button down to look around, then there's auto combat...
Yes, you select an enemy by left clicking on it, then that's it, auto combat.
If you need further convincing not to play, 1st quest in the tutorial involved escorting a child to her parent in a village that had been attacked by undead. At one point she ran off to kill an armoured skeleton archer with her knife, so a lack of believable threat.

This game is what I would call a hidden gem. I have been playing MMOs since Ultima Online and most of them are total crap nowadays with very few exceptions. This game really surprised me though. It's the perfect MMO to play when you just wanna relax because you can play completely solo and still be able to get gear, level up and finish dungeons. You can even level up without fighting anything if you want to be only craft items and sell them.
The skill system allows for unlimited customization and the ability to max out (pretty much) every skill in the game. The hotbar/skill system is totally unique and allows for nearly limitless combinations of skills, but has a gigantic learning curve and can be very frustrating to figure out in the beginning. Once you get used to it though, it's very intuitive and rewarding.
The character customization is very robust allowing you to use any existing item as a costume. The housing system is where this game really stands out, allowing for unlimited customization of your house and the land surrounding it. Out of the 500 hours I have in this game I would say 200 were spent customizing my houses.
NOTE* There is a huge in-game microtransactional store, but nothing there is required to play the game. Most items are cosmetic and don't enhance your character in any way. This is NOT a pay to win game.

Give the game a fair chance and play past the tutorial. Get involved in the community and ask for help when needed!! If you get stuck, ask for help! This is a great game but does not spoon feed it's quests to players and it seems to frustrate a lot of people that do not have the patience for it.

SotA has gone through a lot of changes in the past year that really makes the offline-mode single-player experience compelling and immersive. It has just a little bit of that deep, other-worldly feeling like the old Ultimas had. The skill tree and main game controls are all fairly intuitive,

As for the online multiplayer experience, I can't say much about it. It's fun to run around and meet people, but I think the best part of the game is solo-mode.

I'd love to love this game, but the storyline and gameplay and graphics of Ultima Online were so much better. 24 years ago! Isometric just works better for MMORPGS, IMHO, but time will tell if Albion Online or New World have more staying power. I can tell you that I don't think this one has much going for it either way.

I didn't want to give this game a full thumbs down because I have too much respect for Richard Garriott (and for that matter, Lord Blackthorn). But it's not good, and there are much better options even in this era of not-great RPGs.

The absolute best combat/crafting/leveling system I've seen in an RPG. Classic approach to questing with puzzles, text interaction with npc's, player mentoring, and limited Journal detail to further buttress immersion (yes, buttress). Some areas still need work and combat can be resource intensive in large groups. Definitely give this one a shot - plenty of great folks to help you on your adventure! Developers - Please polish!

It's rough around the edges, to say the least. It's fun to go around exploring the player shops and custom houses and cities designed so carefully by people who likely spent a ton of money to have their own town. The NPCs standing waiting for player interaction, the notice boards and books written by players to guide newbies through the early game, the custom towns in this game are fascinating. It's all there, kind of lost in time. You can still find players, surprisingly, but they're either demi-gods who've been into this since the kickstarter or a few newbies who'll likely drop the game after sating their curiosity for this forgotten world. It's a funny feeling going into a huge player town or castle and seeing that one clearly super high level and beautifully geared player there just doing stuff by himself. People had faith in the game, but it never delivered, and it seems development is basically dead since the game was sold off.

TL:DR: Unfinished and unpolished game. Wouldn't recommend this as an MMO for anyone, but if you're morbidly curious like me, it's quite the experience, really makes you feel like an explorer.

This gamne is the spiritual successor to Ultima Online. Lord British, aka Richard Gariot SOLD OUT to a small game company and ran with the money. Lord Britsh went turn coat and ran off! The game can be fun, needs more content to be 5 years old as of this revue. the in game store is INSANE expensive. The community of cash auction traders and item traders is SMALL and tight knit. The skilling system is grueling. The housing is VERY nice and the main quest line sets you up with a nice house plot deed. Just buy a house and place it, and pay TAXES on it! The game is set up to take gold from you at an amazing rate. The only ones profiting like mad are the trader community and auctioning community and the NPC supply vendors! Otherwise a beautiful game with sweet housing deco and the ability to deco any item almost in your home, any where you want it. Crafting system is deep and thurough, but again, grueling.

Pros-
Unique
Open Skill System
ERP
Richard Garriott (Lord British) no longer in control of the game, as when he was it was a sinking ship.
Chris (@Catnip games) taking it in a better direction.
Housing System insane
Great Community!

Cons-
Takes a Rocket Ship to run over 30 FPS.
Low Population Community
Low game resources outside the game, do to the low population.

Ultima is what got me into PC gaming as a kid on the Commodore 64. I was a lifelong fan. But this... It's so awful. I backed the game on kick starter several years ago. I was supposed to get a boxed edition with a map or something like the original Ultima games. None of that ever arrived. I've tried playing it a few times over the years and it's clunky and boring. Every time I try to play it I'm just dumbstruck that a game like this can exist. I know it has a fan base and some like it but man to me it just smells.

After playing this game for a year and a half I can honestly say that Chris (the owner of the game) and the development team have really screwed half of the players by the nonstop nerfing of the game skills and gears. Every time the players start to have fun with something in the game and they nerf it in the monthly patch. The dev team has a tunnel vision and a one track mind. Chris is probaly the most uncreative and laziest programmer that we've ever seen (we have a group of 40-50 players in our Discord group). It's like they intentionally DO NOT want to have more players to join the game and the Devs designed the game just to cater to the selected few players that pays them the big bucks and ignore the majority of the players. I feel bad for the hundreds of early backers who have spent thousands of dollars and 5 years into this game. So, PLEASE DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME DOWNLOADING THIS GAME.

I've played this game much more than 1.6 hours and have played tons of MMORPGs and large population virtual world games, dating all the way back to my extensive experience with Legend of the Red Dragon, a text and ANSI graphics-based MUD released in 1987. I've also played Classic Ultima Online, Ultima VI Online, and U7O -- 3 fan made MMOs based on U1-4, U6, and U7 respectively, as well as the original Ultima Online. My MMORPGs of choice are Asheron's Call, Anarchy Online, Entropia Universe, Star Wars Galaxies, and Mabinogi. I enjoy large, open worlds, meaningful character builds, well-developed lore with the tools for players to contribute to the lore and story, and sufficient tools to interact adequately with the above. I'm willing to forgive poor performance (to an extent) and have overlooked highly flawed, feature-incomplete MMORPGs as a result of their uniqueness. Basically, SoTA should have at least mostly worked for me. It didn't.

There are a lot of systems in SoTA. However, these systems are less complex and challenging and more obfuscated and pedantic. Making arrows requires multiple skills, even if they are basic arrows. Being self-sufficient even within a very narrow scope requires a large time investment -- a time investment that isn't focused on any sort of meaningful interaction with the world and players but pure grind, If you took UO and distilled it down to it's component pieces, selected only the pieces that made it difficult while leaving out those that made it wholly unique and fun to the present day, and added those features to a hybrid single player/multiplayer/MMO RPG, you have SoTA.

The world itself is largely uninteresting and it's not so much that the worlds of the Ultima series were that interesting -- it's that time has progressed beyond that point. Playing Ultima 4, Ultima 6, Ultima Underworld, and Ultima Online were revolutionary in their respective times because they were essentially unique experiences with very few games out to compete with them. There are at least over 5,000 English-language MMORPGs out there presently that are playable (sure, 90% of those have average popoulations of less than 5, but that's a different story) and tens-of-thousands of roleplaying games to compete with SoTA's experience, many of which have unique worlds, easier to understand mechanics, greater character build customization, etc.

SoTA is somehow both a relic of an older time while also being a grossly unfinished modern experience. Mortal Online felt more like a modern take on the PvP-centric portion of UO than SoTA feels like any sort of modern take on UO. Garriott is not a bad game designer, but as time progresses I'm wondering if he is a relic of a specific period of gaming history that hasn't made a full transition to modern game.

Personally, I'd recommend any of the Ultima fan game MMORPGs, the original UO (play on a shard like Outlands if you want a more unique experience), or even Legend of Aria over SoTA. There are much worse MMORPGs out there, but I can't think of many released MMORPGs that are this combination of extreme disappointment and boring gameplay.

I wasn't an early backer on kickstarter and am playing this for the first time in 2021. 20yr UO veteran... SotA has grown on me and I enjoy it. New yet familiar. Don't see a lot of other players, but those I have gotten to know are more than willing to answer questions or help a new player out. It's not a game of instant gratification... everything takes time... enjoy it.

If you prefer handholding, do not download this game. The tutorials are ok, but after that, you are on your own :P
Graphics are not modern, but cozy, the combat systems are semi-active. Tab targeting, but not the same way as World of Warcraft.
Good enough crafting. Not too advanced but not quite just click and be done.

If you like more advanced MMOs, this can be for you. It is not quite as braindead as most MMOs.

If you really dislike reading text...maybe stay clear, as this game has walls of text, and I mean Great Wall of China amount of text :P

The player immersion is lacking. The first real town you walk into kills it, with player housing having neons, and large orges as a door greeter. The questing has no sense of urgency, like I know what the developer wants me to do, but there is no reason to even do what they want.

The mini map is one of the worst I've ever seen in an mmo. The pooled experience is interesting, but not interesting enough to build a game around. The plus side to the game is there is no npc voice dialogue and I like that. However, speaking to NPC being keyword triggers and getting different answers each time is incredibly frustrating.

I've been playing Ultima Online since 1997 and to this day continue to play and pay for multiple accounts. I know this game isn't intended to be the second coming of UO, but it's not even close to being a stand alone. over all this game is a tragedy and feels unfinished like cleaning urself with bark from a tree. Yea sure it will work, but it hurts.. it's very paintful.

When you play an MMO you expect to put in a large chunk of time, and possibly money into that game. I spent 7 hours in this game and feel like it was 5 hours more than it deserved.

The plus side is the community that plays this game is super helpful, and one of the least toxic communities i've ever witnessed. There is a core group for this game and I'm not apart of that. Which is fine, maybe someone will enjoy this game and give it attention it deserves, but I have a feeling the developers of this game won't meet those attention spans.

No direction of a game with lackluster graphics and no player base. Not much more to say.

I backed this game during Kickstarter with the hopes that this will be the game that I have been longing for. Before there was an actual game, the backers noticed development wasn't going in the direction we had hoped. We voiced our concerns and were, for the most part, ignored. The development went off the rails fast and we were left with this train wreck of a game. We did not get the game we were promised. I backed at the $800 level and I AM SO GLAD i was able to find a buyer for my account prior to the downfall of this game!

Not to mention backers wanted (for many reasons) this game to be Pay to Play, is now a Free To Play. What a slap in the face.

Do not let my low hours fool you, I have played for hundreds of hours before the Steam merge. My 35 hours of Steam play is my many attempts to come back and try to make something of this game I once backed.

'Waste' is the term I would use to define this game.
Because Shroud of the Avatar is an enourmous waste of an enourmous potential. It has in fact mechanics I would love to see in any other MMO and make me wonder why the others didn't think about it.. and just waste them because they get lost in a terrible, overly complex game.

- - The performances are AWFUL. It lags, stutters, take a lot to load zones and possibly, crashes time to time.

- NPC menus are confusing and cramped. When you talk with one, you have a lot of decisions going out of the boundaries of the 'window' and there's a little glitched arrow that allow you to change option.. but god damnit, 2 years of developement where?

- - - WAY TOO COMPLEX. Ok, imagine this: you are an archer in need of arrows and you'd like to make them yourself because of course you do. Does this game allow you to do so? Of course it does!.. if you are willing to buy 3 molds (ingots, arrow head and another I forgot), learn 4 different professions (carpentry, blacksmithing, mining and woodcutting) and ONLY THEN, being able to craft your damn arrows.

Another example I lived personally: now picture you with a broken weapon. You need it to be repaired, right? Because maybe you spent quite a lot on it, is a nice +5 weapon and you want to use it as long as possible.. well let's go to the blacksmith NPC and make him/her repair it!.. NO, BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE EASY! you need a blacksmithing repair kit (in case is a sword, otherwise you need a carpentery one) that's sold only by an NPC spawned in player owned cities, but I anyway wasn't able to find it because the owners has to place them and wasted like 2 hours looking for it. Luckily the community is very friendly and they gave me some.

ANOTHER ONE. I wanted a pet wolf, because is cool and would help me while farming wood.. so I learned alchemy.. big mistake. I need anyway for the collar and the bracelet materials from leatherworking, mining and blacksmithing. j f c

+ You can write books and short stories! And this is a feature I would love to see everywhere, because in MMOs you meet people, do random things and an inventive mind would find a LOT of stories to tell

+ Different parts lead to different results. If you survived enough to be a blacksmith, you may be able to build a weapon with different materials creating different effects, for example the copper increases the crit %, meteoric iron increases the damages and you can build a weapon using different materials for each part. Which is cool, but the crafting is really not.

+ Some spells has a change to consume focus materials. Which is what I miss of WoW, when you had to remember what your spells do and what you need for them to work

Long story short, this game tries to be a mix between Life is Feudal, Albion Online and a normal MMO failing at being any of them, with extremely fine details like the really smooth dodging animations getting lost in a sea of awfulness

I use to play this and I had to give up on it. Community is too small. Major systems are still broke/incomplete. Anything of value done by skeleton is focused on money grabs in the their store. It's a real shame, there was so much promise. And don't let me get started on how much of a pig this game is on machine requirements. You have to lather it up in oil and push it hard down a hill to get it going.

As a fan of the first video game RPG--Ultima series--I can truly say that Shroud of the Avatar is the real spiritual successor of what we have loved for years. A true Role-Playing Game in all sense of it where developing skills is what defines a character.

Other than being an offline game, SotA is also a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game or MMORPG. I wouldn't say that this is the spiritual successor of Ultima Online, SotA as an MMORPG is a game on its own, unique, incorporating what we have learned since the first generation of MMOGs.

If you want to play offline or online, if you want to remember the feeling of playing a genuine video game RPG that was the Ultima series--particularly Ultima IV to Ultima VIII--then Shroud of the Avatar is for you. If you are curious as to what a true Role-Playing Game is then download SotA today. I guarantee your definition of what a true RPG is will be upgraded.

Factually - this product moved from fraudulent rip-off to cruddy purchase via the magic of never releasing a value proposition.

Any challenge or criticism of SOTA on the official forums is met with silence or outright deletion of threads, which speaks VOLUMES.

Portalarium, Richarard Garriot, etc and pretty much every entity involved is complicit in plugging an incomplete, bug-ridden, product as a game.

Do not even bother. This is a non-product.

I'm sure I'll update this later, but decided to throw something up for now. I see a LOT of negativity about this game, and a lot of people bitter over broken promises, so I want to throw out an opinion as someone that never rode that particular hype train. I've never even played an Ultima game.

At first glance SotA lacks polish and seems clunky as hell. Within a few hours of gameplay things start to come into focus, though. The skill/XP system is very well thought out and while it can be confusing at first it does offer the player a lot of customization. Some things aren't as intuitive as they're meant to be, like the way skill cooldown timers work once you start gaining charges to your skills. I'm so used to games using a number to denote charges while using the timer to show single charge time, at first I thought cooldown timers were just broken. Once it clicked I appreciated the simplicity of it.

Combat flows well, but there is no sense of impact. This is very much more of an oldschool RPG than anything, and gameplay reflects that. Even though it's a real time combat system you still feel more like a strategist controlling a turn based character. That isn't to say that combat feels slow. There's plenty to do with many skills only taking a few seconds to recharge and defensive skills giving a front loaded boost to defense for the first couple of seconds on activation. There are AoE attacks to avoid as well. All of the elements of fast paced action combat are there, but actually using the combat system still feels laid back and relaxing. This could be a plus or a minus depending on personal taste. Personally I'm enjoying it.

Equipment decays fairly fast (at least in the beginning), and I find myself often throwing things away rather than repairing them at the early levels. Items take both normal durability loss and permanent durability loss, meaning that eventually everything becomes unusable. There is a way to repair the permanent durability loss, but as of yet I think it requires a fairly expensive reagent to do. Equipment-wise SotA feels similar to Albion Online, leaving me wanting to invest in my character's skills more than gear in the early play.

Tradeskills require a lot of work, with recipes being very detailed for a video game. A loaf of bread has 6 or 7 components.
As a result I've barely touched that side of things. I don't know how I'd do it without somewhere to keep the vast amount of goods needed to keep items flowing. I'm hoping that I have the space to do those things further into my game play. The whole system seems very well made, but early on it's just overwhelming to think of all of the different materials needed to make even a few items.

By default you only have one character slot, and nothing in game or on Steam leads you to believe you can get more. Going to the SotA website, however, will allow you to link your Steam account and purchase not only extra character slots, but also a subscription. The sub looks to be completely optional, with no must-have features. Extra characters have their own inventory and worn items, but share everything else. You can do everything on one character, but if you like having a theme to each of your characters it's nice to have the option.

Overall the game feels very rewarding. I feel very invested in my character. The game presents you with long and short term goals. The biggest downside is probably the time investment needed for those long term goals. In a time when many games sell instant max level services and others have endgames that are reached in a week, SotA very much goes against the grain. The game is a celebration of oldschool RPGs, and carries that torch into the MMO sphere with little regard for the current norms. It's rough around the edges, but it has a certain spark of life that a lot of games these days have lost along the way.

I used to play Ultima Online back in the day and have since compared every MMO to it. And we're talking about a 2D, top-down MMORPG, but despite its graphics, it was extremely in-depth and easy to get lost in. When I learned that Richard Garriott (an idol of mine) had created this one several years ago as a kickstarter and it wasn't getting the lovin' it deserves, I HAD to jump in. I was alarmed to learn it's actually free to download AND free to play. It's a little buggy and could use a bit more attention in terms of development, but for what it lacks in graphic ability, it makes up for in immersion, in my opinion. I've seen crappy reviews and some really judgey walkthrough videos that, in my mind, are just flat-out mean. Clearly they're from different types of gamers. I for one, love the nostalgia. Also, there's player housing and so many player-run communities. I flippin adore this game. More people should play it. If I were a gazillionaire, I'd dump some serious money into it. They need funding, but the game still gets regular updates and the community is still lively. Here's to Lord Brittish and those old-timey gaming feels I've been missing so much. Huzzah! <3

I thought this game would somehow get better in time. My take on the state of this game in 2020:

Don't waste your time. I was a backer and invested about $500 to help bring this piece of garbage to life. I was sucked in by Richard Garriott's lies and bullshit. I had hoped for some of that Ultima and UO nostalgia we all thought we were going to get. If you're hoping for that too, you will leave very disappointed. This game is a bloody mess, with no real point, shitty combat, shit graphics for anything made in the last 20 years, and a ton of bugs even after all these years. It may no longer be listed as an early access game, but it sure the fuck plays like one.

A very disappointing game from Richard Garriott himself.

The animation and combat is scuffed, would prefer tab targeting rather than this free-aim targeting which is rather confusing.

The game offers a lot, and to get to it you'd have to invest plenty of time to reach your goal, although this might appeal to others. Even then, the appeal of the art direction in this game doesn't drive the players to keep on going.

Combat is clunky as hell, much of it automated. It started attacking without any input from me. Very flight-y with long animations and very little control. Dialogue UI is confusing. It's like talking to a AI customer service bot at each encounter. Intro zone isn't clear. Rescued a kid in the first thirty minutes with no clear indication of where to drop them off.

It looks beautiful and the UI is extremely polished. However, the gameplay was just immediately so rough that I uninstalled it. The combat was uninspiring and long with little-to-no user input required, even to initiate attacks.

Shroud of the Avatar is a game I have supported from the beginning of the Kickstarter way way back in 2013. This game not only meets my love for an open world, but has a wonderful community that supports fun game play. The questing and getting into the game is meant to be intellectually challenging and stimulating - which is something I love. If you have questions in the beginning type /U for universe and ask questions for where to go and what to do and people will respond. This game is so worth the time - and being free makes it worth trying out too! Check it out!

This breaks my heart to say: This game is a shell of anything Ultima. And it was built to be the games successor. Clunky Controls, disappointing story line, Cash Hungry... I'm more angry that I dropped so much money to be honest. Limited housing plots, as well, which is frustrating. Because you basically have to pay to own one.

Ultima, one of the first MMORPG's was brilliant. And it still holds today. Shroud? It's like they took those ideas, stripped them down, and sprinkled just a dash into the mix. It leaves you feeling unfulfilled, bored and let down. Gariott was Lord British for hell's sake. He literally played UO with us. It's heart breaking that his Legacy is a dumpster fire.

Pros: An old-fashioned RPG that is beautiful! The crafting, gathering, questing - down to the character progression and skills/classless system.

The Devs update frequently.

It's not always polished and perfect. (What game is?)

Cons: Optimization and high memory usage.

Overall, it has been an amazing ride and I look forward to continuing over the coming months. Playing Shroud since 2014. I only made the minimum pledge of ($45) to join @ the time.

How the mighty have fallen from the days of Ultima Online/Series. Total cash-grab game--if you want anything worth a damn.

I should have known how bad this game was going to turn out (after I helped kickstart it) when they were selling, for like $5000 USD, a SLIDE OF RICHARD GARRIOTS BLOOD. Like, actual human blood on a microscope slide..... How arrogant and full of yourself can you be?

I very rarely make reviews, but this game is a masterpiece!!! If you enjoyed games like Ultima Online or Star Wars Galaxy, you will love this game. Honestly there's nothing like the experience of this.

Pros:
1. Skill progression where you only level what you use - If you cast the same spell over and over, it gets better.
2. 100% Player driven economy. The NPC vendors sell basic gear, materials, tools and such, just like a normal game but all high level stuff has to be found or made. Speaking of making...
3. THE CRAFTING everything can be crafted. EVERYTHING. Go out and gather, chop, and mine all the materials, then come home and build yourself a chest, or a bed, or a magic sword, or a robotic merchant to sell your stuff to other players!
4. The house and decoration system. LITERALLY the best decoration system I've ever used in any game. It's simple and intuitive. You just place items. No mess, no fuss, no nothing. Drag it out of your inventory and stick it on the ground and you can interact with it.
4.b You also have the ability to create your own dungeons and quests for others to explore and play!
5. The actual gameplay. Not only is there a standard combat system like other MMOs but there are two other combat systems to choose from. Each are slightly more complex but once you're used to them they are incredible.
6. The devs are still working on things actively and engaging with the community live and join in social events with the player. Heck, this weekend there's a birthday party for Lord British and the man himself is going to make an appearance and hang out with us lowly peasants.

Cons.
1. There are a few tiny bugs you'll run into but with as active as the devs are in game and on the discord, they get addressed pretty quick.

2. Like I said, the devs are still working on it so there are unfinished areas, but, they're few and far between.

Issued a perm ban for the below comment

This game was just a cash grab from the get go, the dev team that started all this ignored the fan base through the entire EA and on until today, the dev team all just had big heads and big egos, thought they knew it all, so this game crashed and burned, i do not think they learned anything from it, the egos where way to big when i tried to play.

Seriously to perm ban me for posting my opinion proves this dev team still has issues

I was one of the backers after hearing the legendary Richard Gariott wanted to restart an Ultima game. Alas, SotA is nothing remotely related to Ultima. Storyline, if any, is just boring and uninspiring. Combat/game play is again, boring. The whole level up thing just feels like a complete mess. The worst part is, the graphics. Out of nowhere, the game slows to a crawl, and I have pretty good specs (Ryzen 3800X, SSD, 32GB, 2060Super). The game, like many have said, is just not optimised. There's the odd updates but this game fells as though is on a long path towards shutdown. RIP.

If you like MMOs, want a very player based game, and liked UO, this is a great game. It can be a little hard to understand the systems at first, but there are hundreds of players willing and ready to help. As example look up Krohe Doomwalker, or anyone in DoomWander Inc, they are always willing to help

If you sit down and learn the game its pretty sweet, the devs are active they even goto peoples streams and talk and listen to suggestions.. Is somethings broken yes are there somethings that are no brainers and havent been done yes lol... But if they stick to it they have a pretty decent mmo. Its came along way since its launch you just have to give it a real shot!!!

I have had fun playing this game, but I could not recommend that anyone buys it. The game is a ghost town, cities are filled with abandoned player houses and vendors.

I played this game for a bit and had a really hard time finding any merchant i can use that was not owned by a player and would not allow me to interact with it. I found this odd as I probably only saw about 5 players the whole time i played. I think the game is fun but it is empty and you are just left to wonder around once you live the first area.

Backed this game and future episodes at the time on kickstarter seemed great and played it pre steam was poorly optimized and poor gameplay then and now its free to play its still a mess.
On top of that i wrote a honest review in the discussion forums and the devs banned me and there was nothing toxic in my post.

Dont get me wrong,it will be a great game if the devs put more emphasis into the gameplay and content than the housing and selling crown in the cash shop, combat is buggy, desync.lack of content is undeniable.the 77 is a complete joke, one day made dg and more eternal pattern added this pacth is a killer for me.they so much to do with the world, mob, boss, ressource but instead they putting their time in the cash shop.they even ban me from their discord because im saying the true.its a cash sucker game so ill do you a favor writing this...dont touch this game and dont encourage them.the devs team is a complete joke.

Hillariously terrible game.

crashed both times i tried to adjust my video settings.
My character died by just jumping off a log and landing a foot down.
Combat? just play that song from benny hill in your mind evertime you enter combat. It's that bad.

stay away. save your money.

Personally, if not for but the poor optimization this would be a solid game. It is very enjoyable, and I made quite a few really great connections in the game. Great communities and lots of fun, really good times. I just could not deal with the poor frame rates any longer.

There is no reason why a game that has been out for years, still does not prioritize its own performance.

This game has a great community, allows you to explore a large world, while leveling up in whatever skills you choose. The economy and crafting seem very natural as well. I played for many hours before I moved the game into steam, and I've enjoyed it quite a bit.

It's difficult to properly articulate the scope of my disappointment in this game, so I will simply leave it at that:

This game is disappointing.

It looks bad, plays bad, and makes you feel bad to be a part of it.

What more is there to say? Anyone who spent money on this game, myself included, paid for the promise of something better, but we were strung along and repaid with disappointment for every dollar spent.

I kind of like Richard Garriott, and I will always be glad that he gave the world Ultima Online. But he's not the developer he used to be. Like Jon Smedley of SOE infamy, he has some good ideas, but as a project manager, he has a bad habit of running new games into the ground before they really have a chance to get going.

As a new player this was the about the worst experience I've ever had. Quests weren't close to where they said they were. You couldn't carry anything. There is no town near you to even find a bank or merchant. When you go to a town its like just an advertisement for 10000 player NPCs selling stuff you can't afford. Player towns are empty. Everything is instanced. At the bank they want you to spend gold just to open a few slots. Graphically the game looks awful. Items break, its expensive to fix. Then I read about Unity Asset flipping for cash and uninstalled this scam

I'm going to keep playing it because I'm a masochist, but I would definitely not recommend this to anyone for any reason. It's a buggy, poorly optimized, pile of unfinished garbage....but I'm gonna keep playing it....for reasons....

I was pleasantly surprised. So far, the game is enjoyable, and the community has been relatively nice. The game doesn't have your standard polish - it has a very old school feel to it. I love the fact that there are no real set classes, and that you can equip whatever you want. I also like the crafting system thus far.

Set your expectations for this. If you are coming here thinking it will be Witcher 3 style graphics with Sekiro physics and combat you will not be happy. This is not that experience. If you are open to something quite different it can be really great. I am thoroughly enjoying it.

If you played and loved pre-Trammel UO back in the day you will understand this game. There is a virtue system, no classes skill use leveling, taming, deep crafting, plenty of RP capability if that's your thing, interesting and complex combat, magic and tactical trees, tons of quests, languages (OooOooo), a rich, text dialogue system with NPCs, game and player towns, lots of housing customization if you want it, lore-galore, on and on. It's a true sandbox, UO style.

I almost didn't give it a try due to the mixed reviews. But I loved the Ultima Series and UO so I had to do it. Very glad I did.

So I have off and on played this game for a while now. I find myself coming back to it often. I really like how a lot of the stuff works for skills and attacks and such. I would highly recommend this game.

Greatest turd I have ever played. Do not waste your time. I was a Kickstarter backer at Citizen level (about $550 from memory. Yep, I am a moron) based on the fact I was a massive Ultima Online fan and the promises of what the game would ultimately be upon release. It lived up to neither of those expectations. It is an outdated, obtuse, clunky POS. Oh, and it is essentially pay to win.

I backed this game on Kickstarter, hoping to get a worthy entry of the Ultima series, but luckly I sold my pledge as soon as things started to appear sketchy. Plenty of lies, total disrespect of the fanbase and the people who gave money to make this happen and an incredible lack of awareness about how to make a (decent) game in the 2010s. This is the worst entry in the series (even worst that the complete failure that was Ultima IX), and the final proof (after many failed games) that Richard Garriot and his pals can't make a good game after Ultima Online (and that was released in 1997). Stay away from this game, the only reason this is still running is because there are (few) people willing to spend thousands of dollars for in-game objects to decorate their virtual houses placed in desert villages.
