Ein nettes Spiel mit interessanten Spielmachaniken und einem relativ unverbrauchtem Setting.

Nach rudimentärer Charakterkreation werden vier Agenten angeheuert, mit deren Hilfe das namensgebende und zum Spielgewinn führende Sigma-Projekt realisiert werden soll. Genauer: realisiert wird es letztendlich durch anzuheuernde Wissenschaftler, wobei der Begriff anheuern hier die komplette Geheimdienstpalette von bestechen, überzeugen, verführen bis hin zur Entführung umfasst. Je nach Agentenauswahl mit kleinen bis ziemlich großen Erfolgschancen.
Gehackt und überwacht wird auch reichlich, wobei gerade ersteres ein nicht zu unterschätzender Schlüssel zum Erfolg ist.

Die Damen und Herren Wissenschaftlers forschen schliesslich dann je nach individuellen Eigenschaften und Einsatzbereich mehr oder weniger effizient für Euch (sofern sie nicht abgeworben werden oder den Dienst quittieren) und wer die Sigma-Theorie als erster erforscht hat, hat gewonnen. Zumindest wenn die Welt vorher noch nicht untergegangen ist. Muß man nämlich auch drauf aufpassen. Nicht zu forsch forschen und zu expansiv expandieren!

Mächtige Lobbyistengruppen und zwielichtige Geheimorganisationen gibts auch noch -mit oftmals interessanten und spielrelevanten Auswahloptionen - und immer mit nervig nicht wegklickbaren Dialogfenstern.

Das alles wird insgesamt recht statisch, wenn auch nicht unatmosphärisch, präsentiert, ist nach dem nur wenig hilfreichen Tutorial auch nicht sofort in allen Facetten nachvollziehbar, und ist tatsächlich - wie in einigen anderen Rezessionen schon angemerkt - auf die Dauer recht repetetiv, hat mir aber trotzdem bis jetzt knapp 28 Stunden ziemlich viel Spaß gemacht.

Daher Empfehlung für alle verkappten Strippenzieher der großen Weltpolitik, die den Aluhut an der richtigen Stelle und Spaß an rundenbasierter Strategie fernab jeglicher Hektik haben.

Auf Grund der guten Bewertungen gekauft, und ich verstehe sie nicht.
Die Idee ist nicht schlecht, aber man braucht um die 2 Spiele bis man kapiert hat wie das Spiel läuft.
Dann rekrutiert man einfach zwei Hacker, eine(n) Anwerber und einen zur Exfiltration. Das Attribut Stärke hätte man sich schenken können, ist absolut unbrauchbar. Man senkt überall den Sicherheitsstatus auf Null, lässt die Hacker stehlen und Wissenschaftler finden und die Kampfdrohne den Ruf steigern. Binnen ein paar Runden ist man uneinholbar weit vorne. Nicht jedes Indie Spiel ist nur weil es keine schöne Grafik hat automatisch gut, manche wie das sind einfach fad und öde.
Es ist binnen Minuten extrem repetiv, binnen einer Stunde klickt man alle Entscheidungen blind weg weil schon bekannt, und man lässt seine Leute einfach immer und immer das gleiche tun für einen fixen win.
Außerdem bricht die Performance gegen Spielende ein wenn man erstmal fast alle Wissenschaflter hat und noch ein paar wenige exfiltrieren muss.
Verstehe nicht was daran spannend, interessant oder auch nur kurzweilig sein soll. Ständig das gleiche, jede runde die gleichen Anweisungen per klick geben, super. Ungefähr so spannend wie in eine bunte Excel Liste ständig die gleichen Zahlen zu schreiben. Kann es wirklich nicht empfehlen.

Die Mechaniken im Spiel machen anfangs Spaß, werden allerdings sehr schnell repetitiv. Deswegen und weil es schwer ist zu verlieren hat das Spiel einen geringen Wiederspielwert. Außerdem braucht es relativ viele Klicks Aktionen im Userinterface durchzuführen und man bekommt viele unwichtige Informationen angezeigt. Die Idee hat Potential, leider ist die Umsetzung nicht gut durchdacht.

Sigma Theory: Global Cold War



Möge das Wettrennen um die Erforschung der ultimativen Technologie und damit auch der Wettstreit um die Weltherrschaft in diesem rundenbasierten Strategiespiel beginnen.

???? Gameplay

Es gibt bisher eine Kampagne die ein wenig Story bietet. Diese ist aber weder sonderlich spannend noch übermäßig gut präsentiert.

Dadurch steht das Gameplay absolut im Vordergrund. Hier beginnt das Spiel damit, dass man sich zunächst seinen Avatar erstellt. Welche Nationalität hat man, wie heißt man und mit wem ist man verheiratet. Danach werden aus einer Reihe von über 50 Agenten 4 rekrutiert, indem man sie überzeugt. Dazu muss man sich über die Vergangenheit der Agenten informieren und dann abschätzen, mit welcher von 3 möglichen Aussagen man sie am ehesten herum bekommt.

Hat man 4 Leute zusammen geht es direkt los auf die Weltkarte. Hier sieht man die 9 Supermächte die dabei sind, die ultimative Technologie zu erforschen. Das Ziel ist es nun, seine 4 Agenten und die 2 Drohnen (Kampf und Überwachung) einzusetzen um Wissenschaftler in anderen Ländern ausfindig zu machen und entweder davon zu überzeugen als Doppelagenten zu arbeiten oder in das eigene Land zu holen. Sei es durch Entführung, Verführung, Bestechung oder Redegewandtheit. Dabei springt jeder Wissenschaftler auf etwas anderes an und auch die eigenen Agenten sind nicht für jede Maßnahme geeignet.

Dies liegt daran, dass jede Figur verschiedene Eigenschaften hat, wie unbestechlich, verhandlungssicher, charmant und so weiter und bei den Agenten kommen noch die Werte Verstand und Kraft hinzu.

Je nachdem wie man an Informationen und weitere Wissenschaftler gelangt muss man aber immer darauf achten, dass die Alarmstufe in den anderen Ländern nicht zu hoch wird, sonst wird es immer schwerer an Informationen zu gelangen und noch schwerer Wissenschaftler aus dem Land heraus zu bringen. Versucht man dies startet nämlich ein Minispiel in welchem der Agent von einem Punkt zu einem anderen läuft und dabei verschiedene Events auslöst und wenn die Alarmstufe hoch ist auch auf Polizei oder Armee trifft. Möchte man also nicht, dass der eigene Agent gefangen genommen wird und womöglich Infos preisgibt oder dass der Agent sogar getötet wird, sollte man versuchen die Alarmstufe niedrig zu halten.

Neben der Möglichkeit das System des Landes zu hacken (Neben Alarmstufe senken kann man dadurch auch Haftbefehle löschen, Forschungsdaten klauen oder Druck ausüben) gibt es dafür den diplomatischen Weg. Hierzu muss ein Gespräch mit dem jeweiligen Botschafter vereinbart werden. In den Runden bis zum Gespräch kann man Informationen über den Botschafter einholen, was es leichter macht ihn im Gespräch zu überzeugen. Die Diplomatie bietet zudem noch die Möglichkeit Agenten aus der Gefangenschaft zu befreien, Wissenschaftler oder Forschungsergebnisse auszutauschen, sowie das Ansehen beim eigenen Chef zu steigern oder die Beziehungen zwischen den Ländern zu verbessern.

Die letzten beiden Punkte sind wichtig weil beides zu einem Game Over führen kann. Sollte das Vertrauen der eigenen Vorgesetzten nämlich auf 0 sinken, weil man falsche Entscheidungen trifft oder feindliche Agenten die eigenen Wissenschaftler entführen ist das Spiel vorbei. Selbiges gilt für den Fall, dass die Weltuntergangsuhr auf 0 sinkt. Diese tickt runter wenn man falsche Entscheidungen trifft oder die Beziehungen mit einem Land so niedrig werden, dass Krieg geführt wird. Deshalb sollte man immer sehr umsichtig spielen und jede Entscheidung genau überdenken.

Bei all dem sollte man aber nie seine Forschung vernachlässigen, denn das Ziel ist ja die Entdeckung der Sigma Theorie, der ultimativen Technologie. Dazu muss man 15 Forschungspunkte erlangen und dann an den 5 Facetten der Sigma Theorie forschen.

Hat man eine Technologie entdeckt gibt es 3 Forschungspunkte und einige Boni, sofern man sie als Erster erforscht hat. Hat man sie als Erster erforscht und überlässt sie einer Lobby gibt es 2 Punkte und andere Boni. Hat man eine Technologie erforscht und ist nicht der Erste gibt es 1nen Punkt und das weitere Forschen in dem Bereich fällt einfacher. Da es 5 verschiedene Forschungsbereiche gibt muss man sich entscheiden, wo man seinen Schwerpunkt ansetzt um nach Möglichkeit viele Boni zu erhalten. Die Spezialisierung der Wissenschaftler sollte man dabei aber natürlich nicht außer acht lassen.

Sollte man bei der Forschung weit hinterher hinken oder ein anderes Land vor einem die Sigma Theorie erforschen ist das Spiel auch vorbei. Es gibt also viele Möglichkeiten zu verlieren, was das Spiel sehr fordernd macht, selbst wenn man weiß wie der Hase läuft. Eine stete Planung des weiteren Vorgehens sowie umsichtige Entscheidungen und genaue Kenntnisse über das Können der eigenen Leute ist also zwingend erforderlich.

Die Story Sequenzen machen erst einmal nicht viel her. Statische Charaktere und ein paar Textboxen locken heute ja kaum noch jemanden hinter dem Offen hervor. Die Portraits der Agenten sehen dafür Klasse aus. Wirklich jede Figur ist einzigartig in ihrer Erscheinung sowohl die Agenten sowie die Botschafter und Wissenschaftler. Die Weltkarte ist übersichtlich, wie es sich für ein Strategiespiel gehört und das Gleiche gilt für die Menüs.

Zu hören gibt es nicht viel, es sind immer die selben Sounds was auf Dauer leider langweilig wird. Texte sind zudem auch nicht vertont. Man muss also alles selber lesen. Das kann auf Dauer ebenfalls langweilig oder sogar nervig werden, da sich viele Textboxen in jedem Durchlauf widerholen, insbesondere wenn Technologien erforscht wurden.

Wer Strategiespiele mag und damit Leben kann, dass es in diesem Titel etwas gemütlicher zugeht kann hier ruhig zugreifen. Das Spiel ist fordernd aber fair und macht dadurch echt viel Spaß und das obwohl es noch im Early Access ist und somit ja sicherlich noch einiges im Spiel fehlt. Dank Steam-Errungenschaften und dem Freispielen von Agenten bietet das Spiel auch Langzeitmotivation, insbesondere weil jeder Durchlauf etwas anders ist.

Nicht einfach - es dauert etwas, bis man vollkommen durchgeblickt hat. Aber mir gefällt das Spiel sehr gut. Leider ist bei den Aktion-Situationen (Entführung usw.) noch keine deutsche Übersetzung. Ich hoffe, dass dies aber noch kommt. Wer Spionagespiele mag, ist mit diesem Spiel sicherlich gut beraten. Ich hatte einmal einen Abbruch des Spiels - ansonsten lief das Spiel einwandfrei. Viele Entscheidungsmöglichkeiten und Einflussnahmen auf den Spielverlauf, bieten gute Voraussetzungen, eines großartigen Spiels.

In einer Welt, in der die bekannten Bündnisse nichts mehr zählen, weil die Wissenschaft kurz vor dem Durchbruch ist, einen Meilenstein zu entdecken, der es der Nation die ihn
erreicht die Weltherrschaft sichert.
Es zählt also nur noch eins. Mit allen Mitteln diese Technologie zu erforschen.
Der Spieler wird als Leiter des Geheimdienstes dazu beauftragt dies umzusetzen, indem er mit Wissenschaftlern an verschiedenen Projekten forscht, Wissenschaftler anderer
Nationen besticht, verführt oder gar entführt.
Hierfür kann er sich zu Spielbeginn 4 Agenten aussuchen, die verschiedene Fähigkeiten und Attributwerte haben. Die Attribute beschränken sich dabei auf Stärke, man könnte auch
Kampfkraft sagen, und Intelligenz.
Die Fähigkeiten sind deutlich zahlreicher und reichen von Hacking Fähigkeiten bis zur Verführung.
Dabei müssen weiterer Agenten durch das Erfüllen von Meilensteinen im Spiel freigespielt werden. Hat man sie dann erst einmal in der Auswahl, muss man sie noch überzeugen, einem beizutreten.
Dazu muss eine von 3 möglichen Antworten gegeben werden, die auf den Lebenslauf des Agenten passen. Hat man sie dann einmal rekrutiert, stehen sie ab diesem Zeitpunkt
in jedem neuen Spiel direkt zur Verfügung.
Hat man seine Crew zusammen, wird einem von seiner Frau, die man sich ebenfalls aussuchen kann, zur neuen Stelle gratuliert. Anscheinend ist sie auch in der Regierung tätig
und kommt regelmäßig im Spiel mit Bitten zu einem. Einmal will sie sich einen Wissenschaftler oder Agenten ausleihen oder möchte Forschungsergebnisse mit anderen Nationen teilen.
Jetzt fängt das Spiel erst an. Man befindet sich auf einer Weltkarte auf der man seine Agenten sowie eine Kampf- und Spionagedrohne über die Map bewegen kann.
Das Spiel ist rundenbasiert, sodass je nachdem wie weit das Ziel entfernt ist und wie unauffällig gereist werden soll, eine bestimmte Anzahl Runden vergehen muss. Das trifft
selbstverständlich auch für alle anderen Aktionen zu.
Man setzt seine Agenten darauf an Informationen von Diplomaten zu sammeln um diese dann anschließend zu überzeugen die Sicherheitsstufe der Nation zu senken oder eine
bessere Beziehung zur eigenen Nation zu pflegen. Das ist auch wichtig den, wenn Agentenfähigkeiten entdeckt werden, kann es schon mal sein das Krieg erklärt wird, was zu
einem raschen Spielende führen kann.

Man setzt also seine Agenten ein um Wissenschaftler zu finden, zu überzeugen oder zu entführen, um damit die eigene Forschung zu beschleunigen. Leider bekommt man keinerlei
Anzeige, wie die Erfolgsaussichten sind und auch die Verbesserung der Erfolgsaussichten ist kaum gegeben.
Dabei sind Entführungen von Wissenschaftler noch am detailreichsten. Diese gelingt nämlich nur wenn man es mit seinem Agenten fliehen kann was bedeutet das, dass Spiel einem
Situationen vorgibt, in denen man entscheiden muss. So kann man einen Polizisten ggf. umgehen ihn K.O. schlagen oder gleich töten. Meist ergibt sich dies jedoch von selbst
da der jeweilige Agent z.B. mehr Intelligenz besitzt als Stärke und demnach ein Kampf vermieden werden sollte oder weil ein Agent einfach mal selbst entscheidet.
Das ist insbesondere dann ärgerlich, wenn dadurch ein Agent verhaftet wird oder gar stirbt. Zwar bekommt man, je nachdem wie gut die eigene Nation zu einem steht, Ersatz
doch dies kann einige Runden dauern und ein neuer Agent wird vom Spiel vorgegeben.
Schafft der Agent eine perfekte Entführung, nimmt einen dies die andere Nation dennoch über, auch wenn sie selbst zugibt, dass es keine Beweise gibt. Das ist einerseits gut, weil
dadurch verhindert wird das alle Wissenschaftler ständig entführt werden anderseits ist es mehr als ärgerlich, wenn man für eine perfekte Entführung den gleichen Malus
erhält, als wenn man sich mit einer Kampfdrohne den Weg freischießt.
Die Eigenen entführten oder auf irgendeine Art und weise überzeugten Wissenschaftler generieren nun jede Runde Punkte in einem Bereich. So kann man tödliche Kampfroboter,
die Möglichkeit Menschen zu beeinflussen oder eine nahezu endlose Energiequelle erforschen. Leider bringen einige Technologien deutlich bessere Vorteile, was deswegen ein Problem ist, da Wissenschaftler nur in ihrem Fachgebiet wirklich gut sind und die Vorteile nur dann wirklich zum Tragen kommen, wenn man die Nation ist, die
die Technologie entdeckt.
Sollte man es an die Spitze geschafft haben,, wird es richtig anstrengend. Die KI fokussiert sich auf einem und jede Runde kommen mehr feindliche Agenten zu einem.
Diese kann man zwar identifizieren und anschließend vertreiben bzw. verhaften aber dies schafft keine Ruhe. Töten kann man zwar die feindlichen Agenten, aber dies führt wiederum
zu einer schlechten Beziehung zur jeweiligen Nation, dies wiederum zu Krieg und dies zum Spielende.
Demnach kommen die Agenten wieder auf freien Fuß, sodass diese direkt weiter ihrer Arbeit nachgehen, was wiederum dazu führt, dass die eigenen Agenten nur noch mit
Gegenspionagetätigkeiten beschäftigt sind.

Sigma hat mich wirklich einige Stunden wirklich gefesselt, wo ich gar nicht aufhören wollte. Leider wiederholt es sich doch dann recht schnell. Ob eine Aktion gelingt, scheint
mir sehr Random eine Einflussnahme ist selten möglich und frustriert oft. Mi-Clos Studio hat angekündigt, das sie noch weitere Inhalte planen und das ist meiner Meinung auch
notwendig. Das kann und möchte ich also dem Spiel, als Early Access Titel, nicht ankreiden.
Ist Sigma nun also eine Empfehlung oder nicht?!? Wie fast jeder Early Access Titel liegt die Antwort wohl in der Zukunft. Wenn Mi-Clos Studio das umsetzt, was sie versprochen haben,
kann Sigma ein Juwel werden für alle Fans des Genres. Wem aber das Genre nicht gefällt wird wahrscheinlich enttäuscht werden.
Ich für meinen Teil hatte schöne Stunden mit dem Spiel und gebe aus diesem Grund einen Daumen nach oben!

Well here's a fine game that deserves a passing grade. Its not like X-com, Its almost like invisible INC I wanna say it looks and feels like it... But...

There are no special strategic tactical battles or missions.

The game is mainly choice making, judgement, recon, ETC. The game reminded me a bit of another old game, Cardinal of the Kremlin. This is better though. Way better.

In this game you send agents around the world finding info about Technology and be the first to cracking all the big technological secrets. THE BEST WAY IS THE DIRTIEST WAYS. NUFF SAID

i dont know man, its not a bad game. its seriously just RNG the game.

do you find the scientist in that spot? yes or no 50%
do you get past the patrol in the exfil mission? yes or no 50%
does your scientist get converted/abducted? yes or no 50%
do you find dirt on the diplomat? yes or no 50%

theres no real control over anything. yah theres the spy drone that lets you know that theres a patrol coming but 9 times out of 10 the patrol is going to be unavoidable. WHATS EVEN THE POINT OF IT THEN??? then theres the combat drone. all it does is kill a patrol and some civilians ONCE in an exfil. thats the most interaction in the game you have. you can seduce or bribe a scientist to join you based on their personality quirk but you need to role the dice on whether you discover it and then another roll if you manage to succeed.

i bought this game on sale for $3. thats a thumbs up just off that. im not that petty. i hate RNG so this wasnt for me. if you can stomach it, then get it on sale. maybe sub $5. it really just gives the player no real interaction other then GO DO THE THING and then HOPE THE RNG IS IN MY FAVOR. thats boring game design. ive programmed a tick tack toe game with more interaction then this. the devs could have at least put a little more effort into gameplay and not just focus on the art design.

Fun cheap resources management game. After 3-4 games the best courses of action emerge and you end up acing it pretty easily.

Average game is about 2 hours. Really enjoyed my time with it (at least 12 hours were AFK but still)

Don't expect more than 20 hours out of it.

Generally I like a good turned based strategy game, but this one left me cold.

The presentation was dull. Turn based strategy games are hardly the most action packed or exciting games to observe, but this bored me to tears, both visually and content wise. I was fatigued by it all maybe an hour in, but I persevered to see if it got any better. Sadly it didn't. I have up after 2 and a half hours. It's just not that interesting

In concept I think this is a great idea for a game, but the execution isn't up to that lofty idea.

I think if you're better spending your money elsewhere, either on Into The Breach or Plague Inc. Maybe even X-Com. Not this though, I personally found it abysmally dull.

Game is absurdly easy once you figure out that literally nothing matters except extracting scientists of ANY focus to your home base and shoving them in any project. This will always build up enough points to win while crippling everyone else. You can make sure to ensure a win by taking down the 1st or 2nd place country with repeated harassment. That's really all there is to it. They bamboozled me into thinking the game was deeper than it is by making it seem like you have a lot to keep track of. You don't. Too late to refund because I fell asleep after buying it with it running lol.

Pretty good intelligence / spy management title where you try to recruit scientists from other nations to complete certain goals while the cpu AI teams do the same and thus compete with you.

Only drawback is having to in certain minigames micromanage the every action of the spry. For instance he walk to a street corner, then spy ask you if he should run or walk to the next street who different random results partly affected by agents skills but mostly luck/RNG (random number generation) determine success or failure.

Your options are quite limited and the game is kinda random at times. Suddenly the doom tracker will jump forward twice in a row and you've lost. Maybe I just didn't get it, but honestly I didn't really feel like playing it a second time.

Pretty nice game, especially extractions are fun. Still I expected a bit more depth and less chaos. What I don't like is that player is flooded by information at times and is not able to react to particular event. After 5 events happening in one single turn, it is hard to remember all the details and react accordingly.

This game feels artistic. It's not perfect, -- but the way it all pulled itself together towards the end (and yes, there are multiple endings) was very impressive. I really love the characters in this game and the writing has a bleak but compelling personality to it. This game is thought-provoking and meaningful and says a little something about what it is to be human.
I highly recommend this game and I would totally buy a sequel or expansion.

I had a lot of fun with this one but it's barely a recommend. The game is difficult but often for the wrong reasons. You never really get all the information you need. On one hand you could say that's the point, it does fit the story. On the other hand it's still a game and gameplay should take priority and should not be this frustrating.

A digital board game that is far too cumbersome and overly difficult to be enjoyed.

Positive:
- Controlling a shadow government while utilizing assets and technologies is promising, even though it all feels very superficial and disconnected from reality.
- Allocating resources (human and technological) around the world requires planning and forethought, although the processes hardly ever work well.
- The gameplay mechanics are potentially addictive and could create a yearning for progressing through each turn in order to hopefully reach the end goal.

Neutral:
- There is a plot and story (in the story mode), but all aspects of the narrative are bland and uninteresting. The dialogue cutscenes make the exchanges between persons feel like a visual novel.

Negative:
- Actions as a Sigma leader and through agents are unintuitive. There is far too much clicking required to get anything done, but worst of all, any deed ordered to be performed is unclear and vague. The agents' actions seem more like arbitrary initiatives for mechanics that are ambiguous at best and confusing at worst.
- How to accomplish anything in this game is unclear and convoluted. Nothing is straightforward or presented to the player in a manner that is plainly understandable and easy to grasp. There is an abundant lack of upfront information for decisions to be based on. Assessing the possibility of success for each action is really obtuse.
- Much of the game depends on chance and on random elements of events happening in the background, which means regardless of how well one thinks they have strategized, repeated failures are common occurrences.
- Difficulty is relatively high. Losing control of one's operation comes suddenly and quickly. Once one has fallen behind the competition, gaining ground is practically impossible.
- There are social media buttons associated with the developer/publisher throughout the game. The developer/publisher also made the choice to advertise another game in the menu. This spam cannot be removed.
- Crashes happen. When the doomsday clock ended the story mode once, the game became stuck in the score screen. During an exfiltration event, the game became unresponsive once. The only way to fix these crashes was to end the game's process with Windows.

This is a cool concept with an unfortunately poor execution. The veneer of a deep, interesting world seems to be there, but after playing for any amount of time it becomes clear that it's paper thin. For example, the premise of there being world changing tech shows promise, until the game reveals that's only there to drive the gameplay loop of extracting scientists, and the only actual information on the tech is a word salad title and a gameplay boost if you get it first.

This problem of promising more than they could deliver invades every aspect of the game. Another example, when extracting said scientists, you always escape via the same method, running through the streets and dealing with random encounters. While these encounters could have been interesting, in practice the only thing you need to do is click on the thing you are most likely to succeed, and let the game roll the dice. There's no actual decisions to be made other than, do you do the thing that fits the character you have in the field, or do you do the objectively worst decision.

That's not even mentioning so much of the world building is heavily compromised to fit the gameplay. You, as the leader of one the most powerful intelligence agencies in the world, have access to 4 agents (okay, I'll let that one go, they're supposed to be your top agents), and a grand total of 2 drones, each with the engine power of a particularly cheap outboard motor, taking days to fly anywhere.

And I do mean days, because everything happens in discreet days. This of course means nothing takes a reasonable amount of time. Catching a flight from London to Paris? That's gonna take a whole day. Flying your drone with the janky engine takes the same amount of time whether it's from South Korea to Japan, or from China to the US. Because everything is in discreet days, and everything always takes the same amount of days regardless of distance, there's no ability to do any actual reactive actions, and the whole world feels very tiny.

I mean, it would make sense for your agent in the middle of seducing someone in Japan to take a quick hop over the China to handle it, and be back the next day, right? No can do, all flights in the world leave first thing in the morning, and land first thing the next day, no more, no less. Oh and speaking of randomness, that makes up so much of this game. Everything is a roll of the dice, or some kind of random event. It gets really old, really fast.

In fact, just thinking about this game has bored me so much that I just sorta stopped writing near the end, formatted a little so the paragraphs didn't look ugly, and called it a wrap.

tl;dr If you like abstract board games, where the premise of the game has little to no connection to the actual gameplay, but have no friends to play actual board games with, this game is for you.

Sigma Theory could be described as a streamlined grand strategy game with its fair share of unique twists.
Learning about the mechanics of the game is quite fun and I got hooked pretty fast.

Managing your agents, making them seduce/bride/convert or even kidnap a bunch of people is really satisfying.
There's a lot of things under the hood that you'll need a few hours to discover but ultimately, most playthrough will feel the same and lack of real replayability value is a bit of a letdown.

This is not a game for everyone as it's not fast Action enough due to it's mandatory text events nor is it slow enough for Grand Strategy yet it meets a balance between them by offering 4 Agents plus 2 Flying Unmanned Vehicles to assist the Player as they deal some basic negotiations with rival envoys while offering basic decision events and some management of Agents and potential upgrades.

Behind the visuals and text is an unseen Board, Card, and Dice game requiring the Player to figure out which options offer the most efficient path to victory while deciding on the method to gather tech research.

If there is Replay Value beyond the Achievements then it would have to be the personal challenge of completing a session without certain methods and employing lower tier Agents once unlocked for play.

-Neat idea.
-Quite fun for the first 3 hours.

Con:


-Gets repetitive fast. Once you understand the game mechanics, you'll end up doing the same things every game.
-RNG bullshit. A lot of random events that fuck you up without any way to influence it.
-Minor bugs that mess up some events.

Conclusion:


If you have the patience to put up with some of the random BS they hit you with, then get this on a sale or something. Not worth it the whole price, imo.

Set Thoughts


Sigma Theory is pretty engaging rogue like semi cp adv. from indie devs crew. The gameplay is split into a world map where you make strat. decisions about the cold war & tact. sections where you exfiltrate scientists. The tactical segments are either simple & quiet affairs or nail biting diplom. disasters depending on how well you've prepared for them. I've had good & lil wreck time with them. You have to go through a series of events to reach the final goal.

Gameplay


There are few diff. game modes that you can launch. One also lets you to upload own character. On story mode you're appointed as chief of the special Sigma intelligence unit by the gov. of one of the 10 countries. The main goal is to enforce some scientists into the rapid learning of adv. technologies. At the start each of 10 countries has 2 eggheads & each of those can be a specialist only in 1/5 research fields. In order to lead the race, you need to steal those scientists from other countries. It's done by few ways: You can snatch them bribe, seduce or brainwash. At launch you get to pick a team of agents from the list of 58 possible operatives. Team size is 4 & yes, as in some rogue-like games, more operatives unlock to new games as you progress. If you lose agent then there's usually option given to recruit new one so that brings more spice to adv. In Sigma Theory, diplomacy is the key to the player achieving their goals. You'll meet foreign counterparts, which will either set back or further your objectives. This is done through the use of flattery, threats or blackmail.

Semi Conclusion


If you like long session board games, which you can play on your Pc rig, then you might like Sigma Theory. Also to add that If spy action & political gaming are close to your heart then this is a pretty good option. Hope you have enough patience to endure the challenges that are about discovering Sigma Theory secrets. Soundtrack for S.Theory comes from award-winning composer Siddhartha Barnhoorn (Out There, Antichamber, The Stanley Parable). Good Ear Massage I recommend to support Mi-Clos Studio & Goblinz Studio. Buy their games from legit store where devs get the portion from sales. That means in Steam or h.bundle store. H.Bundle is legit from websites that sell gaming keys & that means Devs get their share from sales made on the site.

I recom. to mainly buy from Steam or from sep. website owned by Devs. I guess crew behind S.Theory don't have such website, but here's couple examples where i have account. for $1-$3 i might recommend this game, but for the asking price of $18? absolutely not!

sigma theory is an entertaining text-based resource management game where you sent spies around the world to advance science during a cold war. the game starts off fairly difficult because there are a lot of random events and little explanation about the choices, but once you're familiar with the small number of events and figure out a decent team the game is completely shallow.

the game is pretty fun for the first 2-3hrs until you either see most of the events or develop a winning strategy, then it poses zero challenge. subsequent playthoughs are a joke and there isn't any point to branching out and trying different operators since it's pretty obvious which ones are better than the rest.

the game also has a significant lack of polish, repetitive soundtrack, and cookie-cutter story. i'd recommend it for a buck or two to pass a couple of hours, but for the asking price, you can get something like x-com 2 instead.

This was an odd but enjoyable game. Turn-Based Strategy is accurate, though the same strategy will work almost every time once you learn it. There's a bit of a role-playing aspect to the main story which I enjoyed and a few different endings based off of these choices.

I feel like so much potential went waste in this game.

The concept is great and interesting, the gameplay is somewhat satisfying but the content is so limited. This isn't an SMC type game where you invest 20+ hours for one playthrough, it approximately takes 3-4 hours. If you are not the kind of person who set some challenges like go full pacifist or use agents from a certain country (btw these choices don't affect how the game progress), the game doesn't seem to offer sth new for you to start a new run. The only thing that you can change is your agents and methods but these changes are just for the eye. It is still the same experience.

This game would have been amazing with developed IR, more effective interest groups (World Bank, etc.), more influential and grim choices, and mini-stories for the agents. But in its own shape, Sigma Theory still is a fun game but for a limited time.

I want to like this game and spent a few playthroughs really trying to, but the core issue is that it's just a flat, thin experience with very limited variability.

The biggest issue imo is that all the characters have super detailed backgrounds you can read, hinting at a deeper story, cool character interactions, maybe secret missions etc... but in reality every character is a one-dimensional cardboard cut-out. The British Mi6 guy says the exact same things as the Nigerian woman who grew up on the street. They might as well have named them Agent 1, Agent 2, Agent 3...

That's not even to mention that most of the game is played by choosing text bubble responses to problems, with completely random effects. Choosing agents based on skills seemingly has little effect, as sometimes you'll just get messages saying you lost a scientist or an agent and there was nothing you could do because all the options to choose were the wrong option. It's a bit sad, because there's hints of a great game in here.

Just don't buy the game.

If you are looking for a strategy spy game, just don't try this one for a simple reason: the devs screwed their rules.

Things doesn't work as the devs write they should. In the end, you just find out through a system of trial and error that has nothing to do with strategy.

It is clear that the devs rushed the programing leaving behind events that make no sense to be suffered by you no matter how well prepared you are.

As the game betrays its own rules, it is not worthy being bought.

Just don't buy it.

This is a game where you decide on which RNG gambles to take at a given time, hit end turn, and see how they resolve. This could be interesting if you even remotely knew the odds you were betting on.

Do you abduct a scientist now or try to convert them? You have an agent who is good at converting people who you could bring in. The scientist is weak to being seduced, maybe that's the best option. You know how long each option will take but never the chances of success, with or without modifiers. This information is critical for picking a tactical option, deciding to be quick and risky or slow and safe - without it you're just guessing and hoping for the best. Not terribly satisfying.

And it's intentionally designed this way! How well negotiations are going is mapped to a blue and red bar. Hacking gives one to three +'s to indicate odds. What percentages do those +'s actually mean? How blue does the negotiation bar have to be to make a big ask worth proposing? Every piece of information needed to make a meaningful choice is deliberately hidden - and making these choices *is* the game-play in Sigma Theory.

Rolling the dice can be pretty fun. Rolling invisible dice: not so much.

Sigma Theory is a turn-based grand strategy game set in a near-future dystopic-cyberpunk setting, where you manage a spy and research agency trying to achieve the singularity. If that sounds like a lot, it's actually fairly simple. You just send your agents around to talk to and/or kidnap scientists, play some diplomatic games, and handle a fairly basic research tree. There aren't actually a ton of different options; it's more about what to do when, and how to be proactive with what you have.

The main strength of the game is in its vision, as it adheres to a strong core design aesthetic and theme throughout, so you always feel like your in a sci-fi spy thriller. The graphics feel reminiscent of something like DEFCON spruced up, with some very well done character portraits thrown in. The color design sticks strongly to this design ethos, with a lot of orange/blue color contrasting to give that kind of visually poppy tension feel. The music always feels in place and evocative of the setting and constant tension, though it's a bit threadbare in terms of quantity. Of course the most important things, the dialogue and plot, feel very evocative of of the genre they're playing in as well, with scheming NGOs, characters straight out of whatever spy fiction you enjoy, and, most importantly, continuous commentary on the impact of technology on society. We are rapidly approaching the singularity, after all. The main running theme is one of upheaval.

If I have one major criticism of the game, it's that it feels rather obtuse at times. While it does have tutorial dialogue in the beginning that explains a reasonable amount, there's still a lot that is left unclear and is never really told to the player until they stumble upon it themselves. A lot of the description for things that should be given mechanically explicit explanations rely solely on flavor in a way that, while fun, makes things feel imprecise, and sometimes there's no indication of how something works at all until you test it yourself multiple times. This leads to a lot of trial and error and general confusion about how things are run until you've played for a good while. This amounts to perhaps the first several hours, or two or three playthroughs, feeling a bit more frustrating than is warranted. Thankfully you can play through a campaign in only a few hours.

Conversely, while the first few games can feel frustrating, I like how the game encourages replayability in an organic way, as you can unlock new characters for future play throughs by doing things in your game. This allows you try out new agent combinations. Since agents are the most important characters in the game, and also the most detailed, interesting, and varied, it is nice to try out new people and explore the many personalities of the world.

All in all I think Sigma Theory is a decent game with a great concept, that falls short in the actual game part at times. It's not a stellar example of the grand strategy genre. But it is fun, and it is worth trying out, and while the game can get a bit repetitive eventually, overall the experience does get better over time as you learn more. For this I think it's worthy of a recommendation.

I got this off of Humble Bundle and really was interested in it. Do note that I have a couple hours of offline play, so I played closer to 5 or 6 hours into the game.

It starts out really excellent. Each character has an interesting background and sounds pretty unique. As you start off in the game, it really feels like a detailed spy game.

Unfortunately, it won't take long for you to realize that the game is quite simplistic. There's no complex teamwork objectives (although you do need agents to help each other out) and you will start to see the patterns needed for victory without much effort. The diplomacy appears to be intricate but you will quickly find out how to manipulate others easily. There just isn't much to any of the elements in the game.

Overall, I really want to like this game. However, there's just not enough substance, or challenge, here to really suck you in.

Sigma Theory feels like a half-baked boardgame that was never playtested, comes with a quick-start guide by no rulebook, and doesn't particularly make sense. I really wanted to like this game - I love both espionage and strategy games, so I thought I would - but Sigma Theory is sadly pretty terrible.

Unique and atmospheric game but something is missing. Good story, graphics and track for a digital boardgame but not enough for an old fashioned strategy game. I think somehow it's too predictable and unpredictable in one. Like a fortune based boardgame with random annoying events. Fun in the beginning but irritating in the middle.

Oh i almost forgot the infuriatingly missing tooltips.

A very interesting turn-based strategy game, but the strategy is quite monotonous. Once you've understood all the routines, you should be able to win any match in the same way.

Recommended line-up: Two hackers stay in your own country for remote operations, while a seducer and a commando staying in a rival country.

Once the game starts, send your seducer and commando to Russia immediately, to smuggle the genius Russian scientist to your own country. Then focus on suppressing your biggest rival. When a country is eliminated from the race, rush there to transport the scientists back to your country ASAP. Keep doing this and hopefully the victory is yours.

Although the developers have designed a lot of hidden spies, whom you need to play many new games to unlock, but this does not do too much help in prolonging your game time, because as I said in the beginning, the strategy is monotonous.

It is recommended that you buy this game with a discount, which can provide you with 10-20 hours of fun, after that you may start to feel bored.

Original: The game felt like it really lacked explanation for how to play. I found myself quickly with no scientists and almost no agents, upon which I was fired and the game was over. The initial title screen also jumps around considerably as the mouse cursor moves over the different options.

Will probably give it another chance...some day. However I can't recommend it currently as there just isn't any desirability to be found so far.

Edit: Gave the game another go, and experienced similar disappointment. Was given a HEAVY penalty at one point that set me back considerably, on top of losing scientists left and right. The game also bugged out at the loss screen so I had to kill the game. Really displeased with the game so far, after enjoying previous titles by this company.

Final Edit/Review: The game is not worth playing as it is. The campaign is incredibly one-sided, so that as soon as you start doing well it immediately begins heavily punishing you. Either all my agents get locked up, all my scientists leave, or the enemy nations suddenly start SKYROCKETING in their research. The story is also incredibly stale and repetitive, and you only ever get to start as one nation (USA). Honestly, after playing previous titles by this company, I am incredibly disappointed in what I thought would be a very enjoyable game.

I got this in a Humble Bundle. Interesting premise --- you are a director of an intelligence agency attempting to acquire or develop human assets in the pursuit of world-changing technologies.

However, the game is buggy. I've seen a typo. And the rules are a bit obtuse. My main peeve is that the damn thing seized up on my and I lost my game. After that, I can't be bothered to play it again.

Make of that what you will.

A neat board-like game, with polished and pleasant UX, UIs and simple but well made visuals. Manage a network of world-wide-reaching spies, steal scientists from the other countries, achieve results before they do.
Quite a few option on how to approach things, a pleasant way to interacting with the world map and take decisions. The extractions are at time a bit unpredictable but fun too. It's not the type of day I really do play these days, but it's well made and solid, so if you're into digital boardgames, i certainly recommend it with a 70/100. PS full price it's a touch too expensive IMO though

The game is not bad but it's not for me - there are a lot of options in how to approach the gameplay but the game itself is a bit of a black box. It's hard to understand how relevant your choices are and how to play well. I suppose it would take a few games to get into it but it just does not get me invested.

It's not a bad game but it's not for me so I would not recommend it.

Interesting concept executed poorly. This feels like a flash game from the newgrounds era. It's point and click with minimal visuals. It's not worth any money at all so I'm glad I got it through the humble bundle instead of paying $18 for it (the current price).

The beginning of the game is slow. You have to move your agents around and be more careful than you should have to because the RNG in this game is ridiculous. Later in the game events happen quicker and become more varied, but somehow it's still boring. I'd equate this game to shuffling board game pieces around a map and every minute tossing a coin to see if you lose. If you make it 15 minutes you win. Sound fun? No. Neither is this game.

Presentation is slick, premise is interesting and the first 1-2 hours are compelling. Once you suss out the systems, the game falls apart quickly. There's little to no depth here, and the game becomes a cakewalk at any difficulty once you realize how barebones the underlying systems are.

I wanted to like this - besides Phantom Doctrine there's been a spy game drought in recent years. But there's no gameplay or replay value after you scratch the surface here.

The concept is great, the artwork is beautiful, the spy descriptions are detailed, the research upgrades are interesting... The game itself is incredibly repetitive and boring. There seems to be little to no variance on different playthroughs, the language is repetitive, the RNG is frustrating, and some of the game mechanics are confusing. I would enjoy this game a lot more if it was a board game where I could see the dice rolls and make up my own narratives. I may dip into this game now and then because I want so badly to enjoy it, but I do not recommend buying it.

VERY frustrating. I wanted this to be a fun game, but it just keeps beating you down with lousy outcomes. You aren't winning or losing because of your choices and strategy, but because there are just SO many Wammies in the rng table.
To make matters worst, the interface often hides away the most important thing you need to reference. For example,
I've played for several hours, and I still don't know what the flight days are between cities. It could be manageable, but the timing of events and missions often depends on getting the drones between cities with no time to spare.
At the end of the day, I can't justify spending my very precious time on such an arbitrary design.

Sigma theory is a good game, in spite of some early frustration at how some game mechanics aren't explained well. Each campaign is pretty short, but you do learn what not to do, and what has an impact on the game from them. I played, and quickly lost, a few of the classic modes and then tried the story mode.

I was much more engaged in the story mode as it felt like I was an intelligence commander, facing a real threat and there was a sliver of a reason to the whole Sigma McGuffin. It's unfortunate that there is only one story available.

At its core, you have to develop world-changing tech, keep on good terms with other nations, and your own country's handlers, while avoiding complete global annihilation.

There are a lot of great ideas in here, even if most don't fully realise their potential. You can investigate diplomats and uncover their personalities, from formal to craven to paranoid, that give you a good steer for your negotiations. You can even dig up dirt on them and find they're anything from an alcoholic to an adulterer to an embezzler to a sex cultist. Makes you think those embassy parties must really be something. You can compile a dossier on them about these dirty deeds and improve your negotiating power. Unfortunately, after that, the diplomacy is paper thin. You install ransomware or fly a drone over their country and increase relations by removing it. You can do that over and over.

It's at its most spy-movie feel when you steal, or exfiltrate, other countries scientists through seduction, bribery or persuasion. It's done through a series of turns where you are given options to direct your operative and you'll quickly learn you need to play to their strengths or you'll cause chaos and lose diplomacy standing, or worse, your agent. You also lose scientists when other countries get a scientist-stealing tech or send an agent to seduce, bribe or persuade yours to go.

Every turn presents some kind of choice or consequence which can be a small benefit or a major setback. There are terrorists, corporations, criminals and even the .0001% of the elite requiring you to work with/for them or they'll screw you over. You also have a spouse who will make demands, both personal and professional, with benefits and consequences. It's a shame that the game moves at such a pace that you can finish it before completing many of these story arcs.

You start off with a handful of agents to recruit and you unlock more as you play. There is a satisfaction when you see the popup saying you've unlocked agent X. A lot of them are complete rubbish, but there are good ones. I unlocked a dog/scientist hybrid who is an expert knife fighter, and seduced and exfiltrated multiple scientists from my Japanese rival. He also said woof after every dialogue.

Sigma theory feels very much like a familiar and fun board game. Lots of cards in the chance pile to keep each game interesting, but not enough depth to really make a profound difference. I'll return to it whenever I want that short blast of spying / hacking / smiling diplomacy with a dagger held behind the back, and have a good time.

Recommended for fans of management and spy games who don't mind a budget title. What is there is fairly polished, but it is more what is lacking that you notice after a couple playthroughs.

Sigma Theory is all about stealing the scientists, it's like hungry hungry hippos but instead of food sphere's it's scientists.

The fun part of the game is the spy thriller narrative which is generated by some random elements combined with your choices.

The writing can be a little iffy but if you fill in the blanks with your imagination then the game can become something pretty special.

Sigma Theory is a worthy missed opportunity in the long quest for someone to make a truly great spy game. Willing to jump off the paved highways of game design and scurry down a dirt road toward something new, there are bumps along the way. Clever twists on agent recruitment and world design stand out most alongside what is a digital board game in all but name. It won't steal too much of your time and, though the gameplay is oft unexplained, still accessible.

The problem with Sigma Theory is that its pacey, emergent gameplay doesn't work well with its setting and world-building. Most of the storylines the game alludes to telling about agents and betrayals in my playthroughs have been aborted by the speed of the evolving emergent gameplay outcomes. This seems to be a design decision in that the gameplay itself is not deep enough to sustain a slow boil spy noir. Which is a pity because the devs have put forward an infrastructure of factions and agent personalities that could yield a much more rewarding narrative experience.

I'm not sure the dichotomy between gameplay depth and world depth is resolvable unfortunately, which means Sigma Theory is merely an intriguing play that involves low time investment, rather than the quintessential spy game that is missing from the gaming cannon.

Sigma is a very unique management game where you move your agents around to complete tasks that furthers your nation's scientific advancement, think of it like Civilization's Espionage system but much much more detailed. Definitely worth the try.

This game allows you to run an intelligence organization with a focus on containing and running counter-proliferation operations surrounding various technologies. The characters have different strengths and weaknesses, and you can dispatch them to a target country accordingly. The goal is to use real-world MICE coercion tactics against the scientists in each country to recruit and, ultimately, exfiltrate them. You can bribe them, appeal to ideology, abduct them, or seduce them.

Although it is not the deepest gameplay you'll ever find, it scratches a very specific itch for those looking to run HUMINT operations and turn agents.

10/10 for spies

Very cool game! I really enjoyed the take on espionage and counterintelligence. That being said, the game could use a lot of polish. No save feature (wtf?) and mod support needs to be expanded beyond what it currently is. It is extremely limited.

I'm giving this a hesitant thumbs up. It's a well made game, with enough depth for replayability, but...

This game can be ridiculously easy, or ridiculously hard... for one reason alone. It seems that RNG plays a huge role in the success of your operations. I've had runs of this game where an inexperienced agent pulled off some insane operations, which they theoretically shouldn't have been able to do. I've also had runs where every single thing that could possibly stand in my way happens, even though my agents are skilled, and have beneficial traits.

Half the time I feel as though the game is playing me, and I'm merely watching things unfold without any real power to change any of it. Sometimes that means I lose in really stupid ways. But for some reason, the game keeps dragging me back.

If a game can kick me this much while I'm down, and still make me want to keep playing, it's got something going for it... I guess? Only advice I'd give is that this game is not for the easily frustrated; sometimes, the game will just decide you lose, and there isn't much (if anything) you can do about it. But the games where it doesn't are quite something!

Did 3 playthroughs for each game type: classic, custom, and story. Just about 5 hours each roughly. Slayed the custom mode due to my custom agent (Claire Redfield from RE2) with overpowered skills and enjoyed the hell out of it. Ending wasn't 100% what I expected but I am not sure if there are other endings maybe? Hate to go through all that backstabbing and killing to finally grow a heart in the end for some odd reason? Keep the bloodshed going instead :D

Laying the groundwork



Sigma Theory takes place not too far in the future where people have augmentations, impeccable style, and takes headshots like they want to be in the next Bladerunner. The titular “Sigma Theory” of the game is a new kind of science on the verge of discovery that makes things like teleportation or immortality possible. This of course touches on the sci-fi fear and ethics that should feel cozy to Black Mirror or Deus Ex fans.

Of course, this would cause all kinds of political turmoil and as the director of Sigma for your country you will send out agents to steal scientists or get dirt on diplomatic leaders, try to wrestle with politics face to face or under the table, negotiate with terrorists and influence groups, and so on, all while the Doomsday Clock ticks back and forth depending on choices and actions you take. Victory requires loads of scientists and getting them is only possible with 4 agents, 2 drones, and lots of luck.

There are 2 main pieces of turn-based gameplay to Sigma Theory: the global map portion and the exfiltration missions, and this boils down to a lot of reading through traits and dialogue. On the global map players assign scientists to research different branches of science, handle random encounters like enemy spies or betrayals, meet with diplomats to try to raise diplomacy or get extra research points, and assign agents to different countries to find scientists in preparation for exfiltration. Turns are counted as days and things like hacking or finding weapons will require a certain number of days depending on stats. Once scientists are found they have to be recruited 1 of 4 ways: seduction, bribery, conversion, or the least advisable option of straight up kidnapping.

The exfiltration missions play like a Choose Your Own Adventure games with trait and stats checks. Maybe you send an agent that is good with vehicles and RNG presents you with a random encounter that allows you to commandeer a car . Or, RNG decides to give you multiple cops and soldiers blocking your path and your agent refuses to hurt anyone. Drones can help a bit as well: a tactical drone can sometimes let agents bypass confrontations peacefully, a military drone can launch missiles that will deal with the enemies but also any nearby civilian thus leading to some awkward apologies next tea time.

The main action required by players is reading and trying to find the best fit for different people. For example agents have 2 stats, strength and Intelligence, but the agents’ traits are what require more thorough investigation as they can impact agents negatively or positively. For instance, even an agent with low strength and mild intelligence can be useful for converting a scientist into a double agent if they have the Seducer trait.

However a trait like Bloodthirsty means that your exfiltration with them will always include killing enemy soldiers or even civilians. Browsing through traits extends to scientists and diplomats as well. Scientists and agents can gain new traits based on Sigma research, helping certain groups, or even failing at certain events like not allowing an agent to see a contact they have fallen in love with.

The 3 modes available are Custom, Story, and Classic. Classic mode lets you choose any nation, each of which has their own special traits, story mode adds extra missions and dialogue but is locked to the US, and custom mode disables achievements but allows the player to customize a number of different things like research speed or the Doomsday Clock.

Coming in from the Cold



The base game itself isn’t perfect. Muddled, clumsy, these are the last words you would want to describe such a stylish looking bit of espionage thriller and strategy. Some parts of the game could just be made more intuitive: there are often events that grant upgrades to agents or scientists of your choice, but sometimes the traits you are giving aren’t detailed or the character traits already possessed aren’t shown. Had I known this scientist was a Charlatan, I wouldn’t have wasted a perk that made him so evasive. Sometimes RNG and skill checks also feel imbalanced: there is a common scenario where your agent will approach an area full of security cams where he can avoid them or hack them, but both of these require high intelligence, or the Hacker trait will help with the cameras. Eitherway, muscle does no good. That ultimately is the biggest fault of Sigma Theory: you should play as quiet as possible with little gunning, explosions, gadgets etc. Why offer drone strikes or mech-suit soldiers when using them severely punishes the player?

Verdict



Sigma Theory, much like the games that inspire it like XCOM, is all about the little moments. Using blackmail to steal top scientists, having a weak agent successfully survive a string of disasters during exfiltration, or even causing the end of the world because you fumbled a hack that triggered the next world war. When the game works, it really shines: at around 2 hours a session no loss feels big but the wins feel satisfying.

I can't, in good conscience, recommend this game when so many of the mechanics feel broken. The game crashes when I use a drone strike on exfiltration or have my Pacifist agent *somehow* kill an enemy soldier.

Deceptively interesting at first.... until you play for a few hours and realize that you're just repeating the same few moves over and over and over. A light snack of a game, and a rather bland one at that. It's built around an intriguing premise: some new breakthrough called Sigma will transform humanity in a matter of days, so all the Great Powers are scrambling to get to the goal first. The game doesn't really do much with this story, unfortunately. You get a related cutscene ending depending on how you did, and its related to the backstory, but it's brief and doesn't connect to the story you've created with your play in the way games like the Fallout series do. Same deal with the characters. You have a spouse, and your agents have personalities, but these are good for a few random events rather than interesting side plots. A huge amount of wasted potential here.

Gameplay is somewhat engaging, but too dependent on early game luck. You pick agents, pick missions for them, and assign supporting assets (the odds of success or failure aren't clearly explained in-game). You also get special extraction missions, which give you multiple choose-your-own-adventure-style choices. There's a bare-bones tech tree. The problem is that, while your play style can improve with practice, it won't make a whole lot of difference either way if the first missions go strongly for or against you. If they go for you, you turn into an unstoppable 800-pound gorilla who is guaranteed to win with a minimal level of skill. If they go against, you're down in the dung pit and can't crawl out. Play time is also a factor; there's room for both more plot and more gameplay, if the devs had drawn out the promise and pitfalls of the in-game tech.

TL;DR: a solid phone game that could have been a lot more.

Very interesting idea that is nicely excecuted too!

The main premise is that a new form of science has been discovered, Sigma Theory. This science will allow for insanly fast progress into technology that we currently think of as science fiction. We're talking about literal mind control or teleportation. If you country were to fall behind on these advances, you would not stand a chance if a war broke at. Therefore it is your job as Director of your countries Sigma Division to get the best team of scientists while also making sure other countries do not catch up to your progress.

It's a really interesting game that makes you think about how the world would react if some of these technologies were suddenly discovered. Highly recommended!

This game has some interesting concept, but the gameplay is okay at best, most of the scenario are luck-based and random, the diplomacy system doesn't really work. You can seriously dig yourself into a hole if you choose the wrong agent for the wrong assignment, and even if you have a couple of elite agents, these agents can still be easily eliminated by enemy goons (not very elite to me). The late game can get very tedious, just waiting for the research to end.
It's not worth on full-price, wait to get at a discount if you like a semi-good espionage simulator.
