I recently revisited this game for the first time in a couple years as I still have a few good memories of it. I remember the level quality being inconsistent, but I finally decided to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

This game's level quality spread goes (in my opinion, from Windy Hill 1 to Lava Mountain 4 in order):
Great
Ok
Good
Ok
Great
Great
Bad
Bad
Great
Horrifically Gimmicky (You roll apples into fans)
Best level in the game (Great)
Bad
Great
Horrifically Gimmicky (You control a snowball, and it feels terrible)
Horrifically Gimmicky (Pinball but it feels terrible to play)
Ok
Good
Bad
Bad
Bad
Ok
Horrifically Gimmicky (Dreadfully slow auto scroller with terrible controls)
Bad
Bad
Bad
Great
Good
Good

7 Greats
4 Goods
4 Oks
9 Bads
4 Horrifically Gimmicky

11/28 of the game's levels are actually quite enjoyable, but because they "experimented" by making countless gimmicky and/or bad levels I cannot say this game is good with a straight face. It's such a shame too, as there's clearly a foundation for a great game here.
I'd only recommend this game for the extremely curious Sonic fan who's never experienced it.

I’m gonna want to take a long shower by the time we’re done.

Sonic Lost World is a 2D-3D platformer, released for Nintendo’s 8th gen consoles. The PC release is a port of the Wii U version with minor changes to UI and removed Nintendo-specific features.

The game ran without issues on my Ryzen 5 3600, RTX 3060, 16GB RAM system, at 1080p@60fps in Fullscreen mode. Graphics options are limited to resolution and toggling depth-of-field, shadows and grass.

We have a mutual problem, one so large that it will take both of us to overcome it.

In a high-speed pursuit going after Dr. Eggman, Sonic and Tails discover a phenomenon, known as the “Lost Hex,” and decide to explore this mysterious world.

This leads to the discovery of the Deadly Six, who are under the mad genius’ control. After Sonic knocks the only thing keeping them in check, the Deadly Six rise to take control over Eggman’s robots and turn them against him!

With no choice but to form a temporary alliance, Eggman, Sonic and Tails must find a way to stop the Deadly Six before something terrible happens!

Generally speaking, the plot can be described as loosely connecting several events together, and while one moment can be quite powerful, the impact of it is undermined by the next scene.

The Deadly Six on their own suffer from lack of character depth, let alone development, due to the narratives' short length. Instead, they feel lazily written with not much thought given to them, beyond just being Eggman wannabes, and their eye-rolling attempts at humour further diminished my interest for them.

Not all is bad however, the cutscenes between Sonic, Tails and Eggman can be quite amusing to watch and the delivery of lines are pretty good. Alas, it holds little weight when the story barely holds itself together.

All in all, the story took around 7 hours to complete.

Presentation

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2752279984
The levels themselves are made up of a tubular-like blocky design, and this becomes a repeated theme that quickly overstays its welcome throughout the game.

Acts are weirdly titled Zones… So as to reduce confusion, I'll just be referring to the different areas of the game as, well, areas… At least the simple colour palette lets things pop and stand out better, giving each new place its own identity.

The UI annoyingly only appears for a brief moment when called upon, making it difficult to track the amount of time you have left in a stage. This leads me to go against my better judgement of taking too long to explore an area.

The character models are a slight upgrade from Sonic Generations and generally look great; however, the same cannot be said for the majority of the Deadly Six, whose designs are completely forgettable, and arguably don’t look like they belong in the game.

Animation quality is also hit or miss - some scenes could have spent extra time ironing out some lazy posing, and most egregiously, getting rid of Tails’ eyelids being used as eyebrows...

Additionally, the pre-rendered cutscenes weren’t scaled up for 1080p displays, so enjoy jagged 720p muddy videos.

As for the soundtrack, It takes on a Disney-like whimsical vibe. However, nothing stuck out as memorable to me, and some music pieces were quite repetitive. A very safe soundtrack, hardly offensive but also forgettable.

Gameplay

Sonic in this game has a discrete “run” ability, where in past games, he runs by gradually picking up speed. When not in use, he will simply walk at a sluggish pace, with no momentum build-up at all, and makes running up and down slopes woefully unsatisfying. 2D sections are also made awkward by the movement - you can turn on a dime and keep all of your speed on the opposite heading, even when moving at full blast.

He does have access to the spin-dash, bringing him to his top speed from a standstill, as well as the Super Peel-Out - which, unfortunately, is nearly useless due to the level design and pacing.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2753580942

Sonic can also run up and alongside walls and keep himself glued to them with enough momentum. Jumping from wall to wall keeps his speed up, allowing him to cover more distance before letting go. More likely, this ability simply doesn’t work as desired, either by not registering input, or by enabling itself whenever the blue hedgehog approaches any small ledge while running.

The Homing Attack now works by locking onto multiple enemies and destroying them in one attack move, but not only does this ruin the pacing, it also plainly misbehaves. You're likely to miss or otherwise compromise yourself by trying to strike like this, which isn't helped by some enemies outright shrugging off the homing attack. Sonic also has a kick move for those situations... which is just as fiddly and inconsistent.

Just to pour salt on the wound, homing targets can be stacked to deal much increased damage onto a single enemy. And even THAT doesn't click half the time!

Wisps capsules can be found mid-stage. Once collected, Sonic can activate the power at his command. A large portion of the Wisps abilities feel very experimental at best - none were especially good to use, and a fair chunk were too unwieldy or weak to be effective.

Containers can be found throughout stages where Sonic can free the little animals inside and add them to his headcount of total rescued. The final stage of an area requires a certain amount in order to progress, which leads to backtracking a couple times if you didn’t meet the required amount. Destroying badniks also frees up the captive critters inside them, encouraging you to destroy as many as possible with the rubbish Homing Attack.

As for the bosses, once you figure out the attack patterns, they’re a snoozefest with how easily they can be defeated. The real boss fights are Sonic's own disorientating physics and the surrounding environment, more than anything. Late-game levels especially get rather infuriating with the new physics.
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2753589109

Replayability

Ranks are unlocked in a separate Time Attack mode after beating the stage normally. The rank is rewarded based on how fast you completed the stage, ignoring all rings and obstacles in the process as these are not counted to your final score. You can compare your times with your friends or globally through an in-game leaderboard.

Up to five red rings can be found hidden throughout stages. Collecting every one in an area will unlock a chaos emerald. Getting all seven chaos emeralds will unlock Super Sonic and the ability to play as him in any stage.

Achievements are locked behind Omochao. Speaking to him grants you up to three challenges at a time to undertake. It seems weird to have achievements tied to doing arbitrary things like grabbing ledges or spin dashing a certain amount of times and yet, even though I probably fulfilled most achievements' descriptions, it didn’t count because Omochao hadn’t instructed me to do it yet. Along with completing the tasks, he gives you an item box you can utilise mid-stage, but rarely are these even worthwhile.

Final Verdict

Sonic Lost World isn’t just underwhelming. It’s a bad game. The narrative, the gameplay and even the presentation to an extent, need a serious overhaul. Honestly, not even worth looking at.

Sonic Lost World is well, like your average Super Mario Galaxy game, except that it features Sonic and it's different. What this game is going to offer you is actually pretty good, because you get introduced to new characters, zones that have good design, the wisps from Sonic Colors and you also get to team up with Dr. Eggman later in the game. What will really ruin it though is that the controls are messed up, not to mention that you have to press a key in order to make Sonic go faster. The whole story in the game does not make sense from time to time and the game feels slow after a while. Oh, and what about the achievements? Well, they are literally a pain because it takes too long to get them and also because some of the achievements repeat, with little modification to them. Overall, this game is okay and that is pretty much about it. Oh, right. You also get a DLC for free when you buy this game.

Solid game that provides tons of enjoyment. The OST for levels is some of the best in all of Sonic games. Also, the parkour mechanic makes the gameplay super enjoyable. I do have some nitpicks regarding presentation (e.g. the Zeti, the story, etc), but this gameplay is extremely solid putting all that aside.

TLDR; this game is mediocre.

The game doesn't really know if it wants to be classic sonic in 3D, or Mario Galaxy, or a more traditional Mario game.

To start with, Sonic's moveset implies the classic design with the spindash returning, but it has some problems. First, there is a run button. There is no momentum, speed is a binary state. This is detrimental to speed based design. Second the homing attack returns and, as usual, stops you dead upon contact with your target. There is also a kick move which is very similar to the homing attack. It's rather pointless on it's own, but some enemies can only be killed with the kick, while others can only be killed with the homing attack. Some can be killed with both, and there is absolutely nothing to signify which is which except trial and error. The spindash is very situational in this game, and it arbitrarily points in the opposite direction than it goes. Sonic has a parkour move that lets him run on walls, which sounds fun, but it's weird to control, and honestly just isn't fun. It wants to emulate classic sonic in it's feel, but classic sonic was built on momentum.

The art style also wants to emulate classic sonic, and for the most part it does fine, except where it randomly looks like a Mario game. I think my biggest problem is that the spheres you spend the game running on do not make any sense in this hexagon world.

The level design is decent at it's best and infuriating at it's worst. A lot of levels rely on Mario design sensibilities, but they don't have the quality of Mario levels. They have completely abandoned any concept of design that sonic generally uses. The wisp power ups are here for some reason.

The boss fights aren't good

Last and least the story. It's crap. The villains are one note and uninteresting. The dialogue is cringy. The tone flip flops between really light-hearted, and some weird attempt at serious. There's not a lot to say and way too many cutscenes spent saying it.

Honestly overall it's not completely terrible. The fully 3D levels are fairly fun, but I would not recommend spending money on this. Sonic 2, Sonic 3&k, Sonic Adventure, Sonic Adventure 2, and Sonic Mania are all available on steam. Go play one of them.

Dont get me wrong, this is not a BAD game! But compared to the other Sonic games out there this one is pretty meh in my opinion. The parkour is pretty glitchy and can a pain to work with when jumping on small ledges and with the level design being all circular/tube based it can be really disorinating sometimes at high speeds. Would recommend games like Generations or Adventure 1/2 for better examples of Sonic gameplay. Again NOT a bad game, just not as enjoyable as Sonic's other outings in my opinion!

Sonic Lost World is like Lucky Charms without the marshmellows, or milk. It's okay, but there are better options out there. If you like platformers that are easy to play but hard to master, pick this up on a sale. And if you like platformers with a well thought out plot, story and writing, look elsewhere. This game is okay, but not that great besides on a gameplay and artstyle standpoint and I recommend it if it's on sale. It's better than Sonic Forces, but not better than Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations, or Sonic Colors.

Sonic Lost World is a proper mixed bag.
Sometimes you reach your hand into the bag and pull out a tasty sweet, full of goodness and flavour and it's a real treat to enjoy.
But sometimes you pull out a dirty, hair-covered, mouldy sweet that stinks and puts you off wanting any more sweets for awhile.

That is Sonic Lost World in a nutshell. It's levels are either super fun and creative, or dull as rocks and full of bizarre level design and gameplay full of insta-deaths that you have to spend time learning these tedious levels by muscle memory to beat them.

Too many gameplay mechanics and controls were either poorly explained or executed, leading to frustration and confusion.

The final boss fight was a tad underwhelming and simplistic honestly, especially coming from the difficulty of some preceding levels.

However, the music was good, most of the earlier zones were fantastic and even though the cutscenes seem to have been made on a budget more tight-fisted than Ebenezer Scrooge, they were enjoyable for what they were.

Overall, I did have lots of fun playing Sonic Lost World. It sometimes made me smile, but other times it pissed me the hell off. Still, I'd recommend it for it's creativity and playfulness with it's zones' themes. There's some fun level layouts and different paths to take, so there's a good time to be had in replays.

It's a 7.5/10 for me.

Controls are functional but certainly take some getting used to. Except the homing attack in some places. A lot of trial and error in level design (including invincible enemies and bosses), so be prepared to die. Story is nothing special and the writing takes after Sonic Colors. Much of it sounds generic and stereotypical (to be expected from the designs of the Deadly Six, Zavok is the only unique one here) but there's some pretty interesting development in Tails specifically.

It sure doesn't feel like a Sonic game. Keep that in mind and it is a solid 3D platformer to spend a day on.

An underrated Sonic game that is bursting with creativity. If you see it on sale its worth it. Whilst it can be rage inducing at times, once you're used to the controls its great. - 7/10

I don't know why or how I convince myself that THIS is going to be the Sonic game I've been waiting for every time one of these comes out - that somehow Sega has learned from its countless mistakes with the franchise, and will deliver an interesting and engaging game this time.

It's a Sonic game with a RUN BUTTON. That alone should be enough to convince you that this game has some seriously flawed mechanics. The story (lol), enemy design (lol), confusing power ups (hope you played Colors), and grating red ring hunting are just icing on the cake. It's sad because the art style is gorgeous...Sonic has never looked this good. Too bad I can't say the same about how he plays.

I played this game when it released on the WiiU a few years ago because my best friend let me borrow it and I liked it, It's a different and unique game compared to the other Sonic games, this game gives me SuperMarioGalaxy vibes in some areas and it's not a bad thing at all, one difference here compared to other Sonic games is that Sonic has a run button in this game if you don't hold it he does a jogging animation, I like how Sonic's movement feels in this game he can run up,along and climb walls with the parkour moves, you can also spin dash and jump and continue the spin dash by holding the button and it feels nice, my only complaint for this game is that the bosses are pushovers they are really easy and some gimmick levels aren't really the best but everything else to me is fun I really like this game and I think it is underrated, I also like the music in this game too I recommend you give this game a shot for yourself and give your own opinion on it I really enjoyed this game on the WiiU and I still am after revisiting it 8 years later! (Play it with a controller I'm using my NintendoSwitchProController)

Less successful innovation

As an old Sonic player, I take every Sonic game seriously and find out their advantages and disadvantages. I will analyse the Sonic Lost World from four aspects.

Project Score
Plot 6/10
Music 9/10
Operation 5/10
Layout 7/10
Overall 6.75≈7/10

Plot
Generally speaking, there is no big problem with the plot. The consistent style, sonic saves the world, and egg face is the boss to be defeated eventually. However, there is always a feeling of lack of eye-catching, ups and downs of stories, such as the tails being transformed into a robot, and it feels insufficient to explain here. BTW It is also a good choice to arrange a sonic vs. tails battle. So the plot is quite satisfactory with 6 points.

Music
In my opinion, the background music is the highlight of this game, very nice, and the BGM selected for different zones is very in line with theirs plot, environment and personality, as well as monsters. This is commendable. My favourite is Midnight Owl, Sea Bottom Segue, Dragon Dance. And these are also the zones I played the most. Love it. 9 points.

Operating
First of all, it is recommended to operate the controller. It is difficult to achieve lots of actions and a comfortable experience for keyboard operation, so this is a game on the gamepad. Moreover, many people have also discovered the characteristics of the game, switching games between 2D and 3D. In my opinion, the settings of 3D are very different from SA1&2, SG, SU, SC... There are picks, double jumps, rolls, tree climbing, kicks... It is the most abundant Sonic game before. Unfortunately, the overall speed of Sonic is slow (super slow), it always feels like it is missing the label Sonic is the fastest hedgehog in the world, and its dash is also different from the previous settings. Playing in some difficult zones, it always rolls around, falls to death. The overall feeling is not very comfortable, 5 points for encouragement.

Layout
Throughout the game, there are four levels in each region (except for the volcano area, where there are boss battles in the first, third and fourth levels), the second and fourth levels have boss battles, the first level tests endurance, and the third level tests operation. This kind of layout is reasonable. In addition, there are nightmare levels DLC and special levels of mini games, which are also in line with the settings of previous Sonic games. The 100 missions are new content, which is also counted as the game's steam achievement content. It is not difficult but quite challenging. Well the difference is that the conventional chaos emeralds collection method has been changed to a method that can only be obtained by collecting all red stars in the region, which might be OK i think. Overall, there is no perfect attraction, 7 points for encouragement.

Conclusion
I give a rating of 7, which is also in line with the statistics close to the current Steam praise rate. This game has a big innovation (good job) (ignoring the Super Mario Galaxy), but it is not very successful. I hope that Sonic games can get better and better. I also recommend this game to anyone who likes Sonic. It is a slow-heating type, the deeper and more detailed you play, the better experience and the endless fun you will have.

this game is a disaster of game design. on one hand it has fun 3d levels where you get to take different routes and explore with sonics fun parkour moves, but on the other hand, so much of this game is comprised of filler 2d levels (ala sonic colors) that add nothing but padding to an adventure. when the game is fun, its a pretty good time, but you have to grind through so many samey levels to get to the good stuff. pick it up on a sale if youre interested, but do not pay full price for this

Fuck this game they made my literal favorite game of all time and then made a game where sonic loses his main character trait in a bad 3d world clone. I think any other sonic game on steam is better either because its a genuinely good or it's such a dumpster fire you can easily make fun of it as you go which you can't do here.

A game so mediocre, a game that is painfully boring the rare times the mechanics work.

People were calling this the first good Sonic in years... why? It doesn't teach you how any of the stage mechanics work and when you start to get in the groove it feels so empty and soulless. Controls go from feeling OK to being so overly sporadically quick that you question how you died most of the time. Sonic will go form 0 to 100 whenever the game tries to play with physics. Ice stages launch you for barely going left or right plus left and right are too sensitive while running forward. Sonic's run speed is so slow that I don't understand why the game just decides to launch you at 100mph whenever there's anything other than normal terrain.

Graphics are okay but not much a step up from what I saw in the console version. Not awful but the design is so confused and trying too hard; they try to make it look interesting without knowing how. Still servicable, not offensive. The soundtrack is legitimately great though, every track is a super good listen and honestly sounds out of place in such a gross game.

I personally enjoy playing this game more than Colors and even Generations, it's true that it offers too much and does little to explain them, but the new mechanics work when you learn to use them and its extremely satisfying.

I love Sonic Team decided to do a more open level design it goes well with the new mechanics and to be honest, less mind numbing than the boost formula, however it some levels you can feel the experimentation not all of them flow as well.

In addition, the game sounds and looks gorgeous.

It's disappointing the unnecessary hate for this game scared Sonic Team and lead them to back to the Boost formula with Forces.

Sonic Lost World introduces new controls and environments but fails to make those elements work together. Sonic feels slow but the most glaring part about this is that you have to hold a button to make him run. This opens up the experience to a completely different pace as you navigate the worlds. But Sonic just loses some of his identity because of that. Perhaps if the movement had a cleaner and more free style to it, it could have been more acceptable. Maybe then it would leverage the new units of possible movement. Without this, Sonic just doesn't feel like Sonic. Ultimately, this game tries to make Sonic fit the revolving gravity worlds instead of making the worlds a good fit for Sonic. For some, maybe playing longer than I did will have a different outcome. Either way, this is not the Sonic that I want to know; not a lost world, but a lost Sonic. Game over.

I just bought the game recently and I'd say that if you want this game buy it right now during the SEGA 60th anniversary sale or any other big steam sale when you have the cash. Other wise this game is a really cool game and I think it needs a little more love.

One of the most underrated games in the Sonic catalogue. Run button is a welcome addition that makes platforming much more fair, and in general I'm a sucker for linear 3D platformers (Crash Bandicoot, Pac-Man World 1, Mario 3D World, e.t.c.). That being said, don't expect any cool 'tude or punk rock in this game, it's got more Mario DNA than Sonic, so play this game with an open mind, as if you're playing a Sonic mod of a homage indie game or something.

The quality of Sonic the Hedgehog games has fluctuated wildly over the years, but Sonic Generations marked a return to form for the series and combined classic and modern sonic gameplay elements to great effect. As its follow up Sonic Lost World attempts to do the same but in a planet hopping environment reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy’s.

The controls for both 2d and 3d elements are shared and although they lend themselves better to the more open 3d environments they are often unpredictable in each. The controls don't have the feel of a Sonic game in either environment but are especially problematic in 2d where precise platforming is challenging and will result in frequent, frustrating deaths. This is exacerbated by poor attempts to explain new mechanics in the game such as the variations on Sonic’s homing attack and the various Wisp power ups. The game recognises this issue and will give you a shortcut to the next checkpoint after several failed attempts, but this does not resolve the source of the problem.

The world is made up of seven zones and with the story being told through cutscenes in-between the different levels. The story has no bearing on the levels however and while the overworld has a distinct style for each zone, this is generally not reflected in the levels themselves which all feel like variations on a limited number of themes and are a far reach from the iconic zones in Sonic’s past. As a result it feels less like you are playing a main entry in the series and more like side project or a cheap tie in to the animated series.

At its best Sonic Lost World is a passable platformer, but at its worst it is a frustrating game that is typical of the series’ troubles ever since it made the jump to 3d.

I don't totally understand where all the hate for this game stems from, I suppose it's different from a lot of the modern sonic formula, but is that necessarily a bad thing when many of those games end up being glitchy, automated messes? Sonic Lost World is a fun romp through 7 relatively distinct worlds, and although it makes a couple missteps along the way it is a game that I thoroughly enjoyed. The steam version lacks some of the content from the Wii U version, but aside from that it's generally a decent port and in some ways makes up for lacking the nintendo content and hidden world by offering locked 60FPS and up to 4K resolution. Overall I'd give the game an 8/10, if you enjoy platformers and you liked Super Mario Galaxy you'll probably enjoy this?

Believe it or not, I didn't mind playing this game back when it first came out on Wii U. Sure, the story is bad, and level themes are generic, but I found the 3D-focused gameplay to be a welcome change of pace from the more straightforward design of the prior sonic titles. The music is also Great, as usual. The reason I'm giving this game a negative review is not for the game itself, but for this port of it, which simply does not work well. It took me hours just to get he game running, and I could never achieve framerates higher than the Wii U version, despite my computer being more than capable. There are mechanics that just do not work in this version, rendering the game nearly unplayable. For example, the honeycomb level in world two has a section where you have to use the homing attack on a chain of enemies, and while this is a snappy and satisfying move in the Wii U version, I would never work on this version, causing me to die constantly. If any of you have had these problems and know how to fix them, please let me know, as I would love to give this game a kinder review, but as of right now, I'd recommend the Wii U version. I know it sound crazy, but if you really want to play this game, I found it to be a much better experience.

I wasn't a fan of this on Wii U, and the 3DS version made me understand why people hate Dimps, but using a 360 controller makes it so much more enjoyable. Obviously it's quite different from other Sonic games of it's era, but it's quite solid, with the only issues with the game itself being a poorly implemented and translated tutorial, and some mildly irritating menu stuff (the inventory is pretty much entirely useless except for the Black Bomb Wisps). But, of course, seeing as how this port was done in-house by SEGA themselves, the game is made entirely unplayable due to their hilarious stupidity, same as every other goddamn PC port they've ever done themselves. The framerate is -LOCKED- to 60fps, which means if you don't have a beast of a machine to run this on, it's going to play about as slowly as Sonic Labyrinth, and that's not an exaggeration, it runs that fuckin slow. Literally the ONLY WAY to fix this is to download a mod that fixes this by unlocking the FPS or locking it to 30. Lost World is a great game, but fuck me I am SO SICK of the fans always, ALWAYS having to fix SEGA's retarded mistakes.

I feel like that this game is insanely underrated. Just looking at these reviews, it seems like it's people complaining that this game is not sonic mania. Same people that were complaining that Sonic Generations was bad. Like, the game has insanely good music, great cinematics, literally after every chapter. Graphics is nice too. Gameplay is unique too, I would not call it bad or terrible.
Boss battles are very easy tho so that could be more challenging.
I got this game as a part of sonic bundle that had a huge discount but I would agree that this game is definitely not worth not discounted price.

The antagonists are probably the lowest quality they've ever been and the Mario inspired story/over-world/physics don't really belong in a Sonic game. That being said the stage design is decent and it was still a fun platform game. I would rank this as one of the lesser Sonic experiences but still a decent game.

I have tried to play it multiple times, and every single time I have, I've actually felt painful trying to play it, what with the controls being all wacky and whatnot. I've tried to play it with the standard set up, with the controls altered to my needs, and it still cannot be played. Furthermore, out of what I've played (and later watched others play), the plot is not good whatsoever. This game is mediocre at best, and horrific at worst, but it is not SEGA's worst mistake (that goes to Sonic Boom).

While Lost World is presented very well with great visuals and good music etc. it is perhaps one of the single most frustrating Sonic games of the lot.

The new parkour mechanic is a great idea, it massively increases Sonics mobility and can make traversing a stage very enjoyable. However it's mostly confusing and irritating being both difficult to control and unreliable. The lack of a tutorial means you have to work it all out by yourself and It took me a little over two hours before I got a grip on the controls. But even now I find myself falling to my death very regularly without understanding why Sonic jump/slid/fell off the wall to begin with.

This leads onto my other big issue; the level design. For one thing the game is marred with bottomless pits, even in levels I quite like, which can make it feel like a chore to play when instant death surrounds you on all sides. When it's not bottomless pits it's random, confusing and often pointless gimmicks. Gimmicks include; Sonic turns into a snowball and a light-switch mechanic similar to that of Sandopolis in S3&K. Many of these only put in a single appearance and I personally found them to be either unnecessary or poorly implemented, sometimes both.

I wanted to like this game as it looks so very appealing. The bright colours, good music and even some specific levels give hints to the potential of the new gameplay, but it is not fully realised here. Instead Sonic Team aimed for greater variety at the cost of quality.

Reinstalled the game today after absolutely hating it first time round, thanks to the stiff controls and abysmal level design. Got an achievement for jumping 30 times, then fell down a bottomless pit.

Oh! And then the next level after was Flappy Bird, and if you touch the bottom of the screen you die.

Fuck this game. Just play Sonic Mania instead.

Haven't played much, I have mixed feelings.

It isn't amazing, but I do enjoy the cutscenes/story of this game. The controls are a bit weird, you actually have a dedicated sprint button which you hold down to run around faster which is kinda strange, but apart from that the controls are what you'd expect from a sonic game

I had some problems getting the game to recognize my controller, all I did to fix it was restart my computer and have my controller unplugged before launching the game, then when the game was running just plug it back in. Seemed to work for me.

Saying that this is a bad game just because it doesn't use the Modern Sonic boost formula or level design is in no way justifiable. The parcour system, even though it has its flaws, is fun once you figure out how it works and the game is a good example that a Sonic game doesn't need to be fast to be fun. While I do think it's one of the weaker 3D games, I don't think it's a bad game by any means

Trash, just absolute trash from a game design and gameplay perspective. This game is only about 3 or 4 hours long, but unfortunately most of that time will be spent dealing with bad level design and an uneven and unfair sense of difficulty. The vast majority of the experience is super easy, to the point that I was defeating bosses within seconds and stages only took a couple of minutes each, which is appropriate for a game that will appeal to kids as well as older Sonic fans. The problem appears with some very specific and out of place moments that introduce new elements or design choices out of nowhere with no setup, foreshadowing or even hints to help you. So you go from cruising through the game with nearly 50 spare extra lives to spending half of those just trying to figure out what the developers wanted you to do. No sense of environmental guidance at all.
One very specific example of this is later in the Sky Stage. A robotic dragon appears, and without warning destroys the platforms you're standing on. There's no warning, no cracked platforms for a second and you have no way of recovering. You just have to take a cheap, unfair death and try again. Any other game with the slightest sense of how to interact and teach the player how to deal with upcoming challenges would've had the dragon appear in the background or somewhere, and demonstrate this ability to destroy platforms, before then presenting the player with a dangerous situation.
I only installed the game today, and unfortunately I'm going to be uninstalling and never touching again.
My whole experience with Sonic Lost World just reminds me what a waste of franchise Sonic really is. Constantly trying to fix what isn't broken, always trying to reinvent the wheel with each release. Find a formula that works and stick with it. That's all you need to do. Since this is Sonic, I of course went in with low expectations, but even then I walked away disappointed before seeing the credits. I can only hope that one day SEGA go out of business, sell their properties to someone who cares and maybe, just maybe we can get some half decent Sonic games.

I honestly don't know why this has mixed reviews... Its not that bad of a game it might be tad complicating at times to learn how to the parkour for certain situations but the game isn't all that bad. I seen some one say the game doesn't need to be as slow as Mario. Well it's not that slow if you know how to use the Dash feature properly by holding down Dash after using it and jumping to continue the dash as well. Some people will say they don't like the story but the story is geared towards kids and to be honest isn't that bad. You want bad then get Sonic The Hedgehog 2006 which wasn't to bad other then the princess falling in love with Sonic. The graphics aren't to bad either very cartoonie and colorful. As far as the controls they can be slippy for certain parts of levels when needing to retrieve a red ring. I don't think the characters are that bad in this game. I also don't see any glitches anywhere or any bugs. Why is there so much hate for this game?

I go into Sonic games with a vastly different mindset than other games. I expect them to have bad stories and decent dialogue but conversely solid controls and fun gameplay. Unfortunately, the best thing Sonic Lost World has going for it is either the soundtrack (which is honestly very mediocre) or the CGI intro cutscene, which looks great. Aside from that, there's not much to like. This game has a lot of problems.

I would say that the worst thing about the game is how Sonic controls, which isn't a good sign. The controls feel terrible for many reasons: a lack of air control, slow spin dash, dedicated run button, and new parkour mechanics, all of which make playing the game awkward. The game's story isn't great, but it never really is in Sonic games. What's truly horrendous is the dialogue. While Mike Pollock (Eggman) is typically able to carry with his amazing voice, and Sonic's voice is usually pretty decent/good, every character in this game besides Eggman is incredibly annoying.

All of the above problems, combined with levels that are often confusing and misleading in design, add up to one truly painful experience. I dragged myself through the five hours of gameplay hoping it would get better, and it rarely did. If you're on the fence, just play Sonic Mania or Sonic Generations. Both of those games are a ton of fun.

The actual platforming stages are somewhat decent if not bland, but at least half of them are in sidescroller format in a supposedly 3d game. Then every other stage or so the game decides to throw in awful gimmick stages like trail-and-error rail grinding stages/autorunners that are very out of place, or snowball stages none of which have any actual platforming
Overall a bland mishmash of gimmick stages with awful physics and clunky controls that doesn't know what it wants to be

I couldn't play this for more than the ten minutes I played. The constant rotation of the world and camera makes me dizzy, it feels more like a Mario or Yoshi game than a Sonic game, and it doesn't control well.

After playing the first three worlds, I was totally ready to leap to the defence of Sonic Lost World. Sure, it’s different to the Generations/Colours formula, and brazenly rips off Mario galaxy to a shameful degree. The controls definitely take some getting used to (a run button?), and the game is very poor at letting you know how to play it, with certain new moves like the wall run left completely unexplained. But after a short period of acclimatisation, I was thoroughly enjoying bouncing and boosting around the Tesco value Mario galaxy levels. It’s a slower game than other 3D entries, but that’s not so bad – many of the complaints about those games stem from cheap deaths due to requiring the reaction speeds of a mouse on crack.

But oh man does the game take a nosedive during the second half, and Sonic’s bad old habits resurface alongside some new ones he learned in college. The level design, putting it bluntly is fuck awful. You’ve got it all here – dickish enemies over bottomless pits, hidden springs into spikes and awful gimmick levels. Sonic just does not have the precision required for a lot of the challenges, which leads to cheap frustrating death after death. His homing attack is as fickle as ever, and the wall running seems to work largely when it feels like it. This mixed with some seriously mean checkpointing puts the screws to any fun you might have been having when the levels were designed around Sonic’s broad strokes moveset. The bosses are all garbage as well, and Lost World might feature the most unlikeable cast a Sonic game has ever guffed onto screen. Yeah I know, complaining about the story in a Sonic game is like complaining about the story in porn.

So it’s another rubbish Sonic game then. I know we shouldn’t be surprised, but after Colors and Generations there was a real sense that Sonic Team had worked out how to make 3D Sonic fun. It’s not even as entertainingly, aggressively awful as Sonic Forces or Shadow the Hedgehog – it’s just kind of mediocre, with a solid start that drops off sharply at the midway point. I’m not ashamed to say that I didn’t finish it – life is too short to spend shouting obscenities at cartoon wildlife.
