Definitely try this if you like puzzles but don't worry if you don't beat all of it because it becomes very hard.

One of the greatest puzzle games ever made. Spacechem suffers from a bit of a learning cliff and looks completely impenetrable when seen (especially in screenshots) but if you can make it through that initial block you'll find an absolute gem allowing for a great degree in player freedom in solving puzzles with the game providing three separate metrics for comparing solutions. My only reservation with the game are the boss levels which often require you to manually control the machine which is unique to only those levels and goes against what I feel the game is about but there aren't many of them and solutions can easily be found online if you'd rather not take your time on levels that play so differently from the rest.

Fantastic puzzle game.
Strongly advise that after buying, right-click game in your library, select Properties>Betas and choose 'Community Edition' This is a Zachtronics approved version which has some small but almost vital, quality of life improvements. Most importantly it allows you to save multiple different solutions to a puzzle.

I don't enjoy puzzles, i don't enjoy difficult stuff either. I bought this thing with outdated graphics on %75 discount, for reasons unknown to me. It turned out OK, probably deserving full price.

Assuming you managed to pass first 2-3 challenges ( i was clueless to do basic things even after tutorial ). Things start to click together. I didn't want to continue to playing but i did. I don't envision myself being able to solve the mystery in front of me but every time it ended up that i solved that. 9 hours passed, i didn't progress much but i did more than i think i would. I was planning to play it for 30 minutes but ended up playing x18 of that.

I don't feel like i have learned anything, i probably didn't improve myself, i do not feel smarter than before, it wasn't exciting or addicting experience. But in its own weird way i feel satisfied. For that reason i think it worth playing.

This game makes me feel very dumb for a long time. When I finally complete a level, I feel amazing. It takes an incredible amount of mental energy and stamina to slog through this game. It will destroy you. The difficulty spikes aren't even spikes - they are steps. It never gets easier. You think you're learning techniques and best practices only to be absolutely destroyed on the next level. I love it. This game rocks. It will make you a better person. I highly recommend.

For me, this is the quintessential Zachtronics game. Assembly chemicals atom by atom. Possibly it's just my materials engineering background showing, but the molecular assembly gameplay just really worked for me.

This is a very specific type of game. If you like taking a very large problem and breaking it down into bite-sized chunks, and then executing those chunks of problem-solving one-by-one, this is for you. This is a game that feels like work, but very rewarding work. If that doesn't sound fun, give it a pass. This game is not for everyone. It is for me.

TLDR: if you’re the kind of player that enjoys sleepless nights imagining solutions for logical problems, this is your game; if you’re looking for more casual programming puzzles, stay away from SpaceChem.

There are puzzle games with a single solution that becomes obvious once it clicks in. That’s not the case in SpaceChem. Other than the inputs and outputs, every level (here, a reactor) starts as a blank sheet. Other than your creativity, the only obstacle here is the restricted space you are given. But this leads to the most challenging puzzles I’ve faced in a gama - for what it’s worth, some levels took me days. This is unlike similar games like, say, Opus Magnum, with a lighter approach that allows you to progress with an inefficient solution encumbered only by your level of obsession. And yet, even when you strike an eureka moment and solve the puzzle, you often keep digging for a more efficient solution (the game makes sure you are aware of your ineptitude by showing you statistics from other players).

In essence, in this puzzles you are specifying two circuits to move and combine molecules. Some levels have a second layer where you have to compose multiple reactors. There are no actual mechanisms to synchronize reactors, which leads to clumsy solutions more often than not. A third layer is introduced in boss levels. Here the players can control the machines through some basic commands. This often requires tricky fine tuning to keep the reactors synchronized, but these levels are scarce enough to still feel refreshing when they show up.

The plot is simplistic and mostly unrelated to the puzzles, but provides a nice framing to the campaign.

Then there are the community levels, and things get even wilder there. Even if you’re not feeling masochist enough to try to solve them, it’s worth just to see how far a seemingly simple concept can go with ingenuity. (If you are into CS, a player has shown that the engine is Turing-complete; so it’s a neat way to explore some automata theory concepts.)

It's probably the most difficult game I've ever played. It's melting your brain...
One important note - enable ordering for bonds in Game Options (numbers), otherwise you'll scratch you head many times and abandon the game. The ordering for bonding is quite important here if bonding happens in square.

The first thing mentioned about Spacechem is that there are innumerable ways to complete a level. And that solutions are compared according to the number of instructions used (fewer is better) and time to complete (less is better).

While these considerations are going to guide your game play, what they tend to forget is the feeling of ownership that goes way beyond simple metrics.

You take pride in _your_ solution because it is uniquely _yours_, because it satisfies _your_ sense of rightness and efficiency and aesthetics. This game should be measured in terms of the emotions that it engenders, from a sense of beauty to the feeling of having created something that is the way it should be.

How many straight up puzzle games can make such a claim? Clearly, SpaceChem is more than a puzzle game.

SpaceChem is love. SpaceChem is life.

This game is about using your programming skills to create space chemicals using waldos. This might sound simple on paper, but you're wrong. Very, very wrong. Because of two things:
1. You only have limited space in a reactor, 80 tiles
2. The programming language is in that space and is executed as your waldo moves along the symbols.
This gives SpaceChem a very interesting challenge: how do you construct reagents with just this limited scope? And that challenge is just scratching the surface.
You can only go over a specific tile twice: once horizontally, once vertically. You NEED to take advantage of this to do anything complex. Let's say you have N₂ with a single bond, and you want it to have a triple bond. What you do is drop it onto some bonders through a grab/drop horizontally, perform two bond + instructions, and then grab it vertically from the same tile of the grab/drop. Now you're holding a triple bond N₂. Fantastic.

Then the game drops a bombshell: fusion. Now you're performing addition with atoms. You can make almost anything as long as you have enough input reagents. Sikutar will break you.
Then the game drops another bombshell: flip-flops. Now you can make loops, counters, etc. Remember going over a specific tile twice for specific things? It's now (mostly) a thing of the past! Just go over it again with flip flops. Amazing!
Then the game drops another bombshell when you access ResearchNET: fission. Now you're doing ADVANCED math with atoms. You WILL need to bring up a notepad to figure out most nuclear puzzles. Absolutely bonkers.

You'll tear your hair out trying out some of the later puzzles, and rage quit, but then you'll be dreaming about atoms and possible optimizations...
Just know you most likely won't be seeing the ending. It is a very hard game after all. And that's okay.

Despite all the time I've spent on games, this random puzzle game still manages to be one of my most played games ever. Every single puzzle is meticulously thought out and flows extremely well. The basic mechanics are extremely simple, yet they quickly allow extremely complex behavior when used correctly. Every time I play through this game I appreciate it more, and there are so many fun features that add into it. For example, even if you've beaten the main campaign, it can be a lot of fun to go back through each level and try to find the fastest solutions and the solutions with the least amount of symbols and reactors used. On top of that, you can go through some of the ResearchNet problems and look for more challenging puzzles or more unique puzzles. Either way, definitely worth a play, especially if you've got some spare time.

SpaceChem is one of those games that are too clever for my non-logic little brain. Needless to say, after a promissing start, I quickly became overwhelmed by its complexity and reached a part which I had to constantly search for the solutions online loosing all motivation and will to continue.

In any case, it's a worderful and complex puzzle game and I must recomend for whoever wants and is able to tackle the challenge.

A puzzle game that can convert the suffering from hours of chemistry at high school into a virtual experience. It’s a game of extremes, the graphics are simply annoying, but it can grip you playing one level for an entire day.

Unfortunately, the doesn’t explain or reveal you ways of completing the puzzles. All of them require you to start from scratch without hints. A good game if you like puzzles, but probably not for its scientific accuracy. Although I am interested in the topic, I did not think the game was anything extraordinary and would not recommend it to another individual.

Oh man, SpaceChem and I go way back... I first picked up this game in 2015. I enjoyed the first few puzzles, until I ran headfirst into a difficulty spike on the third world. Quickly tiring of my inability to make progress, I moved on to other things, but it always kept nagging me in the back of my mind. I knew it was within my abilities, and I even tried to pick it up a couple times in the months afterward, but I was never really able to sink my teeth into it.

Five years and an engineering degree later, I decided to revisit my old nemesis. I restarted the game and quickly progressed to the same wall I had hit in the past... and to my surprise, managed to blast through it. And the level after that. And all the way through to the end of the game. And the weirdest thing is I don't really think I'm any better at it now than I was five years ago. I think the difference is perspective.

SpaceChem is absolutely a hard game. But I don't think it's hard because you need to be a genius to solve the puzzles. Instead it's hard because it demands lots of time and effort and is uncompromising in its expectations. Unlike other puzzle games, where there's often a eureka moment where you make a vital connection and the rest of the solution falls into place, every inch of progress in stitching your molecules together is hard won. You have to experiment, try different approaches, fail, tweak your designs, and sometimes tear it all down and start over with something completely new to get everything to work.

It wasn't until I had worked on real world engineering problems that I truly appreciated what SpaceChem was asking of me. Once I did though, I came to love its challenges. The feeling of looking at a puzzle for the first time and wondering how the hell you're gonna even begin to solve it, then putting the last piece of your crazy contraption into place a few hours later and have the whole thing come together and just *work*... It's incredible. That feeling is what you buy the game for.

It's not bad, but overall I can't say I had fun playing it.

It felt more like a chore than entertainment after the initial hour. It seems I lack patience for SpaceChem, and I wouldn't recommend it to my friends either. If you are a fan of puzzle games this might be for you, but for average moron like me it's a bit too much. I'd rather be popping moles in ArmA or such than trying to figure out correct configuration for picking up atoms.

I recommend it only if you know you want this kind of a game. Then you'll probably have fun.

This is a classic game and well worth a purchase if you truly - truly - like puzzles. I love that I'm 50+ hours in and still have a good portion of the levels left to play. At this point, it's usually taking me 4+ hours playtime to solve the larger challenges. Sometimes a lot more, if I go too far down the wrong track.

Yes, there's a programming aspect to this, but more in the sense of automation: you're effectively creating little robots to do what can only loosely be described as chemistry (more like math). There's a story to tie it all together, and it's good, but hardly central to the game.

The game shows its vintage in the UI sometimes, but it's still a lot of fun. Don't blame me if your head explodes tho. It's a risk of the job.

One of the best puzzle games I've played. You've got some room for creativity in your solutions, and when your initial solutions are hacked and butt ugly, it's fun to go back and improve them. You will get stuck and have to re-engineer your solutions from the ground up. You may well take a long break from playing when you hit a roadblock (as I did on more than one occasion). You should NOT look up solutions as the fun is in the challenge (and the optimal solutions out there will make you feel stupid). But if you like puzzle games then you should experience this. I feel like this will continue to age well. Does not require any knowledge about chemistry.
