Spellforce 3: Fallen God

Vorwort:

Dies ist ein allgemeines Review für alle Spellforce 3 Teile;

Positive Aspekte;
[olist]
[*] Individueller Spielstil
[*] Eingebaute Rätsel sowie auch viele Eastereggs
[*] Zeitraffer bei Fähigkeitengebrauch (Schnellzaubermenü)
[*] Exzellente Musik im Spiel
[*] uvm ….
[/olist]

Negative Aspekte;
[olist]

Probably the best RTS I played this year. Very good singleplayer campaign and the Trolls are a rather interesting factions to play as.

Might have to see how stuff changes for a second playthrough and with different skills on each character but it's rare that an RTS campaign makes me want to replay it so that's very nice.

I just finished a playthrough of this campaign (around 28 hours - I launched it through the main Spellforce 3 game rather than directly, which is why my play time is listed as so low), and I am very impressed. The story is wonderful, the characters are interesting, the voices and the language and the culture of the Trolls is brilliant. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this.

This expansion was fun and good value on the whole, but it didn't have the same level of polish as the main campaign.

The characterisation of trolls as dumb and simple, at least early into the game, was a little underwhelming. The trope gradually gives way to a more favourable conceptualization as the arc progresses, but it never really fully develops beyond a simple shamanism and spritualism. The campaign doesn't really deliver much in exploring it either.

Itemisation was weak compared to the main campaign and it is very craft-heavy. You basically never find any drops, and while that's consistent with enemies not dropping weapons suitable for trolls to use, they could've made up for this with vendors or other gearing mechanics. It was also a bit disappointing that the expansion didn't really introduce any new combat mechanics.

It struck me as weird that there's no female trolls in the game whatsoever. I usually like to have some diversity within the group, but just isn't possible in this expansion.

In terms of RTS, it's really not this game's strong suit. It's annoying that you sometimes have to click 20 times for buildings to place on the ground. I don't know what the issue is, but it doesn't seem to matter what way the building is facing and the build-placement indicator shows all-green(?!), but there's clearly something blocking and the game doesn't communicate it.

The other main gripe I have is unit pathing/AI. The same criticism can be made of the original campaign, but the expansion's pathing really becomes a point of frustration when you try to micro units in big battles. It's worse with trolls because the unit size is comparatively big so they either end up pushing units out of the way or they run the wrong way toward their death because they can't get around other units. There's not much point to a strategy game when your units don't follow your strategies.

I'd still recommend the expansion, but definitely pick it up on sale, and if you're new to spellforce 3 check out the main campaign first to see whether you like the RPG/RTS implementation more broadly, because the expansion is essentially more of the same.

Review of Spellforce 3 Reforced:

Story 10/10
Characters 10/10
Roleplay 10/10
Real-Time Strategy 10/10
Graphics & Atmosphere 10/10
Soundtrack 11/10
Difficulty 9/10

Features:

- Great Storytelling
- Mix of RPG/RTS
- Perfect Pacing
- Noag go smash! <3 Trolls

My personal experience:

Honestly overall the best campaign in SF3 so far. In my view Grimlore Games nailed it in every aspect this time.
The story is interesting all the way through, lots of smaller decision making and some bigger ones with even different endings.
The trolls took some time getting used too, but the main characters as well as a lot of side characters have interesing and reasonable personalities and really grew on me during the campaign. Quests often bring up some unexpected stuff and span the emotional spectrum between hilarious and very sad.
The pacing of the RTS segments is really well done this time for the average player compared to the really hard reforced burning blood campaign, which was the major critique I had.
The RPG elements include each troll having individual non combat perks, specific troll gear and overall epic boss battles. Maybe the difficulty of the RPG segements could be a little higher, but it is definitely an improvement.
And the visuals and setting are obviously great again, especially the soundtrack is once again amazing. Everything is really well done and polished.

Its really hard for me to find negative aspects for fallen god, except maybe getting used to playing a stupid, evil brute (my first impression, but I was wrong) and having a lot of dialogue (optional&skippable), which might not be for everyone.
I just hope and wish, there will be even more expansions or games at this qualitiy level for the Spellforce series.

Sharp tusks and thick hide

Standalone expansion to Spellforce 3/Soul harvest

This game you are controlling a party of trolls.

I've loved Spellforce 3, and this is my favorite one. Its been a long time since I've gotten this feeling, probably original warcraft 3. I am super happy they decided on another viewpoint race. The trolls talk different, sound different and have different values. Its reminiscent of Alliance/Horde. Back when Horde was cool.

Its a nice blend of strategy, story-telling, party rpg and loot. Wonderful stuff, and can be played in coop.

Can totally recommend. I am annoyed that I didnt give this franchise a play earlier, will certainly be keeping an eye on it from now on :)

After so many years of almost copy-pasted RTS, Spellforce 3 and its expansions not only present themselves as splendid products but also as able to surpass all their amazing predecessors.

These games have everything:
- Grimdark story, setting and visuals;
- Amazing characters and character design;
- Fun gameplay, enjoyable both as a cRPG and as an RTS in equal measure;
- Just the perfect amount of humour at the rare but right times.

It would take me hours to write a complete article on why I love this game and its expansions so much, just take a leap of faith and play them, you are not going to regret it.

I'm glad they kept making more content for Spellforce, it has a wonderful universe to build and expand upon. This title offered up a unique and and interesting experience. Being able to play as Trolls like the ones in this game was nifty, they're all tanky giants that deal plenty of damage, and just want to be left to their own; their motivations and personalities were really interesting and getting to play the story of the Campaign was really gripping. It was actually an emotional experience at a couple of points.

While some design choices throughout the games weren't my favourite, the Spellforce series has had fantastic narrative storytelling, unique gameplay, and is/was a welcome addition to both the RPG and RTS genres.

I'm happy to give this the Labour of Love award for the year, Spellforce 3: Fallen God is another entry into the Spellforce series that has a relatively niche community, but a strong and loyal community all the same.

One of the few remaining good RTS games/franchises.

It actually gets better with every DLC they add.

Modern graphics, nice gameplay, an incredible amount of story depth, EVERYTHING is voiced (hey there, Blizzard, TAKE A LOOK AT THAT! Still can't believe only ~15% of World of Warcraft has voiceover). There are missions with heroes only (lots of ability trees, decisions, items, crafting...) and heroes-RTS maps where you have to build, defend and attack enemy sectors.

There is nothing I dislike about this game.

Previus iterations had too much RTS with too many waves or enemies constantly spawning, but Fallen God has it right. It's just the right amount and it's a shitload of fun.

Another Masterpiece of the Spellforce series, Fallen God have significantly overhauled many flaws of it's RTS aspects.
Game is much more polished now, also I'm happy to say game feels more optimized too.
And it has great story, not many games actually let you play as Trolls. They aren't exactly like Orcs but similar, it's kinda refreshing.
Of all of the three Spellforce 3 series, this is easily one of the best, but Story wise. The Main first Spellforce 3 is still the best IMO.
Gameplay wise, Fallen God.

Let's keep it short: If you are here, you probably already played SP3 and SP3 Soul Harvest and now you want to know if Fallen God is a good expension.
It is. And you should buy and play it. The campaign is fantastic, it's somehow a step up from Soul Harvest.

And if you somehow ended up here without having played the previous games: If RTS, RPGs or the combination of both are either your thing or sound interesting to you: Get SpellForce 3, play and enjoy it, then play Soul Harvest and then come back for this one. It's well worth it!

We all know why you are here. Tired of all the mediocre writing in other games? Fallen God contains more of the excellent writing and world building you've encountered and loved in Spellforce 3 and Soul Harvest. If you haven't already: go play those titles first. This series punches well above its weight.

As before there's equal parts RTS and RPG, but this time with trolls in the main lead. Grimlore succeeds in giving these trolls humanlike emotions. It's far from savage grumping, although they still crush their enemies with their sticks too. And they crush hard. So what are the differences? There's some crafting involved (trolls can't wield human weapons), but it's really not that pronounced. There's not that much loot to begin with; Grimlore wisely decided to focus on other gameplay elements. The trolls are certainly sturdier than the human protagonists and consequently the game feels easier, especially in the RTS part. Perhaps this was due to playing Fallen God coop (which works great btw!), because most RTS missions could be accomplished by just rushing the opposing base. Is this a problem? I don't know. Most importantly, we had fun! But Spellforce veterans might want to push the difficulty slider up a notch. On a technical note: the egregious long loading screens are finally gone!

Besides it's Spellforce 3. Many elements, including the graphics, have been copied from earlier games. That might be a problem, but Fallen God's engaging nontheless. And that's due to the quality of the writing. So soak up the atmosphere and enjoy. This is another great addition to the Spellforce series.

Very fun game -- Enjoyed playing at a fine-grained but easy level for many, many (115) hours -- tried hard to get all the goodies everywhere -- missed a bunch; maybe next time. The very end battle was somewhat tricky and quite challenging for me. I finally used a start-over potion for each of my characters and made them as powerful as I could. Maybe that helped but it also helps to play out the battle very near where the dark elf is conjuring magic 'helps'. I gathered up well over 100,000 gold but found little to spend it on.

I played through the entirety of the campaign and have quite enjoyed it.

The story of trolls doing everything in their power to survive (and how it is constructed) is refreshing and due the uncertainty of the outcome of completing a certain goal the suspension was high until the very end. I received this product for free but for me it would have been worth the price, had I bought it.

The stories tightly written, but a little bleak at times and the endings can be bitter sweet. But the gameplay is solid and the mission design is a lot tighter so you don't have to spend ages chipping away against massive armies for some random side quest. Voice acting and characters are also interesting. The only thing I didn't like was the decision to add random characters from different IPs to one of the beach levels. That's just some weird immersion breaking stuff and makes the production studio feel like excitable amateurs rather than professionals.

I admit I was a bit disappointed that SpellForce 3 Fallen God was all about trolls. This is the first time in the SpellForce series that your avatar was not human. Having said that, it makes sense in the story - you are not a rune warrior or human officer with an army of trolls; you ARE the trolls.

The story itself is even better than before, and the previous stories of SpellForce 3 and SpellForce 3 Soul Harvest were each excellent. It also ties in some aspects with the existing lore, so keep an eye out for that.

There were a few cons in this game, such as that you only ever have these 4 trolls in your party and that each’s primary skills set is fixed, though this works in this case because the story demands it.

The voice acting, as always, is superb, though I care not much for the troll speech pattern.

I like the new units, the buildings, and I especially love the centralized base building (something I was hoping for since the first SF3). Each troll in you party also has a personalized mechanic that can be used to interact with the environment (e.g., breaking walls, digging through tunnels).

I would love to see another expansion for SF3, as I believe Spellforce 4 would be too long a way off. But for me this current series of SpellForce 3 is even better than the previous versions.

Nice game as far as the campaign goes. However, once you finish the campaign it becomes hollow and there is no replay value unless you want to play the campaign again.

The campaign is worth the money and a great base for campaigns with many options for expansion with other campaigns. My advice in playing is do all the optional quests possible along the way as once the main campaign ends it falls off a cliff.

It's a perfect experience. I completed the campaign (omw to reach a different ending) and it was freaking blast to play. Great voice acting, amazing graphics, meaningful choices that change not only the very ending but each quest. Multiplayer is competetive and entertaining. OST impeccable.
You do not need to play SF3 before playing this one, and playing Fallen God does not spoil anything from the main game.
Do you like fantasy RTS games? Well, you NEED to play this one. It's a true gem, a masterpiece.

THQ is back! And brings back AAA RTS quality we didn't see since Dawn of War Dark Crusade or The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth 2.

The developer did wonderful and faithful implement the feedback of the community. You are going to experience here unique and different factions, with a really neat advanced base build and huge armies. A game for everybody, old school veterans, till new players.

If you are learning to play RTS games, the game does offer a really cool feuture to play Co-op with AI, so the AI does help you manage your base and lead the army. This way I can even as pro gamer play vs my casual friends.

I really like how they did improve upon the base build, its really nice and fluent.

+ story
+ voice and music
+ visual

- RTS
- RPG
- too demanding in terms of specs

Review:
The game story is amazing, although, I could not play it very well because the graphic had to be kept at low, because it melt your pc. Even with the lowest setting it was still lagging. Because it is not a full RPG and not a full RTS the game feel a bit shallow on both sides.

And this is what a TRUE expansion is about, there is nothing to say to the owners of spellforce but buy this now, and for those who still have not played spellforce , just know that this franchise is what warcraft was suppose to be but making a name by its own. this is a good stepfoward about RTS. very good game.

Disclaimer: Review in progress.
I have been playing this when I get chances. So far I feel the game or well the expansion is kinda meh. I felt like I can give the trolls a chance but its not my cup of tea. What has really been grinding my gears is the lack of free roam or the ability to make character after every story in this game so far and roam the world. I dont care for MP. If I wanted that I would play warcraft 3. So far after this latest expansion it just feels like spell force 3 focused on too much linear story that it became the typical trope of the chosen one. While the trolls have some interesting mechanics. I rather play as the other races in SP. There are some rather interesting characters like the pig smith and his brother but otherwise I dont care for the troll tribe.

Also the story is your typical chosen hero and leader. I will try to finish it then report back the rest of it.

Pros so far:
-Soundtrack
-voice acting
-some really interesting characters
-graphics
-some map designs are cool.

Cons so far
- Trolls are what you expect: cave man talk.
- Story is meh
- No Free roam in any spellforce 3 to be seen.
- too much focus on MP.
- Generic Tropes
- Weak Animations for trolls
- Some trolls and their armor looks like warcraft 3 orcs which makes me want to play that instead.

Overall I am finding it hard to justify paying full price for this expansion. The story is just not that interesting and I found myself more interested in characters who where not trolls that join you later.

Finished it, at last. 8/10

It's a decent game. While I never truly liked sector based RTS, I still enjoyed Spellforce 3 Fallen God, but mostly for its single player campaign. And soundtrack.

Pros:
- good soundtrack
- good story and campaign
- interesting additions to the game, albeit not as many.
- beautiful graphics and maps.
- 20-30 hour campaign
- interesting choices

Cons:
- although soundtrack is kinda short, but still great
- seemed relatively short, but I liked it anyway.

Overall: 8/10

By far the best work from the studio so far. They have been continually improving since spellforce 3 in pretty much all areas and it makes me very hopeful for spellforce 4.
Positives:
UI is better than ever
Incredibly well done dialogue in terms of both writing and voice acting, i'm deeply invested in the plight of these trolls.
Great commander challenges make learning new things fun, tied in with narrative, tense gameplay and nice rewards.
Interesting item system with trolls breaking down all the old types of gear to be used in crafting exactly what you want for each of your trolls, including legendary items dedicated to specific characters.
The environments are as beautiful as ever.
Major main story mechanic of acquiring 'echos' of certain emotions directly tied into narrative and gameplay choices works really well. Gives even more weight to choices of morality and practicality.

Negatives:
Later development of units can be confusing having to send units into 3 different training camps, sometimes multiple times, very difficult to remember all the combinations and slows down your unit production when you're trying to get certain compositions.
The achievements seem buggy but I may have made a mistake myself in understanding them. (They were buggy in previous spellforce expansions too)
I suppose a person who wanted to play as non troll races could find being locked into them as a negative, but I think they're great and the story definitely works best by making them the absolute focus.
I don't want it to end.

Much like the main game and Soul Harvest, Trollforce... or .. err Fallen God is a narrative about a ragtag band of trolls with their backs against the wall. What separates this installment from the others is that there are only 4 playable characters and that you follow them much more closely. There are less building/war missions and more story driven sequences, though still all very much in the same Spellforce-y way with quality voice acting and pretty decent writing. If that's your jam, then this too will provide a relatively lengthy campaign (~20hrs+) for you to enjoy.

Sharp tusks and thick hide.

This is a really good RTS, its like if Warcraft III had stayed in the same style as Warcraft II but still incorporated the hero concept. The story is amazing.

This game is really remarkable. It's an RPG/RTS hybrid that gets both aspects right. The RPG stuff is solid; you've got gear, stat points, skill trees, meaningful dialogue options - it's all there. For the RTS, there's very little micromanagement involved and it feels quite streamlined, sort of a AoE/WC3 combination. The story is shockingly mature and existential for a high fantasy video game about trolls. Literally every single line is voiced and they all sound great. Seriously, the voice acting in this game is incredible and there's a LOT of it. My only complaints are that units can get stuck on each other sometimes and the skill trees are a bit confusing. The campaign is at least 20 hours if you do everything (and you should, almost all the side-quests are neat.) The game is 100% worth the price of admission for the campaign experience alone but you can also play skirmishes against the A.I. You can also play against other people but unfortunately I don't think the player-base is really large enough to support this. It's probably the closest thing to WarCraft 4 we'll get in this lifetime, what a great game.

Campaign: Building a demigod simulator.

Cons:
First and foremost, faster loading screens than in Soul Harvest
Graphics look gorgeous (your computer probably gets hot)
Fair soundtrack
Chilling gameplay
RTS aspect is improved from the Soul Harvest
Campaign has a lot of new aspects too as crafting
You can smash brittlebones

CONS:
A lot of monsters and faces of NPCs used from previous games.
The copy of Gothic Remake costs a fortune in this game.
I would like to build walls in RTS.
You cannot fight the final battle in the campaign by yourself, there should be a third option.
Need more maps in skirmish and ways to make multiplayer more spicy.

Overall I liked this game. Campaign took me about 23 hours with me trying to complete all optional quest.

If you're buying this for the single player campaign I totally recommend the expansion since I personally believe this is the best storyline out of all three spellforce 3 additions.

But if you're buying this for the Multiplayer, Its less than 1 week after the release and I was only able to find 2 matches out of the 3 hours in total I spent in the ranked matchmaking for the game. And after those 2 wins I'm now ranked the #6 top dwarf player in the world........out of the 51 total people who have ever played as the dwarf race...so if that doesn't give you a good idea what the multiplayer experience is like then I don't know what will. Maybe they will fix the matchmaking problems with time, but by that point it might be just about impossible to find another human being actually playing the game like what happened to both the OG Spellforce 3 and Soul Harvest over the years.

So no matter how much I might be interested in the multiplayer mode, I don't think I'll spend another 3 hours trying to get a server connection that actually works between players.

A fantastic top down RTS game combined with constructive and RPG elements.

The campaign, which can also be done in online co-op mode, brings the player into a story that can last up to 20 hours. There are also many dialogues with voice acting, but many of these conversations also reveal many useful details and often funny moments between the trolls.

Before you start the campaign you have to adjust the appearance of the characters you will control, you will also have to choose a certain class and special attacks per character.
When playing the campaign don't forget to explore next to your route, this way you will find additional items that you will definitely need as you progress in the story and also to craft other specific items or weapons.

The campaign is also less RTS but more progressive in the story, in addition, the skirmish mode, which you can also do online, is concentrated on constructive RTS gameplay, and this is a very interesting mode because here you can work very strategically and As with most constructive war games in online multiplayer you never know how smart your opponent is in war strategies.

In RTS mode you will also be able to choose between different races, besides trolling you will also be able to play and build with the resources of the orcs, humans and elves.

The game also has a map editor available with a wide range of choices, the correct location is often a big step towards victory.

Summary

This is my favourite expansion in the spellforce 3 series - and the previous ones were already quite good to begin with. With a captivating story focused on a smaller, defined cast of characters, it manages to bring a lot more personality, backstory and interaction to the RPG elements. They really nailed down the feeling of a tribe and family, down to the smallest details.

Gameplay

The core gameplay is the same, although with some changes to fit the new faction - for example, they cannot use any of the 'human' armor and items (doh) and instead they scrap it down to craft their own items.

I also feel that overall this expansion is more focused on the RPG part, rather than RTS - which is fine for me, but something you should be aware of if you're looking for more RTS.

Story

I like the story a lot more compared to previous titles (which were pretty good too to begin with). It's a more personal, tribe/family story, focused around survival rather than 'saving the world'. It allows you to connect to all the main characters - which are very well defined and written. There's a surprising amount of dialogue, which, this time around, can significantly impact the character development and story.

Replay factor

Quite surprising for a spellforce title, but this one has quite a good replay value. Not only there are different choices to make throughout the story, but they impact the available skills and development of one of the main characters.

Really well designed standalone adventure. Great skill trees design, nice atmospheric levels, cool leveling progression, interesting story. Overall quality addition. If they made more adventure addons for spellforce 3, would be cool. On the other hand, i liked Soul harvest a tiny bit more. But i greatly recommend having both.

Dont believe the reviews with low playtime. It has somewhat slow start, but picks up really fast after first 2 initial levels
