Die Produzenten von Syberia I und II sind stolz, Still Life präsentieren zu dürfen.
Victoria McPherson ist eine brillante, junge FBI-Agentin, die einen Serienmordfall untersucht. Die Zahl der Toten beträgt mittlerweile schon fünf und wegen fehlender stichhaltiger Anhaltspunkte und einem Berg von unwichtigen Beweisen beginnt Victoria Anzeichen von Ermüdung und Stress zu zeigen.
Sie entscheidet sich dafür, eine Auszeit zu nehmen und im Haus ihres Vaters im vorstädtischen Chicago ein wenig abzuschalten; Schließlich steht der Weihnachtsurlaub vor der Tür. Dennoch findet Victoria keine Ruhe. Sie entdeckt stattdessen eine alte Fallakte ihres Großvaters und beginnt darin zu lesen. Seltsamerweise ähnelt Victorias aktueller Fall dem alten sehr, sogar im Modus Operandi des Mörders...

Spannend, tolle Geschichte, visuell für seine Zeit klasse und bildgewaltig gemacht! Auch von den gezeigten Gemälden war ich schwer beeindruckt (Hut ab vor Daniel Perron). Atmosphärisch zum Schneiden dicht, ein richtig guter Thriller. Ich habe es erneut erworben (im Bundle), da meine DVD nicht mehr lief. 10 von 10 Punkten.

Offizieller erster Teil der Still-Life-Reihe [spoiler] inoffizieller zweite Teil, wenn man Post Mortem dazu zählt. Post Mortem ist an sich ein eigenständiges Spiel, das vorher heraus kam und ein Teil der Geschichte von Viktorias Großvater erzählt. Diese Geschichte wird aber nur als ein Easter Egg in Still Life thematisiert, also ist Post Mortem für die Still Life Reihe nicht wirklich relevant [/spoiler]
Als FBI Agentin Viktoria McPherson ist man im Jahre 2004 einen Serienmörder in Chicago auf der Spur. Parallel spielt man immer wieder ihren Großvater Gus der eine Mordserien im Jahre 1929 in Prag untersucht. Da beide Mordserien frappierende Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen kommt Vicky dem Täter, durch studieren der Aufzeichnungen ihres Großvaters, auf die Spur.
Typisches Point&Click-Abenteuer der alten Schule. Die Rätsel sind leicht bis mittelschwer gehalten und gut in die Story eingebunden.
Der grafische Stil der Hintergründe erinnert sehr an die Syberia-Teile 1+2. Sie sind wirklich schön gemacht und musikalisch gut untermalt. Viele der deutschen Synchronsprechern sind ebenfalls aus der Syberia-Reihe erkennbar. Da es sich um den selben Publisher handel ist dies auch nicht weiter verwunderlich.
Ich persönlich hatte nur kleinere Grafikprobleme im gesamten Spielverlauf. Die Haare von Vicky hatten leichte Grafikfehler und die Münder der Charaktere waren beim Sprechen komplett asynchron.
Immer noch ein fantastisches Spiel, auch wenn die Grafik aus heutiger Sicht veraltet ist.

Selten so ein unüberdachtes, beinahe unmögliches Spiel gespielt. Diese sogenannten ,,Minispiele'' sind teilweise so kompliziert aufgebaut, dass man als ,,Normaldenkender'' in 100 Jahren nicht draufkommt. Die deutsche Sprachausgabe übersetzt viel falsch, so, dass es einen völlig anderen Sinn bekommt.

Grafisch gut gealterter Point-and-Click-Thriller, der an Erzählungen um Jack the Ripper erinnert. Diverse Schauplätze im modernen L.A. sowie dem Prag der 1920er Jahre, die als Polizistin Victoria McPherson, respektive ihrem Großvater Gustav (genannt Gus) McPherson, erkundet werden. Wechselnde Spielabschnitte (Gegenwart vs. Vergangenheit) die gelungen ins Spiel integriert wurden und deren jeweilige Handlung schlussendlich ein Gesamtbild ergibt. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist im Allgemeinen durchschnittlich, abgesehen von einigen schwierigen Einzelrätseln.

Meine subjektive Spielspaßwertung: 8/10

Still Live hat mich gepackt. Es handelt sich hierbei um ein klassisches point and click Adventure welches von seiner Story lebt. Zu Beginn spielt man eine junge FBI Agentin Victoria die einem Serienmörder auf den Fersen ist. Dieser scheint sich besonders wohl im Rotlicht Milieu zu fühlen und mordet sich dabei durch die Prostituierten Szene .

Im Laufe des Spiels eröffnet sich immer wieder die Möglichkeit mit Victorias Großvater zu spielen der seinerzeit (zu Beginn der 1900 Jahre ebenfalls einen Serienmörder jagt). Dabei erfährt man einerseits viel über Victorias Familie andererseits sind die parallelen der Morde beachtlich....besteht da etwa ein Zusammenhang.......oder bilde ich mir das alles ein......

Die Rätsel sind größtenteils logisch, wobei es auch einige gibt die leider nur durch trial and Error zu lösen sind aber insgesamt haben sie Hand und Fuß. Die Story wird durch wirklich coole Zwischen Sequenzen voran getrieben und machen Lust auf mehr.

Gleich vornweg ich hatte leider immer wieder den Error das ich im Menü nix auswählen konnte oder der Mauszeiger im Menü nur noch wild herumgewischt ist, auch konnte ich irgendwann weder Saven noch Laden...
Alles sehr schade denn insgesamt ist es ein stimmiges und im Storytelling gutes Point and Click Adventure.

Mein Nein für die Kaufempfehlung hat ganz klar auch mit den zuvor bereits erwähnten negativen Fakten zu tun aber es gibt auch einige Pros die ich nicht vorenthalten will.

Die Story ist dabei das herausstechende Merkmal denn die ist sehr gut erzählt und wird dem Spieler gut rüber gebracht, einige Wendungen inbegriffen, macht Spass.
Die Grafik ist wie zu erwarten sehr durchschnittlich, keine Optionen zur Auflösung und alles ist in den Einstellungen eher einfach gehalten.
Die Animationen sind für 2005 auch Standard wie ich denke, sehr holprig und man bleibt immer wieder irgendwo hängen.
Rätseltechnisch ist das Game sicherlich kein Höhepunkt aber es hält einen bei Laune, hier und da sind einige sehr stupide dabei aber das hält sich in Grenzen.

In einem Sale ist es den Kauf jedenfalls wert wenn man auf Old-School-Adventures steht und Lust auf spannende Storys hat.
So für die regulären 9.99 € würde ich es nur sehr hartgesottenen Adventures Spielern empfehlen die keine Zeit haben zu warten...

Leider überwiegt für mich ein Negatives Spielerlebnis, ich konnte es wegen der zuerst genannten Probleme nicht zu Ende Spielen und das frustriert bei einem auf der Story basiertem Spiel doch sehr. Evtl. versuche ich es nochmal aber daran glaube ich erst wenn ich es nochmal installiere :D

Ich habe Still Life durch Zufall entdeckt und dachte mir,einfach mal ausprobieren und da beide Teile jetzt im Angebot waren,hab ich mal zugeschlagen!

Zu aller erst,die Story ist richtig spannend und das von Anfang an.Zu Story an sich möchte ich nichts sagen aber für einen Sherlock Holmes Fan sehr zu empfehlen.

Das Spiel ist zwar schon etwas älter und die Grafik ist daher nicht die beste aber trotzdem immer noch recht ansehnlich.Mit der Zeit lernt man Victorias (Hauptcharakter) Großvater kennen,wo man auch in deren Zeit reingeworfen wird um Hinweise zu finden.

Für mich gibt es nur einen Minuspunkt,ein kleines Minispiel,wo man ein Schloss knacken muss,da habe ich mich richtig aufgeregt! Nach dem Spiel brauchte ich erstmal eine Pause.

Trotz dem kleinen Ärgernis habe ich das Spiel 5 Stunden hintereinander gespielt,weil ich so von der Story gefesselt war!

Mein Fazit ist,sollte man als Krimi- oder Detektiv-Fan gespielt haben! Auch wenn es nicht neu ist,macht es trotzdem Spaß,auch wenn das Minispiel nervt.

Nachtrag: Nach 9 Stunden habe ich das Spiel beendet und bin unglaublich begeistert von der Story dieses Spiels!

An Teil 2 werde ich nicht vorbeikommen!^^

I had a free copy of syberia 1 and 2 on GOG, i thought its just talking and clicking game then i tried it anyways and now i automatically fell on this one and i love these kind of games now lots of puzzles to open your brain

A series of murders have been taking place and we're plopped in the middle of it as Victoria McPhearson. She's talented at her job, definitely a bit of an asshole with her snarkyness and she'll constantly stand up for herself, even when it costs her more than it gains her.

The dark vibes of the game were the main reason I actually played this. The sleek and stylish presentation and the boldness of not shying away from gruesome details was just too alluring for me to miss out. I don't even like Point and Click games. I hate puzzles and honestly this game's a technical mess to run. Never managed to get widescreen to work well and basically I ended up playing in a really small window.

But regardless I finished the game. Sure, with hints along the way, but I did it. It kept me compelled enough to see it through and generally I'd say it was worth the time.

The puzzles were fine for the most part. The best being logical puzzles, but you also do have some puzzles that are hindered by the low resolution of the background images, making it feel like a bit of a pixel hunt, especially in the flashback sections.

Yes, flashbacks. This isn't just about Victoria. It seems like it, but actually almost half the game is occupied by Vic's grandpa, Gus. He's in Prague, solving a similar string of murders of ladies of the night, trying to not only help them, but to also keep her love safe, who's a potential future victim.

The present sections are definitely the better parts of the game, however Prague hosts a great atmosphere, an even better soundtrack and the better dialogue of the two. You'll find the fun style and brutality in the present sections. In fact, the game pulled some moves that I never would've expected, leaving me completely dumbfounded in the best possible ways.

The cutscenes hold up to this day. Normally I wouldn't even mention them, but they're really fun to watch. Good animations and none of them feel pointless either.

The one criticism I have and it's a big one... is the ending. It's bad. It commits so many murder mystery and general storywriting sins that it feels like they just abandoned the entire story during the last quarter of the game. It doesn't spoil the entire batch, but it definitely sours the experience.

Odds are you have Still Life. It's been given for free so many times and the amount of bundles it has been in is also massive. If you have any interest in the premise, then play it. If you don't like point and click games like me, keep a walkthrough on hand to not get stuck for too long. It's a hell of an experience even with its mistakes.

I recently discovered Still Life from finding Syberia on the same day, strangely. Over 100 pages of games & these two titles stood out. (Great timing too, as Syberia: The World Before - Prologue is coming out in December!) Now I know why because I'm a protective fan of both franchises, even though I didn't grow up with them. Whilst Syberia is a whimsical, & imaginative adventure, Still Life is a dark & mature story . Starring Victoria McPherson; a sarcastic, funny, & likeable F.B.I. agent that wears bunny slippers at home! She is tasked with solving a string of gruesome murders in a gritty Chicago setting.

soundtrack - brilliant
controls - functional
U.I. - easy to navigate
replay value - none
user friendliness - 1/2 & 1/2
voice acting - good
bugs - can't click on some areas in certain locations (switch to keyboard controls then back)

Comments: Puzzles are good up until the second half into Chapter 5. They get seriously unfair & YOU WILL NEED A WALKTHROUGH! Make sure to save before the maze & the key puzzle in Chapter 6 (you can't re-enter the maze & the key puzzle won't reset). Overall I will never forget this nostalgic experience & can only hope Microids makes this a prequel or sequel like Syberia.

Great detective game.

As a point-n-click horror adventure it has everything you can ask for. Well rounded story and character development, good voice acting, a lot of intrigue and mystery, interesting and challenging puzzles, good soundtrack...

I also love pre-rendered backgrounds, they are pure soul, I wish we could go back to the time more games used this technique. They achieved such a depressing and bleak atmosphere with them in this game, particularly in the 1920s Prague sections.

I did not like that some puzzles were way too hard tho. You could be staring at the screen not knowing what to do for hours since the game sometimes fails to give hints for very specific things you have to do in order to progress.

This won't happen too often but when it does it can be a bit frustrating. Also...
[spoiler]that friggin' robot puzzle, who thought that was a good idea?[/spoiler]

Anyway overall its a solid game, worth playing if you're looking for a mix of horror and mystery.

Wonderful game. Could be better if it weren't for that horrible spider robots puzzle. Well, it isn't a puzzle. It is a form of torture. But thanks to some marvellous gamers I found the 'save' and after 3 years of trying and giving up, I finally had my happy ending. Now, here I go to Still Life 2. Let's see what it may bring. Happiness or frustration. Who knows!

I was really looking forward to playing this game. Both attempts to start the game end with me being unable to do anything once I progress to the bathroom with the dead body. The game clearly hasn't crashed, ambient animations and sounds are still playing, but neither the mouse or the keyboard will make my character do anything.

Possibly a really good game, but not possible for me to recommend it.

Story
voice acting, for the main characters
Wraps the series up nicely

Cons:
Some of the puzzles were trial and error, which required a lot of patience or the use of a strategy guide (ring puzzle, cookie puzzle, and lock picking)
Slow movements to different locations, yeah the character can run, but in some areas it takes multiple screens to get through to get to the area map
UI is still a bit awkward
[spoiler]Unless you played part 2, you won't know who the killer is. This could be bad as the end doesn't wrap up nicely if you haven't played [/spoiler]
Some pixel hunting required, but it's not that bad.

It's a good story. Some of the puzzles had me confused as heck. Had trouble getting it to run on Win 10. Once I got it up and running, I experienced one soft lock.

For an aged point-and-click game, I find it holds up pretty well. The plot is full of twists, and a couple of the puzzles took some serious brain power to complete (especially the baking one). Despite the graphics, I love almost everything about this game.

It is the second time I'm playing this game. Great storyline and challenging puzzles. I really like it! Contains graphic scenes and profanity is used in dialogues.

While at this point, I can safely say that click and point games aren't my cup of tea (or rather, coffee; I don't like any tea), I do recommend Still LIfe for a couple of reasons.

1) Price. It's literally less than a dollar on sale.

2) Voice acting. For some reason I thought the voice acting was particularly good in this game, distinct tones and nuances in speech helped make it more immersive despite it's outdated graphics. There's a lot of humor that comes almost entirely from the delivery of sentences.

3) The story. Okay it wasn't too amazing, but I thought it was pretty good, especially the chronologically precedent of the two.

4) The puzzles. Eh, while overall I think this aspect of the game was well done, there were a couple that wound up with me making educated guesses. But most of them were really clever and it was rewarding figuring them out. The puzzles were pretty hard which can be a pro or a con depending on how you view it (or I'm not very smart, which is a very plausible alternative), but I did, for the most part, like having a real challenge.

Its drawbacks would be its outdated graphics, painstakingly slow transitions between some scenes (okay, I'm just impatient and require nonstop stimulation, they weren't that bad) and having to add Directplay to play at all and crashing even then, making me remove Directplay, add it again, and restart. And one spelling mistake. Whatever, not like that's been bugging me occasionally since I saw it a couple days ago...

Anyway, buy it if you think you'll like it, don't bother if you think you won't. It's not the price you'd have to consider, it's the time investment. Even if you would've liked it and didn't buy it, you're not missing out on a masterpiece or anything.

I liked it a lot at the time, however nowadays it hasn't age that well and feels more like a derivative of Se7en than anything too original. The high points are quite strong, like the protagonist, Victoria, and the chapter in Prague that is the best part of the game. Unfortunatly the lowpoints are really, really bad, like the horrible and irrelevant cookie puzzle or the hard as nails lock puzzle.

This version works well with modern systems, it locks into a 800x600 resolution though.

Fun game, good story line and integrated puzzles. Puzzles are not overly difficult but a few times in the game play it wasn't clear what you needed to do and occasionally the objects you needed to interact with were very picky about where you pointed to know you could interact with them (things like pointing to the bottom of a silver box next to a spa to find out it was a toolbox with an exacto knife because you needed something sharp ... after you walked through a kitchen full of knives that you could not interact with)... the final puzzle in the game is pretty much a brute force combination because the data you get during the puzzle is not related to the solution...

Over all if you don't pay much, it is a fun distraction for a few hours - 13 hours played to completion.

Wow. I had a blast playing through Still Life. After just finishing Post Mortem I was glad to see it really was a prequel to this game. Though I had alot of issues with Post Mortem I am super glad I played it now. They link the two stories really well. I've become quite invested in this series and characters now and it hurts to read that Still Life 2 missed the mark apparently.

PROS
+ First of all, damn son them pre-rendered environments are sexy! Almost on par with Resident Evil remakes. I am so gutted this art style has been lost to time. The fixed angles are placed just right and there are some truly artsy and cinematic shots used.
+ In fact there's a lot of survival horror era quirks to be appreciated here that I loved. Camera placement obviously, picking up items shows it spinning towards you much like RE 1-3, the menus in general are similar. Look at item, combine item, read files etc. Character head tracking towards items of interest. I appreciate these little nuances.

+ Sound design is real nice, music is somewhat used sparingly throughout large portions of the game and replaced with minimalist computer whirring, light buzzing, footsteps etc it feels really grounded and cold. In contrast to the previous game that almost always had music, Still Life's music fits the feel of the game really well, both in modern segments and 1920's Prague they've really made them feel different. The game visually and audibly, drips with atmosphere.
+ Voice acting is great, I have no complaints. The characters all stand out to me, I really like Victoria our lead. Her attitude and humour was actually refreshing for an FBI agent.
+ The story was really good and had a lot of stand out moments. You will feel all kinds of things. Joy, grief, disgust, laughter. The characters main or minor are well-written.

+ Puzzles are much better than the last game and easier to navigate what tf is going on in general which is a plus.
+ The Prague sections of the game feature none other than [spoiler] Gus McPherson. The main protagonist private eye from the first game. I was not expecting this. And I love how they link it together with Grandpa Gustav. [/spoiler]

CONS
- I did have to look up a guide for one particular puzzle and oh boy was it a doozy. I don't know why they made such a small task the hardest thing in the game. Without entering spoiler territory, you have to pick a lock. That's it. Have fun when you get there. I'd imagine in 2005 people might have quit and never come back.
- For the most part the environments were easy to navigate but once or twice I'd spend a good 45 mins looking for an item that is grey and pixel small on the screen. Very tedious.

- Much like the first game, the ending is rather sudden and abrupt. But I want more which is always a positive sign of a great game. [spoiler] I also had a good idea who I thought the killer was, my bet was on Richard. The arty-farty boyfriend of Victoria. Alot of things pointed to him but even his character model looked like Mark Ackerman, the killer from the Prague murders. So the Chicago killer could have family ties like Vic&Gus? Either way, we don't get a big reveal moment because sequel potential I guess. [/spoiler]

- The environments are gorgeous but graphically the game is lacking in other areas. Character models can be abit goofy looking, and they still have the jittery mouth thing like Post Mortem. Which is almost endearing but it's very weird. Cut-scenes sometimes look worse than the game itself.
- The game in some areas is almost too easy. Which makes it more accessible but perhaps not as satisfying.

Overall I suggest you definitely give this a go if you want to play a grisly murder mystery point and click game with some great puzzles, characters and a gripping story. There's definitely something in there for classic horror fans too. I'd love Microids to bring back this series, I think they struck gold.

LOVE. THIS. GAME.

It takes detective point and click to a whole new level with CSI elements. Wish the 2nd one didn't suck so bad.

The story is interesting, bloody, a bit grim, you play as a detective in the present as well as in the past (no more spoilers).
There are small videos for the significant occurrences, they are very good and give you a feeling of participating in a movie.
The problems you have to figure out and solve are not obvious in my opinion. Some are harder than others,
The small puzzles are hard, but there are only a few, maybe too few for our taste.
Sometimes you have to use the walk-through, but it's fine,
All in all a very interesting and really good game!
The ending is a bit abrupt, but at least there's a sequel!
