Über das Spiel

An adventurer pulled out a roll of paper from under his garments. That was the map that a man in the tavern gave him. The map depicted the castle, and among its rooms, the path to the treasury was marked. They say that the treasury contains a lot of jewels and gold, but the most valuable of them is a diamond. They also say that it is the largest diamond in Dorgan, and maybe even in the entire world! Someone even asserted that for this precious stone one can buy a small castle, and for the rest of the money be fairly well-to-do until the end of their days. It was these stories that led the hero to the mysterious castle. You may ask, what is the name of this adventurer? His name is Swordbreaker!

The story of the game tells about the bloody and adventures of Swordbreaker before his coming to the mysterious castle. The hero has to go through many trials before he perhaps finds what he came for.
Swordbreaker will have to destroy hordes of enemies and solve a lot of puzzles to make his way to the castle. Upgrade Swordbreaker’s skills, find unique weapons and armor. And most importantly — move towars your goal!

  • dynamic battles in the vast areas of Dorgan
  • mysterious locations full of enemies and secrets
  • character upgrade system
  • RPG elements — change weapons, armor, and spells
  • dynamic change of music depending on Swordbreaker’s karma

I like Joe, the Pet :). I had him up to Lvl 3 and he served me well. But the control with controller was not really satisfying for me, so I played it with mouse and keyboard. That went better than I thought at the beginning. I hoped that the castle would go on and then some maps and and and ... and more ;)
all in all I found the game worth playing and I enjoyed it. Maybe there will be a sequel in the far future? With a scale of 10 I would rate with 8. <3

DISABLE: Auto camera follow.
CAUSES: Serious Screen issues and controller issues with adjustment manually which I AS MANY PREFER.
FIX: Hit box detection its way to wide for enemies.
FIX: Needs to be-able to RE-MAP Controller keys to all and any not just in steam store.
not sure if the level system is good or not still grinding on enemies also maybe not so many mobs in beginning until balanced a bit more.
Other than this I like this game it has a better feel than ARCANIA and I play a lot of B games this looks and feels a lot better and has potential. keep working and who knows raise the price when it gets to the vision its shoot for

I have played this game about 10 hours so time for my review, The overall game is not terribly bad using the Unity engine but would be much much better using a much better engine like Unreal. I knew right away what kind of game I was getting into when I noticed it was made using Unity. It feels like a remake of Nintendo's Super Ghouls and Gobblins game which I still like playing over this game. Feels like it was made using free Unity assets. The balance of the game feels a bit off and you can easily get killed if you pass gas the wrong way which I have died quite a few times until I got more used to the controls. This game was part of a Indie bundle so I did not pay much for this game.
Do I recommend this game? well I would have to say no at this time sad to say, It does show promise and will continue to observe to see if any more work has been done to this game and edit my review as see fit..

Overview

Swordbreaker Back To The Castle (SBTC) is a Fantasy third-person action RPG, prequel to Swordbreaker: The Game made by the same studio. Here, players impersonate Swordbreaker, a mighty warrior with an uncertain past that after reading about his supposed destiny, makes way for the Castle in order to find out the truth. This title narrates of the perils and challenges encountered by the hero before entering the castle, as the land around is ravaged by an undead uprising.

???? The Good Side
  • Overall decent visual qualityThe fantasy world of SBTC is reasonably good looking, with decently detailed models, textures and characters. It still manages to deliver decent environments and passable atmosphere in most of its locations. Not a masterpiece by any means but can at least hold up its own in the current times. The addition of physics to enemy corpses and some props gives a bit more realism to actions.
  • Rewarding exploration
  • Each level does have a good number of secondary locations, secrets and hidden loot to find. It is very much necessary to gather as many consumables and valuables as possible to face the challenges ahead, while certain places have optional bosses and unique gear as well. Exploring the world definitely feels meaningful and interesting - while also integral to character progression itself: those who are not thorough will be severely underpowered later on.

???? The Bad Side
  • Awful combat systemBe it with melee attacks, crossbow shots or magic once unlocked - every way the combat of SBTC is a total train wreck. Attacks in melee feel extremely stiff and inaccurate, it's not rare to have the hero swinging in a different direction than intended for no reason. Weapons have no weight or impact feel behind them, you won't knock down or make an enemy lose balance even with massive swords. Magic is underpowered and clunky to properly aim, while crossbows are totally useless because of low damage - unless for kiting. Damage ranges of weapons are way too broad, same goes for enemies, as consequence you won't know if your next attack will kill an enemy or do little more than a scratch. Dodge-rolling and parrying are a thing: while the first works, the second is tied to random chance - and not to your timing or skill. The fact you can spam potions and the total stiffness of movement translates into battles becoming exchanges of DPS where the biggest sponge wins.
  • Major balance issues
  • For the first part of the adventure, your character will always be under-powered, as almost every skill available for level up results gimmicky or downright useless. Just a few enemies will be a danger and resorting to kiting, other gimmicks becomes a standard. After finding a specific armor, the game becomes the opposite as you'll be able to tank most blows with little effort. At no times the game feels balanced, it's either you being an emaciated weakling or overpowered a minute later. Bosses are often just HP sponges with huge damage and sketchy collisions, a real chore to face and defeat.
  • Severe game design issues
  • The main quest often will entail finding parts or items to proceed, too bad there isn't any clue to their location - not even visual or lore wise. This translates into you running for every meter of each map like a madman in search of vaguely described objects. This is often a tedious, numbing process with items sometimes placed in totally illogical places as well. If you happen to run out of potions to restore your HP, you'll have to wait 10 seconds tor 1HP passive regen - the character has 100 base HP - i'll let you do the math.
  • Generic story with ridiculous voice acting
  • At no time the plot feels even remotely engaging, while most voiced characters have terrible acting, especially the final boss speaking broken English with a strong Russian accent behind it - that was something else. It's a generic, uninspired story that has no identity. The character has 3 voice lines he repeats continuously without the slightest emotion.
  • Horrible optimization
  • The game consumes an immense amount of CPU and GPU compared to the only decent graphics and relatively small scenarios. To give you an idea, it consumes more resources than Death Stranding. There is definitely some big problem with the engine and/or programming. It has framerate drops and stuttering even on top-tier hardware.

It took me around 6 hours to finish the game on Hard. For the cheap price of 5,60€ but also terrible quality, I recommend avoiding this game at this time.

In-Depth Breakdown

???? Gameplay Analysis
Gameplay is divided into Exploration, Character Management and Combat.

Exploration
Is performed on foot through open levels. Your map shows all the located points of interest that usually house main story items or optional locations. Exploring is a necessity as most weapons, consumables and currency are scattered in the world. Being sure to clear most enemies is also key to not be under-leveled later. Sometimes you will find puzzles to solve (2 in the whole game) or quests (2 as well) that give out generally good rewards or unique weapons / armor. Hidden chests are located in remote places and contain sellable items as well as equipment.

Character Management
Is done via the inventory menu where you can equip gear, level up your skills by assigning points in one of the trees, and see your statistics. Each skill tree has passive abilities and two spells to unlock, each for a different play style. Inventory space is unlimited, so there is no need for management. Between missions you'll be able to sell / buy from a traveling merchant who will sell much needed potions and weapons in case you didn't find them in the previous level. Later on having many potions and good equip is necessary, so better find that gold lying around.

Combat
Plays out in third person and tries to imitate more famous games such as The Witcher to name one. It fails miserably because of absolutely terrible animations, clunky controls and all over the place balancing. Supposedly, timing and stamina management would be the centerpieces, but it all comes down to a big mess where you either have to kite enemies around forever, or power through them once your gear is potent enough. The low variety of enemies and equipment delivers the final blow to an already flawed system.

As a standalone game i would not reccomend it. However, if you will look at this game as a prequel to swordbreaker - it is pretty good. Though you better first play original swordbreaker, cause there are a lot of references to it in this game.
As for the gameplay itself - it is slasher with little rpg elements, it lacks polish and divercity but overall, after you complete all 3 levels, you will be pretty satisfied with it.
There is also survival mode which is pretty fun actually and i would reccomend devs to improve it a bit - add loot and bosses in there and you will get even more enjoyable expirience! :)

Well where do I start, overall this game is alright, best part about it is the look of it, the nature and world is amazing to look at. Other than that everything is fine, nothing special. The Swordbreaker is an interesting weapon but i can only be used on swords when there are a ton more enemies that don't have swords, (I don't know about later in the game, I'm only a couple hours into it, even though my Steam record doesn't say that)

The thing I reckon people don't like about it is the start, in the first few minutes you are dropped into a world if you follow the path you have 2 bats, 1 boar, about 4 skeleton and 1 archer in a small area which is every overwhelming right at the start. There is a "tutorial" but its literally just words that pop up on the bottom of the screen which you don't really pay attention to it if there are a bunch of enemies in front of you.

It's hard to stealth that area too mainly because of the boar, you need a certain area to beat it in so other enemies can be attracted and if the boar hits you you can literally go flying 10 - 20 metres away. (See video linked for that).

The reason why I've recommended it is because once you get through the start and actually understand how to play there is an alright game there with great visuals. It's just the start that ruins a new players view on the game. There is also a difficulty level that can be changed so I recommend that if you get overwhelmed at the start.

This is the link to my First Look Review, it has the first 30-40 minutes of the game and what I thought of it straight after: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07CUjuZAEew

This game has a lot of enemies with the potential for accumulating experience quickly. In the time that I have played this game, I noticed that it is constant daylight. I think being able to see enemies quicker in the daylight, gives the player the advantage to be able to plan an attack that does not result in the character losing his health and dying. This game has kept my interest and I intend to play it to its conclusion. Anyone looking for a RPG, should get this game.

I'm sorry but this game seriously sucks! For a game that is supposed to be a Action / RPG game or whatever the hell it is, it seriously does nothing right, Enemies appear out of nowhere and you are forced to face 10 bats/boars/skeletons at once (and you die after 3 hits). The game has multiple glitches as well including textures and more. If you want an RPG type game, DO NOT BUY THIS! Go play the Witcher, Skyrim, Dragon Age or any of the hundreds of great RPG's out there!

some serious flaws and game changes need to be made

A retro-3d action game that's made with passion by indies. Not too friendly for casuals, but fine for good old game lovers. It requires you to lean tactics and might seem hard as you start.
Don't hesitate to wright devs about troubles or bugs if you encounter those. They would fix it ASAP. For example I had an issue with Ultrawide screen and someone wrote with a same problem that day. Today it's fixed.
