There's a lot to like, more than what's not to like. Yes it can stutter at times, yes the characters kind of look the same. But these are issues that plague any demo. The idea is it's not done yet. But what is finished looks spectacular. The music is perfect. the wide open shots of the town are stunning, and the degree of interactability is impressive. It rivals Frogware's Sherlock Holmes in that regard.

I have never played any of the Syberia games, mind you. But if this is anything to go by, consider me satisfied customer.

Demo version of the fourth installment.
Syberia: The World Before - Prologue, unlike its predecessors, allows players to take control of two characters. In addition, in the game, he will travel not only two completely different, distant places, but also two time zones. The two stories will be set in an adventure game with logical elements that has been qualified for visual novel games.

The story takes us to 1937, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, to the city of Vaghen, where we meet our first protagonist. And she is a young, talented pianist, Dana Roze, a 17-year-old girl whose career is dominated by the specter of the impending war. A fascist threat that could destroy her dreams.

At the same time, we go back to more modern times, to 2004. There we take control of Kate Walker, the heroine of the well-known previous Siberia series.
We meet her in a rather unfavorable situation for her, when she is imprisoned in a salt mine in Taiga.

Syberia: The World Before - Prologue is a slightly different look at the well-known adventure series, which, through a journey not only purely adventure, but also in time, offers the opportunity to face hidden secrets. The title is to offer a classic, in line with the tradition of the series of puzzles, offering a symphonic soundtrack composed by Inon Zur, the composer, among others, of the previous games from the Syberia series.

As with Syberia 3, the performance is abysmal, the options are completely lacking, only 3 low/medium/high presets are available (you don't even have an option to turn V-Sync On/Off or anything else whatsoever) and there's stuttering everywhere.. again, just as with Syberia 3.. which of course, to this date has not yet been fixed!. (or will ever be) The system requirements are phenomenally high, especially in this of PC gaming hardware crisis period and the visuals are nowhere close to back up suck requirements.. I couldn't stand playing Syberia 3 because of these performance issues that were never resolved and wouldn't dare think of upgrading my hardware for the current prices. My PC specs are above average given the current situation and such games simply cannot justify such bad performance, such high requirements and such lack of support or fixes from the developers.

All in all, I can't recommend this game as I cannot even play it on decent hardware - just the same as Syberia 3 was (and still is to present day)

How tired of the whining of sufferers who dream of returning to childhood ... Realize that Siberia will not return it to you, and stop throwing mud at the sequel!

Beautiful detailed world, wonderful music, live characters and intriguing the plot of the story allows us to count on the fact that the game will turn out good - not the very PERFECT-SIBERIA-MY-CHILDHOOD - but just a worthy project that can interest new players, including.

This prologue showcases this game to be a linear, dull and slow on-rails visual novel with clunky controls, awkward exposition-like dialogue, no puzzles whatsoever and horrendous optimization to the point of rendering it unplayable at the highest gfx settings.

Not a good look at all, though I hope the actual game is going to be worth it.

The atmosphere and graphics were beautiful and I'm sure the story would've been amazing, but I just can't get over the play style. There's no reason for it to be point and click for movement and selecting options by clicking and dragging is too buggy, it would take me 4 or 5 attempts in some choices to select one because the cursor would just get stuck. Also it seems to refuse to load in fullscreen and there is no in-game option to fix this, even using the Steam launch commands didn't solve the issue.

I have waited a long time for another Syberia game as I enjoyed all the others. It kept freezing on me though and was a bit slow in places - also it might be useful to have a mouse control sensitivity choice in the options as at the moment it wanders all over the place and it's annoying. I would still recommend the game.

Sadly, I have to say that I didn't really like how this one started. This prologue has a completely different feel from the original games. I myself loved the third one, which most people hated, but still most would agree that the game felt a lot like the previous ones story and characters-wise. I can't say the same here. The story becomes much darker and grittier (violence and the aftermath of it is very clear just in this prologue); I'm not sure if the youkols are going to be present or not, but they are barely mentioned here. And Kate is very much a different character with the same name. There are vague ways in which you could justify these changes, but they don't really make sense, nor were they ever foreshadowed in any way in the previous games (which is, honestly and sadly, a sign of lazy writing, yet not the only one, for there are other things that are really hard to swallow even within a world as fantastical as the one the previous games created). Gameplay-wise, I found the characters to be even harder to control than on the previous game (even when many will prefer this one due to it looking a bit more 2D-ish, and thus, more similar to the first two), and I've had a game-breaking bug while playing which demanded me to redo the entire fourth chapter just so that I could see the last scene (it's a prologue, it's bound to be a little rough around the edges, being just a preliminary demo of the original game, but to have such a huge bug that prevents you from finishing it? It's even been mentioned before by many people in the forums, since nearly a year ago!!! how come it hasn't been fixed yet??!!).
Overall, I can't recommend this prologue, and I hope the full game doesn't have as many issues. I was considering buying it right on release (or even pre-ordering it), but now I'm more bent on waiting and seeing what the first reviews say about it, and perhaps getting it when it gets a big discount...

The new Syberia looks and sounds great. The music is the definite highlight here. The visuals are nice, but not nice enough to warrant the game struggling to stay above 30fps on hardware exceeding recommended specs. Modern ultra wide resolutions are not supported for some reason and the graphics settings are limited to a High, Medium, Low selector. Even basic usability like skipping cinematics is inexplicably missing. Camera controls seem to invert from time to time for no apparent reason as well. And the story is not that engaging, more exposition than story really, and struggles to keep the player's attention, only to end abruptly without managing to hook the audience into getting the full game.

Love Inon Zur's music. Love the visuals/art style/lighting etc. Love the direction of the scenes. Love the voice acting. This is so well done, it's incredible. I dig pretty much everything about it.
If the full game keeps up with this level of quality, gets a little optimization going and has puzzles that actually make you think, it'll make a strong impact.

Small caveats are frame dips (the game is demanding on high settings, for sure), somewhat clunky controls and dialogue is a bit expositiony. But that aside it's a serious contender for shut up and take my money.
The world needs more adventures of this caliber.

Let’s start with the graphics – game looks great, but it’s not optimized. We could say this will change because it’s only a prologue, but Syberia 3 was also made using Unity and was never optimized, so I don’t think World Before will be optimized ever either.

Actually I don’t care much because I am Syberia fan they lost now and I will not play it.

This game is in fact a hard reboot with a new story, characters and gameplay and has nothing to do with original story, characters and gameplay.

It is sad but this is a trend these days – in movies, comics, TV shows… and now games. And frankly I’m sick and tired of it.

Syberia was used as a popular brand, because creating and advertising a new brand would be too expensive and risky. They will most likely hook some of the old and nostalgic Syberia fans. They did this to me with Syberia 3 and I’m not falling for it again. Syberia 3 gameplay was bad, but at least story kept true to the two original games… to some extent.

But let’s get back to this game. Spoliers ahead…

Instead of finding more about interesting and fantastic new world as we did in original Syberia (games 1 and 2, and BTW that was also a scam because we needed to pay for two games to get one full game – yes I’m pissed now about this game series so I’ll give them no slack any more) we are going back in time to find out about National Socialist Party harassing some J…, sorry V-somethings… they called them differently in this fantasy town just before WWII (?). I repeat - fantasy town just before WWII!

I know history most likely better then the people making this game, I love history, but I play games to have fun, to explore, to enjoy something new and interesting. I played Sybera games for that reason and if I wanted lessons from history I would rather read a book or watch a documentary. So this is a big no-no for me.

You start playing as Dana. She has nice but unfamiliar face. It’s a new character so that’s normal? Am I right? Yes.

Later you play as Kate. She’s a familiar character so you should be able to recognize her from previous games? Am I right? No, because she doesn’t look like Kate Walker. It’s not the haircut, it’s the face – face is different.

Not only that, but this other woman Katyusha (Kate’s love interest) have almost identical face! What the…? All three characters have almost the same face!

To make things funnier Katyusha finds a picture and calls for Kate to see it. There is this Dana character on the picture. Katyusha tries to force Kate to find something bizarre with the picture and Kate can’t. Eventually Katyusha is like – this girl on the picture (Dana) looks the same as you Kate! Isn’t that weird?
What a facepalm moment… they ALL look the same, for God sake!
And not one of them looks like Kate Walker!

Regarding gameplay – it’s the same as in Syberia 3 - watered down casual adventure gameplay… and with simpler and less actual gameplay then in a casual adventure. I worked on that type of games and I know what I’m talking about. Those games are meant for casual audience and are not particularly challenging, but this gameplay is even less challenging. I don’t think of myself as a casual player so this kind of gameplay is definitely not for me. But don’t get me wrong – surprisingly there are few great casual adventure games! I would never know about it if I wasn’t working on this type of games. When you are “hardcore” player you don’t want to play “casual” games… you know what I mean – we all are arrogant that way. But to get back to Syberia… so called Syberia…

To show what I imply about this new Syberia games gameplay I’ll give an example – you search for key items or close-up scenes on larger scenes. This is not challenging since you have indications for it. Sometimes you need to move some item on the scene to reveal another interactive area or key item or activate a cutscene. So basically there is no gameplay. It’s very linear.
Like I said – casual games are more challenging than this.
Purpose of this “gameplay” is in fact just to get the player to another narrative moment – dialogue or a cutscene.

Plus there is no save, so if you need to quit playing it, next time you “continue” game will most likely put you way back at the start of entire game segment (last time map was loaded). The same save issue was in Syberia 3. This is very bad since gameplay is boring and not particularly challenging so you’ll need to go through it all over again. Just to mention extremely long loading times.

Gameplay is more similar to Life is strange then to any point and click adventure. Only with less pace and more running around.
Since developers decided to go in this direction I would prefer if they made a gameplay similar to Detroit: Become Human. This was a great game with a lot of ways you can influence the story. You actually DO play the game although it’s based on narrative.
But this would probably be too much for developers. So making a watered down casual adventure is an easier and simpler choice. Disappointing…

Another strange thing is the Diary – Kate’s diary is in fact diary of a guy who’s following her. I don’t’ get it… And Dana’s diary is in fact Dana’s diary… so... what to say? Inconsistent and strange.

Regarding the story - purpose of unexplained and idiotic ending of Syberia 3 is finally clear – Kate was taken by ex-Soviet-evil-Russians to reboot the game series after she get pointlessly held in a working camp prison for a year.
After Syberia 3 I thought that fictive ex soviet state is a communist state – they do still exist in 21st century. But in the diary it is stated that she was taken by fascist militia and is now held in a salt mine prison camp controlled by neo-Nazi mobsters... in Russian taiga. Should I laugh or should I cry?
These days if you are progressive it’s cool to call yourself anti-fascist and a Marxists so that’s probably the main reason why they did that.
But like I said, I know history very well and I know what each of these ideologies did… and will do again if we let it happen. I don’t want those in any kind of fantasy setting, thank you very much.

To cut this review short(er) here is the conclusion - I’m working in game industry for many, many years, and among other things I work as a game designer. I can spot some things way ahead, and I can spot lack of effort (or ability) to create an interesting gameplay, world, characters and interactions between. They lost it in Syberia 3, but selling Syberia The World Before as a sequel (or prequel, whatever) is a grotesque way to insult the fan base.
Inability to create anything new and interesting is hidden behind overblown, unoptimized (although beautiful) scenes. Putting million times before seen anti fascist narrative (in a fantasy type of a game) and on top of that forcing sexuality upon main character (which never in the game series was a subject) as pillars of the story shows complete change of direction. But most prominently this is made to fend off any type of critique. Because if you dare to say this is not what you expected or wanted to see in Syberia game series… well, you are evil! You MUST be evil! So you better shut up. Not me, sorry.

Ideology before and instead of a story, virtue signaling instead of gameplay… it’s a disgrace, not game development.

I can somewhat understand this if developers couldn’t get the money to make this game without following this path. Never the less, it’s a shameful and sad path to follow.

Why this is bothering me so much? Because Syberia (1 and 2) was a great game, a legendary point and click adventure. So they ARE able to make a good game, but they just shamefully used its brand and fame and turned it into virtue signaling platform with no gameplay.

Initial scenery is wonderful but Dana's walks like a child with a wet nappy hanging behind her legs. Has no one watched how a woman's body moves when she walks? The musical scene was fabulous although operating objects is difficult. The Nazi theme was unpleasant and when Kate Walker turns out to be in a lesbian relationship down a salt mine I really lost interest. Not sure why they changed her face. Where is the wonder of the first Syberia ? That is what I really want. I think I'll just replay that game and forget about this one.

I was really surprised at how interesting and entertaining this game is. The creators made a wise decision to release this prologue teaser, because on the surface I wouldn't have considered this game otherwise. The first chapter, which takes place in the past was just okay, and kind of reminded me a little of Bishock Infinite. But fast forward to present day Siberia, and the game takes on a whole new edgy feel with a mystery to solve. I won't spoil it too much, but the discovery of a hidden chamber brings a new sense of excitement that hooked me on the game and leaves you hungry for the final release. Can't wait for the full release.

This was great! I was a little wary after reading some of the reviews. This is a step in the right direction. Its beautiful and ran perfectly on my pc but i do have a 2080ti and at some points frames would drop to 44-47 fps however I am sure the final release will be more optimized also I did have everything turned up and playing in 4K. The return to point and click is a relief and playing was intuitive. The camera angles/viewers angles were still a little frustrating I really wish when I hold down the left click button to look around it would stay where I am looking instead of snapping back to center position. The scene with the automatons and the piano in the park reminded me of the first two games and why I loved them so much!! I am very excited for the full game and can't wait to play it.

There is no reason to not recommend this free prologue to anyone trying to figure out whether they want to play a full game or not. As for my personal opinion, I found the story intriguing but not really thrilling and captivating. Well, I must say first that I didn't play any previous Syberia games. It's not my favorite genre although I like story-rich games that can be perceived as interactive CG movies regardless of genre. I also enjoy steampunk themes. Still, this game didn't hook me. I have only few minor complaints about the game itself though. It seems to be well designed, and the story feels dramatic. But I'll pass.

This is somewow sad and embarassing.
How can someone create such a beautiful ane elegant character and TOTALLY DESTROYING IT for the sake of modern clichè and easy kid selling.
Just one question: WHY THE F U C K??
Someone please stop Benoit Sokal from ruining all his previous gems.

THIS IS NOT KATE WALKER FOR CHRIST SAKE!

This is just copying the characters of the best selling adventure game around just to sell yourself more!

First Syberia 3 with Lara Croft lookalike.
And NOW, OMG, now we have CHLOE PRICE from Life is Strange!

OOOH FOR F U C K SAKE PLEASE!
They even put the BLUE HAIR on her! Just to not let some kid be confused about!
Transforming an elegant lawyer with her unique style in a punk-rock rebel lesbian is pure is pure horse s.h.i.t.

Oh, and btw, the game is just s.h.i.t. aswell. It's basically a movie with barely some kind of TOTALLY USELESS interaction (SEARCHING FOR A PEN IN THE DRAWERS?? SERIOUSLY?)
Graphically seems for 10 years ago at best and technically optimized with the ass.
It freezer randomly and gets ages to load while freezing of course.

Unbelievable, this is just ugly, sad, depressive unbelievable.
It's like crushing a beautiful childhood dream or burning the pictures of your memories.

It's just painful to watch and I'm so disappointed and angry i would like to post like 10k reviews only with insults to Benoit Sokal.
I hope all the worst possible to this [strike]game[/strike] massivepileofhorseshit.

Run quite badly on my rig. 30 fps on 1920x1080 and graphics details set to low on a gtx 1080 at 100% workload. Seems poorly optimised. Had the same with Syberia 3.
But more importantly: Why did they make Kate look like Cristiano Ronaldo?

A prologue game's...prologue!

Syberia: The World Before - Prologue is apparently a prologue to the Syberia trilogy, a series that launched roughly 18 years ago. While I don't know much about the trilogy itself other than what this prologue has shown, I found that this follows two narratives that tell a story...of course, I cannot see exactly how the two stories are truly tied given their current state and my current knowledge of the series.

You follow both a girl who yearns to be a pianist in a steampunk German society (mostly considering WW2 parallels) and a modern punk lesbian who had run away from home and has been imprisoned in a mine. Both have their own stories and both with their own casts and differences in personality. The former has a saturated world to live in with tensions lingering in the air and the latter has an unsaturated world to live in with tensions all around.

While this project was entertaining and the characters somewhat interesting, the problem (to me) was how the performance wasn't great on my machine, even on the lowest settings. The game is automatically set to the highest settings and the lag is great. Especially to the point where I cannot see where my mouse is on the screen. The controls with the point-and-click elements also felt clunky because my machine kept trying to process everything before registering my command...if it registered. The areas where you have to drag the mouse to the dialogue choices felt very much clunky as I had to try forcing the mouse cursor to interact with the choice I wanted. All this aside, I liked the presentation of the scenario with the graphics and the music.

Would I recommend Syberia: The World Before - Prologue? Of course...however, I would not recommend it to people with the quality of my computer or lower. While I do not doubt that it's a good game, my machine simply does not like it as of this writing. I would recommend trying to pick it up, but if you have a lower end computer, you may end up having a lesser experience than you'd hoped due to technical difficulties.

6/10 Short, but not fit for lower end computers, even on the lowest settings.

Needs lots of optimization and proper graphic options. Nobody cares about a simple configuration of low, med and high in this day and age. I get it, it's a console optimized game, with controls best for gamepad (just like Syberia 3 and just like 3 the animations still stutter when you use a joypad) but you got to think your pc gamers too. You know, the people that still play this series since 2005 or something?

Other than that, great graphics, lovely music, exciting possibilities. And the people who cry about a queer Kate Walker, cry me a river ffs.

Hope the writers know to write a queer story without killing a love interest but I'm talking to an empty hall, she is already dead ain't she? God damned people...

It is the nostalgia for the Beauty of Syberia 1 and 2 that makes us want more. The 1937 scene in the square was beautiful, but the other scenes testify to where Benoit Sokal is going with the game. Having played both Amerzone and Paradise Lost, it is clear he is more into the dark side of things. If you played both through to their endings you know what I am talking about. Kate Walker was a fully developed and wonderful strong, intelligent, and realistic female character and they have completely changed her to follow the current trends. This was not needed nor wanted. If this was a dark remake of the origin story for Batwoman, I would accept it, but Kate Walker is not that character. Not all stories have to be violence, and utter misery, this is what they failed to realize was the charm of the original 2. I don't speak for anyone else but what I could use now is a quest filled with hope and beauty.

It is sad for me to write this, but in its current state, I would not recommend this game. It's nice that they gave us the Prologue to try for free, and the story looks like it could be interesting, although Kate's changes are a little odd - it's yet another game that has decided to make sexuality of the character a 'thing', whereas before it never mattered. I'm totally fine with gay and lesbian characters in games, films, and series, with some of them being favourites of mine in certain series, but I think long term established characters should be left as they are, not altered to fit whatever the current trend is.

The key thing I found poor about this game, though, was the performance, which even on low, was terrible on my 1060 6GB (The recommended card!!). God knows how bad it must be on the the minimum spec given. It also nearly crashed at one point while loading, and I had to alt tab out to make sure it was still working - it would constantly freeze then unfreeze. The mouse movement when unlocking the carriage was poorly done too, I tried everything logical but it still didn't seem to want to progress, and took a second attempt at actually getting the arrow bar fully filled before it actually worked. Then there was the comical opening of the carriage doors where Kate constantly falls down every time you move it a tiny amount, until it is fully opened.

I hope they fix the bugs and performance issues in the full game, as I can live with the character changes, despite them, quite literally, being out of character, but for now I think it needs a bit more work.

I still don't understand how could this series go south so badly and so out of nowhere. I loved Syberia with all my heart, I was completely fascinated with the first one - I played it over and over. Kate Walker was so brave and strong and witty and charming and then there was beloved Oscar and there was this beautiful steampunk fairy tale with amazing rainy cities and intricate automatons.

And now there's this. Whatever the fuck this is. It started with Syberia 3, a game that looks as if belongs in 2002, moves as if it belongs in 1994 and feels like a sad spin off of the first two games. But hey, at least we still had Kate Walker. I mean yeah, the story was shit, it lacked continuation, it lacked the magic of the first two, but there was hope for the future because we still had our hero.

But what the actual fuck is this?

Kate Walker no longer looks like Kate Walker - in fact, I'm pretty sure that's a Madmax character. Like...literally nothing that even remotely resembles the appearance of the original Kate.

Where's her charming, charismatic, witty personality? Yes, I guess prison and forced labor can suck the life out of you, but it doesn't seem in any way that this is the focus of the game. It feels like they're trying to sell an entirely new character under the same name. Excuse me?

And the huge slap in the face. Come on everyone, hop on the SJW wagon!
Oh no, it's 2020 and we don't have a gay character yet.
Hold my god damn edibles, I have an idea.

What's with this trend of ruining the entire history of a character just to make it appeal to some new public? Hell yeah, I'm all for gay characters. What I'm not for is raising a character as straight with absolutely no reference of them being otherwise and, one day, just completely turning things around. Holy shit, nobody even cared about Kate's sexuality before - all the game said was 'omg she had a fiance, bad boy, Kate Walker strong and determined, heck ya'. And, I swear, we were all happy with it.

Please, make sure to also bring in some political bullshit, I was desperately craving for it. Don't we all love it when our magical, mystical, dream land becomes all political and omg Russians are so bad, let us quickly reference some Nazis as well - we will surely impress everyone.

Is North Korea ready for the plot twist? *hits blunts* They get out of that tunnel and realize they're actually in NK not Russia omfg this will be mindblowing olivia my dear write this down ktnxbye

Okay, story aside, 'cause it's super shitty. The game looks okay. Moves like an absolute ass - had to lower the graphics so that it doesn't lag constantly. Glad they dropped the 3D bs, but they just left us with this 2D - 3D hybrid that's very awkward to control and navigate - it's extremely out of place for 2020.

WHERE ARE THE PUZZLES? How did I play one hour of this game without having to solve one puzzle? And don't tell me those were puzzles, pls. Have the decency not to.

Devs - when you're working on the 4th installment of a game and you want to please a new generation, make sure you don't take a massive shit on the previous gen of players who loved your games since the very beginning. If your game was so successful once, it was successful for a reason. If all you wanted was to appeal to today's standards, you could've created a new game, no hard feelings. I would've rather seen the series abandoned than completely destroyed...

Walking by using the keyboard is gone, the camera angles are fixed once again and the interaction indicators are clear as day. It's hella obvious, that Microids learned from their mistakes in Syberia III and this project, even though there was not much material to judge it by, has a very good chance, of living up to its legacy. Well, I played through the Prologue and from what I saw,I can only hope that the main game will continue as well. I love the game's incredible attention to detail, the convincing animations, the opulent graphics - everything is wonderful.
What I also really like is the slow, deliberate way of telling the story. You get the impression that a big story slowly builds up. (It's almost like cinema, only better. )
The surreal aspect of the game is also particularly noteworthy: The setting works like a kind of romanticized parallel universe of our own world, full of fascinating automatons and full of poetic and sad beauty. Excellent. 10/10

To be honest, I was sceptical at first, but in the end demo turned out to be quite interesting. Totally loved alternate Austria of 1937, and Dana’s side of the story, the world she lives in brings back the charm of the first game, and she makes an endearing character. Kate’s side of the story seems dark, but it only makes sense given all she went through, and so far I really like how it connects with the past in small details, like mechanical bird or paintings in the train. Exploring the train and the tunnels also was fun, hope to see more of that. Anyway, really looking forward to the full game now.

After a disappointing experience with Syberia 3, the prologue of the new instalment offers hope that not all is yet lost. I admit that I am still not convinced whether the new grim reality kind of story fits this series - Syberia 1 and 2 were light hearted adventures (with some bitter stuff along the way I admit, but never really fleshed out), Syberia 3 went to some weird places unfortunately, a turn for the worse. Here, however there is still some potential to achieve a kind of balance between the cheerfulness and grim aspects of the story itself. Other than the story there are some technical aspects, mostly facial animations, that need some work – and knowing the reality I don’t really expect that to be fixed. But other than that it’s still a solid foundation for a complete game in the future.

Review brought to you by:

TentacleBunny's Cozy Cottage

Syberia has clearly been one of the most popular and beloved franchises among Point & Click fans, as well as anyone who enjoys an immersive adventure. The third game, released back in 2017 wasn’t that well received due to its gameplay mechanics, and I actually thought it would make the series fall into oblivion.

Surprisingly, Microids announced on their Social Media channels a new upcoming title, and not so long after, a Prologue demo has arrived. Although it does not fully reflect what might be the final product, we may end up having some clues of what awaits us in terms of gameplay mechanics and narrative, not to mention the visual presentation.

Syberia: The World Before starts right after the end of Syberia 3, pushing the storyline one chapter ahead, but there’s also a different timeline at play. It’s 1937 and we’re in the shoes of young Dana Rose, a talented young woman who’s about to complete her final exam at the music academy.

For classic enthusiasts of the two original games, it’s well known that Syberia created a universe of its own, with original locations and characters. However, when playing as Dana a few things stand out. Apparently, she is a Vageran, and like many others, are being slowly oppressed by a fascist group named The National Socialist Party of Osterthal, or also known as “Black Shadow”.

I don’t need to mention anything else, as we all see where this is going. I believe this is one of the reasons why so many Steam users are criticizing the game’s plot, and for good reason. Not that is contextually wrong of course, it’s just that at this point, it’s beating a dead horse. Like my friend says “When Developers don’t know what to do, they add nazis, or zombies. Sometimes both.

Back to the 2004 timeline, we finally play as Kate Walker, who is undoubtedly unrecognizable. Taken to be a slave by a still active group of fascists in the salt mines somewhere in Syberia, our beloved protagonist now digs for ivory in hopes to one day escape such torment. With her, a new character is introduced, named Katyusha, an equally enslaved young woman whose dreams of escaping are only matched by her despair.

Playing with both characters will let us explore bits of information about the world lore, although it’s still vague, we can already assume they are tangled together, despite the different timelines. When it comes to this narrative, it will most likely turn out to be a good mix, as it’s already pleasant in this Prologue.

Thankfully the gameplay has improved tremendously from the previous installment. It’s still a traditional Point & Click, but this time with a semi-fixed camera. It’s not fixed as the first two games, since it allows players to slightly move each scene a little to help exploration, and the camera follows characters in a dynamic overview. It’s by far an improvement, but still not as fluid as one would wish.

I understand that going back to fixed cameras may not be a modern approach, but I also hope till the end of the final game, the studio manages to polish the game even more, so characters feel more fluid when walking. That is pretty much the only feature that's in need of improvement. Some other mechanics included aim to deliver a much interactive experience, which is fine by me.

There’s a present vibe of the original design at work, one that can easily be seen during the segment where Dana plays her piano concert, accompanied by automatons in a beautiful sequence of melodies and mechanical enthusiasm. This felt like a love letter to the fans, and I genuinely got chills down my body. This is what we love, a Benoît Sokal’s design with the modern refinement of technology to deliver authentic and genuine scenes.

Both worlds have a strong contrast but are symbolically identical. While Dana is in a beautiful, charming town, it’s just like Kate, oppressed by a shadow, the same shadow through different times. A remarkable representation taking in consideration the meaning and design.

Both locations are in their own way, beautiful to look at. Vaghen reminds me of a golden city, with beautiful sunlight, charming cozy houses, familiar neighbors and just a rustic little town with an idyllic atmosphere. The mines on the other hand, are dark, bleak and lack any positive vibe, but still, fantastically well designed with shadows and reflections.

Character design is a very Hit-or-Miss situation. Dana looks beautiful, but why is Kate so stylish? I personally don’t understand how slaves forced to work in the mines can access make-up, hairstyles, and cool clothes. It just doesn’t add up, and feels like it was forcefully placed to deliver a cool look on purpose.

I believe many of the common opinions on the web reinforce my thoughts, in which the new style for Kate is unfitting. Unless this is Syberia 2077, there could have been better styles, especially when considered how everything else looks absolutely gorgeous.

The soundtrack seems once again preparing itself to become a reference OST among fans and everyone else who really likes a classical tune, with a strong selection of ambient and symphonic tracks. I can only hope the good taste in music keeps on active for the upcoming full game, and something tells me it will be even better.

When it comes to optimization, the developers released an update which improved it, but we’re still limited in settings. Quality goes from Low to High, and that’s about it. As if it wasn't strange enough to be developed on Unity, (Although when well optimized it can be a quite powerful engine) basic lighting, shadows, and other optional screen effects such as chromatic aberration can’t be turned off. All of these affect the performance, but alas, we cannot change anything.

All in all this Prologue is a very pleasant game, it adds a lot of interesting things and a fantastic atmosphere, unfortunately it dives into already overly explored themes. Other than that it does indeed look promising, and I for one can't wait for the final game.

Although I am excited about the new Syberia game, I definitely didn't like what I had seen in the demo.

First of all, even though I did like the visuals, I think using Unity was a bad decision. They should have opted for something like the Unreal Engine. Although I personally know several people using Unity for development and heard praise on how easy it is to work with, I had never ever seen a game running on this engine that worked smoothly. Just like most of the other Unity games I had played, this one suffers from atrociously long loading times (and it's not the case of one loading at the beginning of the game, the loading screens are a-plenty even in the scope of the demo). Not only that, there are frequent jerks (severe frame drops) when a camera angle changes. Mind that I was running that game on a very decent rig that can handle pretty much every modern game at maximum settings and at 60 FPS.

Now onto the gameplay itself - the demo is filled with a ridiculous amount of drag-the-mouse-to-move-some-object or click-the-mouse-button-repeatedly to do something (chip at the wall with a pickaxe, say). I really don't see how this is necessary, it certainly did not add any level of immersion for me, and I would love to see literally all of such interactions I had seen in course of the demo to be automated. Other than that, there wasn't much to do - no interesting puzzles, involving objects or dialog options, it seemed extremely simple and uninvolving.

But, I did like the world and am curious about the story.

This is incredible. Really impressed by the visuals. Wasn't expecting this at all. With this technology devs would develop visual style and design way further than before. Can't wait for the full game. If the whole game will be with this attention to the details and overall visual quality it'll be epic! Be great if ratracing lighting and reflections will be implemented in some ways. Noticed some cool reflections that already in this demo on some objects. Looks really close to raytraced ones.

Facial animations needs some love in cinematics. Proper ultrawide support. As right now it works fine but with some bugs like not being able to select proper resolution after changing it. was playing 16:9 first few locations then it got switched to 21:9 automatically during loading screen.

I'm playing with 3440x1440 res with RTX 3090 and generally fps are good but there were a few places where it was going below 60 which is insane plus some occasional major stutters when camera is switching. Can't imagine what other guys with weaker GPU are experiencing. So performance improvements definitely need to be done.

Please polish this game as much as possible. I feel something great awaits us here!

A good start. Nice overhaul gfx/audio improvements compared to previous chapters.

Requires just some tech minor fixes:
a few fps drops: looks like it plays at 30fps in a pair of situations only. Runs smoothly for the rest.
A few small freezes here and there (bad assets streaming/loading not async'ed?).

The first half of the demo with Dana is the only good thing in this game. Nice character, story with potential, favorite mechanisms , city of indescribable beauty and comfort.
As for the part with Kate, it is the worst nightmare of any person who has previously played the series. The image of the personage has been perverted to match modern youth trends. Kate is now a blue haired tomboy, with a straight edge cross on her back, and possibly... a lesbian? Come to your senses. Is she 13 years old? Microids, you still have time to fix this. Return the old Kate or cut her character from the game and replace to a new one.
It is not clear who you want to please with the new part of the game. Many players have got used to the old characters and will not accept such drastic and illogical changes. And as for the new players? С'mon guys, it's 2020. Who, apart from the old people, needs quests in 2020?

Nice art and aesthetic design but the story and characters are a cliche ridden mess. Cool mechanical piano concert scene though.

Check it out if you are a fan of the series and decide for yourself if you want to get excited for the full game release. I have no prior experience with the previous games to get me nostalgic for more.

If this is what's in store for the next game in the series, it does not bode well.
It's baffling to me that this (for all intents and purposes) demo got released in this state. There is no reason for it to boast the system requirements that it does, it is after all a linear game that only requires one room, or hallway to be loaded in at a time. And it can't even pull that off. Every dialogue- or cutscene has missing backgrounds or skyboxes, as if it has to load those things in separately every time the camera changes. You'll be staring into the void for half the game at this rate.
The UI is, again, optimized for consoles which makes playing it with the mouse annoying. It also added QTE's for the most mundane things, because that makes it more engaging and not annoying at all, right? /sarcasm
Other new additions include dialogue options that I doubt will have much effect storywise at all, and time based events, because why would you want to go exploring anyway, right?

The one thing I will give this game is that it started things off with a large automaton display, coupled with a great musical score. Which was a welcome return to form. Too bad half of it was pitch black due to missing skyboxes.

This is not a good advertisement for the next game, if this is anything to go by. It's terribly optimized, it looks broken, textures are muddy, and it doesn't feel good to play due to a UI that prioritizes console players over PC players.
I wouldn't hold my breath for the full game.
