As a huge fan of the Talisman tabletop/boardgame and the digital edition here on Steam as well, I had to get this. And yes, it is very entertaining with RPG elements, storylines to follow and a bunch of more or less challenging quests. The UI is much prettier than in the digital edition version and I wouldn't mind RPG elements like those here for every other version of the game. The only setback for me is that it is somehow limited in regard to which characters you get to play. Also, the board can not be customized with extra rules etc., making the experience a bit linear at times. Overall impression is very good: it's engaging, it's nostalgic and most of all fun.

As much as I love the original Talisman game ... this one has some bugs that are quite annoying. 2 hours into a campaign and then it just crashes. No file save option. All progress lost. I think I got better things to do with my time. Sorry

This should more accurately be called Talisman - The Grind.

It's like normal Talisman but with less fun and it takes significantly longer than the standard game to level up enough in order to finish each quest as they are presented. I get the story mode, without it it would be as pointless as it seems endless. Anger management pro skills are very beneficial. Of course I'll keep playing it because I'm a sucker for those steam achievements. Otherwise it might just be wiser to stick with the main (multiplayer) version of this game, play the AI and maybe use runestones, which this grind version doesn't allow, and enjoy a far more casual and pleasant gameplay. Unless, of course, you're a glutton for punishment or just really, really, *REALLY* bored.

The only reason to play Talisman is to laugh at the misfortune of the other players. This game removes that element and replaces it with a bunch of quests for you to achieve while playing solo. If you love Talisman I suppose you might enjoy this. For me, it is tedious, boring, and takes way too long.

This is not the original Talisman game where you can choose characters and board expansions but a series of rigid scenarios where those choices are fixed. It seems like they tried to emulate a role playing game using a Talisman board, but the resulting RPG is too linear and monotonous. The quests/challenges/achievements add very little to the game and do not compensate for the lack of flexibility. If you want to play Talisman, the digital edition is probably a wiser purchase.

The thing i loved about this game is that it as a i went through each and every non DLC level it kept morphing and changing constantly. I rarely knew what to expect and after playing for an entire 31 hours i still strongly believe there are a boat load of monsters, items, and trinkets that i have not even come close to interacting with. If you have plenty of time on your hands and especially if you are just wanting a break from the constant stream of pvp or action games i would definitely recommend this for you.

Have you ever played chess puzzles? This game is similar, with solo adventures and objectives that flesh out the backstories of (of all things) board elements, characters, and cards.

I found it way more fun than anticipated.

If you want a fully fledged single player Talisman / board game experience to keep you for hours on end, this is the game.

Pros:
+Revamped UI with more information for the player.
+Story unfolds via Chapters (New scenarios per chapter) and also in-game (new evolving quest-lines to complete), creating an engaging end goal for the players to achieve whilst in a Talisman board game environment.
+Chapters are introduced in tandem with the mechanics of the game, creating a good learning curve as the story progresses. This also means that each scenario offers a fresh take on the game from the perspective of a different protagonist or even antagonist.
+Great flow as your turn comes up pretty fast (In comparison to Talisman: Digital Edition Multiplayer where there is a bit of downtime while waiting for your turn).
+New Soundtrack creates a sense of urgency and grandiose (The music from Talisman: Digital Edition is fine, but does get a little stale).

Neutral:
*While Talisman: Digital Edition has very high replay-value, the playthrough of Talisman: Origins is more geared towards a single experience. However, the length of the game is indeed long as each Story contains a few chapters to complete. There are a few hidden objectives that will be revealed once you have successfully completed a story for added replayability for those that are looking for achievements.

Cons:
*At the end of the day, It is still very similar to Talisman: Digital Edition and you might want to own either one or the other based on the type of experience you are looking for. If you want to play with friends, get Talisman: Digital Edition. If you want to play a solid single player board game, this is the definite version to go for.

Written for 1561's Thoughts - Honest reviews, for busy people.

Talisman: Origins is a frustratingly difficult board game where you life depends on the dice you roll and the cards you draw. It's not my type of game but I can see the appeal for tabletop fans. 6/10

I worked for Games Workshop when the original board game was in development, and was one of the playtesters. Like 'the digital edition', this version is a sound implementation of the original. Unlike 'the digital edition', it plays very smoothly. The downside is that it's single player only.

A fantastic upgrade to the original Talisman Prologue. It adds in additional character stories with actual bit plot lines this time. Sadly, some are DLC, but certainly worth getting once one has enough cash for them. Anyone who enjoyed Talisman Prologue owe it to themselves to give this one a go.

A solo approach to the Talisman boardgame.

I did not play that much yet, but had to buy the game because I simply love it(still have my original 2nd Edition boxes lying here).

The gameplay is okay, but nothing special ... You get some quests, and as in every Talisman game alot of it depends on RNG and luck. If you cannot handle that, best stay clear :) Also the AI seems more brutal then in the digital edition, I got my *ss kicked in the tutorial lol :)

If you are a fan and want a lighter version instead of waiting 5 to 6 hours for one game to finish (when playing with other people and expansions), you can try this out.

Recommended for fans of the boardgame.

Zitat:

Talisman: Origins takes the story behind the Talisman board game through single-player campaigns using quests and challenges. The game is rather confusing to a beginner player of the board game, that's for sure. I had very little experience with the board game, and so I worked my way through the tutorial before embarking on the adventures available.

There are two tutorials, a basic one and an advanced one. If you are new to the board game, I think that you should make your way through the first tutorial, start but not finish the second (advanced) tutorial, before heading into the main adventures. The first tutorial lasted about 1/2 hour or so, the advanced tutorial took me about 2.5 hours. Sure, you will learn plenty more by playing through the tutorial, but most of that learning is from playing, and not really being handed the information. At the end of the day, the adventure mode is perhaps a bit more involved and fun.

The other beef I have with the tutorial is that you can die with a few poor decisions. For the seasoned Talisman player, this is not a big deal, because you will not be making those kinds of simple mistakes. For me, struggling to stay alive during the tutorial is a bit discouraging as a new player to the game. Nevertheless, I persevered and slogged on and somehow managed to make my way through. But I can see how the tutorial might be enough to drive some other players to drink.

Now I am onto the adventure mode, and I have moved past a couple of chapters in the Great Wizard saga, and I have to say, I am having a blast. Most of the learning does happen as you spend more time with the game, whether it be this version in the single-player story modes or if you play the original Talisman board or digital games. Be prepared to sink a lot of hours, and I mean, a lot of hours, because this could easily be the next game that totally sucks you in for days, months, on end.

I think that the complexity of the rules and all of the different things that could happen is really great to see in this game, even without human opponents or AI opponents to sit across the board from you, there are still plenty of AI NPCs that have unique playing nature and strategies that they will give you plenty of exciting gameplay.

The best part of this game is the quests that you are given in each chapter as the main goal for story progression. It really adds substance to that single-player board game element. On top of that, after you clear the main quest, you will unlock several new challenges for that chapter so that there's plenty of replay value to try to go after those challenges. (I only wish that the challenges were displayed as optional objectives from the beginning, because in my first two chapters in the Great Wizard story, I have done multiple of the side challenges, but did not get acknowledgement for them because they were not yet unlocked.)

It is important to note that no matter how much you buff up your character in the story quests, when you progress to a new chapter, everything resets. So if you have what it takes to complete a quest, there is no reason to dilly-dally, because getting more stat boosts will mean nothing when it comes to the next chapter.

Initially I felt that the game was controlling me, because I felt that nothing was up to me, the RNG in the dice rolls really determined everything that was going on. That was until I learned the board spaces, learned some new cards, objects, followers and their special abilities that allowed me to feel more empowered to play the game in a way I felt comfortable with. Sure there are unexpected occurrences, such as when a card came along that made me lose all of my followers. It was a gut-wrenching experience that I had to remind myself that everything was going to be okay, that the heartache would eventually pass.

It is really nice that you can just quit the game any time and anywhere, the game will automatically save. When you start back on the same chapter, you will have the option of starting where you left off or starting that chapter anew.

Controls

Mouse only, please keep in mind that you can use the scroll-wheel on the mouse to zoom into the board. You don't have to stare at the spaces from a much higher vantage point and not know what the art looks like.

Graphics

It's a board game with cards, it's nothing fancy, but the artwork is definitely nice.

Music

Tension-filled music is how I would describe the soundtrack. It is not intrusive and you can mute it to listen to your own music should you wish.

Audience

I do like that they are making such a good effort in generating a good single-player experience out of what is a primarily multiplayer board game. Targeted audience are the single-player board game enthusiasts and also fans of the original game.

Pricing

There are definitely enough hours of content in the base game to warrant $6.99 USD base price. We will have to wait to see how many DLCs will eventually be available. Currently there is only one.

Conclusion

Talisman: Origins is a very much worthy single-player adaptation of the board game, in my opinion. Albeit you will know from reading above that I have little experience with the board game, I am having a blast with this version. The quests certainly make the single-player version of board game much more enjoyable.

The long, perhaps too long, advanced tutorial was a bit of a struggle for me as a new player, and I feel that others might have a similar experience. So please do look past it because the adventure mode and the quests are definitely worth it in the end.

I hope that the game doesn't have DLCs longer than a lot of people's Steam libraries, as Talisman: Digital Edition has. But for the base game and its asking price of $6.99, I think it's totally worth it. There are several different adventures available and enough quests and challenges to justify the price. Just know that the game will be showing you the available DLCs in-game so that you might be tempted even more, especially if you enjoy the base game. The DLCs in this game seem to be more epic adventures and more stories to unfold. Currently there is one available.

Anyway, at the end of all of my ramblings, I think you can tell, I am having a blast with this game, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys board games but who perhaps doesn't always have enough time or friends to sit down for a full game.

Wow! What a fantastic gift the makers of Talisman have given us! This takes you back to the beginning of the talisman world, with the creation of the crown of command and continues through the resulting havoc.

There are 7 books, each with about 4-5 quests, and each quest has 6-7 challenges that you can accomplish once you have completed the original quest once. It is challenging without being too hard and going for the challenges can take some time and replays of each quest. Also, there is indication that there will be more content added in the future.

So far I am on the 5th book and have thoroughly enjoyed the game. This is a single-player game, but occasionally the AI pops up to give you a bit of a challenge.

Some faults with the game include slow AI action time (roll the dice already!), having to prolong a quest to find the right cards to meet a challenge, [strike]and not being able to restart a quest if you have made a mistake (you have to kill yourself to get out of an on-going quest). [/strike] edited to take out that last bit - there is a restart button on lower right of page.

But warts and all the game is definitely worth the $6.99 I paid for it. I'm still enjoying it and with more content upcoming, I am thrilled.
Definitely recommend!

Basically this is Talisman Prologue but with much more bells and whistles. No longer feeling like a overblown demo for Talisman: Digital, we finally have a campaign system for a wonderful game. If they say you get a dollar an hours worth for a good game, then thousands of hours in Talisman would say that when I say this good, i mean it.
