Über das Spiel

In The Cat and the Coup, you play the cat of Dr. Mohammed Mossadegh, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of Iran. During the summer of 1953, the CIA engineered a coup to bring about his downfall. As a player, you coax Mossadegh back through significant events of his life by knocking objects off shelves, scattering his papers, and scratching him.

The game, situated within the traditions of Persian miniature art form and cold war foreign policy, asks players to consider their connection to Iranian history. The Cat and the Coup is both about the relationship between the Western video game player and Mossadegh and, by extension, the United States and Iran. It lays a foundation for today?s critical question -- how do the people know when their democracy is threatened?

Very brief game, dedicated to a short small bit of history of British and American imperialism in Persia (now modern-day Iran.) The final days of Mosaddegh's life, along with outside influence. Despite this being a very old game - a freeware game specifically - it was more of an interactive art experience, than what most would consider the average game. The accompanied visuals within this game make it a very awe-striking ordeal, yet the little mini-games that are packed within this felt a little tedious, especially when it's a repeated loop of a black cat prancing around the same room over and over.

However, it should be written down this is a college game developed by students at the University of Southern California, as mentioned in the credits of this game. There is an embedded view of showcasing the tragic history of British imperialism, so there is the basis of that. Though I do feel, they could've showcased it in a much clearer form, than speech bubbles showing events of what had occurred history. And this is something more to do with how writers usually try to epitomize a viewpoint or theme, yet they could always better elaborate more than what so and so has gone. Symbolism is a beautiful two-handed sword, and it's clearly depicted they could be forwarding it better.

Overall, it's a college project, and an amateur yet potential-showing one at that. Despite it being clunky and a rigid confusion at times. I can't dislike it, yet I wouldn't recommend it. You're better off watching someone playing this, and viewing someone with much more information explaining the game, than playing it yourself.

The free and very short documentary puzzle game The Cat and the Coup is a gem that i find myself returning to after few years of time away as it simply is such an unique and charming experience in its approach of serious matters of political events that still marks the world of present day.

The game puts you in the role of the cat of the Prime Minister of Iran, Mohammed Mossadegh while the historical events unfolds and his subsequent downfall through a CIA and MI6 engineered coup during the 1950ies which further bricks the road for the eventual iranian revolution two and a half decade later.

The visual style is a mix of persian art, cartoon drawings, real photos and texts explaining on the political events. This all adds up to a fairly surreal but engaging lesson that nobody should cheat themselves of.

The games soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and sets the mood well.

As i mentioned its a pretty short experience as it propably can be completed in less than 10 minutes if rushed through but nevertheless left a lasting imprint with me.

Blood & oil , Americans e Brits take the profit e becoming more & more rich/ power.

The nationalization of Iranian oil has led to an enrichment of the aforementioned foreign countries, but in Iran only the Shah's Monarchy and his court have gained (probably no more than 5% of the population).

BTW
Nice short story game

Not really a game, but rather an interactive story that provides the highlights of the Iranian Coup of 1953.

I hope that one day Iran (Persia) can become the land Dr. Mohammad Mosaddegh envisioned--a secular, democratic nation that cares for its people and is free of foreign interference.

Another small game which wasn't always free, The Cat and the Coup is more an interactive story about the political life of Mohammad Mosaddegh up to his death, incluing the 1953 Iranian coup d'état.
Don't play it for the gameplay, which consists in small puzzles to lead to the next bit, but you should definitely have a look at the art style which is pretty amazing.

This cat pooped in my soup!

The Cat and the Coup is a weird artistic game that tells of Iranian history...and as an outsider, I have no idea what it's really talking about. It's a weird collage of images in a single setting with what appears to be propaganda imagery.

The gameplay is a simple puzzle game that should not take you more than 10-15 minutes to complete. Each area is basically an Escape Room, except without any danger or time limit. Just simple solutions you need to figure out.

I don't like the music nor the imagery and I find the story completely confusing. That said, I honestly did not enjoy The Cat and the Coup. I'd rather play a different game and only got this namely because I heard it was short and easy. What the reviews failed to tell me is that it's also boring and ugly to both look at and listen to. While it has no bugs and is finishable, I cannot think of any real reason to play this game unless you're just completely bored and want to experience a short game.

1/10 Don't be a dupe, just say noop!

Very unique experience. Short, but take it as an Iran History class for free, with beautiful art direction and a good music in the background. Iran (and Persia, for that matter) is full of History, so it's worth it.

This short game is quite the experience. Its beautiful use of collages of miniature paintings, photographs, and more acts as a visually captivating backdrop to a brief introduction of a sequence of events in modern Iranian history. And you get to play a mischievous cat. Overall, a great way to spend 10-30 minutes.

More of an intricate piece of artwork with simple puzzles than a game. You, a cat, solve puzzles to progress into the story of the Irani Revolution: Dr. Mossadegh's rise and his eventual downfall.
This is honestly such a short, well-made, piece of historical art backed up by amazing visuals. If you like history and art, this is for you.

- Mesmerizing collage of illustrations
- Creative narrative design
- Lots of symbolism, metaphors, and historical and social references

- The text is hard to read, and the visual composition is suffocated with meticulous details to the point you are not sure where to look and what to read
- The timeline is backwards and confusing, making it hard to follow the chain of events and their order in your first playthrough
- The cat's animations looks rough around the edges, making the controls feel a bit clunky

Free, 10-15 minutes of gameplay, begs to be played multiple times, definitely a lot of thought behind its design

It's a free game that teaches you how Iran went from a democracy to a monarchy in 1953.
It takes less time to finish this game than it does to finish a Netflix/anime episode.
It's pretty.

In 2020, it is highly relevant. Give the game a chance, learn some history.

Many reviewers here say that this game is about the Iranian Revolution. It's not. However, it's related to it, because the historical events described in The Cat and the Coup preceded the revolution and were the direct cause of all the social tension that broke out in the late seventies.

This game is a beautiful poetic reflection on the failed attempt of Iranian prime minister, Mohhamad Mosaddegh, to stop foreign companies' (Anglo-Persian Oil Company in particular) exploitation of Iranian oil. Mosaddegh's actions were active enough for the British to address to the Eisenhower administration for help which ended up in a CIA-assisted coup to overthrow the stubborn prime minister.

Visually, the combination of medieval Persian miniatures and the tradition of european political caricature just rocks.

No reason not to play it.

On the first layer: Wonderful visual design with a pleasant soundtrack to back it up. Every inch of this game has a vibrant aesthetic.
On the second layer: A brief history lesson on the Irani Revolution, told from a non-Western perspective, which is very rare to a Western gamer, told via the scenes themselves and the occasional snippet of newspaper in the background.
Put together: A short, but impactful, beautiful, and expertly created piece of historical art.

And it's got a kitty in it. I like kitties.
