Arrrr, hey Du da! Leichtmatrose!
Komm an Bord, hier wird vortreffliches Seemannsgarn gesponnen. Bring ne Buddel voll Rum mit und komm an Deck, wir segeln in Richtung Nostalgie Island, den Schiffsrumpf voller verklärter Erinnerungen und süß klebriger Wehmut, hach...

Dort war die Welt noch in Ordnung, der Schiffszwieback so trocken wie der Humor, es wurde gebrandschatzt, geraubt und geplündert, dass einem das schwarze Piratenherzlein aufging. Beim Klabautermann, das waren noch Zeiten, in denen echte Kerle ihren Mut noch in angemessener Form unter Beweis stellen konnten. Und zwar...
... und zwar...
... und zwar... indem sie mit ihren labberigen Puddingärmchen die Maus um die stets halb leere Chipstüte herummanövrierten, um ein zünftiges Point and Click Adventure zu lösen.
Da wurden noch echte Helden gemacht, der Rum (mit Cola) floss in Strömen und es wurde gelacht, geknobelt und gestaunt.

Gestaunt vor allem über dieses wundervolle Medium, das es möglich machte, seine eigene Geschichte zu schreiben, mit Freunden vorm Rechner zu hocken und nicht nur stumpf zu konsumieren, sondern selbst mitzumachen und die Handlung voranzutreiben.

Und Du lachst jetzt vielleicht, lieber Leser, denn mit Deinen paar Flaumflusen unterm Piratenkinn hast Du damals diese schöne neue Welt verpasst, in der Gaming noch so herrlich neu und unerschlossen war, in der sich Studios noch ganz verrückte Sachen trauen und so viel probiert wurde, dass am Ende so kleine Aminationskunstwerke wie dieses hier dabei heraus kamen.

Heutzutage wäre so ein animiertes brüllend komisches Piratenabenteuer Stoff für einen Pixar Film, damals durften wir unsere Geschichte noch hautnah erleben und selbst mithelfen, die Welt, oder zumindest unsere angebetete Elaine vor dem sicheren Untergang zu bewahren.

Die wird nämlich anfangs der Story durch einen gar schrööööcklichen Unfall mit einem ekligen Voodoo Fluch belegt und erstarrt zur Statur aus purem Gold.
Guybrush, also wir, sind vielleicht nicht ganz unschuldig an der Misere und im Grunde ging ein fast geglückter Heiratsantrag dem Unheil voraus, also muss die Gute wieder zu Fleisch und Blut verwandelt werden und wir können glücklich und zufrieden bis ans Ende unserer Tage... blablabla...

Also wird in die Hände gespuckt (Flatsch!) und nachdem Le Chuck von uns eigenhändig in einer an Kühnheit und Heldenmut kaum zu übertreffenden Wahnsinnsaktion endgültig und für immer und wirklich alle alle alle Ewigkeit besiegt wurde, haben wir dafür ja immerhin alle Zeit der Welt.

Oder etwa doch nicht?

Tja, wies so kommt, lieber Leser. Immer anders eben!
Dem Zombie Kapitän gehts leider immer noch zu gut zum endgültig tot bleiben, die Herzallerliebste wird von Gold gierigen Freibeutern geklaut und zu allem Überfluss hat Guybrush mal wieder null Ahnung und keinen Plan von irgendwas.

Was er aber hat sind unerschütterlicher Optimismus und unseren entermesserscharfen Verstand, um auch die kniffligsten Rätsel zu lösen, auch die widrigsten Umstände zu meisten und selbst die ausweglosesten Situationen irgendwie zu... ähm... entausweglosieren?

Sei es wie es sei, es wird gerätselt und gequasselt und am Ende wird schon alles gut werden.
Dass Schöpfer Ron Gilbert nicht mehr mit an Bord (haha an Bord, verstehste?) ist, merkt man allerorten, der Humor ist ein anderer und die Dialoge nicht mehr ganz so on Point.
Aber ein wahrhaft launiges Abenteuer ists dennoch geworden, die Charaktere sind die gleichen liebenswerten Deppen, die wir alle so schätzen. Die Voodoolady, Wally, Guybrush und und und benehmen sich wie immer und zaubern uns ein Lächeln nach dem anderen aufs narbenversehrte, windgegerbte Piratengesicht.

Die Rätsel schlingern wie gewohnt am Rande der Logik entlang, fallen aber nie ganz außenbords und man ein bisschen Hirnschmalz kriegt mans schon hin. Sogar ein fast tödlicher Banjo Battle steht uns bevor!

Grafik und Sound sind top, besonders die Vertonung ist wirklich wundervoll gelungen. Die Steuerung gerät etwas moderner als in den Vorgängern. Aber hey: Es ist ein Point and Click Adventure, was soll da schief gehen? (Warte mal auf Teil 4, dann sag ich Dir, was da alles schief gehen kann :-) )

Und das wäre auch heutzutage noch wirklich ein vortrefflicher Genre Vertreter, der aber nun natürlich den Sonderbonus der wunderbar rosa rot bebrillten Erinnerung spendiert bekommt und ganz weit oben auf der Nostalgie Welle schwimmt, womit er natürlich zum absoluten Meilenstein mutiert. Toll, oder?

Wenn Du´s damals selbst gezockt hast, weißt Du, was ich meine. Es passt einfach alles, man erschaudert wohlig schon bei den ersten Szenen und führt die Maus mit gänsehäutigen Händen von einem heiß geliebten Gag zum nächsten. Schöne Erinnerungen aus der guten, alten Zeit aufwärmen kann immer wieder so toll sein...

Und wenn Du wirklich ein Neuling bist, eine Landratte auf erstem Seegang in der Welt der Freibeuter und Voodoopiraten: Dann würd ich Dir erstmal die beiden ersten Teile ans Herz legen (Macht sinn, oder?), die gibts mittlerweile auch restauriert und für RTX verwöhnte Zockeräuglein halbwegs erträglich aufgehübscht. Also schnapp Dir das ganze Bundle und leg los.
Da kannst Du ein echtes Stück Gaming Geschichte nachholen und ich wünsch Dir bei jedem einzelnen Teil dieser zeitlos unvergessenen Reihe...

Sehr unterhaltsam. Die Dialoge sind sehr gut vertont und die Rätsel machen Spaß. Grafisch ist das Spiel eigentlich auch noch recht ansehnlich, da der gezeichnete Stil gut altert, nur ist die Auflösung sehr begrenzt (640x480, wenn ich mich recht entsinne). Man gewöhnt sich allerdings erstaunlich schnell daran. Alles in Allem einfach ein Klassiker, der definitiv empfehlenswert ist.

Habe das Spiel nach langer Zeit mal wieder gespielt und zum Glück nicht mehr alle Rätsel haargenau im Kopf gehabt, daher habe ich mir an manchen Stellen doch sehr den Kopf zerbrochen. Es ist das erste Spiel der Reihe, welches ich damals gespielt habe und einfach mein Favorit, da es auch viele Kindheitserinnerungen weckt.
Tolle Rätsel, super Humor und absolut für jeden, der Point&Click mag, zu empfehlen!

Kenne das Spiel von Früher und es war echt megageil.

Diese Steam-Version läuft leider auf allen PCs im Haus nur bis zu bestimmten Stellen, an denen Bugs eine Fortsetzung unmöglich machen. So fehlt ziemlich zu Beginn der Leim bei der Voodoo-Priesterin. Ein eingespieltes externes Savegame aus dem Internet. überspringt leider das ganze folgende Kapitel. Jetzt schon wieder der nächste Stolperstein: Im Hotel läßt sich der Spiegel nicht herausnehmen und im Obergeschoß kann man das Portrait nicht herauslösen. UAAAAGGGHHH !!!! Wieder alles mit Savegame überspringen will ich nicht schon wieder. So eine Sch....ande !!!!

Es ist das schönste Adventure aller Zeiten. Es ist clever. Es ist witzig. Es hat einen Charm der kaum von Spielen erreicht wird. Die Monkey Island Reihe ist eh eine Ikone der Spielwelt aber dieses letzte Point n Click Adventure ist klar der Zenit. Man kann es immer wieder spielen, sich an den witzigen Dialogen der verschiedensten Charakteren erfreuen und hat eine tolle tolle Zeit in der Karibik. Unter meinen Top 3 der besten Spiele aller Zeiten!

Daumen hoch mit etwas Bauchweh. Die Dialoge ziehen sich, aber wer es mag ... Die Grafik ist zwar, dem alter entsprechend eher schlecht, aber der Zeichenstil ist einfach toll. Die Rätsel sind oft etwas mühsam. Kleiner Tipp: manche Sachen einfach öfter probieren.
Wem der Stil gefällt, dem kann ich nur wärmstens Deponia (alle 3 Teile) und Jack Keane 1 empfehlen!!!!

Geiler Scheiß dieses Spiel. Ohne Lösung etwas schwierig zu spielen, aber dennoch ein voller Erfolg. Ich werde nur noch solche Spiele spielen, scheiß auf EgoShooter oder Sims, Farmville stinkt auch dagegen ab. Kauf mir nachher direkt ein Guybrush Threepwood Fanshirt.

Monkey island 3 ist ein echter Klassiker, keine Frage. Es ist allerdings auch einer der Klassiker, die mit der Zeit an Spielspaß eingebüßt haben. Die Comicgrafik, die Dialoge und vor allem der Soundtrack mit seinen Steeldrums sind zeitlos gut.

Über die ganzen Stärken des Spiels wird in den anderen Reviews zur Genüge geschrieben. Daher will ich hier ein wenig über die Schwächen des Spiels informieren:
Die Steuerung ist aber etwas fummelig. Man drückt die rechte Maustaste und hat erst dann drei Optionen zur Auswahl, was man machen will (meistens: benutzen/untersuchen/sprechen).
Es fehlt auch an einer Funktion, die einem die Hotspots anzeigt. Dadurch kann es sein, dass man in der Gegend umherirrt, weil man einen kleinen Gegenstand übersehen hat.
Am weitaus schlimmsten ist aber das Inventar. Man hat haufenweise Müll im Inventar, den man gar nicht mehr braucht. Manche Gegenstände bleiben dabei vom Spielbeginn (!!!) bis zum Spielende im Inventar. Gegen Ende des Spiels wusste ich auch einmal nicht, was ich machen soll. Bis ich gemerkt habe, dass mir das Spiel automatisch die zweite Seite des Inventars anzeigt. Die ganze erste Seite war voll mit Gegenständen, die aus dem letzten Kapitel übernommen wurden. Und einer davon musste benutzt werden.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist und bleibt das Spiel eine gelungene Erfahrung für alle Rätselfreunde!

Da werden Erinnerungen wach :) Doch wunder ich mich wie ich als Kind diese unlogischen Rätsel meistern konnte. Mir viel es lediglich einfach, weil ich mich noch an alles erinnern konnte, doch ohne sinnlos alles mit Allem zu kombinieren wird man mit dem reinen logischen Verstand nicht wirklich weit kommen. Grafik ist aber sehr schön und witzig ist das Spiel auch.

For people who like point and click adventure games curse of monkey island is a must by, it has humour, adventure...it is well done..the only thing really needed is prior knowledge of the story because it is the third one in the series...so know the story of 1 n 2 i would recommend.

This is actually the first game that I have played in this series of Monkey Island, it's still good over 20 years later. I especially recommend tweaking resolution with SCUMMVM, the images look great even on 4K TV.

Awsome game that brings back a lot of nostalgia. I was not a huge fan of the art style and other changes from the previous two games back in the day. But today I really appreciate it, it still looks great and the coin-system works well. Of course MI 1 and 2 are still the best.

Works out of the box (uses ScummVM). Minor annoyance: the scaling is not pixel perfect, I understand that was added in later ScummVM releases.
As for the game itself, it is one of the better Monkey Island games. Accessible and fun.

Inarguably one of the best Adventure games ever made. Humor, wit and references permeate the dialogue. Humor, eastereggs and tlc dominate the visuals. Good voice-acting and fitting music complement the whole. The Steam port doesn't do much but make the game available on modern systems, but its still more than worth playing.

This game has charming visual and nice ambient music. As usual, it is funny and immensely enjoyable. The few downside I have with the game is that it feels shorter than the previous ones and the boat/sword fighting mechanic was a bit tedious and boring. Otherwise, amazing experience once again.

The graphics still hold up today for being a game from the 90's. A lot of wacky characters, hilarious moments and it gets pretty dark. I absolutely love this game and could not recommend it enough. The Curse of Monkey Island was actually the first game I played in the series and at the time I didn't know there were 2 games that came before it. The voice acting is incredible. Can I just take a moment to gush about the music? I remember playing this game on a crude PC system in the 90's, and it was one of my first CD-ROM games. The voice actor Dominic Armato was/is just fantastic! I can't imagine ANYONE else playing the lead character Guybrush Threepwood (yeah, that is his name). A point and click game with essentially no way to die and rewards various choices by new hilariously dialog outcomes. Guybrush, Mighty Pirate (tm), is a wonderful character - an affection that can be followed through all Monkey Island (r) series of games. Using the LucasGames SCUMM (tm) engine, all that glorious 90's cartoon graphics are presented in all there earth shattering apropos! Recommended for all libraries!

The Curse of Monkey Island is the third game in the Monkey Island series.

A classic point-and-click adventure game that everyone should play at least once in their life.

The puzzles are clever & wacky and the dialogues are super hilarious.

I especially like that “insult sword fighting” is back! “You fight like a cow!”

Of all the games in this series this one will forever hold a special place in my heart. It was the first one I played and I just remember spending hours playing it. Although it didn't get an upgrade in graphics like the first two in the series I don't think it was needed. To me the graphics have held up. I found it to be a very enjoyable game both then and now.

Such an underrated game. This game is amazing. I've replayed this game like 5 times. The puzzles are cool, interesting story, cool characters, beautiful art, beautiful music, funny... so well made. Time spent on this game is inaccurate as I played this back when you had to mail in for CD's. Probably one of the best point and click adventure games ever made. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a unique take on swashbuckling pirates complete with great music and animation. In my opinion this will always be the best game in the series.

Music, voice acting, graphics, humour are top-notch. Brings so many memories of my childhood. I remember playing this with my brother (2000 or 2001) and play or watch a video about it every year. It is in my top 10 games of all time list :)

The Curse of Monkey Island is a point and click adventure and the third installment of Monkey Island series. Unlike the previous two games this one didn't get an HD remaster, yet it's graphics can hold up even by today's standard. At first it feels like this game ignores the strange ending of a previous one, but it in the end it actually tries to mend it. So, the premise of the game is simple, Guybrush proposes to Elaine with a cursed ring that turns her into a statue of gold and now he has to find the voodoo mcguffin that will save her. On his adventure he'll reunite with some of the old friends and meet some new quirky yet charismatic characters.

Pros:
+ Nice graphics and animation
+ Funny characters and dialogue
+ Great soundtrack
+ Hard mode for those seeking more challenge

Cons:
- Some of the puzzles have strange solutions
- Pixel hunting can be a pain

Overall I liked this game as much as the previous ones. So if you're into LucasArts adventure games, you probably won't be disappointed by this one.

One of the best games ever made in the point-and-click genre. This, alongside Grim Fandango, is the pinnacle of the 90s gaming and boy does it still hold up! I only had to switch the renderer to OpenGL in the SCUMMVM console and voila, a fresh coat of paint.

PLAY THIS GAME, NOW! The voice acting, the visuals, the soundtrack, the charm and sass, the humor and peril is all there. Hats off to you Mr. Guybrush!

i started off by playing escape from monkey island on ps2, and then for years i slowly play 1,2, and now this one 3 and just impressed at the humor and puzzles and ways you have to use your brain. remember think like the 90's and things will make more sense, but don't have a current mindset and the puzzles will be easier, but all in all, play it

My favorite game of all time, hands down. I play it every year or so since I first played it, probably in 2000 where I bought it at a store that sold used video games that came in CD cases (this was a 2-CD game). There is one significant problem with this game: I've been searching for its equal ever since, and I've never found it. The gentle mix of humor, of lightheartedness, challenging puzzles, voice acting by Dominic Armato, the beautiful graphics and amazing musical score... Nothing comes close. I don't think that the folks who created this knew what they were making at the time, it was just another game from LucasArts. Bill Tiller did the graphics, and there is something so soothing about the visuals. I think most importantly is the intelligence of the puzzles, where each item you get will be put to use in some creative form later on in the game in a way that makes you think about what you're doing and what is possible, but doesn't go too far in difficulty nor is it too easy, either. The fact that all of this came together in one game is truly remarkable feat.
There are some really funny stories about putting this game together from Larry Ahern and Jonathan Ackley, and I really wish that the two of them were able to come together again for a game like this.
Honestly, I've given up hope of seeing a game that is this one's equal. Most of the games that I see now, even the adventure games, are dark in tone, aggressive at some level. And when you have to split the inventories amongst multiple characters, you lose me, So, for those of us in the know, this game stands as a testament to what a game could be, and arguably should be. Even with its flaws (the final island with the Carnival of the Damned had to be cut short due to production costs and time issues, the sword-fights can become tedious), you'll probably never find a better game than this.

The graphics of this classic game really hold up well, and the comedy reminds me of when I first played this game as a teenager. The option of playing with extra puzzles or fewer is great to make the game playable many times. If you are looking to be taken on a story and adventure then I recommend this game.

It's definitly worse than the previous Monkey Island games in terms of story and puzzles, however it's still great and has the best art style and visuals of the series. Actually, it's still one of the most visually striking games ever.

Probably the best of all the point-and-click adventure games of the '90s, a genre that's now pretty much dead but was popular back then. I hadn't played it in ages but it holds up surprisingly well and it's just as fun as it was it ever was. It isn't as hard as I remembered, but then again I was very young when I played it initially. For a game that was made in 1997, the graphics and animation style still look really nice in 2020 as well, but obviously it's not in HD or anything. Recommended!

When we remember we are talking about the sequel to two of the most significant PC games of all time, The Curse of Monkey Island has a lot to live up for.

Despite having a weaker cast of characters and overall writing (part of it can be forgiven due to a key co-creator, Ron Gilbert, being absent), and a story element which might come off as a cop out to returning fans, Curse is still an incredibly funny and creative game with loads of puzzles to solve, and a 90's TV cartoon feel that is quite the appealing fit for a series that had no shame on being absolutely lacking in seriousness. Most significantly, it gave us Dominic Armato's first performance as Guybrush Threepwood, which suits the goofball, naive, completely irony-thick protagonist like a oiled glove.

A great adventure game very much worth playing.

Played this years ago and was amazed at how much I remembered..also how much I'd forgotten! Great game...wish they'd make more of this type of game these days...the humour is great and ok, the graphics aren't brilliant like they are now, but so very entertaining, great characters and great fun. If you've never played it..go on...give it a go!! You'll love it! And its not as easy as you would imagine!

Some games are just timeless. While the visual quality of the videos suffers when viewed in a larger screen, the charm of the animations is just as beautiful as it was when first released. The voice acting, story and puzzles are just top notch. This is probably tied with the first installment of the series as my favorite Monkey Island game.

One of my all time favorites. It left such an impression on me back in 1997, that I don't even pretend to be objective.

If I were to pretend a little bit, I would say the visuals look unique and cool to this day. Music didn't loose any of it's charm. As far as writing and puzzles go, both are still exceptional. Although, I do admit they feel a little less magical at certain points. There are some characters and jokes that could have been done better. And a few puzzles (a few, not many) are a bit too wacky and out of sync with (any kind of) reason. Nonetheless, The Curse of Monkey Island is still worth playing and replaying.

PS I would be excited for a remastered version, how about you?

This is my favourite Monkey Island game, which means that I would recommend it to anybody interested in PC gaming. All of the first three games have vibrancy and personality, but the Curse of Monkey Island also has an air of melancholy and sadness that's really stuck with me over the years. I'm so happy that it was eventually made available on Steam, because I really enjoyed revisiting this game and it was as good as I remember. The vivid art style is gorgeous, the soundtrack helps give the islands a sense of atmosphere (particularly on the second island you visit), and the game is packed with great dialogue filled with wit and charm.

I would say that the Monkey Island series has some of the best puzzles in games, and this one is no exception. There's even two difficulty settings. Those very experienced in adventures and point and clicks might do well to give the Mega Monkey setting a go. There are a couple of things that make this game my favourite Monkey Island game - the first is that you actually go and do a bit of pirating. You get to form a crew, take control of a ship, engage in cannon combat, and do some insult sword fighting again, which is just as fun as it was in the first game. The at-sea sequence is fairly basic and probably could be developed further, but it's still fun. The second thing that really elevates this game is that many of the side characters are hilarious and memorable. I won't give them away but the best of them you meet very early on in the game, and you get to share jokes with them throughout the rest of it.

The locations are pretty special. The maps you use to navigate them are superb and beautifully drawn. The first island has a pretty town as its focal point, and the second is imbued with a nightly ambience that along with its soundtrack made me want to stay there and take it all in. The Curse of Monkey Island is a beautiful game with great writing and puzzle design, and you should play it. No really, it's worth it just for that one character, seriously you'll love him.

Brilliant game, certainly a true classic. I first played this game back in ´99-´00 and loved the story, humor and the puzzles. The game is just as fun today as I remembered it and I revisit it regularly. The curs of Monkey island is without doubt a must play for true gamers.

Played it through once again. I grew up obsessing over this game when I got my hands on it in 1997 (played it end-to-end over 30 times). It's amazing how fun the adventure feels to this day. You can easily tell how lovingly the game's crafted; it's so loaded with content that each of its many whimsical subplots can probably make an entire main story.

It also makes me realize how low the bar has gone down for many games today. Perhaps this is partly because of technological progress that provides too many distractions away from main content. I'd like an inductive bias to enforce artists to focus on creating main content.
