The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan

Positives:

+ Fotorealistische Grafik
+ Makellose Animationen, Gesichtsmimik und Augenbewegungen
+ Wassereffekte, Regentropfen, Lichtspieglungen im Wasser
+ Gute und nie störende Kameraperspektiven
+ Komplett in Deutsch vertont(!)
+ Wechselnde Charaktere

Negatives:

Rutsch durchspielen wollte.

SPOILERFREI

So reden? Ernsthaft? Naja gut, geschenkt!

If you like games where you can decide and choose your fate, you will probably like this game as well.
Man of Medan takes some nice twists and in particular if you play it online with a friend.
I happily stabbed my bestie without knowing it and it was hilarious. Not for her though. :']
Some of the characters may not be very sympathetic at first but if you play the game, learn a bit about them and use your brain you will see why they act the way they do and then they do start growing on you.

After playing so many runs my bestie and I discovered probably all or at least most of the options and dialogues the game has to offer. The truth is; if you pay a lot attention to details you will find mistakes and continuity errors! But also let's be honest; such games are very complex and not easy to manage.
The only thing which was really annoying at some points was the controls. Those are really wonky and the camera shifts don't make it better. So I truly hope they will make some adjustments in Little Hope.
Also it would be cool if they will add the bearings/secrets screen to multiplayer as well...and maybe an option to delete save games.

Overall I still like the game very much and if I could give it a star rating it would be probably 4 out of 5.

+Super Grafik!
+Mega Soundkulisse / Musik
+Gute Spiellänge für 1 Durchgang (dank mehreren Enden hat man also viel Spaß hier :D)
+Verschiedene Endings!

A giant abandoned ship ? What could go wrong ?

Story:

In Man of Medan you play as multiple different characters which include brother Alex and Brad, brother and sister Julia and Conrad and their captain Fliss. The group of friends are out looking for a crashed World War II plane, where you encounter the location of a ship carrying something called the Manchurian gold, but soon enough your ship gets hijacked by some fishermen who want the gold for themselves, but after you wind up on the Medan you find that the ship is holding sinister secrets.

If you played the previous game by Supermassive, Until Dawn, Man of Medan is the same deal, but on a smaller scale. It's a horror movie where you and your choices drive the story into different directions and it's your choices are what are keeping the characters alive. Until Dawn really impressed me with it's story, it was the perfect mixture of cheesy and creepy, however Man of Medan is nowhere near as impressive, in fact it's more cheesy than creepy, but that's not a bad thing.

I didn't particularly care for the plot twist that happens somewhere near the game, however I did enjoy most of the game. The dialogue is both funny and a bit too on the nose, but I feel like it adds to the charm of the game which is something I really appreciate as a horror hound, however I do really have a gripe with the plot twist most of all, it feels like it lowers the risk the characters are facing.

Graphics:

Man of Medan is a decent looking game for the most part, however I do find it goes into the uncanny valley more so than Until Dawn ever did. Since The Dark Pictures games are considered budget titles instead of the triple A budget that went into Until Dawn it feels like the faces of the characters aren't as polished. Shawn Ashmore who is basically the marketing man for this game is basically spot on, but even his face sometimes does these really unrealistic motions like they are ripped out of L.A. Noire.

Other than that minor thing I found the game really good looking especially the environments. Once you step foot onto the Medan and get to explore the decrepit ship it's really awesome, especially those moments where it constantly goes from it's past and future versions.

Audio:

The soundtrack was pretty mediocre for the most part which is about the only thing I disliked about the audio design for the game. The horror ambience is decent and did it's job fine enough, however I won't remember any of the tracks long after I'm done with the game.

The voice acting however is top notch across the board. Everyone does a fantastic job and I found everyone to be likable in their own quirky ways. The actors all play into their cliches well and do a great job with their roles, especially with some of the more heavy dialogue options.

Gameplay:

Man of Medan could be easily explained as a story on wheels. It's basically a movie you watch play out, but your input once in a while will determine what story path your characters will take. Also don't let your guard down cause there are quick time events and those will often determine who will live and who will die.

It's a very simple game to pick up and play and about the only negative thing I have to say about this is sometimes the controls are a bit too wonky and with the fixed camera angles it's a fight you're going to have to conquer quite often, however it's something you can quickly get a hang off and during my second playthrough it wasn't even a problem.

Verdict:

Man of Medan was a pleasant surprise. It wasn't as good as Until Dawn was, but I still had a blast, it's a cheesy, yet fun horror romp that fills you up on the scares and an interesting plot. It's bite sized and there's plenty to see across multiple different endings and deaths. I can't wait to play the other Dark Pictures games.

Final Rating:
7.5/10

Pros:
+ Intriguing plot and great characters
+ Great voice acting
+ Plenty of great scares
+ Tons of play value

Cons:
- Soundtrack is mediocre
- Plot twist is incredibly underwhelming

Starring TV's Shawn Ashmore.

This was my first experience with the Dark Pictures Anthology and I loved it. It took four hours for my first playthrough of this branching path interactive movie-video game. I was on edge, I jumped, I was shocked by who died when, and I'm very interested in what repeated playthroughs will bring.

The graphics are solid. Runs great. No crashing here. Animations are smooth and cinematic. Navigation is ineed a bit wonky at times, but seems to be for the sake of keeping animations realistic. I'd take walking in a circle in one spot every now and then, so I can get to that item I want to examine, over arcade-y movement. That is a worthy trade for immersion, imo, and no doubt a big part of how this game sells a cinematic feel so well. The jump scares are solid. The detail of the characters and levels are fantastic. The mood is all there with the lighting. There were camera angles that I was thoroughly impressed by and had me walking back through the area just to re-experience, ha. Excellent cinematic presentation!

The gameplay is just decision making in dialog, exploration, and QTEs. Simple, and I always felt engaged. The acting and writing are good. When people aren't talking, the atmosphere is fantastic. The pacing, which is a more of a movie term but very applicable to gameplay here, feels really good. You could easily push yourself to finish a run in one sitting because it's engaging. Your choices and performance matter, but, as a horror story, there's no wrong way to play even if you hit the wrong button in a QTE. There's entertainment value in failures.
Maybe this is the movie where everyone lives, and maybe it's the movie where everyone dies? It's a ride to enjoy regardless of any regret you may have about not being ready for a QTE or feeling a dialog choice was obviously better in hindsight (This would be how the only character I wanted to live became the first to die!). And there's no way to squirm your way out of bad decisions, good decisions you didn't think through enough, or failed QTE button presses by exiting the game or going to a quick save. You're stuck with whatever happens, however it happens, and that adds to the tension and creates a unique experience! It's another aspect of this game that screams 'integrity' when it comes to its handling of the horror genre.

I liked the plot! It delivered horror variety with fitting twists and turns that were enjoyable. How you do, or don't connect with and unravel the story can greatly influence game changing decisions and this is another cool aspect of the design here.

I played alone and had a great time! After finishing it, I am really curious to play with a friend. That can no doubt only be a good experience! Even still, I'm more than happy to play through again solo! Great game!

I've read the most recent release is the best of the anthology so far, with Little Hope being the least of the releases so far. I've seen others don't like the plot of that one. I only draw attention to that to say, Man of Medan was so good, Little hope is on my buy list whether it's a dud or not. Take my money, and keep them coming!

TLDR: Must buy for horror movie enthusiasts.

When played the way the developers intended, Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is a one-of-a-kind triumph, and a shared horror experience unlike anything ever produced. It’s extremely presumptuous to ask players to buy two copies to get the full effect, but I can’t deny that it’s absolutely worth the time and expense for those who do. Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is a true evolution of the interactive movie genre, and horror fans owe it to themselves to climb aboard.

Jump scares aren't even the scariest thing in this game, SPOILER ALERT it's the god awful controls. Choices feel meaningless sometimes being something completely different to what the preview implied, the characters that don't evolve throughout the game and the QTE's can be seriously unforgiving, don't play this for achievement unless somehow you seriously ended up enjoying this questionable game.

Price wise it's a 5 hour game for £25, you can get games at the same price that are 10x longer, and yes I'm aware they are different genres. Try the demo if you aren't feeling it don't drop ANY amount of money on it.

Also: bad perspectives in third person and many choices and effects that don't make any human logic.

This game is currently in the Humble Choice for March 2022. If you are interested in the game and it's before April 5th, 2022, consider picking up the game as part of the current monthly bundle.

Man of Medan is a part of a horror series with a large focus on telling scary stories. This is made by Supermassive games who also made Until Dawn. If you don’t know those games, think of a better version of what David Cage does though with more jump scares, and that’s probably a pretty accurate representation of this. While this game is a horror game, it does appear to get that reputation more for jump scares, than anything else.

This game definitely will not appeal to everyone but I can say the graphics on this game are extremely well done. There’s also an atmospheric feeling to the parts of the game I played which makes me want to play more even if I hate the jump scares here. This studio is known for making games where your decisions matter and in this one they have an interesting system where your character traits do that successfully. There are also some couch co-op and online multiplayer options but I didn’t try them out.

Pick this up if you like a game that’s more story-based and jump scares. From what I hear this isn’t the deep horror but more a B movie style horror, but I found it interesting even as I’m not a fan of horror. With a 4 hour runtime for a single playthrough, I will likely play this before this month is out, potentially this weekend.

If you enjoyed this review or want to know what I think of other games in the bundle, check out the full review on or subscribe to my Youtube channel: https://youtu.be/5Z3fRqxBP64

This game looks great but player movement is horrendous!!! And I'm 2.5 hours in single player an encountered a game breaking bug where Fliss and Julia get stuck in a doorway in the ghost ship, which blocks your ability to proceed with the game and trying to do anything but go forward is encountered by the pirate yelling at you. There is no way to move them and a restart of the entire game is needed to continue. I googled this and found that other people have had to restart as well because of this. Oh my, save yourself the money and don't buy this game. If they can't fix this bug after this long, they don't deserve any more money. Ugh!!

Great game where the choices you make truly matter. You set sail with a few friends to go diving and things changes into life and death situations. Will all of them make it out alive? This can be played alone, with a friend online or up to 5 friends in local.

It's a cookie cutter Netflix Original Series turned into a game.

A group of well-off millenials looking to have fun exploring places they shouldn't and then bad guys show up to complicate the simplistic plot. Every cabinet you open has a jumpscare inside of it and the characters are infuriatingly incompetent at taking actions that would get them out of the situation in the first place like not taking advantage of bad guys turning their backs.

Imaging taking every overused horror movie trope and putting it into a 4 hour-long story. The game itself is rather competently made however, I didn't encounter any bugs and the performance is always smooth with decent graphics that are marred by the rustbucket setting much of the game takes place in.

This game is more in the vain of Quantic Dream games with the tank controls (I hate those), false sense of agency over the story, though it is fortunately missing the absurdist cringe that David Cage likes to shove in his games. You can tell right from the start who will die and who won't and what happens at the end.

As a part of a trilogy of which I've yet to play the other two, I guess it's not a terrible game, but it's not particularly noteworthy in any meaningful way. I think the short length complements the lack of direction as I would have a much more negative opinion had they continued to dither about doing nothing being scared by skellies, rats, and hallucinations while trying to be relatable in a way that I personally find irritating.

I'd give it a 6.5/10. If it's on sale with the bundle I'd say go for it because it is bearable, but ultimately forgettable.

QTE-based walking simulator, if it's not your cup of tea, you won't like it (probably).
Supermassive Games made a very good Until Dawn. It was a solid, thoughtful product, with original twists and cool b-movie vibe we all like to watch from time to time.
Then they decided to create an Anthology of similar, but smaller games. Like Episodes. So we get a new game in Series every 1-1.5 years.
For Man of Medan they have taken an already existing story (truth or myth - who knows? :D), added some good ingredients - and here we are.
I can say that first installment in Series is not as good as Until Dawn was.
The main annoyance here: you want to enjoy the story, you watch a scene and then.. BAM, click that button, hurry, click or character will die!
Obviously, it is much better experience to watch than play :D
This issue is fixed in later games by a warning sign of QTE type a few seconds before action is needed. But not here, unfortunately.
And another thing that sometimes make you laugh: animations, mostly facial. For the most part they are good or OK, but transitions between them can be really funny!
I liked how saving characters can sometimes be achived by NOT trying to do something ;) You will understand what I mean after finishing the story :D
Overall, there are not so many horror/spooky games of such type we can enjoy every year, so if it is your cup of tea - I can definitely recommend to play Man of Medan!

A fun cinematic game similar to the Telltale Games but with multiplayer capabilities. It was a good storyand uses interesting techniques to give the players different experiences. The quicktime events could be annoying and the controls were a bit janky at times, and towards the end of the game the scenes can get a bit incoherent as the weight of the narrative collapses under the ambitious attempt to make your choices matter, but it's an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon playing. Looking forward to trying the others.

Wow very good game its a story line game kind of like a movie i can compare it to the walking dead and the bunker and a way out and the uncertain if you played any of them games you will know what this is about it has a great deep story line and the game is ran on you, you decide the outcomes of the story i played this game with a friend so i dont know what single player is like but each decision you make through out the game MATTERS not only that but you and your co-op friend if you chose to play with him get different cutscenes at times making it unique and makes you want to replay the story as the other character because you dont know what the other person sees you still meet up and make decisions together as at times the choices you make matter on the other person so over all very very good game and great story line a chill layed back game :)

This is a really good game. If you liked Until Dawn on PS4, which was a masterpiece, then you will like this game. I played it all the way through with ultra settings. The graphics are excellent 10/10 - extremely detailed and very cool lighting effects. The sounds and music are great, the story has an interesting plot twist, and there are many frightful moments to make you jump back. The characters seemed a little contrived, but that is a scripting issue. The acting of the characters is pretty good. The areas of exploration are rather limited, but that helps prevent the game from turning into an emotion-detached action oriented game instead of an atmospheric adventure.

The basic goal is to get all five of the characters through the game alive by making decisions on how they respond to various circumstances. I ended up with only two left, so it is not that easy the first play through. The choices you make affects their personalities too, but I didn't really see how this mattered. Perhaps this aspect of the game becomes more apparent with multiple plays through and alternate decisions. Sometimes the editing of the scenes was a bit weird I think due to the various possible outcomes of your choices, but this was the only thing that needed more work in the game.

Overall the developer did a really good job on this game. If you want to do some slow paced exploring while getting periodically scared or grossed out then try this game.

Friend Pass has been deactivated for about a year and is still advertised, total disappointment.I bought the game because I thought that the friend pass is like A Way Out,but unfortunately this is not the case.

Positive:
- great idea to include couch coop

Negative:
- bad camera movement and controls
- Way too expensive
- No Friendpass (Although it is still used for advertising)

Gameplay: 8/10
Graphics: 7/10
Length: 5 hour
Soundtrack: 7/10

I’ve heard a lot of good things about the previous titles from Supermassive Games (which I haven’t played yet due to their PS4 exclusivity), yet all of the reviews I’ve seen of this Dark Pictures Anthology project were mediocre at best. So it took me a while before I decided to check them out, starting chronologically with the Man of Medan. And, well, it’s not terrible.

The idea behind The Dark Pictures Anthology is actually quite interesting – creating an anthology of horror story adventure games in the vein of Twilight Zone or Tales from the Crypt (including the narrator character). All of the stories are supposedly completely disconnected and all play as a “cinematic adventure” game, or in other words – like a modern Quantic Dream title, full of QTEs and scenes that only move forward with no way to go back.

In theory, this could work really well. If the controls are fine, the QTEs aren’t annoying and there’s a clear understanding about what you’re about to do when you start your contextual interaction (which can be anything depending on the context), then this could lead to some exciting cinematic gameplay. The Anthology even adds a rather curious co-op playthrough option, where each player lives through their own scenario alongside the partner and both player choices affect the outcome. That said, I didn’t bother trying it out myself as it seems that it still can be quite buggy. Luckily, since the game got released, there was an update enabling the “Curator cut” of the game, which is allowing the players to experience the story from the co-op partner perspective.

But, being a horror story turned into an adventure game, the enjoyment of it hinges on the storytelling and the plot. And that’s where Man of Medan, the first game in the Anthology, is hilariously lacking. For one, the main plot of the game is spelt out for the players in the opening prologue and it’s hard to imagine any player not understanding what’s going on and why right there and then. Yet, the game doesn’t acknowledge the obviousness of it’s later “twist” until the final moments. Which, unfortunately, leads to both ease of some choices and confusion about the others, where it’s obvious that you shouldn’t do something because of how the rules seem to have been established. But in reality, you should do those obviously risky things because they’re good.

In a game about choices and consequences this leads to frustration if you’re trying to get invested into what you do. And since so much can go wrong despite the established rules, it’s very hard to actually get invested. Well that, and having flat and unlikable characters doesn’t help either. But yeah, trying to seriously play this game and “get the best ending” is actually going to lead to some bad experiences. I mean, in Curator Cut of the game you can get locked into a bad ending from one of the earliest parts of the game without having a direct input, instead affecting this outcome by a choice that isn’t even presented as a choice and instead as something you must to do progress the game to the next scene.

That said, playing Man of Medan as a fun stupid haunted house attraction, full of obnoxious jump scares and annoying QTE sequences can be somewhat enjoyable. I didn’t hate my time playing this game and I can see this being fun in a schlock way. But Man of Medan immediately establishes the whole Anthology as being a very mediocre uninspired “horror anthology”, without fun twists, though provoking situations or good storytelling.

PROS:

The graphics.
The story,
Jump scares.

CONS:

Controls are not to my liking and the key bindings could not be changed on my PC.
Character movement is stiff.
Characters do not walk any faster with the key command.
Quick time events were atrocious.
Game is way too short.
Multiple playthroughs required in order to collect everything.
I couldn't even find a save option when hitting escape. Who knows if there even is one available?

Final score: 6/10 It's worth buying and playing, once it's at a bargain bin price. I'd say same goes for the whole 5 or 6 games in the series. Over and out!

This game is stupid. Everything about it is stupid. The walking simulation is stupid. Walk right, it goes left. Walk left, it goes right. You'll probably walk yourself to death before you rage quit. And let not talk about the QTE timing. You barely had time to press the damn button and it gone. Even with the disable QTE timeout enable. Aaand it's gone. Some interact items aren't even showing up. Making you miss most of them. Time are given too short for you to interact with the area before the next sequence already start in certain part of the game. No indication of direction is given. So if you accidentally walk through a door or interact with the main event. The next scene will automatically play out. Making you unable to further explore for more clue.

Do I recommend this game to you. Fck no! Unless you want to waste your money on this shit.

You watch horror movies and always talk about how the protagonists always make dumb decisions?

This game gives you the opportunity to put yourself through the horror movie saga test

The graphics are great and does have good replay value should you wish to unlock all achievements and get the multiple endings.

Would recommend picking up on sale and checking out the games within the franchise.

I got to say this game blew me away, i enjoyed every minute playing it and could'nt wait to see the ending that i had made by choosing my version of the story, the game is very cinematic, very atmospheric and excellently crafted. I started playing a second play through almost immediately afterwards. going to try and play it differently to see how the story changes.
recommend this game to anybody that likes intense story based games like myself.
I actually prefer this game compared to Little Hope which i also thought was excellent.

This is better than Little Hope in terms of gameplay. There is way more story variation in terms of scene, dialogue, and choices. The plot twist is also more satisfying, and generally the characters are more fun. Little Hope was a step down in terms of gameplay, this is better in my opinion. Only real cons are that it lacks Little Hope's polish due to being the first game in the series. Overall a really good game, I want future Dark Pictures games to be more like this one in terms of Gameplay (Little Hope was too linear for my taste) and more like Little Hope in terms of game polish and smoothness.

It pains me a little to give this game a negative review, as I do enjoy the gameplay and storytelling quite a lot. However, the amount of issues I've had while trying to play this game is horrendous. Firstly, the friend pass is a pain in the arse, didn't work, and I simply had to do movie night mode via parsec instead.

Secondly, the loading screens in this game have been awfully slow, often. My PC is pretty decent, above recommended specs for the game, too. I've had the game crash and freeze up MANY times. Sometimes whilst trying to load the game, sometimes when a cut-scene is about to start, such as when looking at pictures.

Finally, there are also graphical glitches. Some textures not loading here and there for a short while is common, though not a big deal. However I once had an entire room not load. We were stood in a blank canvas of blue. The only thing that was visible within the blue were the lights indicating points of interest. After navigating around invisible walls to reach them, some finally loaded.

Writing this current review during the loading screens to boot the game back up after a crash. Still not loaded in. So yeah, fun game but they really should have fixed a lot of these kinda issues in the time since it has been out.

Creepy Adventure

I really enjoyed this title and how much you do I think will be entirely based on how accurate your understanding is of what you are paying for. Many reviewers are claiming the game is too short for example ignoring the fact that its only short because you carve your own path and dont explore every possibility in one playthrough.

The price at full is similar to a couples cinema night and on sale its a bargin for a evening on an interactive horror. The production quality is great and its equal too or better than most movies made in the current era. Its another one of these games that proves that simple interaction really emboldens the experince of a story. There are obvious stand out moments but even the debatably long corridor parts people complain about alot I found still very creepy as the suspense builds. Maybe this would be boring if I was stuck in a chair but holding a controller and wandering through a nightmareish old ship is really atmospheric.

Acting and the motion capture is truly impressive, the narrator is a stand out for me with some of his lines being truly powerful and well written that had me pondering the concepts of time choice and consequences. The game has multiple endings and with my playthough despite my sucsess my big mistake haunted me for a few days later. You see you may dislike all the characters in the game it doesnt really matter because you can still put yourself in their shoes and act at will making your choices consequences hit heavy. That in turn makes this game weigh heavy on your mind retracing your decision making in your mind, what could I have done... why did I do that... what does that say about the things i do in the real world.

Now dont get me wrong the game isnt super deep but its foreboding dread its creepy atmosphere pushes you to think deeply which makes for a memorable experience which I encourage you share with others in the same room. The Resident Evil series continues to reshape into something new which hasnt really hit for me like Resident Evil 1 and if you are similar in your love of that more claustrophobic puzzle style game you might just love Man of Medan.

Lastly if your nervous to buy this game please avoid all youtube videos and just get it on sale dont spoil this experience for yourself, its a quality game in an age that game developers shovel out titles like disgusting mcdonalds.

DISCLAIMER

The review you are about to read is based on my own experience with the game, my judgment, and the rating system! No third party has impacted anything said in this review. This review is also 100% spoiler-free, so you don't need to worry about that either.

Gameplay and Interaction (16 out of 20)

Besides walking, choosing dialogue, and occasional quick-time events there's not much going on in terms of your input during gameplay. The whole game revolves around an interactive system that lets you make decisions. Some of the decisions have an immediate impact and some show their consequences later on, but most of them are very similar. Quick time events on the other hand are more tricky, as they can determine the outcome or faith of a specific character in the sense that either one of them dies or lives. If you don't like someone, in particular, it's easy to get rid of them.

There are a few issues regarding interaction. For example, you can't just select a specific interaction piece without making your character face it at a specific angle. It's nothing game-breaking, but I just don't like going around a specific object for twenty seconds while I was able to do the same from the other side. I won't even begin to mention the slow walking rate of the characters, and fast walk doesn't make it any better as it's only slightly faster. It takes forever to get to a specific location and if you have to back-track, well... let's just leave it at this: it's not at all painful, but is problematic at times.

Throughout the game, there are also secrets and wall pictures that you can interact with. The secrets themselves add up little pieces of the story to create this whole bigger picture. The wall pictures on the other hand show you something that might happen shortly. All of this ties up perfectly in the end and makes you think about your decisions. Decision-making interactions also have a positive or negative impact on the relationship between characters. Keeping things between all the characters in good standing isn't all that hard either, but takes some effort, especially if you find one of them annoying. Making a few decisions that someone might not like can add up to the positive or negative side of a relationship.

Graphics and Sound Quality (18 out of 20)

The graphics quality is great and almost life-like in some instances. Character faces and models are very well done, and the scenery overall looks compelling. Everything is very well put and I can't think of anything that I did not like. The setting is perfect and everything has been thought out to every single detail. The sound quality is also immaculate. Voice-acting is decent, not great but believable and the music and ambient sound pieces are always on point.

Performance and Optimization (16 out of 20)

Considering that there are no open-world set pieces, I thought that this game wouldn't be at all that demanding at first. Then I saw these CGI and real-life-like character models that made me realize that this isn't the traditional character design you'd see in other video games. All these graphical effects and details add up in the end which makes it very heavy on the GPU side of things. Is that sort of GPU power requirement justified? Well, yes and no. There are a lot of games that look a lot worse than this and eat as much if not more GPU power.

As far as all the hick-ups and slow-downs go, I did not experience anything out of the ordinary or something you wouldn't see in other games of a similar scale. There are, however, these occasional stutters that occur whenever the game is loading in a new area, which is a given considering that it's powered by the Unreal Engine. I've yet to play a single game based on UE4 that does not have these issues. It's nothing major, but I thought I'd put it out here.

Story and Content Value (18 out of 20)

The story follows five characters that embark on an adventure to find some missing gold. Early on you find out that the gold hunting mission is something completely different. Each of the playable characters can either live to see the end or die along the way. Thankfully, the story itself tops out at around 3-to-4 hours of playtime if you're taking your time, or 2-ish hours or even less if you speedrun through it without doing collectible hunting. All in all, it's an interesting concept that I have firsthand already seen in Until Dawn.

Although I understand that the main focus of the story is on one single thing, I would have loved to see some depth regarding a few minor details or some character backstories as some aspects are pretty much ignored. More information regarding anything wouldn't hurt, you know? If you're an achievement hunter like me, you'll likely be replaying the game a couple of times to unlock every single one. On the other hand, going through it multiple times is a way to play this game, as there are tons of decisions that can change the outcome. The story itself isn't boring, and searching for (and reading) all these secret notes is enjoyable.

Also, please remember for the love of God - this isn't a one-off game where you complete it only once and leave it be. It's meant to be played several times. That's why two cuts exist, that's why the co-op and couch-op modes exist. This is one of these games that can be played on your own but is even better with friends.

Animations and Movement Controls (14 out of 20)

While the rest of the game is fantastic, there are some issues regarding the character control that should've been better. Even though I played with a controller as opposed to the keyboard and mouse most people would be using on the PC - the movement and precision of movement aren't great. The overall character control is sluggish, and most interaction elements aren't being displayed properly.

Face animations are also an area that does not shine all the time. There are certain moments in time where the animations on the faces just don't seem right. Or these camera cuts that make the characters do all these crazy animations. There are also these face grimace transitions that don't look natural, and that's the only thing I found annoying about them. The rest looks flawless.

Final Score and Conclusion (82 out of 100)

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is taking a similar approach as Until Tawn on story-telling that might not be interesting for many people. I generally enjoy these types of games, and I can see why some people might find them less interesting. It's an interactive movie where the outcome depends on your decision-making. If you've played anything from Telltale or Life is Strange for that matter, this might be your cup of tea.

I like this game but wish you could go back and redo the QTE. The game auto saves after each one so you are stuck with the direction the game goes in. Even after the initial playthrough if you try to go back and choose a different path you will most likely get the same ending because you aren't given an option to improve on the QTE, just a one shot chance.

The Story of this game is great!
BUT
There are so many flaws that i cannot recommend it...
Bugs:
When you start a game, the game just goes black and you cannot do anything except killing it and restart the Game again. Then usually this bug is gone.
At the end of the game, after the conclusion cutscenes the game sometimes locks itself in a loading screen (before Little Hope Teaser)
Several secrets are not logged in the Collection tab under some circumstances, seems random

Gameplay Decisions:
As far as I understand the core mechanics there are several different outcomes and you are supposed to replay the game with different decisions. Sadly, its impossible to skip any cutscenes, you have to rewatch all the cutscenes over and over again each time you attempt a new run. Yes, it is possible to restart at a specific chapter once you finished the game, but you still have to watch all the cutscenes again...
At certain points of the game you are just supposed to wait for a set amount of time until the game progresses...
In a game where you are supposed to experience different endings it's made extremely tedious...

If you just want to play through the story once go ahead and get it, if you are a completionist the get the fck away from this game!

The coop feature of this game is really fun, but the quality of the game is only decent at best and the facial animations is giving me the uncanny valley vibes, the story is pretty short which in itself can be beaten in around 4 hours++ all of these really shows that the game didn't have as much budgets as their previous game; Until Dawn.

WARNING: If you are buying this game mainly to play with friends beware of a huge bug about 75% into the story. The game gets into an infinite loading screen and there is no way to get past that. You'll have to start over. There is a patch for the game that says this issue was resolved in december of last year, but as of end of mars 2021 it still hasn't been resolved. And since the bug shows up 75% into the game you are past the 2 hours of gameplay and can not get a refund because of that. So be prepared to have to replay the story to avoid the storyline with the bug. Try to buy the game when it's on sale, 29,99€ is expensive when the game still has such a huge bug 2+ years after release.

If you are mainly interested in this game to play in singleplayer mode, the game is absolutely amazing and entertaining. ✨___✨ So if you have played Until Dawn and liked it, you will most likely enjoy this one too.

It had a lot of promise, but the storyline is all over the place; nothing made sense unless you'd already played the game; the coop doesn't fit at all in terms of gameplay; the solo is even worse; scenes are continually cut, and you'll almost certainly destroy characters because the developers thought it would be clever to delete vital scenes while hiding it with plot. In general, this was a terrible experience and a significant move down from Until Dawn; sure, the budget was smaller, but it still felt hurried. I'd go into more depth, but that would give away too much information. On the plus side, the graphics were incredible.

Straight to the point with no spoilers: It's a fun game. The story starts off slowly, but it becomes more thrilling and entertaining as you progress. You are the audience, and you're also in control of which ending you produce. Yes, the choices you make throughout the story affect the ending. I was pleased with this game overall.

Enjoyed this first entry of Supermassive's new Anthology. The narrative and atmosphere felt on point, but felt choices and relationships made no difference between the characters connecting to one another. It was an interest part of Until Dawn, but with this being a shorter game, the effects of choices didn't have much weight.

For game play, there's not a much besides QTE, which is expected if you've played Until Dawn. It could be good to add some puzzle elements or more involved item interactions to vary the game experience. At times it felt like the game was on the rails too much. Open doors and closed off hallways guided you throughout the ship, and felt like there was very little to explore.

I would definitely recommend it to horror lovers, and will check out Little Hope next.

I usually wouldn't judge a game based on it's technical issues, but this game takes the cake.
At 1st I couldn't start a new game , back screen issue on new game loading, fixed it going full screen instead of windowed fullscreen , ok cool, play half the game there and continue with my life.
Following day i can't load the save without a black screen on loading again, go back to windowed full screen , full screen, nothing fixes it, read online , uninstall VC redist , reinstall lastest, nothing does it , drops the game.
And everytime i have to force exit the game, killing the p task won't even work i have to force reboot.
fuck this game

Man of Medan is different to Until Dawn in its own way which it is usually compared to . One thing to take into acount is the fact that playing one ending does make the game in it's entirety VERY short . I played with one other person and we completed the story in roughly 4 hours , although it may be different for those playing with more or just themselves . This short timeline does come at a cost of the characters feeling a little bit basic with some more than others feeling like just a video game character instead of someone you really empathise with , which affects decisions . On the other hand though , the story was fantastic in my opinion , and it was graphically insane , it looked out of this world and was optimised very well in retrospect . The decision basing actually felt good and i did struggle with some , not really knowing where i would lead myself . The horror aspect is very good , with the setting feeling terrifying when you're by yourself , although the jumpscares began to feel just the ordinary after so many . I must say though , playing with another player albeit friend or family made it SUCH an enjoyable experience , making you feel responsible for the other players outcomes was a scary but amazing feeling and so I would definitely recommend this game , more so to those playing with others , although i havent experienced the single player playthrough

I'm genuinely disappointed in this game. It had so much potential, but fell completely flat. It feels like it's trying to be an Asian horror game, while also attempting to mimic horror anthology shows (like AHS), while also trying to be like those other QTE interactive stories. And (like in the other games), only the graphics deliver.

The script for this game is mediocre at best; there are a lot of continuity issues and scene setups that completely took me out of it. The hostage scene on the dive boat in particular was just....odd. I kept trying to figure out why they kept moving them around, and taking one person at a time. It felt like the scenes were constructed to pad the time, but just made things even more confusing and drawn out than necessary.

Voice direction was very inconsistent. There were some scenes where it was well done and made the characters feel more realized, while others felt like they were just reciting their lines. Audio mixing was pretty bad too. I've heard better voice audio quality from the streamers on Twitch. I'm assuming it's just bad mixing, and not the quality of the recording equipment they used. The curator was the only one with really good voice acting (I can guess, because he had more experience than the director).

QTEs are timed with the action on screen, which means some will be crazy fast and others will be crazy slow. I wish they'd just enter into slow mo, that way timing for them is more consistent. I didn't mind them though. There were the right amount, and I liked the idea of targeting an area to launch an attack. I did have issues with the interactive bits. The action on the diving boat where they had to break out the window was one. I thought we were both supposed to hit it when the thunder sounded, but the other character hit it right after the button prompt showed up, instead of waiting for the thunder. It was weird. There's also an option that's supposed to turn off the timer for the QTEs....but it doesn't seem to work.

Graphics and animation were top-notch. Character models were really detailed, in-game facial animations when talking and reacting were really good. My wife was watching me play and thought they all looked really realistic. The environments and atmosphere were almost perfect. However, it was constantly ruined by cheap, unnatural jumpscares. You're literally on a ship that's falling apart, and the best they could come up with is a loud synth hit, with a rat (occasionally swapped out for a grotesque face). The only natural one I can remember is the bursting steam pipe (which was a genuinely satisfying scare, and didn't break the atmosphere).

In all... I can't really recommend this game. It's more fun to watch someone play this game, than to actually play it...and even then, if they're okay with the mediocre script. Even though it's an anthology, it is nowhere near the quality of shows like AHS or Black Mirror. The story had potential, but it really didn't deliver. And like others have mentioned, it's a bit too short if you're paying full price.

Bonus: the song on the intro credits was off. It sounded like it belonged in an intro for XXX or the Fast and Furious series. Not an atmospheric horror game; the genre was fine, the choice of song was not.

Storyline: Not too bad, opening is great, but middle part till the end is kinda less satisfying. I give it 7/10 overall.
Graphic: Superb
Control: 6/10 (little bit sluggish)
Pro: Jumpscare(s) are exciting in the game.
Con: Not as good as Until Dawn, short game length

I personally like this game, but I recommend others to buy this game when there is a discount.

Neat story, but too short at 4 hours. Story is simple and the gameplay isn't strong enough to be a draw by itself. If you find the replay value of trying to get every achievement and seeing how you can kill people or save them appealing, you might like it but otherwise avoid.

Not worth the price tag, definitely wait for a sale if you're interested.

I got this game so me and 4 friends could use steam remote play to play together.

Everyone took control of 1 character and while I enjoyed the experience, there are a few things I have complaints with:

-There is no option to make quick time events easier. We're playing the game pretty casually and there is input lag because of the way steam remote play works. As a result, all my friends have way less time than they normally would have to complete the quick time events.

-The button mash quick time event looks way too similar to the normal quick time event and they even sometimes place a button mash in the middle of normal quick time events. This has as a result that we just press the button once and fail the event, because the game doesn't make it clear we have to press the button multiple times.

-We were often responsible for each other's lives instead of our own. One of us failed the quicktime events because of reasons described above, and as a result, someone else's character dies. I get that choices with one character should have the possibility to bring others in danger, but it wasn't fun when someone else's character died while another player was playing.

-There are also a lot of very cheap jumpscares. You know the ones I'm talking about: the ones where you open a door and a rat comes out accompanied with a loud noise. They're just annoying in my opinion and add nothing to the game.

-The game is very short.

The friend code doesn't seem to work. My friend downloaded the game off the friend's pass but originally it would let him accept the invite and join but then the game would kick him out telling me that I didn't have a friend's pass. He removed it off of steam and used the code again but it gave the same error, this time it actually used the code though and he can't use the code again. All of this has been less than 24 hours of the game being purchased and has made the experience a lot less enjoyable knowing to get my friend to join we have to buy the game again or use remote play because the friend's pass doesn't work for us.

Great call back to classic horror. The story is only 4 hours long if you go through it without too much exploring. Given the impact of choice and different endings you'll want to play this through a few times.

Feel free to follow my review page!

The gist of it:

Man of Medan had the potential to be a great horror game, considering its setup but, unfortunately, it fails completely on all aspects of the genre.

???? The good parts:
+Lighting and textures are high quality.

????The bad parts:
-Cheap scare simulator.
-Horrible voice acting.
-The plot starts interesting but goes to shit once you figure it out.

Story

The story starts simple and good enough, a ship that carries soldier coffins and some mysterious boxes is stranded in the middle of the ocean when a storm hits it and it unleashes what was in the mysterious sealed boxes and everyone onboard start to see things which quickly turns into a horror show.

Fast forward years later the main characters are introduced and they go on a boat trip to scuba dive in the ocean and find the location of the Manchurian gold. As you slowly progress through pointless nonsensical writing, things start to go wrong and end up on the ship Medan.

As you can imagine things take a terrible turn and based on ur stupid choices characters may die or not. You start to realize what goes on on the ship and once you figure out things, the horror aspect just goes poof in the air. I honestly just want to tell you what happens to avoid you the pain but I don't like to spoil things but don't expect anything good.

And just how it ends the post ending scenes are even more stupid than the rest of the game.

If you do want to know the main plot here's the gist of it, huge spoilers ahead:
there's no horror, nor any ghosts, just a biochemical weapon causing hallucinations. Yes, you read that correctly, a horror game isn't actually a horror game.
Story rating: 6/10

Gameplay

So the plot is bad, maybe the gameplay can carry it right? It does not. Ever played walking simulators or Telltale games? Well cut half the gameplay, make the movement slower and you have Man of Medan.

You walk so little and in the most obstructed mega linear paths that I can't even call it a walking simulator. There are some good aspects and some choices you make matter on who survives or not but most of them are just nonsensical. For example, I found a gas mask and the character never used it and just discarded completely. Another character found a knife and she lost it later in the water, never using it. Maybe there were scenes and choices that could've led to me using them? Probably yes, probably not, but the way it was managed was deplorable, to say the least.

There are some dialogue choices in the game and how you respond it increases your reputation with the characters you speak with or can change your traits. What do these stats and traits do? Not sure. At least they did nothing in my playthrough or at least I felt they did nothing. My characters did not build any relation with one another even though I was nice because the game forced you anyway in dumb situations so what was the point of them? Achievements? Maybe it affects certain scenes? Unknown but does not really matter since if you fail a QTE your characters can and will die, in the stupidest ways. I managed to only get one character killed right before the end only because I got so bored I just stopped paying attention.

How can you add such interesting features that can alter the course of the story, presumably, alongside the most boring gameplay aspects of all time? What and who was behind this decision? Until Dawn had the same mechanics but they emphasized the importance of them throughout the game and the situations made sense. The same company made those games but I doubt the same people worked on both games. I feel like the engine was simply given to a small team and told them to deal with it.

But is it scary? Well if you find cheap scare mechanics scary than I suppose it will be for you because that's what all the game does to frighten you. It puts you in a zoomed-in scene and then just pops something in your face. That's what the developers thought a horror game should be. Think about that.

Gameplay rating: 5/10

Audio

Horror games and sound design should always work in perfect harmony. You cannot have a good horror game with bad sound design and Man of Medan has one of the worst sound mixes I've ever heard. From the first minute you start the game you'll notice the voice acting is bad which carries the entire game but not only that the sound effects from the ship and whatnot are so loud you can't even hear the voices of the soldiers. Muffled and poor quality sound effects and cheap recording becomes frustrating. Later in the game, it gets a bit better but at that point, you just won't care or even pay attention anymore. There's no fluidity to how characters talk to one another, one moment they're chill with you than the other they're mad, robotic.

As for the soundtrack, I suppose the few songs present in the game are okay. You won't care much about that anyway.

Audio rating: 5/10

Graphics, performance and tech analysis

So does the game run well at least? Thankfully it does but it's not an impressive feat because while it has great assets such as detailed textures and impressive lighting, it also looks boring as hell and devoid of details. You are in extremely tight spaces all the time so naturally, it should run perfectly.

Level design is absolutely bad as I mentioned in the gameplay aspect, painfully linear without almost any exploration paths whatsoever on a god damn huge navy ship. So much potential wasted.

As for bugs, no issues whatsoever.

Graphics, performance and tech analysis score: 6.5/10

Conclusion

So do I recommend Man of Medan? Hell no. Stay away from this terrible game. My search for a good horror game continues.

Final score: 5.6/10

Okay, so, I just finished my first play through (didn't do great), so, first off, I played and beat Until Dawn a few times, and that was a wonderful game, ps i wish it would come to Steam, but, anyways, so Man of Medan, is a good game, but, there are some issues i personally have with the game such as, the voice acting and writing can get a little cringe sometimes, but its doable, the game does have quite a few cheap jump scares, meh cheap horror imo, but, the game does have good moments too, i obviously dont want to spoil anything, the setting is visually creepy, and the graphics are superb, i think the ship is an immersive setting imo and the extended lore around the ship is quite interesting to read, i also really enjoyed the Currator's scenes in between the gameplay segments, similar to Unitl Dawn, Overall, its a okay game, not as good as Until Dawn, but still worth a purchase if it's on sale.

Having played the predecessor, Until Dawn, I was very excited to play Man of Medan. Unfortunately, this feels like a very rushed and unfinished game full of 'jumpscares' rather than suspense and a fleshed-out story. Often the cutscenes featured characters who were not present (or missed out ones who were) and animations tended to awkwardly skip scenes when moving between areas.

I would not recommend this game at full price, especially as this is the first of eight instalments.

The singleplayer and Movie Night (mode where the controller is passed around) experience could be decent, but I can't recommend this to anyone who wants play online with a friend.

1. Friend's Pass no longer works. It was a limited time event that only happened twice. However, there hasn't been an update that removes this and players are led to falsely believe that the system still works.

2. Online Shared Story is incredibly clunky with delayed movement and scenes. It's easy for players to get stuck for a few seconds after colliding with each other. Also, scenes that play for the host will start playing for the partner seconds later, leaving many moments out of sync.

3. There's a game-breaking bug in Online Shared Story. About ~2-3 hours into the story, there's a chase sequence that has the partner climbing a ladder. However, they can't progress because they'll be stuck in an infinite loading screen. The host can't progress either until the partner finishes that sequence. Currently, this bug has not been fixed. The only solution is to start a new game and hope it doesn't happen again. This is a great way to waste players' time.

4. When someone's controller disconnects or a player pauses the game, there's a 5-second countdown before everything resumes. There was one incident where a timed QTE was still in effect despite the 5-second pause. Hitting the correct button during the countdown will not register and you'll fail the QTE when the 5-second pause is finished.

Edit: Just experienced another game-breaking bug during the engine room level of the game. After turning on the generator, a scene will repeatedly loop when one of the players enters the room after it. At this point, both players will be stuck until the player who triggered the scene makes a decision, but they can't. Once again, there is no fix. You'll have to create a new save and restart at the beginning of the story.

Bought this game at 50% and even then its still not worth it. This game is not even on par with Until Dawn.

1. The writing of this game is just terrible. The dialogue especially is like its written by a grade school kid and not by a professional writer.
2. Voice acting in this game is only average but probably because of the dialogue.
3. Story quality is outright below average again due to poor writing.
4. Very predictable plot twist. Players who are smart enough will know what exactly is going on before the reveal.
5. Overall game is way way way way too short even at 50% price tag.
6. Unlike Until Dawn, you will feel no attachment to any of the characters at all.
7. Finally, if you're the type that wanna replay the game just to see the variety of death scenes, don't bother. Most of the deaths are the same except with different characters. Yup that's right, repeated death scene but different characters.

Overall this game is 4/10 to me.

Byte sized review An uneven and predictable voyage
Graphics 3/5 - Upon booting up Man of Medan, I was immediately struck by how more unpolished it was than Suppermassive’s breakout exclusive PS4 hit Until Dawn. Considering this game came out 4 years after Until Dawn, this came as a bit of a surprise. It honestly feels like a downgrade visually in terms of the environment and facial animations. While the game still looks okay, it's definitely not up to the same quality as Until Dawn and that is disappointing but then I do have to cut Supermassive some slack because they probably didn't have the budget Sony provided them with for Until Dawn.
Performance / Bug & Issues 3/5 - Man of Medan, for the most part ran perfectly serviceable on my PC. I did encounter a few graphical glitches along the way which had me chortling when I should have been cowering.
Story 5/10 - One can only hope that it gets better from here on out. While I loved Until Dawn's story and how halfway through the game it switched and became something else entirely, Man of Medan is a much more simple and predictable affair. To be honest, the plot is poorly-paced and the big reveals are so telegraphed that you will figure out what's going on within the first hour of the game, which ends up removing the element of surprise. It's also doesn't help that most of the characters are thoroughly unlikeable so it’s hard to root for them or actually want to see them succeed.
Gameplay 13/20 - Once again, Man of Medan falls short when it comes to gameplay. Simply put it's underwhelming. Characters don't particularly move fluidly and can be a challenge to control while the premonition system is a scaled back version of the totem system found in Until Dawn's which doesn't work particularly well this time around where as in Until Dawn's it was used to actually scare you with the possible fates of each character. I haven't tried the game in co-op, I am told that this is where it really shines, but in all honesty I found the single player a bit of a slog to work through and that's even with its really short running time of 4 hours to game completion.
Sound / Voice / Music 5/5 - Here the game excels. Voice acting is top notch, but you would expect this because the lines are being delivered by professional actors and the sound design is excellent bringing the creaking and groaning ghost ship your protagonists find themselves on to life.
Replay value 5/5 - While the story might not change that dramatically depending on your playthrough despite the branching narrative, there is a lot of replay value here for such a short game. You can try and keep every single character alive (which isn't too challenging this time around) and there are also various multiplayer modes to try out like co-op and movie night (where 5 other players each play one of the individual characters).
Fun Factor 6/10 - Man of Medan feels like a step back when compared to Until Dawn and one can only hope that the next in the series is a marked step up in terms of quality and storytelling. While I enjoyed my time with it, the end result was sadly a bit anticlimactic and underwhelming. There is a lot of room for improvement here, which I am hoping will be addressed when Little Hope launches later this year.
Overall score 66%

Most of the reviews tell you to play this game co-op. I haven't tried it. Eventually i will, as i have a friend pass.

For now, i did play the solo story for a few hours and i have to say it's great. Really is. The sounds. The graphics. The choices. The people.

The whole setting, it feels just right. Right as in; no crappy characters, cheap scary moments or lame story. Shit just happend to a group of people.

If you play this in a dark room with the volume high, you probably will enjoy it, as i do.

I was very excited about this game because I loved watching play throughs of until dawn. I suck so I haven't played it myself because I don't own a playstation or x-box or whatever it is u need to play that. However, I got a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable game and I played it with my bestie in my room which made it a lot more fun because you can make fun of the characters. And I love making fun of people. But you can't really compare it to until dawn. Or any game.. it's very short and I think it's a bit overpriced. The whole game took me about 3-4 hours (and during that time we made popcorn and chatted a lot)... But when you get to the end all you can feel is ????????????????????????????????????? Was that it? ):

The graphics were really pretty, loved the blood and the ghosts. And the characters. Everything is very detailed. Except for the goddamn plot. It's never really explained, even though it's predictable, you are still left with many questionmarks by the end. The predictability spoils the whole experince quite early, and I kind of hated the end. And it's also not very clear when you are supposed to press the shit out of a button or when ur just supposed to press it once. That shit got most of my dudes killed. But I didn't like half of them anyway so it was fine.

Besides these annoying little flaws I still think it's a nice game and I really had fun playing it, and I will replay it. Fuck I gotta save Brad. ):< He is the only one that deserves to live

Great game to play with a friend or loved one, really simple controls so almost anyone can pick it up and join in on the scare.

Multiplayer is fun- and tense-as-hell, and I can't wait to get the next in the series. I love the format of this and Until Dawn; I love the genre. I cannot recommend this game outside of couch co-op.

Unfortunately, the story just ain't great here, and they beat you over the head a little too much re: how to correctly handle the unique threats. Still, I mean, as far as horror movie standards go, probably some of the best you'll find here. Characters are especially well-done, even the one you're reallllllly supposed to hate from the opening becomes a lovable goon in just 4 hours.

Worst part is just getting the PC version to work: Issues with corrupt movie files abound, and we spent an additional 2 hours on top of the 4-hour playtime just getting the damned game to open and run without crashing.

I'm giving this a positive review overall but with a couple of caveats:

1) Play this in online co-op or Movie Night (i.e. pass the controller) mode. It's not great on your own. Also take note that while it does have an online Buddy Pass, a lot of people are complaining it doesn't work. I didn't get to try it.

2) A lot of people experience an issue getting a black screen when they try to start a game because Supermassive improperly encoded the game's video files and still haven't fixed them. You may have to use this community fix: https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/1382-man-of-medan-video-fix/

I was a big fan of Supermassive's first game Until Dawn which was exclusive to the PS4. This is similar in that it's a purposefully campy horror adventure game with a heavy emphasis on player choice, a lot of quick time events and where none of of the many characters are safe. The big addition in this one is the co-op which as I said above, is the way to play it. As with Until Dawn at the time, the graphics, character models and animations are top tier.

I did still enjoy this but it doesn't compare to Until Dawn and I definitely can't recommend it at full price. It's a lot shorter (it took a friend and I only 3.5 hours to do our first run), the characters are less developed and interesting (though still well acted) and without spoiling anything, the game's core hook is not what you think and the ending is a major letdown. You can do multiple playthroughs to make different choices but it won't change the core story of the game or impact the outcome much.

My friend and I did enjoy playing this but I wouldn't pick it up for more than $20, especially with the lackluster patch support the PC version has received so far. I am looking forward to the name game in the Dark Pictures Anthology but I'll also be waiting for a solid discount on that too.

It was fun though I saw the plot a mile away.

I play this game in the coop mode with a friend and holy shit I love it. The whole concept is great. You experience different things from your partner and everyone makes his own decisions and you can talk about it or just don't. The game is pretty short though and some people maybe don't like this fact but if you go to a concert or anything similar you pay like 40 or even 100 bucks for 2 hours or some so I think 30 bucks is somewhat ok for this short time if you see it as a nice evening event. On keysforsteam it's only 15 bucks btw. I hope that way more games with this concept will come out

This game was something I really thought I would enjoy and play over and over and over again to see every possibility unfold and get a full completion on it but sadly this was not the case. I played through this game 3 different times (solo, movie night, and online with a friend) and encountered some very odd but hilarious visual bugs somewhat frequently. However, this game is not about its graphics, it is very clearly story-driven. For a game that was made by the creators of Until Dawn, I was expecting much more variation from playthrough to playthrough and was severely let down. Easily, the best way to experience this game is to go through with an friend online who also owns it because that is when your friend can easily screw you over and you get some of the most entertaining aspects of the story. When you play the story one sided you basically have no understanding of what is happening from the other point of view and you'll most likely be getting bad endings. Although I have said a lot of negative things about this game I still found it enjoyable to sit down and play the few times I did. I am much more excited for the future installments and I hope they have more diversity in the stories they tell. Giving this game a 6/10 for its unique ability to experience it with a friend.

Since I'm a huge fan of narrative games, it's great.

But still, there's some problem for me (as subjective perspective). Bad optimization and character movements very clunky. Just small amount of problem but both really important element.

Story is short but since it's choice matter game, it's okay. You can re-playing again and again with different choices. Choices itself is good, it can make a huge difference.
And characters, it's mixed. Julia is okay. Alex, fliss and brad, boring as hell. But conrad is really fun tho, try to keep him alive!

It's cheap but better get in on sale.

The game is absolutely worth the declared price; but only if you like games in the genre of the so-called “interactive cinema”.

Pros of the game:
1. The visual.
2. The plot and the story - the plot of the game is good enough, but not all stories will look adequate (this is both good and bad).
3. Replayability.

Cons of the game:
1. Optimization - it is clearly visible that the game was not originally intended for PC users (despite the fact that the plot outcome depends on pressing during one button).
2. The choice of locations - not only is it of the same type (even by color scheme), so you will see almost nothing on the standard light setting.
3. “The Hand of God” - in some places it may seem that the developer intentionally leads us to one of the endings of the game, as in some moments he gives a second attempt if you did not manage to press the button, but in others - no.

Man of Medan is a story focused horror game where a group of five 20-something year old friends encounter a mysterious ghost ship while on a deep sea diving vacation.

The player controls a different character in each scene, and gameplay is all about choice and consequence. There are conversation scenes where you need to make dialogue choices, and action scenes when your character is in danger, and you need to quickly choose between two options (such as run, hide, fight), or perform QTEs.

The developers released a similar game on Playstation 4 a few years ago called Until Dawn. I haven’t played it, but I’ve watched a full lets play, so if you’re familiar with Until Dawn, you’ll know what to expect from Man of Medan.

The Good

• The story is well written. If you like slasher style horror movies, you should enjoy it.
• Its possible for all of the main characters to die, and your choices will determine who survives, if anybody. I’ve played through the game twice, first time I kept everybody alive, second time I experimented with a couple of different choices and finished with only two survivors.
• Hidden around the environment are premonition pictures, which show the player a short clip of a possible future event. Studying them could give you an important clue to help make the correct decision in a later scene. (Two of them were extremely helpful to me).
• Voice acting is fantastic throughout the whole cast, including Shawn Ashmore who I’ve seen in Quantum Break and a couple of TV shows. The other actors are less famous but they still did a good job bringing their characters to life.
• Graphics look great, especially aboard the Man of Medan, where the combination of poorly lit rooms, rusted metal and decaying corpses helps to create a spooky atmosphere. I didn’t have any problems with framerate.
• Controls worked well with my Xbox 360 controller and I didn’t encounter any bugs or crashes.

The Bad

• The game is quite short. My first playthrough took exactly 4 hours, and I wasn’t rushing. I enjoyed the story, but I can’t deny that when the credits rolled I thought “wait, is that it? There’s another twist coming, right?”
There wasn’t.
I felt like the game was missing a final act, one more obstacle to overcome before we could escape. My second attempt lasted only 3.6 hours, mainly because making a different early game choice meant I didn’t get to replay a lengthy late game scene.
• The curator’s cut, which is supposed to be an alternate version of the story, unlocked after you complete one playthrough, wasn’t significantly different to the standard version. You control different characters in some scenes, but they still have the same conversations, and I didn’t see any new scenes or alternate paths through the ship.
• Even though much of the game is set on a massive freighter, there’s not much room for exploration. Most of the time you only have one path forward, usually a narrow corridor, with only the occasional side room to look inside where you can find lore notes or premonition pictures.
• Almost every dialogue choice and item investigated/collected results in a pop up message in the top corner of the screen informing the player of “traits updated” or “bearing updated”. Its basically Man of Medan’s version of Telltale’s “x will remember this”, and its just as distracting and unnecessary.

The Recommendation

Man of Medan is worth playing if you value a good story, especially if you’re a fan of the horror genre, however the length is a problem, and you should wait for a sale. I hope this is something the developer will address in their future Dark Pictures Anthology games.

As someone who loves Until Dawn and The Inpatient, Man of Medan is a massive disappointment. It's one of the most bland, boring games I have played that look downright incredible. Their plan is a new Dark Pictures anthology entry every six months. Please make it more Until Dawn and less Man of Medan...
