Spielerisch stellt einem The First Tree keine größeren Aufgaben.
Speziell wegen der Low-Poly-Optik erinnert The First Tree sehr stark an Spiele wie Shelter.

Allgemein

The First Tree zeichnet sich durch seinen besonderen Fokus auf eine Spielgeschichte aus, welche gepaart mit einer großen Spielwelt, unterschiedlichen Welttypen und Sammelgegenständen geschmückt ist.

Steuerung

So I started playing this game today. The sound was pretty bad, the music was too loud, I couldn't understand what the voices were saying, not being a native to the English language didn't make it any better, but sadly there are no options to turn down the music in the menue!
Okay then, let's have subtitles then, I thought. Enabling those gave me a huge grey, half transparent overlay which covered half my screen and permanentely stayed there even when no words were spoken. Seriously, dev? I mean... Eh.
When exploring the snowy mountains all of a sudden my game dissolved and I found myself in a lush green forest. There was no warning I would transition between areas, I was not asked if I wanted to leave the current area (I did not, I was not nearly done exploring everything) and worst of all, there was no way back into the snowy mountains!

I was looking forward to playing this, but I think I'm already done. Not what I was hoping for :(

???? The First Tree ????

The First Tree bietet ein gutes Gesamtkonzept.

Pros

I don´t like the cam because I couldn´t see where the fox was gonna land.
So the stars achievement was really annoying to do.
The story is good, beautiful music and I like the art style.
But the damn fucking rabbits......oh man, they are assholes xD

Took 2 hours to get through this, and I'm glad it only took that long because I cried for 30 minutes on stream! Wonderful game, decent design, and amazing story.

I only say that if you can't handle emotional topics, do not go for it. If you are willing to and can handle it, then by all means play this game.

I was super excited to play this game and was so happy when I got it. Unfortunately I can not say that I enjoyed it very much.

There was the framework of a possibly interesting story but I could not make myself care about it. The characters did not talk like real people, which is sort of a problem since, well, that's sort of part of the idea.
There were many times where I spent multiple minutes just running across land to my destination with no collectables or even music. Just the repetitive sound of grass crunching and me doing nothing but pressing W.
I liked the ending more than the entire rest of the game but it still fell flat because it hadn't built a proper connection with me for me to feel anything about it.

The path wasn't clear a few times, which is understandable since you're supposed to explore, but a couple times I could not for the life of me figure out which way I was supposed to go. Particularly in the valley with the house and lift in it. I had to look up a walkthrough to find the path. I would say that this is a me problem except for that the person in the walkthrough ALSO looked all over and had problems finding it.

I somehow missed the second cub entirely? I looked it up and multiple people have also missed it. I don't know if it's a glitch or I just wasn't led to the area obviously enough. I feel that for something integral to the plot such as this, you should be forced to come across it.

Conclusion: My mother fell asleep multiple times while watching me play and I do not blame her. Okay framework and good art and music. Did not feel any emotional resonance to characters I should have felt something for due to odd story pacing and inhuman speech patterns. I do not think that I will be playing this again.

This game REALLY wishes it was Journey. And it's so so not even close... In all seriousness, you can only make me do so many double jump challenges before I get sick of it. I mean that literally; this gave me motion sickness. Doesn't help that there's no way to save the game except the auto save at the start of each level, which doesn't help much when some of the levels are very long.

Also, who makes a main menu that only has a start game option with no other available settings? The exit button doesn't even exit the game. It just takes you to the main menu, which has no exit game option. I had to close the game via Steam. Imagine doing all that and having the nerve to teach a design class.

Magical... Usually I do not write reviews, but in the recent months, somethings had changed and this game... I knew about it from the indie developer perspective, however, have not ever played it. Until now. And oh my. Game is short, but not too short. As far as visual novels go, game managed to find balance in exploration as well as story telling. The thing is, rarely games make you rethink your life as it is, more often they suggest refuge from reality. In this case I felt roller coaster of emotions. Thank you for the game and am totally recommending it for anyone. But a little tip - play it in evening and with attention. Maybe I feel drained emotionally, maybe not, but these 2 hours was a journey, which I need to stomach.

P.S. Underestimated the amount of achievements in my first run. Did not think I needed to check them before hand :D

Though this is clearly a personal project with a lot of heart put into it, I was overall disappointed with my experience of The First Tree :

Story

The First Tree sets a tranquil atmosphere through its vibrant, stylised environments and moving soundtrack. Its story, however, lacks substance. The game follows two parallel narratives: a mother fox searching for her missing cubs and a son reminiscing his estranged father. Initially this method of storytelling seemed promising; using one story as a metaphor to better explore the themes of the other. However, the subject matter and progression of both stories are very loosely related and fail to connect in a cohesive manner. While the story of the fox continues to progress throughout the game, the son’s story is fairly stagnant, even after the game reaches a turning point for both stories midway through. As a result, the gameplay and the voiced narration often feel disjointed, with the urgency of the fox’s search undermined by the narrator reflecting on trivial memories with his father that do not elicit any of the same emotion. The quality of the narration itself, also begins to deteriorate through the latter half of the game; retreading similar plot points that the narrative previously addressed for the sake of adding more story and pacing out the gameplay.
Furthermore, certain gameplay elements, such as searching for items within the environment, do not fit well within the context of both stories. While these items sometimes reveal fragments of the narrator’s past and his relationship with his father, there is little logical reason why the fox would be collecting these items when they serve no purpose in finding her missing children. In trying and failing to weave these two different narratives together both through its writing and gameplay elements, The First Tree struggles to explore the emotions or themes of either story in much depth and thus, it is difficult to be invested overall. The conclusion of the game, though sincerely heart-warming in its own right, is ultimately left somewhat confused and immensely unfulfilling.

Gameplay

The First Tree has the player search through a series of landscapes; following points of light on the map to collect story items and collectibles, before moving onto the next area and repeating the process. Though the areas were decent enough to traverse on their own, several of the game’s features (or lack thereof) seemed to discourage player exploration:
 • Though each environment is visually appealing and distinguishable from one another, the environments themselves feel mostly empty and lifeless. Each area is quite vast and has a comparatively small number of story items to collect. As a result, most of the game is spent finding collectibles that add nothing to the overall plot or travelling from one end of the map to the other with no exposition and very little to keep the player engaged.
 • The autosave function only applies at the beginning of each new area, meaning that any items collected within the map will not save unless the player ends the level.
 • Many levels suffer from a lack of clear direction, meaning that dialogue from story items can be initiated out of order and certain levels are made far more difficult to progress through than others.
 • The end point of a level is usually not obvious, meaning that players may be abruptly sent to the next area while exploring with no warning and no ability to return.
 • There is no restriction to the number of story items a player must collect before they can proceed to the next level, meaning that a player can miss important details of the story and is still able to progress.

Coupled with a clumsy set of platforming controls and an often-unresponsive double jump, the result is that exploration in-game is a frustrating and tedious experience, which serves only to take away interest from the over-arching story.

Conclusion

Despite its intriguing premise and charming presentation, The First Tree fails at delivering both a meaningful story and an engaging experience. Though disappointing, the game itself is not inherently bad, but merely simplistic and lacking polish. With some gameplay adjustments and better writing, there is potential here. I wish the developer well in their future projects.

I’ve looked at this game for years thinking one day I would find the time to play it. It never happened for many reasons, until lately a friend just gifted it to me giving me the opportunity to finally save some time for it.
The game tells a really special story, it’s a short, yet long experience. Not necessarily for good reasons. Persé the game is not long, but some game design choices make it longer if not frustrating.
The game has the flow constantly interrupted by objectives that are hard to find or the fact that there are collectibles around. I would have preferred if the game just flowed like a story embracing the narrative instead of having a bigger empty map that makes it more dispersive.
That said, I suggest it to people if they are ready to play a beautiful story but a really rough around the edges game.
I won’t put a vote on it as it’s a really small project and I feel it would be out of place, the experience is worth the price, especially on sale.

I played this game with no knowledge.

I got to the end and it hurt me with the end quote.
Because someone wrote it for me.
I only knew this after playing.

I then watched the reason why this game is made.
Its spectacular.

A simple way to word this is.

I hate this game because its so good.

I haven't played enough to really get into the game probably, but I just couldn't. Got bored 30min in. Seems like a good game if your into small jumping puzzles and lots of walking, with a nice atmosphere and soundtrack. Just felt the pacing was too slow for me.

A beautiful way to spend an evening. Definitely not meant to be a game that you should try your hardest at, as, for me, it was a heart-string-tugging adventure that made me shed quite a few tears. The excellent choices in music and remarkable atmosphere are not to be taken lightly, and I encourage any and everyone that has a few dollars to spend to take a couple of hours to enjoy this story.

TLDR: what could be a beautiful and simple exploration game gets dragged down by badly written dialogs and primitive gameplay.

I’ve really struggled with this negative review. The game seems to have been developed with care and has clearly a very sad story behind it. However, this is just… not a good game.

Gameplay is mostly a walking simulator with some (unnecessary?) platform elements. Initially, it gave me some Firewatch vibes, but it quickly wore off. Controls and animation are at the level of a student project.

Graphics are simple, at that threshold between being minimalistic and just cheap, but it actually provides on some awe-inspiring moments. And the soundtrack is pretty decent.

The worst is really the narrative that provides context to the main gameplay. The dialogues are so awkward and artificial that it’s cringeworthy. And the voice acting is just awful. Personally, I feel the message would work better with no voiceovers at all.

Which is really a shame, because there are some clever and creative ideas throughout the game
(like the the epilogue)
.

The First Tree

I did not expect to get this emotional. The use of one of my old favourite songs and the in-game mystery sold it for me straight away.

I was having a bad time in real life, this has put a smile on my face...

The First Tree is a short indie game where you play as a small young fox mother adventuring different beautiful and outstanding settings full of vibrant colours and sounds. I felt like I was there. Searching within the trees and the snowy mountains. Personally, i've always been a fan of Indie games, I love seeing what developers can do with a shorter budget than Grand Theft Auto! And most of the time they pull of things you can barely imagine, THIS IS THAT!

The First Tree is about acceptance.
The First Tree is also about betrayal.
But most of all I believe The First Tree is about resurgence.

Let me backtrack, you don't play as the small fox. You play as Joseph. A young man trying to manage and deal with losses and memories, and a reoccurring dream about a fox searching for something. And Joseph is a character who revisits his past even if he doesn't want to.

David Wehle! You, my friend, have just made it up there with some of my favourite developers of all time. It is clear David had a vision; he envisioned this story, and he wanted to tell it in a creative way which doesn't get enough credit. This game is a modern masterpiece in the world of storytelling. I can't remember the last time I played a game like this, specifically as beautiful and story driven.
The concept of letting your players affect what The First Tree's message is at the end...wow...not everyone would go out of their way to create something like that
That final scene broke me, not even in sadness. There is an aura about this game which I do not understand...If you're reading this now, get this game, i'd pay more money than it's been discounted for to be honest. I hope to see more amazing projects like this from David.

...In fact i'll go have a look now...

A great narrative driven walking sim, the music and story and great! The game hits you in the feels, the story is well written and you can feel a connection to the narrator and the fox thought it. The music is also incredible, as it fits the story and the background scene so well. This is by no means an exciting game but I couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting!

I really cannot say enough good things about this game, however there is one real negative and that is sometime you will get lost and have to walk a long time to get to the next objective or story.

If you can look past that and know that you'll prob play the game 1-3 hours (4 if you want everything done) then I would highly recommend it! I have attached some gameplay above and it def set how the game plays, so if you enjoy watching me play for the first 10 minutes I would def pick up the game!

This vision is why videogames can be art. Play it open minded. After finishing it, I understand why it is popular.
I understand not everyone will like it. It does have some lack of mechanics that can be dull and tedious.

The Short Version:

While its simplistic approach to gameplay may be a detriment to some, The First Tree undoubtedly has a beautifully put-together story that will resonate hard with players on an emotional level. From a writing standpoint, it’s a gem, with the tranquil atmosphere and iconic music making the experience all the more memorable.

The overarching issue that plagues this game is a lack of polish in other areas, such as the mechanics and the environmental design. If you’re willing to play it solely for its narrative, then I highly recommend it. Otherwise, buy on sale.

Pros:

Cons:

-A well-crafted story that’s beautifully told
-Calming atmosphere
-Wonderful soundtrack
-Good voice acting
-Charming visuals, for the most part
-Incredibly basic gameplay
-Odd-looking terrain
-Wonky movement controls
-Maps are devoid of life

My Rating:

7.5/10 - Great

You Are a Memory...

The First Tree is a third-person adventure game that sees you playing as a fox determined to find her missing cubs. Parallel to this journey is a deeply personal story about a man and his connection to his father. The two narratives play hand-in-hand, twining with each other to create an emotional and thought-provoking message that I think a lot of players can relate to.

A majority of your playtime will be spent through the perspective of the fox while you listen to several snippets of a conversation between the man and his partner. It’s revealed in the opening cutscene that the fox’s mission to locate and bring back her missing cubs was actually a dream experienced by this man, and he is thus explaining its contents with his partner. This results in memories of his father being brought back.

Those recollections of the past recount all of the special moments these two had together, starting from childhood and climaxing at young adulthood. The characters are very easy to connect with, thanks to their intricate writing and softly-spoken yet well-performed voice acting. The further you progress through their story, the closer you are to finding each of the fox’s cubs.

It’s hard to talk about what happens without giving away major spoilers due to the game’s small size. I managed to complete it in two hours, and though I have issues with the gameplay, the story is beautifully told in that short time frame. It deals with upsetting topics while also providing a layer of hope that things will get better. It is not a happy game, but it is an important one, and it will stick with you even after the credits roll.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2562090004

The writing undoubtedly stands high on its own, but it wouldn’t nearly be as effective as it is without the presence of the music and the atmosphere that permeates throughout every location. The soundtrack is rich and sublime and makes the devastating sequences all the more gut-punching, while the atmosphere helps convey those emotions even further through its ability to set the appropriate tone for where you are.

Living in the Past...

Your journey through The First Tree will take you across a variety of biomes and locations that are each distinct in their appearance and design. The use of colour is the main element that allows these levels to stand out. Bright colours help to boost their vibrancy, whereas darker tones are used when things get serious. These changes are instantly noticeable and effective at setting the mood.

Each map represents a different stage of the man’s life. This is showcased by the various small dig sites that you can find, where the fox, upon investigation, will bring to surface different objects that have a memory attached to them. These areas aren’t difficult to spot, as their locations are highlighted, but interacting with each one is more than worthwhile, as they help enhance the story by giving you additional glimpses into this man’s past interactions with his father.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2562090067

It can be small things, like the father carving the son a toy, or bigger events, such as the son getting in trouble with the police in his teenage years. They help you connect with the characters by providing you with a full understanding of their relationship and how complex it is. Without these, the game wouldn’t be nearly as impactful as it is.

Finding and listening to these memories is also what the gameplay loop revolves around - that and not much else. Should you wish to skip these sites, you’ll just be going from point A to B over and over again. There isn’t much else to it than that, so experiencing these is essential if you want to stay invested.

A Rather Cumbersome Trek...

The mechanics in this game leave a lot to be desired. You can run, jump, and in some cases double jump, but the controls for all of those actions felt wonky and unpolished. There is very little progression in what you can do. The locations may all look different, but they play more or less the same.

The levels themselves are charming to look at, but there are a couple of areas that let me down. The appearance of the terrain is one of them, and you can spot the issues with it immediately. It looks odd and unrealistic, which is why it’s all the more jarring when the rest of the assets, such as the trees and some of the other props, look neater and more detailed, for the most part. The two don’t go together.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2562089906

Whereas the other problem I have, which isn’t as big as the previous one, is the absence of life. Apart from the odd rabbit, a few deer and birds, as well as groups of insects in some areas, the maps are basically devoid of activity. This could be a purposeful choice by the developer for unknown reasons, perhaps it has something to do with your character being in a dream, but personally, I think it detracts from the atmosphere.

Both from a visual and gameplay standpoint, there are areas that feel unfinished, or are just lacking the delicate attention that the story received. Whether or not this game is for you will depend on what you’re looking for. If a magnificent narrative is enough, then The First Tree will more than satisfy that itch, but for those who expect more, you may struggle to find enjoyment.

I got this as a present and knew nothing going in. Reviews were generally good but those were from people who obviously knew that they wanted what the game offers. For me this is easily the worst game I've played in a long long time. I guess this is what a walking simulator is supposed to be, but what you do has absolutely no impact on anything. You move from place to place listening to some ultra cringey recollections of an immature idiot (actual voice acting is good, writing is abysmal). There is some stuff to collect, but it doesn't matter, and there is some god awful platforming for some reason.

I can't think of a single reason to recommend this, and have no idea why is has any positive ratings at all. (If you like being a fox walking around in the snow, it might be right up your ally!)

Overall is a great game and only has up to 4 hours play until you complete the game.
would wait for sale though as very short game, there is also no level select, no save game, if you quit on a level you can continue but only from the start of this level, so anything you collected you will have to do again.

One thing i will say is the dev is lucky that i gave the game a thumbs ups tbh.
This is because no key bindings at all ;( like come on its not 1990. and to top this if you look at discussions there is a reply from the dev where you can see him say he wants to revamp this and maybe add key bindings,

https://steamcommunity.com/app/555150/discussions/0/3223871682618415274/

What a joke and liar this was 2017 when he said this and still now in 2021 no change ;( guess they only wanted our funds and dont care for us the gamer i will be looking into any games from this dev from now on incase no keybinding and i will not buy any more if you can not bind your own keys.

Shame on you.

Overall game 8/10 minus the no key bindings -5

3/10.

Pros:
* Atmospheric vibe,
* Artful graphics.

Cons:
* Narrative is too expository,
* Janky controls,
* No access to the previously completed levels and need to start again from the beginning to access it.
* Exploration is too bland with a large area and less content.

Interesting:
* The dev made a game dev school.

Recommendation:
Recommended for an example of a good game dev study from my view. Even the dev made a school about game dev study. But in general, I am uncertain whether this is recommended or not. To avoid doubts like this, I will not recommend it. The reason is I need to recommend something that I can sincerely certain of.

The First Tree should be an endearing story game with small platforming gameplay. Instead, its a frustrating and disappointing experience that the developer hails as a masterpiece. The developer frequently brags about how he barely knew anything going in, that programming and game design is easy and everyone can do it. While I encourage everyone to pursue it that is interested, his lack of understanding about why a game genre is chosen for certain games over others shows.

A story game is linear for a reason. Even open world games have ways of preventing players from doing story missions too early or out of order. The First Tree does not do this. There are pillars in the sky that show where the player can grab the next bit of story, but its not always clear which pillar is the right one to go to. I found myself often skipping entire bits of dialogue and getting an absolute mess shown to me instead of anything coherent. This lead to the game feeling like a lackluster walking simulator and me quitting it very early.

There isn't much else to comment on. The game has two goals:
-be pretty
-tell a story
The pretty factor (art, music) were all bought and licensed assets. I understand the need for this, it would add a LOT of time to do this all by hand, but I find it bizarre an art family didn't do them even for the bragging value of saying they did. And the story factor failed due to the poor game design. This game would do better in a 2D space, or a more linear map.

I want the developer to make/play more games and improve. He and his wife are artists who would be able to make many assets and have the revenue to make something great. However, he seems perfectly content with his one game because it sold well despite its immense amount of shortcommings. Even if the First Tree is alright for a first game, its nowhere near worth playing or supporting or taking classes from the man who made it.

Jumpy foxy

The First Tree is a simple narrative/exploration game with light platforming sections.

It tells a nice story which is a bit emotional. You hear one person telling the story and kind of having a conversation with another person in the background while you play as a fox. The story is not about the fox obviously, it's more of a life story. But while playing as a fox you will encounter various objects resembling real life events and memories. The idea is really neat.

Gameplay is pretty straightforward and simple. There are several maps to explore. Each map is vastly different and pretty big. As you control the fox you can dig the ground to find memories and collect the stars which act as collectables. But stars might be annoying. There's no chapter select so if you miss one you'll need to restart the whole game so it's better to use a walkthrough. There's zero help from the game. It's boring, sure the maps are beautiful and it's fun to explore but i wish there would be some help from the game like map with collectables where you would need to find something first like all those objects could act as a key for revealing the collectables location on the map. But there's nothing. Getting everything by yourself is too time consuming and it becomes tedious.

Anomations and controls are pretty bad. It feels like the fox is just sliding and not running. The movements are also very erratic and inaccurate so the sections where you need to climb and jump somewhere might be annoying for people who are not used to this.

Graphics are pretty. While technically it's not good, artistically it looks nice. Although there's too much object pop-ins which sometimes breaks the beauty of the scenery.

Performance is great and the game runs very smoothly, I've played on 5800x, 2070s, 32gb @3440x1440.
There's also ultrawide support and the game looks even better in 21:9 aspect ratio.
Besides story there's one other thing which stands out – it's music. The soundtrack fits perfectly into that calm yet sad story telling.

It's worth getting on sale but it's nothing special. Short game with some nice story. I just wish it would had been told in some other manner, maybe in linear walking simulator fashion.

Pros
 • Nice artistic style
 • Pretty nice story
 • Good soundtrack

Cons
 • Janky controls
 • Some graphical issues
 • No chapter select

It's just not enjoyable. I'm not opposed to walking sims but the game punishes you for exploring; the movement also feels awful. I don't think this game received any playtests nor was thought put into 'what if the player goes slightly off path'. The biggest example of this is a dream sequence where there is no floor or sky or any land marker (only pretty reflection stuff). You just run.. but if you look around before running (as I did, admiring it) you'll run the wrong direction and after 5 minutes or so hit an invisible wall. I should've quit then but I thought maybe it'd get better so I ran all the way back...

On the plus side, the game is pretty.

The First Tree is a walking/running/jumping simulator navigating a fox through beautiful landscapes. The narrative is a conversation between Rachel and Joseph about loss, regret, life, and love. Snippets of their ongoing discussion are triggered at a handful of 'digging points' in each chapter. So, for the majority of the game, you are running rather than listening.

The narration is done by a real-life husband and wife team and they did a lovely job of conveying a caring and compassionate relationship. The rest of the sound track has some excellent music but you spend quite a bit of time listening to your paws hit the dirt. Each chapter has a unique landscape and the colors and shapes are detailed and quite pleasing.

The game is divided into 6 chapters and only saves when you enter a new chapter. There are 150 stars and a number of dig points across the chapters with no way to stop mid-chapter without losing progress for that chapter. This meant that I left the game running to avoid starting collectibles over (hence my time reflects many hours afk). There is also quite a bit of platforming (double and triple jumps to move between areas and retrieve stars from high places) At times, I needed a break to reset my jumping skills.

The game could benefit from an 'auto-run' mode as you must depress the 'W' key for the entire time you are playing. There is a toggle to turn running on or off (it stayed 'on' for my whole game). Despite switching fingers and hands, pressing a key for hours is hard on even the strongest wrist!

I have mixed feelings about this game. For whatever reason, I did not really connect with it on an emotional level. Finding the stars became my focus rather than listening and feeling. For achievement hunters, it is a tough one because of one achievement that involves chasing and capturing 13 rabbits (I gave up on this after I struggled to trap one). Finding the obvious dig points and stars is easy but there are 5 unmarked dig points that would be nearly impossible to locate without a guide.

If you are craving time with a fox, you might first consider Spirit of the North or Lost Ember. If you have played those or are looking for a less complicated and more straight-forward 'fox' experience, then First Tree may be perfect.

The First Tree is an exceptionally touching story of loss and regret, told through the eyes of a fox who's searching for her missing kits. I don't usually play walking simulators but I was immediately captivated by the beautiful scenery and atmosphere and had to give it a chance which I didn't regret in the slightest. The way the coloration is used to express the mood, how the music would change or go silent depending on what's going on in the story... All these little details made it an unforgettable experience. If you're looking for a short and peaceful story driven game, this is the one.

Pros:

 • great visuals
 • phenomenal soundtrack
 • unexpected story

Cons:

 • gameplay
 • controls
 • price for playtime

Conclusion

When it comes to the outer appearance, it probably would be triple A worthy. Visuals & soundtrack were just a feast for your senses and another great example what the indie market can do or offer these days. I was also positively surprised by the story or rather the bittersweet touch of it. There were some downsides like the lack of actual gameplay or the wonky controls but if you've played a few modern adventures before, you kinda get used to it and you know only to play them, when you're in the mood for it. I personally describe the experience you then get always as kinda therapeutic/soothing and really enjoy it. Btw did I mention what a feast for your senses this game is? So yeah, a clear recommendation during sales from my side.

The First Tree's gameplay is uninteresting and consists entirely of running through huge, empty landscapes to find objects that trigger the story to continue. The story itself has awkward dialogue and poor line delivery that made it impossible for me to get into. I was hoping at least one or the other would be enjoyable, but this game has nothing that makes me want to go any further with it. The graphics and the soundtrack are nice, but that's about it.

This game might be a great relaxing time for some, but as for myself, I was surprisingly disappointed. I like the idea, but just didn't connect with the story, or graphics, or slow game play. The music was nice. But most of the time I felt like I was forcefully trudging through a slow long walk, mainly disappointed at the computer-generated 2-D scenery, and feeling lost. Numerous times I got turned around since there's no compass and not enough good landmarks to keep one's bearings. Only one level had a visible sun to help keep you oriented.
If I'd have paid the retail $9.99 I'd have felt very cheated. Not being able to save anytime/anywhere was also an annoyance.
All in all, it's an interesting walking simulator game idea, but misses the mark during game play.

Final Verdict: A Nice Casual Walking SImulator. Spoiler-Free Review.

It took me about one hour to finish the game. This is a narrative-driven casual platformer where you're running from point to point, collecting stars, and jumping platforms. You're listening to a story about a dream about a fox while at the same time listening about the recent tragedy that the protagonist is going through.

The platforming sections are pure casual. The normal walking speed is quite slow, but you can run across the game with a simple button press. The visuals are absolutely beautiful at times with a gorgeous art-style that highlights stunning vistas. The musical soundtrack is excellent as well.

The narrative portion is very poignant, but it didn't really draw me in personally, especially at the start. The VOs did a nice job, but I think the dialogue could have been better fleshed out. However, it does come to a an impactful conclusion that will probably stay with you. There's this part where you type in a sentence that I especially enjoyed.

Overall, I thought the visuals and sounds were great. However, the gameplay sections were just mediocre and the narrative could have been tighter. Also, the game is kind of short even at the $10 USD normal asking price. I still recommend this game for fans of walking simulators, but everyone else should probably stay away.

Rate 6/10.

I got this game as a gift. After 45 minutes of giving it the ol' college try, I got it refunded back to the gifter.

I couldn't personally feel a connection with the the characters of either story arch, the fox's movements lacked fluidity (left and right movements being wildly abrupt), music was calming, scenery lacked anything special, but the color palettes of 2 out of the 3 biomes I explored were nice.

I felt as lost as the characters as I was playing, so I guess that's pretty good role play.

This game have charming graphics, really nice soundtrack and amazing story. Yeah, gameplay wasn't the best, could be done better instead of just running around collecting stars, but I got so into the story I didn't mind just running around the forest :) I reccomend if you like story-driven games.

Beautiful game. The controls are sometimes frustrating and occasionally it is hard to find where you're meant to go, but overall a very deep emotional experience I highly recommend. CW: Grief, loss, bullying, child abuse (not in-game but discussed in narration)

I saw this game advertised on sale on Steam and liked the art style, so thought I'd get it as it only cost me £2 and at that price you can't really say no to trying a game. Props to the one man developer on this game for creating this, but I simply cannot recommend this game.

The story is droll, takes a long time to progress and it's easy to miss crucial information out if you can't find the next point you're looking for, the voice acting is cringeworthy and quite frankly overpowers the nice OST for this game. Whilst aesthetically pleasing, the levels are huge which unfortunately makes traversing them tiresome as the fox you play as runs really slowly (that said, funnily enough I noticed the fox runs faster if you hold W and either A or D at the same time to strafe which doesn't do any favours for your eyes as the camera is all over the place.)

The animal models are really nice, and the fox is a lovely little model- going back to the beginning of my review, the art style is what drew me into the game in the first place so I've no qualms with that. It's just the story and voice work/voice scripting unfortunately.

This game was a LOT sadder than I expected and there was very few, if any, happy or comedic moments to make it easier. If you feel like you can handle very depressing games where theres very little distraction, you might like it, but it was honestly a bit too much for me. Above all though, this game is insanely beautiful and touching.

The First Tree haves an great atmosphere and storytelling.
The First Tree is forcing the players make empathy with Joseph and the other characters such as Mother Fox.
Besides, the story has had very deep meanings in itself.
I'm glad I played this masterpiece. (It may be boring in the beggining but in the end it worths your time and money.)
Footnote: Seeing a Fox in your dream indicates a period of isolation or loneliness. You need to take this time to ponder an issue or reflect upon your life.
If I made a any grammer mistake, I'm sorry about that. ^^

This is a very good game, every place has its own story, I was immersed in the story that was presented and made me really enjoy it, I used to play this game illegally and after observing it I wanted to buy it directly and it finally materialized now. I really wanted to like this game, but it's not quite there. The story is quite interesting and I wanted to learn more, but the gameplay didn't feel like it helped that story at all. The jumping mechanic is fun in a few places, but the environment is wide and there's not much that goes on between interest points. I feel like if the levels were more concise and the jumping was a bit tighter, I could have gotten into the game more.

I dunno. I know this is a one man project, that's why I bought it but I am not going to wear a blindfold and pretend it was good. The game is dragged down by it's clunky controls, repetitive gameplay and technical issues. Sorry but for a game that could have easily been made 10 years ago it runs like shit. It dropped bellow 30 fps multiple times on gtx 1650 super. Cyberpunk unironically ran better than this for me.

Firstly, The game's story is better than I expected (REALLY GOOD STORY). It's not a challenger game, it's really chill. Like you don't get fall damage, you don't die or something like that. This game is entriely based on the story. As far as I can see the missing part of the game is the controller and the camera view. I think this is not a big issue. As a result ask yourself, How I like games ? If you like PvP or something like games it is not YOUR GAMES but if you like story games You can try this game You won't lose anything. (Sorry for my english is not enough good)

If need the score...

The narration is cheese and the part of the story where main guy is a ~wacky crazy kooky teenager~ made me squint for a few minutes. The controls can get a little vague as well.

The 40s behind some rocks made me laugh though. Some of the hidden tidbits are smart.

Whether or not you should get it depends on the price.

I read the guy's story who made this game alone with hardwork and great drawings with his self thought unity engine skills and I'm impressed. I decided to give it a chance to see how he gather these skills in a 3D game. Actually, I appreciate the work, but when it comes to full packed video game, unfortunately it is insufficient. He wanted to tell us his story not with a youtube video or writings on a book page. Nice story that he lived and the subjects that he finger on.

It's an exploration game which a symbolic fox wonders around and listening the actual protagonist's story by second hand. Mechanics are so basic that is far from fun and impressiveness. Great work, great visuals but it's just not enough. I hope you'll make another with the learning you've got this project in the future. Cheers mate!

(First play-through)

Wow. This game is one of the most heart-wrenching games I have ever played. I cried multiple times as i played and had to stop and think many times too. I did not know the theme before I played and purchased this game which in my view improved my overall playing experience. My dad died 5 years ago today. 'The First Tree' explores loss and grief of a father and SPOILERS but the narrators girlfriend's mother too. These two become united in their grief throughout Joseph's (the narrators) retelling of his 3rd person dream of a fox in search of her lost cubs. It is rare that a game demonstrates the effects of grief well, especially that of a parent, and the child with so many regrets, however, this game did exactly that. Stunning graphics, cute animals and a beautiful story make this game one of the best atmospheric indie games i have ever experienced.

Thank you, David Wehle for blessing people who have endured parental loss with this masterpiece.

okay, just as a first off, this games visuals are insane, extremely pretty, i often found myself just stopping to stare at the surroundings to admire how stunning they were. that paired with the emotional story was perfect, the simple gameplay made it easy to play and enjoy, especially with the stunning surroundings. this game is extremely worth your time, and it only takes an hour and a bit to complete.
if you're on the fence about buying this game, do it, it is very much so worth the time and money. you'll enjoy it.

Nice landscapes, vey good soundtrack, but a narrative that couldn't get any more boring. Imagine a guy telling you the most average things from his childhood and a woman reacting as if it would all be so hard and exciting. While hearing this, you run and jump and run and run and run and run and jump with this fox. Why on earth should you play this?! The price of 10€ is a joke for 1,5hours of running, jumping and listening about how a teenager behaved like a teenager and a small boy like a small boy...

The First Tree

A simple but effective game with an emotional message about death, regret and contemplation.

Zitat:
Death is a subject that we all process in different ways. The First Tree takes a look at how a couple cope with grief and how they support each other through this crisis. It’s a beautiful story full of memories and regrets, accompanied by an emotional and passionate soundtrack.

First Impressions????

What a beautiful story. Perfect for an evening’s entertainment.

The soundtrack is sumptuous and very emotional. It holds the game together throughout and really emphasizes the poignant parts of the story.

The voice acting is surprisingly good considering it is acted by the developers themselves. I have certainly heard much worse from professional actors. Both the husband and the wife create believable and heartwarming accounts of their experiences.

The visuals are very beautiful although assets do get repeated somewhat. The movement of the animals are very realistic though and overall, it looks great.

The story is very moving and paced well. It is told through the eyes of a fox looking for her cubs who have been lost. This parallel story adds a further touching side to the tale.

Gameplay could be described as a walking simulator with very light puzzle and platforming sections. These are only vehicles to tell the story however and you won’t be challenged or find yourself stuck.

Zitat:
The First Tree is short at around two hours but it delivers a bittersweet and emotional experience which I found touching and thought provoking. The sound track is amazing and really tugs at the heart strings. I would certainly recommend this on sale to anyone who likes a good narrative and/or likes walking simulators.

????Watch the video for an idea of how the game works and the quality of the voice acting ????
https://youtu.be/M5V4CX-AYmM

Story ????

You are a fox looking for her three cubs who have gone missing.

Travelling across the lands in search for them your quest is entwined with an emotional recollection of a son’s memories of his father.

Gameplay????️

When you look around the beautiful environment you can see in the distance beacons of light. The beams of light indicate an object that is hidden underneath the ground which the fox can dig up. The object represents a memory which initiates a monologue giving some background to the object and how it fits into the story.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2284331122

The monologues drive the story forward and you’ll need to find and unearth every memory to progress the story. There are quite a few objects to find and the adventure will take you between two and three hours to complete.

The monologues are beautifully spoken and are pleasant and touching to listen to. They are often accompanied by a memorable and emotional soundtrack which is superbly arranged and although sometimes repetitive, never gets boring.

The fox can also collect stars which are littered around the area, sometimes hidden in remote areas. The stars are only for achievement purposes however but will increase playtime if you are interested in collecting them. There are one hundred and fifty to gather.

Different mechanics are added to the game as you progress including the ability to run, double jump and later to do super jumps.

Super jumps are achieved by collecting butterflies hidden around the biomes. The more butterflies you collect, the higher you will jump, but the linear nature of the game means you’ll only collect what you need to scale a high wall blocking your path.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2284330575

There are slight puzzle elements in the game. For example, there is a section where you need to locate three rocks to navigate past a blocked passage but these are few and far between. It is a shame there weren’t more puzzles in the game. The ones that are present are easy to solve and are a mere distraction from the endless running.

The areas are reasonably large and are beautiful to traverse, but they do start to look similar, with assets repeated at regular intervals. The landscapes are very pretty and colourful and overall, it looks pleasing. There are around four or five different biomes to travel through.

One of the most annoying features of the game however is the fact that you can wander into the next zone without realizing, and you cannot return. Once you cross the invisible boundary a loading screen appears and that is it. You are in the next biome. I believe this only happens when you have collected all objects but be wary if you want to collect all the stars.

Graphics ????

Very colourful and distinctive but slightly repetitive. The fox is animated very well and there is some excellent use of light and shadow. I thought it looked very nice.

Sound ????

I think the voice acting and the musical score are the main attractions in this game. They are both very impressive and enhance the story immensely.

Conclusion????

Zitat:
The First Tree can be easily labelled as a walking simulator but it is more interesting than most. The voice acting and musical score are incredible for an indie game and the story is both touching and interesting.

There is a lot of running around in the game but I never felt bored doing so, and looked forward to the next monologue.

The story is well paced and builds up to an emotional ending that had me thinking about my own life.

I’d certainly recommend it to walking simulator fans but it won’t satisfy platform or puzzle enthusiasts. These are just added additions to the game.

While this game certainly possesses a moving story, one that might hit close to home for a lot of people, it's certainly not a good game in any sense of that word.

In fact, it's barely a game to begin with, since most of your time is spent traversing empty landscapes with nothing to engage you just to pad out the playtime, which isn't even that long anyway. I understand that it is done so that the story's pacing feels right, but the fact that not even interesting narration is thrown your way while exploring these environments shows a lack of understanding on the writer's part for how to engage your audience even when nothing is happening.

The next thing is the controls; he fox feels loose, flimsy, and more like a boat than a four-legged vixen. It takes an oddly lengthy amount of time to turn, and the double jump feels like an excuse not to construct maps which are both interesting and work with only a single jump.

The environments are fantastic but I feel like I'm exploring them out of necessity, not because I want to. It takes far too long to get anywhere and it's just normal forests and whatnot. The scenery I liked the most was the shallow sea with the stars shining above, but that's about the only thing I can praise as even remotely unique to this game.

Calling it a game is somewhat of a disservice to other games; it doesn't take advantage of the medium whatsoever. The only section where the game even takes advantage of the fact that it's a game comes when you're asked to type a message for other players, and that's it. There's nothing truly interactive, because if you just keep walking to the lights and you'll get to the ending anyway.

There are semi-difficult puzzles I guess. if you can even call them that to begin with, because any human being with the intelligence level of a 10-year-old could figure them out. It takes forever to move between them anyway, so it's not like you're gonna get to all of them unless you have the patience of a buddhist monk or something like that.

This would've been better as an MP4 rather than an EXE, my verdict is a 4/10, because while it had concepts that were mildly interesting at best, it failed to take advantage of the medium it was in and had mediocre execution for its more gamey parts.

The First Tree is essentially a walking simulator. There isn't much to the gameplay, except a small amount of puzzle elements where you plan out extra jump boosts. It exists mainly to tell its story. Speaking of the story, let's talk about that. The main character of the game is telling his SO about a dream he had about a fox looking for her kids. On its journey, the fox uncovers items that are connected to the main character's life and his relationship with his father. The dream acts as a storytelling mechanism for both the main character and the fox's search for her children. This is accompanied by beautiful environments and music. Seriously, the music of this game is amazing. The overall atmosphere is really good. I found it extremely easy to get lost exploring all the nooks and crannies while listening to the soundtrack. If you're okay with a slow paced, exploration-heavy walking simulator, this is worth a try.

Don't take my word 100% but I became bored of it from the start. Game feels pretentious with the narrative and the gameplay that takes you between story points is extremly shallow. Like others the game feels more like a student project which is not bad as he is a solo dev! However I don't recommend getting this unless it is on sale.

Tldr; Get on sale unless you: 1 wanna help a solo dev. 2 Have a case study as a solo game dev yourself.

Words Just Can't Describe...
This masterpiece is one of those little games that gets overlooked, but words just can't describe how amazing it is. From the atmosphere, the art, right down to the heartwarming storyline...it is simply one of those games you MUST play to believe. It's easy to get lost in it and forget real life for a while, and isn't that why we play games to begin with?? Too many games have just a story, or just great art, but this true indie gem has both and much, much more. So why not become a fox and jump in for a real adventure...you won't be sorry!!

-SPOILERS AHEAD-

At first I thought this may as well be a very boring walking simulator, with a fox. You do have to look for this beam of light and dig on that spot to hear their stories. But alas, after finishing it just now, I find that this game is actually pretty good. I personally see this as a story about death and loss of someone who you hold dear. For the fox, it's her 3 cubs, for Joseph, it's his father (but I'm guessing his wife Rachel had a miscarriage due to the empty nursery that has been painted and a lot of boxes.) The story itself mainly focuses on the relationship Joseph had with his father, and that story being correlated to the fox trying to find her 3 children.

The environment itself is very pretty, and you can explore as much as you want. I feel like I'm playing this game a bit too rushed, but from what I can tell, this could be a very relaxing game.

The way that they convey the stories and the visuals surrounding it at certain points are just beautiful. Some are very powerful indeed, like the ending where you get to actually type out a message to your cubs (so make sure you collect a lot of those stars, it determines how may words you can type, I got 111). Or where Joseph followed the glowing white fox to what seems to be the first tree. And Rachel telling her childhood where we follow the glowing deer and everything looking like it's in space alongside all the reflective water.

Overall, if you like stories where I think it's kind of a slow paced, pretty nature scenery, and also lots of walking/running/jumping as a fox. I recommend you buy this game.

P.S.
I hope you're not sad, because I was kind of sad knowing that all of her 3 cubs died. And probably the wolf killed them all. Feels bad you can't save them.
I just can't with this story, the guys voice, the music, the pacing, all feels trite and scripted. Like, i just don't believe anything this guy is saying, i wish he would stop talking.
The graphics are average, the game looks unfinished. The preview looked better than the actual game.
The controls don't feel good, the fox moves in such an unnatural way.
The music is over-the-top melodramatic. The sound design also feels unfinished.
I can see how this could've been good, but as it is, it's not. It doesn't feel like a final version of a game.

Simple gameplay with more emphasis on the story which is communicated through dialogue between a man and his wife. The scenery is beautiful, with bright vibrant color palettes that perfectly match the mood of the story. A little bit emotional, especially if you've dealt with loss in your past. Something that was very off putting however, was the male voice actor. His mic picks up lip smacking/dry mouth noises. Other than that, its a short and emotional experience, with a story that centers around loss.

So simple, yet so beautiful and emotional. I just adore this cute little foxie. I feel bad for what happened to her tho. I'd reccomend this game for people who enjoy simple stories with simple aesthetics. For some it might feel like a walking simulator but try to listen to the conversation between Joseph and Rachel. You then might even reflect on some aspects of your family life for a second and maybe, just maybe, rethink some of your life choices.

BTW I love what they did at the end with a secret message. Just heartwarming.

The First Tree is a beautiful exploration game with a deep touching story.
I was fascinated by the game's art style and all the beautiful colours! ????
The soundtrack was also very soothing and the voices were soft, it made me feel relaxed throughout the whole game. ????
If you like beautiful landscapes then you'll most certainly enjoy wandering all around the world and admire the view. ????

The gameplay is pretty basic, you play as a fox and just run around exploring, listening to the husband and wife's conversation while collecting stars and items. And discover more on the husband's life by digging up items.
The game is pretty short (2-6h) with a total of 6 unique levels.

Concerning Achievement Hunters ????:
Unfortunately, without a guide, the game can be very frustrating for achievement hunters and trying to get all the stars and items will break the game's experience. Since the game is short I recommend hunting them on a second playthrough.
As stated on the note bellow, you can't replay levels, so if you miss a star or item, you need to replay the whole game and collect them all again.

Note: The game has no save option, it automatically saves at the beginning of each level. There are no chapter select, so if you wish to replay a level you need to restart the whole game

I think I'm probably the target audience for this game.
I adore emotional set-pieces that serve as greater metaphors for a story, e.g. the Beginner's Guide, and I appreciate exploration/voiceover games like Gone Home. Also foxes, who doesn't love foxes? So why the bad review?

I can't recommend this game for a couple of reasons but the main one is that I found aspects of the gameplay quite irritating.
First off is the progression to the next level
The first level is a large snowy valley and as you explore - as a fox - you find toys and memories from the narrator's childhood. The space is large and expansive so you can run around in any particular order to gather up little white stars (for an as-of-yet undisclosed reason) and dig up memories that initiate the voiceover. I found some of the stars on high vistas on the other side of the valley and when at the top could see the larger set-pieces I hadn't explored yet and noticed how they seemed to be joined by a faint blue mist. After exploring the majority of the valley I went up into the hills to see if I could spot anymore stars before going back to the main path at the base of the valley but as I turned a corner everything faded to black and I got pushed into the next level. There was no way to back-track without restarting the game and losing around 45 min of gameplay. So I still don't know if I 'dug up' all the memories or if I left that level prematurely - I definitely didn't explore one area with a truck and a bunch of stars. The same thing happened in level 2, where I unceremoniously fell into a hole in the ground and missed exploring the last area. Given that the whole game is about story, this is pretty frustrating to not know how you've triggered the level transition and if you missed content.

Empty space
Running around and collecting things in this game is basically a way to give you stuff to do whilst the narrators do their thing. This works relatively well but for the large swaths of empty space - it can take a long time to run from one part to the other and it's pretty tedious. Some parts purposely retain empty space to allow you to process an emotionally significant story moment but there are only a handful.

No clear path
I mentioned before that as relatively open-world as the level-design is there are some points which trigger progression to the next level whether or not you've finished exploring.
In level 3 - which has vibrant jungle flora and huge chunks of obsidian - I thought i'd triggered such a point but then didn't know how to progress. Essentially that part of the game has a forest-like open space and then a cave-like area with black rock. I solved the first 2/3 of a glowing boulder puzzle in the open area, saving the obsidian for last as I assumed it would be the trigger to the next level. After completing the last glowing boulder puzzle in the obsidian area there was a sound of rocks moving but nothing really changed and there was no fade to black. It took me half an hour of trying to climb over the rocks to realise the next-level-trigger must be in a different part of the terrain and eventually scrambled over some thorns and found it.
This is basically just poor design: in setting up the next-level trigger to be in one specific place with no clear direction the player either leaves too early or can't find it.

Overall gameplay
It was mostly boring, not enough to do between story snippets and the environement wasn't pretty enough to keep me engaged.

Story
The story is fairly basic - classic parent/child communication issues - but it got me shedding a few tears at the end. I didn't like the main character or his voice actor overall. Both were overly dramatic and yet generic.

Overall then, it's not a huge game but what it tries to do in storytelling is mired by boring gameplay and shoddy level design such that when i reached the emotional ending I was more annoyed than anything else.

The thought of this game is super cute and beautiful, but no matter how nice this game is straight up boring.
the main problem is that you run for 2-3 hours straight without anything really happening, yeah you have to jump here and there.
Also depth when capturing th glowing objectives in the game is horrible, you dont know if it is rigt in front of you or 3 meters away.

When i started this game i thought it would be a nice game to relax to, but this is just sad, i was happy when it was over, and thats not the feeling i want to get, i always want more when its a ok game.

Well that was a disappointment. I generally like walking simulators, but not this one. You play an un-killable, double-jumping fox that wonder through waaay to huge environments, bumping into badly placed invisible walls while using sub-standard controls. Once in a while you hear voice lines from two angsty, whiny adults talking about their childhood. If they were going for angsty and whiny, then I guess that the voice acting is pretty OK.
The environments are huge and though they look OK, you quickly loose any interest in exploring them. There are out-of-place objects scattered throughout the environment that mildly support the narrative. The first time you come across one you feel like it is kinda cool, but since they have no real meaning, you quickly loose interest and motivation in finding them.
There are also some stars scattered throughout the environment. Unless you are an achievement hunter, you have no motivation to find them and they are placed in all extremities of the dull map so again they offer no motivation to explore. And then there are the secrets, which are generally impossible to find unless you cheat and read a guide.
The music is meh and very seldomly achieve to reflect or encourage the mood that they were trying to build up.
If you read the guides, apparently there is an easter egg that requires a motherload of work to get to. Again, the game gave me no motivation to go for it (even though I am an achievement hunter).
Overall a tedious, drawn out trip through an uninteresting angsty narrative with a fox that has no point in being there.

It was weird. Honestly wasn't sure what the game was trying to do. It felt like it wanted to tell a story but it also wants you to explore the map. It does this by not telling you what to do and throwing map objectives all over the map. It's not a terrible game it just seems confused about its true objectives. Especially if you look at the achievments that you can unlock that imply that it just wants you to run around thereby breaking up the story as it tries to tell it. And of course you can just ignore all that but wait you actually can't becuase like i said it doesnt tell you were to go, so you have to do it anyways.

I generally really like this type of game, but this game is far more irritating than enjoyable. There are invisible walls EVERYwhere, so you constantly have to double back, the controls are pretty janky, the narration is self-indulgent drivel, and the story of the fox that you're playing has absolutely nothing to do with the conversation that you're listening to as you play. It could be a nice little relaxing game if it weren't so damned annoying at every turn. Even if you like slow-paced walking simulators like me, I'd give this one a miss. There are much better games for much less money.

Beautiful design, but tedious gameplay. It doesn't feel fun or even enjoyable, it's just a chore

I'm sure the story pans out well, but I just couldn't bring myself to get past the second level. Clunky movement, boring collect-a-thon mechanics, and a frustrating powerup system (Spend a few minutes collecting 3 sets of butterflies to enable super jump, then miss the jump and have to go collecting them again. Didn't think I'd rage quit such a calm game)

Don't recommend at all. Don't understand the hype behind it. Truly style over substance.

It's really beautiful and everything. But once again I ask all the game developers. Please stop making games where you have to aimlessly run around the map not knowing where to go. And start making direct road games. You don't know how frustrating it is to start a game, go to one direction because you thought you'll go to another one later but end up into the next location without going back. Not to miss how playing in the second area it became so boring, run all the way just to collect some important stars and then go all the way back.
I got this game on summer sale, lucky me, but for someone to spend 10 Eur. on that... Not so sure.
The audio is calming. Story minimal could be better.
Add up what's annoying me again this is just another game (books, movies, stories, etc.) which puts wolves on the bad page as an enemy here, people - can't you find more new enemies instead of discriminating same animal species?
For the sake, I'll try to complete it. One day...
Audio: 7/10
Graphics: 9/10
Story: 5/10
Game: 5/10 (Would be more if not long, boring running around the map.)

Edit: Another room and I can't know where the f should I go just running and running until hiting imaginary wall...

Too advertised, many unfair reviews... (thinking i fall victim of paid reviews...)
Let's see some points:

- Game is less than two hours....!!!
- Game physics, especially fox movements, are clunky and illusive. There are many issues with movements.
- All is about running into vast areas, and storytelling... storytelling it's good, but it's not gaming...!!!
- Fox goes slow as a turtle.... the game is about waiting... walking, running..... lack of active gaming.

+ Nice color pallet and overall aesthetic (which is good, but it's not by itself gaming... it's another form of art maybe)
+ Nice fox' standing animations
+ Nice dialogs, even if too cliche nowdays the family loss etc.... but fine

I have over 1400 games in my Steam account, and the vast majority of them are still unplayed. So I'm dedicating an hour to each of these games and writing a series of One Hour Reviews. An hour isn't very long to judge a game on, so think of this as more of a first impression, and take this review in the spirit in which it's given. Be sure to read other reviews from players who have spent more time in the game.

One Hour Reviews #76 - The First Tree

The First Tree starts with a narrator telling the story of a vivid dream he had, that of a fox on a snowy mountain searching for her cubs. And I am playing as the fox.

It's hard not to be immediately engrossed in the game. The starting environment is beautiful, with trees everywhere, and the sun shining down casting shadows on the snow. A few snow flurries fall and I listen to the gentle breeze.

The First Tree bills itself an exploration game, and I can definitely agree with that. Along the way, as I continued to search, I'd uncover various objects and places related to the narrator's life, his challenges growing up, and his relationship with his father. As someone who has lost his dad, I wasn't quite prepared for the story to hit so close to home. I'd say more but I hesitate to spoil the story.

The story, the atmosphere, and the music all combine together into a pretty great experience. The gameplay itself is what I'd consider to be the weakest part of the game, but even then I wouldn't call it bad gameplay, rather there are just some nitpicks to highlight.

My first nitpick is that I didn't always have a sense of what you needed to do to finish a chapter. I found the transition from the first to the second chapter kind of jarring, like some invisible timer just expired and the scene cut to black before transitioning to a new area.

My other nitpick is the game doesn't have an autosave, so it only saves at the start of each chapter. Combined with the above nitpick, this means you won't really have any good idea of how much longer you need to play before the next save. That said, it's also a pretty short game, so I don't really consider this to be a big deal. (It's not so short that I beat it within my 60 minutes).

I think for some people, the fact that it's a short game may be a negative, but I still think it's worth the price, even more so if you can catch it on a bit of a sale. This one I can happily recommend.

Holy Mother of God! This thing broke me. The game had me in tears almost from the beggining to the end. Hauntingly beautiful and sad with hope and poetru overflowing from every corner. Everyone should play this, it's such a human and vulnerable story. Not a game for gameplay (which is not horrible) but for exploring places, narrative, caracter and emotions. Thank you David Wehle for this profound and beautiful experience.

Not awful, but I wouldn’t give it the full price. The only strong feature I would praise is the art/scenario. Other than that, it’s a melodramatic story with a lot of walking/running. It’s a short game that can feel too long.
If you’re looking for sensitive and good games, try Gris, What Remains of Edith Finch, Inside, Submerged, Abzû , Seen or even Everything. If you liked this one you may also enjoy Nero, Koral, Kholat or Never Alone, but I definitely recommend taking a look at the seven I listed first.

A touching story with a beautiful soundtrack.

But clunky mechanics.

Could use a bit of lighting around all the areas and maybe restrict parts of the world since the end in dead ends. Activating obsidian stones in one level had me constantly jumping and smashing the B button trying to get the stupid glowing orb to progress the story. Just a lot of abstract stuff these kind of games do that are irritating.

But overall it was a decent game.n

I have just played GRIS and I have to say it was one of the best games I have ever played in my Life. It’s not too shabby!

Over this lovely lockdown period I seem to have wandered towards scenic walking simulators for a bit, if you can’t walk around outside in real life why not do it in a game? Even better, why not do it as a fox? Good stuff.
That was essentially the only thing I was looking for when I bought this game while it was on sale. I didn’t look much into it, I saw the walking simulator tag, that it looked quite pretty and of course that you could play as a fox. In more ways than one I got more than I bargained for.

I suppose the only way to add incentive to get people to actually look around in walking simulators is by placing collectables. For that reason I can completely understand why devs do it in these games. I think for me the collectable aspect of it always takes away from being able to take in the environment or story if there is one. I’m not a great fan of that so was a little bummed as a completionist when I saw there was a load of collectables in this game you had to get to 100% the game. That’s just me having a bit of a whinge though in honestly, as it’s a bit tedious as you really have to search the maps, but it’s still not impossible and at the end of the day I still did it.

So in what other ways did I get more than I bargained for?
Well, this game turned out to be a pretty emotional one. At first I found the narration a bit cringe-worthy, I understand it’s pretty much a one-man team with the help of I am assuming his wife, but I can’t say that the voice acting is particular great in my eyes. Nevertheless, you can kind of look past it eventually. I found the story a little bit pretentious and in the same kind of way, it was something I kind of eventually just looked past.

As the game progresses, things unfold and in terms of the narrated story I wasn’t particularly moved. This was a game around two parallels though, and the paralleled story, which is what concludes right at the end, was what got me.

Essentially for me the ending of the game is the best part of the game, and what makes it worth the while. I will try not to say too much as it’s best you experience it for yourself (don’t worry, anything spoiler-eque will be blacked out), but the game ended up being far more emotional than I expected surrounding a theme we can all relate to.
The game has an ongoing theme of death, and hinted at themes of afterlife and reincarnation. The two stories that unfold both in narration and through action eventually interconnect with each other at the end in a way that I assume is open to interpretation.
There is also a little feature of the game you discover at the end which I thought was quite a unique and interesting idea. It brings a heartfelt and real interaction into the game I haven’t seen before now, which really helps bring it’s themes to life and make it an emotional experience.
Towards the end of your journey as the fox, you’re asked to write a few words which you would choose to send to the afterlife if you could. You then start a new journey, and receive a real message that someone else had written from the afterlife. This was quite nice as you know that somebody real put thought into giving you that message.
This game wasn’t what I was expecting, and it wasn’t perfect but it was still lovely and worthwhile. For the developers second game it’s something really to be proud of!

If you are also looking to kill a few hours in lockdown with a relaxing walking simulator this is definitely a good candidate, just be prepared for this to be a bit more than just a walking-around-as-a-fox simulator.

Some of the areas are nice to look at, and the ambiance is one I'm fond of in games.

However, the narration is one-dimensional and stilted, and constantly (and I really do mean constantly) distracts from the game itself. I found myself avoiding optional content just so extra narration wouldn't play. Also, there's a point where you can't tell where you're supposed to go and I apparently chose the WRONG way because I just fell through the ground and there didn't seem to be a way back other than to restart the area, so I just gave up and stopped playing.

I can see where they were trying to go with this, but it just didn't work. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this game.

This was on the cusp of being a recommended game

the reasons why I don't recommend is for many of the gameplay decisions incorporated into the game design
for example the butterflies powerup is used in 2 areas located right next to each other and platforming with them felt bad in the first place and simply not incorporating them into the game would have been better. then there were the wisp rock timing game that again why was this game element even incorporated as again it was irritating more than anything. and then when you are the human the objective isn't pronounced (especially the target reticle that goes from a grey to white color when you can interact with something)

I also felt that many parts of the game were simply unpolished where textures would bleed way over to where they shouldn't or many places of jagged landscape that were not smoothed out well with the terrain editor

basically the games strengths are not in its gameplay and much more on its visuals, story, and music which the gameplay actively detracts from and it is interspaced evenly throughout the game

and then again with the visuals and story they were both just ok (the visuals were unique but many places felt unfinished and the story sometimes felt like it slightly jumped around in the narrative) and it was the music that was doing the heavy lifting with this game

if the game is on a good sale and it interests you then go ahead but I can't even recommend this game for kids because of the gameplay mechanics which they will get stuck on

i'm sorry but i cant recommend The First Tree. The story is nice , pretty emotional but sadly falls short on everything else.
The game is a walking simulator (which is ok for story games) but most of the walking is just nothing, just waiting for the next story bit. I couldnt help but just get bored between the story bits which was a bother when i was trying to relate.

i would suggest buying it on a sale if you really want to listen to the story here.

I have never reviewed a game before now, and it is a shame that my first review has to be a negative one, but this needs to be said. I personally really enjoy achievement hunting, and this game has literally made it one of the dumbest, most frustrating experiences ever. This being due to not being able to go back when stuff is missed (so then you have to play the whole game over and get it perfect, which can take hours), and by achievements simply not registering even though I am more than 100% that I completed it perfectly as expected. The game looks nice, I will give it that, but that is pointless when the story is lackluster and there are a lot of times when it is just dead silence with no explanation as to what you are doing, or why anything actually matters. If you are on the fence about the purchase, honestly just save yourself the money.

I absolutely love atmospheric games, where you get to explore the world and discover a story. If you'd think this is similar to Journey, it sure tries to be, but it's nowhere near that level.

The controls are wonky, the game feels directionless - there is no greater, overarching goal to keep you going. You are a low-poly 3D fox, running around huge maps with nothing on them, except for stars and occasional piece of narration.

While the narration is good and the atmosphere is alright, the characters revealed in the narration are not engaging and make the game feel a lot more like a self-expression rather than something that was created for other people to experience.

Get this game if all you want is to roam around and get lost within yourself. Don't get it if you're looking for a story or a captivating experience.

This game consists of wandering around, looking for stars, and finding beacons which played the sounds of people talking and going through the story of the game. It was a very boring and frustrating experience. The area you play in is unnecessarily large and you spend a lot of time walking and backtracking because you can't figure out where to go. I kept missing the beacons and getting the story out of order. I spent AGES not knowing where to go and wandering in circles. This game attempts to have a deep message, but it just comes off as shallow and forced.

So i do have feelings after all. Thanks for reminding me.
Who would have thought that a cartoony game about a fox can feel so real.
This litttle game truly is precious.

The First Tree is all flash without any substance. It tries to say something profound without actually saying anything. The overall narrative is pretty one-dimensional, and doesn't try to make any meaningful connections between the fox and the narrator.

The graphics and visuals are beautiful, yes, but there's so much emptiness in the environments that it's just a lot of the same scenery repeated over and over again. The levels are needlessly big in relation to the movement speed, the controls are clunky, and collecting stars doesn't do anything besides increment a counter. You'd think a pretty game like this would at least place stars where you could see something pretty. Instead, they're placed almost randomly, sometimes they serve to guide the player but most times they're hidden behind rocks, under rocks, on top of rocks, in fact, just a lot of big boring rocks in this game.

Comparing this game to games like Journey, Firewatch and Shelter is a good joke. This game is not worth its price.
