Neither Incredible Nor Adventurous
Van Helsing is a simple Diablo clone with a throwaway story, poorly voiced cheesily written characters (though not in a good way), and a loot system that will have you asking how long to finish the game rather than inspire you to keep replaying for better rewards. The highlight of the game is exploring the maps which are well designed, and atmospheric but unfortunately that in itself is not enough of a compelling experience for me to recommend the title. Even on sale Van Helsing is a waste of time that you're better off putting somewhere else.

Gameplay
In this game, you are the monster hunter Van Helsing and your job is to well...kill monsters. The game revolves around, again, killing monsters. You are called to Borgovia to help out as a monster hunter. Gameplay is very similar to Diablo style games. I believe ARPG is typically used to describe the type of game. Not entirely sure though. This is generally a type of game that you kill a ton of enemies and pick up loot from them. The main difference I would say you have here is that this game you have a companion, Lady Katarina to help you. You can choose to do a type of Tank and Ranged, though this might not work out super well all the time. Lady Katarina is probably one of the biggest highlights of this game. The quips and conversations with her actually give her a unique personality. Unfortunately, with the good there is always some bad. There are a ton of enemies in this game. I mean a ton. I would say a typical pull is around 7-15 enemies at one time for one group. And each group is spaced VERY close together. And believe it or not, there is actually not enough enemies to adequately have you leveled for later areas. I ended up receiving items 2-3 items over my level upon entering the last areas. Add to this that I believe there is some damage mitigation for level differences since pulls were really aggravating at the beginning of the level and slowly got better as I leveled up in an area, and it seems like more XP needs to be awarded or you need more enemies. The game by default keeps maps cleared, so one way to go around this is to enable respawn in the options. One final good thing is that there is a casual difficulty, and based on what I am seeing in reviews and guides, there appears to be no achievement penalty for playing on an easier mode. (I played on Normal).Controls
Controls are typically keyboard and mouse with the mouse used to attack and move. However, you can use a controller if you want. Based on how the game is coded, if you want to use a controller you need to have it plugged in before you launch the game. Also, you need to have the controller unplugged when you want to use the keyboard and mouse until you switch off the auto-detect setting. Speaking of settings, you can easily rebind any keys that you want. I chose to rebind the movement keys (I prefer to have a main option besides mouse movement) to WASD. For some reason, this game has a couple of rather useless keybinds (like Glory Panel) for the main story bound to keys around WASD. Overall, it controls as I would expect from this type of game.Visuals
This game have very high visuals so that it looks pretty. This game starts out in back country areas. So it's forested, but it's still kinda dark/gloomy. Eventually you'll move into the main city area, which is dark and gloomy. Unfortunately, this game does not appear to be made with anything above 1080p60 in mind. Options are included for 1440p, but no framerate options are available past 60 except for unlimited. I had quite a few issues trying to wrestle with the graphics of this game. I managed to get it in an okay spot but that did not always fix some of the issues. I think it would've worked better to cap at 60hz. There were times I would drop down to around 93 FPS from 143 FPS and occasionally would stutter. I got some real bad hitching at one part but I think that is CPU or hard-drive related. One last thing, ALL cutscenes are locked to 30FPS according to my framerate counter. There isn't a ton of movement, but it's kinda noticeable and doesn't make sense when everything else would theoretically be made for 60fps.Audio
I personally think the Audio is this games biggest weakness, beyond the absurd amount of enemies. At default settings, stuff is fairly loud, except for voice over. Starting with the voice over, this was generally decent, especially for main characters. There are a few instances where it isn't that great though (last boss *cough*). Moving on to battle sounds. This is quickly the most aggravating part of the audio. Many of the monsters you fight are extremely annoying with the sound effects they make. Lastly, the music. In some locations I didn't really notice the music, but one or two tracks became really apparent after a while and it appears they are used in a lot of the locations. It gets kinda tiresome because they are kinda repetitive in how they sound. I actually turned down the music volume so I didn't have to hear it as much. I personally think some of the sound design could have been improved, but it is what it is.Miscellaneous
I started up this game because I had an itch to play Path of Exile but didn't really want to download that and have it patch every other day. Maybe this jaded my opinion a bit on it, but I really don't feel like it scratched that itch. It's unfortunate. The story is okay. It's not super amazing since it's kinda basic, but it's at least semi-interesting. I won't go into more details cuz spoilers. Pathing. In forested areas, there are bushes without leaves that prevent you from going through them but are not exactly obvious that you can't. It's more just an annoyance than anything else. This game features monster initiated crowd control, pulls, and teleports. I honestly find these extremely irritating. Especially since the CCs do not prevent the enemies from killing you while you are trying to break out as they are destructible traps. I felt the pacing for this game was just about right. The end was about when I was starting to get tired of it, and I was killing everything and doing all the side quests. So about 20 hours seems to be about right for this game's playtime. Lastly, this game has quite a few easter eggs, some are obvious, others not so much. I'm sure there are plenty more that I missed.Summary
You're probably thinking, gee Py, that's a ton of anger spewed there, why the thumbs up? Well the reason is I wouldn't say it's a horrible game. I feel some of the issues, especially with how the graphics were looking is a result of me trying to play a rather OLD game. 1440p/144hz wasn't really mainstream then. Others, like sounds, are completely subjective and some people may really like them. The remaining issues of busloads of enemies and CC aren't necessarily things that break the game. Plus, it has some shine-through characteristics, like Lady Katarina. So overall, I would say it's okay. Not great. but also not bad. It was fairly enjoyable.

- The interactions between Lady Katarina and Van Hellsing were really cool. They had some funny and sarcastic dialogues.
- Rich monster and item pool.
- Great Side Quests, i'm glad they weren't just typical side quests like in other games. It's always boring to collect quest items, and kill a certain amount of monsters for an NPC.
- There was a dungeon where you build traps and destroy the monster waves (btw you still play as Van Helsing not just watch it), but yeah i was surprised to see a Tower Defense game in an Action-RPG.
- Story was kinda short and complicated, i didn't realize that it would end that quickly i mean i was still searching for a decent weapon for myself but i found myself fighting the final boss so randomly.
- Some monsters were so FAST and hitting so hard. I've never died as many times in any other game as i died in this one.
- I've played as Thaumaturge class and i legit hated his skill tree, every single ability was so weak as in damage and AoE.
