Meiner Meinung nach ist The Sojourn ein großartiger Puzzle-Plattformer! Wer The Talos Principle gemocht hat, sollte hier eigentlich nichts falsch machen.

Game starts with fifteen levels that are almost entirely logical combination puzzles. Then switches to one of those exasperating just-in-time challenges that require you to clickthenturnthenclickthenmovethenturnandrunlikeHell in tenth-of-a-second windows. I know there are lots of people who like those games. But getting fifteen levels in without needing any of the necessary reflexes and other skills, only to find the game has become unplayable without them, is utterly maddening. See, we just can't do those things. No problem with people who can and who like those games. But why design a game around a particular style of play, let your player get used to it and feel like they're settling in, only to add a needless time-limit feature that calls for precise action? This wasn't an action game for the first fifteen levels. All of a sudden, you can't proceed without being a Ninja.

Just an awful let-down.

The Sojourn is a comparatively expansive first person puzzle game where you embark on a journey to learn the merits of life. The game has over 50 puzzles that are mostly presented as their own little levels that you enter through portals and such.

In every puzzle, your objective is to get to the end and release a small caged ball of light. To do that, you manipulate the powers of dark and light. You enter the dark world through specific platforms or gates and, while in it, you can swap places with statues to open gates via switches or move around, make walkways appear and manipulate darkness rays.

Switching between darkness and light to handle the various facets of the levels is very fun and the game is, overall, very fair. Most puzzles are on the manageable side, but there are quite a few headscratchers too. The levels are small enough, though, to never be frustrating or unfair. The mechanics slowly expand over the course of the game and it is just the right length to not get too repetitive.

I can't find much fault with it, but if I had to criticize something, it would be the lack of the run button (though it would probably break some puzzles). The artstyle is clean and the soundtrack is surprisingly good. If you are a fan of first person puzzle games in the vein of Talos Principle and the like, then The Sojourn is another excellent title to play and a definite recommendation!

I'm grudgingly giving this a thumbs up. The puzzle design is unique and absolutely brilliant. So why grudgingly? The rest of the experience frequently ruined it for me. The blindfolded statues clearly indicate there's supposed to be a story, but it's not remotely clear what it's supposed to be. Then there's the random enigmatic sayings that would make a fortune cookie jealous (or, frequently, confused). These started out as a bit odd, but quickly became annoying. I did like the ending though.

Pros:
- Unique puzzle mechanics that are added at a good pace to keep things interesting
- Great level design
- Good difficulty balance - frequently challenging but rarely difficult enough to be frustrating, resulting in a feeling of accomplishment upon figuring it out.
- Most levels contain optional scrolls for an added challenge
- Great music
- Gorgeous visuals

Cons:
- There's no running. This isn't a big problem during puzzles, but is often frustrating between levels when you're slowly walking through experiencing whatever the story is supposed to be
- The statues and achievements make it clear there's a story, but it's as clear as mud. It doesn't seem to be a case of 'up to interpretation' either.
- So what about the scrolls? Surely they tell you something about what's going on right? Nope, just more vaguely wise-sounding word salad that I found often ruined any sense of accomplishment at solving the puzzle. To be fair, a lot of these were quite nice, and I really liked the final one if you collect them all. It really felt like they were reaching for a lot of them though, like they needed a certain number of wise sayings to put on the scrolls but ran out half way through.

Verdict: 7/10

Puzzles for the sake of solving puzzles in a beautiful and calm environment.

Positive:
- Beautiful visuals. In the first two areas I spent more time looking over the edges and into the background to admire the scenery than acutally solving the puzzles.
- New puzzle elements which complement/expand the main light/dark mechanic are introduced gradually and they all use different game mechanics (distance walked, timing, holding and moving objects, temporary and persistent binary state changes, line of sight, etc.)
- The visual effects and HUD make it very clear what is happening in the puzzles and what is required to solve them.

Neutral:
- There are no built-up rewards except progressing from one puzzle to the next, and the bonus challenges don't have any rewards either until you complete all of them. So the game is for those who simply enjoy solving a puzzle.
- The bonus challenges are inside the puzzle levels themselves and they unlock after solving the main puzzle (i.e. another part of the level and a second goal are revealed, but the original level remains). Unfortunately they are very inconsistent in terms of how difficult they are, how much new elements they add to the level and how much backtracking is required. There are also real bonus levels at the end of each area and they do a much better job at offering a more difficult bonus puzzle.
- In the first area the puzzles are all put into one environment and after reaching the end of one, you go through a door to the next without any loading. You also see how much of the area you did and have left from the stars on the door. There are only small walking sections between the areas. So I was walking through this city environment solving puzzles to get to the end, and I was excited by the progression and expected the game to go on like this ... but then from the second area on they put in awfully simple and small level hubs where you complete 4-5 challenges and then walk to the next hub. Towards the end it's just a linear set of doors to the challenges. Very disappointing.

Negative:
- I have no idea what the story is supposed to be. A game this focused on puzzles doesn't need a story so there shouldn't have been an attempt at creating one, because it turned out to be confusing and distracts from the puzzle experience.

The game still launches Steam VR and the developer has not fixed this for over a year. The lack of responsiveness on this simple fix reeks of amateurism.

Aside from that The Sojourn is great: the visuals and music are really nice and do a good job of setting the tone of the game. The walking speed feels slow at first but I do think it helps force you to soak in the experience which is the standout element of this game, and the set pace does help in some puzzles by letting you know that sometimes you're definitely not going to be fast enough on foot to make a timed section and need to find another way instead of trying to be faster. Also I'm not sure why there's a jump since it's barely a hop and isn't used in a single (intended) solution but whatever.

The difficulty is pretty perfect for me, nice to have a game where I don't have to rack my brain or look up a guide if I'm stuck, just listen to some music and mess around with some easily-digestible mechanics. The last chapter does get difficult though, but it's a nice challenge to wrap up the game. Rotating the beam tower is backwards, not the way people want to rotate, watched a few videos and saw people also doing it backwards each time on controller and keyboard. What makes the puzzles so good is there is no fluff or red herrings, just a clean and precise puzzle with walkways and barriers in specific orientations that help keep a player on track by clearly showing what you are intentionally blocked from interacting with in certain spots which guides you to looks for other interactions. Really appreciated that there was no platforming or reaction-based elements, just a pure 3d puzzle game. The star of the show is the visuals. Really like how the eye gets bigger in the final section. Unfortunately there is no level select and you cannot backtrack, so once you beat the game your only option to continue playing is to start completely over.

If you liked games like Portal, The Talos Principle, but wanted something more relaxing and a bit simpler,
you might enjoy this title.

It's a simple game of teleportation-based puzzles, set in the usual sky island environment. The scenery is what you'd hope for from the Unreal engine, pleasing and not too distracting.

It's definitely worth having if you want to put yourself in a relaxed mood, without going to sleep in the process.

bit of a let down. most puzzle are kinda linear. no too difficult.
pace is really slow.
story is... something?
The 'wisdoms' you can unluck are just simple sayings written a bit more cryptic and mystical... i don't see any relation to the rest with it either.
I like puzzle games but i can't get myself to finish this. just too plain boring.
pretty but shallow

You like pure puzzling? Then you'll probably like this. Not much else to say here, it's what it says on the label - disregard the 'Adventure' tag though, unless your bar for interesting narratives is very low.
A bunch of puzzles and another bunch of optional challenges make for a fairly long journey (if you want) through some pretty environments - you wouldn't wanna play this game just for the graphics or the bare-bones story though, so you can just try the first bunch of puzzles and see if you like it, because it'll stay that way with some new elements popping up every now and then.

If you like the visual style but not necessarily the gameplay, you might like RiME or The Witness instead. Maybe Etherborn, which has a similar lack of narrative.

There are some amazing puzzles in this game, a great game IMO if you like first person type puzzles like The Talos Principle or Portal. Some are on the easy side for sure but (for me) there are definitely some nice, satisfying head-scratchers.

Also: absolutely gorgeous.

Only complaint: the walking is too slow/no sprint button, but that may have been because you could cheese some puzzles that way.

I received the game from a friend because of an event that we do where we give eachother random games.
The game looked pretty good but I hoped for a few more mechanics to solve puzzles. The puzzles were pretty challanging but the story was minimal. I was kinda sad when I completed the first floor of the academy towerish just to find a few more statues of dudes and more doors that I had to complete.

Its still a good game if you like to solve puzzles :D

You know that friend you have in college who just discovered philosophy and thinks they've reached enlightenment? That's Sojourn. All the pretense and exterior beauty of philosophy and none of the meaningful substance. For better solving and more philosophically impactful story play Talos Principle or The Witness... or probably a million other titles.

After the first hour I was sure I was going to give this a bad review, but it picked up. Overall the game lacks the exploration that one usually expects from a game like this, and the fact that it is just puzzle after puzzle with tiny bits of story is what stops this from being a great game. The puzzles in the second half are pretty good though.

It's a very beautifully slightly low poly game; with, for me personally, a very refreshing way of puzzling.
I do not think its a game that you could play in one sitting, but its very well suited for playing for 2-3 levels at a time, and then resuming your other activities.

I've seen quite a few people complain that there is no rewards..
GUYS. This game is a reward in itself. Beatiful design, amazingly soothing OST.
If you have no patience, don't get the game. Just don't.

This is an excellent game if you're into puzzle games. In the beginning the puzzles seem way too easy, but eventually they will become quite difficult. Very nice visuals, but unfortunately the storyline isn't very clear.

A surprisingly good little puzzler with very few complaints. The three biggest would be the FOV is very narrow, the movement is painfully slow and and the puzzles (at least in the beginning) are very repetitive. Aside from those, the visuals are stunning, the music is moving and story is intriguing.

Fun puzzles and interesting visuals. Not much story, but what there is is interesting.

My biggest complaint is that the game doesn't tell you when you will advance to the next section and not let you come back to complete optional puzzles. So, if you want to complete everything, make sure to do it before moving on or you will not be able to do it later.

This is a challenging first person puzzle game. The puzzles are unique and deserve a 10/10! This involves many portal techniques. If you like first person puzzle games, this is the one! The only bizarre part is the artwork and statues tell some silent story that's pointless, but it sort of grew on me.

Beautiful game with one of the more unique puzzle mechanics I have seen. Puzzles are are challenging especially the later ones in each world although some of it is more from a long list of operations to do. The story is generic and has no bearing on the puzzles whatsoever. It’s there just for flavour.
Overall there is nothing wrong with this game and its stand out is its unique puzzle mechanic. Puzzle design and story are all normal.

Although I enjoy a mental challenge, The Soujourn has finally worn me out. Gameplay can be summarized as 'solve puzzle' and then 'move to next puzzle.' Although the scenery is lovely and the sound track enjoyable, the repetitive nature of the challenges is exhausting. This is compounded by the fact that there is no reward for solving a puzzle. Instead, you just move along to the next one.

The story begins with following beings of light into an environment that unfolds before you. At first, it is delightful and I had a real sense of discovery and wonder. Each area has an average of 5 puzzles. 5 'scroll challenges' are added to these as you enter the second phase. From this point, each area then has around 10 puzzles. Multiply this by numerous areas and the number of conundrums is a bit daunting.

Puzzles consist of managing light and dark to power devices that direct energy, swap positions, and open bridges. Some have gates that turn light/dark on/off as you pass through. Others have barriers that change according to whether you are in light or dark mode. Lastly, many have a stationary or movable power source. Solutions are a mix of physics and resource management to create a path from each start to finish.

Although there are multiple scenes with statues, there is no narrative and no real story to follow (other than what can be inferred from the statues). Each scroll has a philosophical quote but these do not tie to any theme that I could follow.

At this point, I have over 26 hours invested and am approaching the completion of the third (out of four) major sections. I do not regret buying the game and have gotten my money's worth. But, I am not inclined to continue. While it is possible that 'all will be revealed' in the end, I don't have the stamina to complete this marathon.

This is not a bad game and I experienced no bugs or issues. However, I would recommend it with a major caveat. If you are a gamer who enjoys puzzles for the sake of puzzles, then The Soujourn may be right for you. If you prefer an adventure with a sense of forward motion or discovery, then you may want to look elsewhere.

The Sojourn

It's hard to say much about The Sojourn as it's a puzzle game without actual storytelling and it doesn't show us anything that we haven't seen in other games before.

It's that type of game where you can't say anything bad about it but at the same time it's rather tedious - it's very unlikely that you'd want to complete it in one play session. It has nice visuals, it's polished and there's pleasant music most of the time. However, there are better alternatives like The Witness that was available for many years, or great puzzlers with more entertaining gameplay like Lightmatter, or dozens of minimalistic puzzlers that may provide a similar level of challenge with simpler but smoother gameplay.

All in all, it's a decent game with good puzzles, nice visuals/atmosphere and slightly outdated game design/presentation so I'd recommend it to people who enjoy puzzle adventures with walking simulator mechanics and looking for more games of this genre. An easy skip or purchase with a solid discount for everyone else. 7/10

Nice [strike]Epic Games timed exclusive[/strike] puzzle game, 8/10 for me.

Estimated 8-10 hours for completion, most of it walking gently.

I had to go for the less than an hours play refund. If I'd persevered then maybe it would have improved but there was no obvious story line and the game play was linear and gave no indication that this would change at any time. The world looked really beautiful and I was looking forward to exploring but you have to follow these light fairies around all the time. The puzzles were just a variation on a theme and got boring very quickly.
