Durchweg hoher Schwierigkeitsgrad. Das Ende ist nicht ganz so toll.
*Edit 2017. Still awesome.

Has the same crappy glyph drawing system as Arx Fatalis. It was frustrating then, and it's frustrating now.

It's a cool idea but eventually it becomes more annoying than engaging. It works perfectly fine one minute, then the next it just doesn't work no matter what. I had to look up guides on how to draw the donor glyphs, which helped a ton but eventually even the guided drawing I used stopped working consistently as I got further in the game (not very far).

I really want to continue but I can't continue be interested in a game that intentionally wastes my time for no reason with such a poorly implemented glyph drawing mechanic

also annoying head bob with no option to turn it off. gave me a headache.

I do hope the dev either re-makes the game or makes a sequel that isn't so annoying to play because everything else about the game is amazing. However due to the crappy glyph drawing mechanic and the lack of in-game settings, I can't recommend.

If the amount of hours I've put into this game is any indication, I absolutely love it. It's one of my favourite games ever made and will remain that way for the rest of my life. That said, it isn't for everyone. It's incredibly difficult, even after you've played enough to understand all the mechanics. And those mechanics are not fully explained at the beginning of the game. Sometimes a character will lie to you about how the game works, or you'll hear conflicting statements. But, that is part of what makes this game so unique. If you're looking to get lost in a strange place and be confused, desperate, and awestruck all at once, give The Void a try. Avoid spoilers as much as possible and you won't regret it.

Is this a game? Is this a work of art? Even in the year 2021 the game looks good. Crawling through the game world must be what it would be like to be inside a painting. And the game is more like painting than gaming. Everything involves color: movement, defense, attack...color. Maybe if I were more of an artist I would be better at this game.

For me, the game was too different. Which makes me wish I could recommend this game since the gaming industry has too much of a tendency to do the same thing all the time since the same thing sells. Learning this games mechanics is the equivalent of an English speaker learning Chinese. Do I have time to learn another language? Do I have the desire? With movement in this game so painfully slow, I would say no to both. The game just wasn't fun.

Maybe you are an artist who does a little gaming. This game is for you. Perhaps you are retired and it seems like you have 27 hours of time on your hand every day. This game is for you. Do your days seem to be only 9 hours long and you need 27 more hours just to get yourself clothed and fed? This game is not for you. This game is not for me. This game isn't for most people.

This is a unique game, that attempts a poetic metaphor through gameplay.
There's a few caveats tho if you are considering getting into this game.
The poetic messages of this game sadly arent as deep as its presentation and execution. Its mostly a story about accepting the passing of time and this devs other game, Pathologic, probably has way more to say. Admitedly it is like comparing a poetry book to a theater play script.
The titilating lady nudity might have been dope to me when I was in my early 20s but I can hardly excuse it nowadays. If anything it distracts, since the characters themselves have some depth to them.
And now to the biggest caveat: even more than pathologic this game suffers from wanting to be played in a certain way, with certain paths that lead to the endings, while 90% of the other colour amount managment will just lead to a death once you run out of the resources.
Don't get me wrong, the presentation and music and atmosphere and cute ladies definitievly captivated me when I played this game, but I was unable to complete anything without a guide. The resource managment kind of ends up getting in the way of the atmosphere, especially if you're alt tabing to a guide. Just like pathologic the game expects you to savescum or play from the beginning when you reach an unwinable state and that's just not really fun anymore.
So yes, I recommend this game, just be aware of these points, they might rub you the wrong way.

Incredible game. Definitly not even remotely enjoyable - the gameplay hates you, as it does in all Ice-Pick Lodge games -, but it provides a completely unique, dark experience you'll never forget. I tried to wrap my head around the mechanics, gave up at some point and resorted to a video walkthrough. I typically don't watch Let's Plays or walkthroughs, and one might think watching 20 hours of resource management might be is a good indicator for heavy autism, but here it worked out for some reason. The game is just so damn compelling!

Edit: There are some unofficial patches the lower the games difficulty, and even some cheats. If you're interested in the actual gameplay but want to finish the game in the one life you have, this might be an option.

Completed one play through and this is it, in a nutshell:

Basically Farming Simulator but instead of farming for crops and getting rewarded with money, you farm for colour and get rewarded with nudity. Then you have to fight bosses that look like creations of Sid from the first Toy Story.

Slow start but great once you get into it.

10/10 - No nude mods needed

When souls die, they vanish in an instant. But sometimes they linger for a moment. That moment in space when a soul lingers before death is where this game takes place.

The Void is a resource management, survival game with light horror and post-apocolyptic themes. You play as a nameless, golden eyed spirit who's initial tasks include learning the importance of the harvesting, growing and rationing of color. Which is expended to do nearly everything-- from fighting, to defending, to mining, to merely existing in the Void itself (the World Map of sorts).

Shortly into your bid to survive however, you're introduced to the other inhabitants of the Void. From there, the story becomes much more complex, and who you should or should not trust, or what you should and should not do, becomes increasingly unclear.

This is the game you want to play if you've already played Pathologic and wanted to taste more of what the developers produced of a similar feel.

Pros:

1) A genuinely fascinating plot, with a genuinely fascinating world to explore. Not many games pull something like this off. The presentation alone is worth the price of the game

2) Just when you think you've seen everything the game can do and has to offer, it pulls the rug out from under you by introducing more mechanics and ways to interact with the world around you

3) An expertly written and voice acted script

4) Things are rarely as they seem

Cons:

1) More mechanics being introduced later in the game will often leave you feeling as if you've messed up and need to start over hours into playing. The beginning to the game is not excruciating, but not exactly brief. Making the act of starting over tedious and time consuming.

2) It can be easy to become overwhelmed

3) The most dangerous person in the early game is not the monsters or Brothers; But you and your potentially poor lack of resource management. It can be easy to irredeemably ruin your progress by negligibly managing your color with no way to rectify it in time

4) Things are rarely as they seem

** My personal feelings;

I adore this game, it may not be for everyone. But even still, it's cheap, and so intoxicatingly fascinating to just explore and engage with that for this alone, I recommend it.

Most of you won't see it to it's conclusion. Even I haven't yet.

And maybe knowing that is also part of the allure.

It's a rather unique type of game, having a few elements of strategy, management, and survival games, while putting a heavy focus on the story, and the mystery of the world you play in. I have to say that it is a pretty difficult game, as you have to keep track of more things as the game progresses. The game heavily punishes mismanagement of time, and/or resources, and you might find that most of your latest save files are destined to lead into a game over.

Sadly, I haven't completed the game yet but so far I find the story to be very interesting, with many characters which feel like actual characters, with distinct personalities, and personal goals. Often, different characters contradict each other, or straight up lie in order to persuade you, which only makes the whole experience more interesting. I've heard that the Polish and Russian versions have some extra and more obscure dialogue, so if you can understand those languages, you should give them a go.

To be fair, the gameplay could really use a layer of polish. There are a few unofficial patches out there which deal with head bobbing, FOV, and overall difficulty, but that's about it. The game is definitely not for everyone, but if you think you might enjoy surrealistic sceneries, a dark and most likely metaphorical story, or a unique type of gameplay, I suggest giving The Void a go. Also, if you think 10€ might be a bit too much for something you might not even like, you can find it on sale from time to time (I got it for 3€).

This game is a Freudian nightmare, and by that I don't mean a nightmare that lends itself to Freudian analysis. Sigmund Freud genuinely believed that it is every human's true nature to want to destroy one's father and to take dominion of their own mother. He thought it is only our moral intellect that prevents the world into falling into this kind of chaos.

In The Void you get to quite literally live through this kind of chaos. You are brought into the world by a beautiful naked maternal figure and soon after you have to battle and defeat a set of patriarchial monsters who would otherwise be in charge of her.

There is plenty of deep existential truth in this game if you wish to find it. And if you enjoy looking at CGI tiddies and fighting monsters then you might even enjoy the process.

Personally, I found the experience gratuitous and I could not get into it, but I don't regret giving the game a try.

Delayed review, I guess.

This is a very unique and hard game. Its certainly original, and mostly well done.

The only issue people had that I know is the difficulty was unrealistically hard. There is a mod or two that fixes this, which I would say is required to be able to do anything.

Otherwise, I'm glad I played this. It stays with you.

I have so many pages of save files to get through this unforgiving game, I could fill War and Peace with them.

But it is an experience.

Gameplay is a brutal mix of resource + time management. Hence the save files - you don't want to waste too many resources. I like the mechanics, but they are cumbersome to manage. Lots of unnecessary clicking. The game will fight you every step of the way while you play it. One could argue it's not even fun, but fun isn't really the point of The Void (or this developer's other games).

Walk/run speed in the game is abysmal. Luckily, it can be changed with notepad++ (look up a guide). In fact, look up a no spoilers guide before playing this. The game only explains half of what it needs to, and some of it is later than it should be. As I said, the game is unforgiving so knowing how the systems work will go a long way.

Story/characters/atmosphere are where this really shines. It's an immersive, nightmare/dreamlike experience. Beautiful Sisters and horrific Brothers constantly offer their side of the story, showcasing clear symbolism. That's only the tip of the iceberg. There's a lot of themes throughout this, but what I really enjoy is it's clear everyone has their own motives. Peak gray morality! There's nudity, but it's non-sexual and partially obscured. If you're looking at this for a sexual reason, you'll be disappointed. It's less vulgar and more akin to renaissance art.

Ultimately though, this compelling story must be weighed against the frustration required to experience it. Harvesting resources requires unnecessary walking+holding down buttons. Boss fights are a slog. Rearranging resources on your body to maximize their effectiveness is again lots of unnecessary clicking. The timer always running instead of pausing when not moving means you'll reload a lot. There's just so many little things like this that I'd wager literally half of this game supposed 25 hour playtime (according to HLTB) is taken up by menial and/or frustrating tasks. Not to mention how much is unexplained without a walkthrough.

It's hard to recommend subjecting oneself to this, especially in an age where Let's Plays can handle the pain while you reap the rewards. But like I said, it is an experience, and maybe that's what you're looking for in spite of its flaws.

You play as the chosen simp, a legendary figure born with the unique (yes, unique) power of working for hours on end while endangering his own livelihood to generate multiple types of glowing currency and give them selflessly to the various e-thots you find scattered across the land, all while avoiding their rampaging testosterone fueled angry ex-boyfriends that the girls claim are abusive and don't feed them anymore.

These women, in proper e-girl format feel shackled by their own lives and respond to every donation personally and directly towards you in sultry and fetishized voices, the responses getting increasingly more affectionate as you donate larger and larger sums, eventually with them doing pointless little dances or acts while undressing for you personally.

As you meet the men who dumped these women, you learn that they are actually based, discouraging you away from spending your hard earned currencies on these manipulative creatures who are destroying themselves, and instead directing you towards hearty testosterone filled activities like slaying monsters and practical jokes with the boys.

This is a truly unique and one of a kind experience.

It is however super difficult in ways that are not necessarily fully under the players control. This in general, requires you to start your entire playthrough over from scratch (which I have personally had to do numerous times thus far.)

While that can be a barrier for entry, this really is such a unique experience that its worth exploring.

It's best to go into this game blind, so you don't find others' spoilers. You probably won't be able to play through properly your first time but learning about it all yourself is part of the experience. It might be a good idea to make extra saves so you can go back a bit further if you want after you've figured things out. It's a very surreal game and survival is a big part of the gameplay. You will have to be strategic with how you survive and plan ahead. There also is an original Russian version of the game you can play with subtitles. It's different than this one and I think it also tells you more. I plan to play it later. Also if this game is too difficult, there are some difficulty patches you can find on the forum, but you should try to avoid spoilers.

I'll also provide some tips for beginners learning how to play:
Always pay attention to how fast the time is going by. You can control the rate too and it mentions it early on.

Pay attention to how much color you're converting to nerva. Run out of lympha and you die.

For that donor glyph you learn early on make sure you continue the stroke through far enough, but I don't think color is actually wasted if you fail it.

Make sure you draw color on something first you intend to donate color to, or you could accidentally drop color.

Make sure to keep saving enough color.
This game is great, but it is not worth the effort or time you spend on it. It's visuals are out of this world and like nothing I have ever seen before. Voice acting is top-notch. The mechanics of the game are like no other. It is a masterclass on how to make something different that captures a person's imagination.

Where the game falls flat on it's face is how it puts everything together. The amazing visuals mean nothing when you are just doing the same repetitive tasks over and over in the amazing places you explore. The voice acting and story telling of the characters mean nothing when their personality (literally and figuratively) is two-dimensional. And finally the amazing and creative game play this game has to offer becomes outright annoying with how little the game explains you have to play and how unfair it is. Worst of all, unlike in Pathologic 1 that also suffers from similar mistakes in The Void if you fail in a task you become stuck until you find a way to get the challenges. You can't just enjoy the world because the unplayable mechanics are in the way.
If this game were to be remastered with better balance and easier/faster ways to travel and some bug fixes it would be the true art game of this generation but right now it is not much more than porn for intellectuals (look up the sister animations on YouTube).

I don't think the game would be nearly as bad if your character didn't move so slowly, but repetitively going through the same areas again and again at this speed genuinely makes playing The Void feel like you are wasting your life. If your goal in gaming is to have fun, this is not the place to be.

The game is not FUN. It's constant STRESS and by that is by design. It's full of bugs and horrible controls that drive you MAD. Even the game's own tutorial describes things wrong. Enjoy reloading a lot? hope you do because there will be plenty.

After all that there are moments this game will give you shivers. It's like finding diamonds in a pile of poop. If you're into that i dare you to try to finish this masterpiece of a game. There is nothing like it.

Well, duh...
This one is extremely artsy, extremely pretentious, and not that easy to play, actually.
Oh, and there are a lot of waifus for you to choose. And nudity! And good amount of body horror. And poetry.
What not to love?! I mean - how often do you play as a grey-skinned bald guy with eyes of gold who can kill an eldrich abomination by throwing green paint all over the place?
So... yeah. Buy it.

This game was apparently designed by chipmunks on acid and it's one of the most bizarrely enthralling games I've ever played. Nothing makes sense, you are constantly fed a stream of contradicting information, and gameplay can best be described as the player slowly removing supporting structures from a house made of gingerbread until the entire world collapses and you have to start over again.
It's slightly confusing in the same way that concrete is slightly indegestable, but for some reason I keep on coming back to it. Maybe it's the bizarre and unique gameplay (Who knew Paint-Em-Up could be a feasible idea?) Maybe it's the creepy yet creative world (Somewhat akin to Nightmere Before Christmas if it was tossed into the ocean and left to decay for a few centuries).
Whatever the case, this game truly must be seen to be believed and is an absolute steal at the asking price, try it, and don't be to shy about looking up a beginners guide, this game plays fast and loose with the rules.

This game is very hard to recommend for a few reasons: it's way too grindy, you will spend hours gathering resources that are scarce and even then you might be forced to use them to do something the game forces you to; the bosses have way too much health making them really impractical to kill and expensive in resources; it is also confusing and merciless when it comes to mistakes so make a lot of saves. Despite all of that it has a great asthetic of surrealism, a interesting world that makes you try as hard as you can to make sense of it, multiple characters that have their own views and interests in your character, and a combat/drawing system that is unique makes you feel like your drawing spells as a wizard. Unfortunately the time sink necessary is unreasonable because of how much you will repeat the same process of gathering resources over and over, I recommend it in the sense that it can be very entertaining and the developer makes unique and fresh games like this so imo they deserve support.

Absolutely bizzare game, but if you are a fan of movies like The Holy Mountain, The Fountain, etc you will love this. Really dreamlike experience.
A part of this game is drawing glyphs and it feels quite wizardy, and if you are into wizardy things it is great.
Artsy psychedelic visuals, weird story, great sound design are the main strongpoints of this game. Voice acting and narration are great too.
A downside is that It is a bit buggy. Encoutering a bug can kick you out of the immersion. Some creatures would freeze in place, and that is quite annoying.
Overall It is a unique game and I am glad I discovered something like this.

Although I love the concept and theme of the game, every time I try to draw the symbol I fail at it and lose much needed resources when I try my best to draw them. Not fun at all.

The Void still stands as one of my favorite games of all time. It's definitely an arty game, all about evoking emotion, atmosphere, tension. And it doesn't have the usual audience of arty, adventure style games, because it's really difficult. It's a challenge to stay alive, manage your resources, and progress. You can really easily end up with a dead savegame that can't win anymore if you don't plan and think ahead

Most of all, play this game if you love atmosphere and aesthetics, and don't mind them being dark. This hits you pretty deep, and can easily scare you worse than any horror game. It's an art piece you won't want to miss, if you think you have the patience for it
