Über das Spiel

The Mingals are approaching the borders of Dorgan when the royal army appears on the other side of the bridge. Among the soldiers, there’s our hero in shining armor, whose name is Swordbreaker. He has to either win with everyone or suffer a shameful defeat and condemn the whole kingdom to extermination.
But all this will happen a bit later...

As for now, the young adventurer lives a peaceful life and can’t even imagine what is waiting for him ahead... Strange events take place in the territory of the kingdom of Dorgan. People talk about the mysterious strangers in the northern marshes; someone saw mysterious objects falling from the sky; other people heard a strange hum from under the ground. And one can only guess how many unknown creatures are hidden in forest thickets and dark caves... All this attracts the young man to throw himself into the abyss of incredible adventures.

The game will tell about the adventures of Swordbreaker, which happened to him long before the events of the first game. How will his fate be sealed and will he become the adventurer we know? Or will his life take a completely different turn? All this will depend only on the player...

Swordbreaker: Origins

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815821957

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815821953

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2815821946

???? Sound

Swordbreaker: Origins is a beautifully drawn and written adventure novel game that is heavily decision-based. The biggest mechanic of the game is to go through the many scenes and scenarios and make as minimal mistakes as possible in order to progress the adventures of Danny, a young boy who has always sought adventure.

Death is a reoccurring theme in this game, make the wrong decision and Danny dies. Usually the choices available are obvious as to which is the correct course of action, other times you'll have to actually think about it and discover the results of your decision.

I understand that the reward and purpose of this game is to go through as many options as possible through trial and error and figure out what is the correct decision and ultimately reach far into the story. I had fun exploring the many divergences in the story. There is however, an issue of the repetitive dying and restarting from the beginning. I understand the majority of people won't see this as a hindrance and would instead see it as the games biggest feature and selling point, but it is certainly something to be mindful of if you're the type of person who dislikes repeating dialogue and choices.

The amount of variety in the scenes and direction of the story is definitely interesting and unpredictable, it will always have you questioning who everyone is, what your next move should be, if you should be cautious or brave. The emotional influence Swordbreaker: Origins imposes on the player is worthy of great praise and respect. What's worth noting is its +600 scenes and +200 ways to die, it is both admirable and creative yet painful to get through depending on your expectations starting the game and personalities as a person.

I would definitely recommend this to people who are familiar with the Swordbreaker series or have an interest in interactive novels and are open to exploring and decoding the puzzle of staying alive in Swordbreaker: Origins. Just keep in mind that there's death and a lot of it in this game.
As a final note, I will say that Swordbreaker: Origins was a pleasure to play, however, the unfortunate downfall is the fact that it caters to a very small audience and relies heavily on individual patience to retrace the games events.

Yikes, this game is pretty bad, usally i love to have choices but in this game there is one right choice and one wrong choice and choices that gives you stuff. There is allot of them and they make very little sense most of the time, and the dialog is not that good either. Its a very silly game and since you cant save the game you have to restart when you do mess up to many times. I personally hate games that dont let me save before a choice so that is my biggest issue with this. But because of how bad the choices are and how poor the dialog is i quickly lost interest in this game.

I would not recommend this game but if you dont mind restarting allot and enjoy silly games then you will probelly like this.

This is a CYOA visual novel that serves as a prequel to Swordbreaker. Each scene has you pick from options about what to do next, and in dangerous scenes picking incorrectly will result in death and losing a life. You have three lives to lose before being sent back to the beginning (although retracing your steps should be quick by just picking the same choices rapidly). If you're familiar with the original game you'll probably enjoy this too as it's a good bit bigger and offers some more complexity with having more items (or previous choices) influence events. For instance, helping someone may allow you to make a choice to call on their aid, or an item picked up earlier may allow you to resolve an encounter without needing multiple successful choices to survive. Much like the first game, death is pretty common and has some nice illustrations of your demise.

Some criticisms are with the mini-games that are really basic (and failing just results in a generic "Daniel was dead" message). Fortunately these can be skipped after finishing them once. The art style in this seems to vary noticeably with scenes unlike the first game that had a much more consistent style. This is a bit off-putting but is overall well-done. The pop culture references are much more prevalent than in the first game which get a bit annoying at times.

Overall I'd recommend the game if you enjoy visual novels or CYOA style adventures as it's a good example of the genre with a few noticeable flaws.

The prequel does almost everything good that the original game did, only in greater quantities. That seems to me to be a very good compromise. If you are unfamiliar with the game series, this is an interactive parody fantasy adventure filled to the very top with pop culture references, heroic deeds, and the often not-so-heroic deaths of the protagonist. There are routes here that claim to be fantasy seriousness, but on most of the routes you will encounter characters that you would not expect to see in the Middle Ages at all. There are a huge number of routes here, they are also involved in many different conditions for completing certain tasks, I offhand counted 7 large storylines that differ from each other, with completely different endings. And if we are used to the traditional Hero-Coward-Killer, then it will be quite difficult to even find the rest (especially for the Sect line), let alone pass easily. Again, for those who like to get achievements, this is a paradise here; some of them will take hours to figure out the essence.

If we talk about strange things, then these few puzzles are present in the game. Of course, the great thing is that after the first solution they can be skipped, but their very quality lags far behind the rest of the game, and the pace of the story is knocked down. In the game, the hero has a limited number of lives, and the character dies a lot and often, after which you have to start all over again. For me, this was not a problem at all; this is generally the main feature of games of this genre, creating the illusion of some kind of price that you pay for your mistakes. And if this price is not there, then what is the point, this is not a visual novel. I will not say that each of the 217 possible deaths can be easily predicted by the player, but most of them are quite logical and natural. I liked the visual style of the first part more, there it really choked with its gloom, here everything is a little lighter and more positive.

We again set off with the Swordbreaker on a difficult journey, which can end exactly the way the player wants. Having taken the first step, be sure that the road will definitely lead you somewhere, adventures are calling!

I absolutely adore the first Swordbreaker game – in my opinion, it’s among some of the most underappreciated text quests. The sheer number of events and deaths connected with them is truly impressive. And each one has its own illustration!

Another great part is that while having this satisfying old-school feel about it, Swordbreaker is also a good parody – which means, we should be ready for some nice jokes and bizarre situations. Ever wanted to bring your bloodthirsty D&D habits to a computer quest? Well, this one offers you enough options to crash, rob and loot – just do not expect to survive all of them and everything will be fine and dandy.

My, I am rambling about the first game a bit too much, aren’t I? You came here for the review of Swordbreaker: Origins, after all. Well, let me show you what this game offers and we will decide together whether the prequel lives up to the glory of its older brother.

General Thoughts

????️ Swordbreaker: Origins has its own solid story line despite being a parody. It is full of the most bizarre events and meetings, but many of them bring long quests that can earn you some interesting rewards. The kingdom is full of adventures for any kind of playthrough and you never know where the protagonist will end next. However, even the goofiest ones can turn into a serious confrontation, so choose wisely.

Speaking of writing, it feels somewhat dry at times, but not overly simplistic. It gives enough descriptions and features lots of fun action (trust me, even stones and trees want your head here), and English translation is up to par.

????️ Characters. Oh boy, those are aplenty. Swordbreaker (whose real name is Daniel) is the main guy, of course, but he meets SO many people along his journey: from mythical and dangerous creatures to proud warriors and tricky magicians. Some are completely original, while others come from different realms. Most meetings are very brief, while others can… cause some curious consequences.

There are also several women who may or may not fall in love with our dashing hero in woolen pants and reward you with mildly spicy CGs.

????️ Multiple endings that are partially affected by the new reputation system. If you start killing everyone around you, the world WILL know about it. You heroic or cowardly feats are also recorded, of course.

????️ Jokes. Generally good and creative, but some are based on famous Russian movies (such as Kidnapping, Caucasian Style) and fairy tales so might not be obvious for foreign players. There are many references to popular media too; do not be surprised if you meet hobbits, aliens, yeti and other nice fellas that ‘definitely do not want to kill you’.

????️ Artwork - 620 pictures plus extras, CARL!

????️ No saves, but you have 3 lives. As soon as you die three times, though, it is game over. Which means that yes, you have to start your adventure from the very beginning. Considering the number of possible events and deaths, you are in for a long ride, buddy.

????️ Mini-games and puzzles. Some are simple and others will challenge your brain quite a bit. I think it is a nice addition to the usual gameplay. In addition to them, there are achievements. You will need to travel and battle a lot to collect them all.

Extra Notes

First, I encountered one event that had some inconsistences.
If you visit goblins’ city before the human one. Daniel will be on a quest to ask goblins for help even if you have never taken it. And after killing yeti, our protagonist will go straight to the army guy – again, even though you have NEVER seen or talked to him before.
.

Second, I would say that the first Swordbreaker’s art was more consistent. Some pictures in the prequel look a bit like doodles (if we talk about backgrounds in particular), while others are more complex and detailed. My guess here is that they were drawn by at least three or four different artists – that would explain noticeable contrast of styles. Not a bad thing, in my opinion, as it makes the game look more eclectic.

The Conclusion

Swordbreaker: Origins is not one of those epic quests usually seasoned with constant drama and pompous speeches. It is a self-aware story with some spicy scenes and lots, lots of brutal deaths. For a fantasy parody, it offers great replayability with an abundance of possible events and endings. And while the writing is simple at times, it is also very entertaining and makes you want to discover all the secrets hidden behind seemingly innocent choices.

If you have already played the first Swordbreaker, you will really like this one too as it shows you more of Daniel’s life before his grand adventure for epic loot. If you have not, definitely give both games a try. They are worth it if not for all I have mentioned above, then for the sheer amount of beautiful artwork.

P.S. And remember – violence is the best way to deal with drunken hobbits.

This is a prequel to Swordbreaker The Game. Playing Swordbreaker Origins is like reading Fighting Fantasy gamebook with few exceptions:
- You don't need to roll the dice when you make some certain choices or fight. Instead you decide what approach is suitable for you in different situations. Some actions may add a point to your Karma depending on the choices you make and which will affect your final result.
- There are plenty of main hero death scenes in this game. I believe that around 1/4 of all scenes are actually death scenes in this game. And significant part of them are very unpredictable. Sometimes there's a feel that the protagonist can die literally from sneezing. Seriously!

Despite these two factors Swordbreaker Origins can give much enjoyment from playing it. There are plenty of pop culture references, so if you like kinky adventure games like The Book of Unwritten Tales you'll enjoy this one too.

Mini games are not very hard and can even mix the gameplay if you got tired of reading game texts.

I like the game arts pretty much, but I do believe that at least two different artists were involved in creating in-game arts. I'd prefer that the in-game arts would be more art style-wise consistent though.

There are about 8 different endings in Origins, and each playthrough will take about 2-3 hours if you are going to read all the in-game text.

Thank you for awesome adventure game, DuCats Games Studio! Awaiting for part 3 ;)

Like a mini fighting fantasy book, But with lots more death :(

A solid improvement on an already decent original game. This offers over 600 scenes and over 200 of them grizzly ways to meet your maker.

Mini-games can however be a tad repetitive and frustrating(Looking at you rock puzzle) but add a decent interactive element in the game.

Providing you can remember your paths or keep a log you should be able to get all the achievements in 4-5 hours(Or less with a guide)

Thanks for the code Ducats, Just needs an Xbox or Win10 release with achievements.
