Vorweg:
Ich kenne die gesamte Thief Reihe in und auswendig.

Frechheit was hier serviert wird.

Guard no. 1: ...and I'm telling you that the only stench heartier than your rotting burrick of a master, is the liquor on his fetid breath! If he comes near Lady van Vernon again, we'll boil his knickers..

Guard no. 2: (Scoffing) Whoa-ho! Mighty fine words, coming from a knock-kneed, inbred page-boy, such as yourself. Our good Master Willey wouldn't be caught near that frumpy... little trollop... unless he were holding her back at the end of a halberd!!

Guard no. 3: Huh... (Angry, proclaiming loudly) How dare you defile the name of someone so good and virtuous as the Lady van Vernon?!! Our Lady is a saint among mortal women! An angel so pure the heavens couldn't hold her!!

Guard no. 2: ...BOOHHAHHAHHAHHAHHAHH... AAH, your Lady... an 'angel'?? You're lucky the Dockside whorekeeps aren't bashing down her door for stealing their clientele!! Why, just last night, I saw her out back, (lewdly) warming up the stable-boy.

Guard no. 3: (Furious) Such slander will not be tolerated while we're on watch!! You'd best run and rescue your helpless limp lord, before he flounders in his own vomit...or wakes up naked in a hen-coop!! Scurry off!! Or you'll acquire some unnecessary 'ventilation'!

Guard no. 2: (Incensed) Is that a threat, you, shriveled old maid?! You go to prick us with your sewing needles?... On this side a' the street, we shoot like soldiers! So don't make promises your arrows can't keep!!

Guard no. 3: (Hysterical) You've gone... you've gone too far this time, you, camel-mannered, tunic-wearing, molly-coddle!! An arrow to the throat ought to shut you up!

Guard no. 2: (Roaring) Rraaaah! Have at thee!!

I consider Thief The Dark Project / Gold to be the Citizen Kane of video games. So many gameplay and storytelling mechanisms were pioneered by that game, and it is still very good even compared to modern games.

Thief 2 is a massive expansion on those ideas. It is a far better game, maybe not as innovative, but massively refined. I'd consider it one of the best games ever made by any reasonable standard. My only criticism is that by focusing entirely on human missions, this game loses some of the adventure / survivor horror / mood of the original, that was never really recaptured by any game until Amnesia.

The fan mission ecosystem is very robust as well, adding far more content than anyone could reasonably play. Even if you didn't love Thief Gold, you should try this game. It is *the* stealth game.

Amazing stealth game. By far my favorite in the genre. Best atmosphere of any game I've ever played, which helps it so much in immersing you in the role of being a thief. Great game design, art style is old and charming, great voice acting for the main character, compelling and unique story that hooks you in. Miles better than the 2014 Thief title, do not bother with that one.

Only downside is having to configure files and download some fan patches, but if you're computer literate to the point of being able to use a search engine - this shouldn't stop you from experiencing a masterpiece.

This is a stealth game that has ruined all other stealth games for me. I thought the first thief game was good, but there were times where I felt like I was being forced to play less stealth and more action. Thief 2: The Metal Age took those problems and improved upon them to make an amazing stealth experience one that I fear I will be unable to find in any other games. I did have to download a fix to get it to work on my computer, but overall I find that its worth it and now I can download fan missions that will let me continue my fun with these games mechanics. If your a fan of stealth games that allow you to full stealth the entire game I would definitely recommend adding this game to your library!

More of the same from the first entry, but with minor improvements, slightly better maps and a more believable world.

The Metal Age has better maps, many of which you don't get lost in too often, they're slightly better to navigate, but still a bit excessive length wise, still nowhere near as 'Thieves Guild' levels of bad. My main gripes comes from the final part of the game and it's ending, it just felt hollow and unfulfilling, as though the game's late development had to be wrapped up quickly like System Shock 2's conclusion.

Just hit 100 hours, which I find slightly absurd looking back on it. And that's just Thief 2, I have 70-ish in thief gold, and double that with fan missions and T2X and Deadly Shadows. So I thought I should probably write a review.

For the smoothest experience you need to download the unofficial patch and remap the keybindings for nearly everything. The graphics are going to be quite remote for most people, and will definitely be a deal breaker for many, but what's beneath is a surprisingly fresh feeling game, especially for 2000.

I never played Thief when it came out. I was too young but I've had a growing fondness for these games that will be too archaic for most to enjoy. Yet, even by today's standards, Garret's movement feels nimble and light, his lean and mantle feel better than most modern counterparts, and his rope and water arrows are legendary, but the audio work and lighting steal the spotlight for me. It is incredible what they were able to accomplish here. Just incredibly immersive.

I wanted to start a new playthrough, but after a few missions I'll admit it was starting to get a little stale, (this is fair considering it's a roughly 15 hour singleplayer experience). Then I decided to self-impose a rule, no quick-saving (or one mid-level save for the really big levels a la Life of the Party).

Thief is already intense (and the first is quite good as a horror game), but once I stopped falling back on constant saving, the game opened up again like it did the first time I played it. It was stressful and insanely intense. Deciding whether to run or fight when I was discovered was immensely enjoyable and I'd encourage any seasoned players to try this. Messing around with the sword and combat instead of the blackjack for the first time ever can be clunky but quite fun when you get the hang of it.

After more than 20 years, there's nothing that hits quite like Thief and Thief 2. The world and lore is gripping, the sneaking and sleuthing is top notch. But all that being said, I still regularly skip The Thieves Guild. I'm also quite scared to try the Haunted Cathedral without saving (Haunts are terrifying).

Note: I cannot recommend this game because it currently requires an unofficial patch to work with Windows 10, if you are interested in that search for T2Fix. With the patch I would recommend this game.

The sequel to Thief (1998) doesn't disappoint in level design and opportunity, there were many a time I had used tools to access areas only to later find there was a door all along.

The choice of enemies and objectives don't conflict this time, where Thief 1 tells you not to kill anyone followed by a mission of killing all of a specific enemy, Thief 2 trades humans for machines that can be shut down.

Played this game since before it was out. Still play it. It does not hold your hand, makes you read the maps yourself, and you do not play an overpowered guy with massive hack and slash abilities, and emphasis is on story and action instead of overblown graphics. No, you sneak, have to be quick, quiet, smart, clever and often are told you're a thief not a murderer. Also, the ability to track enemies through sound alone is awesome. There is a reason this is one of the stealth genre's classics. Play it.

Thief 2 is possibly the best stealth game ever made. This game is all about setting you loose in an expansive level and telling you to steal something, giving you total freedom over how you approach your objectives and navigate the level. It is one of the earliest (and best) examples of an immersive sim, and it remains an excellent game to this day.

You are very weak in combat and health is rare, so stealth is the primary focus of this game. This is particularly unique, mobile, and engaging stealth, as the amount of noise you produce and lighting are often greater concerns than line of sight. You also have a range of gadgets to help you make your way through levels, such as flash bombs, gas mines, water arrows, rope/vine arrows, and more. Rope/vine arrows are a personal favorite, as they add a ton of vertical freedom to levels. Almost every gadget has numerous potential uses, with these uses often not being immediately obvious.

Level design is really, really good! Mostly. There are a ton of excellent missions in this game, and they are quite varied and memorable. I loved the first cathedral level, the bank heist, and the rooftop level. All of these were specifically designed for stealth, so they feel satisfying to play. When the levels are great, they're some of the best of the genre, but when they're bad, they're unpleasant and lazy. Three levels in this game are effectively just slightly altered copy and pastes of other levels. The penultimate level is copy and pasted from the level just before it! And one of these copy and pasted missions is an extremely prolonged and glitchy tailing mission (imo, the worst mission in the whole franchise, thief 4 included)!

Sound design is some of the best in game history, still besting the sound design of many modern games. Just from the sound of a guard's footsteps, you can tell where he is, if he's in another room, what material he is walking on, etc. This also integrates in with the stealth - the material you walk on greatly affects how much noise you produce. Silent materials can negate the sounds of running, whereas loud materials can give away your location even if you are sneaking incredibly slowly. Some of your gadgets can create or negate sound, further emphasizing use of sound. This series really helped me appreciate good sound design in video games.

This game doesn't run very well on modern operating systems by default. I used T2Fix to get it running on my system properly at a 16:9 aspect ratio. It gives you a lot of options, but I suggest configuring the game for a vanilla, unmodified experience.

I would highly recommend this game. It's only a dollar on sale, marking it an incredible bargain. The game has very high highs, but it has some unfortunately low lows. Still, the core gameplay is excellent, the level design is often great, and it has aged exceptionally well. It would go on to highly influence many future games, such as Dishonored and Prey 2017.

Among the best stealth games of all time, Thief 2 expands upon the gameplay in the original with better level designs which require less backtracking and are more focused towards stealth. I'd cal DOOM 2 an extra level pack for DOOM, and Below Zero an extra level pack for Subnautica, but Thief 2, despite being on the same engine and maintaining the same basic tools, I would consider to be its own game. Thief 1 often played out as a survival horror game in many levels (scariest game I've played imo, more so than Alien Isolation), funnelling the player towards frightful aberrations in a way that suggests fighting them head on is the only way. Thief 2 can still be spooky, but it has nothing on Thief 1 in that regard; its levels are designed to accommodate various different stealthy approaches, and the story was designed to support the levels and not the other way around(like in Thief 1). Thief 2's story isn't bad, but it wasn't as interesting as Thief 1's story to me- but the cutscenes are still as stylish as ever and the voice acting is on point; guard banter is better than ever.
The audio is just as strong in Thief 2, allowing you to pinpoint enemy movements, guess their facing, and judge the size of the room they're in by the echoing. It's a shame other stealth games don't implement a similar directional audio system, they either make the player have to memorise sentry locations or rely on a wallhacks vision mode or topdown radar display, which are nowhere near as immersive or skillful to use. My only complaint about Thief 2's gameplay is that you need to be patient to wait for guards to walk more than in other stealth games where you can easily incapacitate enemies from a distance, or make a distraction that won't potentially cause a guard to sound the alarm.
Overall Thief 2 is a strong contender for the best stealth game ever made with its superb gameplay, setting and atmosphere. Because it's an old game, it's stupidly cheap but also requires one patch to be fully functional(t2fix), and I like to restore EAX audio with another patch(allows the echoing of 3D sound on modern sound hardware)

sorta spoilers much lower:

Throughout Thief 1 and 2, there are often pairs of bantering guards which pop up in the various manors. In the penultimate level of Thief 2, it turns out that these pairs where the same in each manor- after Garrett breaks in, they get fired and move onto another job, just to get fired again. Top tier worldbuilding.

(My playtime is higher than 2 hours, but I'm using the high-def texture pack that doesn't use the steam launcher)

Solid sequel to an excellent stealth game that expands on the lore of the first game. It makes stealth feel like an actual act of hiding from people, instead of simply choosing not to fight, ala Dishonored.

It's the Oblivion/Skyrim sneak system, but without the RPG elements. Sure, the graphics are primitive and a bit crude, but after a couple levels, you'll get over that. Each level will take you nearly an hour to get through, and there are 15 of them...

Great voice acting, and also great cutscene work... even by today's standards, these cutscenes were done very well. The style of them completely circumvents the primitive look of the time, and I have to appreciate the cleverness of this approach. Worth keeping in mind for game devs today, in fact.

This is my favorite game in the Thief series.

The levels are varied and imaginative with little looping, and many alternative pathways and places to explore. You also have many different kinds of foes between the levels but a consistent overall theme in the game. It should be noted that there is less of an emphasis on supernatural enemies than in the first game in the series. Personally, I liked this.

I love the plot so far (yet to finish the game). It's genuinely riveting and has at times been spooky, heartfelt and sad, and even utterly shocking. There is a lot of intricacy in the game; things that connect if you're willing to be mindful.

I played it with the T2Fix mod which improved the graphics. With a solid graphics mod this game overtakes most new games on the market.

Oh, and as usual for a Thief game, awesome voice performances.

If you are a fan of Thief Gold/The Dark Project, then I can absolutely recommend this sequel as well. Nearly every issue from the first game is improved upon. Most notably, the level design is more concise, gameplay variety is increased, and backtracking is significantly limited (but still exists in levels such as “Kidnap” and “Sabotage at Soulforge”). Just like the first game, there will be moments when a walkthrough is recommended to put you on the right track. There are times when an obscure item/switch/lever/scroll/book/key in an obscure location is required to progress, and you can spend hours looking and never find it. This is especially prevalent in the game’s final level, which features a tedious section revolving around finding and combining various items using machines. Much like with Thief Gold, a community-made patch called T2Fix is basically required to run this game properly. Without it, the gamma slider to adjust brightness, among other things, simply will not work.
As the title suggests, there is a lot of metal in this game. Electricity/artificial lighting is abundant, many levels have industrial settings, and various robots roam the stages freely. All of this improves the steampunk aesthetic that Thief Gold introduces (which helps the world building), but it also lessens the unique horror aspects that Gold had going for it. Thief 2 has a larger variety of locations and objectives, but comparatively lacks the shifting moods that Thief Gold employed so well IMO.
Thief Gold received a lot of flak for its more supernatural elements; therefore, those elements are greatly toned down here, and instead replaced by robots. Much of this is a result of this game's story, which is mainly focused on the corrupt nature of industrial leaders/society, and the moral implications that come with it. This game feels marginally more lore-heavy to me, and I think the introduction of The Mechanists and their vague connection to The Hammers is one of the main contributors to that.
If I could target the weakest aspect of Thief 2, it would be the story. Thief Gold’s story initially seems directionless up until the point where Garret starts working for Constantine. From there, the story begins to follow a natural progression (more or less). However, your end goal in this game is much more ambiguous, changes frequently, and at points seems to contradict Garret’s previously held motivations. Couple that with some lazier story arcs including working with old foes and revisiting locations from the previous game, it becomes clear that the story was developed around the level design, not vice-versa. There are redeemable aspects of the plot, such as the player slowly unfolding the true nature of the villain’s plan and the other characters’ varying involvement in it. There are also interesting themes regarding nature vs industry, slavery vs servitude, and the way in which religion can act as a façade for corrupt behaviors. However, on an actual mission-by-mission basis, there seems to be a tinge of randomness regarding the locations and objectives. Especially considering that Thief Gold’s story is not anything mind blowing itself, Thief 2’s feels comparably disjointed.
Ultimately though, I would recommend this game. If you have little patience for older games’ quirks, or just prefer more linear level design, this whole franchise might not be for you. On the other hand, if you enjoy open-ended games that reward thorough exploration and attention to detail, this game might just be a masterpiece.

Amazing sequel of a revolutionary game. Gameplay and visuals were tweaked, but it feels largely the same, most significantly changed are level design and mission structure. In my opinion this game is better than the first one in every category. You can easily run this game on a modern system just install an unofficial T2Fix patch. If you liked the first game, but wish gameplay was more focused on actual thievery, you gonna love this one.

Pros:
- Levels are very intricate;
- Atmosphere is amazing;
- Awesome sound design;
- Cool aesthetics;
- Interesting story and antagonist;

Cons:
- Some missions very tedious;

Atmosphere is amazing and the sound design is also brilliant, although NPC interactions are a bit janky and awkward, but I just leave that up to this being a 20 year old game. Mission design is phenomenal and I even grew to enjoy the actual gameplay. Although I think the AI is a bit inconsistent, sometimes they see me in the shadows and sometimes they don't. But altogether this is an amazing immersive sim well worth your money

One of the most comfortable gaming experiences I've ever had - walking around these large levels for hours on end is very relaxing, and it's the best Stealth game I've ever played, to boot!

My only complaint is that the game becomes somewhat stale after about the halfway point. With sixty hours of game to offer, it could have been shorter and a bit more interesting.

The gold standard of stealth gaming, the one that put the genre on the map - This may be an old game, but it still holds its own and is well worth checking out.

Pros-

1) The stealth system can put a fair few modern games to shame. Intricate mechanics such as varying noise levels of footsteps based on the material the flooring you are treading on is made of is just something you don't see anymore.

2) The game allows for a myriad of potential paths to reach your final objective. Think like a thief, explore the area and have fun with it - as long as the idea is not far fetched and not outside of the skill set you have, it's probably possible to do here.

3) Fantastic replayability value since you can go back and try out alternate routes to reach your objective or bump up the difficulty level.

Cons-

1) There are issues with the gamma levels on modern systems. This game was made to run on Windows XP at best. You'll need a third party patch to fix that.

2) Being really old, the game obviously looks dated visually and the animations are clunky by modern standards. This isn't a proper con, but i felt it was worth mentioning.

3) The save mechanic can be finicky. Once again, this is a compatibility issue and you will most likely have to check for a fix on the steam forums or online if you run into this issue.

Thief 2 is a half-decent follow up to the original, bunch of new levels, a couple of new items and a few new enemies and obstacles. Its not a terrible game but as a sequel its pretty weak, the game itself looks identical and there's really not any significant changes. The missions themselves are a lot more grounded than the first game, a whole lot less monsters and more just humans and robots so its pretty weak in my opinion. Its also more frustrating. Overall if you liked the mechanics of the first game you'd probably like this one but if you're playing for any other reason aside from that or story then its not that great. 6.5/10

Thief 2 is my favorite stealth game of all time. It expands on the core mechanics of Thief 1 in very sharp ways, focuses on levels that are far less labyrinthine and fantastical and therefore more intuitively navigable (yet no less complex), and despite a narrative design that was built around the levels rather than the other way around still tells an appealing story with some seriously creepy elements.

It's hard to put my finger on exactly what it is that makes the first two Thief games such a pleasure to play. They just sing to me. Movement speeds, the leaning, the dark/light mechanics, the way guards behave when they spot you (or don't). The way climbing works, the firmness of the interactions. The absolutely sublime bow mechanics (my favorite bow of any game, I can hit any dang thing at any distance on pure intuition and it feels so darn good). The sound design is borderline iconic. Even the look, which was outdated even when it was released, has somehow aged well. My wife commented the game looks like papercraft, like a popup book, and she is right! The incongruity of the motion captured movements with the ultra low poly characters really cement that sense of flat solidity that just makes the world perceive just right.

Thief 1 holds a special place in my heart. In Thief 2, there's no Bafford's Manor: No The Sword. No villain on the level of Constantine. But there is the absolutely phenomenal roaming villainy of Life of the Party, the openendedness of Shipping and Receiving. The haunting sounds of the horn of quintus that made the Bonehoard so good in Thief 1 was always sullied by the presence of burricks and zombies. There's hardly any such fantastical nonsense in Thief 2. Nearly everything you encounter makes sense within a world that makes sense, and so the game makes more sense for it.

Thief 2 has never played better than now. Play with fan patches and newdark at perfectly stable high framerate high res, emulated EAX through openal, and gamepad controls through one of the many excellent steam controller configurations. What a treasure.

Absolutely fantastic stealth game. Garrett's cutscenes and voice lines when discovering things in the world are amusing and very good at characterizing this professional thief recently come out of retirement to take up the old antics. You can play the game moderately aggressive, but the best way to experience it is fully stealthy, only fighting when absolutely cornered. Unfortunately it does require an unofficial patch called T2Fix to run on modern operating systems but it is so very worth it. The game definitely shows its age at times, with a lot of general old game jank. A stealth experience this full and absolutely exhilarating is a steal at just 7 USD and this will be an amazing addition to any gamer's library.

Ah, Thief 2. One of the best stealth games ever made. No, scratch that. The best stealth game ever made, although some people may argue that Thief Gold is better. It doesn't really matter since Thief 2 uses the same engine as Thief Gold and they're both excellent games.

Thief has one of the most in-depth stealth systems ever designed. Different surfaces cause different footstep sounds: carpet is silent while marble is very loud, meaning you have to walk more slowly across marble to not alert the guards, while you can safely run across carpet without triggering alerts. The sound system is the best ever made, even modern stealth games can't hold a candle to it. Visibility depends on light level, you are almost invisible in shadowy areas but guards can easily detect you in well-lit areas. And the game's minimal interface always provides good feedback on how visible you are via the light gem.

Level design is great, too, but overall a bit weaker than its predecessor. The best levels are the bank and Life of the Party, big sprawling levels that allow you to tackle objectives in any way you want. Good stuff.

But the real kicker is FAN MISSIONS. The vanilla game itself has 15 missions, each of which will take you anywhere between half an hour and two hours to play through. But once you're done with those, the wonderful world of community-made fan missions awaits you. You may wonder how I racked up so many hours on this game. It's because of fan missions and Dromed, the game's level editor, with which I work on my own fan missions.

I only bought this game here in late 2019 or early 2020, but I've been playing fan missions since 2010, so my actual playtime is much, much higher than what's tracked by Steam. There are over a thousand fan missions out there for you to play. A lot of them suck, of course. But just as many of them are decent. And a couple of them even surpass the original missions. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the Thief fan mission scene has created some of the best level design ever. Some fan mission designers went on to work as level designers in the game industry, such as hipbreaker who was hired by Arkane to work on Dishonored 2, or skacky who was hired by 3D Realms to work on Wrath.

Here are some great fan missions I'd consider absolute must-plays: Ominous Bequest, Broken Triad, Rowena's Curse, The Seven Sisters, Bad Debts, Disorientation, Breaking the Stone, The Sound of a Burrick in a Room, Endless Rain, Ascend the Dim Valley, The Widow's Ire, Heist Society, Tales from the Cleft: Vandal, Shoes & Dresses*. And that's just a narrow selection of some of the best. There's plenty more where that came from. You can easily spend thousands of hours playing fan missions. I've been playing them for over ten years and still haven't played all of them!

*okay Shoes & Dresses is merely a mediocre mission and not a must-play, but I made it so I gotta shill it

After years of Splinter Cell, Hitman, Deus Ex and Dishonored games, Thief 2, and 1, still are the best stealth games out there.

Guard 1: And I'm telling you that the only stench heartier than your rotting burrick of a master, is the liquor on his fetid breath. If he comes near Lady Van Vernon again, we'll boil his knickers.
Guard 2: Oh ho! Mighty fine words coming from a knock-kneed, inbred pageboy such as yourself. Our good master Willy wouldn't be caught near that frumpy little trollop unless he were holding her back at the end of a halberd.
Guard 1: (gasp) How dare you defile the name of someone so good and virtuous as the Lady Van Vernon. Our Lady is a saint among mortal women. An angel so pure the heavens couldn't hold her.
Guard 2: (laughs loudly) Your Lady? An angel? You're lucky the Darkside Whorekeeps aren't bashing down her door for stealing their clientele. Why just last night, I saw her out back warming up the stable-boy.
Guard 1: Such slander will not be tolerated while we're on watch! You'd best run and rescue your helpless limp lord before he flounders in his own vomit, or wakes up naked in a hen coupe. Scurry off, or you'll acquire some unnecessary ventilation!
Guard 2: Is that a threat, you shriveled old maid? You gonna prick us with your sewing needles? On this side of the street we shoot like soldiers, so don't make promises your arrows can't keep.
Guard 1: (voice cracks) You've gone... you've gone too far this time, you camel-mannered, tunic-wearing mollycoddle!! An arrow in the throat ought to shut you up!!
Guard 2: Raahh! Have at thee!

Play whack-a-mole with the city guard

Pros:
+ great stealth gameplay
+ gorgeous art style
+ lots of nifty tools to experiment with
+ amazing unique atmosphere (combination of steampunk + horror)
+ decent storyline

Cons:
- might look dated
- can feel quite easy (thus immersion-breaking) once you get the hang of some basic tricks

Recommended to ANYONE interested in quality game design, IF you are willing to move past its dated graphics and engine.

Thief 2 The Metal Age is the best in the Thief series, it has everything that made The Dark Project interesting while also sporting tighter and more consistent level design, most of the levels in this game are great and memorable, the sound design is as immersive as ever and the mechanics are a bit more refined. The main antagonist of the story is also more detailed and fleshed out and is one of the most memorable villains in any game I've played. A masterpiece of stealth gaming that deserves your time if you're a stealth fan.

Download fan patches before playing as the devs have been defunct for a long time but the community have went above and beyond and are doing a solid job of keeping this game alive for this long.

I don't have many hours on Steam but I have played through this game outside of it.

Thief 2 is an absolutely incredible and immersive game with an amazing atmosphere, solid stealth gameplay, large levels with lots of different options and tools to reach your goals, great voice acting and writing, and an eerie soundtrack that suits the mood of the game perfectly.

Thief 2 doesn't have much of the supernatural/horror levels or themes as the first game, focusing instead on a more Steampunk environment to show the rise of machinery in the game, but it still has a lot of tension when you're sneaking through levels with eerie ambient noise in the background while you carefully slip past guards and machines, treading ever so softly so you don't alert anyone or anything to your presence. The machines in particular can make moments tense when you're sneaking around and feeling safe until you hear the thudding of one of them coming closer to you as it preaches about Karras.

The game plays nearly identical to the first game with some tweaks and improvements so if you enjoyed the gameplay of the first game you'll most likely have no issue with it in the second game and feel right at home. You'll be sneaking through the shadows and keeping an eye on your light gem to determine how hidden you are as well as listening to how loud your footsteps are to try and reach your goal with as little trouble as you can. After all, you're a thief, and while you can put up a fight if you get detected (provided the mission doesn't have an objective that states you can not do so) or just run and hide to escape danger, you want to try and avoid those situations, so the shadows and darkness are your best friends.

Some of the levels in Thief 2 can be large and expansive so you can spend a lot of time exploring and looking for more loot and secrets. Playing on harder difficulties in the game will require you to spend a lot more time exploring the levels and looking for more loot than it normally would on an easier difficulty as higher difficulties add more objectives to missions to make it more challenging.

The only thing that I would say hasn't aged amazingly is that sometimes movement can feel a bit clunky, climbing objects in particular could sometimes be a bit wonky and I could find myself just falling off entirely or not really climbing up and just sort of hanging onto the side of whatever it was I was climbing, but it didn't happen often enough for it to be a big issue. The combat can feel a bit stiff too, though hopefully you can stay out of fights for most of the game since it's likely you won't last very long going in and swinging your sword everywhere, but if there's a moment where you do get into a fight it can take a bit of getting used to the feel of the sword.

Overall, if you want an immersive and atmospheric stealth game that requires you to think about how you should approach a situation, as well as entertaining dialogue that is present both in the briefings for levels and from the conversations you can overhear from guards, then I highly recommend Thief 2.

10/10 - Expands and enhances on the original in almost all aspects. One of the finest games ever put out even two decades later.

+ Expansive levels and exquisite design
+ Sound engine pumps with all cylinders embracing you into the game world perfectly
+ T2fix & HD mod allowed me to enjoy the graphics/engine/mechanics - surprising eye candy
+ Difficulty curve continues to increase through each and every level offering new challenges continuously
+ Atmosphere and tension are sublime
+ World building continues from the original game with less supernatural elements
+ Cannot emphasize the size of levels and patience/tactics necessary to overcome them

- I got a bit burned out playing Thief 1 & 2 back to back - do pace your experience
- Levels can be TOO gigantic to the point of being a chore (1-2 hours excluding retries on first go)
- Clipping texture bugs/AI shortcoming/lighting system imperfections/jumping on ledges SUCKS
- Confusing/opaque/middling objectives producing unnecessary hurdles (run back to start of level objectives X_X)

This game is still an experience unlike any other. For fans of Immersive Sims a masterclass of design and beauty from sound driven stealth

Lets be clear, I didn't enjoyed Thief: The Dark Project that much... It had confusing level design, quite a lot of missions that were not so much about thieving and had a big focus on monster hunting but I did enjoyed this game a thousand times more. Thief 2 has better level design, more gadgets, more enemies which come in the form of robots and security cameras and also new voicelines cinematics and a complete story and interesting villain.

Thief 2 is very similar to Thief 1 but it enhances almost all the aspects of its predecesor and creates something that is unique, feels original enough and I personally believe makes enough changes to justify being a sequel. Thief 2 biggest changes are the new Mechanical Beasts and Security Cameras also the gadgets and potions garret can now use during missions that are really useful and fun to use.

The new gadgets include a small Mechanical Sphere that you can throw to recon areas and the Slow fall potion which prevents you from dying if you jump from a high place. Other interesting changes done to the game is the way levels are now more easy to navigate and less empty since every single room has something of interest and there are no more stupid cave levels full of zombies. The most important change in my opinion is the amount of interesting and original ideas packed into every single level, which are now more intuitive, interesting and at the same time quite possibly harder.

Would I recommend Thief 2? Yes but only if you played Thief 1, this might seem like a contradiction since imo Thief 2 is the better game in every way but to appreciate this changes one must not forget to play Thief 1 and trust me... you will love this game if you suffered with the first.

Spoilers for THIEF

“My good thief...”

The first Thief underwent several variations before finally coming together late in development. It’s part of the reason there’s such a range of mission types, because it wasn’t explicitly understood by its creators as a stealth game until the very end. The missions that don’t involve Garrett sneaking into plush mansions and arcane compounds see him delving into mines, crypts, and hidden cities. In these settings Garrett will invariably confront a medley of fantastical monsters like ghouls, zombies, and giant spiders, which reduce the emphasis on stealth somewhat. These missions vary things up a bit, but they can also be tricky, as Thief's combat is not as interesting as time spent in the shadows.

In 1998, many players didn’t react positively to such missions. They enjoyed sneaking into urban environments and fleecing villainous aristocrats more than navigating burrick hollows (what’s a burrick? Glad you asked. It is a belching dinosaur).

Looking Glass Studio’s heard them loud and clear – enter Thief II - The Metal Age. It is very nearly a perfect game. If you liked / loved / worshipped at the altar of Thief, you’re going to find so much bliss here. It’s once again built using the Dark Engine, so it looks, feels, and mostly plays like the original over the course of its fifteen missions. But it’s also quite different in lots of way, and that comes from the developer’s confidence in their concept, and an understanding of exactly what they needed to do to take it to the next level. Some missions are monolithic, and each one tells its own story, further fleshing out what’s already a compellingly broody gaslamp fantasy. Your arsenal of arrows, flash bombs, and lockpicks is intact here, with a few new surprises.

But Thief II is also something of an over correction, and your feelings on it will depend on what you think of the first game (or perhaps you just won't give a damn, and that's fair). Instead of trying to crack the levels that didn’t work for players the first time round, they just effaced them completely. You won’t find a Bonehoard or Haunted Cathedral here (which is funny, given the latter is lauded as one of the most inventively scary levels in all gaming). There’ll be banks, police stations, and manor houses, and your enemy – be they human or machine – will be best countered by avoiding them altogether. It’s an interesting swing in the opposite direction, and even a touch ironic.

The world of Thief II is markedly different from the one you remember. In the wake of the Trickster’s defeat (a sort of mad Pagan god who tried to cripple industrial society), a new power has risen in The City, and both the gentry and the law have fallen under its sway.

They are the Mechanists, and they have brought with them hulking robots and security cameras, just to make life that much harder for a thief. These fanatics swear by the machine, holding organic life and its imperfections in contempt. Their leader is man called Karras – a demented inventor with a pronounced lisp who nonetheless loves the sound of his own voice. He’ll taunt, jeer, and lecture you at certain points, and listening to him is, honestly, pure joy. The man’s one of gaming’s strangest villains, and Half-Life 2's Breen owes him a debt. As is Garrett’s way, he’ll soon be drawn into the Mechanists' schemes, and will once again be called upon to prevent a terrible fate befalling The City.

So, it’s kind of fun to me that in the same way Thief II is such a radical divergence from the fantastical elements of Thief, the City itself takes a hard swing from the Pagans’ ecoterrorism to a brutal industrial revolution. It’s reflected in the game’s missions, its plot, its characters, and its world. It’s both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness.

Which, then, is the better game? I don’t really have the answer to that, mostly because I suspect there isn’t one. It's a meaningless question, I reckon, but now that I've posed it: Thief II is an indisputably tighter product, and all the ways Thief shone, Thief II shines even brighter. It’s...I mean, it’s a masterpiece, right. But it’s also true that it’s lost some small trace of the original’s dark spark, erased by the march of industry and its joyless champions. Fitting, in a way, that these Mechanists and their prophecies of metal in the place of flesh are your enemy.

A dark spark, alive now only in the Maw of Chaos itself, and in the heart of the woman of the woods.

Thief II tells a very good story. It's a pretty smart evolution of the one told in the original, turning your victory over the Trickster into a long-running consequence. Did you do the right thing? Do you preserve the balance, or do your actions only throw everything out of whack? Was it worth this many security cameras, I mean really?

You should play it and find out.

Still the best stealth game ever made. It's a shame modern games lean on graphics prowess and lack the depth of a game like this. The vile sequels don't even begin to measure up.

I would marry this game tbh

Listen to me ... . If you choose to marry a real person, only marry someone that is also loving this game.

Things like these are important!

One of the best stealth games, the sequel improved on everything from the first game, the atmosphere the game portrays is amazing, you have to play this gem at least once if you like the stealth genre. As with the first game, there's tons of fan missions for Thief 2, with various missions even surpassing the quality of the original ones, which just adds a lot more playtime.

Hands down the best stealth game ever made.

From the atmosphere, world building, story, characters, and most of all gameplay, it's my favorite game of all time for a reason.

I play this game all the way through at least once a year, and highly, highly recommend it.

PS - Don't be fooled by the relatively low amount of hours Steam displays with my review. I have spent thousands of hours playing this game in my lifetime, and only more recently got a hold of the steam copy after my disc version finally stopped working due to overuse.

The granddaddy of all stealth games and what a lot of stealth games today aspire to be. Amazing atmosphere, great writing and an engaging protagonist who is much more relatable than those found in more modern stealth games. Despite the politics and social scandals taking place in the world around him, Garrett just comes off as a man who at the end of the day, just wants to pay his rent. He is given enough backstory to feel like an organic piece of the world around him but isn't beholden to any dark or gritty storylines. The game doesn't force any tragedies or sob stories onto the player, and like Garrett, we're simply an observer to the goings on.

Gameplay is also fantastic. The game is suitably dark but I never found areas too dark to navigate, more as there are just many dimly-lit corridors and pitch black corners for Garrett to exploit. The player's visibility is determined by the amount of light shining on them by the environment (or their own tools) as well as the amount of sound they're creating. The game takes full advantage of this system by offering the player a number of ways to cause noise or muffle it, snuff out fires, etc. Can't recommend this game enough for those who can see past the faults of older games (though Thief II is a much more tolerable experience due to its simplicity than similar titles of the era). Thief II is not only rewarding to play and interesting to explore, but an important piece of the history of the stealth genre.

From that era of pc games where writing was pretty good, graphics were decent, gameplay was fun, and controls were garbage
