Thief is... very linear.
Linear isn't always a bad thing, but some games take it too far.
It opens up a little bit here and there, but ultimately there's not a lot of deviation.

It can go borderless windowed. This is always a big bonus to me, as someone with two monitors, it's almost a necessity.

Fair warning however, mouse sensitivity is by default, abysmal. If you've any form of disability that inhibits your ability to move the mouse a lot, you'll want to turn your mouse way up for this game.

The sound design is pretty terrible. Turn down the music, the music is nice, but too loud. It's still a bit off, but that definitely helps a lot. As does turning on subtitles.

There's a button for quick load in the keybindings, but... for the life of me, I can't get it to work, no matter what I set it to. Whether or not I'm in combat, quick load isn't a thing. Quick save on the other hand, only started to work after the tutorial.

The protagonist gives a small lecture on not killing people. But I had a lot of fun trying to kill each guard with none of them knowing, so his lecture didn't sink in very much.

I've only played a little bit of the game so far, and may update this review in future. These are just my early views on the game.

There are points of no return that aren't very clearly marked. You could find yourself having completed a level before you've had a chance to look back for that one piece of loot you missed. So you then have to replay the whole level... sigh....

As far as stealthy sneaky collecting games go, it's alright. I neither recommend nor recommend against. It's decent. But it's very far from amazing.

It's one of those games that if you get spotted, you're better off reloading, because the combat is that unpleasant.
V to dodge, R to attack.

You can hide in cupboards.... you can't however hide bodies in cupboards.... Bit weird.

I've clicked recommend, because I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt. Maybe it will get better as the game goes on, so far it's not great, it's not a good first impression... Doesn't mean bad, just not good.

I tried really hard to like this, and with 21 hours in the game, I almost finished it. But with about a dozen side jobs left and two last story missions to go, I just couldn't do it. Traversing the city in this game is so tedious and boring, that I began to view opening the game with dread.

There are things to like:
- the stealth is quite satisfying, such as using shadows and swoop
- the graphics are beautiful and the voice acting is quite good (although FPS drops were common)
- lots of side jobs in addition to the main story
- the game is quite 'tactile' in the sense that you see the main character's hands a lot and gives a good immersive feel

The biggest problem is the level design which is just so bad. It is incredibly disappointing as this game could be amazing, but the more you explore, the more you hate exploring. There are nonsensical invisible walls everywhere. There are many places you should clearly be able to jump or climb, but the game severely limits your pathing and your routes become too linear. This is disappointing as the main areas you move through become bigger and bigger, but you just end up walking the same boring paths over and over. There are almost no places to really be creative about how you will move about, yet SO much of your time is just spent moving through the city, especially as there is no fast travel system (ordinarily, I don't like fast travel in games like this but because your movement and exploration are curtailed, I found myself wishing for it).

There are some interesting places to explore in the city, and it is fun discovering lots of little hidden areas with nice loot. The problem is that the linear pathing discourages exploration as you know that you are just going to be using the same two or three (and sometimes even one) way of getting places, and that you will be running into ledges, roofs etc. that you should definitely be able to climb, but the game decides you can't. Apparently, you can climb this box here, but that's not possible for this IDENTICAL box on the next street over.

There are also lots of loading screens even in relatively small areas. They are disguised, such as you opening a window and climbing through into the new area. Sometimes, you don't know if the window you are opening is really taking you into an interior, or loading you into a new area, which can make traversing the maze-like city confusing. The map you are given is poorly laid out, and for some inexplicable reason, none of the areas are named.

I will say that the poor level design doesn't always extend to the story missions, which do sometimes allow for more creativity. Unfortunately, the majority of your time is spent in the city. The most disappointing thing is that the game actually gives you some pretty good stealth mechanics and options for lethal and non-lethal takedowns - it just doesn't let you really explore them as you wish, due to the poor level design. Also, even in the mission stories, there are no options. You can walk in through the front door, the balcony or the basement maybe, but those are the extent of your choices - the objectives or how to approach them offer no variety.

If you don't care about being able to move freely and don't mind linear movement with little room for creativity, then give the game a go. The rest of it is pretty good if you go in with low to medium expectations. For me, it was just too limiting and by the end of Chapter 6 (there are 8 in total), I was just so bored of moving through the same areas in the same ways over and over, I just had to stop. If you do want a game with better level design and more freedom (and a better story), try Dishonored.

First thing I did after completing Thief was to go back and check the release date of Dishonored and it feels very strange that Dishonored was released two years before Thief did. If it was released in 2008-2010 period this would have been a masterpiece but after Dishonored it just feels lacklustre, especially when it comes to movement, level design and story (and I say this even before including the blink option in Dishonored as it doesn't seem fair).

Still, if you enjoy stealth games, Thief is a must-play especially if you have gone through Dishonored.

I keep going back to Thief just because I loved it so much. The atmosphere is dark and very detailed; I keep finding more places to explore throughout the city. Really enjoyed the pace and mechanics, the puzzles didn't seem out of place and there's always another way through a problem that seems confrontational.
The graphics are great and ambience is greatly curated.
Felt really immersed in Chapter 5, which took an unexpected turn into creepiness - beware of that, I'm pretty sensitive to horror games and it took a while to get over the initial jumpscare.

Particularly enjoyed Chapter 4, that delved more into Thief's world upper class and how different their atmosphere was built in relation to the rest of the game.

Haven't played previous games of Thief so I cant say if this is better or not. This was my first stealth game, and boy did I love it. I really loved his hand motions- the pickpocketing, cutting [stealing] the paintings, the way he searches the right book to pull when he's looking for a secret passage-- i might be getting too into it lol, but i just love the little details. Talking about little details-the Montonessi paintings (collectibles) were really beautiful as well.
Interesting main story, though the ending wasnt as good as the buildup. Also there are a lot of side missions, all with little stories. And some collectibles require you to listen to civilians' chit-chat, etc..
The only con for me was the NPCs.. The game has a feature, where, if you're not under direct light I guess you're literally invisible? Which is stupid because you can be 1-2m away from a guard and he has no idea lol. The game is actually pretty dark though, so maybe they just dont see..?

Anyways, pretty cool game, I recommend it :)

Thief is a game which while good, does have a pretty simple gameplay loop which could most likely be boring for most.

The core premise of the game is to go about unraveling the story that you've been dropped into, but while doing so, trying to avoid any and all confrontation, while at the same time trying to find and steal as much loot as possible. The loot itself is used to buy more arrows to aid you in getting around levels without being caught, or for food as a healing item in case you take damage.
For most people though, I feel this might be a bit too boring, unless you're into looting a map or level to its completion, even if there's no major benefit at the end of it all.

In terms of age, the game still does hold up relatively well, but you can easily see where mechanics or visuals are a bit older.
However, the one main issue this game does have, is a handful of audio bugs/issues which will never be fixed unless you find a patch which does so. A main audio bug you'll come across will be if you take out a guard, then when they hit the floor, there will be a loud thud even when there shouldn't be.

Simply put, if you don't mind searching multiple drawers, cabinets, etc. and you find the game interesting even for being a few years old, and can get past the handful of general issues which the devs never decided to fix, then I do recommend the game, more so if on sale, whether it be for the story, or just for the feeling of being a thief.

Some YouTube reviews may lead you believe this game isn't any good, but after giving it a go, overall I enjoyed it. The cutscenes and dialogue are a bit lackluster, the lack of the original Garrett voice actor is a big loss. But that is why this is a game and not a movie. Some levels such as the asylum didn't feel as scary as previous Thief games as there were fewer enemies, however that actually made for a better experience. There are definitely way too many items to steal on missions, and getting stuck in repetitive animations can be stressful, e.g. accidentally sliding in front of enemy view whilst going through the cabinet opening animation. There are lots of new additions to the gameplay, such as different thieving tools, dash ability and option to hide in cabinets. The variety of levels is good, except the boss battles which are more annoying than fun. After you have finished the storyline, there are a number of other missions and loot to find around the city. You can also replay missions, which is nice to get that 100%. Compared to Thief 3, the city map is very confusingly laid out, making transition between districts annoying (you don't go through the main gates, rather some obscure window somewhere), but after you do it quite a few times you will figure it out. Definitely a fun game though, check it out if you like sneaking and the steampunk genre.

- Really confusing map, and not in a way that's fun to figure out.
- Completely indecipherable plot with unfulfilling ending.
- Monochromatic environments not pleasant to look at for 15 hours.
- Upgrades and economy are largely unnecessary, and consequently...
- ...stealing things isn't that useful, contrary to the title.
- Massive number of checklist items to steal, going to drive you nuts if you're a must-100%-everything person.
- Melee combat is pointless when you can just back up and shoot enemies in the head.

If you need to scratch the stealth itch, just do another playthrough of Hitman, Splinter Cell, Dishonored, etc. This game has all the un-fun parts of the stealth genre, and only a little of the good.

Mediocre, a classic example of a bought out IP whos game designers and directors had no touch with the originals. Not a bad game, but the game is a 3/10, being uninteresting with OK gameplay.
The game opens up at first, it made me excited thinking it was an open world sandbox, something like an assassins creed, but instead whose focus was collecting money for your own personal greed. This is just the opening however, and the rest of the game is small and claustorphobic. You think you can explore freely a large map freely, but you need to go to end points on the map which load different areas. When backtracking, any killed guards do not stay dead, making travelling the world a chore. The game gives you mysteries to wonder about, but due to lack of character development, and it being derived to be dark and gloomy forcibly, any meaningful world building seems more farce than actual plot- the characters do not match the game. Stealth mechanics work and are fine, there are a selection of arrow types, all of which work well. Given this game being laughable at some sections, and fine in others, I'd give it an average of 6/10 at most. I had this on sale for 3 dollars. Unless you really enjoy stealth games regardless of there theme or mechanics, I would advise to only pick it up for less than 10 dollars. 6/10 overall score.

The tutorial and first mission feel very forced and unnatural. After that, the game is an amazing lurking/stealth game. Game has some horror feeling moments but I haven't had anything truly scary happen yet.

Edit: Game go epic scary mode for like 1-2 missions and the ending was, sadly, really bad imo

The Thief series is fundamentally a game about hiding in shadows and moving quietly to avoid being detected by enemies. I have played every Thief game. Despite some crying and negative comments about this version, this rendition of Thief although not perfect is a good version of the franchise. The game play mechanics is sometimes a bit awkward but generally neat, the visuals of this game, the graphics are amazing and the immersive experience is second to none. Playing in hard mode is almost identical to the original games. This is such a under rated game it deserves so much more credit. Don't listen to the self absorbed crybaby comments this is a good, well developed stealth game. Well worth the money especially when on sale.

A very successful and excellent game in the style of stealth and stealing, from one of the Square enix studios. To think that the game is just to its gameplay. It is a very complex story that in the missions of the game where the installment is stealing from different places, other things happen that attract the player. In this game, ammo is very important and if you lose, your job will be hard to hide. The gameplay is very good and can keep you entertained for many hours.
The game, as you know, is open world, but with small and winding alleys where the enemy can be anywhere. Theft and the story happen together and steal in the game to upgrade your character and make your ammo stronger and fuller. The game requires a weak system that everyone can experience.
+ There is a section in the settings to remove the HUD and you can take beautiful screenshots of this game. For example :

It's ok. You get a rush for treasure hunting after a while. It gets satisfying to find/reach/steal precious items.
The city has severals areas with loading screens and everytime respawing opponents. So to get from one point to another it happend a lot to me to get in a dead end. A fasttravel function for the city would be nice.
I also miss a setting in the options for the cam shaking. The shaking/bobbing during movement feels more annoying than realistic.
But it's overall an atmospheric game that let you choose to reach the goal with stealth or lethal gameplay.

Diet Dishonored, Thief in name only. The lore has been completely rebooted, Garret doesn't act like Garret at all, and everything story related is off.

Gameplay has more in common with Dishonored than the Thief series, with hub areas followed by more structured linear levels. Only in Thief '14, the levels are greatly simplified even compared to Dishonored. Gone are the massive (if fantastical) structures with multiple routes and complex objectives. The inventory has been incredibly simplified, rope arrows are incredibly scene specific (why does the wood beam need rope tied around it to be attached to?) It should have been taken out of the game if the developers didn't want to put any effort into it. Like moss arrows, which have been taken out for... what reason?

Ok ok, aside from comparisons to the namesake series, what about casual stealth fans. Honestly, fun can be had as such. The graphics are drab, but high quality. The swoop move can be fun, even if it almost breaks all of the stealth, and even though they are linear the maps can be decent, in a fun house ride kind of way.

The main game breaking flaw for me is the inconsistent traversal controls. Jump has been made context sensitive because... jumping is too complicated for modern gamers? Obviously not, more likely the designers wanted to make level design easier for the developers. I mean, okay? Whatever, I guess I could live with it, but in those context sensitive scenarios, you can never be certain if you are going to jump from one beam to another OR, in the worst design decision you could make in a stealth game, using the same key can have you jump off and go below. Wut? There is no reason this should be the same keybind. Movement in a stealth game needs to be a certainty. Having the context be ambiguous on whether you will jump across to safety or down into detection cannot be a problem in a stealth game. Jumping from a rope? Good luck on going where you want. Trying to drop from a rope, haha nope not gonna happen.

The game as is cannot be great, probably not even good stealth TBH, but if the major flaws could be modded then the game could be at least enjoyable in a mindless fashion. The game is locked tight, no modding.

I used to be disappointed in Thief 3, this game completely changed my mind on that game. This is like the Deus Ex Invisible War of the Thief series, only this killed the Thief series so far. Deus Ex lived on, in a lesser diluted version.

Play Thief 1-3, or Dishonored 1-2 if you are wanting a more mellow experience. This can be an alright $5 afternoon playthrough, but I can't fully forgive its flaws.

Despite trepidation regarding the mass of negative reviews from series veterans I gave this game a shot and from the perspective of never having played the original games but having many hours in other stealth games including Dishonored which Thief is often compared to, I had fun. Thief definitely does the job of a thief simulation justice whereas dishonored obviously is more refined with assassinations and combat. Sneaking through a manor and methodically opening every drawer and cupboard felt very satisfying. Thief's tools are more grounded in reality and trickery and manipulation to safely move from A to B feels good. Chase scenes are also cool here both as cinematic set pieces and just at random if you choose to avoid save-scumming and get spotted, as Garret is not the kind of character that can stand up to 5 guards at once. Speaking of Garret, with more personality than Corvo and (thankfully) much less personality than Styx, he's a solid protagonist. I felt the villains were a bit shallow and the weird fights at the end with them were a bit clunky but in general they worked. Not sure if I really understood the ending's significance but at least the final encounter was innovative.

Overall I'd say if you enjoy modern stealth games this is definitely worth a shot for $5-10

PS not going into detail bc it'd ruin it but the asylum level is absolutely the highlight of this experience

I was going to uninstall the game and never touch it again after I played it for 45 minutes, because I was bored (especially since I prefer the loud and aggressive mode instead of going stealth). But I decided to give Thief a second chance before uninstalling it. And it was, in fact, the right decision.

Thief has a great start. You get immediately thrown into the story and almost don’t notice that you are playing the tutorial. That’s what games need to do more often: Integrate the tutorial into the story. The story is solid and remains interesting until the end. The plot twists are expectable, but it is still entertaining to follow it and to watch the cutscenes. I was furthermore happy with the ending. It is rather unusual.

The game itself feels a lot like Dishonored (in worse). Sneak around enemies or try to hit them with your stick. You also have some gadgets, mainly arrows, that will be useful for different reasons (depending on your playstyle). There are also some Tomb Raider elements, as for the example the old temple and all the different puzzles that you will have to solve (they aren’t complicated – don’t worry).

The amount of hidden rooms in this game is annoying though. And they all hired the same installation company, because it is either a book that you must move, or a stone button camouflaged in a wall that you need to press.

The graphics aren’t amazing, but they are totally fine (this game came out in 2014). The ambient fits perfectly to the game and the story (be aware that it’s very dark most of the time).

I am glad that I gave this game a second chance. It is, even though it’s definitely not one of my favourite games, a solid title. The story isn’t too long either (about 6 hours). Give it a try, if you like stealth games.

As far as successors to Thief, this strives to be one much harder than actiony Dishonored, but fails to deliver. Nailed atmosphere and tone give way to simplistic, small, linear levels and a story that has all the elements in place for greatness, but doesn't execute on them. Oh what could've been...

I vaguely remember playing one of the earlier Thief games when I was a kid, although for the life of me I can’t remember which one. Whichever it was, I know I didn’t make it very far! After liking what I saw when watching a friend playing this Thief on Twitch, I decided to give it a try. Fortunately it was already in my library, so it must have been nicely discounted or I got it in a bundle at some point.

The game started off very strong, catching my intrigue with the prologue. While the graphics aren’t anything special, the initial setting still looked awesome, the voice acting sounded great, and I really enjoyed it as an introduction to the story and gameplay mechanics. The initial gameplay was pretty intense too, while teaching all of the important aspects of the game. Sneaking around, stealing (who’d have thought!), interacting with different items and objects. It was all carried out in a rather impressive manner, drawing me into the rest of the game!

Character progression in Thief is alright, but not much more than that. There are a few different tools you can purchase once you progress a little into the game. These make for different gameplay, allow access to different areas, and give more reason to visit previous areas if you didn’t have the tools previously. The thing I don’t like about this is that you are supposed to be a “master thief” already, so why the heck don’t you have these rather basic tools? There are a number of different arrow types, making for some potentially interesting and different playthroughs. There’s water arrows to snuff out torches, blunt arrows to turn off light switches from afar or simply distract enemies, sawtooth arrows for deadly take-downs, rope arrows to allow climbing in certain areas, along with several other arrow types, each with their own uses.

You have a focus mode which can be activated for a number of benefits, like easily locating items to steal. You can find and buy “focus” points which can be used to upgrade different traits or abilities, making focus mode an invaluable asset the further you progress. You can invest in things like combat, which will allow you to stun or knock out opponents more easily, or stealth, which allows you to move quicker while making less sound, along with a few other traits. I’m terrible at taking stealthy routes in any game, so I mainly invested in combat, marksman, speed and sense, allowing me to keep track of where enemies were and quickly take them down.

The main reason I became so invested in the game was due to the story, and I enjoyed the voice acting and cut-scenes too. I was always compelled to find out more. I was often distracted by the various side-quests too, of which there are plenty of! The various documents and items found throughout the game were pretty interesting too, and unlike some games, the information contained in some of documents are actually of value for other interactions, such as figuring out combinations to safes. These clues aren’t always as obvious as they first seem either, which is an aspect I really enjoyed. Naturally it frustrated me a little at times too, but that just led to a more satisfied feeling once I managed to put the clues together.

As with most games, there were aspects I really didn’t like or appreciate. One of these was the lack of jumping. It’s generally something I’d expect to find in most games of this nature, but the fact that you’re apparently this nimble thief who can’t jump? What’s all that about? Another issue I had is with the city. While pretty large and impressive, it’s also very restrictive in where you can and can’t go, and a big chunk of the gameplay is spent trying to navigate around the map. Then there are windows and wooden beams that require opening or pushing to the side to access certain areas. This required constantly tapping keys or buttons. The needless constant tapping of buttons, along with forced repetitive scenes such as when buying focus points, which you can only buy one at a time, were the only things I truly despised about the game.

Despite its flaws, I’m glad I decided to give Thief a try. For the most part, it’s a really fun and intense game. The story was intriguing and compelling, complemented by the voice acting, and the gameplay often had me sitting on the edge of my seat as I tried sneaking my way past guards, ultimately failing, and having to fight my way out. It’s just let down by some minor, but rather impactful flaws. It’s certainly worth a playthrough, and it’s a game that’s regularly on sale, so there’s little to lose from doing so.

Thief succeeds as a good reboot, and also as an interesting offering in the action and stealth genre. It has an awesome setting, composed of great artistic work and a superb dubbing. It might also be the best thievery simulator – where the adrenaline and thrill of the steal is replicated – put together yet. Thief manages to deliver a compelling experience. One of the best action-stealth games I have ever played.

A fuckin' slog to play through.

The environment is pretty well done, and really atmospheric or even immersive at times (god forbid), the game also looks nice but that's honesly just about it... yep, that's all the good stuff I can personally think of. The bad stuff in this game is that fucking overwhelming.

First of all, every single fucking action your characeter takes is like a minicutscene or a minigame/quick time event of some sorts, the game overall feels kinda shitty to play, it's extremely janky (in a bad kinda way) and extremely linear in terms of what you're allowed to do in an open environment.
The combat is an insult, literally feels like playing a mobile game.
The AI is awful and buggy as shit at times.
The music from the majority just doesn't fit the environment or the situation very well (with a few exceptions ofcourse, one of em being the sneaking through stuff music, those tracks are actually really good and get the feel across).
The story, the fucking story dude.... Basic, generic, extremely predictable from the start, boring, sloppy and obviously rushed. *Spoilers ahead* : The game, all the way throughout is desperately trying to make you care about a character that is just a bland, annoying fuckin' nuisance, piece of shit brat that adds nothing to the whole experience. The ending sucks cock, doesn't explain shit (not that it's even trying to hide something in some cryptic way) and is the exact same no matter the actions you take throughout the playthrough.
The characters are extremely forgettable and have no substance to them, literally couldn't even be bothered to remember the names of the main characters half the time, because the game doesn't even give them enough exposure for you to get the feel for them, which is a pretty fucking big mistake if you want the players to care at all about them in the first place. In the case of your character they give you more than enough time I guess to kinda get what he's about, but it doesn't really matter 'cause your character is boring as fuck anyway, which is honestly a shame.
The upgrade system is alright I guess, doesn't do anything interesting or innovative though.
The voice acting is what it is, just run of the mill stuff that doesn't stand out.
Secrets are not really satisfying to find at all, it's just like yup I got that, now let's get outta there. They're in the game just for the sake of them being there to fill up time.
The level design is often confusing, especially the city areas, like Stonemarket, the Docks (that's not what it's called I know, I don't remember what it's called aight, cut me some slack please) or what have you, they feel like a maze and just blend together (in a bad, confusing, ifuriating way).
The game is also pretty shittely optimised, the loading screens are generally slow, even the quicksave ones which should load fucking immediately, the game is jittery for some time when you enter a new area, so much in fact I fell through the floor once and fucking died, it's annoying.

I guess that's about that, it's a fucking disappointment. Spits on the legacy of the first two games, which are fantastic, go play them if you haven't. Defenetly wouldn't recommend buying it at its' full price point, and would still be hesitant about recommending it even if it was on sale, unless you're really into steampunk/victorian england sort of environment/feel and really like stealth games don't bother with it.

Can't personally ever see myself revisiting this. What a fucking mess.

So I've taken the opportunity to take a break from my usual games of competitive nature and find some games more or less single player driven. Few and far between now a days in good old 2020.

Now, with that said. I've missed games such as the original assassins creed trilogy and I've was in and out of this games store page because of it looked interesting but the research I did on the game showed it was relatively poorly received, by fans of the franchise I guess of the first 2 original games (of which i'll be honest I have not played) and I guess by most critics at the time of this games release (particularly loading times).

Honestly maybe i'm missing something but i'll start with this. This game was released in 2014 and by a graphical standard should not look this damn good. I'm running this game highest settings at 144hz and the First person experience is unlike any I've experienced. I'm dead serious. Games released in the past 2 years for some reason look shittier than this game truly (looking at you Madden).

Next the gameplay, I read so many reviews bitching about the clunky nature of movement in this game. Clearly the person who wrote that review either didn't spend jack time learning how to control the character or just tested positive for sucking at the game but movement feels great to me. I've actually had moments where (playing on Master out the gate btw) made 3 split second decisive movements in a certain moment in order to avoid detection from like 2-3 different directions and after I was safe just thought damn that was nuts and it felt so good to pull that off.

The gameplay overall, some tools seem like they just aren't needed as much but honestly the beauty of the game is if you want to use them you can, or if you want to try do without them then find a way. It's your choice. One review I read was some dude bitching about he was trying to use fire or water arrows in some stupid way and was crying about how the developers didn't foresee that they might be used in that matter. Like alright bro my inner Software engineer wanted to strangle him.

Also I'm no voice acting expert but apparently that was a point of contention here too.... honestly I don't see anything great or bad about it, but i can definitely say I have seen HELLA worse.

So far the story is interesting enough to keep me engaged as a drop in player who hasn't played any of the rest of the series and the moral of the story is this. Try the damn game it might just surprise the hell out of you as it did out of me. This game from 2014 as flawed as it apparently when it came out is far in away better than some of the trash I've seen in recent years. Hope I helped someone! I'm done ranting **** I mean reviewing now!

*Update* Finished the game. Still not really feelin' it. There's a lack of freedom that really feels like it limits how you can traverse the city and situations. There are also multiple situations where it feels like there's only one real way through which isn't what I want from a stealth game. The game does look lovely and putting out lights or stealing loot pickpocketing feels pretty fun the whole game, but the rest of it feels a bit undercooked.

*Original text from 2020!*
I bought this when it came out because it was a graphical showcase but never played much of it. I might have liked it more then, but playing this in 2020, it feels so restrictive. There's a lack of freedom when it comes to approaching locations, usually offering maybe 2 realistic paths and maybe a third if you bring an upgrade with you. You can only climb on certain things if the game allows you to, but its hard trying to figure out why you can climb over one fence and not another. It's not the worst thing I've played, but I'm pretty sure most people would recommend the other games in the series over this one. Also, something about this just feels a little...trite or contrived? Garret and every other character I've met feels more like an archetype instead of an actual character. The one good thing is the world feels lived in though.

Good game, unfortunately it doesn't have the same voice actor as the original actor because the company decided to can him - shame on them! - but it has plenty of improvements. Higher res textures and models than the previous games, there's no more sword, but the game is supposed to be about sneaking. You can still play with hit-and-run tactics, but once you're detected combat becomes more difficult. Hiding bodies could have been done better, it takes Garret forever to drag them around, and he can't hide them in any closets, even though they seem to be all over - Sam Fisher he is not. The footsteps sounds have been much improved, Garret no longer wears wooden clogs, a nice change, the story is decent, although part of it still revolves around magic, which some may not like as much, and challenge maps have been added with different modes like stealing to keep the timer going, another interesting and fun addition. Aside from that I don't think you should need to pay extra to get all the DLCs or challenge maps, I feel like they should be included for what you get; the bank map was not very challenging nor was it all that big either. All in all I'd give it a 8.5 - 8.8 out of 10 because of a few shortcomings like the high res textures could be even higher res, and there is no way to increase the detail of the models or the environment, but overall the game is well done.

Anyway, Taffers, buy it now before Dec 1, or if you missed the sale wait for it to go on sale again and you will be able to get the entire Thief collection and DLC for under $10.

This game is largely a travesty. Small, linear levels that completely missed the point of the original Thief trilogy. Pre-set rope arrow points remove the sense of exploration and excitement when you find a new area using them. It could be worse, but not by much... Play the original trilogy, its cheaper and better. Then check out The Dark Mod

Feels like a proper Thief game. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and that the context is hard to grasp. Something I liked about the old games: it leaves you hanging sometimes, hides relevant details in letters or conversations. All that creates an unsettling, tense atmosphere that suits the game really well. Same with the gloomy city and its grim environment. However, I can see the story can be unsatisfying for some players and the city too monotonous for completionists. For me, this game was a lot of fun.

but as someone who havent yet played the original Thief games, this one was just pure joy.

Ofc I have a lot of favorite games, but this is one of them lol.

I can definitely recommend this game to people who want to get into it
without thinking its just like the original games. Its a great thieving game,
lots of fun for collecting, shooting the bow and escaping the guards.
There was also some spooky parts in the story which made me scared,

It doesnt matter if you loved the previous entries in the series because this game sucks no matter what expectation you have.

Garrett has fallen victim to dementia as he doesnt know how to swim or jump anymore. The context specific jumps sometimes dont work and the ropearrows would have been less embarrassing if they didnt put them in the game in the first place. He also doesnt climb up any ledge unless there is birdshit to put his fingers into or a blue grid that allows him to use the claw which has no other real use besides that.

Did you like the hammerites or the pagans? Well, you better didnt because they are totally gone.
And what is it with Garrett stealing cutlery and other things which hold basically no value? This game is the nail in the coffin for one of my favorite franchises ever and if you play it you will see why.

The stealth part of the game is pretty basic and seen before, it doesn't have any revolutionary new mechanics, but what shines through in this game is the level design, each level is unique and each has some amazing events in it, going with a different style than the last and they pretty much nail it every time. The story is good, but nothing to write home about,

It is a really nice game. Not too long not too short, has a good story, not too complicated gameplay mechanics, good graphics (even in 2021), great atmosphere.
There are flaws (map system, minimap, etc.), but overall a great experience with a small amount of horror elements. Recommended.

I don't understand why there's so much hate out there for this game. It's a really good stealth game, solid mechanics, excellent level design, if you like stealth games, this one is a 5/5, a 10/10, an A+. I think the game came out around the same time as Dishonored, another Unreal Engine 3 stealth focused first person game which turned out to be a darling of the video game critics' world. Also, it looked like absolute garbage on the Xbox360/PS3 consoles, even by the standards of games on those consoles, I've seen better textures on the Dreamcast. Whatever the reason, if you didn't play it in 2014, do not delay, pick it up.

As a fan of the original Thief trilogy, this game is just plain awful. It's a terrible on-rails experience that leaves little to actual player agency (something the old games did well). And the terrible re-boot story they're going for is very hollow, and doesn't have the grimdark and occult charm of the original.

I had no knowledge about the Thief games until I tried this one. It looked cool and I really wanted to enjoy it, I really tried to but I just couldn't. So unfortunately I'll list the cons first (with no comparisons to previous games).
Garrett. I've never hated a protagonist as much as him. He's just so... cringey. The story was okay at certain points, but often predictable. The core of the game - being a quiet thief and taking your time - is ruined because sounds aren't accurate to their location. The combination of a restricted map (you can't freely explore, climb, or even jump), inconsistent gameplay/AI (guards will randomly see you in areas they didn't before, awkward 3rd person climbing sequences randomly), and a jank combat system (takedowns are one button, melee is weak, many items are not useful), created an overall frustrating experience, especially towards the end. I couldn't finish the game, but apparently the ending is not good.
The pros that I can say is that the world has a unique feel to it; the steampunk environment was definitely well-made. The game is not complicated and there's no big learning curve for it. And looting is easy, you can't really pass over loot locations. But that's it, really.
Overall: buy on a big sale, if you really have to. Otherwise just watch gameplays.

If you are expecting a Thief sequel, this is not it. Check out Gloomwood instead.

This is a love story. You play as Gary the Thug who gets friendzoned by the love of his life Erin when he refuses to murder random civilians for a dollar. She then gets kidnapped by a rich man like the gold digger she is and you spend the rest of the game stealing cheap common everyday items to be able to afford a tier 3 sub to buy back her respect for you.

Luckily, this game is very cheap when on sale because it's garbage compared to previous games in the series.

I stole garbage like pen, scissor, syringe etc... what am I a garbage stealing thief?

Great atmosphere loved it.
Fine voice acting.
Story was meh. Childish selfish Erin kinda like Daniel from Lis2.

Too much garbage to loot.
Terrible Combat.
Useless ability, useless arrows barely needed to use them.
Stupid passage, have to spam x to lift and boom stupid loading screen.
Chapter 5 was creepy

Personally I didn't quite like the game or would recommend it.

Reboot of a classic stealth trilogy about master thief Garrett. Game is a first person stealth adventure with a huge amount of things to steal, vast city to explore and optional combat. Obviously this game is not even close in immersion and gameplay to the originals, but it is not so bad like people say. I can recommend it to people who temper their expectations and just want to play a decent stealth game.

Pros:
- Great art design;
- Graphical fidelity;
- Responsive controls;
- Smooth animations;
- Decent soundtrack;

Cons:
- Some levels too linear;
- Bugs and glitches;
- Confusing navigation in city;
- Mediocre story;

Setting aside that it's a pretty miserable follow-up to the the original Thief games, it's just not a good standalone game either. Pretty much the only thing it has going for it is that the graphics are decent. Otherwise there's really nothing good here.

Combat is crap.
The maps and your progression through them are linear. Climb through a window or go through a door and watch as it locks behind you.
AI is atrocious.
The game takes away much of the freedom that you've come to take for granted in most stealth games. It doesn't even have jumping. I mean, come on!
The story is atrocious.
They butchered my boy Garrett completely. He's now some emo dude who really needs to see a therapist.

I can sit here listing things all day, but the bottom line is that there's no reason to play this over the original Thief trilogy or Dishonored 1 and 2. I'd even go so far as to say Dishonored 1 and 2 are better sequels to the Thief trilogy than this game. And Dishonored is a game about a magical wizard assassin.

This just feels below average from what in thought it was going to be.
The story is about the beloved thief Garrett and his journey in The City fighting against the Baron and his guards, discovering what had happened to Erin, and of course: stealing. It's not the best told story as the pacing is poor and there is a lot of filler which made me uninterested in the plot which is quite upsetting.
Graphically it has aged a bit but it still works fine. The setting of The City isn't that impressive and feels repetitive over a while of traversing from one level to the other and with levels feeling the same but with slight difference in the way you can approach the mission but nothing impactful to touch upon. Atmosphere however is done well with it feeling dark and gloomy and fits to whatever level the player is in.
Sound and audio is not that great with the audio for certain actions being annoying over the playtime and being of a poor quality and the soundtrack being average.
In terms of gameplay, it works fine. There's nothing special about it as traversing through the world is stiff, the unlocking mechanics are just repetitive and feels stale over time and that enemies aren't really that much of a challenge. The use of having different types of arrows adds variety but was nothing to marvel at. The stealth mechanics worked sometimes being inconsistent and purchasing upgrades or buying new equipment never felt useful at all. Stealing items never felt satisfying and the vision ability that Garrett is able to use feels like a rip off of the detective mode in the arkham games. One issue that i really had with the game was the load times as it would take ages to load into another part of The City or just to start a level
Overall, Thief 2014 was a major letdown on its release and has not stood the test of time. This game ultimately lacks any unique ideas or improves on what its predecessors were able to achieve before it. It just feels like another generic first person open world game that should simply be forgotten about.

A theivieng game in a steam punk kinda middle age setting?
Sounded promising but the execcution wasnt good enough.

Pros:
*Decent Graphics for the time
*Solid Controls
*Atmospheric

Cons:
*Bad story with cliffhanger ending (the ending is illogical and rushed)
*The architecture of the town is bad
*The town map you can use is crap

All in all spend your time and money on something better.
It's a mediocre game.

I enjoy all of the Thief Series In almost every aspect

but I dislike thief 2014 cuz its too easy, No custom levels, not really all that open ended choice wise.

and the Real reason is being stuck in the hellish maze that is the Town map for a majority of my playthrough lol, its just a mess map wise but overall its not great but not bad.

2/5 fine during the start, bad at the end

If you can look past the atrocity that is chapter 7, the thief-taker general fight, and the anti-climactic story, the game isnt all bad. The problem is that I cant look past these flaws.

The thief-taker general fight is easily the worst boss fight of any game, he one shots you, he 180 insta-kills you with no warning of him even knowing where you are, and he'll shoot exploding bolts at random that can kill you with splash damage.

On top of that fight you need to progress through chapter 7 that, for me at least, was extremely annoying and time consuming.

Even after going through all that, the ending makes it feel like everything you just went through was worthless and didnt matter at all.

Although all these problems exist, if the game is on sale I still think you should buy it and play until chapter 7, at which point, you should stop... forever.

Not a bad game, but it is hard to be a ghost style thief. And for some reason finding every collectible is impossible for me. I would have to google but I couldn't bother and not gonna replay chapters. I liked they way how one chapter had horror elements. Game is too short imo tho. And the lack of fast travel, well there is no fast travel, you have to walk.
