Über das Spiel

Willkommen in Thimbleweed Park. Einwohnerzahl: 80 Verrückte.

Great Game. If you played Adventures back in the day you will enjoy this. Lots of references to the classics and some good new gimmicks and ideas. Of course - the brilliance of 'day of the tentacle' will never be reachable and this game doesn't not as well.

If you are new to this genre and never heard of the X-Files - this might not your style. But when it's on sale then give it a shot.

Replayed this game after Return To Monkey Island got announced. I'm so lucky to have barely remembered any details about the game during this playthrough, because now that I've finished it again, I can positively say that this is as much of a classic as the original Monkey Island. Can't wait to play Ron Gilbert's 'latest and greatest.'

Thimbleweed Park is an old school point & click adventure.

The plot & stories start off intriguing. It has a Twin Peaks vibe with main characters who look like Mulder & Scully. There are humorous things going on throughout. This expands for a little bit, but eventually gets to a point where the plot and stories get bogged down and go nowhere. You'll probably have a pretty decent idea of where the main plot is going after reading Chuck's diary. The game doesn't resolve in any sort of satisfying or clever manner.

I mentioned the humor as a positive but it can be a negative as well since certain jokes are beaten into the ground. If you didn't like it the first time, or stopped liking it after the 5th or 6th time, you ain't gonna like it the 50th or 100th time....adoo. Also, a lot of the humor are just references.

The characters are a mostly negative mixed bag ranging from ok to bad. Main character wise, there's no one really likable other than Delores maybe? Aside from Chuck, none of the side characters are developed or memorable in any real way. They're there to be part of 1 or 2 puzzles, and then you'll never care about them again.

Ransome is particularly annoying. He's a clown who insults people and swears. This is fine at first, but as mentioned, the joke is run into the ground. He has a word(s) bleeped out every time he talks. I don't care about the swearing or bleeping. The problem is his character is akin to one of those women who constantly uses the word literally or like every other sentence. He's inherently insufferable due to this.

Because of all these problems, the weight of the game almost entirely falls on the puzzles. Many of these are fine. When these puzzles are plentiful, the game moves along at a decent pace and can be enjoyable. The problem is that eventually you're going to run out of those puzzles and only be left with the numerous terrible puzzles that are bad due to all the following issues.

Nonsensical puzzles: There are a bunch, especially late in the game.

Character related puzzles: During the course of the game, you'll have 5 playable characters. All of them have their own To-Do list of things you need to complete (sometimes shared, sometimes solo). Some puzzles can only be solved by specific characters, and for several of them, there is no reason why. You'll only solve the puzzle if you happen to try out every character on it.

Chapter timed puzzles: Many puzzles on your To-DO lists can only be solved during specific chapters. The problem here is you often get items (including a lot of red-herring items) related to these puzzles way before you can actually do anything with them. When you get stuck, you are lead to think that it must be related towards some of the quests you already have items for or those red herring items. This will lead you to spend large chunks of time trying to figure out something that is currently impossible, and you have no way of knowing that.

As an example of the above, Chuck's room includes a safe that requires his fingerprint. You get the fingerprint kit, dust, and tape relatively early in the game. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get into that safe since I had every item needed and an entire room that Chuck lived in to lift a fingerprint. Turns out, there is a glass in the Factory (which is locked until towards the end of the game) on Chuck's desk that you get the fingerprint from. Apparently, the ton of other objects that Chuck has touched throughout his lifetime are impossible to lift a fingerprint from. Only that one specific glass you have no way of knowing exists until you run into it has a lift-able fingerprint.

Size of the game: Early on, you have no means of quick travel but are limited to the highway area and town. Later on you get a map which lets you quick travel to all locations. The problem here is that if you get stuck early game, you have to slowly run all over town (especially annoying are running to the murder scene & through the cemetery). Later on, the biggest issue is that if you get stuck, you're going to have to check every building/location, and there are at least 15 of these. Then keep in mind the puzzle you're stuck on might be character specific, so you have to do this with each character, just in case. Then keep in mind the character might need a specific item, so you need to get them together with everyone else so you can dump the large amount of items to them (including those red herrings). Then keep in mind that the puzzle might only be solvable in a future chapter.

The game provides a hintline, which is nice. The problem is that even this hintline is made annoying. You have to find a phone and dial the number. Instead of telling you a hint, the game will give you a list of hints you can choose between. This seems nice, but is aggravating as it wastes your time. You may pick a hint and it simply tells you there are no available hints for that topic and then hangs up. Now you have to pick up the phone and redial the hint line. You might pick a topic that gives you hints towards stuff that isn't currently completable. There is no going back in the hintline menu, so in order to pick a topic for another hint, you have to hang up the phone and dial back in again. You often have to dial the number 3 or 4 times before you actually get some information you can put to use.

Thimbleweed Park simply has too many problems related to its puzzles. The biggest issue though may be the lack of charm or sense of progression. After a while, you won't really care about anything you're doing. Solving puzzles rarely feels rewarding, or like you made any real progress, or anything interesting or clever is coming up. It's an ok at best throwback game. It kept the worst of the past (not to mention adding more issues) without bringing the charm, cleverness, or innovation that made those old school games memorable.

Very fun game.
The story is great and full of surprises, the puzzles challenging and the humor very amusing.
I loved it from the beginning, in particular the characters are very interesting and different from each other: the way their road cross to achieve a common goal to reach an unusual ending is quite genious.

What an awesome point & click adventure game! It gave me a lot of nostalgic vibes It presented a good challenge on the difficulty side, all the while being a ton of fun with its clever humor, smart dialogue, and faithfulness to the classic adventure games of yesteryears. I highly recommended this one.

Thimbleweed Park is a graphic adventure in the style of the classic LucasArts adventures, such as the Monkey Island series, and specifically Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle. As I am a big fan if the LucasArts adventures, I was looking forward to playing Thimbleweed Park. I played the game in Hard mode.

The game succeeds reasonably well at imitating the classic LucasArts games. However, I was not completely happy with it. The pixel-graphics were really nice, but the humor was hit-and-miss. There was too much fourth-wall breaking and self-referential humor, including the whole plot of the game being one big self-referential storyline. Not all characters were equally interesting. The puzzles varied between too easy and too hard, and some of them were just annoying (in particular the trivia questions and the final puzzle of the game for which you have to dig up the original kickstarter video for the game to be able to solve it).

The game has nine chapters. The first three of these were excellent -- the humor was spot-on, the puzzles were doable with a bit of thinking, and the plot was nice. Chapter four started in a strong way, but pretty soon I found it became rather annoying. You control five characters at that time, who carry dozens and dozens of items (many of which are just red herrings), and several puzzles require rather illogical combinations of items. A shared inventory for the characters would definitely have helped, as now you are constantly moving characters near each other to exchange some items which you want to try combining. It might be a good idea to dump all items into one character, but not all items can leave the character which finds them, and not all characters can enter all places. I used hints to solve several of the puzzles in this chapter, and after that I put the game away for a while because I evidently was getting tired of it.

When I got back to the game, it became reasonably doable again, mostly because it started to focus on one particular character. In Chapter 8 I needed some hints again, mainly to find out where you have to search for certain items. To give an example, if you put this game down for a while and do not remember that in a particular room in a particular house you saw something in Chapter 3 which might be a place where something is hidden that you only can get in Chapter 8, you are just walking around without any idea of what you have to do. The later LucasArts adventures usually made sure that you could get plenty of hints at the times where you are dealing with puzzles so that you are guided to the right places even if you do not remember everything that happened before; they also automatically removed all inventory items which you would not need anymore, which is a big help. Thimbleweed Park is more like the earlier LucasArts games such as Monkey Island 2, which use opaqueness and illogical use of items to be challenging.

Overall, I enjoyed the game reasonably well, but it might have been better to play it in Casual Mode rather than Hard Mode. I don't know if Casual Mode removes the most illogical puzzles -- I did read that it removes some storylines (of which I saw some examples which I thought were not associated with difficult puzzles in particular), which might not be a great choice.

I cautiously recommend the game to those who nostalgic for the original LucasArts games, but it is not the great success that it could have been.

(100% Completion Review)

To be honest I'm pretty torn on this review. The game and puzzle structure, particularly in the first two thirds of the game or so, is outstanding. All pretty logical without being simple, with an excellent atmosphere to get in to. It feels very tight, and there's some great little additions and mechanics. It's really a classic adventure game brought in to modern times.

But...

- The game sets up a great sense of a somewhat grounded, murder mystery tale to be uncovered. But that tone is quite quickly undercut, and eventually totally abandoned and by the end of the game it's just farcical.

- The writing mostly fell flat for me. The story get phoned in and has very little, to no sense or payoff. The comedy is underwhelming, there's very little wit or edge to any of the humour. It feels very safe and sanitised, overly self-aware, self referential, constantly fourth wall breaking, cheap attempts at humour, with very few actual jokes verbal or otherwise. Monkey Island or Grim Fandango this ain't.
Kind of pathetically ironic though how the game rips on Sierra titles throughout, and then
ends up pulling a Leisure Suit Larry 3 and Space Quest 3 ending.
Oh, and there's quite a bit of ludo-narrative dissonance between the characters and puzzle solutions later on, which is off putting as the first half of the game was so tight.

- The characters are okay as they are to begin with, though some are very annoying, but there's no development or growth for any of them really. They're all very shallow or just opaque. The voice acting, the delivery, choice of voice actors are often really off and jarring. This was probably what put me off the most, and partly responsible for the poor comedy.

- The art is quite nice, but not great for a modern pixel game, at least not for me anyway as there are no resolution settings. So I either had to play it all blown out on my 4k monitor or squint at a minuscule window.

- The audio is pretty poor overall. Sound effects are fine, but the music is really quite lame. A few good tracks that fit and are good to listen to, but many others sound amateur, contrived and tonally odd for the setting and situations they accompany.
Also the voicelines are totally dry, no colour or reverb was added depending on the space the characters are in. It always just sounds like the voice actors are doing ASMR, talking inches from your ears, and with the vocals qualities of some of their voices it can be quite unpleasant.

- The puzzle structure/progress breaks down quite a bit toward the end and arbitrary roadblocks start occurring.

- The achievements were a bit of a let down. Two are kind of bullshit grindy achievements, but that's no big deal. More just that there really weren't many for really exploring and digging in to the conversations and so on. Mostly just gameplay checkpoint related.

On balance I recommend it. I enjoyed my time with the game for the most part, as I think any adventure game veteran will. Most of my complaints are easily over looked for the quality of the puzzles and so on. It's just such a shame to me that not as much care was taken with the more artistic elements. Just a little more refinement and it could have been up there with the legendary classics.

Man was this a great expirience.

My first adventure game was Police Quest and the first I bought was Zak McKracken. After Zak I played each Lucasfilm Adventure up until Sam and Max, loved everyone of them but my favourite always was Zak.

This here is like the third game Lucasfilm Games made was never released up until now, though some quality of live improvements that made their way into the games were added.

It feels like it's 1989 again and I'm sitting at my fathers 8086 and I am playing a fantastic adventure.

This is both, great for your first point and click ever and great if you played a ton of them before.

First three quarters of the game or so are a really solid classic adventure game albeit with a little too much indulgence in bad jokes about how wonderful adventure games are. The ending then torpedoes the entire thing by throwing the plot and characters in the trash to focus on a terrible meta storyline that pretty much comes out of nowhere. The game does not reward you becoming invested in its world and characters, quite the opposite, it goes out of its way to destroy everything it built up. None of the plot threads from the early game ever get resolved, none of the characters get satisfying conclusions, and there is no chance of a sequel ever revisiting this world or these characters, so don't bother. It's not worth playing, play Dropsy, DOTT, Sam and Max, Obduction, Syberia, or any one of the dozens of other adventure games out there that actually care about their characters and stories.

I wanted to like this game. I really did. It pisses me off.

The art is beautiful - the backgrounds, the characters, all of it. The music is amazing. I love it. The story and plot have a lot of promise - Twin Peaks style intrigue, shifting between characters, it's got some amazing writing and story. The voice-acting is good. The voice actors did an amazing job with the script they were given. Which leads me to my gripe.

It's all ruined by the god-awful, fourth-wall breaking dialogue. Maybe I'm wrong; maybe I wanted to believe I was being sold a game that took itself seriously. The script is terrible. The sheriff and his counterpart are infuriating. The dialogue is tongue-in-cheek, ridiculous and inane. It reads as though the characters know that they're in a video game and not real life, and to them, this fact is amusing. It shatters the immersion. I want to be spooked out around these creepy weirdos in this strange town. Instead I'm insulted by inane quirkiness that loses sight of what the setting and plot promised me.

This dialogue and script is for an audience that exists: If you have played dozens of adventure games and want something tongue-in-cheek, fourth-wall breaking, and all that comes with it, then this game is for you. It just wasn't for me.

I couldn't do it. I couldn't keep playing. I'm sorry to the amazing artists, musicians, and voice actors who contributed their hard work and talent to this. I wanted to like the product you poured your heart and soul into. I just couldn't.

For those who are fans of classic LucasArts Adventure games, this is a must-buy. Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick are the minds behind the revolutionary LucasAsrts Point-and-Click Adventure games Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge; as such, this game is not only well crafted, but also contains numerous in-jokes and references bound to enjoy any LucasArts fan. The puzzles are well thought out, the pixel art is beautiful, and the voice work is excellent.

I highly recommend this game to any veteran or newcomer to Point-and-Click Adventure games; this is a great game to get introduced to the genre, though I'm tempted to recommend playing other LucasArts games to truly appreciate the effort put into this modern masterpiece.

I only recommend this game for point & click fans, and mostly for those who have played older titles from the 80s and 90s, because above all this is a meta-game about raving and even deconstructing this specific genre. If you're looking for a self-contained story, a proper deep insight into deep thoughts or a mystery to solve, look elsewhere.

The art direction and visuals are really darn good. So is the music and most of the voice acting (even when it isn't good, it still is rather charming). The characters are a mostly one-note, but I suppose that's why you get a handful of them. Shockingy, Ransome is the character that really managed to held the story for me, and I'm not sure if that's intentional or if I'm just a fucking prick.

So how are the puzzles? Well, this game is weird, because it gives us two game modes: casual and hard. Generally speaking the puzzles do make sense, but depending on the game mode they can be rather obtuse (either way), and thankfully the game includes an in-game hint giver, accessible during most of the game.

Casual tends to oversimplify the puzzles to the point where you miss a lot of the game, and they feel weird because they're obviously cut-down and rushed (this includes potentially collecting a bunch of items that are unused in your progression). On the other hand, Hard overcomplicates half the puzzles, for example, when you need to copy the map in the news office: in casual you just get the journalist out and copy the damn thing in the photocopier, but not in hard. No, no, hold on-a-reno you need a fucking dime-a-who. This might be a really fancy reference I'm not getting, but give me a break. I think a single mode properly polished in-between both of them would have really been the nail on the proverbial head.

Comedy on the other hand, gives little breaks throughout, and you know what? Most of the jokes do land, they're not laugh out loud material, but rather charming chuckle stuff.

A loveletter to point and click adventure games, Thimbleweed Park at every point serves to remind me that the days of LucasArts are dead. A story about an heiress to a fortune, a murder, and a redemption plot are served up in the first act, and then quickly devolve into self-indulgent meta commentary through the story. Thimbleweed Park has nothing to say, and it does so aggressively. I'm sad to see this game so highly recommended when there are so many better ones out there.

I am a huge fan of the old Lucasfilm games. Starting with Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken on to Monkey Island, which i bought back then for quite ridiculous sums of money, but i loved them.
This one i could not stand for more than an hour. The Voice Acting is AWFUL. The Chars, so far (i did not get very far) are completely boring and flat. Sorry, this is not a good game.

I don't think I have ever bothered to review a game on Steam.

If you grew up playing or have love for Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Loom, The Dig, The Monkey Island games, Full Throttle, any Sierra Entertainment adventure game, any LucasArts adventure games then you are required by law to own this game.

How is it with a high end gaming PC, geared for what's to come, this is the most enjoyable game experience I've experienced in years? Simple... Creativity, with an extreme amount of charm and nostalgia. Is that really a simple feat at all? NO! All developers should take take note from this marvel... This is a must play. Just soak in every moment. From voice acting to humor and personality, this is untouched in the current gaming climate. Make the world a better place, PLAY AND FINISH THIS GAME!

Thimbleweed Park, which I would describe as a goofy mashup between the X files and Twin Peaks, is a nostalgic but very welcome return to form by Ron Gilbert.

Gamers of a certain age, who may have been warped for life in their tender years by classics like The Secret of Monkey Island, are sure to enjoy navigating a brand new SCUMM style adventure, while younger gamers and other newcomers, though unfamiliar to the less streamlined interface than those offered by more modern adventures, will appreciate a script shot through with Gilbert's signature fourth wall-breaking sense of humour.

Those caught up in the modern appreciation for 80s style settings and aesthetics will enjoy Thimbleweed Park's retro homage to Gilbert's 80s era adventures such as Zach McCracken and Maniac Mansion without the visual limitations of EGA, VGA, and 8-bit tech. The environments and colour look great, while the sound design and music are similarly well-done, being evocative and effective at setting the mood without being intrusive.

Offering different difficulty settings for the more casual player (who disagree that honey and cat hair make a workable moustache), and the more advanced player (who enjoys losing precious hours of life to the perverse sadism of adventure game designers) The game has some replayability and definite potential for creating/streaming enjoyable Let's Play style videos.

If you love unique indie games, with funny characters and a well written story, then Thimbleweed Park is the place for you! Between the mushroom taking witch cursing the cursing clown and the mayor and corner being the same (but different?) people, this town and it's antics are absolutely delightful. Even though I only have 3 hours on steam I also own it on PS4 and mostly just bought it on steam to support the developers :) 12/10 recommend

An excellent game!

Admittedly it's a little cringeworthy at parts, specifically where it tries to be a little quirky like with the clown guy. It's not too funny like I think it tries to be, but it's very charming and a great puzzle game. The art is excellent and the voice acting is great, although its easy to tell if a voice actor voiced another character.

Overall, definitely buy this game if you like puzzle games and/or point and clicks!

Awesome game, really took me back to the classics like the Monkey Islands games, Indiana Jones or Day of the Tentacle. Some of the combinations are a little out there but most make sense if you pick up on the hints. I admit, I once needed a hint because I had missed an object that was really tiny, but other than that not too much frustration and a lot of elation when a combination finally worked. Definitely worth it!

If you've ever played Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, Fate of Atlantis or any classic adventure game... this is a MUST buy. It was created by the developers of those titles and is the best Adventure Game / Point-and-Click of the last 20 years. And to top it off... it is funny as hell.

P.S. - The 99 cent DLC is the best buck I've ever spent online.

Thimbleweed Park is a brand new point and click adventure from the minds who created Maniac Mansion including Ron Gilbert, Gary Winnick, and David Fox.

Thimbleweed Park starts with a simple tutorial which shows a mysterious murder, from there the player takes control of two characters, Agent Ray and Reyes. The two characters feel based on X-Files’ Scully and Mulder, and it’s hardly the only reference in the game.

Thimbleweed Park is based on the feeling of both X-files and Twin Peaks as our characters all explore a large and strange town. The writing though elevates what could be a simple point and click adventure into a wonderful journey through the looking glass.

The writing is what kept me coming back as there’s a lot of humor and clever puzzles that feel more like situational occurrences instead of “here’s a video game puzzle”. For instance, a character needs to send an application to a video game company and the process has her needing to get stamps as well as get a book on the programming language of that company.

Much of the game is reminiscent of classic Lucasarts titles in both the style and execution of the writing and humor. But that’s also a shortcoming of Thimbleweed Park. Thimbleweed Park isn’t created as a new entry point for point and click adventures, but rather a game made for fans of classic point and click adventure games. It’s for the person who grew up with Maniac Mansion or Monkey’s Island more than for someone wondering what the genre is about.

The difference is Thimbleweed Park will break the fourth wall and refer to classic games such as Maniac Mansion, Monkey’s Island, and old Sierra games. There’s an early scene with two characters known as the pigeon brothers, where they just shatter the fourth wall to talk about classic Sierra games, as well as inform the players that there are no dead ends in the game unlike those old Sierra games, a change that was made around the time of Monkey’s Island.

Some people are going to get annoyed by that interaction and others will laugh and enjoy the moment. However, there are a good amount of those fourth-wall breaking interactions that may hinder the enjoyment of new players.

After criticism about this, the developers have added the ability to take out “Annoying In-Jokes” post-launch, and have left the default to be “No annoying in-jokes.” But this leaves the game in a weird state where about half of the in-jokes remain as they couldn’t be removed. I think players should enable that option before starting the game.

However, the experience here is still intended to entertain fans of the genre. The art and animation are fantastic, and the characters in the game are interesting. There are five major characters, with the two agents being separate characters, allowing them to handle different parts of the game as necessary. There’s also an insult clown that swears at people, Delores, a hopeful video game programmer at MMucasFlem (wonder what’s referring too), and a ghostly apparition who has some very unique abilities.

Fans will likely have a good time with the puzzles included in Thimbleweed Park. There are only a couple specific points of pixel hunting in the game, and moon logic is kept to a minimum if any at all.

The premise of the puzzles can be outlandish, such as Ransom the Clown losing a page for his insult book, or needing to collect a bucket of popcorn for his hamster (which he keeps in the microwave… *wink wink*) but the solutions all will make sense once the player figures them out.

If a player gets stumped the game has an in-game helpline that they can use without penalty, as well as two difficulty options so fans of the stories of point and click Adventures who don't enjoy the puzzles or gameplay can have a sanitized experience. The hint line is very useful, having multiple hints per puzzle.

I rarely had to use the hint line as the puzzles are well designed and interesting with many of them having clever solutions and only a few requiring multiple characters to solve them.

Though that does bring me to one of two complaints I have with the game. This one being many characters say the same thing. While every character is unique and has a purpose here, if three of the characters go to a very tall ladder, they each say the same version of “I won’t climb that”. It’s a shame because each character is a unique and interesting person, but oftentimes you hear the same response for the same action and it would have been so much fresher to see a different comment from each character, perhaps causing the player to try the same failed action with each character.

It’s just one of those things that the writer of a large ensemble cast of playable characters could have done to make the game feel more interesting. Granted it may have minimal value to the player but to see the same lines of dialogue for so many pieces of the game, especially when it’s expected that the player will see them multiple times, such as eating a gross hotdog with each of the four characters is a weak experience.

There’s one last issue with Thimbleweed Park, and it’s a big spoiler. I’ll try to say it like this. There are several mysteries in Thimbleweed Park and some of them are left open or unexplored, and then hand washed away by the ending. Without saying what that ending is, I will say that it’s a good ending but the game is not left in a state that those stories will likely continue. It's almost as if the ending was intended to make players ignore these issues, but it does the opposite.

It feels like the game has a few purposefully weak points, and is left unexplained. Some of these are in-jokes from another game, such as a clone of a playable character is shown for no reason other than Maniac Mansion did something similar, but others of these just feel like they’re put in the game to be red herrings.

The ending of the game is satisfying but on reflection, the game itself was a little weak and left too much open. I wouldn’t have minded a more streamlined experience or some level of explanation prepared for players.

For what Thimbleweed Park is, I enjoyed the experience. It feels tailor-made for me, as a fan of both classic Sierra games and classic Lucasarts games, but at the same time, I also have to admit Thimbleweed Park could have been better.

I highly recommend this game for any fan of classic point and click adventure games, but yet when I look at an actual review score. I’m forced to give Thimbleweed Park a very arbitrary

7/10

Yet for me, I could even see bumping that by two points if you look at this style of game very fondly and know the previous work of the creators.

If you have enjoyed Thimbleweed park previously, you should check out Delores: A Thimbleweed Park Mini-Adventure which is a free followup to the game. It’s more intended to be a demo of a new game engine but is an enjoyable look at the world after the game. I caution players, as there are a lot of spoilers in Delores, so it is worth checking that out only after finishing the main game.

As an X-Files and Twin Peaks fanatic who loves point-and-click puzzle games, this looked tailor-made for me. I had a lot of fun playing it, and the story was super engaging... until I got to the final chapter. What attempts to be a meta-commentary on game design (I assume) is so flimsy in execution that it plays out more like the developers just didn't have time to finish the game so they cobbled together a non-ending that wraps everything up in one fell swoop without solving anything. The experience of playing this game is akin to reading a great mystery novel, only to reach the grand reveal and have the detective point at you, the reader, with no real explanation other than it was ~unexpected~.

If you're the type of person who cares more about the journey than the destination, then this is a great game. If you care about plot but still love clever gameplay, then you can quit right before the finale and pretend the game crashed and it's gone forever. But if you want a satisfying conclusion to an admittedly otherwise engaging game, then don't waste your money. Or time, for that matter, if you got the game for free. It's not worth it.

Firstly, I know nothing of the crowdfunding efforts behind this game. I played this game solely based off how much I enjoyed the Thimbleweed mini-adventure. I really enjoyed the look of the game, the tasks and having to figure things out. The characters are amusing and the story itself was written well. But the ending ... was disappointing. What the creators were after with the 3rd wall breaking -esq or meta on computer games just fell flat. I did play all the way to the end hoping for something more but as the credits at the end rolled I remember thinking I just wasted how much of my life on this game? Harsh, I know, but I found zero enjoyment from completing this game. As I mentioned above, apparently there was some sort of crowdfunding behind this game, of which I only know about because the game actually tells you to go to their crowdfunding site to find out how to use an item. Once again, I have no idea what was in the creator's heads for this but by that time in the game it had become for predicable I didn't have to go to another website to figure it out. I certainly will not be replaying this game and the completionist in me is quite okay with not getting all the achievements. While playing the game I had told several people about it and how much I liked it but by the end I was telling them not to bother with it. So in summary:
1. Will I be replaying this game? No
2. Would I recommend this game to others? No

Disclaimer, I grew up with all the LucasArts Adventures and so my review will be biased by my fond memories.

The game is the closest a game has gotten to the Golden Era of Adventure games. The game does hit the sweet spot between eerie and silly that makes it click. Great scenes, funny characters and many references to other beloved games.

The puzzles are generally great. Some are a bit illogical though and it can be annoying that solving a puzzle activates a completely unrelated event somewhere else in the world. Because the world is large and you can teleport, you don't notice these changes and have to backtrack every nook and cranny. Sometimes with more than one character.

While everything leading up to the finale was great, the ending itself felt a bit unsatisfying and too meta,
Still, if you like the classic adventures, you will like this one as well.

I want a Ransome The Clown game. Not a DLC, a game.

But seriously, the game is quite long due to the management and puzzle solving of 4 characters. It can be quick once I got the maps and divided for them. But it takes a while to solve and progress through the game. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and the dialogs are funny as they can be. The creators owe nothing to LucasArts, they are in their own land now.

Graphics look great, even in 1080p, I thought it would look awkward since pixel graphics don't have great resolution in that setting. But it looks perfect.

Sounds and soundtrack are well composed, very rich in details and soothing through the whole game. The voice acting is fantastic, I loved each character.

Buy it if you like adventure point and click games.

THE SIGNALS ARE STRONG!

This is a visual novel, point-and-click, pixel adventure game with a fully voiced cast and a lot of hilarious breaking forth wall moments and absolute deranged characters. If you like the sentence you've just read, give it a try.

I started out playing the hard mode--gamer's pride and all. So far, I have not yet found a puzzle I couldn't solve. The pacing of the story is fine. The controls, however, can be a tad annoying, depending on who you ask. Personally, I find the controls a bit on the redundant side. If you click on an object, you won't get to interact with it (unless it's NPCs). So you must use grammar logic to figure out what to click first to make the interaction work. Overall, I enjoyed the game.

Monkey Island defined my teen years, I have many memories associated with the game. When over 10 years ago its creator Ron Gilbert had a dinner with fans, I managed to sneak in. I was too shy to go and talk with him, but I still immortalized the moment with pictures and a blog post. I've been following his career closely, sometimes disappointed by his games (The Cave probably?), sometimes thrilled (DeathSpank was an underrated gem), I even finished his match-3 game back in the day, in a time when I was really, really bored with match-3 games.
Thimbleweed didn't particularly excite me because I've never been too much of a Maniac Mansion fan (although I did enjoy DOTT a lot), but it was much better than I anticipated.

The good :

- This starts as a mix between Monkey Island and Twin Peaks in terms of mood.
- Story-wise it's trying to be thought-provoking... The first few hours were very exciting. Then after the arrest, it was a bit harder for me to keep up.
- Some of the character arcs are very intriguing...
- Dolores is a winner. I love the character. She's obviously an extension of the developers' psyche, and by extension of most of the nostalgic players, and boy do we need more geekettes in our video games. Dolores is not only a good character, she's also devoid of most clichés and isn't seen as an object. I also need to praise the Ransome character. He's more interesting that he looks (and sounds).
- It may very well be the quintessential 2D old-school game in terms of visual effects and minor details that make it feel like a modern game.
- It has a Ron Gilbert cameo, dammit!

The bad stuff:

- Some of the UI is problematic. It's really minor, though, but the team could have use a little more QA testing.
- A few bugs, too. For instance, the Ransome DLC setting is reset every time you relaunch the game. Maybe it was intentional, but it made me miss out on some curses. Rats! Sorry, I mean *bleep*!
- Not a big fan of the jazzy soundtrack. A few songs stand out from the rest, but overall I've heard better. Music is very important to me and oddly, Ron Gilbert games are among the rare ones that get a pass from me. (The better Monkey Island soundtracks are in episodes that he wasn't involved with, sadly.)

- The story, well... It doesn't really go anywhere. The clues are put in it too soon (basically when you're done with the Dolores flashback, I believe you can get a certain journal with them), the murder story isn't really solved (I know what a MacGuffin is, but did we really have to go through this in the prologue when in the end it goes nowhere..? Did they just forget to address it?), and the character arc conclusions are a bit rushed. They had time to record thousands of extra funny lines nobody would probably read entirely, so why not a few more lines from each character? Or is it voluntary? They wanted us to come up with our own conclusions for Ransome and Ray, maybe? But the lack of a Reyes follow-up isn't really indicative of anything, as his story was the most straightforward and not really opened to discussions.

- And boy does Ron like twist endings, but in this case I saw it coming from miles away... It's a trope that's not only a bit of a let-down, but it's been done to death in one form or another. Basically, you can find it in *three* celebrated sci-fi shows that all came to an end in early 2020... As such it didn't really surprise me, so the ending wasn't exactly great for me. I did like the visit through the wireframe world though; as an ex-game developer, I found this to be delightful, although a bit empty.

The ugly:
- Well, I wouldn't call it ugly... Or beautiful... It's not the graphics we wanted, but it's the graphics we needed.

The Morricone:
- I think the authors put so much into this game that it shows everywhere, and despite my reservations about the story, I was here for the funny dialogues, and boy did I get served.

So, when do we get a new Dolores game..? I mean, one that doesn't require Windows 10 to be run? We're getting one, aren't we...? Pretty please?

Even though I fit the description of the Casual Mode (I don't want to spend too many hours playing an adventure game and getting stuck) I'm glad I chose Classic Mode, even though I used the hint system a lot. The puzzles are all very good! There are always many parallel puzzles going on, so you constantly find something that makes you progress in a puzzle.

Yes, it has its faults and it's no Monkey Island or Fate of Atlantis, nonetheless, it is about on par with Maniac Mansion which is the game it's probably most heavily trying to stay in line with (as it was intentional). I don't know that I'd rank it above Day of the Tentacle but it's definitely a worthwhile game to go through. I'm actually hoping they do more of these as they're in short supply. Overall recommended.

YES. 90's references and humor, exquisite pixelated graphics, all dialogue has voice, 4th wall breaking, etc. etc.
There should be more games like this, but for now, this is the closest to a good 90's LucasArts adventure game.

Honestly, overall it's a good one.

It just looses its' shit towards the end.

I want to review it, but really the last 2 'paragraphs' truly cover what I am saying.

The journey is more important than the destination.

While this is certainly not the masterpiece of the Monkey Island or Sam & Max scale, Thimbleweed park quite expertly manages to create the proper 'old adventure game' experience, while mixing it with a TwinPeaksesque vibe. You want good ole' adventure game in a style of Day of the Tentacle or Monkey Island? You wan't weird detective in a moody town? Nice writing, nice dialogs, nice jokes and logical, yet sometimes tricky puzzles sound good? Well, you've come to the right pixeltown.

I thought I would like Thimbleweed so I thought it would be a fun modern throwback game. However, I find myself getting easily bored; I don't like most of the characters. Other players might enjoy it but I just can't get into it. Some point I'll clear it but feels like a tedious slog. Yes, I understand these point and click games and how they work but this one just didn't mesh with me.

A beautiful, thoughtful work of art! Many have tried to resurrect the charming gameplay of the 90's but few have come close...THIS game, however, is just wonderful and I feel like I have unearthed a (again, beautiful) long-lost game from the golden age of adventure games! HIGHLY recommend! Please make more games!!

I like meta humor as much as the next person, but even I found this a bit much. The story falls off the rails because of said meta narrative and left me grimacing. So, if you're looking for good plot going into this... well, try and enjoy it with a pinch of salt. Just know that it never gets as deep or interesting as you'd like.

Otherwise, the art is gorgeous. It's a really beautiful looking game and the game play aspects flows really well. Switching between multiple playable characters is very easy and hassle free. The puzzles are a bit hit and miss. Sometimes easy, sometimes not... A little more consistency would've been nice, but eh, that's just how point-and-click adventures work.

I wasn't all that thrilled about the characters either, honestly. I thought I'd like Delores at the very least, but even she just started getting more annoying than endearing toward the end. Which, I honestly think stems back to the meta plot/jokes I referred to in the beginning. She was especially egregious to the point of obnoxiousness, though fans of those old LucasArts games may disagree. *doubt*

Hmm, I'm going to give this a thumbs down because in the end I really did feel l'd wasted more time playing than I'd have liked. I mean, absolutely get it if you want to enjoy gorgeous visuals and pixel art, but when I'm expecting a meatier story I can sink my teeth into and end up with a lot of puffed air... I'm just going to end up disappointed.

Great game tarnished by a Seinfeldian style ending that diminishes the game’s entire plot. That said, if you enjoy classic point and clicks Thimbleweed Park is definitely recommended.

A true successor to Maniac Mansion with modern execution while preserving the original pixel art experience. Great graphics, sound, music and voice acting. Using the familiar but more polished LucasArts adventure game interface. I wish more games of this style get made.

Thimbleweed Park is an adventure point and click game with the old-style of from the 80's. In fact, the story takes place in the 80's when two detectives uncover a dead body in the small town of Thimbleweed Park. They meet the town's people only to discover something fishy is going on with the former Pillow factory.

This game is really fun and the characters are easy to get into. You play as multiple characters and have the option to choose between casual mode or more difficulty. I love having both options as sometimes I'd like to just play the game for the storyline rather than racking my brain in trying every clue. The storyline remained mysterious until the end chapters. I would recommend this game! The only thing that was annoying during the entire game was having to select open on every door. I wish there was some way around that.

This is wild! Absolutely worth every speck of dust! I enjoyed this very much, and I can recommend this to everyone who enjoyed the good old LucasArts Adventures back in the day. It has the same GOOD humor as ManicMansion/DayOfTheTentacle, and it has many great late-80s pop-culture reference jokes. I will allways remember this journey. Thank you!

There will be spoilers after a certain point. Before then I'll be as vague as possible when it comes to plot stuff.

Is Thimbleweed Park an enjoyable and well made game? Yes, mostly. Graphics are stylish, voice acting is good, and so is the writing. The first third is great, the second third wavers a bit and the last third is downright insulting.

It reeks of a passion project that started out strong, people poured their hearts into it, loved it and what they were doing. But slowly as you make your way through it you get the feeling that they've grown somewhat bored with it, and you begin to suspect they may even resent it to some degree.

And here come the spoilers:

The ending. Urgh. You can sort of feel where it's going in the last third. In the beginning you're interested in the characters, you're wondering how all the weird things fit together with the hints and winks and odd things people have said and done so far. How does it all fit together? Why was the guy murdered? It’s interesting, it gets you thinking and it’s good.

I’m a bit late to the party playing this and it gives me the opportunity to compare it to the final season of game of thrones. In that not only was it bad, of much much lower quality than what was previously produced. BUT and this is the worst crime, it devalues all the good that came before it.

Thimbleweed park does much the same, and in a way that’s almost insulting to the player, it downright mocks you for caring about the plot of the beginning of the game.

And what’s the big mystery? Well, it has nothing to do with the main mystery, it has nothing to do with the main characters and their motivations for doing what they’re doing. And the two starting characters are set up as suspicious mysterious FBI agents sent to investigate a murder. But they’re not quite right, stuff doesn’t add up, their stories aren’t quite right, nor are the things they do compared to why they claim they’re actually there. Interesting right? Yeah, I think so too.

Well never mind all that, you as a player were silly for caring about that, because the big reveal is that it’s all a video game. Yup, that old trope, fine it’s been done before, game might do it well. Que 20 minutes of exposition at the end explaining that all the stuff you’re doing is just game mechanics and you just need to solve your character plot to proceed. All the characters are given an item that magically resolves their plot. But it doesn’t matter, because it’s a video game and it’ll reset anyway. Those strange men in town that all looked the same and seemed to be impeding your investigation? Well it saved on art and voice actors to have them be the same(yes really).

And while this would be humorous in any other context. Having spent 14 hours previously going through what I thought was a cool mystery and being invested in the characters and the plot, only to be told I was silly for caring and it doesn’t matter. Well it’s insulting.

Would I want to replay the beginning good part again, since it is after all good.

No, the ending has left a sour taste in my mouth and I can’t help have it rub off on what I previously enjoyed.

The ending is also very budget, it has you go through some of the early concept art of the areas in the game as the “game” is about to be reset plot-wise. It looks like maniac mansion which is a cool little callback, but it goes on for way too long and is completely silent. Which is a bit jarring considering the game had previously been downright gorgeous and had amazing sound. Especially for something as important for a story as the ending.

Which also leads me to believe they ran out of money or time to finish it properly. If it was only that I’d be a bit less insulted, but the whole tongue in cheek laughing at the player for caring kinda makes it feel a bit more malicious than just that.

This may sound like an angry rant, it may even be that. But what can I say? It got me, it made me care and enjoy it, and then it punished me for it.

You can only recommend or not recommend here on steam. It’s a bit more nuanced than that.
I’ll say this:

The more you enjoy this kind of game, the more likely it is to make you hate it in the end.

If you don’t really care and just enjoy mucking around in an adventure game world without any real investment, you may get some enjoyment from it.
