Timespinner ist das vermutlich beste Metroidvania 2018! Tolle Story, sehr gute Spielbarkeit, großartige Pixel-Art-Grafik und ein phänomenaler Soundtrack - und aus jeder Pore atmet das große Vorbild Symphony of the Night! Eine großartige Reise erwartet den Spieler!

Summary
------------------
Pixel drawing (like on retro consoles: sega, or dendy), the plot is interesting with a few twists along the way (not complicated, all that is required from you is to read carefully).
I am fully satisfied with this game.
-----------------
More details
-----------------
Among the good things:
+ a few endings
+ soundtrack for each different area of the map
+ control is pretty simple to understand
+ you will have a connection with a group of NPCs, each of them can give you a quest line
+ there is a journal in this game, where you are able to learn more about characters/monsters as well as the plot and world itself
Cons:
- sometimes you need to figure out how to complete the quest yourself (i mean, where to get what is needed, no details given)
- it's not so rare for Metroidvania games but the game lacks custom saving (only auto when you get to a certain room) as well as an option for multiple savings slots
- you can't rewatch or listen to dialogs and scenes with NPC which occurred previously
-------------
Conclusion
-------------
From my personal experience, this game is one of the best in its genre. Timespinner helped me to remember why I liked Metroidvania games so much and revived my desire to try some of them once again.

If you enjoy Randos or want to check out Archipelgo's multiworld with this game, then go for it, but just skip all the story crap while you're learning. If you want a metroidvania with a GOOD time mechanic, go play Touhou: Luna Nights. I could say a lot more about how underbaked this game is and how awful the writing is, but it's already been said.

Overall, I was underwhelmed.

- Enemy designs sometimes look goofy (bird head with a spring?)
- World Map is sometimes tedious (empty room with a chest that just contains a generic consumable)
- Orbs seem underdeveloped (no elemental based puzzles or challenges despite so many elemental orbs)
- Time Travel gimmick doesn't have much (mostly just to open the door to the final boss)
- Time Stop mechanic is just for platforming on enemies or dodging attacks (no specific puzzles or interactions)
- Introduces demons as potential third force, but they're never seen again after beating them once.
- Game talks talks about moral ambiguity of war, but final boss is just a generic evil guy that kills people who disagree with him.

This feels like a game that had a lot of ideas that never really went anywhere - leaving everything feel half-finished.

I'd say skip it.

Timespinners é bom. A trilha sonora é impecável, o visual é lindo e a gameplay é boa.

Well-made but generally unexciting SOTN-style metroidvania that's over soon and won't keep you lingering for long after finishing it.

Bonus points for native Linux port.

I really enjoyed the gameplay of this game, but I'm gonna be honest, I was not a fan of the result of completing all of the sidequests. I didn't really consent to having to watch the characters talk so frankly about their sex lives around the campfire, and it really has nothing to do with the rest of the game's plot and feels... Weird, tacked on, invasive? I don't know how to describe it, but I don't like it. It makes me feel kinda gross.

I wanna make clear: I'm that kind of self-appointed gigachad that plays NSFW games on his main account. I'm fine with sex being in games in general. But I prefer it when it's something I sign up for, not something jarringly shoved into the narrative for whatever reasons the creator had for doing so.

I still recommend it, but with an asterisk -- if you're not into that kind of thing, don't complete all the NPC sidequest content. Just enjoy it for what it is, an excellent Metroidvania with a very fun and inventive variety of skills and abilities, a decent story, and a really great time period swapping mechanic that isn't quite as good as The Messenger but gets the job done. That's worth at least ten bucks on a sale, and 5-10 hours of your time.

This is a decent Metroidvania, but it ultimately feels underdeveloped to me. You collect several orbs throughout the game which change your combat style, but there isn't a compelling reason to change out your orbs or experiment with different combinations. You gain a lot of money while moving around the map, but there is hardly anything to spend it on. You have the ability to freeze time, but this ability feels more like an afterthought than a central part of the game. There are a few instances where you need to freeze time in order to jump on an enemy to access a higher platform, but I would almost forget about the freezing time ability because it was unnecessary to use most of the time.

If you love Metroidvanias, this game might be worth picking up on a sale, but there's a lot of other games in the genre that do it better.

Apart from what has been said about the story/writing, it's a fantastic metroidvania. Great visuals, great OST, decent lenght and amount of content. If you are more on the 'vania' side of the spectrum, this game is a must.

Solid metroidvania game, fun mechanics and combat. Lot of combat options but lot of the weapons aren't that good in the end compared to later ones though that didn't stop me from spamming pieces of meteorites into everything!

Timespinner does everything very well it's set out to do. Recommended!

I’ve been on a metroidvania kick lately and this one seemed like a fun one to try. I was immediately taken in by the SNES feel of it all and it gave me the warm and fuzzies. It made me think of Castlevania and Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star and I loved it.

One of my favorite parts was the story. The political aspects of the plot were intriguing and I found myself really wanting to know the history of this world. As with a lot of good stories in games, it is almost entirely missable, so it’s important for the player to read all of those letters and downloads and memories to really know what’s going on. The characters were pretty great, as well, and I was looking forward to finishing their quests so I could learn more about them.

The problem is that this game not only nods to those previously mentioned games but also rips a lot of aspects of them and plops them into this game. During my playtime, I started to realize that this game is very “paint by numbers” with very little to distinguish itself from the rest of the crowd. Sure, the weapon system is pretty cool, but I very quickly found a combination of weapons that worked for me and I stuck with them for, like, 70% of the game. And, most egregiously, there are two (well, three, technically) different maps in this game… but, other than being visually distinct, they’re mostly identical in layout. I’m never a fan of that trope because, to me, it comes across as a ploy to pad out game time. I mean, at least turn the map upside-down or something.

In the end, I found myself pretty bored by this one. The nostalgia never fully faded but it lost its lustre quickly. If you’re just looking for another metroidvania to kill time with, there are worse games to pick than this one. But if you’re looking for something that shakes up the formula or just really excels at being a metroidvania, you’ll probably be better off looking elsewhere.

Incredibly average Metroidvania is incredibly average.

This is very much a Metroidvania which wears it's Castlevania influences on it's sleeve! More specifically Castlevania order of Ecclesia since some of the attacks you unlock are almost identical. I even joked when I saw a throne chair at one point that it was a dracula style throne and SURPRISE! It actually was where the last boss fight later took place on the first ending you'll get.

The art style has detailed but weird vibes to it, almost like some hybrid of Terraria and Stardew valley

It's an ok medium sized indie game, which I highly recommend you play in the harder modes for the best experience. The story is pretty forgettable, time travel stories can be hard to write and here is no exception where the solution to everything is basically a fairly dull Deus Ex Machina.

There's also some strange obsession over characters sexualities being mentioned when you try to 100% complete the game which is just... why? I'm not playing a dating sim or a game with even really a relationship system so it doesn't add any more weight to the story. I can see where the more harsh criticisms of the game can come in especially in that regard.

Respect to the sprite work on display, but there's just something about this game that just makes it all ultimately incredibly average.

Timespinner is very good. As someone who plays a lot of Metroidvanias, I can confirm that this is worth playing through. There's a lot of cool weapons and spells to use, and fancy progress abilities to find... however it IS all a bit... standard? While I had a great time with the game, I do have to say there isn't necessarily a lot to make it stand out from other games in the genre. But if you like these kinds of games then that isn't really a bad thing!

There's more that could've been done with the time travel mechanic; for the most part it just serves to double the size of the map. In fact, I got a bit stuck on an optional puzzle for a little while, as it was the one time I can recall where you had to use the two time periods to solve something. I definitely would've liked to see more interactivity between the worlds (although seeing the same areas in two VERY different styles is pretty cool).

I found the story to be pretty interesting as it went along, and there's a LOT of really detailed background lore that you can read (or not read, if it's not your style) that adds a lot to it too! There was however one major issue I had with the story: as you assist the various characters with their side quests you learn way more than you really need to about their sexualities and gender preferences... and it's really weird. There's several characters who are gay, some who are lesbian, another who's transgender, even the main character is revealed to be bisexual. I don't mean for any of that to come across as being insulting to anyone who identifies as any of those, but I take issue with the fact that it's in the game at all. I'm all for inclusiveness in games, that's totally awesome, but it feels EXTREMELY out of place and weird in this game about a woman fighting an evil empire across time to get revenge on them for murdering her family. Frankly, these characters being the way they are adds absolutely nothing to the story as a whole, and feels incredibly shoehorned-in so that the writers could tick the 'inclusiveness' box. The end result is an UTTERLY BIZARRE conversation between all the characters about their various sexual encounters (as a reward for completing all the sidequests?) and it's so WEIRD and unnecessary!

That aside though, the game is great. If you've ever enjoyed any of the GBA or DS Castlevanias, you'll have a good time with this as it takes a lot of inspiration from them! If you even remotely like Metroidvanias, give Timespinner a try.

This game is excellent. It is more Castlevania:SOTN than Bloodstained was (and feels better to play, less grindy and more fun). Similar to how Diablo 2 Resurrected looks like your memories of Diablo 2 rather than the reality of how it actually was, this game looks like my memories of Castlevania while actually being far more modern and clean.

Be aware that it feels like a game for kids, and has writing that sounds like a game for kids... until it randomly starts making really overt sexual innuendos, and even at the end of the game there's a protracted frank discussion of sex for no apparent reason. It feels completely out of place with the tone of the game in general.

But that (and the lack of boss health bars, but that matches its inspiration, as much as I hated it there too) is my only real complaint about a really awesome game. I plowed through this in one day, which is not at all my norm. I think I'm even going to do at least some of New Game+, which is crazy talk!

Most of the game is surprisingly good. It has excellent boss mechanics, good controls and an overall pleasant storyline which in my opinion is even superior to Metroid (quite the surprise). It feels like a late generation SNES game. No technical issues, no crashes. This game is very well coded.

There is some LGBTQA+ content which feels forced and makes character interactions less authentic, but this is not a big part of the game. There's also some crude unwarranted dialog which doesn't offend me but did take me by surprise.

The game could have massively benefited from being more expansive to allow you to flex your items fully. You won't have time to play with everything the game offers you unfortunately unless you grind.

Advise anyone playing this to immediately unlock Nightmare mode with the secret code (look it up online) and play that from the start to expand your entertainment dollars if you're like me and only play most stuff once. Don't cheat, don't look stuff online.

Grab this on sale around 10$. It's what it's worth.

The game is fun, very big Castlevania : Symphony of the Night vibes. Gameplay is tight and the storyline is good.
The orb weapon system is really cool, reminds me of dawn of sorrow. And I love the pixel art, really well made.

My only gripe is this was definitely written by a simp who loves their pc culture, some of the dialogue is seriously cringy and unbelievable. If you can look past that, you should have a lot of fun.

Game was serviceable, and the mechanics interesting if a little easy.
Problem is, the whole story turned out to be a woke cringe fest. Can't recommend it unless you enjoy getting lectured by overly naive people with a super-simplistic world view about how anything and everything wrong in the world is directly caused by straight men.

Backed this on Kickstarter on the basis that I really liked the composer's work

Pros:
+ Jeff Ball soundtrack is great & perfectly evokes Symphony of the Night's more downtempo moments
+ Nice enemy designs with detailed animations
+ Weapon system allows for some interesting combinations
+ Level design flows well

Cons:
- Weapons are not well balanced, and the weapon leveling system discourages experimentation
- No interesting power-ups - you get your standard double-jump, your standard dash, etc.
- Boss fights are way too easy, at least on the normal difficulty
- Time travelling plot is underutilized & really goes nowhere
- Hilariously, impossible-to-parody bad dialogue for the sidequests & characters
- Character portrait art is bad - everyone looks lobotomized (might explain the sidequests, now that I think about it)

I might have still been willing to give this a recommendation 6 years ago(assuming it came out then), but at this point my backlog is clogged with Metroidvanias and there are far more interesting entries than this to spend time with. It's not a good sign when a long-awaited Kickstarter project update consists of the developer talking about what lamps they used to fight their seasonal affective disorder.

6,5/10

Timespinner is a metroidvania that plays well but has some distinct weaknesses in its writing and difficulty management. It is still a good title overall, but I can only recommend it if you find it on sale (i.e. around 50%).

The Positives

-The character designs are diverse and visually clear, the creatures are very SNES-era (I mean that as a compliment) and the locations are distinct but also consistent when it comes to color and level of detail. There was a lot of good work done here and this is probably my favorite aspect of the game.

-The soundtrack is melodic, upbeat and catchy, exactly the kind of music a title like Timespinner needs.

-Controls are solid, more so than in other metroidvanias. Even though there are relatively few moves available, Lunais, the main and only playable character, responds properly to player commands.

-The combat is simple but enjoyable. Each enemy has unique attack patterns and weaknesses that you need to adjust to, sometimes monsters combine forces to make your life a bit harder. Furthermore, you can change equipment easily while you fight, which helps keep you immersed in the game. None of these elements is innovative, but they are all competently done.

-There is some minor back-tracking but the map is not big enough for exploration to become tedious.

-I am in love with how cute the familiars look.

The Negatives

-The LGBT tag was part of the reason I bought Timespinner. I am a trans woman who grew up with 90s games and I love metroidvanias. The thought of playing as a ass-kicking queer character with the ability to travel through time, who gets to meet other queer folks in a fantasy world filled with intrigue sounded like a dream project. Unfortunately my high expectations were left unsatisfied because Timespinner's dialogue lacks elegance and subtlety, opting instead to deliver its message of acceptance and diversity in the most ham-fisted and unimaginative way possible.

Probably the best example of this problem was when
Nileste, the game's alchemist, came out as trans to Lunais so that the latter could give her immediate validation. I cannot properly explain through words how frustrated I felt reading their dialogue. I found it a very shallow effort to manipulate the feelings of trans players who may be experiencing their own gender-related insecurities. Furthermore, it annoys me because I think it'd be relatively easy to do this the right way. Let me give you an alternative that took me five minutes to come up with; Nileste gives Lunais a side-quest to get some medicine for her. Lunais completes the quests and recognizes the medicine as feminization potions. Once she delivers them to Nileste she asks what these are for. Nileste decides to open up, she explains the kind of treatment she has experienced because of her identity and how it shaped her value system and the way she approaches the ongoing war. This gives Lunais and Nileste the opportunity to find common ground and develop their relationship.
I really wish I could say otherwise, but currently the LGBT representation in Timespinner feels awkward at best, immersion-breaking at worst.

-My biggest complaint has to do with difficulty, of rather the lack there of. I am far from being a highly skilled player and I do not demand a game to be as hard as i.e. Hollow Knight. Still, I desire a reasonable challenge, which is why I chose Normal mode. I completed the game without dying once -in fact, the only time I even came close to dying was by accident. If you decide to play this game look for a code to immediately play Nightmare mode, otherwise prepared to be utterly underwhelmed.

-There is a decent variety of orbs and equipment to use but there is no need to bother with most of it, since the distinctions between one and the other are minor. It would have been better if there were fewer choices but properly developed.

-The time mechanic is more or less a gimmick and nothing more.

One of the few Metroidvania I've actively enjoyed. The combat allows for multiple playstyles and adaptive scenarios, which is always welcome. It offers a good challenge without getting too difficult. The characters are great to interact with on top of it. The representation is always welcome. Gameplay is good, maybe a bit too easy.
It's very structured as a metroidvania and a real power trip once you grinded the powers.

Story is awful, as soon as I saw the protagonist using her powers to throw a stone at a guy insulting her I knew where this was coming from, and that I wasn't going to like it. More towards the end she gets more and more insufferable, totaly driven mad with power even though the writing does not indicate it to be a bad thing. The dialog with the emperor is the worst fanfiction type of writing I've ever seen, but the worst part is when she defunds medical science and research, a truly ignorant move.

LGBTQ representation is awful, no straight character is ever more than an enemy and every friendly NPC can't stop talking about their sex life in the middle of the world's end. I'd say its queerbaiting and tokenism, but once you notice that one of the devs put a trans self-insert to sleep with the protagonist you realize it's just bad writing.

From the uninteresting takes and the less than 10 hours it took me to finish the game twice and get all achievments, I can't recommend this game. You'd better off playing Bloodstained or Symphony of the Night again and again.

Gameplay 7/10. I like it! Story 3/10. Metroidvanias don't always have npcs for a reason.
I love the gameplay. Nice art style, moves, music, backgrounds on point. There is a gigantic difference between normal and hard, but it's ok if you know how to play.

The really big issue of this game is that the characters are so fucking lame you just don't care about them. They feel so empty and forced that they are forgettable. I swear the game would be better without them.

But at least the main character story is good. You have a reason to continue and you archieve it.

Bought it to support the creators more than anything. Something I can't do often.

It took me 17.2 hours to 100% complete the game. Is it worth it? Well, while it has it's ups and downs, I must recommend this game. It is quite short if you are an experienced metroidvania player, but it doesn't drag on like other games. $20 is too much for this game, so I suggest you wait for a discount.

The perfect DSvania (not SOTN, as many say). This is a polished metroidvania that is very enjoyable to play. Really good graphics and soundtrack. There are many interesting combinations of weapons and spells, but isn't much other equip. If you've played DS «Castlevania's», this is literally spiritual (full gameplay copy) successor, but with its own detailed world and lore. 100% walkthrough takes 10 hours.
P.S. The only thing the game failed is the ridiculous insertion of the modern society trends in subquests. They don't play any role, don't fit the atmosphere and just looks kind of dumb.

Too much uninteresting story, not enough good gameplay. The story goes on and on and even has multiple endings, which wouldn't be bad if it weren't for the boring gameplay. There is a great time controlling mechanic that's hardly used at all in the game. I suppose that you could use it a bit more, but the game is so easy on normal difficulty that you don't need to use it, except for a handful of times where it's actually required in order to progress.

You can't play it on difficult until you've completed normal, which took about 8 hours including all the side quests. The game is so easy on normal difficulty, that only I died only once in those 8 hours. The final boss took just over a minute to beat. After beating the final boss you learn that there are multiple endings, so I fought the final boss again to see the other ending and it took even less time to beat the final boss the second time. It's so boring that I have no interest in wasting another 8 hours slogging through the story on difficult. It would have been a lot more fun to play if there was some actual challenge and the time controlling mechanic was better utilized. Make difficult mode available on the first playthrough, please, devs!

More fun game mechanics and less endlessly reading text from uninteresting NPCs, please! I'm sure I'm not the only one who would rather fight enemies a lot more than finding out about the sex life of some of the NPCs.

Decent enough metroidvania but ultimately unremarkable, there tons of better options in the genre.

Exploration wise, the level design and time mechanics work well but everything feels so empty, you'll spend most of your time (specially early) just walking, even with that issue it's somehow enjoyable.

Combat wise, it's just too easy; you have way too much HP, you'll probably never die, or only to one or two bosses if you don't wanna use healing items. Leveling orbs seems pointless, you'll probably stick to one of the high damage ones from the early game and just murder everything.

The only aspect that was starting to grab me was the story, at some point I was really interested in the planets and characters but after certain point the writing becomes really bad, many of the collectable lore notes become twilight-fanfiction levels of horrible, and characters just prove to be extremely one dimensional; also the main character's views never evolve as the plot widens. After some point, it didn't really go anywhere from me.

Amazing. Old-school like, kind of a dungeon crawler-adventure-platformer mashup. I didn't really enjoy the forced hetero-homo-trans-whatever tags on the characters, and parts of the dialogue are just plain stupid. Everything else is awesome.

A story-rich metroidvania with melee-focused combat. The story seems a bit... tedious at times but if you skim through all the text then you get the gist. If you like most pixel games you'll probably enjoy this one. Haven't played Nightmare difficulty but I assume the difficulty range is satisfactory no matter what kind of experience you're looking for

Fans of the Castlevania series, especially Order of Ecclesia in particular, will find that Timespinner is a really decent alternative. Despite taking inspiration from the series, Timespinner does have lots of its own merits to offer to players.

Pros
- Gorgeous spritework and really smooth animation
- Platforming feels tight
- Has a large variety of abilities which lets you to customise your playstyle, while the Orb system takes this to another level by allowing you to pick abilities right down to each consecutive press of your basic attacks
- Unique time-stop mechanics which plays a part in enhancing both combat and exploration
- The time travelling premise of the story is reflected in gameplay with changes in the past affecting the future
- Lots of really uniquely designed enemies

Cons
- Takes awhile to rev up, gameplay feels really limited until you start to gain more exploration and combat abilities
- Writing is sometimes unnatural and awkward, particularly for dialogue
- Quite a few abilities come across as redundant or useless
- Despite it being a core element, the changes you see from the actions in the past feel lacking in significance when it comes to non-plot elements
- Time-stop mechanic somewhat underutilised when it comes to platforming

If you love Metroidvanias, you will find that Timespinner is a solid addition to the genre. It does have its flaws, but ultimately the experience of playing through the game was rather pleasant and I found myself wanting more. Also it bears mentioning that this game was produced by a relatively small team, so the end result was rather amazing considering how complete of a product it felt like.

Play Hollow Knight or Ori instead of this. Even the 30years older game Castlevania is 50x better. There are no bugs to report, but the game feels empty and incomplete. There is very little content and the dialogues are too much of identity politics to feel right. Every boss fight is easy and no tactics is involved. Orbs are a fun concept but lacks any meaning other than looking differently. The different orbs are not required in any situations. A lot of the corridors are just blank and nothing in them. The power ups has little impact on your character. The follower does very little for you, just a little damage here or there. The game just feel incomplete and is not worth the price.

Wow, I couldn't believe I only played this game for 9 hours.

Genuinely fun, interesting mechanics, good story. It didn't go quite where I wanted it to go, but I felt pretty satisfied at the end and I was glad I played through it. The gameplay is solid, the challenge level is pretty consistent, and even the tough boss fights were not so nuanced it took too long to learn.

I'd recommend it, especially on sale, but it's a nicely made game put together with care

Timespinner is a solid Metroidvania. Good gameplay, great music, pretty middle-of-the-road story.

The time stop mechanic could have been used a little better but only serves a good purpose at the beginning of the game for platforming, which is rendered moot by abilities you receive later in the game. Later on you really only use it as a way to dodge attacks during boss fights. It could have been used to a much greater degree.

The Orb system is good and provides a decent assortment of abilities. I feel like there should have been more of an emphasis on the element system as well as the utility of different Orbs. Maybe use the Orb abilities to get obstacles or interact with the environment in some way. You get 3 loadout slots and all I really used them for was my default loadout and a long range loadout that I only used for a specific type of enemy. Maybe some kind of shield Orb for a quick block.

The real highlight of this game was the art and music design. They were spectacular.

The game is relatively short for what it is. I was just over 8 hours on my playthrough. I have no plans to go through NG+ or Nightmare Mode.

I'd say all in all it's worth a play, but maybe wait until a sale.

If I was able to give a Mixed instead of a Yes/No, I would.

Timespinner is a fairly decent metroidvania - the platforming and combat are acceptable, the gimmicks are alright and the story's good enough.

The problem is that I'm using terms like 'acceptable' and 'decent'. Very little about the game is really impressive - it's functional. It's okay. It's fun enough. But it never really pushes beyond that.

Length-wise, the game's fairly short for a metroidvania - I clocked eight and a half hours, completed most of the optional content that wasn't just raw grind and got 100% map completion. Backtracking was relatively minimal as (aside from a set of keycards) there were only a few spots that required the handful of unlockable traversal powers that weren't specifically to lock in progression. Nearly all the treasure you can find is just health/magic/sand upgrades anyway and there's very little to search for that's exciting.

The time gimmick was so-so - it was kind of superfluous as a combat tool, existing only to do a quick dodge during a boss fight or maybe use an enemy as a platform on one or two occasions. Moving back and forth between eras was largely pointless as well - outside of scripted/mandatory points, there was almost no ways to affect the other timeline.

And combat was... well, it was easy. I think there were only three bosses I had to make more than one attempt at (one of which was because the final boss decided that it was going to be immune to the game's primary timestopping gimmick - surprise!) and not once during the non-boss gameplay. And I didn't even bother to try playing optimally - I just grabbed a weapon setup that felt comfortable-ish in the first quarter of the game and stuck with it.

That all said, it's still a decent enough game. I got eight hours out of it and enjoyed it. But it never transcends out of 'okay' and into 'good' or 'great'.

It's a solid metroidvania with an intriguing story that handles the complexities of time travel well.

That said, holy shit do the writers shoehorn that marginalized representation in there with all the tact and subtlety of a wrecking ball. Giving a stranger a potato does not typically segue into a monologue about how she's asexual so her boyfriend has a gay lover.

The story is meh. The characters are cringe. The character art is ugly.
The map between the past and present is basically an exact copy which is boring. The same enemies also get reused in both time periods, so the enemy variety is poor.

But all of that is forgiven for the great gameplay, music, and art, aside from the aforementioned portraits.
I only wish it were longer with more time puzzles.

Fun game, all things considered. The visuals are lovingly crafted to perfection, the sound work is flawless and never annoying, the soundtrack is amazing.
I liked the basic story but the characters are way too far in SJW territory for my taste. I tend to think true social justice, tolerance and acceptance is only ever achieved when nobody feels a 'need' to mention these things anymore either way and I think it certainly doesn't help to rub trans- and homosexual content in people's faces -all the time-. It's not a reason for me not to play the game but it does get annoying at some point.
Also, too many bossfights for my taste. I hate bossfights.

Take from this what you will. The game itself is flawlessly made and fun to play.

Gameplay was good, it was too easy though. You unlock higher difficulties after beating the game but at that time, you won't care anymore. Some orbs (Weapons) are useless, some are better than the other, overall not very balanced, there's also not a lot of variety. Think of it as Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia Lite.

Story is nothing to write home about, it has LGBT elements in it if you're interested.

Gameplay was fun and even a bit challenging at times. I appreciate that it’s practically an SNES version of Castlevania: SOTN. However, the storyline wasn’t really present, and the LGBTQ message feels really forced. The game only took about 20hours to beat with the majority of achievements. All in all, I’d give it a 2.5/5

I don't play a lot of action games these days. However I'm glad I bought this one as there was an entertaining amount of story, exploration and side quests. There is an easy mode where you can't die, which is helpful for those of us who don't like boss fights. This feels like a modernized SNES game. Never did get that last crow familiar though. Good game if you like Metroidvania games. Interesting story idea. The game did not need the weird gender-politics scene in the middle of the game. The scene detracted from the game as it made no significant impact on the story and just felt forced and obligatory rather than actually developing an attachment to the characters. Otherwise, great game.

Mostly competent, but also not really anything you haven't seen before.

It's Castlevania by another name. Specifically, it's a dumbed down Order of Ecclesia in terms of equipment and Symphony of the Night in terms of basic structure... but with much less opportunity to tread from the beaten path.

It's shorter than either of those games, which can be a bit of a bummer since length in a title like this also correlates directly with the number of tools you can expect to find in your arsenal by the end of the game. Familiars end up feeling like an afterthought, the weapon variety is pretty naff (and 100% ripped off of Order of Ecclesia), and there isn't really a whole lot worth going out of the way for.

As is the norm with SoTN style Castlevanias, you get a fair bit of fluff compared to their less RPGish counterparts. You'll see a fair number of long flat cooridors with the same enemy repeated several times. Enemy behavior (bosses included) is probably where the game suffers the most since it's extremely basic compared to the Castlevania series, but that's to be expected since it's an indie affair. A bigger let down than that though is that your tools for traversing the world are limited in number and lack any originality. The single thing that distinguishes it from either of the Castlevania games i've already mentioned is the ability to freeze time which lets you make platforms out of enemies and their projectiles... which while that does create opportunities for traversal, it rarely seems all that optional and it's also not particularly original.

Plot is competent and a tad basic, revealed through a combination of cutscenes and lore dump collectibles. The obvious analog would be Axiom Verge since both are indie title homages to similar games, though I think Axiom Verge is a good bit more subtle. Speaking of subtlety, if you like girl power and lgbtqiaam2r+ pride subplots delivered with all of the finesse of a hammer to the head, you'll probably love it.

I'm going to give it a lukewarm recommend since the environments are nice and it at least delivers a tone that is a little different from what you see in most SoTN homage titles. That said, don't expect anything to blow you away. If you're interested in it, just be aware that you've probably already played a better version of this game before with a slightly different paint job.

Note: I received this game as gift

This game is one that I had high hopes for based off the trailer. I was excited to see what unique things this game had to offer and how stopping time affected battles and how doing things in the past affected the environment in the future. Sadly I was disappointed.

The time freeze mechanic is one that you rarely have to use in the game. There is a few boss battles where it's necessary to use to dodge some attacks but it ended up trivializing most. It is used to progress through some sections of the game but only to
jump on top of enemies
.

I found the overall difficultly of this game on normal to be way to easy. I died twice in this game (once to a boss and once to a normal enemy) and I'm not particularly that great at these types of games. The damage output from bosses is not very punishing and you pause the game to use items mid fight without an eating animation or a time limit to when you can use another item. There is a insane difficulty which I found out that you can use a code to unlock it or just beat the game.

In this game you'll find yourself constantly switching between timelines as you unlock more abilities. The changes you do in the past mainly impact the story. There are not many optional changes you can do in the past to open up explorable areas.

The characters that give you side quests in this game seem alright at first but the more side quests you do, the more weird they become. You get a lot of sexual innuendos thrown at you and find out that everybody is into polygamy and gay for each other. If that was the dialog from one character I wouldn't care but the writer focused on this way too much for how short the game is. I much rather hear more of a character back story than that crap.

The main positives are the art style, backtracking once you've unlocked certain abilities, the large assortment of elemental attacks you can use and platforming aspect of the game. At it's current price, lackluster use and necessity of it's advertised mechanic, the lack of difficulty and puzzles as well as the writer's push of their ideology I can't give this game a positive review.

Pros:
+ Metroidvania
+ Good controls
+ Good music

Cons:
- Short
- Too easy. There is 'Nightmare Mode' but it's unlocked until you finish the game.
- Familiars are not different enough. They all do a basic melee attack and a spell, just pick your favorite flavor and don't change it, so it keeps leveling up along with you.
- Orb leveling system. Just like the familiars, they level up as you use them, so you are penalized for changing orbs midway. I ended up using the same orbs for every encounter, just switching necklace or rings as needed.
- Equipment makes little difference, just equip the bigger numbers, also it doesn't show on the character.
- Art: I liked it at the start, but in general the color scheme feels dull and every area felt the same.
- Quests are repetitive: while they flesh out the [strike]meh[/strike]-characters, they usually just consist on looting or killing some enemies, very much mmorpg-style.
- The story themes are very much on your face, sometimes even preachy. At some point I stopped caring.
- Timetravel made no sense (like in many other games),
but going about a thousand year into the past and doing some drastic changes, and the result it's just an open door in the future???? can't buy that.
- Timestop mechanic is underutilized, just used to reach few places.

I had high hopes for this game for its style and genre, but it was thoroughly dissapointing. The game is pretty much unfinished in all aspects. There was so much invested in the artwork that everything else suffered, and eventually so did the art.

This genre of game is defined by its art, gameplay and story and this game fails spectacularly at the last two.

Gameplay: 2/5. Enemies are boring. Weapon variety is meaningless (I wont the game with the second set of weapons. Shops and upgrades, meaningless. Boss fights absolutely trivial with the Timestop, is merely hard when they disable it. Like you add one feature to the game (time-stopping) and it breaks the game so hard you have to remove it for the last 3 or 4 bosses.
Level design is bad: 75% of rooms are duplicates. Quests are grindy and meaningless.

Story: 2/5. The storyline is typical of the genre and at best a cliche. The only novelty added was that everyone was either gay, trans or evil. Literally a pamphlet on gender issues. Interracial lesbian queens in a story that you can finish in one sitting.

The game is too short and too unpolished to be worth even its short length.

This is a great little game with two caveats.
It's easy and it has some character writing issues.

First off, I got the game on sale for $9.99, and it’s good at that price. I find the art direction and sprites are gorgeous. It looks like a better done SNES-style game. If you like retro 2D combat (that plays better than ‘back in the day’) this is a good one to pick up. It’s not a long game, but it’s enjoyable. If you like the idea of messing with time and seeing what changes, they don’t call it “Time”spinner for no reason.

Gameplay:
The weapons you get in this game are all fairly unique and fun to play around with. (Minus the ice orbs. Those feel like you are spitting on the floor.) Jumping, movement, exploration, combat, they all feel good. Enemies are well animated and have enough variety to make you enjoy bashing them in. The largest hang-up with the combat is that this game is extremely easy on the normal setting. In part this is due to the “level up” system. Yet even at the beginning, I ran into a critter by accident and only lost a sliver of health. I was a bit surprised I didn’t take more damage. You start out feeling like a miniature tank. Only do later bosses make you worried about getting hit.

These bosses have set attack patterns and telegraphs. As it should be! It reminded me of play Mega Man. (A good thing.) Unfortunately, due to your tank-like nature and the ability to pop however many health items you want in the menu, it never feels tense. There’s not really much worry about the few bosses hard enough to send you back to your save point. This problem might be solved in the New Game+ or Nightmare Mode. I haven’t played either yet to find out.

Story:
I enjoyed the basis of the story. The world and the history were all well thought out and someone clearly put time in to develop the backstory. It’s this backstory that comes out as you play with time. It’s always nice when a writer or game designer knows what their characters are doing and what it means. Brava to them on that score. I ended up, I suppose, with what would be called a ‘true’ ending, beating the ‘final’ extra boss. That ending was a satisfying one. Kudos.

Other than the easy difficulty, my other gripe with Timespinner is related to my work as a writer. At one point in the game, there is a scene where the writer/author uses their characters to lecture the player. They do so about a point they have been belaboring up to this point. Yet in this scene it is clearly the writer speaking and not the characters. Creators naturally write characters with things we value, which is all well and good. The danger is not to break the nature of the character/world. This scene in particular felt extra preachy. I came to play a game, not be moralized to. It was also a little weird to be suddenly lectured about people's sexual choices in a game about revenge and saving your Mom? I don't think a short game like this can afford this. Such issues could be tackled in a longer game, where such things might have a proper build up and feel more natural instead of being shoehorned in.

Summery:
If you adjust the difficulty of this game after the first play though, Timespinner is a fun engaging game that’s easy to pick up or put down at any time. It’s short, but with the New Game+ and Nightmare, it’s probably a good start for people looking to get into these sorts of games. (Unfortunately, due to the scene where the creator is lecturing you on what you should believe about sex, I can't recommend it for younger kids.) As a final note, the familiars are cute.
Maybe next playthrough I can afford the ‘shiny thing’ from Crow...

TLDR: Nice metroidvania, but too easy and too short. Get it on sale.

The game plays practically like Symphony of the Night, in terms of abilities, gear, and experience. Weapons are replaced with orbs which level up, removing the need to find a better statted version of the same weapon. Each orb also has a respective chargeable spell, which costs aura, this games' mana.

The main gimmicks of the game are the abilities to stop time and travel to the past and present.
Stopping time allows one to stand on enemies (and some attacks) without taking damage, and is mostly used as a repositioning tool as you cannot damage enemies during stopped time, while time travel allows the player to switch between two different maps to explore.

Onto my personal flaws with the game.

The time stop mechanic feels severely underused throughout the entire game.
It is only needed once in the form of standing on enemies (or attacks) to progress in the beginning, a few times for a hidden item here and there, and one enemy which can only be fought in stopped time (For which there isn't really a good reason to fight him in the first place, because you can progress without killing it).
Stopping time is useful in boss fights to more easily dodge attacks and reposition, but is never necessary (hence the no damage + no timestop achievement).
It feels like the entire game could've easily gone without the ability altogether, which makes one wonder why it is in it in the first place.

I also feel like more could've been done with the time travel mechanic outside of story purposes.
Throughout the game, major events that you cause in the past have a story impact on the present and is needed to process, but outside of that there is very little in the past that actually affects the present. (The only thing I can recall were some plants that you can burn in the past that open up some pathways in the present.)

Lastly, the game feels too easy and too short. I'm not the type of guy who likes playing a game again on a higher difficulty, so it would've been nice if the harder difficulty mode was either available from the start, or that the normal difficulty just isn't so easy. After just a bit of exploration outside the main path, enemies quickly start dealing trivial damage, and that isn't even considering how much easier time stop makes it to dodge about any attack.
The game itself isn't very long either, and I achieved 100% on the map, including all optional bosses and side quests, in less than 7 hours, which feels pretty short for 20 bucks.

At the end of the day, I enjoyed the game for the time I played it, which unfortunately isn't very long, but felt that there was a lot more potential for this game.

EDIT: AND OF COURSE THE GAME GOES ON SALE RIGHT AFTER MY REVIEW

The game play is solid. My only complaint is it gets very preachy while delving into identity politics. There is a right way to incorporate positive identity themes and a wrong way... this was a bit on the wrong side of that. For great examples of the right way to do it, look to the Netflix show: The Dragon Prince.

While this is definitely a very good metroidvania, anyone purchasing the game should probably be aware of a couple of things.

Pros:
+Visuals, animations, and music are top notch. Almost all of the animations are incredibly smooth and fluid and the music is good enough to stand alone.
+Bosses: While there are 2 bosses that are variations of an older boss in 100 percent playthroughs, both are optional and well designed anyway. The other 8 bosses are some of the best I've ever seen; with challenging but fair tells (for the most part); competent patterns; unique attacks; and changes in behavior dependent on player position, difficulty, and boss health.
+Difficulty levels: The difficulty is highly variable, and while I wish nightmare was available from the start without using a code I still appreciate how different my first and NG+ playthroughs were.
+Parts of the story were really good. I appreciate the changing perspectives of the main character , the side characters, and the amount of good LGBTQ+ representation.

Neutral:
Customization is kinda eh. The costumes are all reskins of one another that are unlocked either through a code or beating certain bosses. The equipment all have interesting lore tidbits and pictures, but don't change your appearance and only accessories can add effects besides stat bonuses (with those effects being restricted to things like status immunities, more exp, or longer time stops). The spells are all quite unique though only a few are viable, the same goes for rings, and too many of the orbs are simply repeats of one another (the starting orb, the shattered orb, and the nether orb all essentially do the same thing, but your blue orb will likely do more damage by the time you get the other two due to having it for longer. The gun orb is essentially a better version of the wind orb unless, and the forbidden tome is a better version of the gun orb. The iron orb and blade orb, despite being different elements and having different ring effects, essentially have the same spell and base attack.) Moreover, you have no reason to use different orbs unless you want to use the spell or ring that get leveled up by them, but most rings are barely affected by levels in the first place and just a spell typically isn't enough justification for one orb over another. Still, the variance in most of the spells and rings, plus the good variety of orb options even including repeats makes customization fairly decent although it could have been much better.

Reskinning: As mentioned above and below, there's a decent amount of reskinning in equipment, orbs, enemies, and bosses. I feel like most enemy reskins come with fairly interesting new abilities, lore, or traits that justify their existence, and the same applies to 2 of the 3 reskinned bosses. The areas are all also fairly interesting even when revisited in a different time. There really is too much reskinning, however, for a game that was worked on for such a long time that got a far larger budget than it asked for.

Cons:

There are really only obvious negatives. Unfortunately, they're both a massive pain and are likely the reasons someone would not want the game.

Levels: You still get orb and familiar level ups during nightmare mode level one, and the random chance of most drops means that you'll often unintentionally overlevel just because you wanted a specific item (with many random drops being needed for quests). The issue of needing to grind out certain items is fixed in NG+ since you likely have most enemy items, but you start off overleveled thus undermining the entire point. The grinding never gets boring, but overleveling often makes parts of the game a joke. Random drops are fixed in speedrun mode, but that's only accessible through a code and also disables achievements, thus undermining the entire point. This means you can 2HKO the first two phases of the final boss in normal mode, and it takes until the end of Nightmare level one to encounter the originally intended challenge when playing through NG+. It's a shame too because the bosses are all excellently designed, but you wouldn't know that unless you avoid fighting normal enemies or try to start a nightmare mode level one run in a new savefile (which is an overall worse experience than NG+ nightmare mode since you'll need to get certain items all over again).

The other big flaw is in the storytelling, specifically in telling and not showing. Ironically, I can't demonstrate a lot of the issues without spoiling the plot (making this an example of the same behavior), but it's things like demons being cited as a moral event horizon of lachiem even though they don't seem to do anything particularly bad (and... the player also has the option to use a demon familiar and dark elemental magic with no ramifications or acknowledgement in story). The lachiem are supposed to lack magic, and yet we see a large amount of lachiem magic users. The bleakness is supposed to cause a drastic shift in personality, but a guy who was nearly killed by it doesn't seem to become aggresive. Moreover, a lot of plot elements in the last two endings feel tossed together, and there are often (but definitely not always) cases of gameplay and story separating.

TLDR: Most of the game is godly, but be prepared a plot tied together by string, a lot of reskins, and problems with drop rates and being too overleveled.

I went into the game having quite a bit of fun as I enjoy a good metroidvania. It ticked all the boxes for me.

Sadly once you get some actual time into the game you will immediately notice the ham-fisted dialogue that seems completely out of place. So much so I gave up reading any of it once it made me cringe knowing where it was going from the little bits I did catch, as it felt like it was preaching to me instead of having an actual story.

Due to the dialogue I cannot recommend it. It's an average Symphony of the Night clone gameplay wise, but that's it. Spend your money elsewhere because there are better options on Steam that aren't trying to preach at you.

I really want to love this game it pushes all the right symphony of the night buttons. It has novels weapons, spells and even a wide range of passives to add on. Sadly the game on normal difficlty is way to easy and on the harder difficulty gets easier the farther you get. Plus about halfway through the game starts overloading you with weapons most of which are not well balanced. Of the dozen or so weapons I really used maybe 4, and 3 spells. The storyline has some unique twists like every single ally you meet being lgbtq although having three be tossed in under 2 minutes of dialogue seemed far to rushed and hamfisted. I would have liked the quests to be more spaced, like an unfolding book, then some hey we're all lgbtq parade! If it had been done slower it would have better shown the tension folks often feel when revealing such things to strangers. Still it was a good twist but with the difficulty and gameplay issues I can't say I recommend this game that starts strong and by endgame is a letdown with all but the last boss getting walked over on harder difficulties.

Beautiful game, but ultimately it shows that it was the work of a single person who is an artist first and a game designer/developer second. The graphics are gorgeous and the controls are good, but the gameplay is lacking, especially as the game goes on.

Specific criticisms:
- The environment far too many rooms that are just long flat corridors where you encounter one enemy at a time.

- The leveling up system is far too generous and seems designed with the expectation that the player knows their way through the game. If you get a bit lost and do much backtracking, you will quickly become over-powered just by killing stuff while you're trying to figure out where to go next, even without deliberate grinding.

- Damage from some enemies can be difficult to avoid, but it also tends to be only small amounts at a time, even from bosses. Combined with the ease of leveling, this leads to the endgame situation that you can basically just tank everything and keep mashing attack... might need to burn a few healing items versus the bosses but other than that, all challenge in combat is gone by the endgame.

- Given how core it seems to be to the game's theme, the time-pausing mechanic is of surprisingly little value. Maybe it's more important in combat on Nightmare difficulty, but in my playthrough on Normal, I really only used it when needed to use an enemy as a platform to reach high locations.

The game is still very much worth playing, if a bit too easy. However, I feel like the design of the levels, enemies and character power progression doesn't do the controls and art assets justice. I feel like this is the sort of game that would be great for modding, for that reason; it would be possible to use the same basic components that make up this game, and build a much better one out of them.

Despite the pretty art and the lovely music there really isn't much to this game. The combat is repetitive, the enemies and their attacks are samey or straight up re-skins, and the bosses are nearly as simple as you can get. The story, characters, and dialogue aren't any better with shallow characterization and a simplistic plot line that isn't well conveyed. Side quests are purely check box trash with no interesting objectives or challenges.

I was hopeful for this game when I bought it, but it's left me feeling unsatisfied. Music's nice though.

This otherwise great game is broken to the point of being unplayable, and by the time you realize this, you will have too many hours to be able to get a refund.

If the devs had played through their own game from start to finish even once, they would realize that after a few hours of play on Normal:

* you can walk through all enemies rather than fighting them (don't even need to jump around them)
* armor is unnecessary
* weapon upgrades are unnecessary
* there are 1-2 obvious weapon choices that not only do far more damage but also cover more area than other weapons
* there's only 1-2 spells worth using because they do far more damage than all others while (again) covering more area than any others/there's no tradeoff between area coverage and damage

Every time I level up I sigh because the game has become (somehow) even easier than before.

Nightmare is not a fix because it's made for NG+ runs and is impossibly hard.

There are multiple threads all over the interwebs about the difficulty being terribly balanced, but somehow the devs still ignore this. What a frustrating mess. Avoid until they fix this issue, which considering people have been posting about this problem since 2018, will probably be never.

Not bad, but every positive I found had a negative.

The gameplay is fine, but having to level my familiar by making him take a whack before I killed a foe got tiresome pretty fast, as did backtracking back and forth to grind.

The items were interesting, but after spending half an hour whacking light bulbs to grind the money I needed to get the really good ones, took any joy out of getting them. I got better armor from drops immediately afterward, and then a chest popped up with even better armor than that.

The story and lore are interesting--more interesting by far than the characters I encountered, who were all minor variants of the same generically nice and inoffensive personality that haunts modern day comic books and so many other games. The one character who seemed to be breaking the mold was left behind in the intro. We're informed that the heroine is supposed to have anger issues, and for a few moments, I thought that might actually be the case. Unfortunately, apart from one moment that got my hopes up, she remained more interesting for her abilities than her temperament.

It all evened out, but (since there's no neutral review) I almost recommended this game regardless, until I asked myself if I cared enough about was going on to warrant the twelve dollars I spent from my fixed income, having bought it on sale.

No. There are better games for cheaper.

I actually quite liked this game, although it ends up being too short and using magic balls just isn't as interesting as the weapon variety of Symphony of the Night, for example..

Do you know what I didn't like? I came back to the game's forum just wondering if anything changed since I completed it, and I found a message saying I was permabanned from posting in the forum due to violating the rules.

Would you like to know what I actually did which was so terrible? I took part in a thread in which I questioned why nobody in the game seems to be heterosexual.

That was it. Never did I attack anyone for not being heterosexual. I merely pointed out that everyone in the game being bisexual gay or transgendered is completely ridiculous. And that it felt like it was forced down the player's throat to a certain extent. Literally entire conversations/cutscenes in the game about nothing but sex, relationships, and being transgendered. It simply isn't what people play metroidvanias for.

What was wrong with talking about this? More to the point, what is wrong with the developers? Are you really this sensitive?

wow i started this game and honestly felt a sense of bliss and awe at the first hour or two of gameplay, and was incredibly excited about what i was getting stuck into. it felt like a beautiful homage to castlevania SOTN and chronotrigger, with its own thing going on...

then about an hour or two in, the gameplay just completely fizzles, the mechanics go nowhere, the levelling system is so bad you just become so overpowered you dont even need to pay attention to the enemies. the time freeze mechanic is almost COMPLETELY abandoned, the story becomes totally directionless and resorts to this tired trope of 'the villians arent as bad as you think and heroes arent as good', and these stupid characters from the village just keep sending you on tedious fetch quests and 'go kill 5 bats for me thanks'

never felt so much disappointment for a game im sorry to say. wish the devs had planned the mid section of the game A LOT more because the potential here was incredible

This is a great metroidvania. It does not necessarily have any groundbreaking improvements to the genre and is fairly standard as far as difficulty and mechanics are concerned. It has an interesting enough story and does a lot to represent members of the LGBTQIA+ community in video games, which I have not encountered before. It is not a long game, but very worth playing. It might be best appreciated if purchased on sale.

I really disappointed at the end of my first and only play through of this game to have to give it a negative review.

TL;DR - Game plays fine, writing is atrocious

-Pros
-Platforming: Once enough movement mechanics were unlocked
-Combat: Fun and varied, in both enemy types and weapon styles
-General Plot: the basic concept of the plot was good, most of which was experienced through lore dumps
-Game length: 10 hours blind play, $20 game, $2/hour is a good value

-Cons
-Writing: This is a social justice game. Other than both of the one dimensional evil despotic emperors, every character was gay, trans, or poly. The characters talk constantly about their sexual inclinations and genital preferences unasked at every opportunity. The main story is put on hold during multiple cutscenes for these conversations.
-Platforming: While good eventually, it takes far too long to unlock the mechanics
(double jump, dash, etc)
which make it enjoyable, meaning most of the playthrough is slow and tedious.
-Unique Mechanics: The time-stopping mechanic is a cool idea, but executed poorly. Most of the time you forget it's there, its not really necessary, and you cannot deal damage while time is stopped, so its value is limited.
-Ending:
There are three endings (though two are extremely similar), none of which had a satisfying payoff. No matter what you choose, you are considered the good guy and and everything generically works out.
Ultimately, its the writing that really took my enjoyment of this game away. There is a major difference between finding a well fleshed out, interesting character who happens to have an alternative lifestyle and being told upfront that this is a benevolent, altruistic 'insert minority group' character, and never learning anything else about that character. In the former case, you will like the character for their complexity, which the alternative lifestyle can add to. In the latter, being told by the writer to like the character will generally not work, because the character is shallow. In the past, there were 'token' characters. Whether that was token gay or token black. Those characters had no personable traits. They were only present to represent their minority group. This kind of writing just expands that concept to the entire cast. If the most interesting thing about your character is that they belong to a minority group, they are not an interesting character.

Despite the gameplay being good I believe this type of cheap writing by game game developers needs to be discouraged whenever possible, so the gaming community can have better games in the future, hence the negative review.

It's pretty good. A metroidvania with multiple endings, reward exploration and fun combat mechanics that let you build your own weapon (kind of) by cleverly combining different orbs with different rings.
Complaints I have is that the bosses feels easy and generic, most of which you can just tank through if you got the correct combination of orbs, ring effects and spells build. You get mobility based upgrade way too late, making some of the backtrack feels tedious even with the TP gates all over the map. I also wish I found out about the sash before I climbed the freaking tower with wheels for no reward.

Here are my main issues with the game:
1). The backtracking got incredibly tedious at times and then the rewards you got for backtracking felt meaningless and when you were backtracking, sure the portals were useful but still most of the time it felt that they were to out of the way to actually use.

2). The game felt significantly easier then some of the other Metroidvanias I've played which is not a bad thing, however it make a significant part of the game to easy and it almost felt like I should stop playing it. In my opinion the hardest parts of the game was where it relied on platforming. I do know that there is a way to increase the difficulty, but you first need to finish the game and at that point going through it again to get the challenge of the enemies that should've already been there kinda lessens the experience because now you know which areas are optional and the flow of the map you also know where to get some orbs to make the game more of a joke in the beginning.

3). The game is to short, my first playthrough of the game took about 10-12 hours and that was because I was dedicated to find everything, but on your second and third play through the game at max is a 4 hour game. It was really disappointing.

4). The time-stop mechanic, most of the time it is just worthless unless you are trying to get secrets. Other than that, I may have used it once when not looking for secrets.

5). The familiars seemed to do nothing, what so ever. It seems like it was tacked on at the last minute.

6). The sidequests were completely useless unless you are trying to 100% the game.

[7). I would comment about the story, but I skipped through all of the dialogue.]

That's about it for the complaints. The good stuff;

1). The game is absolutely stunning visually.

2). The level design can be creative, but the backtracking felt to tedious to actually go back to the beginning of the game and get a new gold ring.

3). The constant going into the past and getting an item to progress in the future and vice versa is really really cool, but after the first half of the game, there is no reason to go into the past.

4). The music is alright, not my favorite but it is still good.

5). The ability to change your orbs and jewelry on the fly, is really really cool and it allows for different play-styles.

Side Note: I absolutely love this game, it just has a bit to many flaws to rate it highly, but it has to many strengths to rate it poorly, so I would say wait for it to go on sale and buy it then.

Quite a phenomenal game, great storyline, decent side-quests, and loads of secrets. Different endings (leading to similar dialogue-endings but with differences, and some with more depth) make it a worthwhile game to play, especially difficulty-wise keeping you on your toes.

Some nitpicks were near the end, traversal of the second-last area of the game was very tedious and seemed like it would require luck to get a quite difficult jump done to get to one of the endings bosses. The beginning did feel a bit slow at times for pacing, but overall kept enough engagement to see through to the end.

Have yet to explore and 100% the game (very close with a couple missing areas for pseudo post-game traversal), but overall with the somewhat multiple endings and the newgame+ and nightmare mode, there is some replay-ability to the game.

It was hard for me to decide weather to recommend this game because it's so very close to being good, but there are just too many things that take away from it.

The Good

-Very pretty. High tier pixel art and animations.
-An fairly interesting sci-fi/fantasy story with a not often used twist to the time travel element that creates good drama.
-A choice of endings.
-While there are notable exceptions (I'm looking at you ice orb), most of the abilities look cool and feel fun to use.
-Some interesting map elements that you would expect form a metriod-vania style.
-A fun pause time mechanic.
-New game+

The Bad
-Too short for the price. Got to the ending I wanted in less than 10 hours and really didn't feel like playing anymore.
-The side quests are annoying. Mostly kill and fetch quests that remind me of the parts of MMOs people hate, and one quest with waaaay to vague of a clue as to where the item is that you get long before you can complete it.
-The alchemist felt kind of pointless. Given how easy getting the materials to craft the complementary items are, you might as well just get the neckless and ring along with the orbs. All it did was create more running between shops.
-Harder difficulties locked behind beating the game.
-Most bosses were very forgettable and not terribly challenging, although the final boss of the game for the ending I played was decent.
-Only one map element locked behind the time travel aspect. Waisted potential.
-I don't mind representation, but when literally every character in the game is either gay or bi, in the main character's culture poly is apparently the norm, a character in the tribe thought nothing of sleeping with a guy knowing she could get pregnant that she had no intention of staying with long term or even allowing to see the potential child (yes I realize the danger issues but that being the case she shouldn't have risked a kid with him in the first place) and everyone in her life including her daughter is apparently fine with this, and there's an entire dialog about acceptance of a trans character that adds nothing to the story, it makes it kind of obvious the author was pushing an agenda and didn't mind lessening the overall experience to do it.
-There were several times when I got sick of backtracking. There are several fast travel locations, but really not enough with how much you have to backtrack to get everything and while there is a speed upgrade that makes getting around funner and easier, it's very late in the game. It's really bad that it got tedious that quickly considering how short the game is.
-While it was fun at first, I honestly got pretty sick of the combat towards the end, partially tieing in with the previously backtracking problem and how many times I had to fight the same enemies. I skipped an entire area towards the end when I realized I had the option to, simply because I was ready to finish and be done with it.
-A few overdone story tropes that nothing particularly interesting was done with, especially bad towards the last 10% or so of the game.
-I just finished and I can't tell you a single character's name. None of them really endeared me enough to be that interested in their character.
-Several pointless corridors with a line of three or four of the same uninteresting enemy to fight through.

If I had dropped my review after the first hour or two of play it would have been positive. The game started reasonably strong, but the more I played the weaker it got. It's sad, because it has allot of potential. Might be worth your time on a $5 or less sale, but I wouldn't pay any more for it. There's just too many better options.
