Unresponsive, buggy, broken, rage inducing port.

The number of times I called Lara an idiot because she wouldn’t grab a ledge that was so obviously there was countless. The camera had a mind of its own and I died so many times because the camera and the grapple hook didn’t go well together. You would tell Lara to jump when she sliding down a ledge only for her to ignore you and fall to her death.

Now to tell you a little story that happens near the end of the game; in the Great Pyramid, I lost my patience because of timed jumps that required both Lara’s grapple hook to not glitch out (it did, many times) and for Lara to jump of a slide (she didn’t). So, before you can attempt these jumps the game had this irritating feature of check pointing you – however, this checkpoint happens before two flying Atlanteans spawn – so if you failed these jumps (which you inevitably will), you will have to re-fight these Atlanteans that throw fireballs at you and occasionally knock you flat off the platform so you can rewatch Lara slowly sink into the lava. After you kill the Atlanteans, your first step is to shoot the timed target. You shot it, now you have to jump onto a slippery path, Lara doesn’t jump when you tell her too and you have to watch Lara die in lava again. You get the point? I retried this well over twenty times before she FINALLY got to the next platform.

You know a game is broken when you hope the game doesn’t bug out and make you die and lose all your progress. It’s just Lara not grabbing a ledge, or the camera not responding, or Lara not listening to your controls.

I will say one good thing, the re-imagined levels are interesting to play through. I especially loved what they did with City of Vilcabamba and St. Francis Folly. Midas’s Palace, Sanctuary of the Scion, Natla’s Mines and The Great Pyramid were huge let downs however.

Just buy the PlayStation version instead if that’s an option for you. This version is way too broken to be enjoyed at all, I found myself more irritated than actually having fun.

I've been a Tomb Raider fan since I was a kid, I've loved every Tomb Raider game I've played, but this is not it unfortunately. The puzzles are good overall, the plot is decent (personally found it a bit lacking), but the controls are a nightmare. They are inconsistent and sometimes straight up unresponsive (you press buttons but Lara doesn't execute actions on time or at all) which makes it really hard and frustrating to beat certain parts of the game that require timely actions.

Just a few examples of the issues I encountered with the controls.
  • The grappling hook sometimes will not lock, despite the famous blue circle being focused and pointed at. Either this, or Lara will take a second too long to extend it and it won't lock, resulting in her death.
  • Lara sometimes will grab ledges that are very far (and that you were certain she wouldn't land) and sometimes she won't grab the ones that are very close and pretty much a sure shot. This made me feel unsure about most of the jumps I'd make.
  • The camera behaves erratically. From zooming in too close, not allowing you to see around you, to moving around randomly, which might make Lara miss jumps/grabs or aim at different targets while in combat.
  • Checkpoint system is also frustrating. Sometimes you get checkpoints every other corner, other times you don't get checkpoints until you've beaten an entire section, which means that if you miss a jump/grab (especially due to wonky controls) you have to redo the entire thing.

In addition to this, there are quite a few bugs that make it impossible to make progress in the game. For example, at some point early in the game Lara is supposed to grab a ledge, pull herself up, and immediately crouch to crawl through a tight space. When I first played, she would pull herself up and immediately drop down as if blocked by something. It took me hours to figure it out. The solution that worked out for me? Turning on VSync. Like... what?!

Unfortunately, all of these factors made the game frustrating to play. I like a good challenge, but rather often I'd find myself wondering if I was just missing the solution or if I got stuck by yet another bug. The overall experience was just painful to say the least, and I was left with nothing but relief after I finished the game, so I cannot recommend it to others. If you really wanna play this game, I strongly recommend gathering a huge amount of patience and goodwill, cause this game will put you to the test.

I used to play this game all the time on my PS2 when I was a kid, however the PC version is just too glitchy. From Laura's grappling hook just not working, to certain elements of the game just never going off, to Laura just not grabbing onto ledges she's supposed to grab onto. The game runs almost flawlessly on my old play station, so I'm incredibly disappointed that it's so full of bugs. I'm at the point where I can't even continue playing the game because her hook wont grab onto something you're supposed to pull out and use as a bridge. I'm really upset at the fact that I can't finish the game. I've spent hours resetting the game, my PC, the level, and there just isn't anything I can do to fix it. I know that the game is pretty old, but I do hope that they patch the bugs in it and make it playable.

I’m afraid you’ve been misled. I only play for sport.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a reimagining of the first entry in the franchise, intended as a celebration for 10 years of tomb raiding with a cool and snarky female protagonist. If only it didn’t miss the release date by a year…

Put this title beside the 1996 original, and it is downright jaw-dropping how far tech had evolved until 2007. Setting the mood and providing an exceptional sense of isolation are the locales, stretching from lush jungles to sand-swept ancient ruins. Lara, the protagonist, looks particularly great, backed up by smooth animation and even subtle buildups of dirt and grime as she maneuvers through levels, followed by a glistening shine when she heads for a drink. However, the remaining human cast is… more mixed in terms of quality, with floatier animation and less detail in physique or facial structure. Thankfully they are confined to cutscenes, unlike the nigh-ubiquitous water, which bears really weird reflection shaders.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2731555027

Please keep in mind to force anti-aliasing externally, or at least to not use the in-game Fullscreen AA option. This drastically worsens the visuals for no meaningful improvements. It’s also highly encouraged to keep v-sync on, as several physics-based puzzles don’t work correctly at higher framerates. Otherwise, stability issues are no concern, and the gameplay remains smooth on my Ryzen 9 3900X, 64GB RAM, 1070 Ti, Windows 10 Pro system, at 1440p 60 hertz.

Before even playing the game, players are introduced to a splendid main theme. On the sound front, the music definitely reigns supreme: smoothly transitioning from chillingly atmospheric ambience, to rather effective combat pieces. These help create an exquisite sense of isolation and loneliness as you trek through long-forgotten areas of the world. It is a joy to listen to the soundtrack.

And the sound effects and voice acting aren’t bad either. The cast is pretty small, and outside of most cutscenes you seldom hear your character even speak, but what dialogue is present, is fine. It’s a similar story for the foley, which is good given how often you’ll hear Lara clambering, climbing and vaulting with exaggerated, yet solid sound effects. Or indeed, a trusty shotgun to apply to any threats that get too close.

With the right incentive, you are just the woman to find artifacts for me.

A mysterious woman, Jaqueline Natla, contacts our resident adventurer-archaeologist Lara Croft with an offer to secure the Scion of Atlantis. While she initially accepts the job, Lara soon seeks the remainder of the collection for herself, especially to figure out the disappearance of her mother – even if it puts her at odds with powerful individuals.

It’s a solid premise for a story, and serves its purpose as a vessel by which the meat of the game can be justified.

-I'd love to join you, but I forgot my trunks.
-Why am I not surprised?

Throughout this action-adventure title, players control Lara and send her through ancient and treacherous caves and tombs. The majority of the gameplay is dictated by platforming, wherein our heroine jumps, climbs, shimmies, balances and swings from assorted pieces of the environment to cross gaps and avoid lethal peril. When this formula works, it works really well, with you stringing dazzling acrobatics while perched well above any solid footing.

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to experience confusion and frustration. Every so often you might find the camera unable to quite let you see where you’re aiming Lara’s jump, or even where she’s running towards - easy way to go splat. And when it’s not that, it’s simply her not registering that you instructed her to grab that blasted ledge, not fall like a brick and ragdoll. Death is relatively consequence-free, at the very least, but the plentiful checkpoints and free health restock does dampen the challenge aspect.

Something that does go well with platforming are the puzzle sections, which frequently include physics-active elements. These are quite fun to play through, without feeling frustratingly hard or unengaging. On the other hand, underwater sections have rather unusual controls, where ascending or descending is done by pressing separate buttons instead of being relative to the camera. Even when one gets used to them, there’s something not-quite-smooth about them.

Looks like our girl's pulled it off.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2727945658

Interspersed between platforming or puzzle challenges are combat encounters, usually with assorted misplaced wildlife. Lara can pepper them with bullets from her frequently dual-wielded firearms, but most of the time enemies will instead charge at her, necessitating a slow-motion evasive leap and a well-timed headshot to cleanly dispatch. This mechanic feels quite overused, even if it’s not strictly necessary for the regular hostile creatures, and the variety of weapons is on the low side – only four, but the gunplay itself remains serviceable.

Against many of the game’s bosses, your weapons will only anger them instead of damaging their health, which is where you need to use the slo-mo dive-and-shoot mechanic and cause them to lower their guard, or simply maim themselves against the environment. In that respect, the boss fights are still closer to a puzzle sequence than a straight-up shooter, which is rather welcome.

Aaaaand then you have to go through quick-time events to not get killed by the bosses.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2732411810

Over the course of the story, players will traverse four larger levels: Peru, Greece, Egypt and “Lost Island”. These are further split up into three or four shorter sections. Platforming, puzzle and combat challenge steadily rise throughout the campaign, via introducing verticality, backtracking and timing challenges. All this does come with the potential downside of getting lost or stumped on what to do next. Especially the later half of the game seems to tease you with switches that are just out of reach, and you'd be left scratching your head on how to get to them without splattering onto a lower floor. There will be a high chance of simply requiring a guide to get through.

Players can expect to complete the story within ten-to-twelve hours, accounting for the difficulty selected and time spent hunting for secrets. Replaying levels to secure all the secrets, and to listen to developer commentary, can add another chunk of playtime. Lara has plenty of alternate costumes she can wear (irrespective of how fitting they might be in the given level), and from the main menu there are concept art and character bios – all unlocked by finishing the game on higher difficulties, collecting secret items and clearing time trials.

Lastly, outside of the main story, there’s the Croft Manor: a massive mansion structured as a metroidvania, wherein Lara explores and unlocks new regions by clearing puzzles and, particularly, gathering back her equipment slowly.

Which is precisely why I've come to you, Miss Croft. This is a game you've played before.

A solid remake, Tomb Raider: Anniversary keeps players engaged with great platforming, puzzles, and a strong sense of isolation. Do mind the simplistic combat, lenient difficulty and technical issues.

Essentially unplayable. My PS3 just broke down recently, and I have been collecting the games I played on the system on my computer through Steam. I absolutely love this game, but not this version. There are bugs galore - the hair weirdly glitches out while you are moving, not to mention the exercise room in the manor is impossible because the mechanisms don't move properly and you can't jump from them properly. Plus, the movement is nauseating. It's just not made for Windows 10.

Bought this for a friend for like 70p.

Had to help him fix it as he got a steamapi.dll file issue, all he had to do was copy a file from Steam to the game folder, he just gave up with it though.

I eventually got him to play it, and while I was on a call while he was playing it, I had to put up with him going on about how fit Lara Croft is.

Game's good btw.

As of writing this, he has 0.8hours on record...

As long time fan of the Tomb Raider series I can say that this game is one of the better one's in the series as well as a great remake of the original. While many may not agree I think it takes the simple premise and core gameplay mechanics of the said game and updates it to what was at the time (2007) modern standards. Great gameplay, great visuals and amazing music. If you have always wanted to experience the original Tomb Raider but are put off by the dated visuals and tank controls this game right here will help out with that. 9/10 would purchase again.

Fun exploration that takes up the majority of the time playing the game. Combat leaves a lot to be desired. Graphically still holds up due to its stylized artstyle. There is a decent amount of replayability in time trials that unlock cheat codes(Remember those?), extra outfits found through collectibles, among other extras. It can be glitchy and frustrating when you need to execute precise moves in a short amount of time but the game has extremely fast load times and lots of checkpoints, so it won't be too much to bear.

Overall positive experience with some annoying elements thrown in.

Tomb Raider is one of my favorite video game series, especially the Legend and Anniversary titles. I’d already played Anniversary on the consoles and picked up this version (Steam) to revisit it.

Unfortunately, what is a great game is marred by a not-so-great port. Yes, I do have 17 hours of playtime, but that's mainly due to me being stubborn and powering my way through the game instead of just stopping and uninstalling it.

The majority of the game works fine, but there are some issues that make it frustrating to play through:

1. Ledge grabs that should have landed are sometimes missed, resulting in Lara plummeting to her death.

2. Jumps sometimes don’t trigger correctly. Two examples: in the second to last stage, The Great Pyramid, there’s a jump in the large room with timed platforms that requires landing on an incline and jumping off before sliding down. The game seems to not register the button press sometimes, and Lara slides off and into the lava pit below. Another example is in the same level but later on. A jump requires clearing a small lava stream just at the edge of a cliff to grab on a ladder. If you jump right from the edge, the game registers that as stepping in the lava flow and results in an instant death. Additionally, Lara sometimes doesn’t grab the ladder even though the jump takes her right against it, and she falls into the lava below.

3. Bugs. There’s a pretty nasty one in the second Egypt level that results in the grappling hook not catching on a platform necessary to proceed. This can be bypassed by going into manual aim mode (right-stick click if you’re playing on a gamepad) and aiming at the platform, however, if one doesn’t know about this, it can seem like a game-breaking bug.

4. Save slot issue. This requires renaming your manual save file to the autosave filename. If this isn’t done, then the game doesn’t allow you to resume from where you left off.

5. Camera. I know camera tech has come quite a ways since 2007, so some of the issues, such as the camera zooming in too close and preventing being able to see the environment, are expected. However, for this version, the sensitivity was quite high, and changing the settings didn’t seem to affect it.

Unfortunately, with the above issues, I really can’t recommend the PC version of this game. If you’re not able to play any of the console releases, then this version can function as a last resort to play this title.

Disclaimer: I'm not a longtime fan of the series. I played the demo of the original first Tomb Raider as a kid, but no more. I recently played Tomb Raider 2013 & Rise and liked them a lot and figured I'd try some earlier games. With that out of the way. If you are looking for a frustration-free experience - this isn't it. There is a lot of frustration in this game, particularly in the controls. However, if you can push past this this game has some really quite amazing levels, particularly in the middle-early late game. Really good puzzles and platforming. Oh, and do yourself a favour and don't shore up ammo for the boss fights because it's completely meaningless, it's all decided via the adrenaline dodge (look it up on youtube, the game doesn't explain it well) so use up your ammo on regular enemies. Also remember to turn on V-synch as that will get rid of the majority of the bugs the game has. I had a really good (though at times frustrating) time with this. I was able to complete the game.

A very good remake of the original title which was released back in 1996. I loved how they managed to keep the soul of the original game while revamping the visuals completely. Also, I have to point out one of the most important aspects of this game. The level design in this game is just amazing. The developers really know how to make a good level design. It's also worth mentioning that the soundtracks were amazing too. Beatiful game in my opinion. I am giving it 8/10 score.

I've played this game OUT of Steam a couple of times on other devices (PSP, other PC with CD ...) and it really is a unique remake, but this is a review for the STEAM VERSION itself:
90% of people can't go through the game without encountering a game-breaker bug. It's not even something that kinda bothers but you pass the level and it's gone. It's always something that doesn't 'actually' let you go through it. For some people it's right in launch set, for others it's when you've invested 15 hours of gameplay and a certain level is forever doomed not to work.
For me, it was a movement/controls issue. Combat mode locks a direction even when I'm not pressing any keys and Lara usually just falls off an edge and dies because I can't control her run. First enemies you get can be ignored into this, but when you start placing encounters on delicate steep ruins, there's no way around it.

It is a very complete game and it pains me to let it go because of this, but I've really tried everything and I'm just gonna hope my other old wooden pc doesn't fail me on running the original CD I have from when I was a kid.

This game started out as the perfect Tomb Raider game. It had some OK combat, and some extremely challenging platforming puzzles that you could figure out eventually. However things really went off the rails in the latter half of the game.

In the Obelisk of Khamoon, one of the required jumps is bugged to the point that the only way to pass that particular room is to execute a frame-perfect grapple to the center of the room that definitely shouldn't work.

In the Great Pyramid, the central room consists of a bunch of platforms on the walls where you need to fight some flying enemies occasionally. These are annoying, but manageable. Then there's a platforming segment where you need to jump onto a slope, and then immediately jump backward onto poles that you need to swing around in a particular combination, and you have a very small window of time to do this. The slope jump is punishingly precise, and the swinging poles are bugged to the extent that if you try to do it at the required speed, you'll find yourself swinging into the wall, which makes absolutely no sense.

More often than not you're going to find yourself looking at a bug and wondering if (a) you're just missing the intended solution, or (b) the game is broken and you can no longer progress. This leads to an intensely unsatisfying experience when you eventually can't finish the game.

Graphics fine, story passable, level design great, music okay, combat system meh, bugs intolerable and game-breaking. I wouldn't get this game unless it's in a huge bundle deal for 90% off at least.

This is what Tomb Raider is all about! Ever since I was old enough to use a computer, Tomb Raider managed to capture me, and pull me into one adventure after another, with Lara Croft. From the very beginning in 1996, forever and always! A Tomb Raider fan-girl at heart!

Yes I know, Tomb Raider: Anniversary is starting to look a touch dated in comparison to recent releases of the franchise. However that dun keep me away! This remake of the 1996 original, captures everything Lara Croft is all about. That is not to say I do not like the more recent Tomb Raider games. In fact I think Crystal Dynamics over the last decade, has done an amazing job, keeping our beloved Lara Croft, (and I) on our tip toes! However were I to pick just one Tomb Raider game, it would without a sliver of doubt be this one.

This is Lara Croft as we know her,
and I will join her any day, for a new adventure! <3

Reading the original reviews for the original release, you'll be vindicated that Lara's janky controls and a particularly vile camera Aren't Just You. If you can get nostalgia from this game, it might be worth a sale, but otherwise its a good spectacle of a studio making a game they never intended to (Crystal Dynamics was forced by Eidos to do this remake after Core Design couldn't finish theirs), with an engine not designed for it (Legend's engine was made for more linear maps, and the controls / camera shows), and rushed in between 2 other releases (Legend and Underworld). Even if you're in it for the nostalgia, the controls and complete asshole of a camera will surely make you want to snap a controller and keyboard in half several times per level.

Amidst other things that weren't QA'ed properly in this game is a poorly thought-out check point system, that much like the tricky platform sections, assumes you have nothing better to do except jump through the same hoops over and over and over in hopes that the final jump will register your inputs correctly this time, or that camera won't randomly fishtail just before the jump and cause your death (yet again). A game like this that has difficult platforming and absurdly placed check-points, yet lacks the tight controls and out-of-the-way camera required to allow a player to use their skills unimpeded, is a game that simply disrespects and wastes the player's time. Trust me, these frustrations will steadily get worse as the game progresses, leaving you with sunken cost fallacy. Life is short, go play something that was better made.

A good example of what a Remake should be. The way this game puts Legend´s Mechanics while also taking a few liberties with Tomb Raider 1´s Amazing level design into a blender is just genius! I wish there were more Tomb Raider Remakes or Re-Imaginings like this. Great game and a good remake and honestly, I can´t recommend it enough when the game is on sale. Worth the 97 cents!

good to play the story again with better graphics, enjoyed the game but found some of Egypt really frustrating to the point I wanted to smash stuff, don't remember being that annoyed when I played the old version on my PS1, precision control with movements and button pressing is needed later in the game, forgot how difficult old games used to be and at times how frustrating. played on windows 10 64, Ryzen 7 3800x CPU, 5700 XT GPU, 64GB Ram 2400, works with no bugs from beginning to end, played March 2021.

Occasionally it's good. But it's neither as complex and subtle as the original, nor fun and varied as Legend.

Locations are simplified and streamlined, and the game doesn't play with imagination like the original used to. Cutscenes and Lara with villains in them are kind of meh. Anniversary doesn't follow anything Legend set up - neither story-wise, nor stylistically. The same goes for the music, very bland. Pacing is too monotone as well, and it's a step down from Legend.

The game itself plays nicely and there are some nice sections, though. Croft manor is fun.

But I can't stop thinking about what could've been. There was a dispute between Core Design and Crystal Dynamics on whom should produce the remake. I see it as a business decision (maybe specifically to damage the rival) and not a creative one. In the end Core lost and now it's dead. In the mean time Crystal Dynamics was split into two teams, one was developing Anniversary, the other - Underworld. Two games, planned to release for several platforms each, both produced in very tight schedule. I think it hurt both games in the end. Anniversary is rushed and kind of shallow, while Underworld is short, unpolished and kind of unfinished. It was even evident in pre-release trailers and other coverage as well, as everything about Underworld was plain and unexciting.

Here's the thing. I think I would've been fine with the Core remake, or if the remake has never happened at all. The original TR (that is still argueably better in some aspects) is still here, I can play it anytime I want.

Underworld was very promising, a great game even at the state it was released. But I wish Crystal Dynamics could dedicate its entire effort to Underworld, and the game was larger, better and more polished. It hurt TR in the long run as well, as Underworld hasn't sold well. And then the reboot with its sequels happened, for better or worse - it's up to you to decide.

Despite being the second installment in the Tomb Raider: Legend timeline, Anniversary is actually a prequel of Legend, so it might be a good idea to play this one first. Moreover, Anniversary is actually a remake of the first, original 1996 Tomb Raider game, in a rare occurrence where a game is officially remade rather than a simple remaster. This game features the same levels, characters, and stories, but enhanced to make them more realistic, believable, and modern. The ruins of ancient civilizations explored by Lara Croft looks beautiful here. There is also a free-roam Croft Manor, which is a bonus level and showcases relics you collected.

If you came here after being a fan of the reboot TR games, be warned that this one and probably all older titles play quite differently. Anniversary is really puzzle-and-platforming-heavy, unlike the story-heavy newer games. During levels you just solve one puzzle after another, with occasional combat and boss fights that are basically just shooting and dodging. If you didn't enjoy the puzzle-platforming sections in the newer TR games, you might not enjoy this game. The levels are like one challenge tombs after another, if you want to compare it with the newer titles.

The thing I hate about this game is some platforming sections are really difficult, especially doing the backwards jump from a grapple. The fact that you can only load at checkpoints didn't help either. There are numerous times where I have to redo quite some long sections of a puzzle because I died midway. I think the amount of times I died in this game is equal, or maybe more than all my deaths in platforming sections of all 3 reboot TR games. Also, the saves are kinda buggy, I made a guide to fix that here: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2398904133

Still, I think Tomb Raider: Anniversary is a great game, since it offers the original Tomb Raider experience, but modernized, looks, and plays better. You don't have to install compatibility mods and see old blocky graphics. The Legend timeline is the second most recent TR game series, so if you want more TR after the reboot series, try the Legend games.

As someone who played the original as a child, this was quite nostalgic for me. This game does what a remake should do, it improves upon and updates the original. It doesn't try to replace it, just make it more accessible to the modern gamer.
As far as the story goes, it follows the original pretty much beat for beat, which is interesting considering this is supposed to be a sequel to Tomb Raider: Legend. I feel that this game serves better as a remake to the original Tomb Raider than it does as a sequel to Legend though, since characters from Legend are simply dropped and ignored so that this game can be like the original. However, events from this game are mentioned in the next installment, Tomb Raider: Underworld.
The gameplay is more of what you're used to if you played Legend, and different but familiar if you only played the original Tomb Raider. Lara is back for some more parkour, gun fights, and exploration. Just what you would expect. The music (especially the menu and Croft Manor themes) are great, and the visuals are also very nice. The story is pretty intriguing, and has some fantastical elements to it.
I will point out that I ran into one or two bugs related to having an unlocked framerate, but lowering to 60fps for those sections fixed it for me. It wasn't nearly as common as the framerate issues in some games.
Overall, this is an excellent game for Tomb Raider fans.

Far from flawless port, but if you can look past the sometimes wonky ledge grab-boxes (hitboxes?) and honestly kind of bad combat, it's a pretty great game. Be prepared to repeat platforming puzzles a few times until you figure out how to get them right, some people will love that, and some will hate it.

Amazing remake of a legendary game. Main thing you need to know, this is not a direct remake, it's more of a reimagining. Most of the changes were in levels, and the story was largely unchanged. If you want to feel nostalgic about the good old days, this game is the perfect solution.

Pros:
- Smooth controls;
- Good graphics;
- Good puzzles design;
- Classic game in modern wrap;

Cons:
- Over reliance on QTEs;
- Some levels too simplified;

I began playing through the original game just prior to this and it follows pretty closely, combining a mix of Prince of Persia platforming with decent gun play and exploration. It's worth playing both games IMO but if you've only got time for one make it this for sure. Highly recommended.

I have played this game on the Wii and the PS2, the PC version is by far the most buggy. The worst of it has been the enemy path-finding; they often just run into a wall, making combat completely boring.

I love the game though, it's not as good as legend but if you have nostalgia for the series you'll enjoy this remake. Just try and find it on a console.

Edit: It's masochism. There are parts that are so buggy they're near broken. I don't know why I haven't stopped playing.

This is a remake of the first Tomb Raider in a (for 2007) modern engine. It stays pretty faithful to the original game and hits all of the major story beats with less janky controls, some streamlining in certain areas, and more modernised platforming and combat. For any Tomb Raider fan I would highly recommend it, as the 1996 game has aged very poorly, and none of the changes in Anniversary detract from the vision of the original.

It works absolutely fine on Windows 10 with a modern PC setup, in case anybody is concerned about that. I would also recommend not using anti-aliasing, because it causes shadows and various other effects to disappear or not work as intended.

A bit too janky for my expectations today but otherwise it's good to reminisce. (middle thumb)

the game is actually good, but the control is really difficult, its really buggy for me, and the checkpoint in this game is so bad.
When you have been done in some difficult place and got checkpoint, and then you got fall without death and in there you wanna death to go through the last checkpoint but you cant find that way. And then you just walk away searching the place for dead but suddenly you got checkpoint again.
And then you must replay it again through that difficult place again.

The graphics, of course aren't like the newest games from the Tomb Rider franchise.
But I can't believe I'm starting a new game after
finishing the game few months ago. This game is so good, it brings so many memories, in fact the first Tomb Raider I've ever played was the demo of the Anniversary back in 2008.

I've played this game multiple times on PS2, Xbox 360, PS3 and the non-Steam PC version. To me this still is the best Tomb Raider game to this day, despite the camera requiring some getting used to as it follows Lara around as soon as you tilt the left analog stick. I recommend disabling anti-aliasing in game as it turns off shadows. You can enable it through your drivers though. Works great with an Xbox One controller. I can't confirm the glitches some people are reporting.

Great game; possibly the best of the series!
Totally worth your time and money!
It might even seem endless to you, due to the multiple and vast stages it has.
No glitches or major bugs for me. Keep trying and you will be rewarded!
Feeds your nostalgia as well ;)

Recommended but it's only a sort of half hearted recommendation. It worked better than Legend but not nearly as good as Underworld. Also whilst my own game was MOSTLY free of bugs, my husband, who was playing the game at the same time, encountered a whole ton of bugs that at times made the game unplayable. Thus, shout out to Stella's Tomb Raider Guides for walkthroughs and savegames for when things were bugged to all shit.

The story is passable, though I feel that's too much in between story segments, and also I started unlocking things about characters I hadn't even met yet. There's not really any cheesy dialogue that I noticed and the game does a sort of alright attempt at Lara's trauma in the later game which kind of adds depth to her.

The puzzles were good though at times a bit repetitive, there's multiple puzzles involving changing the water level and climbing up and down a ladder and jumping from ledge to ledge isn't exactly fun when you've got to use the same path multiple times. One bug that my husband encountered (and is apparently a known bug) is the grapple attaching to the wrong side of a block causing it to fall wrong and meaning you cannot progress the level as there's no way to turn it round. Obviously just reloading the checkpoint fixes this, but why is this even a possibility anyway?

Grappling in general was a bit of an issue that I encountered. Occasionally Lara will throw the grapple out and it just won't attach and she usually goes plummeting to her death. Grapple wall runs are hit or miss as for whatever reason it thinks a different directional button needs to be pressed and Lara goes jumping off in the wrong direction. This combined with camera angle changes are infuriating in certain puzzles, especially if it's timed. Grapples and certain ledges were occasionally straight up not recognised, though manually turning v-sync on in the NVIDIA Control Panel seemed to fix it (this was a thing we also had to do for Underworld.)

Enemies in the early game seem to get caught on random walls though I encountered this less later. The whole slow-mo dodge thing is really not good. Works alright if it's a boss fight, but I rarely got it to work against normal enemies ESPECIALLY when there's multiple enemies you are fighting. The target lock system really doesn't help here because it just targets the enemy who is not charging and messes it all up. There is a particular boss fight where the boss can just bug out and stand frozen in the middle of the arena. This is unfortunately the same boss fight which requires the grapple and the grapple can bug out too and just not do what it's meant to.

My husband also encountered an issue with the autosave corrupting so if you don't have a recent manual save, you are going to be repeating levels. The issue was caused by Lara not dying from a fall and inexplicably getting caught on a small ledge but unable to move. Exiting out of the game and reopening it didn't fix it as the autosave had somehow corrupted because of this. This was not the greatest, obviously. Thankfully Stella's Tomb Raiders has savegames available from different points in the level, allowing him to return to the checkpoint he was at without having to replay it.

tbh at certain points in the game the whole thing became just not enjoyable and yet other times it was much better. Overall they probably averaged each other out leaving the game just average.

Having originally played this on the Playstation 2, replaying it on seem brought on some real nostalgia, the game surprisingly holds up compared to modern games, while the graphics are slightly dated, the good mechanics and fun puzzles more than make up for it. The story is also quite interesting and really ties in with Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Underworld. I definitely recommend playing them.

This is somehow even more clunky than CORE Design's Tomb Raider. Yes the original had tank controls, yes the keyboard controls took some getting used to, but once you had you were in full control of Lara. In Anniversary it's almost like she's wrestling the controls away from you. That on top of glitches make the platforming sections a chore. The combat is hot garbage, blast enemies until the bar fills, dodge and shoot the weak spot until dead. The boss fights are tragic, the iconic T-Rex fight is won by pulling off a QTE after getting it to slam into a wall multiple times.

The best thing you could say about Anniversary is that it's pretty, because It is really nice to see some of the more intense moments from the original rendered in high definition and modelled in a way that doesn't make everything look like it's made out of paper mache and craft paper.

It really is hard to recommend this over the other Tomb Raider games. If you want more of combat focused Tomb Raider? You've got the 2013 reboot series. If you're more into exploration and puzzles? Then you may as well stick with the originals.

Just play it, Anniversary, Legend and Underworld is the best trilogy out of them all. Don't get me wrong, I like the older and newer Tomb Raider's, but I played this trilogy back in high school when they first came out and I fell in love. Legend Lara is my favorite Lara though. Always has been and always will be. I heard rumors of another Tomb Raider coming within the next few years. Hopefully they bring back the real Lara.

The golden child of the Legend Trilogy. Intriguing story, top notch level design, balanced combat and fun boss battles that are not simply hold shoot and wait 2 minutes.

Definitely recommend buying this game, especially since it does not require playing Legend first, or continuing the story with Underworld since it's mostly a tie-in. Decent play time as well (9 hours for 100% including time trials, but I have played this game twice before so a first time could easily put in 13-15 hours).

Lara is not a survivor nor a peasant here. It is about having the classic Lara and classic adventures without the requirement of pixel graphics. Hardest thing you will face inside is figuring out the best possible key settings for yourself. Because of that, finish the Croft Manor challenges before stepping inside real adventure. There is a meaningful reward for each artifact&relic you happen to dredge up.

Those who only care for graphics and QTEs should not exist here, not even in Manor. :LCTOO_LaraCroft:
