Absolut Hammer! Richtig geiles VR Game.

This is honestly a pretty neat little horror game to start with if you're wanting to get into thrillers. The setting and the plot were very interesting to look into. The subtle hints that are given to you throughout the game as you explore the household of this dysfunctional family--through all three members of the family--is on all counts disturbing and heartbreaking. Although, it was kind of annoying to be walking back and forth trying to figure out what the heck I was supposed to be doing. The puzzles themselves were a bit of a challenge to get through, and I'm genuinely amazed that I managed to figure it all out in a matter of a little over 2 hours and without any sort of walkthrough. I feel like there's a bit of symbolism with some of the horror-filled imagery, particularly with that black pixelated demon thingy you encounter every once in a while...maybe it's an allusion to the insanity that plagues Ray to the point he...does something irreversible?? IDK just throwing this out there.

Overall, I think I'd give this game like a 7.5/10. It's not the greatest game EVER, but it was enjoyable to play. It's a nice start if you're wanting to get into thriller-type games.

PS: Why the hell is the Raymond trading card so damn expensive?!

I played it in VR
TLDR: looks and sounds cool, had potential but plays not amazingly and had less than mediocre writing

Now I kinda get why it has mixed reviews.
The good: It has cool looking aesthetics (I love the glitch style it has going on) and very great sound design.

That's about it. The actual game design is kinda whacky at times, I found myself looking at walkthroughs like 3 times. Not very fulfilling but eh... It had a handful of jump scares, most of them I could see coming and joke my way out of but oof jumpscares just plain suck tbh. The story is delivered through voice lines and video logs that play throughout the game but it felt kinda obsolete. I cringed at the writing pretty often.

You can tell that it was just a game being developed for PC and VR was kinda just a bonus because I felt besides experiencing the scale (which was off often) and immersion, it didn't use much of VR's potential. Also idk if it was a VR glitch but the whole world was always tilted by 5°-ish (which I never had in other VR games). Made me pretty motion-sick and I had to pause a few times and it took me double the amount of time to play than average playtime because of the inconveniences in VR.

Kinda lame, kinda boring. Unappealing family drama I couldn't care less about. Bad visuals in VR with objects having wrong real world scaling.. some look tiny, some look huge. Horrible VR controls. Walking barely function, picking up stuff is off... Just an underwhelming experience all around. Perhaps it's better on flat screen. Don't pick this one up if you're looking for an immersive VR experience.

a pretty underwhelming experience with mediocre story, some cool visuals, little to no thriller factor, and bad acting.
also, it's really short, in my playtime i completed it twice, and watched all the video logs. (went back for the collectibles to 100% it.)

My biggest problem is that the title simply awakens the appetite for more, mainly because the credits appear after about two hours. PS VR is a great tool for learning about horror movies and it is a pity that SpectreVision did not attempt to prepare a slightly larger, more extensive and complex production. It is still an experience worth becoming familiar with. Especially if you put the atmosphere in the foreground and you like to explore multi-layered scenarios.

Loved the game on PSVR (DualShock 4 support only), but wanted to give it a try on PC because of its Touch controller support. Well, rarely have I seen more limited on board options regarding VR controls (there might be a way to adjust this with Steam's control settings).

Story and presentation are great and the graphics are more crisp, but for me the clunky controls make it a pain to play in VR. The fact that you need UPlay/Ubisoft Connect and that you always have to switch to VR mode (restart included) doesn't help either, if you aim for a quick horror session. The unskippable publisher logo intro and the game often times freezing on the second warning text were my tipping point to just stay away from this one.

Sadly, because I know that it is an unnecessary obstacle in front of an otherwise good game.

Okay, so yeah it was 2hrs. An yep, it usually costs $25 (??!), but I picked it up for $5 so that's the context I'm going to review it in. Also, this is a quick experience, so I'm going to give a quick review :P

I really really enjoyed this experience (not...game) and I think it's definitely worth spending $5 on. I won't go into the story at all, but I'll say that it's well-trod ground but done in a way that I didn't find contrived or unoriginal. The whole work is like an extended metaphor in terms of its mechanics and environment (which, again, don't want to spoil) and while I didn't find it overwhelmingly terrifying or anything, I did find the atmosphere pretty awesome and at times near-overwhelming because of the narrative themes.

I'll put it this way: these are the people that made Mandy and The Color Out Of Space (yeah, those Nic Cage movies) and if you haven't seen those, you should -- and if you liked those movies, you'll probably dig what they're doing here. Definitely not as crazy as either film, but it's just...really mature, unnerving, and haunting and I'm really glad it exists.

Oh, and it has to be mentioned that the controls were JANKY AS ALL HELL for me (Oculus Quest 2 w/ Virtual Desktop). I got through it alright, but definitely detracted from the experience a little bit.

So, overall, while not the greatest thing to ever happen, it's still something I'm going to be thinking about for a long time and clearly made with a ton of love -- based on that, I'll give it a 8.75/10. Better than a solid B, but not quite an A- (but definitely a piece of art worth your attention).

For clarity, I played in desktop mode. I have no doubt VR is more immersive, but the game was definitely a ride, regardless.

The few cons Ill mention first:
The other reviews arent lying(especially the ones that say 'they arent lying'): This game is s h o r t. I dragged my feet a bunch, and replayed it a couple of times to boot, and I have 100 percent it.

It has a few jump scares here and there, so be aware of that, should that not be your thing. Also, your character needs some caffeine or something, because they sure are slooooooooow. If backtracking because of mistakes or missing something pisses you off, this game will too.

Thats said, its an interesting premise, and if you like escape room games, this one wont disappoint. The puzzles are just enough to entertain, but this definitely is more 'walking simulator' territory. As long as you search everything youll be ok.

The acting in the FMVs can be kind of hit or miss, but it gets the job done, especially for a game that has a story reliant on the player to fill in the gaps. The audio and video logs add a decent bit of backstory for characters you barely even see. Grab it on sale and you'll find its a slick-lookin spooky game easily beat in a single session. Just dont expect anything with an amazing amount of replay value if you take your time searching everything as you go.

Discount price? Yes would recommend (at the time of writing its 5 bucks). Any other time no.

Pros:
-doesnt rely on jumpscares. most of the time, i was tip toeing wondering when the next spooky thing is happening.
-puzzles were roughly the right difficulty, not too hard, not too easy.
-level of detail is definitely up there

Cons:
-being forced into seating mode and having to use the trackpad to adjust height was atrocious (and this is someone whos willing to hop into bindings and do the fix himself).
-the auto playspace made movement very uncomfortable and also would reset the default facing of my character...this should honestly be an option not a requirement.

Due to it's story it's understandable that for many players, Transference stands in direct comparison to SOMA. Both are psychological SciFi POV experiences.
Transference isn't as twisted as it wants to be, I think. The Story is still interesting enough to want to reach the end, the presentation is great and in VR it intensifies the mysterious world.
It's a 2 hours, one session playthrough game and that's very comfortable for a VR game.

Played on Oculus Quest 1+Link.

Bought this on sale, figuring I could use another short spooky game. Nope, not worth it. It is riddled with technical problems both big and small. Bad VR design, bad game design, bad horror writing. The performances are ok, if you ignore the cliche lines they're reading. The glitch horror aesthetic is promising, but the execution here is barebones and unexplored. The plot is threadbare and contradictory. There are very few puzzles, and they are either so simple as to not be puzzles, or plagued by red herrings that will make you give up in frustration. There is not one satisfying puzzle in the entire game. I'm almost certain the hourglass puzzle is actually broken, and only barely complete-able due to animation bugs.

Now I'll just list technical problems I encountered:

The game requires you to enable VR from a desktop mode menu. This is not explained anywhere. When you do this, the game might have a sloped floor until you restart the game.

The game takes a long time to load, even off of an SSD.

The snap turning doesn't have a real 45 degree turn. Face a wall head-on, and snap turn a full 360, and you are slightly off from where you start. The angle is adjustable, but no number is shown. No setting will let you stay aligned with the walls of a room.

When grabbing objects out of low cupboards, the floor height gets reset and you will be above the cabinet.

The credits scroll by extremely fast at about 2 feet away from your face. This is uncomfortable.

Transference is another game I'm going to recommend but will be truthful in saying it 100% comes with a number of caveats to be aware of. The general plot involves your character entering a computer glitch world sort of simulation to find out what happened to a researcher's family. Using the game's main mechanic of switching between the different viewpoints of the characters you're are looking for, you enter their apartment to search for clues and piece together what happened.

I didn't play this in VR but as far as playing this normally went I have to say Transference has a pretty striking visual/audio design. There's better out there but the immersive atmosphere is boiling over with dread and weird digital, blue-screen hallucination madness. You are confined to a fairly small area; namely an apartment building with a focus on the suite the family you are looking for once inhabited. I felt tense while playing this one even when I realized there was no direct threat on the prowl to turn me into a mince-meat of bits and bytes. Played in complete blackness with headphones and the foreboding level design in your ears and eyes respectively, Transference was pretty pleasing in terms of presentation. Similarities to Bloober Team's work and even Frictional Games' (namely SOMA) are apparent though I feel Spectrevision and Ubisoft did a darn good job of giving the game it's own specific feel.

For the most part you're looking for videos and audio files to unravel the story, searching for documents for puzzle clues and slowly wandering around the settings. There's not a lot of actions to perform other than crouching or interacting, thusly meaning your character is set in cement by a slow-paced walk that never kicks up a speck of dust. Despite this a large number of objects to interact with kept the proceedings fairly interesting.

On the negative side though if you're used to these kinds of games, you can pretty much tag n' bag everything that you need in a single playthrough (which took 2 hours for me). None of the puzzles or fetch quests required too much brain-power and although I felt fairly enthralled by the exploration and discovery a little more challenge would have been nice. I do understand that they were going for a movie like experience but with a fair amount of interactive examination allowed it would have been nice if there were a few more complexities to the gameplay.

One thing I truly enjoyed in the game was the inclusion of FMV sequences for all of the videos that you find to tell the story. Unfortunately these parts have acting of various degrees of quality. A couple of the sequences were actually pretty intense (involving themes of abuse and familial dysfunction). It seemed that the story segments with multiple characters were much, much stronger than any of the cast's acting when it came time to perform a solo part. With the game trying to tackle some heavy-handed horror tropes it's a shame that the quality isn't there in each video for such a short experience. Still, I have a soft spot for old FMV games and overall I enjoyed what's there...just more solid acting would have helped out a lot.

Though I usually prefer some type of threat in my horror experiences, sometimes a game pulls off what it's trying to do better without one. I felt that Transference was fine without the possibility of dying...that element giving it some shades of a darker take on Tacoma or even Firewatch or Dear Esther.

I enjoyed the story overall but I would have liked to see more build-up. What's there is good yet for a $25 game, a two hour experience is pretty meager and there's not a lot of reason to make the journey a second time. Though I will say that I'll remember my time spent with due to the quality of the environment design and first-rate sound effects. Full disclosure, I bought the game on sale and as it stands I got enough for my money that I can recommend it. Would I recommend it for $25? Eh, probably not. I need more of an experience for that price. For $10-15? Yeah, I'd say go for it.

Spent around two hours trying to load the damn game. Ubisoft's Uplay may have been the culprit but I literally tried everything. Refunded the game, wish I could refund my lost time. Will be avoiding anything Ubisoft is involved with, as usual.

way too short and absolutely not worth your money. For 5 bucks, maybe.

Very cool game. Especially in VR it was really unnerving and sometimes really terrifying. The story was mysterious and the game was definitely worth it. I just suggest you get it on sale since it is just about 3 hours long, but againvery much worth it.

The only reason I would not give it a perfect 10 is because Ubisoft requires you to play it through their uplay app. When you buy it off steam you should be able to play it in steam VR and not through yet another app, which causes extra work to set it up, link the accounts (steam and uplay) and run everything. Then when you have it set up you have to start the game in non-vr and go to settings to activate it. Not the end of the world, but certainly not fun to do all of those extra steps. Other than than really enjoyed the game.

This game is garbge. It took me around half an hour to get the game to launch just to find out that it only wants my keyboard as input. Vive controllers do not working with this game. I know ubisoft usually makes shitty bug filled games but this is way worse than I ever thought possible. The game is not even playable

Well, so far I haven't been able to play it because UbiSoft requires a UPLAY account but doesn't seem to be able to create a new account. Seems pretty crap.

Too much fannying around with the interference of the Ubisoft UI, Ts & Cs, updates etc. Then having to log in ti Ubisoft and THEN find yourself having to restart the VR system to progress. It's not the first time it has been run either.

Once in, it's pretty good.

This is enjoyable and creepy. At under 2 hours though, it is waay too short for £21.

Catch it on sale. Or devs reduce the price.

VR enthusiasts beware.
Maybe it's a fun game, but after spending about an hour and a half in the game I had enough. Movement is a big deal in VR, and not being able to move in any direction other than the one you're looking at gets frustrating. Unless you're OK with crawling. In the end I got stuck in the floor. I reset the position, but it just happened again. And again. Had enough.
If you're a VR enthusiast like me, don't bother

There is so much potential in VR horror but this game just doesn't really take advantage of any of it. It's just another 2D horror game with VR afterthought.

If you are looking for a spooky vr game this is not it. Using the vr controls are horrible and are not the recommend way to play, just use a controller. It is so short that the 25$ price tag is way to much, even the promotion i have at the time of purchase is to much (witch is 10$).

Voted up because the game itself is a solid experience... but it's vastly overpriced. It's only 2 hours long or so. There's some collectable audio and video tracks that are pretty good but you can just look those up on youtube and not waste time hunting the environments for them. Based on the length I would say look for it around €5.

It's also got a lot of the weird early-VR problems like poor controls and weird object interaction. Not enough to hamper the experience though. It is very atmospheric and has a cool story.

I wouldn't pay $25.00 for this. The production values are good, but not much else is.

If you've played many psychological horror games, you're probably familiar with how many of them work. You wander around through an environment with some creepy ambient sound and visuals. Sometimes there are jumpscares, but rarely anything that can actually threaten your ability to progress. And your goal in each section of the game is to find a trigger or a switch that will allow you to progress to the next session through all of the creepy noise. What really carries a game of this kind is the quality of the puzzles, the story, and the creepy noise.

A good psychological horror game will give you real puzzles, but too often in Transference your challenge goal is to find a lightswitch, or to carry an object from one area to another. There are few real challenges.

The story is vague, perhaps purposefully so. You're exploring a digital recreation of an apartment, which is made hard to navigate because of glitches and missing data. Said recreation is divided into multiple parts, one for each of the family members who used to live there. But there's no information about who *you* are, what the glitch-demon-thing that stalks the apartment is, or even what you're accomplishing by fixing this place up. I found it hard to feel invested when my own role in the story is so unclear.

On top of it all the game is very short. Barely long enough for you to experience it all and still pass the threshold for a Steam return.

Don't buy this game if you don't have a VR. I finished it in less than 3 hours and I feel deeply disappointed. Story, puzzles, music, characters, environment, everything could be 1000 times more profound than this... This game is naive, it feels like playing a demo and it lasts far too soon.. I'm not a guy who loves to write bad reviews. Considering all my xbox360, pc and ps4 library I've left 3 bad ones and this is one of those.. MAYBE, if you have VR, this game has some sense.... if you don't, you're wasting your money...

VR Video Review Here: https://youtu.be/BJTxpy-XvFk

Summary: The best way to look at this is like an interactive movie. Its short (around 2 hours) but very very sweet. Stunning graphics, some of the best in VR. Interesting story and a very trippy ride. Once I started playing I couldn't stop and wanted to see it to the end.

A few light puzzle but nothing to difficult, a couple of little jump scares but I wouldn't describe it as a horror game.

Bizar virtual reality themed scifi/thriller story.

It's basically a trippy walking simulator with some mild puzzling. Nothing really special in these regards. What it does stand out for, in my opinion, is the whole take on this virtual reality transference setting, which goes just a little beyond the usual mind-transfer type of vr-world stories.

There's no real in your face horror apart from a few jump scares, but the psychologic horror tag is indeed quite fitting. What happened to the family in this story is very unsettling.

I'd rate it reasonably high as an experience. As for replayablility, there's none except for discovering some vids/audio snippets you might have missed on the first run. The story itself is rather short as well. About three to four hours if you'd want to read and investigate literally every little detail.

Have played it on a normal monitor only so can't judge about the (real life) VR.
