Transmissions: Element 120

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2522206695
Es lohnt sich ein Durchspielen auf jeden Fall für alle HL 2-Fans, und weil es mir sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat, empfehle ich es !

What a heck, there was a Half-Life 2 mod which really kicks and found it by an accident? The game uses source-engine and it pretty much feels like an Half-Life 2 episode, but with a lot of good ideas to create more horrifying and intensive experience. For example there is a sequence where you need to turn off the lights before going in to the pit full of craw mutated head-crab zombies and the dev has taken the liberty that in this part of Half-Life reality zombies can't see in the dark where I was able to slowly use valve to open the door while zombies where all over me, but not taking aggressive contact, then I feeble-mindly pushed my flashlight on and hell broke loose :D

The whole tiny scenario is bumped up with all kind of other cool things as well and if I was to told Valve to hire these makers I definitely would. If this was a whole game and the quality would remain up through it I would call it Half-Life 2.5! Absolutely remarkable mod and it is Free to Play!

A perplexingly undiscovered short fan-made HL2 episode.
Don't come expecting things like voice acting but all the game's components weave a great experience. The quality is excellent, it's well polished.
Do expect a gloomy atmosphere for the 1hr+ gametime.
The new
mechanic

will make you feel at home if you're comfortable with

rocket jumping or air-strafing in the source engine
.

This is a really well made mod but a short one as well. I loved the idea of zombies not attacking in the dark and the gravity concussion gun, that was SO cool. I struggled with killing the last of the three striders in the final chapter, but that's probably due to my lack of skill. The game took all of 40 minutes to beat and if you like Half-Life crumbs you should really play it

This Half-Life mod is pretty good. It's short (under an hour) unless you are going for 100% (about 2 hours). For the people that don't like horror, like me, I was skeptical if I wanted to play it or not. I'm glad I did because it's not so much scary as it is environmentally dark. There are lots of neat things that are unique to this mod. I'd like to play more of this style of mod in the future. 7/10

The best free-to-play FPS game I have played so far. The graphics look great despite the game only using about 2 gigabytes of RAM and both the gameplay and controls are fast-paced and fluid. A good plus are the achievements that actually register to your Steam account achievements (unlike most free-to-play games which offer multitudes of achievements but they never register to your account once unlocked). Overall, this game is definitely [WORTH PLAYING].

'Veiled in the black of night'

As is often the case with Gordon Freeman, he’s deposited, without his consent or any prior warning, into a strange and hostile setting. The G-Man, whose words, though distorted by static, relay a familiar refrain: 'the right man in the wrong place can make all the difference…'

Whatever is ahead of us, we won’t be changing the world, then. But we may well be the catalyst for some nebulous goal our mysterious employer has set his eyes on.

Aren’t we always?

There is, briefly, a splash of colour. We wake, in what is fast becoming a cosmic joke played on one seriously put-upon theoretical physicist, in a train car. The tunnel where it's stalled is lit in a grungy yellow light, at the end of which is a neon blue Combine force-field and a spot of garish red lighting beyond it; savour it, for it’s the last of such colour.

The Combine have a presence here, but it’s not exactly clear where here even is, or the extent of our benefactors’ control over it. It looks like City 17, but with no Citadel in sight I guess we’re somewhere on the outskirts; perhaps a derelict suburb some distance from that city masquerading as a prison?

Or perhaps the events of Half-Life 2 have already concluded and the Citadel has fallen. Is this the shell of that former city-cum-prison? The Geiger counter is clickety-clicking – is it pointing us towards a specific source, or are we subject to the now irradiated ruins of City 17?

We do not know.

As we venture into its subterranean world, Transmissions: Element 120 morphs into something that looks less like City 17, and more like the noirish Vienna of Carol Reed’s The Third Man, carved up by the numerous occupying forces.

120’s desaturated colours infuse the urban ruins with a ghostly pallor, all muted blues and omnipresent industrial greys.

Light, or the lack of, will become vital to your survival. A group of freedom fighters once occupied the district’s suburbs, preparing for an attack on the local Combine forces that we can’t be sure ever came; they’re long gone by the time you reach their hideout.

In the dark they have painted phosphorescent green warnings, advising you that neither zombies nor turrets can see you in the murk, meaning for the first time in Half-Life the darkness at last serves rather than hinders you. It’s a clever piece of gameplay, utilising existing Half-Life 2 assets in fresh and original ways.

In one sequence you need to turn a crank in order to open a doorway, but it’s surrounded by a horde of zombies. In order to get down there and perform the deed, you’re going to need to switch off the lights; crouched below the crank, the horrid gargling of the half-dead all around me, I felt a palpable sense of dread – not a feeling I tend to acquaint with Half-Life, as I’m typically given license to plough through my enemies with a full arsenal. 120, keen to make you work for your victories, keeps ammo scarce.

The most interesting aspect of this smart mod, however, is its reimagined Gravity Gun – the Zero Point Energy Projector, which you can call it if you really want to – that allows you to propel yourself into the air and blast energy orbs at enemies. You’ll need to use it to launch yourself onto otherwise inaccessible catwalks carrying vital supplies and, come the end, thwart a trio of Striders – a set-piece that’s more creative than Valve’s subpar Strider boss fight at the end of Episode One. The fight takes place in an open space, but each potential shelter is vulnerable to the tripods’ attacks, and with rockets few and far between, you’ll need to find more inventive solutions to bring them down.

Whilst short – it comes in at an hour, probably less – Transmissions: Element 120 offers a unique and inspired take on Valve’s dystopian world. Although oblique in its narrative goals it deploys real ingenuity when it comes to environmental storytelling, relying on a succession of coded messages you’ll need the HEV suit to read, and a few other intriguing titbits as well, all of which seem to paint a picture of bitter tragedy.

Perhaps you’re the one to set it right. It may not make all the difference in the world, but to whoever occupied this crumbling industrial ruin, it might well have done.

Transmissions: Element 120 is a terrific piece of craftsmanship. Check it out.

Surprisingly good, solid modification, albeit it ends way too suddenly.
But I certainly had more fun within it's one hour of playthrough time
(and 1 more for all achievements)
than playing Valve's original works.
Honestly I feel like this is what original Half-life titles should've been. Gloomier, moodier and more sinister. Anyway wholeheartedly recommend!
If you always favored the gravity gun over Half-Life 2’s standard firearms, this is the mod for you.

Even beyond the upgraded gravity gun, Transmissions actually contains some very creative and engaging sequences, reminiscent of the action, drama, and even horror that originally drew us all to the world of Half-Life.

The Source modding community is still very much alive and kicking since 1998. The community has produced many great mods over the years - from birthing the Counter-Strike and Team Fortress series, to creating many popular HL2 mods - including The Stanley Parable, Black Mesa, Minerva: Metastasis and a myriad of other well-designed mods. From this, we arrive at Transmissions: Element 120 - a standalone Half-Life 2 mod that focuses on showcasing several new Source technologies.

Story

In Transmissions, the player assumes control of Gordon Freeman at an unknown time after Episode 2, travelling through an abandoned Resistance base in an unknown city for unknown reasons. The objective appears to be the retrieval of the Zero Point Energy Projector - an energy weapon that can launch both objects and the player long distances.

There isn't really a solid narrative on what is going on in Transmissions. There are some writings left behind by Resistance members that can be read, although they don't really come close to explaining what is happening. Given the short length of the mod, it could be argued that the lack of backstory is inconsequential. I disagree - although the lack of a story does make Transmissions slightly more eerie, adding in more narrative could have enhanced it further.

Gameplay

The main attraction in Transmissions are the many modifications to the Source engine - mostly concentrating on lighting, rendering, shading, and physics.

The dark and gloomy environments seen in the screenshots are a result of the new lighting system, which makes it easier to create pitch-black and low-light environments. In-game, these environments look amazing and combined with the level design, creates a desolate and eerie atmosphere. The dark environments also create new gameplay mechanics. One such mechanic relies on the fact that zombies and turrets cannot see the player in the dark and will therefore ignore them. It is a simple mechanic, but is used well in certain scenarios (to not spoil too much).

The main gameplay centrepiece of the mod is the Zero Point Energy Projector (ZPEP). Unlike the standard Gravity Gun, the ZPEP projects high-energy pellets that can launch props around the map. By aiming it at the floor, players can also launch themselves into the air, similar to the rocket jump in TF2. The ZPEP allows for the player to manipulate 'supermassive' objects (such as giant sewer pipes and other large props) to a degree that wouldn't be possible with the original Gravity Gun. The ZPEP also opens up the possibility of increased verticality in maps, allowing players to jump around rooftops rather than being confined to one level. This concept is only thoroughly explored in the finale, but it demonstrates it well (without spoiling anything).

I really like the gameplay mechanics of this mod, but I also can't help but feel that Transmissions is less than the sum of its parts. That is not to say it is bad - far from it. I say this because, to me, it feels more like a tech demo rather than a full-fledged mod. Concepts are often introduced, fleshed out a bit then quickly dumped in favour of the next one and never revisited again. For example, there are a few zombie and turret evasion puzzles before the concept is quickly dropped in order to show off the ZPEP, followed immediately by some demonstration of lock busters, before returning back to the ZPEP. The final fight gives players a playground to practice jumping in, then the mod quickly ends. I understand the difficulties of designing and developing good mods, and I appreciate all the behind-the-scenes work performed to facilitate this mod. But I cannot help but feel that even an extra hour of gameplay might have remediated some of the gameplay flaws. Currently, it can be completed in around 30 - 45 minutes at a moderate pace.

While it mostly runs without any issue, I did get some minor framerate drops in some large areas. Given the modifications to the Source engine this is to be somewhat expected, and the game runs perfectly otherwise.

Conclusion

While a lot of other reviewers call this the best HL2 mod, I have to disagree. I believe this is one of the best, but not the best. In comparison to other mods which have both great storytelling and a good amount of play time, this just doesn't stack up.

Still, Transmissions is still a very well-designed, unique and creative mod. It is one of the most atmospheric and visually stunning mods that I have played, The technical improvements (and mechanics they support) are very well done, and something that I would like to see a lot more of. All-in-all, a very good mod that it definitely worth a run through (or two).

A Short Half Life 2 mod with a brand new and fun game mechanic!

Transmissions: Element 120 is a modification for Half Life 2, assuming taking place in the same universe and playing as a unknown person who wakes up at a mysterious location and it's up to you to travel through the 4 chapters included in this small but polished package.

Gameplay is similar to the physics puzzle side of Half Life 2 campaign having quite a nice selection of scenarios that take advantage of the source engine's capabilities and certain AI behaviors. However, the biggest contender for new features in gameplay is the a brand new Gravity Gun that allows the player to just to amazing heights, thanks to a gravity ball that the gun shoots out. Once the gun is introduce the game features many puzzles based around this new gameplay but isn't always need to progress which give nice pacing during this short adventure.

Overall, Transmissions: Element 120 is another awesome short Half Life 2 mod that includes a new mechanic and a decently short campaign. The only think I would personally want from this mod is just more due to the short length. but I have to praise the developers for making this awesome mod and the fact that it's available right from Steam makes the mod so much more accessible.

Lovingly created and true to the feel of the Half Life franchise.

The detailed and immersive level design feels like every pipe, mattress and grate was placed with great care and thought.

The Element 120 concept is well thought out and executed. A brief backstory of the goings on can be found in the journal pages scattered across the 4 chapters.

I enjoyed the simple yet effective puzzles and the shoot outs were perfectly slotted in to break up the exploration.

Although quite short, it was easy to get 100% of the achievements and a real pleasure to step back into the dystopian world I love so much.

A perfect fit in the Half Life universe!

Great HL2 modification, which introduces new neat little features, that, when applied in one game, result in time well spent.
The mod is short, but also very beautiful, action-packed and diverse. I liked every part of it so much I've played it through twice already.

If you like source engine, Half-Life atmosphere, simple puzzles mixed with action. Go for it! It is a very short game, I've played it in a very slow pace and finished in about two hours and a half. Had a lot of fun, the game is incredible! Could be longer, but I know that for a little dev team, It was awesome! In my point of view, much more tense than half-life in some moments.

Short but well-crafted Half-Life 2 mod that really shows polish. Wish they expanded more on the gravity gun idea considering it's only really *required* in a few spots. The ending feels abrupt and also a bit cheap (the G-Man intro from HL2 just begins playing pretty much). Short fun, though.

Transmissions: Element 120 is an extremely short mod for half life 2 featuring everyone's favorite scientist Gordon Freeman, however..
The mod has so much interesting things going on and has many interesting mechanics. Some of which have a few problems. Here are a few examples under a spoiler tag so nobody gets spoiled.
-The new gravity defying weapon
-The writings you could only see by shining your flashlight on them then turning your flashlight off
-Things not being able to see you in the dark (this however has been severely misused on turrets since they use censors, not vision
Having many interesting mechanics and visuals making me wonder what was up next made me really disappointed after seeing that after getting the gravity defying weapon, it all kind of goes downhill as it pulls off some of the lamest things done in video games.
Like throwing a giant horde of zombies at you for the sake of having a combat sequence before you can progress with the story, it felt like it was made as long as it was for the sake of getting more playtime out of it
. Also the QR codes are ok I guess, and an original addition, but I didn't really care for it.

I did not finish the game, mainly because when I started playing the final chapter my game crashed near the end, I ended up looking up what happens next as, turns out that after you
kill a few of the most annoying synths in half life 2, striders, the game ends, also I hate striders and how half life 2 threw too much of them at you at once, which this game does as well, it's not because half life 2 had it that you should make the same mistake of setting multiple high DPS rocket sponges, there's a reason why you fought no more than 1 strider at a time in episode 1.
Overall this game feels like a concept test with a bad ending slapped onto it, but that doesn't mean that the game is bad, this is a review, of course I will be kind of nit-picky when it comes to it. I'd say give it a shot but don't keep your expectations too high, that way you'll have the most fun out of it.

A short, but well made Half Life 2 mod.
=Story=
Given the one hour length of the game, there isn't a whole lot of story implemented into it, you are, once again, Gordon Freeman fighting the Combine and once you defeat them, Gman comes to interrupt.
=Level Design=
Almost amounting to a full Half Life chapter, the game takes you through some zombie infested tunnels, the outer area of the tunnels where you still face off against zombies and then a more urban setting where you fight the Combine. Each area is greatly detailed and does not feel like it steps away from the Half Life universe at any moment. The environment is more destructible and it leads to some chaotic battles.
=Gameplay=
The game comes up with a new version of the Gravity Gun, one that's more damaging, later in the level, you face off against some zombies that are charging you and you have a whole playground to work with, from explosives to collapsing structures and from concrete blocks to metal parts, you are sure to enjoy this one. And right after that, you face off against the Combine in an urban construction site where you can use the crates from the cranes to kill them, but they also don't mind greatly destroying the buildings there leaving holes in the walls. Another great feature is earlier in the game, where you must use the element of darkness to pass zombies and turrets. You barely even need to use genuine weapons.
=Conclusion=
The biggest con to this is the short length, it leads up to the great Combine faceoff which ends chaotically with three striders, cranes and buildings that crumble in real time and then you get sucked out of the game by Gman and that's it... Disappointing, but at least it's fun. Regardless, great mod. 9/10 for me.
