Über das Spiel

UnReal World is a unique combination of roguelike roleplaying game and survival simulation set in the Far North long, long ago. Throughout the years, UnReal World has been praised for its depth, realism, atmosphere and immersion. The game is completely open-ended and you decide whether you wish to lead a life of a fisherman, a hermit searching for the peace, a brave adventurer, a rough hunter, a trapper or a tradesman.

As a member of one of the nine different cultures you'll enter a detailed and enchanting iron-age game world in which northern folklore, knowledge and way of life play an important part. The world and mechanics of the game are highly realistic, rich with historical atmosphere and emphasized on survival in the harsh ancient wilderness.

A wide world with vast forests, mires and mountains to roam and watercourses to row is randomly and procedurally generated - and you can live off the land and explore it on very detailed level. Track animals, set traps, hunt with bows and spears, tan hides, go fishing, pick berries, cook food, sleep in a temporary shelter or build a log cottage, trade with the villagers, craft items, interact with cultures near and far -- and so much more.

A few of the key features:
  • turn-based and open-ended - think before you act and live off the land as you please
  • random world generation for endless replayability
  • intricate procedural world full of wonders both mundane and extraordinary to explore on very detailed level
  • no character classes but nine different cultures to choose from
  • skill based system including multitude of skills from cookery to hideworking, from herblore to tracking
  • detailed terrain generation with diverse and accurate northern vegetable kingdom
  • convincing northern animal kingdom with species specific behaviour patterns and feeding relationships modelled in detail
  • keep in touch with the spirit world and the supernatural guardians of nature
  • find excitement in surviving everyday life and the quest for success in the harsh ancient wilderness
  • detailed combat (and hunting) with many tactical options and galore of weapon, battle experience and combatant related factors resulting in vivid and rewarding struggles
  • no "hit points" but detailed generation of injuries such as bruises, fractures, tears and cuts to specific body locations
  • injuries rated to determine their effect to physical activity
  • craft items from weapons to traps, build constructions for temporary shelter to log cabins
  • moddable crafting, building and flora
  • and so much more. Everything is up to you...

UnReal World is the longest living roguelike game of all times. It was first released in 1992 and has been continuously maintained and developed ever since.
Over the years we’ve seen dozens and dozens of new UnReal World versions each of them being complete games of their own, and still there is no end in sight to working with updates and new versions. UnReal World Steam version out now is the third evolution of the game (3.*) and a great deal of updates, enhancements and new features to it will follow.

I don't know how people can say this game is 'xenophobic' for speaking against the russian invasion of ukraine, but the game is a fine survival rouge-like experience that doesn't deserve to be brought down because some people like it when russians plant mines in playgrounds.

This is one of those incredibly deep games hidden by deceptively simple graphics that don't make much difference to gameplay. It truly gives the feeling of tramping around a far northern forest trying to survive. One of my all time favorite games, whether in 2000 or 2020. If you like immersive exploration, building, and survival mechanics, I recommend you buy it immediately without a moment's hesitation.

My only complaints would be a few minor things, such as, why can't you put out a fire you've lit? Or, why are people always so hostile to you in foreign villages, even when you are freezing or starving to death and it is clear you'll die if they throw you out? In real world tribal cultures, that doesn't happen so much. Generally people will let you share their fire if you wander in from the cold. Here, not only will they they not offer food or drink to the starving, but they won't let you borrow their fire to cook a steak you might be willing to share. Strange, indeed.

In general, I would love to see some of these minor mechanical things changed in future updates.

This game is an experience, its so deep I can't sum it up in just a review. If you even like roguelikes or survival games even a little bit, this is a must have. Its a different story every time you play and doesn't rely solely on combat to keep you coming back for more, you either live harmoniously with nature or nature kills you in the most brutal way possible. Beware the wolves in the forest.

TL;DR The most freaking awesome survival game I have ever played. Rough around the edges, but the atmosphere and mechanics are miles deeper than the next best survival games offered by Indie and AAA alike.

This game makes you feel the harshness of the open wilderness like no other game I have played. Nothing is ever just handed to you (barring the tutorial sequences). When you start, you need every tool at your disposal just to get by. Even when you find a rhythm and secure a steady supply of food, a poorly planned hunting trip could leave you stranded, wounded, and alone. And when you die, you die. No respawns here.

The in depth survival mechanics are the best part of the game. This is a game that rewards preparation and planning. Setting traps to secure you a steady supply of game, drying or smoking meat to last you through those times when luck isn't on your side, and exploring to find new hunting grounds. Furs from your catches can be traded for seeds to get a farm going. Or a shiny new spear for bear hunting. The game takes place in a time before widespread use of currency, so no trading for gold. I can scarcely express in words how much that changes how the game plays. You no longer need to hobble to the nearest village with a 150lbs of rabbit bones to sell for the universal gold coins that are so ubiquitous everywhere else. Utility comes first here; you carry what you need and nothing more.

It's also refreshing to see a survival game where the creators put the time and effort into actually reflecting real life forest living. Sami's deep connection to the forests of rural Finland really shows. This sets it apart from literally every other survival game I have played to date. I'm not a big expert on hunting, but I'm fairly sure a deer doesn't dissolve into leather and meat chops when it dies (looking at you Valheim). Even the few games where you do have to to butcher your kill, your skill, quality of equipment, and the time it takes to skin and butcher the animal rarely come into play. I can assure you that they very much do come into play in Unreal World. It's a nice touch that helps immerse you more than any amount of graphics ever could.

Of course, there is also the setting. We live in a rough equivalent to iron age Finland. Some settlements exist, but they are far and few between. Many are just camps for hunter gatherers like yourself. Iron is also the cutting edge of technology (literally, in most applications). It's also fairly rare, and not something you can craft yourself. With good reason, I'm sure. Early ironworking techniques are fiddly at the best of times; a fresh youth fighting tooth and nail to avoid starvation is unlikely to know all the ins and outs. I would understand perfectly if you installed an ironworking mod, though. Still, it forces us to re-evaluate the value we place on material possessions.

Also worth mentioning is the spell system. It's not really a magic system in the conventional sense; it's more a system of spiritual mysticism. Give offerings to the gods, thank the earth for letting you sleep on it, bait traps at sundown, etc. It quickly verges into quackery but being set in a fantasy world allows it to yield results. Most rituals impact luck-based outcomes, so it's sometimes hard to tell if you are getting tangible results. What it does do perfectly, however, is immerse you headlong into a deeply spiritual society. It is glorious.

With all the good stuff out of the way, it's time for the bad. The UI is clunky. A back button for the crafting and action menus is the first thing I can think of; having to re-open the crafting menu every time you select the wrong category is a bit annoying. Combat logs make it difficult to tell who is getting injured sometimes. Having different colored text for when you get hit would be of immense help. Being able to specify an exact starting location on a new game would also be nice. There are also a few thing that your character should absolutely be able to craft; boats and fishing nets being the prime example. Again, mods.

All in all, a wonderful survival immersion game that will draw you in once you can look past the UI. Of course, the UI and other gameplay issues may be addressed in future updates. The developers have been updating this game for so long he has an honest to goodness world record. I look forward to what he has in store for us next and all the hundreds of hours I will be forgetting to eat in real life.

In its original form this game was a tedious and frustrating grind for me. 20 hours in and I barely levelled any off the important skills. I was ready to give up and delete the game, when I decided to check the mods on the official forum. They fixed the game for me.

Past the old-school UI and the chunky graphics, there is something very visceral about this game. You get awoken in the early morning by the sound of a passing reindeer. If you're able to kill it, you can feed yourself for weeks. You think of your worn out clothes you can replace with its hide. You slowly wake up and sneak towards the deer. But, a twig snaps because you sneak skill is terrible. The deer flees. You follow. You loose an arrow from your bow.

miss.

You try again.

miss.

Once more.

Hit!

The beast is wounded, but still alive. It still may evade you. You follow the trail of blood it leaves behind. You finally corner it on a peninsula. Your stomach growls from hunger. You hit the deer with your spear. And again. And again. Eventually the reindeer collapses so you slit it's throat and let it bleed out.

This is just one story of living in the wild that is possible in this game.

Personally, this isn't for me. While I enjoy survival games, this one is a bit much for my tastes.

HOWEVER

The love and effort put into this game is simply staggering. This game is VERY hardcore survival, and has so much to it that I didn't even scratch the surface.

That alone is why I'm leaving a recommendation. Not for me, but most definitely for someone else.

Yes, a roguelike. Yes, a top down. And yes, DOS graphics.
But don't judge this book by it's cover. It is brutally hard, and it is extremely unforgiving. Think you'll be fine taking on that bear with a spear? Think again. How about surviving winter outdoors in your spawn clothes? Think again. That Njeprez warrior is surely easy to take down. Think again (unless you have a goodboy to help out).
As well as strangely addictive and fun to play. I first played this game back in the days of late version 1 and early version 2. Ever since then I've been back over and over and over again to play it. Thanks to its continuous development (yes, it has a record for the longest continuous support of a game!) there is usually some new mechanic to play with. You'll soon get used to the controls and the full use of the keyboard and all the shift+ and alt+ shortcuts, they are daunting at first but it comes naturally after a while.
Could literally not recommend more.

If you can get past the simple graphics and the fact that it's controlled by keyboard, this is THE BEST SURVIVAL GAME EVER EVER. I find myself coming back to this game for a couple hours or so every other month, and once a year I go on binge for a few weeks. Hardcore, unforgiving, realistic... and so satisfying when you get the hang of it. You've got to try this one.

A true classic that has been almost 30 years in the making. For fans of roguelike survival this is the crown jewel. An immersive storytelling engine through all kinds of funny situations in the wilderness. Warmly recommended, support the developer to help him get through the cold winter!

Note: I haven't played this so much through Steam as I've had the standalone version for 20 years now, so played hours here don't match the reality at all.

Great survival game, that really focus on the survival part of a survival game. Turn based, simple graphics, can be difficult to get into, and is the kind of game that some will enjoy and others not, but is a game I love. Happy to have bought it on steam (after playing off and on for years via the free demo) to support the continued development. Thanks for a great game!

I've put a lot more hours into this pre-Steam, and I bought it here to support the dev who has been updating this game for almost 30 years. This is one of the best survival games ever made, easily top 3. It is a must try for any survival game enthusiast. Don't let the graphics put you off. It is more detailed and immersive than any other survival game I've played. It is extremely challenging but also very satisfying once you've set yourself up for long term survival.

I only bought the game to support the devs.I played this back in the day when i was just a child. This game is pretty old, like very very old.Game was published in 90's but still getting updates and improvements to this day constantly, probably the first survival game ever released.

I really want to thank the developers for making me addicted to role-playing games and survival genre whatsoever.

I would highly recommend it if you're able to get past the learning curve of games like this, Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, and Dwarf Fortress, for me I think the challenge of learning the game and getting good at it is one of the most fun parts about games like this, the sense of progress (like lets say you just finished building your house) is very rewarding, I believe you can play a much older version of the game on their website for free, so if you're not sure try that, but for 10.99 on steam or 8.50 on their website, it's a great purchase.

Calm, immersive and ultimately boring survival sandbox, which suffers the usual fate of survival sandboxes. A massive amount of development time went into the complex survival-related mechanics, their sandbox parameters, related worldgen stuff and so forth. As a result, the depth of UnReal World is impressive, but it is all in survival. Once your character has mastered its environment and went into Njerpez village to stave off boredom and die in the process, there is nothing else to do. Kinda reminds me of Project Zomboid.

So this is your gameplay after you get the hang of things: a set of simple repetetive actions performed with absolutely awful controls. Which is a definition of unfun, and that is coming from the guy who enjoys ADoM and DF. Well, the store page says on the tin that UrW is basically 'Ancient Finland simulator: the game', so I do not know what I expected.

The graphics are pretty much from the 90s, as is the interface, which can be quite off-putting. But if you can look past that, you'll find a game with very unique charm. Yes, you will probably die quite often before you figure out how the game works (and even after that, bad luck can still do you in), but the game is not actually intentionally hostile to you unlike most other roguelikes - your dangers come mostly from nature and its realistic events, not from monsters, roving bands of cannibals or what have you, and you will not die from random events that you couldn't foresee or prepare for (well, mostly, anyway). I've only clocked in some 60 hours on Steam, but have played the game on and off over the past couple of decades, and will probably continue to do so.

The graphics are off-putting and extremely dated. The controls and mechanics are confusing, difficult, and time consuming to learn. You will die many, many times, and it will be both heart-breaking and infuriating. And I am still terrible at this game, so I have experienced that quite a few times.

However, I absolutely love Unreal World, and it's shaping up to be one of my favorite games of all time.

I took a chance on it because of what I had heard about the dedication of the devs, the accuracy of its survival gameplay, its roots in real research and historical practices, and the fact that it is not expensive. I think you should take a chance on it too, and I'll go over some of what keeps me coming back to Unreal World even when I inevitably ragequit it again because a character I liked got killed.

The factors I listed in the beginning of this review are those that keep most people from playing the game (In my experience of trying to get all of my friends to play it, anyway.) I was concerned about these too, but I think most of them actually contribute to how enjoyable and rewarding it is to play.

I normally hate basically every element of what makes a roguelike a roguelike, ESPECIALLY permadeath with no rewards or advancement, but the game doesn't need artificial progress: the deep systems and simulation elements mean that you as the player advance in skill and knowledge every time you play. The game doesn't need to unlock skills and systems for you because you do it yourself. (And in a more engaging and meaningful way (for me anyway) than memorizing attack patterns or boss battle mechanics.)

Other roguelikes often tout this kind of player-based progression as why they are fun, but basically none of them click for me in this way but Unreal World. Most of these games come across as tedious and forced to me, partially because of how repetitive the gameplay loop gets but mostly because they stop being engaging and start being annoying when you fail. Every game of Unreal World is a story of its own that you write yourself, not a grind towards a set goal.

I have begun to repeat myself so I will just say that Unreal World has a lot of heart and a lot to do and learn. I think you should take a chance on it.

Wish you could craft iron stuff, or even just something like a fishing rod. Hey I'm a master craftsman, so why can't I make a punt, who else is going to do it? Random villager craftsman no 42 just spawns it in.

Trade is really rough, you get completely ripped off a lot of the time. Yet it's required because you can't craft a lot of the stuff you should be able to.

It feels like the game is unfinished, definitely wouldn't get it unless it's on sale.

I do like this game anyway though, I have a lot of fun with it. This is just rather frustrating though.

That said, the ghastly cosplay photos are just really offputting and I find they really detract from the experience. It's not that they are bad photos, and the guys in them aren't ugly, it's just that the mixture of pixel art and live photos is deeply jarring to me somehow.

Okay so i have probably around 2000 hours maybe more, i played long long long before steam ever had anything to do with it and the developer was rather mysterious to most of us hed kinda dip in and out and we would always be wondering if he decided to leave it behind but it was always his return project and he didnt ask for pay but donations if you could. I was so happy when i returned from my 6 year hiatus from pc gaming to see it alive and strong and even on steam. i probably wont play it much on steam cause i find it hard to grasp gaming much anymore at the level i used to but this game lives on in my memories as one of the best games ive ever played. even back when it was bare bones and we had to report even the most minute of bugs and such to the forums and we knew by the time we came back round to the game it would likely have been fixed. its rare to find a game that continues development for decades and its so fun to look through all the updates. and see the stuff added. as small as it may seem to most these updates mean a lot to us who have long played the game.... i could describe it similar to knowing someone and seeing them go from infant to adult. Not knowing what to expect hoping for the best and checking in every now and then to see where its at.

all love to this game and developer. hope a new generation can enjoy this like we did back then

Been playing this on and off for the last 2 years free from the UnReal World's website. More than happy to support the dev by buying it on Steam.

This is truly a work of passion thats been going for 25+ years and just keeps getting better and better. Its brutal, it doesn't hold your hand and there's a lot to learn but feels very rewarding when you eventually figure things out.

This game proves that you don't need fancy visuals and gimmicks to be an addictive and fun survival game. Even the tanky controls bring an element of nostalgia and charm.

Its not going to be for everyone, in fact, its only going to appeal to a certain audience. If you're a fan of old ASCII games like Rogue or NetHack and have somehow never heard of UnReal World before, you're going to love this game! Or if you're into newer ASCII games like Caves of Qud or Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead, then you'll also enjoy this game.

Become one with Finnish nature as you violently murder every living thing you see. Spend weeks looking for a pair of socks but never find any, and lose your toes to frostbite come winter. Shoot an arrow and miss, and send it into orbit of the sun.
Trade your hard-earned furs for a masterwork tool and get waylaid by robbers on the way back. Keep strange mushrooms in your pocket to look at from time to time. But then accidentally eat one and die. Try to climb a tree until your whole body becomes one singular contusion. Forget where you saw the unforgettable grass. Finally finish your cabin, and start a new character. Trip balls. Bash a duck seventeen times in the skull with your club before it dies. Emerge from the tree line carrying 200 torches in your arms, to the amazement of all the Drikk children.

A great survival game with solid mechanics. The only thing that would make it even better would be more things to do. Sock-crafting, for example.

Awesome game.

I love survival games with The Long Dark being my favorite. The Unreal World is kinda like the Long Dark but on steroids with minimal graphics. If you're reading this comment and are hesitant to buy this game due to its dated graphics remember that books have Zero graphics and everyone seems to enjoy them immensely.
Unreal World is like a book that you write yourself.

You'll start to deeply care about the animals that you get, possibly naming them after your own pets. You'll forge your own story, braving the elements, fighting the enemies, exploring the world. You'll get the adrenaline rush when you misjudge your strength and get killed by an angry foe or simiply step into your own trap and die of wounds. You will grieve, yet you will immediately start making new plans for your next playthrough.

I love that this game gives you so much freedom. Whether you want to become a mad cannibal who leads a pack of feral dogs or a lone trapper/fisherman — Anything is possible.

A work of love, but so primitive and hard to get into. Plays like a game from 40 years ago - it was originally made 20 years ago, but the interface is terrible - tiny graphics, unintuitive controls - would appeal to Linux command line afficionados! I actually like older games with simple interfaces, but this is a step too far.

This is an amazing hardcore/survival/traditional roguelike. For cons there are definitely some janky bits, and the music and graphics are fairly poor even for a tileset-based roguelike. Also I feel the game would benefit greatly from allowing more complex interactions with NPCs (marriage, children, forming a tribe, founding a village or joining an existing one). Pretty much every problem I had with the game is addressed in the developers roadmap so with a little patience I believe this great game could one day be a masterpiece. Simply one of the best roguelikes on steam, and despite it's flaws, URW will reward learning it's complex systems with many hours of fun and challenging gameplay.

I love this game so much I bought it twice. I originally bought it directly back in 2004, and then bought it on Steam when it showed up here as well.

I have not found any other game that lives up to URW, which is why I've kept going back to it for sixteen years now. Every game play is unique and makes for fun stories. Also immense props to the developer, who keeps upgrading and enriching the game to keep pulling us back in.

I think I can describe why I love this game with a story:
When I first started playing Unreal World seemed like a really daunting game. I do enjoy overly complex, simple graphics games such as Dwarf Fortress, but when I picked up Unreal World I think I was burned out. That said, eventually I started a game where I spawned on an island surrounded on all sides by rivers, with a character who could not swim. Eventually I found that there was a wild pig living on that same island - I spent days tracking it down and subsequently chasing after it until I was finally able to stab it to death with my knife.
Finally, with fresh meat and a hide, I began to formulate a plan of tanning the skin, creating rope to make a raft with, and then getting the hell off the island. It took days, my meat spoiled and it was my only source of food. For days while I worked on the hide I was forced to eat rotten meat in the morning, vomit in the afternoon, and then pass out in the evening.
Finally, after finding the logs for the raft (due to not having an axe) I was able to slap together a raft. I travelled down river for about half a day and found civilization, traded the rest of the hide for much needed food, and stayed in the village until I was longer dying of malnutrition.
I ended up continuing to play with that character, built a log cabin, and actually survived the winter! I feel like this was the trial by fire I needed to fully understand the game.
Unreal World is at its least fun when you are doing well (well stocked cellar, your own settlement), but getting there is amazing because there's so much working against you. If you try to optimize your play, or murder anyone you meet in the wild for easy items, you may be doing yourself a disservice. This is the most fun I've ever had freezing to death!

Over the last decade, I have played this game every few years. I recently finished my first playthrough on Steam after 185 hours. The game is a survival genre masterpiece in my opinion. If you are are not too fussed about user friendly UIs, steep learning curves or gorgeous 3d graphics, you will love this game if you have played and enjoyed any of the following: Cataclysm DDA, The Long Dark, Green Hell, Neo Scavenger, Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode, 7 Days to Die, or pretty much any deep survival-focused sim/roguelike

I have probably 500 hours or so put into this game, and was glad to finally see it on Steam - I figure now I can give it a proper review.

This game is deep, slow, immersive, and practical. You really need to play around with it a bit in the beginning to figure out how the commands work and how not to die in the first 5 days. The graphics are obviously not going to be great, but the game doesn't rely on them to be good, and if you're open to them, you learn to love them; they fit with the slow pace the game runs on. The sounds are similar, not too extravagant but fit the premise of the game - solitary and immersive.

The game relies on you to make your own story and play the way you want. You can be a solitary fisherman on the edge of a river, scraping by, maybe getting enough to smoke/dry for long term storage and trade. You can be a hunter, searching for small or large game to try and take down. You can be a trapper, building trap fences in vital parts of the woods to try and nab a large buck... or a combination of all the above. (There is even an unwritten challenge to play vegetarian if you think you can.)

The game also has a rather deep, though potentially silly combat mechanism, with unwritten weapon weights, speeds, damages, skills, and forces of impact programmed in. What this means is that a weapon such as a javelin will be able to be thrown more accurately than a sword, a mace will be able to cause more damage per square inch than a larger weapon, etc. This combined with armor ratings for various damages (blunt, point, edge, tear) causes you to be selective with which weapon you use against your enemy... However, death is permanent so choose your battles wisely. The potential silliness I mention though is that sometimes you just cant deliver a killing blow and you end up shooting your enemy 10 times with arrows, which makes them seem like a pin cushion by the end of it, and don't ever take them lightly no matter how wounded... I once had a woman downed and bleeding and when I turned my back to kill her son she sliced me in half.

When you've made it through a winter, have a nice cabin, plenty of dried food, and maybe a hunting companion or two (woof woof), I'd suggest making a raid on the Njerpez (enemy) towns to the south east. They can put up a hell of a challenge, but it's incredibly fun and rewarding to see small group combat as opposed to solo, and their loot can be great.

I love this game. I love the updates still going on all this time (27+ years), I love people creating stories with their characters and really feeling the immersion, I love the simple but vast amount of choices you can make, and I'm so happy to recommend this game to others.

I gave this game a try in 2020.
It took me one hour to die and get completely frustrated by it's complexity. I also ordered a refund.

A few hours later I decided to give it a second chance and I don't regret it.
Similar to dwarf fortress it's hard to start out, especially if english is not your native tongue (I had to look up some words).
Unreal world has two nice guided gameplays I missed in my first playthrough.

Another plus: It's freaking hot where I live right now. This game runs smooth on max energy safing/underclock options on my pc (less heat generated, lol)

This is the game I keep coming back to. How can a survival game be both cosy and brutal?

Sometimes you're happy in a warm cabin sharpening staves to make javelins.

Other times, you're drowning in icy water, pulling yourself from the current at the last moment and hastily making a fire to survive the exposure.

This is a masterpiece game made with passion and insight.

This is a very special game. Everything has been said about the UI being outdated, incorrigible, and daunting. A great deal of criticism has been levied against the apparent simplicity of the mechanics on the surface. Instead of losing time echoing what now have become criticisms of the unimaginative and the hardly original, let me try to say succinctly what made me come to love this gem of a game. It all comes down to how successfully the developers have communicated the ethos of a way of life that today has become largely forgotten, abandoned, and persecuted. Our ancestors, and, indeed, yet many indigenous communities today embrace the difficulties of living closer to nature. Indeed, it is in their love of the soil and dirt, life and death that they see hardhip as the logical consequence, if not the inevitable, yet pedagogical corollary to the real experience of the world stripped of the hypocrisies of modern society. And indeed, the game's storied development, as well as the tone of the game itself, do marginally reflect, whether purposefully or not, this patient, slow, and difficult process of really getting to know something. In the end, the best things in life can only be attained thusly. Great art always speaks clearly and communicates through sincerity. It is why we do not mistake the styles of Stravinksy, or Baudelaire, or Dante. And, to me, at least, Unreal World, in its expression, is lovingly sincere and truly unmistakable.

Made by a saami madman living in seclusion and developing a finland simulator for over 30 years this game is worth every penny. Though you can get it for free the passion, craftsmanship and attention to detail the guy has put into this is truly worth your 10 bucks and also helps him to develop his lovechild even further. If you like Games like Dwarf Fortress, DDA:Cataclysm or Uuno Turhapuro Muuttaa Maalle then this is just a must have.

The parts I like:

The world is alive, with simulated people and animals living and traveling throughout an iron-age land. In my opinion, no other game gives me a thrill quite like tracking and endurance hunting an elk in Unreal World. One of the best survival games I've played and by far my favorite when it comes to hunting. This goes without mentioning the incredibly vast world, the numerous tribes and cultures, crafting/trading/agriculture, doing quests, hunting down Njerpez raiders, the combat depth, etc.

The parts I dislike:

People consider the main challenge of the game to be surviving your first winter. I agree, because usually by this point you'll have a created a comfy cabin, gathered high-quality tools, fought with bears/wolves/Njerpez, and so on. In this sense, your gameplay by the end of your first winter will probably be no different than by your second or third. I suppose you could travel across the vast world, meet the other tribes, attack Njerpez villages, etc, but there's no pressing reason why you *should* do these things. I know they intend to add late-game content such as player families, so hopefully, that will extend the enjoyment of playthroughs.

The controls are also unwieldy and cannot be changed. I understand that it's an old game and the controls are possibly hardcoded, but still. If at any moment I feel the desire to play Unreal World and choose not to, it's because I don't want to bother with the controls. Just about every time I recommend the game to people, they're also dissuaded by the controls. AutoHotKey is useful for changing some keys, but it's merely a bandaid on the issue.

Remember that feeling you got as a kid when you would walk through the woods, imagining all of the possibilities? Dreams of building a tree house, or picking up a stick and pretending it was a sword? UnReal World will provide that feeling to you in spades. Behind the oldschool graphics lies a game that you can quite literally play for the rest of your life and not get bored with, this is a true roguelike, but one with a setting that no other can match in my opinion.

If you want a true sense of adventure, play this game. If you want a game that has stood the test of time, and will continue to do the same, play this game. If you want a game where you can live a completely different life, especially if you have any interest in the outdoors at all, play this game. If you want to get truly lost in another world, and be completely immersed, put on your headphones, and play this game.

UnReal World is the type of game that is an investment. For the measly cost, you are getting a game that has been updated for something like 25 years, and according to the developers, will basically be continued to be updated forever, similar to something like dwarf fortress. This is a true passion project.

Are you ready to enter an UnReal World?

So this one winter day, I go to check my traps. I am pretty bad at traps, so no animal ever falls for my contraptions, even if I bait them with tasty meat, nor do I need them, really, since I am a pretty expert hunter, but I still check them every now and then. Anyway, here I am, going along my fence with pits dug at regular intervals, overlooking an open mire to the east and bordering a dense forest to the west. It has not snowed for several days, and the snow in the open mire is a gigantic open book for me. For an experienced tracker like me, the snow might as well be speaking: I see the full history of who has been here when, and where they went in the last few days. Here I can clearly see a reindeer checking out my traps a few days ago, and obviously concluding that (s)he does not want to step onto the unconvincingly covered pit; and here... what is this? Human tracks! Just a few minutes old!

I follow the human tracks and discover a Njerpez warrior. These are total scum, in case you don't know. I start sneaking ahead. I am decent at hiding, nothing that would ever fool a deer or an elk; they would have already smelled or heard me by now. But this fool is completely absorbed in hunting a squirrel. Yes, that's right: he is wielding a shortbow and chasing a squirrel, oblivious to my presence. Now, I am an archer myself, I know a thing or two about bows. His shortbow is not a great weapon. Actually, it is what I started out with, and I know that hunting is not fun with that piece of equipment. Myself, I have a masterwork hunting bow in one hand and a fine broadhead arrow in the other. I sneak up to him within a few dozen paces, fire, and... my arrow pierces his neck. He falls dead instantly, not knowing what hit him. That was a successful trap checking run! And I am glad I left my dog at home this time, he might have made this particular hunt more complicated and rather more bloody. Make no mistake: the outcome would have been the same. I used to be afraid of these guys, but these days I do not tolerate Njerpez scum on my hunting grounds.

This is Unreal World for you. It is an incredibly deep simulation, and very satisfying. Highly recommended!

Great game. I love the lighting and the way that the visibility changes in the rain and in the dark. I love the way the animal AI works. A very engaging and fun take on the open world survival genre. If you take the time to learn the controls and learn what it takes to survive, you'll sink a handful of hours into this game. Like all games like this though, there is an RNG element that wont screw you over *that* hard usually, but can still make a considerable impact.

(For some unknown reason I don't see my review on here. I'm certain there was one?
Not going to type a long thing if it keeps disappearing)
Short version:

Graphics:
Don't be put off by things like 2d like graphics (which is actually excellent) - its not a 3d world but a rogue-like top-down procedural generated open world where your character lives with no specific goals (although that can be enabled via f5key) trying to survive by hunting for food or placing traps to catch animals, which one then naturally would want to cook at a fire which you also have to make with twigs and wood cut from trees with tools which you have crafted. Think of those survivor tv series's with the added danger addition of interacting with and trading with villages and npcs, and you do get hostile ones trying to kill you.

Interface:
https://www.unrealworld.fi/wiki/index.php?title=Keyboard_commands
Its no different from other keyboard based games like the x2/x3 space game series which also use keyboard shortcuts if you take in consideration when game was developed, though a mouse interface would certainly make things more appealing to newer generation players.

Gameplay:
One adventure you will find tough and die early, in others you have an easy or sometimes too easy life. it all depends on start location, factions around, season, etc.
Game-play experience is random and not everyone will experience the same introduction to the game and therefore I can't tell you how your adventure will turn out - whether you will love or hate it from the start. Its a rogue-like, if its too tough/easy, start over and try something else.
If you start around a lot of friendly villages, you can trade for most things you need. Starting in nowhere forces you to make/craft the things you need: tools, clothing etc. Starting in hostile territory forces you to focus on defense making walls/fences/traps/weapons..
maybe just check this review video: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1875390490

I don't often play the latest version on steam, my hours would be low. The prior versions not on steam had less bug-fixes and thus more exploits :) Most of the die-hard fans here played long before this was on steam from the developer website where there were often free demo's available so their worlds lie in a older version. If unsure, try the demo a couple of times due to the randomness as explained.

I get bored of games really quickly, and yet I keep always coming back to three: Dwarf Fortress, Cataclysm:DDA, and Unreal World.
It's open, it's complex, it's unforgiving, and it's brilliant. If you're into that kind of game, you don't need to know anything else - Get it!

This game is perfect for those who enjoy games like Dwarf Fortress. You establish a settlement, train skills, and travel far and wide to find improved tools and trade. You can name your dogs! The wound/injury system is just like Dwarf Fortress. If a lynx claws your shoulder, you can only use one hand, which can make chopping firewood impossible or difficult. It is very realistic.
